Although each country has different requirements, here are some general rules:

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your intended departure date from the country you’re traveling to. Don’t leave it too late to renew your passport .
• Consider a new passport when you have accumulated a lot of stamps. Although most countries only require 1 blank page , many require 2 blank pages  (and some even need 3).
• You may be asked for proof of onward travel , which is not a problem if you have a return ticket. If you plan on country-hopping, you must have proof of your travel plans. You may be refused boarding to your planned destination if you cannot adequately demonstrate to immigration officers that you plan on leaving their country. If you’re unsure when you plan on going, you can buy a refundable onward flight and re-book later.
• Some countries require that you have adequate medical insurance to cover your stay. Regardless of whether it is mandatory, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Check out our guide to travel insurance to find the best one for you.
• It is rare, but you may be asked for proof of funds and will need to satisfy immigration so that you can support your travels. This can catch you off guard, and trying to log in to your bank account on airport Wi-Fi can be a bit frantic. To be prepared, ensure you have a copy of a bank statement or a screenshot on your phone.

Africa is a mixed bag for tourist visa requirements, with half of the prominent safari destinations requiring visas and the others not. Be sure to apply in advance where possible to avoid any panic or stress at the airport.

Algeria Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($160)

Stay permitted: 90 days maximum at each entry

• You will need a visa in advance unless you are part of an organized excursion from a cruise ship, in which case you can obtain a visa on arrival.
• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have 1 page per stamp . You may experience some difficulties if you have an Israeli stamp.
• You can apply for a visa in person or via mail at the embassy in Washington, D.C., if you are there (or nearby in North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia). If you are based anywhere else, you must apply at the New York consulate.
• Visa applications take at least a week, and you will be required to submit 2 forms, 2 passport photos, and proof of travel. You may also need to provide evidence of travel insurance.

Botswana Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: 90 days

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and you can stay in Botswana for 90 days within a 12-month period without a visa. Your passport should have 3 or more unused pages, 1 blank page per entry.

Egypt Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($25 single entry, $60 multiple entry)

Stay permitted: 30 days

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have 1 blank page.
• You can apply for an e-visa prior to travel and are advised to do so at least 7 days before departure.
• Single-entry visas cost $25, or you can pay $60 for a multiple-entry visa.
• You will need to have a printout of your e-visa and travel itinerary.
• Tourists entering Egypt via the Taba border from Israel may get a 14-day no-fee visa for travel in the Sinai Peninsula or the 30-day visa as above for more comprehensive travel within Egypt.

Kenya Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($51)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages.
• You will need proof of yellow fever immunization, or you may be denied entry.
• Single-entry visas are currently available at the airport but be aware there are plans to phase this out in favor of an e-visa system . (E-visa is mandatory before boarding the flight; learn more at https://kenyaembassydc.org/evisa/ )
• An e-visa takes 2 business days to process, and you will need to take a printed copy with you when you travel to Kenya.
• Two categories of single-entry visits are available. Category 2 Single Entry Visa is valid for travel within 3 months of the issue date. Category 3 Single Entry Visa is valid for travel within 1 month of the issue date. Both allow a stay of up to 90 days in Kenya, which can be extended for a further 90 days at immigration headquarters in Nairobi for a maximum stay of 6 months.

Lesotho Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months (6 months to be safe) and have 1 page per entry stamp.
• Tourists can stay for 30 days and can extend for an additional 30 days — 5 extensions are permitted for a total stay of 180 days.

Mauritius Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: 60 days

• You will need a valid passport with 1 blank page.
• You will need to provide proof of onward or return travel. You may also be asked to provide proof of sufficient funds (at least $100 per night for the duration of your stay).

Morocco Tourist Visa Requirements

• You’ll need a passport valid for 6 months, and 1 full page is required for an entry stamp.
• Ensure that your passport is stamped when entering Morocco and isn’t damaged, as this may cause issues on departure.

