Lucy Hale Talks Long Journey To Sobriety: 'Many Relapses' And 'Many Dark Moments'

Lucy Hale is finally living the good life after overcoming her demons and achieving two-and-a-half years of sobriety.

The "Pretty Little Liars" actress opened up about her journey, recalling how her alcohol dependence started and what it took to escape that dark part of her history.

At 20-something, Lucy Hale never believed she could regain control of her life or inspire others to improve. She is receiving the 2024 Humanitarian Award from the women's addiction recovery center, Friendly House.

Lucy Hale's Alcohol Issues Began At A Young Age

The 35-year-old actress did not hold back while addressing her sobriety journey in a new interview, sharing the darkest parts of herself that once embarrassed her. She claimed her younger self would be stunned by her growth, declaring:

"I can't believe I'm at a place in my life where I can talk about the things that used to bring me so much shame."

Hale explained that her alcohol dependence began in her childhood, noting, "Since a very young age, I always felt alone and misunderstood. So as a teenager, I found alcohol — which, of course, shut my brain off."

"And it worked for me for a while, until it turned really dark," she continued, telling PEOPLE that she spent her 20s trying to overcome this challenging phase. However, battling her addiction came with repeated losses.

Hale Lost Many Battles Before Kicking Her Addiction

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lucy Hale (@lucyhale)

While reflecting on what it took to achieve sobriety, Hale noted it was a test of will, saying, "I always had a desire to change, but with any form of addiction, you become powerless to this obsession."

"I definitely had to go through my own process of getting sober. It took many, many, many years, many relapses, many dark moments, many falling on my face quite literally," she continued, adding:

"But figuratively as well to figure out what was working in my life, finding out why I was drinking, because removing alcohol is just one part of it."

Besides her desire to change, her success in "Pretty Little Liars" helped Hale stay on track. "If I'm perfectly honest , without my career and without that creative outlet, I don't know if I would've made it," she declared.

How The Actress' Career Became Her 'North Star' And A Problem

While reflecting on the significant role her career and "Pretty Little Liars" played in her sobriety journey, Hale said: "I think that show and my love of what I do was my North Star truly."

"It really gave me purpose and still gives me purpose. But I was constantly in this cycle of extreme depression and anxiety while having to show up to work and be on," the 35-year-old recalled, noting that it eventually "fueled even more drinking."

After getting caught in this toxic cycle, it took "hitting rock bottom" at 32 for Hale to finally change her life. "I made the choice on the morning of January 2, 2022, that I was going to do everything I could to get sober," she recalled.

Hale Achieved Sobriety Despite Her Initial Fears

Hale is now two-and-a-half years sober, an achievement she attained after overcoming her fear of the future. "I knew if I continued on that path, I would've lost everything I cared about," she said of her past worries, admitting:

"It was the scariest choice in my life, but also it's been the best gift. When I made that change, everything else changed. My whole life has changed."

"I still have to make the choice every day like, 'Okay, today I'm staying sober, and today I'm choosing me,' but that goes deeper than just not drinking. My life feels so good now that I wouldn't give that up for anything," Hale added.

Lucy Hale Had Breakouts During 'Pretty Little Liars'

Sobriety wasn't the only challenge Hale faced in her 20s, with The Blast  reporting that she suffered from acne early in her career. She shared that breakouts frequently happened while filming "Pretty Little Liars," confessing:

"We had to specially light my skin to reflect in a different way so you wouldn't see my acne. I remember being just so embarrassed and mortified."

"I think the reason I'm so obsessed with skincare and beauty is because I struggled with my skin — you just want to crawl in a hole," she explained, adding:

"It feels very isolating , and it can feel so heavy and so difficult. Looking back, I wish I could have had more grace and compassion with myself, but when you're in it , it's excruciating ."

Lucy Hale has embraced her acne and inspires others to overcome their addictions. On Saturday, September 14, she will receive the 2024 Humanitarian Award from Friendly House.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui as lead, Anurag Kashyap as penniless producer: Tumbbad director recalls painstaking 15-year-long journey to make film

Starring sohum shah, tumbbad went through multiple production hassle to finally release to glory in 2018. the rahi anil barve directorial is now back in theatres..

Director Rahil Anil Barve talks about the ambitious making of Tumbbad.

Filmmaker Rahi Anil Barve is overwhelmed that his much-loved mythological horror epic Tumbbad is getting a re-release . The film, which enjoys a loyal cult following, had opened to rave reviews and eventually became a surprise success in 2018. Now, years, later, the writer-director has shared two diary entries of 2011 and 2012, in which he detailed, in nearly 4,000 words, the 15-year-long backbreaking struggle to mount Tumbbad.

Presented by Eros Now and headlined by Sohum Shah , Tumbbad was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with Anand Gandhi as the creative director and Adesh Prasad as the co-director. Written by Mitesh Shah, Prasad, Barve, and Gandhi, the film was produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah, and Amita Shah. The film also stars Jyoti Malshe and Anita Date-Kelkar. While the first entry is dates back to October 25, 2011, the second is four months apart, February 2, 2012, Rahi said the idea behind sharing these in public domain was to help young director aspiring to make their own film.

long journey entertainment

The first diary entry begins with Rahi hearing a “banal horror” story by Narayan Dharap, which was narrated to him by his friend when they camped in the forest of Nagzira in 1993. The filmmaker said he doesn’t remember exactly when it became his mission to make a film out of it, but his first ever draft-cum-storyboard came around 1996/97.

