One day in Whitby Itinerary

What’s the best time to visit Whitby?

The summer months between June and August are the most popular times to visit Whitby, as it’s usually lovely and sunny and you can make the most of the harbour and beach. However, our favourite time to visit Whitby is spring, as the sunsets are just stunning, it’s less busy and it’s still nice and warm to enjoy the beach, walks, and sitting outside at cafes to take in the lovely harbour. You’ll also likely find that accommodation is cheaper outside of the peak summer seasons, which is an added bonus!

Whitby

A few facts about Whitby

  • Smuggling History – Whitby was big in the world of smuggling , as many coastal towns were, with spirits being snuck in and then transported through secret tunnels!
  • Bombed in WWI – Whitby was bombed in WWI, with many people dying or being injured.
  • Whaling Port – Whaling was also a really big industry starting in 1750 and 1840, bringing wealth to certain families in the area. The whalebone arch on top of West Cliff is a reminder of this!
  • Captain Cook – Captain Cook was born near Whitby and even moved to the town for his seaman’s apprenticeship!
  • Dracula Inspiration – Bram Stoker took inspiration from Whitby for Dracula, with various areas of the town being used as settings for his novel. You’ll see plenty of Gothic items sold around Whitby as a result! Stoker also stayed in Whitby whilst writing parts of the novel.
  • The UK’s Best Fish and Chips – Plenty of the fish and chip shops in Whitby have won awards for their offerings, with very fresh fish and high-quality food overall. When you’re visiting, make sure to give them a try!
  • Fossils On The Beach – If you’re willing to have a good dig, you can find fossils around the beach, especially after very heavy rain or storms where they fall down from the cliffs.

One Day In Whitby Itinerary

Welcome to Whitby, a quintessentially English town that will entrance you as soon as you step foot in it. If you don’t know what to do here, just keep on reading to learn all about the main sights and must-dos in the area. You are about to have a perfect day!

Grab some coffee and a great bagel

For the best start to your one day in Whitby, head straight to Mr Cooper’s Coffee House to set you up for the day. There is a wide variety of stunning coffee options, from your classics to matcha lattes, delicious teas, and warming hot chocolate. Plus, we’ve not even gotten onto food yet! Think wonderful fresh bagels filled with unique and delicious combinations, then incredible sweet treats to finish off the start of your day.

Mr Cooper’s Coffee House, Whitby

Head to Whitby Abbey

From the coffee shop, you’re just a short walk from Whitby Abbey , a beautiful historic monastery that overlooks the North Sea on the East Cliff. With such a picturesque backdrop and wonderful architecture, visiting this incredible historic site is very much a must. The abbey was constructed in the 7th century, and its ruins were long used by sailors as a landmark to help them navigate these waters.

Whitby Abbey

You can then head down towards the waterfront and climb the 199 steps, with incredible views from the top. If you’ve read Dracula, it is these very steps the famous vampire traverses in his dog form when he first arrives in England. They aren’t too steep and there are plenty of places to stop on the way up. The view is definitely worth it!

Whitby Abbey

Enjoy the beach

Once you’re done with the Abbey, cross the Esk and head for the beautiful Whitby Beach . It’s very close by, and you can walk down there to see the two Whitby Lighthouses. Enjoy a walk along the seafront and also don’t forget to see the beach huts!

Whitby Beach

This place is ideal for the whole family if you’ve brought them along, with ice cream, donkey rides during summer, fish and chips shops and all sorts of other things. A perfect way to just enjoy a moment a bit and be glad you’ve come to visit this amazing town.

Stop for lunch

When you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s got to be fish and chips for lunch. Cross over the bridge across the River Esk and walk down to Magpie Cafe , one of Whitby’s iconic fish and chip shops.

River Esk, Whitby

They also have a wider menu featuring lots of excellent local seafood, so stopping here is pretty much obligatory. You can either sit in or get takeaway fish and chips, so if you’re visiting during peak time, we’d definitely recommend booking a table.

Megpie Cafe

Visit the Whitby Museum…

If you want to learn a bit more about the history of Whitby, dedicate the afternoon to museum-hopping as there are some great places around. First on the list is the Whitby Museum , a place where you can learn literally everything about the town. From fossils to toys, from model ships to costumes, the museum has loads of Whitby-related items.

Underage people go in for free, and the adults’ ticket is only 7 pounds, so this museum won’t set you back too much, either.

… and Captain Cook Memorial Museum

The next museum on the itinerary should be the Captain Cook Memorial Museum . Yes, it was here in Whitby that James Cook, one of the most famous British explorers, started his naval career, so a museum dedicated to him was a no-brainer for the town, really.

The museum itself contains all sorts of fascinating details from the captain’s voyages, including various sketches and artwork. By learning about Cook’s life, you will be transported back to 18th-century England and gain a complete perspective of what life was like almost 300 years ago.

And if you have time to kill after the museums, head to Abbey Wharf , a relaxed bar with harbour views and lovely cocktails!

Whitby

Hop on an evening cruise

Whitby is a port town, so booking an evening cruise is a great idea. Not only will it give you a whole new perspective of the town, but you will also be able to relax and collect your thoughts after a whole day of sightseeing.