Mozambique Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: No for those traveling to the country and not residing with a citizen or resident of Mozambique (i.e., those staying at a hotel, guest house, or lodge). Yes for anyone visiting a citizen or resident of Mozambique.

• You will need a passport valid for 6 months with at least 3 blank pages for a visa and stamps.
• Proof of round-trip flight and hotel reservation.
• Visas are available on arrival ($50) for all nationalities and require an accommodation reservation, an onward plane ticket, and a valid passport with 3 empty pages and 6 months validity.
• All passport data pages, visa application forms, and documents must be scanned in one PDF file per applicant (except 2 passport-size photos, money order, and prepaid return label and envelope). It needs to be emailed to the Consulate.
• Processing time takes place once the pre-approval from Immigration in Mozambique and the physical documents/requirements are received. This may be 3 to 10 business days.
• Submit 2 passport-size photographs (passport photos must be in color and with a white background).
• Include a self-addressed envelope or a pre-paid air bill with a tracking number (preferably FedEx) unless the application is brought to the Embassy in person.
• Payment must be only by money order in U.S. dollars, and  payable to the Embassy of Mozambique .

Namibia Tourist Visa Requirements

• You’ll need a passport valid for at least 6 months with at least 3 blank pages.
• Immigration officials in Namibia have been known to give shorter stays, so check your entry stamp and the validity of your stay to be safe.

Nigeria Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have at least 1 blank page.
• Nigeria does have a visa-on-arrival program, but tourists will not be eligible.
• You will need to complete a visa application form and have confirmation of your online payment. In addition to the visa fee of $160, there is a charge of ~$41 with each application, and you will need the receipt. Important Note : Selected visa may include an additional fee of $65 for biometric capture.
• You’ll also need a letter of invitation from a host willing to accept responsibility for you and a copy of their passport.
• A copy of your return flights and hotel reservation is required.
• You must provide proof that you have had polio and yellow fever vaccinations.

• U.S. citizens can apply for an E-visa, which takes 3 business days to process (not including the day E-visa , which takes 3 business days to process (not including the day you apply).
• You should note that immigration laws and regulations for Uzbekistan are known to be enforced at the discretion of border control officers. While the information provided above and from the Uzbek government may be correct, the arrival situation may differ.

Vietnam Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($25 Single Entry, $50 Multiple Entry)

Europe is one of the most accessible continents for U.S. citizens to travel to, predominantly because of The Schengen Agreement, which includes 26 countries that have abolished their internal borders to facilitate free movement.

• It is recommended that you have at least 6 months validity left on your passport. Usually, your passport will not be stamped, but you should still have at least 1 blank page.
• Israel has a visa exemption policy in place for U.S. citizens and permits stays of up to 90 days.

Jordan Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($56)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and 1 page is required for entry stamp.
• Jordan issues visas on arrival for U.S. citizens that permit a stay of 30 days. You can also apply for the visa beforehand, which takes 5 business days. Double-entry and multi-entry visas are also available from the Embassy.

Lebanon Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from the date of entry, have 1 page for an entry stamp, and must not have any Israeli stamps or visas.
• U.S. citizens can get a free 30-day visa on arrival, which can be extended to 3 months through the General Security office .

Oman Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($130/$52/$13)

Stay permitted: 30 days (U.S. citizens are visa exempt for 14 days )

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and 1 page per entry stamp.
• You can apply for an E-visa in advance
• U.S. citizens are eligible for a 1-year multi-entry visa that allows stays of up to 30 days at a time. There is also the option of a single-entry 30-day stay and a single-entry 10-day stay visa. The 1-year multiple-entry visa costs 50 Omani Rials (~ $130), the 30-day single-entry visa costs 20 Omani Rials (~ $52), and the 10-day single-entry visa costs 5 Omani Rials (~ $13). Qatar Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months with a minimum of 2 blank pages.
• On arrival, U.S. citizens are entitled to visa-free entry for a period of 30 days at any MOI service center or airport immigration office. The 3-day visa waiver entitles you to multiple entries during that period.