“After flunking standard 10, I abandoned conventional education and did countless menial jobs. In jumps, leaps and bound, I had settled completely by the age of 20.” In his 20s, Rahi started earning Rs 50,000 and was marching towards his dream of starting his own animation studio. But something was amiss, as he felt restless despite the wealth and success.

The answer was simple, he wanted to make his own film. He resigned from his high paying job in 2005, and made a short film titled Manjha, which he filmed in December 2006, within eight days of production on a budget of Rs 60,000 by a producer named Shreyas. It was a great platform to then make Tumbbad, but the film was crumbling under the weight of its ambition, there was no producer to back the vision.

Festive offer

“Shreyas sir’s hawk-eyed manager had to agree that after six recces and two months of headbanging, no matter how frugal, Tumbbad’s budget wouldn’t be any lesser than three-and-half crores. Shreyas sir went on a wild goose chase to arrange that amount. Infected by his enthusiasm.

“I braced myself to Tumbbad within six months. Our core team of twenty, brought 150 others on board, and were all over the place. Finally, by July 2008, we fell on our faces so badly, that most of us ache and moan even three and half years after Tumbbad ran into its first stalling.”

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Rahi Anil Barve (@rahianilbarve)

“I was at my wits’ end, facing angry teams with stoic patience. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the originally casted Vinayak had come in merely on my word, without a penny in payment, putting in two months of rehearsals. He couldn’t even breathe between his rants and abuses. All efforts came to a naught just one day before our shoot in Saswad. Except for my insane self-confidence, everything was lost.”

This was a time when he had heard about the legend of filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who was bullish enough to make it on his own despite his endless struggles. He knew he had to ask Kashyap for help, as there was no one else to help him. When Rahi’s short film did reach him, Anurag said, “I haven’t got a penny on me, but I’ll produce Tumbbad, only got to figure how.

Rahi recalled how he was again on an endless trail studio shopping. “My throat went sore with 90-minute long Tumbbad narrations twice a day. The studio execs would listen on dreamily, but would say after the narration, ‘Interesting subject, but see Rahi, for Indian audiences this film can’t work, because blah blah…’ with rehearsed finesse.” All studios were refusing Tumbbad after months of endless meetings and despite a few production houses almost coming on-board, Tumbbad came to a halt again. For the second time.

“Four months later, Anurag sent Manjha to Danny Boyle. He liked it and took it in his Blu Ray edition of Slumdog. Slumdog hit gold at the Oscars, and I basked in unexpected and reflected glory after 18 months again. Capitalising on that goodwill, Anurag’s then legal advisor and counsel for Foxstar brought Fox on board. Finally, I saw clear signs that Tumbbad would finally take off. Anurag borrowed half a million from Mahi and set me up a team of six ADs.

“He was also struggling to finance Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan, which UTV chose to produce. The preproduction for Tumbbad and Udaan was in full swing at 40, Aram Nagar.” However, even this fizzled out later as Tumbbad stalled again, for the third time.

On February 2, 2012,  Rahi wrote how he had two final meetings with Soham (Shah) and “a big studio” for Tumbbad. The director recalled how he walked in with a 650-page colour storyboard and was narrating Tumbbad for over two hours.

“But, as Vinayak’s dark character unraveled gradually, Sohum’s face began to turn bitter. Sohum was afraid that negative and elderly roles at a young age (the old Vinayak from 1947) would pigeonhole him in similar offers going ahead, and he refused Tumbbad. There might have been other reasons too. Everyone was shocked out of their skins, and so was I.”

The film was stalled again, for the fourth time. But then, a new animation job opportunity knocked Rahi’s doors, which was paying him Rs 25,000. “A voice rang from my deepest depths- ‘Don’t you think its time to give up?’ I said, “Never let go of the dream. The dream merely grows or shrinks in size. The dream is shaped like Tumbbad for now. Keep waiting till the moment arrives, and earn these 25 grand now. Feed yourself first before the next battle, right?”

The director ended the note writing that it took him five more years to make Tumbbad, “but that’s a different story.” He concluded, “It was easy to give up in these fifteen years, but then I wouldn’t have experience the joy I feel today.”

‘jersey shore’ star sammi ‘sweetheart’ giancola opens up about her ivf journey: ‘i will be devastated if it doesn’t work’.

It’s the sweetest itch.

“ Jersey Shore: Family Vacation ” star Samantha “Sammi Sweetheart” Giancola  wants a baby — and she described her deeply personal IVF journey to The Post in an exclusive interview.

The 37-year-old got engaged in March and has spent the last year undergoing in-vitro fertilization treatments, which will be a focus of Part 2 of Season 7 of the MTV series, which premieres on Sept. 19.

“I’m really a private person, so this is kind of new for me. I feel weird, I guess, showing the world this aspect of my life. But it’s real and it’s what I’m going through,” she said.

The Hazlet, NJ native said she didn’t allow cameras to film her doctor appointments, but viewers will see her giving herself hormone injections — and revealing to her castmates she’s trying to get pregnant.

“I wanted to keep it a secret because at first I was like, ‘Listen, I don’t know if the outcome is what I want it to be . . . I will be devastated if it doesn’t work,'” she said.

“You’re gonna see how everything plays out, but I really kept it private for a really long time.”

She said her ex-boyfriend, fellow cast member Ronnie Ortiz-Magro “was not around” when she was going through the treatments.

“But it’s not weird because he is a coworker and we’re not associated with one another. He is just somebody that I work with,” she said.

“That part of my life is completely over and long gone for a very long time now . . . And what I do in my life does not pertain to him.”