Evening Cruise, Whitby

With a gentle breeze and various seabirds around you, the cruise will be very pleasant indeed. Oh, and if you come during the right time of the year, you might even get to see some whales passing by!

Evening in Whitby

End the day with an amazing dinner

For those of you looking for the perfect way to finish your one day in Whitby, it’s got to be with a meal in Cosa Nostra , a great Italian restaurant. With a great wine list, an authentic interior, fresh ingredients and incredibly delicious food, you can’t go wrong. We particularly love the roasted fig starter, followed by the Linguine Puttanesca or the Proscuitto and Wild Rocket Pizza (why not get both and share!). The kids menu is also great if you’re visiting as a family.

Where To Stay In Whitby

The Belfry Whitby

2 Church Square, North Yorkshire, Whitby, YO21 3EG

One of the best hotels in Whitby is The Belfry , a stunning modern hotel that is just a few minutes walk from the harbour and beach. There are beautiful rooms as well as self-catered apartments which are incredibly cosy. Room prices sit at around £120 a night out of peak season, which may be slightly higher when tourists start coming in.

BOOK A ROOM HERE

The White House Inn

The White House Inn

Upgang lane, Whitby, YO21 3JJ

A more affordable, yet really lovely option, is The White House Inn . A short walk down from the beach and slightly less central than The Belfry, the views are clear and really breathtaking. This is a pub with rooms above, which are spacious and offer great views of Whitby. Prices are closer to £85 a month here, with a wonderful breakfast included!

Saxonville Hotel, Whitby

Saxonville Hotel

Ladysmith Avenue, Whitby, YO21 3HX

Close to the centre of Whitby, Saxonville Hotel is a great choice for your stay here. It’s a family-run place, and you can really see these people try hard to make everyone feel welcome. The breakfast is absolutely fantastic, and the rooms are bright, spacious, and comfortable, with some very pretty furniture giving out that traditional English vibe.

Duke of York, Whitby

Duke of York

124 Church Street, Whitby, YO22 4DE

How about a hotel on the beach? Duke of York is close to Whitby Beach and serves a tasty and filling Full English/Irish breakfast. Each room comes with a coffee machine, plus the guests can enjoy a nice flat-screen TV, too. Everything is well maintained, perfectly clean, and the staff working here is exceptionally kind. In short, it’s a great stay at a unique location.

Day Trips From Whitby

One of the best day trips from Whitby if you have the time is to head to the North York Moors National Park, which is extremely beautiful and tranquil. With lovely hikes, along with festivals, events, and activities regularly going on, this park focuses on helping to recover local nature as well as showcasing how beautiful the area is! It’s just a 7-minute drive from Whitby, so if you don’t have a car with you, it won’t cost much in a taxi. This is a wonderful day and you can always plan some well-deserved fish and chips when you get back!

Extra Tips For Visiting Whitby

In terms of transport, if you’re not able to drive, you can easily get buses or trains to this stunning seaside town. If you’re heading from another place in the UK and want to break up the journey, you could stop off at a shopping centre in Leeds , enjoy a quant day in York , or visit Sheffield overnight if you’ve got a very long journey from down south!

Day Trips from Whitby

Day trips out from whitby.

whitby aerial tuts

If you are going to be doing some travelling around whilst staying at Whitby, you might find the following places worth checking out. Most are seaside locations and a couple are slightly inland from Whitby. They are placed in order of distance from Whitby but with a little planning you should be able to see several of them on the same trip.

Shown, are just a few of the places you can visit, there are plenty more that you’ll find with a bit of web browsing.

Enjoy your stay and your sightseeing.

Don’t forget to keep hold of any Long Stay Parking Tickets/Permits, as these can normally be used again in other long stay carparks in the Scarborough / Whitby areas.

You can buy them in advance from the Tourism Bureau on 01723 383636. Call them for parking advice.

Sandsend beach

Only 2.5 miles from Whitby. A nice walk along Whitby beach or just a 5 minute drive away. Some nice pubs serving good food here. If you’re walking via the road and past Whitby Golf Course instead of the beach, call in to the White House pub at the west end of West Cliff. The views outside are fantastic and it’s a great place to sit and eat overlooking miles of sea as you have a meal or a few drinks.

Robin Hoods Bay

Robin-Hoods-Bay

Just 6 miles from Whitby, it’s also a nice walk along the cliffs, going east. If you don’t want to walk back, walk there, have a few pints, be lazy, and bus back to Whitby. It doesn’t cost much at all.

Runswick Bay

runswick-bay

Runswick Bay, just 9 miles west of Whitby. Once the best place around to gather Winkles if you like to eat them. A beautiful beach, very scenic and just a mile away from Staithes. Runswick bay is down a step hill but it is worth seeing. There is a pub at both the top and bottom of the bank. Carparking both top and bottom too.

Staithes

A very picturesque fishing village, Staithes is only 10 miles west of Whitby. A small selection of pubs and ice cream parlours but well worth a visit

Ravenscar

Ravenscar is 14 miles east of Whitby. There’s not a lot there but it has great views. A nice place to take a picnic and get away from it all. Walk down from the top and take a stroll along the usually uncrowded beach.