Saudi Arabia Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes (eVisa: $142; VOA: $80)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and 1 page required for entry stamp.
• U.S. Nationals are eligible for an eVisa , which costs ~$142 (including application fee and medical insurance fee), granting multiple entries for 1 year from the issue date. In each entry, you can stay up to 90 days.
• You also have the option of a Visa on Arrival, which costs $80 (only Visa fee). This visa allows a stay of up to 90 days. The number of entries permitted depends on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The multiple-entry visa is valid for a year from the issue date.

Syria Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: n/a

• A valid passport and visa are required to travel to Syria. The passport should have 1 page available for an entry stamp.
• However, as of March 2014, Syria suspended its embassy and consular services, making obtaining a visa problematic.

Turkey Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will require a passport that is valid for 6 months beyond your date of entry and has 1 page for entry and exit stamps.
• You can apply for an e-Visa online that entitles you to a stay of 90 days within a 180-day period.
• Applications should be made at least 48 hours prior to departure.
• U.S. citizens traveling to Turkey on cruise ships are entitled to a visa-free stay of 72 hours.

United Arab Emirates and Dubai Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will require a passport valid for 6 months beyond your entry date and 1 page required for entry stamp. Those who have a 12-page emergency passport are often denied entry to Dubai.
• If you are exiting by land, you must pay a 35 UAE Dirham departure fee (approximately $10 USD) in local currency only.

What types of visas are available for people to come to the United States?

There are more than 20 nonimmigrant visa types for people traveling to the United States temporarily. There are many more types of immigrant visas for those coming to live permanently in the United States. The type of Visa you need is determined by the purpose of your intended travel. After Visa Issuance

How do i read and understand my visa.

Please use the illustrated guide below to learn how to read your new nonimmigrant visa (for travel to the U.S. as a temporary visitor). In addition, as soon as you receive it, check to make sure information printed on the visa is correct (see below). If any of the information on your visa does not match the information in your passport or is incorrect, please contact the nonimmigrant visa section at the embassy or consulate that issued your visa.

My visa expires in 5 years, what does this mean?

A visa must be valid at the time a traveler seeks admission to the United States, but the expiration date of the visa (validity period/length of time the visa can be used) has no relation to the length of time a temporary visitor may be authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to remain in the United States. Persons holding visas valid for multiple entries may make repeated trips to the United States, for travel for the same purpose, as long as the visa has not expired, and the traveler has done nothing to become ineligible to enter the United States, at port-of-entry.

Visa Validity

My old passport has already expired. my visa to travel to the united states is still valid but in my expired passport. do i need to apply for a new visa with my new passport.

No. If your visa is still valid you can travel to the United States with your two passports, as long as the visa is valid, not damaged, and is the appropriate type of visa required for your principal purpose of travel. (Example: tourist visa, when your principal purpose of travel is tourism). Both passports (the valid and the expired one with the visa) should be from the same country. When you arrive at the U.S. port-of-entry (POE, generally an airport or land border) the Customs and Border Protection Immigration Officer will check your visa in the old passport and if s/he decides to admit you into the United States they will stamp your new passport with an admission stamp along with the annotation "VIOPP" (visa in other passport). Do not try to remove the visa from your old passport and stick it into the new valid passport. If you do so, your visa will no longer be valid.

My visa will expire while I am in the United States. Is there a problem with that?

No. If the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection Immigration Officer at the port-of-entry admitted you into the United States for a specific period of time, s/he will note your authorized period of stay on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94, called an Arrival/Departure Record. You will be able to remain in the United States during your authorized period of stay, even if your visa expires during the time you are in the United States. Since your admission stamp or paper Form I-94 documents your authorized stay and is the official record of your permission to be in the United States, it is very important to keep inside your passport.

What are indefinite validity visas (Burroughs visas) and are they still valid?

Indefinite validity visas (Burroughs Visas) are tourist/business visas manually stamped into a traveler’s passport which were valid for ten years. Effective April 1, 2004, all indefinite validity Burroughs visas became void. Therefore, if you have an indefinite validity visa you must apply for a new visa for travel to the U.S.

