Taking Pets to Barbados

About barbados.

Barbados is an island in the West Indies, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and only 21 miles long. With beautiful weather, stunning tropical surroundings, and an array of outdoor activities there’s plenty to do on this small island. With English as the main language and their laws being largely based on UK law, it wouldn’t be a difficult move to make. We are here to help you fly your pets to Barbados for your new life.

Barbados Pet Import

Barbados doesn’t require a quarantine period on arrival. But there are a few things you’ll need to enter the country with a pet. First your pet must have a microchip and it must have a rabies vaccine. After the rabies vaccine you need to wait at least 35 days before travelling to the country. Along with the vaccine, you need to have your pet tested for heartworm, leishmaniasis and other viruses that may be present in your origin country. Dogs must be treated for tapeworms and ticks with 7 days of your departure. Once this is all completed, you need an export health certificate from a government approved vet. The Petair UK veterinary team can help complete this to make things super easy for you.

Pets travelling to Barbados need an import permit as well. You need to be locally based to get this, so having someone on Barbados who can help is really useful. The permit must be obtained from: Veterinary Service Department, Ministry of Agriculture, The Pine, St Michael, Barbados – Tel; 001 246 427 5073/Fax; 001 246 429 2143

Upon arrival in Barbados with your pet, you will be issued a landing certificate at a cost of $60 per animal. You need to work with a customs broker to ensure there are no delays in importing your pet. Petair UK can recommend a customs broker if you don’t have one. Once you have all the required certificates, your pet will be transported to the animal reception centre. This is because all pets entering the country need to be inspected by a local vet. There are charges for this service if you need them outside of regular working hours, so keep this in mind when planning your travel.

If you are looking into Barbados pet travel, then contact us today. We have flown over 12,000 pets worldwide and have over 12 years’ experience in completing the required paperwork to ensure your journey goes smoothly.

Pet Travel Update: Barbados Relaxes Its Pet Import Rules

Pet transport to barbados.

The pet import requirements for Barbados have been relatively strict in the past, but as of January 1, 2015, pets from all countries can now be imported directly into the country without quarantine provided that all import requirements are met.

Import requirements vary depending on the country of origin, but certain standards apply to all pets. All dogs and cats will need to have an ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to standard 11785 microchip and must be vaccinated with rabies after the microchip has been implanted.

An Import Permit is also required; this is obtained from the Barbados Ministry of Agriculture and applications are available here . Dogs and cats also need an Export Permit endorsed by the Official Veterinary Services from their country of origin.

Per the Barbados Ministry of Agriculture, pets coming from rabies-free or low-rabies countries (these 'Category 1' countries include the United States, EU countries and Australia, for example) must meet the following requirements:

1. The pets must be microchipped; 2. The pets must be vaccinated against rabies after the microchip has been implanted; 3. Thirty-five (35) days must pass after the rabies vaccination before the pets are eligible to enter Barbados; 4. Within seven (7) days of travel, dogs must be treated against ticks and tapeworms; 5. For countries where the following diseases are endemic, the pets must be tested for heartworm, leishmaniasis, nipah virus and/or hendra virus and found to be negative; 6. Within seven (7) days of travel, the pets must undergo a veterinary examination and be issued with an Official Veterinary Export Health Certificate.

For pets coming from 'Category 2' countries (all those not considered low-rabies or rabies-free), these are the health requirements:

1. The pets must be microchipped; 2. The pets must be vaccinated against rabies after the microchip has been implanted; 3. Thirty (30) days after rabies vaccination, the pets must have a blood test (FAVN rabies antibody titre test) carried out by an approved laboratory, with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml 4. Ninety (90) days must pass after the successful blood sample was taken before the pets are eligible to enter Barbados 5. Within seven (7) days of travel, dogs must be treated against ticks and tapeworms; 6. For countries where the following diseases are endemic, the pets must be tested for heartworm, leishmaniasis, nipah virus and/or hendra virus and found negative; 7. Within seven (7) days of travel, the pets must undergo a veterinary examination and be issued with an Official Veterinary Export Health Certificate.

All pets traveling via commercial airline must arrive in Barbados via cargo and clear customs upon arrival with the help of a customs broker. Arriving without proper notice or outside of regular business hours may incur extra fees or delays. For a full overview of the requirements as well as a list of Category 1 and Category 2 countries, please refer to the Barbados Ministry of Agriculture website .