Sammi 'Sweetheart' Giancola with her fiance Justin May

Giancola froze her eggs when she was 35 and had just started dating her now-fiancé, Justin May, who was a bartender at the cast’s former hangout, the now-shuttered club Karma in Seaside Heights, NJ.

“I was just like, ‘You know what? I’m getting older. I don’t know what’s going on in my life . . . I want to have kids one day,'” she recalled.

Before they started their fertility journey, the couple, who live on the Jersey Shore, was trying to conceive naturally.

“I’ve been with my fiancé now three years, so it’s been a long time,” she said.

She credits her groom-to-be with being her “backbone.”

“He is just very positive and uplifting,” she gushed. “If I’m feeling down or if I’m going through it, he is right there to pick me up and just bring me back to a good place where I’m focused and I’m like, ‘Okay, the end goal is positive. We’re just gonna think positive.'”

The reality star hopes her televised journey can help others.

“Maybe somebody can watch me and maybe understand or maybe they went through it or maybe they could just relate to me in some sort of way,” she said.

The brunette beauty, who was part of the original cast of “Jersey Shore,” did not return to the spinoff show, which debuted in 2018, until its sixth season, which aired in 2023.

This December, “Jersey Shore” will celebrate its 15th anniversary.

“I can’t believe it’s been 15 years. But what an amazing time with these people in my life” she said. “I adore them.”

Nick Knowles: The TV titan’s journey from DIY SOS to Strictly, and jamming with Biffy Clyro in-between

Award-winning veteran British TV presenter Nick Knowles is competing in this year's edition of Strictly Come Dancing , adding to his long list of credits on the small screen.

Knowles, 61, told the BBC : "I’m so, so excited to be doing Strictly this year. People may be more used to me getting stuck in on a building site or travelling the world, but dancing live on TV will be a whole new adventure.”

He added: "I’ve spent my whole life learning new skills and I’ve never been afraid of a challenge – there’s life in the old dog yet to take on one more big one – being taught how to dance! I’ll give it my everything... and try not to embarrass my kids of course!”

Knowles's career in television began as a production runner before becoming a reporter for TVS in South East on their show Coast to Coast until 1992. Following that, Knowles had stints on ITV and Channel 5 before finding his biggest success to date with DIY SOS , which began on BBC One in 1999.

The home improvement show, which ran until 2010 before being rebranded as DIY SOS: The Big Build , has aired 32 seasons during its long-running stint, with more than 240 episodes being broadcast in that time.

In December 2019, the show was presented with a special Bafta award at a tribute event in Bristol in recognition of its outstanding creative contribution to television. Knowles was involved in a brief scandal in 2021 after appearing in a commercial for the cereal Shreddies , which threatened to violate the BBC’s rules on commercial deals.

The list of television formats that Knowles has lent himself to also includes numerous game shows ( Who Dares Wins, Perfection, Secret Fortune, 5-Star Family Reunion ), travel documentaries ( Nick Knowles' Railway Journeys, Into the Grand Canyon with Nick Knowles, Nick Knowles in South America ) and factual daytime series such as City Hospital and Real Rescues .

Given Knowles is one of the most familiar faces on British TV, it won't be surprising that Strictly won't be his first celebrity-based contest show either, with the star having competed on the 2018 edition of I'm Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here . He finished sixth overall.

Knowles hasn't restricted himself exclusively to TV during his career. In 2016 he co-wrote the comedy movie Golden Years about a group of pensioners who tour National Trust properties and rob nearby banks, played by Simon Callow, Una Stubbs, Alun Armstrong, Bernard Hill, Virginia McKenna and Phil Davis.

He's also had a keen interest in music throughout his life and in 2017 wrote his first and, to this date, last album called Every Kind of People , which reached 92 in the UK album charts. The record, which mostly consists of covers by artists such as Robert Palmer, John Mayer, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles, reportedly came about after a representative from Universal saw him jamming with several other acts, one of which he claims was Biffy Clyro .

Aside from his work in the entertainment world, Knowles also supports several charities and in 2017 confirmed he was “flexitarian”, eating "mostly vegan food, occasionally veggie if vegan not available, rarely meat and fish”.

The Long Journey Home review

by Noah Caldwell-Gervais

The Long Journey Home is a game of great ambition — an ambition that pulled me in before I realized the limited scope of its mechanics.

If you watch a trailer for The Long Journey Home or read the description on its Steam store page, you’ll get a sense for what this game wants to be: a procedurally generated science-fiction universe; a coherent, emergent sci-fi odyssey that players can shape through diplomacy, craft and skill. It’s a tantalizing idea, and one that got me immediately excited to discover more.

The reality is a lot less appealing than the pitch. The Long Journey Home contains some colorful ideas, but it’s dragged down by an overwhelming dependence on repetitive, discouraging tests of mechanical patience and skill.

The Long Journey Home stylizes itself as a more scientific, literary roguelike. You play as the guiding hand behind an expedition to test humanity’s first jump drive. It malfunctions, of course, and deposits you on the other side of the galaxy, around a hundred jumps away from Earth. To get back, you’ll have to meet alien races, conquer hostile terrain and upgrade your ship. At least, that’s the framing idea.

The vast majority of my time with The Long Journey Home was spent controlling the velocity of a fragile spacecraft as I harvested resources from procedurally generated planets. On the primary star map, gravity is represented as a grid, folding and dipping as planets, moons and stars leave their gravitational indentations. And then there’s the shuttle landing minigame, where you have to settle your lander down on a resource while managing approach vector, wind speed and escape velocity.

