How to use Adaptive Cruise Control on VW Tiguan

Adaptive Cruise Control on Volkswagen Tiguan helps maintain an individually stored constant speed between about 20 miles per hour and 95 miles per hour at a previously set distance in time intervals between your vehicle and those in front of you.

To switch on adaptive cruise control, press the on/off button on your steering wheel, the system is now active but no speed is set. To save the current speed when the vehicle is moving, press the SET button.

The set speed appears in the instrument cluster and the adaptive cruise control system begins regulating the speed to help automatically maintain a comfortable following distance to a vehicle in front.

Adjusting distance / gap

The adaptive cruise control system helps maintain the following distance by determining a time interval, resulting in a speed dependent distance. When adaptive cruise control is active, the following distance to the vehicle in front can be adjusted to one of five positions by pressing the adaptive distance button on the steering wheel.

The distance intervals can also be set using the plus or minus buttons immediately after pressing the adaptive distance button.

When a slower moving vehicle directly ahead is detected, adaptive cruise control automatically slows down and helps maintain the distance that has been set. Once the slower vehicle moves out of the way, the system adjusts back to the set speed.

Stop and Go

If the vehicle traveling ahead brakes to a standstill, adaptive cruise control will also brake your vehicle to a standstill. The driver assist system holds your vehicle stationary with the brakes and adaptive cruise control staying active. To drive off after being stationary briefly, press the accelerator, adaptive cruise control will resume speed regulation as long as the vehicle in front is moving again.

Deactivate and resume ACC

To deactivate cruise briefly press the cruise on/off button on the steering wheel, or press the brake pedal. To resume the previously set speed, press the resume button RES .

To increase the speed by one mile per hour, briefly press the plus button or press and hold to increase the set speed in increments of five miles per hour. Press the minus button briefly to reduce speed by one mile per hour, or press and hold to reduce the set speed in increments of five miles per hour.

In addition to the functions of a traditional cruise control system, adaptive cruise control can help speed up or slow down your car to keep a comfortable following distance to the car ahead.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Owners Manual - Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Adaptive cruise control (acc),  introduction.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) maintains your selected speed. When the vehicle approaches a vehicle driving ahead, the ACC adjusts the speed automatically and maintains your set distance to the vehicle driving ahead.

Does this vehicle have ACC?

The vehicle has ACC if you can adjust ACC settings in the Assistance systems menu in the Infotainment system.

Speed range

You can set a speed between approx. 20 mph (approx. 30 km/h) and approx. 130 mph (approx. 210 km/h). The maximum speed that you can set may be lower, depending on the vehicle equipment and country.

Driving with ACC

You can override the ACC system at any time. Adaptive Cruise Control is canceled when you apply the brakes. When you accelerate, Adaptive Cruise Control is paused while accelerating and then resumed.

Driver intervention request

Radar sensor.

ACC detects driving situations using a radar sensor in the front of the vehicle. The radar sensor has a range of up to approx. 120 m (approx. 400 ft).

The intelligent technology of the ACC cannot overcome the natural laws of physics and can operate only within the limits of the system. Never allow the increased convenience to tempt you into taking risks. Careless or unintended use of the ACC system can cause accidents and serious injuries. The system cannot replace the driver's attention.

Always adapt your speed and distance to vehicles driving ahead based on the visual, weather, road, and traffic conditions.

Never use ACC when visibility is poor or when roads are steep, winding, flooded, or slippery, for example due to snow, ice, moisture, or gravel.

Never use ACC when driving off-road or on unpaved roads. ACC is only designed for use on paved roads.

Take over steering immediately if a driver intervention prompt appears in the instrument cluster display or the deceleration by ACC is not sufficient.

Apply the brakes if the vehicle continues to roll unintentionally, e.g. after a driver intervention prompt.

Always be ready to resume control of the vehicle speed.

Special driving situations

Stop-and-go traffic

ACC can brake vehicles with automatic transmissions to a stop and hold them stationary. ACC remains active, and the instrument cluster display shows ACC is ready for a few seconds. During this time, the vehicle will automatically resume driving once the vehicle driving ahead starts to move (depending on the equipment and not available in all countries).

Extend drive-readiness or reactivate:

Driving off when drive-readiness has ended and the vehicle driving ahead has already started moving:

Or: Briefly press the accelerator pedal.

The ACC does not stay active in the following scenarios:

The stationary phase lasts several minutes.

A vehicle door is opened.

The ignition is switched off.

If ACC is ready appears in the instrument cluster display and the vehicle driving ahead starts to move, your vehicle will start driving automatically. The vehicle may not be able to detect obstacles in the vehicle's path when this happens. This may cause accidents and serious injuries.