As you can see, though the Barbados import process is now more inclusive, it still requires several careful steps and precise attention to detail. Feel free to contact PetRelocation if you have questions and would like more information about enlisting door-to-door assistance with your move.

The following guidelines must be followed when importing any animal into Barbados:

An import permit must be obtained from the Chief Veterinary Officer before the importation of all animals, reptiles and birds.

A Veterinary Officer must examine the animal before it is allowed to leave the customs area.

Dogs and cats must be free of any communicable disease. These animals may be imported by permit directly from the UK, Ireland, Jamaica, St.Kitts - Nevis, Antigua, St.Lucia and St.Vincent. Cats and dogs originating from all other countries must undergo 6 months quarantine in Britain after which time an import permit can be secured.

For further inquiries, contact Veterinary Services at Tel: (246) 427-5073 or Fax: (246) 420-8444.

Barbados Pet Import/Export Requirements

Barbados pet import/export requirements are as follows: Dogs and cats may enter Barbados from any country in the world provided they meet the import requirements. Pet owners must first obtain an import permit, along with a health certificate issued by the animal’s country of origin. The import permit must be obtained from the Veterinary Services Department, located at the Pine, St. Michael. Once completed and approved, the permit is valid for six months from the date of issue. The export health certificate is referred to as an Official Export Health Certificate 1, which is a document signed and stamped by the Official Veterinary Services of the country of origin, and must be completed in English. The import health requirements will differ depending on the category of country. Barbados divides countries into one of two categories based on their rabies risk. Category 1: Countries and territories that are rabies free or those that present a low risk with respect to rabies, including the United States, Canada, and European Union Member Countries. Category 2: All other countries and territories. Animals traveling by sea (e.g. on yachts, cruise ships and cargo vessels) also fall into this category Regardless of origin, all dogs and cats entering Barbados must be permanently identified with a microchip and vaccinated against rabies after the microchip has been implanted. Airlines may have separate and additional requirements. Check with your airline to determine what requirements they may have, if any. More information on Barbados pet import/export requirements

Travel Requirements Based on Pet Type

Barbados divides countries into one of two categories based on their rabies risk .

  • Category 1: Countries and territories that are rabies free or those that present a low risk with respect to rabies-  this includes the United States
  • Category 2: All other countries and territories.  Animals travelling by sea (e.g. on yachts, cruise ships and cargo vessels) also fall into this category

NOTICE:  Failure to satisfy all of the health conditions laid out in the health requirements will result in your pet being refused entry into Barbados

All dogs and cats entering Barbados must be permanently identified with a microchip (ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to standard 11785) and must be vaccinated against rabies after microchip implantation. Only ISO standard microchips should be used. The identification number stated in the certificate should be identical to that which can be found on the animal. All supporting certificates (rabies vaccination, laboratory test results) should bear the microchip number. The certifying veterinarian must be able to verify the microchip number before signing the certificate.

An Import Permit must first be obtained from the Veterinary Services Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management, Barbados . Permits are valid for six (6) months from the date of issue. Application forms are available from the Veterinary Services office or can be downloaded from the Ministry of Agriculture’s website.

The animal must be implanted with a microchip before or at the time of vaccination against rabies. Only inactivated virus vaccines manufactured in compliance with the recommendations of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Manual should be used. The validity of the vaccine is according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

The vaccination should have been carried out when the animal was at least three (3) months old. In the case of a booster vaccination, the booster must have been administered on or before the date of expiry of the previous vaccine.

There is a wait of thirty-five (35) days from the date of administration of a primary rabies vaccination or revaccination of an expired or missed rabies booster vaccination before your dog or cat is eligible to enter Barbados. If the vaccine manufacturer’s data sheet requires more than one vaccination to complete the primary course of vaccinations, the 35 day wait applies from the date of the final vaccination of that course. The day of vaccination counts as day 0.

Heartworm Disease Test   Dog over 6 months old must be tested for heartworm disease within the 30 days prior to leaving the U.S. (Cats do not require a heartworm test):

  • ELISA antigen tests such as the IDEXX® SNAP® test kit may be used. If the ELISA test is positive or if the animal was previously treated for heartworm, then the modified Knott’s test may be carried out to demonstrate the absence of microfilaraemia.