These are the overwhelmingly primary mechanics of the game. No matter what the page on the Steam store promises about diplomacy, trading and surprise encounters, eighty percent of the actual game is trying not to smash into the ground during these frustrating sequences.

It’s extraordinarily difficult to navigate around mountains, planets and meteorites in The Long Journey Home . A small miscalculation of velocity when you’re trying to achieve stable orbit, and you bounce off the atmosphere, damaging your ship, injuring your crew and forcing you to try again. Even after over a dozen hours familiarizing myself with the game and its controls, I found myself approaching each new planet three or four times, swinging wide, coming up short, too fast, too shallow.

The lander sequences are even more unforgiving and awkward. I routinely shaved off over half the lander’s health just trying to perch it atop the meager resources the planet offers. Generally speaking, I did more damage to my lander trying to collect metal than I could ever repair with the metal harvested. Not to mention that bouncing your lander off the surface will seriously injure your pilot. A simple mistake can cause two or three semi-permanent damage conditions that you’ll have to spend precious (and rare) items to repair.

long journey entertainment

The Long Journey Home is a game dependent on extremely miserly resource management, and any kind of deep progress is only made possible by planning your expeditions with care. The game gives you an impression like you don’t have to land on dangerous planets, that you can pick and choose to only make dangerous landings in emergencies, but the math just never added up that way. It can take over five individual metal nodes to fix your ship, and a single mineral resource is almost never enough to allow a system-to-system jump. Being imprecise with velocity and skimming off a planet’s atmosphere can give you a 30 percent penalty to filling up your jump drive, which can quickly leave you stranded.

Combat adds a whole new dimension of pain to the experience

So you have to hoover up everything you see to survive. But there are so many serious, long-lasting, deeply impactful penalties for even the simplest of navigation errors in the simplest conditions that it’s hard to come out ahead. I routinely quit back to the main menu and reloaded over and over to ensure that I would pull off successful resource runs with minimal damage to my lander. The most intriguing elements of The Long Journey Home are the ones teased as being in the late game: discovering ancient relics, resolving major interstellar conflicts, grand arcs of plot that are only suggested in the early game. But the whole thing is so mechanically punitive, so quick to mire you in the simplest, least engaging mechanics, that actually arriving at those most complex levels seems as distant as Earth itself.

Combat adds a whole new dimension of pain to the experience: Your ship, at least to start, is only capable of firing broadsides. These sequences play out like top-down naval engagements where your puny human vessel, firing and moving as agonizingly slowly as a Spanish galleon, must spar off against alien ships with homing missiles and defensive fighters. After dozens of fights, I still couldn’t pin down proper aiming technique. My only workable tactic was to ram the enemy vessel, hook on the geometry of their ship, and fire point-blank. Combat can be expected about once per star system after the first star cluster, with some systems holding a half dozen enemy ships who all ask for Blood or Coin.

long journey entertainment

The aggressive pace of the combat encounters further gates the narrative content behind a skill wall. There are complicated systems of allegiance with the aliens you meet, and they respond in complex ways to prompts and quests. For example, I accidently showed the leader of a pirate base the head of one of his lieutenants, whose ship I destroyed when they tried to rob me. At first, he screamed at the insult, then immediately offered me a job as a pirate for my bloodthirsty gall. Or consider an over-friendly race who offer helpful items, leaving you to realize too late that the items give your crew an infestation. Narratively speaking, this is engaging. But mechanically, it’s infuriating: insult on top of injury. The excitement of being offered a piracy job is dulled when you consider that it means you have to spend more time with the combat minigame.

I can tell that The Long Journey is a complicated game, but the narrative is the least complex thing about it. That’s the fundamental frustration of the game: It’s marketed to people exactly like me, sci-fi fans who want a video game that’s grounded in the optimism and curiosity of the science fiction novels of yesteryear. Artistically, thematically, the game follows in those footsteps. But don’t get the impression that it’s a casual game by any means. It’s a cruel and finicky physics puzzler. It requires absolute attention be paid to each one of its many mechanical systems, even on the easiest difficulty. It supposes the power of your imagination is enough to make micromanaging the curve and flight velocity of a cursor on a screen exciting.

The Long Journey Home may hold many secrets and wonders, but it’s hard to hold on to the promise of them when the game’s more likely to break both your legs as soon as you step off the front porch. The promise of a truly narrative-driven roguelike is tantalizing, but this isn’t that game. It’s just as tied to your skill with the controller as any bullet hell — more so, really, because you carry the consequences of even the slightest mistake a long ways before finally seeing the game over screen. It promises to be a game about the wonder of unbound space; instead, it’s more about the infuriating heartbreak of high wind speeds in a low gravity environment.

22 awesome things to do on a long flight.

Cazzy Magennis

After many years of awesome travels, we have taken a lot of long haul flights, and I’ll let you in on a secret: I absolutely LOVE flying long haul.

I've taken hundreds of flights in my years of travel, and about half of those have been long haul!

It’s actually one of my favourite parts of travelling I love flying, I love airplane food and drinks, and that’s all in economy.

I imagine I’d love business class a lot more, but well, business class is expensive!

So, since I love flying, I’ve got lots of great travel tips on things you can do on a long flight.

I’ve tried and tested all of these tips, and hopefully they’ll help keep you distracted and entertained on your next long haul flight.