Check the vehicle's path every time before you start driving and brake the vehicle if necessary.

ACC limitations

When should i not use acc.

When driving in heavy rain, snow, or spray

When driving through construction zones, tunnels or toll stations.

When driving on winding roads, for example, mountain roads

When driving off-road

When driving in parking ramps

When driving on roads with embedded metal objects, such as railroad tracks

When driving on gravel roads

Following a violent impact affecting components within the range of the radar sensor, e.g. following a rear-end collision.

If you use the ACC in the situations mentioned, accidents and serious injuries may result and legal regulations may be violated.

Delayed reaction

Unrecognizable objects.

ACC only detects vehicles that are moving in the same direction. The following will not be detected:

Pedestrians

Stationary vehicles

Vehicles crossing the street or oncoming vehicles

Other stationary obstacles

If, for example, a vehicle detected by the ACC turns or changes lanes and there is a stationary vehicle in front of this vehicle, the ACC will not react to the stationary vehicle  fig. 110.

The radar sensor only measures straight ahead. Therefore, on tight curves, vehicles may be detected by mistake or vehicles driving ahead may not be detected  fig. 111.

Vehicles outside the sensor range

The ACC may not react, may react with a delay, or may react in a way that is not desired in the following situations:

If there are vehicles that are driving close to your vehicle but outside the sensor range, such as motorcycles  fig. 112.

If vehicles change to your lane close in front of your vehicle  fig. 113.

If vehicles have objects or accessories projecting out of the vehicle.

Switching ACC on and off

Switching on

ACC is not yet functioning.

Starting the Cruise Control System

ACC saves the current speed and maintains the set distance. If the current speed is outside the specified speed range, the ACC adjusts the minimum speed when driving too slowly or the maximum speed when driving too quickly.

In addition, the anti-slip regulation (ASR) is activated and ESC Sport is deactivated.

The following indicator lights may turn on depending on the driving situation and the instrument cluster version:

If ACC is not regulating the speed, the indicator lights do not come on or are grey.

Canceling Adaptive Cruise Control

Or: Press the brake pedal.

The relevant indicator light for the driving situation comes on and the speed and distance are saved.

If the anti-slip regulation (ASR) is deactivated, then the Adaptive Cruise Control is automatically stopped.

Resuming the Cruise Control System

ACC assumes the last set speed and the last set distance. The instrument cluster display shows the set speed, and indicator lights turn on corresponding to the driving situation.

Switching off

The set speed is deleted.

Adjusting the ACC settings

You can set the distance at five levels from very short to very long:

In the Assistance systems menu of the Infotainment system, you can choose whether you want the regulation to start at the distance that was set at the end of the journey or start at a preselected distance.

If ACC is not regulating, the set distance and the vehicle will not be highlighted on the instrument cluster display.

Setting the speed

You can adjust the stored speed within the specified speed range using the buttons on the multi-function steering wheel as follows:

Steering wheel version 2: Alternatively, swipe the button from the bottom to the top.

Steering wheel version 2: Alternatively, swipe the button from the top to the bottom.

To change the stored speed continuously, press and hold the respective button.

If the vehicle is less than the minimum distance from the vehicle ahead and the difference in speed between the vehicle ahead and your own vehicle is so great that the speed deceleration from the ACC is not sufficient, there is a risk of a rear end collision. The braking distance also increases during rainfall and winter road conditions.

ACC may not be able to detect all driving situations correctly.

Always be ready to apply the brakes yourself.

If you press the accelerator pedal, you will override the speed and distance control. In this case, ACC will not brake automatically.

Heed the country-specific regulations regarding minimum distance.

Always set a longer distance when there is rain, snow, or poor visibility.

Adjusting the Adaptive Cruise Control system settings

You can influence how the ACC reacts in a sporty driving style:

​Vehicles with Driving Mode Selection:

Select the desired driving mode ⇒ Driving Mode Selection.

​Vehicles without Driving Mode Selection:

Select the desired driving mode in the Assistance systems menu in the Infotainment system.

Deactivating Adaptive Cruise Control

Select the speed regulation in the instrument cluster display.

Adaptive Cruise Control is deactivated. The vehicle only maintains the set speed.

Troubleshooting

 acc is not available.

The yellow indicator light turns on.

The radar sensor is dirty. Clean the radar sensor ⇒ Vehicle care.

The visibility of the radar sensor is limited due to weather conditions, such as snow, or from soap residue or coatings. Clean the radar sensor ⇒ Vehicle care.

Radar sensor visibility is limited by attachments, decorative frames on license plate holders, or stickers. Clear the area around the radar sensor.