Parasite Treatment Dogs must be treated for ticks and tapeworms within the 7 days prior to leaving the U.S. The tapeworm treatment must contain praziquantel.  Cats do not require parasite treatment.

  • View a list of approved laboratories

All dogs and cats entering Barbados must be accompanied by an Official Export Health Certificate endorsed (signed and stamped) by the Official Veterinary Services of the country of origin. Within seven (7) days of travel, the pets must undergo a veterinary examination and be issued with an Official Veterinary Export Health Certificate.

The Official Health Certificate must be endorsed (signed and stamped) by an Official Government/Federal Veterinarian . This may not be the same veterinarian who carries out the procedures and/or fills out the health certificate. The Official Veterinarian should see the import permit before issuing the Export Health Certificate.

The export health certificate is valid for a period of 10 days from the date of endorsement by the Official Veterinarian. In the case of animals travelling by sea, validity can be extended for the period of the voyage

Residency : Cats and dogs from Category 1 countries must demonstrate that they have spent at least three (3) months continuously either in the country of export or in other Category 1 countries immediately prior to entry. This three (3) month period may be partly in the country of export and partly in another Category 1 country. If the latter is the case, the certifying veterinarian must be able to verify this prior to signing the certificate. All animals that do not fall into Category 1, including pets that have not been in a Category 1 country for more than 3 months and animals arriving by sea must satisfy the conditions for Category 2

International Health Certificate (362.67 KB)

You must give at least three (3) working days’ notice of the expected date and time of arrival of the animal. Failure to do so will result in significant delays in receiving your pet once it arrives.

Contact Veterinary Services at (246) 427-5492; (246)427-5073; Fax: (246) 429-2143; email: [email protected] . Please provide the following information:

  • Name, address (in Barbados) and contact information of the owner/agent;
  • Name and contact information of the Customs broker;
  • Date and time of arrival;
  • Airline and Flight number or vessel name
  • All pets must clear customs and veterinary checks upon arrival. You will need to employ the services of a customs broker to facilitate customs clearance.
  • The Airlines must issue a “Pre-Alert” notifying the relevant parties in Barbados of the pets on board the aircraft. [Animal (Diseases and Importation Control) Regulations CAP. 253, Section 5].
  • Upon arrival, the animals are taken from the aircraft directly to the Animal Reception Centre for veterinary checks and customs clearance. Pets accompanying passengers in the aircraft cabin must be handed over to the aircraft handling agents upon disembarkation.
  • Once approval has been given for the pet to enter the country, a Customs Officer will apply the relevant duties (as all live animals entering Barbados are recognised as cargo) and the pets can be collected by their owner..

Fees :  In addition to custom duties, Barbados legislation allows for the collection of various fees on the importation of dogs and cats.  Animals landed in Barbados outside of Government working hours, 8:15 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday.  Weekends and Bank Holidays are subject to overtime inspection fees.

For pet travel requirements not listed, APHIS has not been officially informed by the foreign country about the requirements for your pet’s travel. We recommend that you contact a government official of the country you are traveling to for more information.

Monkeys in Barbados

Where can I see Green Monkeys while in Barbados?

• Wild Monkeys can be seen all over the island, often where fruit trees grow in abundance.

• Barbados Wildlife Reserve has a troop of monkeys. Best time to interact with them is during feeding around 2pm.

Is it safe to touch or pet a monkey in Barbados?

• No. Please keep your hands to yourself. Monkeys in Barbados are wild and often carry diseases and bacteria in their mouths. Touching/Playing/Holding a monkey may get you bit which can cause serious infections.

Can Green Monkeys be pets?

• Short answer - NO, they absolutely can not. There are circumstances where monkeys have become pets, often to individuals claiming to have rescued the monkey when its mother is shot or killed in some way. The owners that truly care for their monkeys will tell you the relationship is nothing but heartbreak in the end. The monkey often doesn't adapt well to captivity, and even if they do, at a certain point they will grow too big to be a cuddly pet and will become a danger to themselves and their owners. At this point the monkey needs to be released but has no where to go and would never survive in the wild on its own. The alternative is living a caged life which is never suited for a monkey.

Is it ok to support individuals who have them as pets?