But if you're looking for a super quick answer, here are my top 5 things to do on a long flight:

  • Movie time : not just new releases but movies that require extra time, such as the Lord of the rings trilogy, Harry Potters, the Hobbit, etc!
  • Adult Colouring books: Seriously underrated and such a fun thing to do on a flight whilst listening to some background music
  • Free drinks: Well, not ALL long haul carriers offer complimentary alcohol, but when they do, I love to grab a drink and just relax!
  • Work work work:  If you've got a remote job, then a long haul flight is a great excuse to catch up on work, especially since lots of airlines have WiFi in the sky!
  • In flight games : Lots of long haul carriers have games built in on the screens such as quizzes, and you can even join in with other passengers!

Travellerspoint

1. Catch up on long movies

Life is often busy, and a long haul flight is the perfect time to catch up on those blockbuster movies that are super long and you just can’t find the time for back on the ground!

Some of my favourite movies to watch on a long haul flight include:

  • Lord Of The Rings
  • Harry Potter
  • The Bourne Movies
  • The Hunger Games

And I’m sure there are many more you can think of!

I absolutely love ordering a drink, a snack and just getting comfortable whilst watching a movie. It’s like my own little cinema experience up in the air.

And if you’re travelling with a partner or a friend, you can both watch the same movie at the same time.

2. Bring your laptop and do some work

When you run a business online, a long haul flight is actually the perfect excuse to get some work done!

Use your free time to catch up on work that you’ve been putting off, or if you’re a university student it’s the perfect time to catch up on reading and essays.

The majority of long haul carriers provide charging facilities so your laptop will never run out of juice.

For me, I always have a backlog of past travel photos that need editing , and this is the perfect chance to do just that and get even more excited about the trip ahead.

catch up on work when flying

3. Play cards

Bradley and I LOVE to play cards, we play cards most evenings when we are travelling, before or after dinner.

It’s no different on a long haul flight.

If you’re looking to pass the time when flying, then this is a great option.

There are so many different games you can play, whether you're flying with a toddler , with a friend, or even solo.

My go-to games include:

  • Solitaire - when flying solo
  • Rummy - when flying with friends
  • Snap - when for flying with kids

4. Bring mini travel games for fun

Nowadays there are lots of mini travel size versions of games that are absolutely perfect for flights.

I’ve actually purchased a few of these over the years (I’ll admit I’ve lost many too), but playing these games are perfect if you’ve got a travel companion.

Some of my favourite mini travel games include:

  • 4 in a row
  • Snakes & Ladders

Top Trumps is another awesome game to play with a fellow traveller, and they’ve a good game to have whilst travelling in general too.

5. Walk around the cabin

Walking around the cabin is not only a great thing to do on a long flight to keep yourself busy, but it’s actually important for your in-flight health.

You’d be surprised at just how easy it is to get blood clots when travelling long haul, so it’s important you keep your blood circulation flowing by moving your feet.

Take a wander through the cabin to get some exercise.

6. Do some colouring

Colouring isn’t just a fun activity for children on long haul flights, it’s perfect for adults too. Bradley brought me an adult colouring book a few years ago and I love it.

Colouring is really therapeutic and relaxing, so it’s a perfect activity for a long haul flight.

You can even do it whilst watching a movie that doesn’t need your full attention.

7. Read a book

This is another one of my favourite things to do on a long flight!

I constantly have a list of books that I want to read, but never seem to find the time to read them.

Well, a long haul flight is the perfect excuse. Even if you don’t want to carry physical books with you (because they do take up space when travelling for longer periods of time), you can download books via the Kindle app.

There’s no limit on many books you can travel with then.

8. Listen to music

When it's winding down to the last hour of my flight, I often find myself not in the mood to do much, and this is when I find it’s the perfect time to listen to some music.

It really wakes me up and gets me excited about the destination I’m arriving too.

Airplanes often have a vast range of music on offer from all-time classics, movie soundtracks (which I love, but have to stop myself from bursting into song mid-flight), or even radio stations playing a variety of tunes.

Or, of course you can just listen to your own music that you’ve got on your phone.

9. Listen to a podcast/audiobook

Bradley is a big fan of audiobooks and podcasts and what better way to spend your time than listening to something new.

Audiobooks are perfect for those who don’t particularly enjoy reading, or find they get tired from doing so, and podcasts are great for learning and engaging with topics that interest you.

A great place to find inspiration is Audible .

Bradley absolutely loves autobiographies and anything business related.

Here's his top 5 recommendations:

  • Elon Musk: Unabridged
  • Richard Branson: Losing My Virginity
  • 4 Hour Work Week
  • How To Be Like Walt

10. Learn a language

There are sooo many apps nowadays that teach you new languages, and there are the traditional language handbooks too.

I always think it’s important to learn a few local phrases of the language that your chosen destination speaks, and when you're on the flight, that’s the perfect time to learn!

They’ll be fresh in your brain by the time you land, and you’ll be speaking the lingo in no time…..(well, at least a few phrases!).

11. Play quizzes with your flying friend

Why not have fun with your flying partner by taking some quizzes.

There are so many quiz questions online that you’ll run out, or you could get creative and make up your own.

Even if you’re flying solo, it’s still possible to do quizzes.

Under the games section on most airplane entertainment systems, there will be quizzes to play. I love to play these on long haul flights.

12. Crossword and Wordsearch

These are two very traditional things to do on a long flight, but they're effective.

These are perfect for passing time and keeping your mind working and active.

You can’t beat a good word search or puzzle on a flight, and they’re perfect for when you’re lying on the beach too.

13. Read up on your adventure

Another great thing you can do whilst flying long haul is to take this as the opportunity to read up your destination and plan more of your trip .