Scarborough

Scarborough

Scarborough is 20 miles East of Whitby. There’s a lot going on here as it’s a larger town than Whitby. Plenty of bars, restaurants, shopping, Sea-life Centre, harbour, boat trips etc

cayton-bay

Just 3 miles beyond Scarborough. 23 miles from Whitby. An unspoilt beach area which is worth visiting when you go to Scarborough. If it’s warm enough then you might feel like a swim.

Part of Eden Camp

Eden Camp Museum is near to Malton, a market town which is also worth looking around. Malton is about 28 miles in-land, south of Whitby. At Eden Camp, you can experience the sights, sounds and smells of life on the Home Front and the Front Line, all set in the buildings and grounds of an original World War 2 Prisoner of War Camp. Particularly interesting is the old newspaper Front Pages from every day of WW2. If you know your dates, these are well worth reading or taking a photo of.

The museum trip should easily fill about 3 or 4 hours or so of your day, even more if you are interested in the wars and the past. There is a pub on site and a restaurant too. Well worth visiting and not overpriced by any means.

redcar prom

Redcar is a beach resort 28 miles West of Whitby. If travelling via the coast road to Redcar, you will also pass by Staithes and also Saltburn to get there. Saltburn is another seaside town having a free pier to walk out on and has numerous cafe’s and fish and chip shops.

Redcar is a medium sized town. The beach area here is approximately 8 miles long in total. The beach stretches from Saltburn Cliffs (seen in the distance), past Marske (another seaside town) and through Redcar, all the way to the River Tees which is a further 4 miles away.

Redcar has varied cuisine restaurants, many pubs, reasonable shopping and several free museums. The Oldest lifeboat in the world, built in 1802 and still intact, is located on Redcar Promenade. The ‘Zetland Lifeboat Museum’ is free to visit.  Kirkleatham Museum, also free, is on the outskirts of Redcar town and once again, it is worth visiting with a great kids play area and free parking.

Close by the museum, just 500 metres away is the newly opened Kirkleatham Walled Garden. The garden changes throughout the growing season with everchanging shrubs, fruit trees and many other well kept plants and water features. There is a small cost to visit the garden but special rates for families or OAPs. There is also a decent Cafe on site which doesn’t charge for access only drinks etc. A nice place to sit outside in good weather.

Flamborough

flamborough

Another picturesque area of cliffs and beach. Flamborough is 37 miles from Whitby, beyond Cayton Bay, Scarborough and Filey.

The North Yorkshire Moors

N-Yorks-Moors

When the weather is good, take a drive onto the moors. You’re now going inland, either west or east, it doesn’t matter. Try driving to the Moors Centre at Danby This is about 16 miles from Whitby, on the Moor Road travelling West. Free entry, kids play area and free seating outside for a picnic etc.

Around this area are the villages of Egton,  Lealholm and Ugthorpe. These all have little country pubs to drop in to and are worth planning into your journey. The Carvery on Sunday at the Black Bull in Ugthorpe is very filling and tasty. Book in advance though!

Pickering

Pickering  highstreet

21 miles inland from Whitby. Packed with popular tourist venues, independent shops and markets and beautiful historic and natural attractions. Pickering is a bustling and vibrant market town set at the edge of the majestic North York Moors.

Hopefully the information that we have compiled on this page has given you some idea of what’s around the Whitby area? It doesn’t cover everything but it’s a hint of what’s there and what’s going on, all within an hours drive from Whitby. With a bit of luck it should offer you several suggestions to fill your days and to see what’s on nearby…

Enjoy your travels

Tripadvisor Reviews

Our tour guide, has been taking trips from York for several years. I took my third trip with him, and was not disappointed as I wasn’t before. He is very knowledgeable and very clear in his directions and his expectations of his tourists, and he tries to make a personal connection with each one of us. I would rate him at 10+

Fantastic day trip! It was everything we hoped for. The scenery was stunning. Our tour guide was the kindest man ever and had fantastic knowledge. He kept us safe during a terrible storm and was able to reroute so we could see other sites that were safer at the time. Don’t hesitate to choose this tour

Highly Recommend!

The description of the meet point was clear, easy to find. The driver showed up early and welcomed us into a clean, warm van. He was knowledgeable and personable, sharing interesting details as we drove and on site, and he learned all our names and pointed out things that fit our personal interests throughout. The scenery was stunning. There was plenty of time to wander around and explore at our leisure. We had all the information we needed – where to find sites, restaurants, toilets. The cost was shockingly reasonable, not much (if at all) more than it would have cost us to use public transportation, but without the headache of figuring out schedules and wasted time. Really, it was a perfect day.