I changed my name. Is my U.S. visa with my old name still valid?

If your name has legally changed through marriage, divorce, or a court ordered name change, you will need to obtain a new passport.  Once you have a new passport, the Department of State recommends that you apply for a new U.S. visa to make it easier for you to travel to and from the United States.

Administrative Processing

What is administrative processing.

Some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case.  Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later. Visa Refusals

My visa application has been refused. why can't i get my money back.

The fee that you paid is an application fee. Everyone who applies for a U.S. visa anywhere in the world must pay this fee, which covers the cost of processing your application. This fee is non-refundable regardless of whether you are issued a visa or not, since your application was processed to conclusion. As one example, if your application was refused under Section 214(b) and you choose to reapply for a visa, whether applying at the same embassy or elsewhere, you will be required to pay the visa application processing fee. I have a nonimmigrant visa that will expire soon and I would like to renew it. Do I need go through the whole visa application process again?

Yes, you will have to go through the whole visa application process each time you want to apply for a visa, even if your visa is still valid. There are some situations where a visa applicant may not need to be interviewed when renewing his/her visa. See the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website for more information.

Entering and Departing the United States

After i have my visa, i will be able to enter the u.s., correct.

A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to the U.S. port-of-entry, and the Department of Homeland Security U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) immigration inspector authorizes or denies admission to the United States. How can I find out how long I am authorized to stay in the United States?

A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States, but allows a foreign citizen coming from abroad, to travel to the United States port-of entry (generally an airport or land border) and request permission to enter the United States. The Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States, and determine how long a traveler may stay. At the port of entry, upon granting entry to the United States, the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. immigration inspector, provides you an admission stamp or paper  Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record  in your passport. On this admission stamp or paper form, the U.S. immigration inspector records either a date or "D/S" (duration of status). If your I-94 contains a specific date, then that is the date by which you must leave the United States. Your admission stamp or paper Form I-94 is very important to keep in your passport, since it shows your permission to be in the United States. Review information about  Admission  on the CBP Website. Lost, Stolen or Damaged Visas

My passport with my visa was stolen, what should i do.

If your passport with your admission stamp or paper Form I-94 are lost or stolen, you must get them replaced immediately. There are a number of steps you need to take, learn more, see  Lost and Stolen Passports, Visas, and Form I-94s .

My visa was damaged. What should I do?

If your visa has been damaged in any way, you will need to reapply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. 

U.S. Citizens

I may have a claim to u.s. citizenship. can i apply for a u.s. visa.

With few exceptions, a person born in the United States acquires U.S. citizenship at birth. A state-issued birth certificate serves as evidence of citizenship. Review the  Apply for a Passport  webpage to learn more.

Persons born in countries other than the United States may have a claim to U.S. citizenship if either parent is a U.S. citizen under U.S. law. Learn more on the  Birth of U.S. Citizens Abroad  webpage.

If a person is a U.S. citizen, he or she is not eligible for a visa.  Any prospective applicant believing he or she may have a claim to U.S. citizenship should have his or her citizenship claim adjudicated (officially determined) by a consular officer at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate before applying for a U.S. visa.  

I have dual citizenship. Which passport should I use to travel to the United States?

All U.S. citizens, even dual citizens/nationals, must enter and depart the United States using his/her U.S. passport.

Can i get a visitor visa for birth tourism.

Birth tourism (travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for a child) is not a permissible basis for issuance of a visitor visa.  For more information, please click here

How do I know whether to contact the Department of State or Department of Homeland Security about my issue?

Contact the Department of State,  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  abroad with questions about U.S. visas, including application, the status of visa processing, and for inquiries relating to visa denial. Once in the United States, the traveler falls under the authority (jurisdiction) of Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security,  U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)  is responsible for the approval of all petitions, the authorization of permission to work in the United States, the issuance of extensions of stay, and change or adjustment of an applicant's status while the applicant is in the United States.