Of course you’ll have already done this to a certain extent, but if you’ve bought a guide book, then this is the perfect time to read it.

And actually, most airline entertainment systems also have little guide books and information about the destination you're visiting too, so you can feel super excited about your adventure.

Companies like Rough Guides & Lonely Planet produce some great guides!

14. Have a few drinks

I love to have a couple of drinks on a long haul flight, especially if I’m with a company.

On most long haul carriers, alcohol is complimentary, and on some really great airlines, they serve actual cocktails in economy ( Singapore Airlines , I’m looking at you!).

So why not have a couple of drinks on your flight.

Just remember that alcohol affects you quicker at higher altitudes, and it will dehydrate you quicker, so drink water in between.

complimentary drinks on long haul flight

15. Catch up on sleep

If there is nothing else you want to do, then why not simply catch up on some sleep.

It’s easier for some people to sleep on airplanes than others, but if you get a good neck pillow and eye mask, they can really help.

Or, if you can see that there is a row of seats free close to you, then why not make yourself a little bed!

amenity kit on long haul flight

16. Chat with the air hostess

I’ve had some great chats with air hostesses on flights, and whilst they don’t have all the time in the world to stand and chat with everyone, there will be points in the flights where they are free and you can have a quick chat.

This is especially true if you’re on a pretty empty flight!

17. Play Ipad/tablet games

Tablets and Ipads are the perfect flying companion because there are lots of games you can play.

The majority of games you can download are free, or if you’ve got a favourite game, you can purchase it and take advantage of the extra time you have to play.

One of my favourite games for a long flight is “Candy Crush”. Time seems to fly when I’m playing that game!

18. Surf the internet

The internet is becoming more and more accessible when flying.

Most long haul carriers provide some form of WiFi connection, and they usually give you a little free sample .

But, purchasing WiFi can be quite reasonable, and worth it for a very long flight.

Plus it’s pretty cool messaging someone when you’re flying in the air over different countries!

It’s a fun novelty.

19. Do a bit duty free shopping

Duty free shopping on board?! Why not!

Duty free prices are excellent value and actually this is a great place to pick up some presents for yourself, or for family and friends.

You can get brilliant deals on makeup, perfume, travel gadgets and even alcohol.

A little bit of in-flight shopping never hurt anyone...

20. Binge watch a TV show

Seriously one of the best things to do on a long flight.

Has someone constantly been telling you to watch a certain series, but you don’t have the time? Well, now you do!

There is often lots of choice on airplane entertainment systems, or you can download the series to your phone before you fly via Netflix.

Some binge-worthy TV shows I can recommend include:

  • You (Netflix original)
  • Ozark (Netflix original)
  • Game of Thrones
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Breaking Bad

21. Play the onboard games

Most airline entertainment systems not only have music, TV shows and movies, but they actually have a whole section on games!

I actually love this, and a lot of them are two players, so you can play with the person next to you.

The games vary with each airline, but I love playing quiz games, such as “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”.

22. Relax and rejuvenate with facemasks

Flying long haul dehydrates your skin quite badly, so I sometimes take this as an excuse to perform a little skin TLC.

If you’re in business, they provide you with a range of face products and creams, but if you’re in economy, you can simply bring your own face mask on board.

Pop it on mid-way during your flight (perhaps before you plan on taking a nap) and relax!

I’ve actually only started recently doing this on flights, and I feel like it makes a great difference to my flying experience and for when I land.

Tips for travelling on a plane

Below I take you through some useful and generic tips for travelling on a plane that I’ve learnt over the last few years.

1. Wear flight socks

Flight socks are not only recommended for people who have circulation issues, but for all travellers who are flying long haul.

Lots of airlines provide you with flight socks in your little economy amenity pack, but since they’re cutting costs, I wouldn’t rely on that.

Instead, purchase your own which you can reuse on every long haul flight you take.

2. Pack snacks

I love checking out the menu on my flight before I fly but sometimes it’s not possible to get the meal you really want, and sometimes it might not taste as good as you hoped.

On a long haul flight, you don’t want to go hungry, so pack some snacks with you that you know you love!

inflight meal

3. Keep drinking water

Water helps you keep hydrated on the flight.

There are so many elements to flying that dehydrate your body including the altitude, the air system and more, so if you want to avoid landing with a headache and a pretty tired body, then stay hydrated throughout your flight with water (especially if you’re drinking alcohol too).

‍ Remember you can request water at any time by asking an air hostess, or walk to the galley and ask for yourself if you want to get some exercise too.

4. Plan your flight schedule before you go

It’s always a good idea to look at what time you're landing and how to plan your flight with that. So you can work out when is the best time to have a sleep, when you’re food times are, and when is a good time to play games, watch movies and anything else you’ve got planned.

Once you plan your flight, you’ll suddenly realise time will go quicker and you’ll be less worried about going bored when flying long haul.

5. Freshen up before you land

When I know there is around 1 hour left of my flight time, I take this as the opportunity to freshen up and get ready for landing.

I typically do a face mask, or put moisturizer on my skin, do my teeth, and apply some new makeup for landing.

This makes me feel better so that I’m ready for my adventure once I’ve landed.

I actually limit my toilet breaks when flying long haul (because I like to sit at the window and that's just inconvenient for everyone involved haha), but I always head to the toilet at the end of the flight so I can freshen up too!

6. Bring a small light jacket on board

A lot of long haul carriers provide blankets on board the aircraft, but sometimes you don’t want a blanket, and they’re just awkward if you’re trying to keep warm and eat at the same time.