The radar sensor is misaligned or damaged, for example as a result of damage to the front of the vehicle. Check if there is noticeable damage ⇒ Repairs and technical modifications.

Malfunction or fault. Stop the engine and restart.

Painting work was carried out on or structural modifications were made to the front of the vehicle.

The original Volkswagen emblem is not used. Volkswagen recommends the use of Volkswagen original parts or Volkswagen original accessories, which you can acquire from an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.

ACC is not functioning as expected

Make sure the following requirements are met:

Vehicles with manual transmission: A forward gear other than first gear is engaged and the vehicle speed is at least 16 mph (25 km/h).

Vehicles with an automatic transmission: A gear is engaged for driving forward.

The brake lights on the vehicle are functioning.

ESC is not regulating.

The brake pedal is not being pressed.

Unusual noises during automatic braking

This is normal and not a cause for concern.

What is Adaptive Cruise Control?

• ACC will cause your car to slow down to maintain the predetermined distance when the car in front of you does. If necessary, the system can even brake to a complete stop.
• ACC accelerates your car back to the predetermined speed whenever the slower vehicle moves out of the way (or speeds up).
• As long as the car in front of you is also going, all you have to do to restore the ACC settings if ACC totally stops your car is press and release the gas pedal.
• Press the brake pedal or the on/off button on the steering wheel for a brief moment to turn off adaptive cruise control.

How can you set the VW’s cruise control?

Go into Cruise Control mode. On the left side of the multi-function steering wheel, you may find the Cruise Control controls. To start the cruise control, press the button. There will be a speedometer icon in the instrument cluster display.

What about the Volkswagen Jetta’s cruise control?

A cruise control system is included with the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta. Find the left-hand control stalk on the steering wheel and use it. To turn on, press the black lever at the end of the stalk. Increase cruise speeds once the engine is going by adjusting the lever’s upper section.

Volkswagen Cruise Control System: What Is It?

An intelligent advancement of cruise control is adaptive cruise control (ACC). Automatic deactivation

Cruise control speed regulation is automatically deactivated or temporarily interrupted:

Automatically keeps your car moving at a safe, constant speed..

Our cruise control system 1 works electronically to help regulate your car's speed. It reduces the stress on drivers and offers you more comfort on long journeys by keeping the vehicle at a constant speed. It's particularly effective when you have to stay within speed limits for a long way - when driving through miles of roadworks on the motorway, for example - and cuts the risk of your speed creeping up by accident.

The system works by memorising and maintaining the speed you select. It's very flexible, too. You can increase or reduce speed manually - to a defined value - and you also have the option of returning to the speed most recently memorised.

The cruise control system can be turned off simply by pressing a button or by pressing the brake or clutch pedals. For safety reasons, the cruise control system should not be used in heavy traffic or in difficult road conditions, such as heavy rain or ice.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps to avoid accidents by always keeping your car at a safe distance from the traffic ahead.

Working together with the radar-controlled Front Assist traffic monitoring system, our adaptive cruise control system keeps you at a safe distance from the vehicle in front, making driving much easier - whether on motor way journeys or in slow and moving traffic.

As with cruise control, you set the speed at which you want your car to maintain. This is then further enhanced by being equipped with the safe-distance technology using a radar sensor, which modulates your speed based on traffic conditions. The system detects traffic slowing ahead and automatically reduces your speed to match and maintain an appropriate gap to the car in front. If necessary, the system will bring your car to a complete stop.

It does this with the help of the Front Assist system which primes the brakes if it senses a collision is likely, shortening the stopping distance when the driver hits the brake pedal.

How it works

The safe-distance technology 's radar sensor has a range of up to 200 metres and a beam angle of 12 degrees. The radar sensor and control unit are combined into a single unit which is located at the front of the car.

Using the signals from the radar sensor, the control unit computes the distance to the vehicle ahead and your car's speed relative to it. It also works out its lateral position on multi-lane roads. If there are several vehicles within the sensor's field of coverage at the same time, this information is used to select which of the vehicles the system should track. The radar sensor is not capable of detecting stationary obstructions, such as the end of a tailback or crash barriers, however.

If approaching a slower vehicle ahead or if another vehicle cuts in front of you, the adaptive cruise control slows down the car by initiating corrective controls in the engine management and, if necessary, in the braking system too. If the required rate of deceleration exceeds 30% of the vehicle's maximum stopping power, visual and audible warning signals will prompt the driver to apply the brakes manually.

In addition to the above, this updated version of ACC includes:

Road recognition - using information from front and rear cameras and route information, your vehicle will predictively adjust its speed prior to junctions and bends.

Speed Assist - using both the front camera and route information identifies changes in the posted speed limit and automatically adjusts the vehicles speed.