• No. Pets should not be exploited for personal gain. Please do not pay anyone to have your photo taken with monkeys or for an opportunity to pet/play with the monkey. There are a few genuine owners rescuing monkeys but these endorsements only fuel the fire for bad people to continue to rip baby monkeys away from their families for personal gain.

Military Pet Travel

International pet travel, carry-on pets.

Small dogs, cats and household birds can travel in the cabin for a one-way fee that is collected at check-in. The pet must be able to fit in a soft-sided ventilated pet kennel that will go underneath the seat directly in front of you.

Please review the following requirements to ensure a safe and healthy flight with a small pet traveling as a carry-on:

  • Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old for domestic travel.
  • Your pet dog must be 6 months old if traveling to the U.S. from another country and a pet cat must be at least 16 weeks old.
  • Your pet must be at least 15 weeks old when traveling to the European Union.
  • 1 female cat or dog may travel with her un-weaned litter if the litter is between 8 weeks and 6 months of age. There is no limit on the number of animals in the litter as long as they can fit safely in the kennel.
  • 2 pets of the same breed and size between the ages of 8 weeks and 6 months may be allowed to travel in 1 kennel, as long as they are small enough to fit into a single kennel and are compatible. If the pets are allowed to travel in 1 kennel, they will be charged as 1 pet.

Pets in kennels will count as your 1 carry-on item. In addition to the kennel, you are permitted to bring 1 personal item on board the aircraft.

Seating With Your Pet

Customers with carry-on pets may not select seats in the following areas:

  • Bulkhead seats
  • An emergency exit row
  • Seats designated as “no stowage”
  • Flat-bed or Delta One seats
  • Rows 46-51 on the A330-200 aircraft
  • Rows 54-59 on the A330 -300 aircraft
  • Center seats on the B757-200 aircraft

Booking Your Pet

Carry-on kennel requirements.

Be sure to check the aircraft dimensions of your flight to ensure your pet’s kennel will fit underneath the seat directly in front of you.

Your pet and kennel must also adhere to the following requirements:

  • Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in a kennel with the ability to move around without touching or sticking out from the sides.
  • The kennel must fit underneath the seat directly in front of you.
  • The soft-sided kennel must be leak-proof and have ventilation openings on 3 sides for domestic travel and 4 sides for international travel.
  • The maximum carry-on kennel dimensions are determined by the aircraft dimensions of your flight, as the under-seat space varies by aircraft. Delta recommends a soft-sided kennel with maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11” since this fits most aircraft types.
  • Your pet must remain inside the kennel with the door secured while in a Delta boarding area, during boarding and deplaning, while in a Delta Sky Club® and while on board the aircraft.

Checking In With Your Pet

When you arrive at the airport, you will need to visit the Special Service Counter to check-in with your pet. At check-in, a Delta agent will ensure your pet and kennel meet the necessary requirements for your trip and collect the required pet fee. Remember to allow extra time at check-in for us to ensure your pet is ready for take-off.

Once you are checked in and have your cabin pet tag, you are ready to go through the security checkpoint where you are required to remove your pet from their kennel.

After the security checkpoint, your pet must remain in their kennel while at the airport, unless they are in a designated relief area.

Delta Sky Club® Pets

Carry-on pet fees.

CAD amount will be charged to exit Canada, while EUR amount will be charged to exit Europe. These fees are established by the contract of carriage in effect at the time of ticket issuance.

Carry-On Pet Exceptions

For any travel to or from the following destinations — with the exception of service animals — pets must travel as cargo and are not permitted in the cabin:

  • Pet travel is not allowed for pets originating in Brazil/Colombia
  • Pet travel is not allowed on flights to Hawaii
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Ireland
  • South Africa
  • United Kingdom
  • United Arab Emirates

Household birds are only permitted on domestic U.S. flights excluding flights to Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam. Review based on your destination or connecting flights.

The CDC has specific documentation requirements that apply to all dogs, including trained service animals, that are traveling to the United States.  Dogs entering the U.S. must appear healthy, be microchipped and be at least 6 months of age. All dogs must be accompanied by a receipt of a completed CDC Dog Import Form. Additional documentation that may be required will depend on where the dogs rabies vaccinations were administered and if, within the past 6 months, the dog has been in a high-risk country for rabies or a low-risk or rabies-free country.