17 Mar 2024

Our driver Mark was FANTASTIC! We very much enjoyed out trip and Mark made every attempt to ensure we had good photo opportunities, even when the mist set in on top of the moors, he knew where to go to give us views and a great experience. BOBH Tours will be used by us again, as we intend to make a return visit to York soon. Good social distancing, masks worn by all on the coach, fun bunch too! - tan0508

Wonderful day trip from York

This was our second day trip tour with BOBH. I travelled with my husband and two sons (teen and up). We all had a wonderful time while packing a lot of sights in one day. We never felt rushed and had a lot of time for snack breaks and lunch. Mark is a very safe driver and also, a fantastic guide. One of my sons even remarked on how much he enjoyed Mark's information delivery. He has a wonderful way of delivering just the right amount of history in a very lovely smoothing voice and tone. I highly recommend BOBH for any tours from York! - Betsy S

Excellent day out in North Yorkshire

An excellent day out in the North Yorkshire Moors - amazing scenery which the minibus was able to access via some very narrow moorland roads, a larger coach could not do so. Mark (our driver and tour guide) was extremely pleasant, polite and helpful. His knowledgeable commentary throughout the trip made the journey and visits a pleasurable experience, he was always available to answer questions about the places we passed through/stopped at and on the history/landscape of the area. Helmsley and Whitby are ideal places to visit. The 45 minute stop in picturesque Helmsley is sufficient for a toilet break, tea & cake and a good walk around the village centre. The 2.5 - 3 hour main stop in Whitby provides plenty time for lunch (superb fish & chips) and a sight-seeing walk through the historic fishing town or a short boat trip. The 199 step climb to the ruined abbey and cliff top church is very worthwhile. The short afternoon stop in scenic Goathland is an ideal toilet and refreshment break - it was amazing to encounter friendly sheep wandering freely through the village. The opportunity to see a steam train at Goathland railway station was a bonus. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS EXCURSION - for over 8 hours of guided visiting, the value is exceptional - Martin C

15 Best Things to Do in Whitby, North Yorkshire + Map

Whitby is a jewel of the Yorkshire coastline. Jaw-dropping sceneries, atmospheric ruin, fresh sea breeze, sandy beaches and a vibrant food scene make this town one of the best places to visit in Yorkshire .

Also, this seaside town has hundreds of years of fascinating history. It all started in the 7th century with the founding of Whitby Abbey. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became a bustling hub for shipbuilding and whaling.

It was in this town where Captain James Cook, one of the greatest British explorers, trained in his early years before embarking on his thrilling voyages. Also, his famous ship, HMS Endeavour, was built in the shipyards of Whitby.

The literary connection to the renowned Gothic novel Dracula by Bram Stoker also played a massive role in its modern-day charm. The author visited Whitby in the late 19th century and was inspired by the eerie abbey and the rugged cliffs.

Also, this bustling town is one of the best day trip destinations from York . It is just an hour’s car ride from there. So, if you are visiting York or planning a road trip around Yorkshire, add this charming town to your travel itinerary.

Best Things to Do in Whitby, Yorkshire

1. climb the 199 steps for breathtaking views.

No visit to Whitby is complete without climbing up the iconic 199 Steps to soak in the awe-inspiring view of the North Sea and the town skyline. The stairs lead to St. Mary’s Church graveyard from the old town.

The history of 199 Steps dates back to the 14th century. They were originally made of wood and used by the pilgrims visiting St. Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey.

Over the years, there is often debate about the number of steps. As you ascend, it is fun to count the number of steps.

Locals used to carry the coffins up the church graveyard through this steep path. A few coffin benches were installed to help them rest the coffins. You can still find them along the steps.

2. Explore the Captivating Ruins of Whitby Abbey

Standing proudly over a towering headland, Whitby Abbey has dominated the skyline of this seaside town for centuries. Today, it is managed by the English Heritage and is one of the best tourist attractions of Yorkshire .

The haunting ruins of the abbey and the dramatic surroundings have inspired several writers. It served as an inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel Dracula.

The history of Whitby Abbey can be traced back to 657 AD. Saint Hilda was the first abbess, and it became an important religious centre of the country. After facing significant destruction during the Viking invasions, it was re-founded in the 11th century.

Meander around the atmospheric ruins. Admire the soaring arches and the beautiful stonework.

Also, visit the museum to learn about the historical significance of the abbey. The museum houses several carved stones and religious relics discovered during archaeological excavations.

Tickets: Adults £12.50 and child £7.50 (online).

3. Soak up the Sun on the Town Beaches

This town has two lovely sandy beaches. Whitby West Cliff Beach is the most popular one. Grassy slopes and the towering cliffs provide stunning views of the coast. On hot summer days, you can swim and paddle here. Kids can build sandcastles or try rock pooling.

You will also love a peaceful stroll along the beachside path. Keen walkers can continue the walk to Sandsend Beach.

You will spot various cafes and pop-up ice cream shops here. On the shore stands the beautiful Whitby Pavilion, which hosts many live performances all year round.

Another beach in this vibrant town is the small and sheltered Tate Hill Beach. Tucked beneath the imposing East Cliffs, this one is much quieter than the West Cliff Beach.

4. Experience a Scenic Train Ride on the North York Moors Railway

What better way to admire the dreamy moorlands of North York Moors National Park than a vintage steam train ride through the stunning landscapes?

The North York Moors Railway runs between Whitby and Pickering, and the train journey lasts around two hours. Trains typically run between late March and early November, with special holiday services. They operate both steam and diesel trains.