I would like to know if my friend has applied for a visa and what the status is. Who should I contact?

Your friend, the visa applicant. Under U.S. law, specifically the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) 222(f), visa records are confidential. Therefore, the visa applicant should inquire at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad where he/she applied regarding necessary information about visa application status. Because of confidentiality of visa records, you’ll need to ask your friend, the visa applicant your questions about whether a visa application was made, or a visa was issued or denied.

Explanation of Numerical Limitations on Immigrant Visa Issuance

Immigrant visa processing is governed by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of 1952, as amended, which controls priority dates and the number of immigrant visas that can be issued under certain preference categories. To establish which petitions are eligible for visas, the Department of State issues a monthly publication called the Visa Bulletin.

The Visa Bulletin provides a list of cut-off dates that are used to ensure the number of immigrant visas issued each year does not exceed the legal limit established in the INA. Cut-off dates are categorized by foreign state of chargeability and preference category. Only a petition with a priority date that is earlier than the cut-off date is eligible for a visa and consular processing. Please note this petition's priority date, foreign state of chargeability, and preference category can be found at the end of this correspondence. 

The NVC may begin processing this petition prior to a visa number becoming available per the current edition of the Visa Bulletin. This allows ample time for the petitioner and applicant(s) to obtain and submit all required fees, forms, and documents. This petition, however, will not be eligible for an immigrant visa interview until its priority date is earlier than the cut-off date established in the current edition of the Visa Bulletin.

Planning a trip to Europe? New ETIAS rules affect travelers in 2025

If you're planning a romantic trip to Paris or want to see your favorite Premier League club play in England, you'll need to know about some new rules before traveling to Europe.

Starting in the first quarter of 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System requires all U.S. citizens to register with ETIAS prior to traveling to European countries.

What is ETIAS?

As per the European Union , the ETIAS travel authorization is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers visiting any of the 30 European countries. It is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and remains valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever occurs first. If you obtain a new passport, you must apply for a new ETIAS authorization.

Why is the European Union requiring this?

The requirements for entering Europe are changing primarily for security, migration management, and border control reasons. The European Union is introducing the ETIAS to better monitor travelers from visa-exempt countries. Here are some key reasons for the change:

• Enhanced security : ETIAS is designed to strengthen the EU's security by screening travelers before they enter and identifying potential risks such as terrorism, organized crime, or illegal immigration.
• Improved border control : By requiring pre-travel authorization, the EU aims to improve border management and streamline the entry process for travelers, reducing delays at border checkpoints.
• Migration management : The system will help EU countries better manage migration flows by collecting information on travelers from visa-exempt countries before they arrive.
• Alignment with global trends : Similar systems, like the U.S. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), are already in place in other regions. The EU is adopting ETIAS to stay aligned with global best practices for border security.
• Digital transformation : The move towards digital travel authorization simplifies the process for travelers and authorities alike, creating a more efficient system for handling international arrivals.

What European Countries will require ETIAS?

The new travel authorization is required for anyone entering a member country of Europe’s Schengen area. This currently includes 23 EU member states, six non-EU countries, and three European microstates, covering a total of 32 countries and territories.

The following is a list of countries that require U.S. citizens and those not from Europe to register for ETIAS:

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• Switzerland
• Vatican City

Once the ETIAS is implemented, U.S. citizens and travelers from 60 other countries will need an ETIAS visa waiver for short stays in any Schengen country. This list of eligible countries includes Canada, Mexico, Australia, and many others. ETIAS approval will be required for all travelers, regardless of age, to visit the European Schengen countries.

How do you apply for ETIAS? How much does ETIAS cost?

To apply, you’ll need a valid U.S. passport, an email address, and a debit or credit card to pay the nonrefundable €7 ($7.79) application fee, which applies to individuals between the ages of 18 and 70. Family members of EU citizens and those under 18 or over 70 still need an ETIAS but will not be charged.