Planes can get cold with the air system in action, so I always suggest having a light jacket with you that you can pop on when it gets chilly.

Then you can use your blanket for sleeping.

Long Flights Essential Packing List

Use this long haul packing list to ensure you have a fuss-free flight and make sure you don’t forget anything important in your hand luggage.  ‍

  • ‍ Facemask and/or face moisturizer
  • Flight socks  ‍

Everything You Need To Keep Kids Entertained During Long Car Rides

Senior Staff Writer, HuffPost

long journey entertainment

Summer road trip season is upon us, and with it, the whines and wails of children who have been cooped up in the backseat of a car for far too long. Whether you’re traveling with babies , toddlers , school-aged children or teens, keeping kids happy and occupied is a vital component of stress-free travel.

Screen time is helpful, but it’s not the only option — especially for small children who can get easily overstimulated. And although nothing beats getting lost in a good old-fashioned book, it’s not an option for those of us who get carsick the second we step into a moving vehicle.

Luckily, there are tons of options for parents looking to keep kids entertained during long car rides, from audiobooks to magnetic board games and more.

Don’t let hours of a long car journey pass you by, and use these creative things to do on a long car ride to pass the time in fun, productive, and entertaining ways.

Things to Do on a Long Car Ride or Road Trip

Things to do on a long car ride (ideas 1-14 listed below.).

Fun Things to Do

1. record the trip.

To ensure you remember the trip for a long time, record some footage of what you get up to. Then, when you get home, you can edit your footage into a video that commemorates your trip.

Then, if you’d like to share your video with the world, post it on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok and watch the likes and comments roll in!

2. Take an Unexpected Detour

If you’re in the mood for an adventure and have the time, why not take an unexpected detour?

Take an alternative route to where you’re heading, or just go where the wind takes you. You never know where you’ll end up!

3. Stop at a Beauty Spot and Take Photos

Regardless of your destination, you’re bound to come across a few beauty spots on your journey. So stop the car and go and take a few shots of the surrounding scenery.

It’s also a good excuse to stretch your legs for a few minutes before hitting the road again.

4. Record a Timelapse Video

Timelapse videos are a wonderful way to capture long journeys and tell an intriguing visual story of getting from A to B.

You can set up a GoPro, camera, or your smartphone on the top of the dashboard or get one of the passengers to document the journey using a timelapse app.

Road Trip Games to Play

5. number plate game.

A popular car journey game is the number plate game. It can be played in various ways. The easiest way is to find number plates from different countries and award points based on the amount each participant finds.

However, if you’d like to mix it up a little, you could also try to make words out of number plates and vote on which you like best!

6. ‘I Spy’

‘I Spy’ is a classic road trip game that many of us will have played at some point in our lives. It’s easy enough for younger travelers to understand and allows everyone in the car to get involved.

Just make sure that you pick something that can be seen at all times, such as the sky, trees, road, and other similar options.

7. ’20 Questions’

The game ’20 Questions’ is as straightforward as it sounds. Simply think of a person, a place, or an object and get other participants to ask “yes” or “no” questions until they reach the correct answer.

8. Name the World’s Capital Cities

Another popular game is to name the world’s capital cities. Pick a continent and ask others in the car to name the capital cities.

You’ll be surprised at how fun the game is, especially if you’re interested in geography!

9. ‘Guess the Tune’

Warm up your vocal cords with a game of ‘guess the tune!’ Participants simply have to hum a famous tune, and others have to guess which tune they’re humming.

You can spend hours playing this fun game that all passengers can get involved in.

10. ‘Would You Rather?’

Get everyone in the car involved in a game of ‘Would You Rather?’ Ask questions such as “would you rather have the ability to fly or be invisible?” and “would you rather have a pause or a rewind button?”.

This game gives you a chance to come up with some really creative questions and learn more about everyone playing!

If you need a little inspiration, take a look at our 100+ “would you rather?” questions to give you plenty of ideas.

Productive Things to Do

11. take a nap if not driving.

If you’re not driving, why not have a little snooze to help the time pass quicker? If you’re finding it hard to sleep in the car, put in your headphones and listen to relaxing instrumental music or a calming audiobook to help you drift off to sleep.

12. Write a To-Do List

Kill some time on a long journey by writing a to-do list for when you get home. It’ll help you feel more organized and get important tasks done.

Additionally, by writing tasks down, you can forget about them until you get home, meaning you can fully concentrate on the road trip.

13. Take Exercise Breaks

Long stints of driving can make you feel tired. Stopping for regular breaks to stretch your legs will help you stay alert and feel good in yourself.

It’s best to take a break every 3-4 hours to get your blood flowing and joints moving before hitting the road again.

14. Listen to Audiobooks

Platforms such as Audible offer a wide variety of exciting audiobooks. If you’re bored in the car, put on an entertaining audiobook that everyone else in the car will enjoy.

15. Learn a New Language

If you’re not driving, why not install language apps such as Duolingo on your phone and start learning a new language?

After a couple of hours of using the app, you’ll be surprised at how much you learn in such a short period of time.

16. Write a Meal Plan

Get yourself prepared for a new week by writing a delicious meal plan to pass the time on a long journey. To ensure the meal plan is varied, research some new recipes that you haven’t tried before.

17. Stop at a Car Wash

Stopping to go through a car wash is a productive way to take a well-deserved driving break. If you want a more comfortable journey, you might choose to pay for your car to be cleaned on the inside, too.