The railway line originally opened in 1836 as the Whitby and Pickering Railway. However, a few sections of this route were closed until 1973, when it reopened as a heritage railway.

Grosmont, Goathland, Levisham and Pickering are some of the popular stations along the journey. You can buy an all-day ticket and explore these villages. Goathland Station has appeared as Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter movies.

5. Discover the Maritime History of Captain Cook Memorial Museum

This town is famous for its connection with world-renowned explorer Captain James Cook.

Tucked away in Grape Lane, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum offers a fascinating insight into the life and legacy of Captain Cook. While living in Whitby in the 18th century, he stayed in this house as an apprentice.

Set over three floors, this museum showcases original letters, paintings, maps, navigational instruments, and ship models. History buffs would love to learn the thrilling tales of the voyages of Captain Cook and his crew members. Plus, you will get to know a great deal about the history of this house and the maritime significance of Whitby’s.

Meander around the reconstructed old kitchen. Also, check out the attic where the apprentices used to live.

Tickets: Adults £9.

6. Explore the Enchanting Robin Hood’s Bay

Located only six miles from this coastal town, the quintessentially pretty Robin Hood’s Bay is one of the best places to visit near Whitby.

Stroll around the maze of steep cobbled streets lined with charming white-washed cottages and admire the beautiful floral displays, particularly in summer. Enjoy a leisurely stroll on Robin Hood’s Bay Beach. Young visitors can go fossil hunting or rock pooling here. Pay a visit to the nearby museum to learn about the notorious smuggling past of this village.

Also, you can follow the coastal path for some breathtaking vistas over the village and surrounding landscape. Pop inside the Bay Hotel for some delicious fish and chips or a pint, perhaps.

7. Fill your belly with Delicious Seafood on the Magpie Cafe

From traditional chippies to trendy cafes – there are plenty of great places to eat in this bustling town.

Located right on the busy Pier Road, the Magpie Cafe is our favourite one. During our trip to Whitby, we visited this restaurant a couple of times. This legendary institution is well-known for its mouth-watering fresh, locally sourced seafood. Don’t be surprised if there’s a queue outside – we had to wait around half an hour.

Their menu is extensive. The obvious choice is their famous fish and chips, which are cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed their crab salad and seafood platter. And don’t forget about dessert! We loved their sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie.

Seafood lovers can also check out Trenchers at New Quay Road and Abbey Wharf at Market Place. Pop inside Humble Pie and Mash at Church Street to sample some traditional British food.

8. Take in the Majestic Views from the Whalebone Arch

Perched on the top of West Cliff overlooking the harbour, the beautiful Whalebone Arch is a reminder of Whitby’s once-thriving whaling industry. The first arch was erected in 1853, but it decayed over the years. The structure you see today was constructed in 2003 and was a gift from Alaska.

The iconic Whalebone Arch is a popular spot for photographers. The arch perfectly frames the nearby Whitby Abbey and the picturesque seaside cottages of the East Cliff. Sit back and enjoy the stunning panoramic views from here.

Also, look out for the adjacent Captain Cook Memorial, a bronze statue of the local legend. It commemorates the people who built the famous ships Captain Cook used in his voyages.

9. Enjoy Romantic Strolls on Whitby Harbour and Piers

For centuries, Whitby Harbour played a pivotal role in this town’s thriving maritime heritage. Its sheltered location at the mouth of the River Esk made it a safe haven for ships from the North Sea.

Ramble along the bustling Pier Road. The street is lined with numerous coffee shops, chippies, and traditional pubs. You can sit back and enjoy watching the fishing and leisure boats leaving the harbour. Also, look out for the lovely sculptures of some of the beloved figures from Whitby’s past.

Wander around the West Pier and the East Pier. Stretched out to the North Sea, they guard the entrance to the harbour. The West Pier is the longest and provides stunning views of the coastline and the abbey. At the far end of the West Pier stands a picturesque lighthouse.

10. Walk Along the Sandy Beach of Sandsend

If Whitby gets too crowded for you, plan a short visit to the nearby Sandsend. The main highlight of this hamlet is the beautiful golden sandy beach, which stretches for around three miles.

Depending on the weather conditions, you can sunbathe and swim here. When the tides are right, it is a popular spot for surfers and bodyboarders. Also, this area has rich marine life. At low tide, you will spot various rock pools along the beach. Look out for fossils as well. Lastly, don’t forget to stroll around the village and admire the picturesque traditional stone cottages.

From Whitby, you can catch a local bus to Sandsend or walk along the beachside path. The bus journey takes only 9 minutes.

11. Explore the Beautiful St Mary’s Church

Sitting atop the East Cliff, St Mary’s Church is an important historical landmark of Whitby. The famous 199 Steps will take you to this beautiful church from the town centre.

It was founded in the early 12th century. The church building is surrounded by a large graveyard. Many of the gravestones here belong to sailors, ship captains, and members of local families. Arctic explorer William Scoresby is buried here. Captain James Cook used to come to this beautiful church to pray.

Ramble along the path that goes around the cliff. From there, you will get an uninterrupted view of River Esk, the town rooftops and the coast. Also, there are several benches here to rest and admire the view.