How long is the ETIAS process?

According to the EITAS website, some ETIAS applications are processed within four days. Delays could occur due to additional information or interviews, extending the processing time to 30 days. You are advised to apply in advance.

How long can you visit with ETIAS?

According to the EU , the ETIAS allows for multiple short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in the Schengen area. This also includes stays of up to one week.

ETIAS is not a visa but an entry requirement, and it is valid for short-term tourism, business, medical, or transit purposes.

If you plan to study in a European country requiring ETIAS for more than 90 days, you will need to obtain a student visa. For shorter study programs, you can apply for ETIAS travel authorization. For more information, please contact the consulate of the country where you intend to study.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Visa-Free Visitors

Thailand is gearing up to implement an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visitors from visa-free countries, following in the footsteps of international systems like the USA’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), and the proposed European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), set to come into effect in 2025.

The system will allow authorities to pre-screen visa-exempt travelers before they arrive.

The purpose of this move is to improve the monitoring and screening of foreign nationals entering Thailand, while ensuring the nation’s safety and security.

The system aims to improve border control, identify potential security risks, and facilitate smoother travel into Thailand.

Key Details of Thailand’s ETA

Who will be affected.

The ETA will be applicable to nationals of 93 countries that currently enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand. This includes travelers from Australia, New Zealand, China, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The ETA will be compulsory for visa exempt foreign nationals each time prior to entering Thailand by air, land, or sea.

Diplomats are exempt from the ETA. There is currently no exemption for any other group.

Timeline of Implementation

The ETA system is scheduled to begin its pilot phase in December 2024, with full implementation planned for June 2025. However, it is likely that this deadline will be delayed.

The successful launch of such systems typically depends on seamless integration with a variety of third-party platforms, including airlines, travel agencies, and government agencies. This can lead to unforeseen technical or logistical challenges. For instance, Europe's ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) faced similar setbacks and has already been postponed once.

How It Works

Applications for the ETA will be made online through Thailand’s official e-Visa platform .

Unlike some countries where similar programs allow for multiple entries over a period of time, Thailand’s ETA will require approval for each individual trip. However, apparently travelers will benefit from expedited entry through automated passport gates once their ETA is approved.

Once approved, applicants will receive an ETA authorization via email, which includes a QR code granting access through electronic immigration gates.

The system will automatically verify passport authenticity, check for any criminal history or disruptive behavior in Thailand, and scan relevant Interpol notices. These checks are identical to those conducted by immigration officers at airports and border crossings, but the ETA process eliminates delays and potential disputes, streamlining entry.

Though complete details regarding the process are still forthcoming, the ETA is expected to be free of charge, offering convenience without additional costs.

Requirements

While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to release the full details, requirements are likely to include the basics such as proof of accommodation and onward travel.

While the ETA seems like more unnecessary red tape, such schemes are becoming more common, as global security and surveillance is stepped up. Indeed, a similar system is already in place in Malaysia and, to some extent, Cambodia.

Entry Restrictions

It is unknown whether the system will impose limits on the number of 60-day entries allowed in a given year. Until July, Thai immigration restricted visa-free entries to two border trips per year, a rule that has since been lifted. However, the ETA could reintroduce such restrictions, with the system issuing computerized rejections rather than being rejected or told that this is your last entry when you arrive.

Thailand’s Expanding Visa Policies

The launch of the ETA is just one component of Thailand’s evolving visa landscape. The government has been actively updating visa regulations to accommodate a wider range of travelers, including professionals, digital nomads, and freelancers.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of the five-year “ Destination Thailand Visa” (DTV) . This visa, aimed at remote workers and digital nomads, allows multiple entries over five years with stays of up to 180 days per visit, catering to the needs of the modern workforce.

Extended Visa-Free Stays

In addition to the ETA, Thailand has extended visa-free stays from 30 to 60 days, with the option to apply for a further 30-day extension. The visa exemption and visa-on-arrival lists have also been expanded, simplifying travel for more nationalities.