A trip in a clean, clutter-free vehicle will help reduce your stress levels as well as those of your passengers.

By Yourself

18. call a family member or loved one via a handsfree set.

How many times do we let time slip us by when meaning to call and catch up with an old friend or a dear family member?

Use your time in the car to call some friends and family you haven’t spoken to in a while . Use Bluetooth and a hands-free set or your car’s Bluetooth to make sure you’re calling in a safe way.

19. Sing Your Favorite Songs

A solo car journey is an ideal time to belt out a few of your favorite songs with no one around to judge your singing voice!

20. Listen to a Podcast

Apps such as Spotify have a wide variety of podcasts to choose from. So whether you’re into history, science, entertainment, nature, or anything else, someone out there will have created a podcast that interests you.

21. Go for a Drive-thru Coffee Break

You must take regular driving breaks to rest and refresh yourself before hitting the road again. So why not grab a coffee and relax for 30 minutes before you get back behind the wheel? The caffeine will help keep you awake and alert.

With Friends

22. tell each other jokes.

If you’re on a road trip with friends, pass the time by telling each other your best jokes. You’ll have each other laughing in no time.

Laughter reduces stress and can boost your well-being due to the release of the ‘feel-good hormone’ endorphins.

23. Discuss Past Adventures

Reminisce about old times by discussing your past adventures as a group. You can recount all the exciting, funny memories created with your closest friends.

Nothing feels nicer than remembering all the wonderful times you’ve had with the people you love.

24. Camp for a Night

If you’re not on a strict schedule, camping for a night can turn a good trip into a great one.

Find a local campsite, pitch your tents, light a bonfire and spend the evening discussing the trip so far and planning your next steps.

25. Have a Heart-to-Heart

A car journey is a perfect time to bond with your friends by having a good heart-to-heart. By sharing your hopes, dreams, and aspirations, you’ll feel much more connected as a group.

26. Plan a Future Trip

If you’re avid travelers, you might want to plan a future trip while you’re all together in person.

27. Find a Unique Roadside Attraction to Visit

Wherever you’re traveling, you’re bound to find some unique places to visit while you’re on the road. Pull up a map, and see if there’s a one-of-a-kind landmark or place of interest you can stop by.

For Couples

28. watch a sunrise or sunset.

One of the most romantic things you can do as a couple is watch a sunrise or sunset. If you’re on a road trip, set some time aside to watch either a sunrise or sunset with your loved one. You won’t regret it!

29. Have a Picnic

Food and drink outlets at service stations are expensive. Instead, save money and enjoy some time outdoors by having a picnic with your partner.

Some service stations have green areas with benches where you can enjoy a peaceful picnic before you resume your journey.

Or, you can simply find a beautiful place to stop and have your picnic in the great outdoors.

30. Stop for a Romantic Dinner

If you’ve got time, why not stop for a romantic dinner in a nearby town? Out on the road, you’re likely to pass plenty of nearby towns you can stop at for a quiet, intimate meal together.

31. Take Driving Shifts

For a more comfortable journey, take shifts driving if you’ve both got a driving license. It gives each of you some time to relax before you start your next shift.

32. Play the Quiet Game

If the kids are getting loud and overexcited, playing the quiet game can give you a few moments of peace.

Simply ask your kids, “who can stay quiet the longest?” to buy yourself a few minutes of quiet.

33. Give them a Sticker Book

Kids love sticker books! You’ll be surprised at how long little ones can spend decorating a sticker book.

You can even purchase sticker books based on your children’s favorite movies. They’ll be occupied for hours, giving you some much-needed peace and quiet.

34. Coloring Books

If your child isn’t interested in stickers, they may get hours of fun out of a coloring book. Again, you can purchase themed coloring books based on your child’s favorite movies and TV series, which will make them love the book even more!

35. Play Some Music for them to Sing Along to

Children love a good singsong. So put on a few nursery rhymes or tunes from their favorite shows, and have a sing-along with them.

It’ll make them feel happy, help them use up energy, and help them nod off to sleep easier afterward.

With Teenagers

36. play car games.

Games such as ’20 Questions’ and ‘Would You Rather’ are a great way to get teenagers involved on car journeys.

These games are easy to tailor to any age group, meaning you can get adolescents interested with questions they’d find entertaining.

37. Document the Journey on Social Media Together

Most teenagers are avid social media users. To pass the time on a long journey, they’ll want to interact with friends and post updates such as photos and videos.

If they’re feeling up to it, they might also create entertaining TikTok videos to share with their followers.

38. Pack Snacks

If you don’t want to stop regularly, pack the car with accessible snacks that your teens can reach for whenever they feel hungry.

Good snack options include popcorn, cereal bars, fruit, and if you’re craving sugar, chocolate bars. You’ll thank us later!

39. Have Honest Conversations About Their Futures, Hopes, and Dreams

Sometimes, it can be hard to get a teenager to open up. By asking the right questions and using the time in the car to listen, you can start deep and meaningful conversations about their futures, what they like doing, and where they see themselves in the future.

Such conversations will help you bond as a family and let them know you’re listening to them and taking their futures seriously.

40. Play Video Games

Today, thousands of games are available on phones and portable consoles such as the Nintendo Switch and tablets such as the iPad. The beauty of these consoles is that they can be taken anywhere and are easy to use on the go.

Hours of tedium and boredom when you’re hitting the road for hours at a time can be a thing of the past with these fun and simple ideas.

Be you traveling alone, with friends, or with the whole family, a little intuition and planning can go a long way to making sure the trip is fun for everyone involved.