12. Take a Relaxing Boat Tour on the North Sea

From Whitby Harbour, take a boat tour to admire the stunning coastal sceneries of North Yorkshire . Also, you will get a unique perspective of the town and its famous landmarks.

Whitby Coastal Cruises is one of the most popular boat tour operators in the town. They offer sea trips, harbour tours, sunset and twilight cruises. Wildlife enthusiasts can take whale-watching trips. If you are lucky, you might spot some minke whales, dolphins, porpoises, and seals as well.

For some fun experience, hop on board The Bark Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook’s famous ship, the HMS Endeavour. This vessel takes passengers on a scenic tour around the North Sea.

13. Explore the Past of Whitby Lifeboat Museum

Located on the west side of River Esk, this small museum tells the thrilling tales of the brave lifeboat crews who have risked their lives to rescue sailors and vessels along Yorkshire’s rugged coastline.

The museum is housed inside a former RNLI boathouse. While here, you will find various fascinating exhibits and historic artefacts showcasing the lifeboat history of Whitby. Some of the highlights of the museum’s collection include the Robert and Ellen Robson Lifeboat and various models and detailed replicas of other lifeboats.

Also, you will find rescue equipment, crew uniforms, and personal memorabilia of the lifeboat crews gathered over the centuries. It is indeed an intriguing place to visit.

14. Stroll Around the Tranquil Gardens of Pannett Park

Located close to the train station, Pannett Park is a beautifully maintained public park. It is also home to the Whitby Museum and the Pannett Art Gallery.

Established in 1902 by a local philanthropist, Robert Elliott Pannett, it is a cherished green space. Admire the stunning floral displays and feed the squirrels. You can walk around the woodland path. Also, you will get a slightly elevated view of the town. Plus, they have a play area for kids to enjoy.

While you have to pay an admission fee for the museum, entry to the art gallery is completely free. The gallery’s permanent collection includes paintings by notable local artists, including the Staithes Group of Artists and the Weatherill Collection.

15. Explore the Whitby Museum

Located in the beautiful Pannett Park, the Whitby Museum showcases the town’s rich history and geology. From ancient Ammonoid fossils to hand-carved jet jewellery – this museum is home to over 90,000 artefacts.

One of the most famous exhibits here is a full-sized skeleton of an ichthyosaurs. It dates from the Jurassic period and was found near this town.

Wander around the exhibits to find an array of artefacts from social and natural history. They also have a great collection of paintings and photographs capturing the beauty of Whitby. Also, learn the riveting tales of the gruesome Hand of Glory, a preserved hand said to have belonged to a hanged criminal.

Plus, they house various artefacts and exhibits related to the life and voyages of Captain Cook.

Tickets: Adults £8.

Where to Go After Visiting Whitby

From charming fishing villages to scenic moorlands, there are plenty of places to discover near Whitby. If you can manage a few extra days, we suggest adding some of these beautiful places to your travel itinerary.

We have already mentioned about Robin Hood’s Bay. If you love exploring cute coastal villages, visit Staithes. Once home to Captain Cook, Staithes is a quaint village filled with old fishermen’s cottages. Also, plan a brief stop at the nearby Runswick Bay.

Goathland is another must-visit place near Whitby. It is famous for being the filming location of the TV show Heartbeat and the Harry Potter films. You can enjoy a peaceful nature walk to the nearby Mallyan Spout Waterfall.

Beach lovers will love a trip to Scarborough and Filey. If you have time, we would highly recommend visiting the stunning Flamborough, a great place for wildlife spotting.

How to Reach Whitby

By Car: Driving to Whitby offers you flexibility and the chance to enjoy the scenic countryside of Yorkshire along the way. This town is well-connected by road. The routes can be winding at places depending on where you are coming from.

This town gets quite busy, especially during peak tourist seasons and finding a parking spot can often be stressful. Church Street car park, Marina Back car park and Cliff Street car park are within walking distance from the town centre.

By Bus: Whitby is well-connected by local bus services from the nearby towns and cities of Yorkshire.

If you are coming from York, catch Coastliner 840. The bus ride takes about two and a half hours. From Scarborough, Arriva Bus Service X93/X94 runs frequently throughout the day. The journey takes approximately an hour.

By Train: Train services are relatively infrequent from Whitby Station. It is mainly served by Northern trains, which connect Middlesborough and Hexham. Trains from Middlesbrough usually take an hour and a half and travel through the North York Moors.

We hope this travel guide of Whitby has helped you plan your next holiday to this scenic town.

Top-Rated Tours Based in York

Absolutely amazing journey I’d do again! Informative, exciting, and wonderful! Chris, our guide/driver did a fantastic job!

This was a wonderful tour. Chris was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the sites. It was a small group, and being picked up and dropped off at our hotel was so convenient; so it was like having your own personal tour guide. There are dramatic landscapes and poignant moments in historic churches and ruins. There were enough stops along the way, and enough time in Whitby to do your own thing. I would highly recommend this tour! KL

This was the most amazing day ever! We were all All Creatures Great and Small fans so it made for a great day seeing all the sites. Chris was so accommodating! This tour is worth every penny to be able to focus on what you really want to see! I would do it again if I come back to York!

I can’t say enough about this tour. It was absolutely fantastic. I honestly can say I have never had a better tour guide. Chris literally drives you through his home and provides a wonderful balance of history and lore as he takes you along back roads that lead to areas only he knows about. He even added an extra piece to the end of the tour, which he could have secretly skipped. He is also very personable, talking about home life growing up in the area. The tour itself was fantastic and it was brought to exceptional life with the help of our tour guide. This is a must for those who want to experience the history and culture of Yorkshire.

Robin Hood's Bay Cleveland Way

If you enjoy this article, please consider sharing it with your friends.

Planning the perfect coastal walk in whitby offers the chance to experience stunning views, fresh sea air, and a taste of history..

Whether you’re a seasoned walker or just looking to stretch your legs, here’s how to plan the perfect coastal walk in Whitby.

Choose the correct route for you

Whitby’s coastal paths offer a variety of routes, each with its unique charm. Start with a short stroll along the Whitby to Sandsend path , a 3-mile walk perfect for beginners. The route is mostly flat and follows the coastline, offering beautiful views over the North Sea and opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Cleveland Way Walk.

For more experienced walkers, the Cleveland Way is a must. This 110-mile national trail includes a section between Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay , taking you through rugged cliffs and picturesque villages. This route can be challenging, so make sure you’re prepared for a longer hike and steep inclines.

Check the weather

The weather in Whitby can be unpredictable, so it’s crucial to check the forecast before you set off. A sunny day can quickly turn rainy, especially along the coast. Bring layers and waterproof gear to stay comfortable, regardless of the weather.

Whitby In A Storm.

Wind is also a factor to consider, as coastal paths can be exposed to strong gusts. A windproof jacket and secure hat will help keep you warm and protected. Keep an eye on tide times, too, as some sections of the beach may be inaccessible at high tide.

Have essential gear for your walk

Packing the right gear is critical to a successful coastal walk in Whitby. Start with a good pair of walking boots that provide support and grip on uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is essential even on shorter routes to avoid blisters and keep feet happy.

Walking Boots.

Don’t forget to pack a daypack with essentials like water, snacks, a map, and a first-aid kit. A lightweight, packable jacket will keep you dry if the weather turns, and a hat and sunscreen are must-haves for sunny days. Ensure your phone is fully charged in emergencies, and consider bringing a power bank for longer walks.

Stay safe on the coastal path

Safety should always be a priority when walking along Whitby’s coastal paths. Stick to marked trails and avoid venturing too close to the edge of cliffs, as they can be unstable. It is also wise to walk with a friend or let someone know your planned route and estimated return time.

Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay Walk

If you’re walking with children or pets, keep a close eye on them, especially near steep drops or slippery surfaces. Carry a whistle or make sure your phone is accessible in case you need to call for help. Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts—if something feels unsafe, don’t risk it.

Understanding the terrain

Whitby’s coastal terrain can vary from smooth paths to rocky sections, so it’s essential to be prepared for various conditions. The paths can be uneven, with loose stones and narrow sections that require careful footing. Take your time, especially on more challenging routes like the Cleveland Way.

Robin Hood's Bay.

Some paths may be muddy after rain, so walking poles can help balance. If you’re carrying a bag, ensure it’s not too heavy, as this can affect your stability on uneven ground. For those interested in preserving route details or planning their walk using a PDF compressor, make sure your documents are lightweight and easy to access on the go .

Take in the scenery

One of the joys of a coastal walk in Whitby is the breathtaking scenery. Bring a camera or smartphone to capture these moments, but don’t forget to take a moment to enjoy the views.

Ravenscar Seal.

As you walk, keep an eye out for wildlife . Seabirds like puffins and kittiwakes are common; if you’re lucky, you might spot seals basking on the rocks. Take your time to appreciate the natural beauty of Whitby’s coastline—it’s what makes these walks so special.

Learn about local history

Whitby’s coastal paths are steeped in history, allowing you to explore the area’s rich heritage as you walk. The iconic Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula , is a must-see. Its haunting ruins are visible from many points along the coast and offer a glimpse into the area’s monastic past.

Whitby Abbey.

The Whitby Museum is also worth a visit, providing further insights into the town’s maritime history.

Make time for breaks

Taking regular breaks is essential, especially on longer walks. Whitby’s coastal paths offer plenty of spots to stop, rest, and enjoy the views. Pack a picnic and find a quiet spot to enjoy your lunch, or stop at one of the many cafes in the area for a well-earned treat.

St Mary's Churchyard Bench.

Resting isn’t just about refuelling—it’s also an excellent opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the peace and quiet of the coastal surroundings. Stay hydrated, especially on hot days, and listen to your body. If you’re feeling tired, take a break before continuing.

Respect the environment

As you enjoy your coastal walk, respecting the natural environment is important . Stick to the marked paths to avoid damaging local flora and fauna, and take your rubbish with you to keep the area clean. If you come across litter, consider picking it up to help maintain the beauty of Whitby’s coast.

Cleveland Way Walk.

Wildlife is abundant along Whitby’s coastal paths, so keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing any animals you encounter. If you’re walking with a dog, ensure they’re controlled, especially around livestock. Respecting the environment ensures that future generations can enjoy these beautiful walks, too.

Ending your walk in Whitby

Finishing your coastal walk in Whitby offers the perfect opportunity to explore the town. Treat yourself to some fish and chips by the harbour, or visit one of the local pubs for a well-deserved drink. The town’s narrow streets and historic buildings are worth exploring, so take the time to wander and discover hidden gems.

Whitby Whalebones

Before you leave, consider visiting Whitby’s independent shops , where you can find souvenirs and local produce. The town is famous for its Whitby jet jewellery , making a unique memento for your visit. After a day of walking, you’ll appreciate Whitby’s welcoming atmosphere and vibrant local culture.

Planning the perfect coastal walk in Whitby is all about preparation, enjoyment, and respect for the natural surroundings. By choosing the right route, packing essential gear, and staying safe, you can make the most of your time on Whitby’s stunning coastline.

Walk the Cleveland Way on your visit to Staithes.

Whether exploring historic sites, taking in breathtaking views, or simply enjoying the fresh sea air, a coastal walk in Whitby is an experience to cherish. So, lace up your walking boots, grab your map, and get ready to discover the beauty and history of Whitby’s coast.

UK tourists in Spain face a new "six-drink" rule due to "out of control behavrious. Some tourist behaviour has gotten so out of control that all-inclusive hotels around Spain have started issuing a ‘ six-drink rule ’. This means tourists will be capped at six drinks per day when staying at resorts enforcing the rule.

The goal of this new rule is to keep guests from starting their drinking in the morning and carrying on all day long. “Although binge drinking may be common practice in many countries, people in Spain like to take their time with drinking,” explains Christian Wolf, CEO of CW Real Estate Ibiza .

“Tourists often come to Spain ready to party, but what they don’t realise is that binge drinking is not as accepted here,” says Wolf. “It’s important to enjoy yourself, but drinking to excess can lead to public disturbances, property damage, and strained relationships with the locals.”

“Time will tell if this rule will be effective, and if more establishments will enforce it or if it simply fizzles out”, says Wolf. “Many Spaniards like to go out and have several drinks over the span of an evening while snacking on tapas and other small bites”, adds Wolf. “This way they are not just drinking to get drunk, but to enjoy their time with their friends and family and have longevity throughout the night”.

Though Wolf cautioned against tourist’s excessive drinking, he pointed to some other, less serious social faux pas visitors should avoid while in Spain. If you do indulge in a big night out, Wolf says not to expect a big fry-up for breakfast unless going to a restaurant catering only to tourists.

The usual breakfast for Spaniards is coffee and some kind of pastry like a doughnut or croissant. “If you want something on the salty side, ask for a ‘pan con tomate’”, says Wolf. “This is simply a piece of toast with olive oil and crushed tomato on top, and it is Spain’s most popular breakfast food item”.

Passengers on an easyJet flight from London Gatwick to the Greek island of Santorini endured two diversions on the same day, and eventually arrived 20 hours late at their destination.

EasyJet flight 8241 departed about half-an-hour late from London Gatwick, destination Santorini, on Saturday 14 September.

The Airbus A320 flew southeast normally to the Aegean, and made two attempts to land before flying south to Heraklion in Crete, landing at 8.25pm, local time.

After a two-hour wait on the ground, the Airbus A320 took off again and made several more attempts at landing before diverting again, this time to Athens – arriving shortly before 1am, local time.

The pilots and cabin crew needed rest, and as a result the plane did not depart from Athens for the half-hour short hop to Santorini until 4pm on Sunday, with passengers arriving over 20 hours late – with some of them spending the night at the airport, rather than in hotels as stipulated by European air passengers’ rights rules .

Two other flights from London, which had departed on Sunday morning, arrived in Santorini before they did.

The diversions meant that the passengers booked to fly back from Santorini to Gatwick on Saturday evening were delayed overnight.

A spokesperson for easyJet said: “Flight EZY8241 from London Gatwick to Santorini on 14th September was required to divert to Heraklion and then Athens and was delayed overnight due to strong winds in Santorini.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and whilst these circumstances were out outside of our control, we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused and did all we could to support customers.

“We arranged hotel accommodation and meals where available and advised that any customers required to make their own arrangements would be reimbursed.

“However, due to limited hotel availability, some customers stayed in the airport and while we worked with the airport to make them as comfortable as possible in the circumstances and provided refreshment vouchers, we are sorry for the difficulty this will have caused.”

Passengers do not qualify for compensation as the high winds were beyond easyJet’s control.

A Tui flight from Larnaca in Cyprus to Gatwick diverted in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Boeing 737 Max appeared to be on course for a 2.30am arrival at Gatwick, descending to about 5,700 feet. But instead of turning west to land at the Sussex airport, flight 4323 climbed to 12,000 feet and flew north to East Midlands airport, 126 miles away, where it landed at 3am.

The Independent has asked Tui the reason for the diversion.
