INTERVIEW: Eslabon Armado Talks Making Música Mexicana History & New Album “Desvelado”

After making history with música mexicana, Eslabon Armado is keeping the momentum going with the new album Desvelado , which dropped last night (April 27). The Mexican-American group continues to push their sad sierreño sound to new places with features from Grupo Frontera, Jhayco, and Junior H. In an interview with Remezcla, Eslabon Armado open up about their success, their emo LP, and what’s next.

Eslabon Armado just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Last year, the guys’ previous album Nostalgia became the first regional Mexican music album to crack the top 10 of the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. This month, Eslabon Armado made history again when their viral single “Ella Baila Sola” with Peso Pluma, which became the first regional Mexican song to enter the top five of the Hot 100 chart.

“Honestly, I feel super grateful,” Eslabon Armado’s singer Pedro Tovar tells Remezcla. “I didn’t expect the song to reach this high of a level. To reach the Hot 100 and to be the first Mexican song to do that is incredible. It’s another blessing to have another hit.”

Eslabon Armado is aiming even higher with their new album Desvelado . Like Peso Pluma, their LP features all the heavy hitters in regional Mexican music. Another act that is making the genre global is Grupo Frontera. Eslabon Armado teamed up with them for the moody norteño song “Quedate Conmigo,” their latest single. Their frequent collaborator DannyLux also returns for the emo sierreño track “Me Deceptionaste.” Junior H makes an appearance as well in “Mejor Acabar.”

“I feel super good being part of the música mexicana explosion,” Tovar says. “It’s an incredible movement right now that our genre is reaching a whole other level that’s never been seen before. That people all over the world are listening to my music, and they’re discovering who Eslabon Armado is. It’s amazing!”

“I feel super good being part of the música mexicana explosion. It’s an incredible movement right now that our genre is reaching a whole other level that’s never been seen before.”

A surprise feature on the album is Jhayco. The Puerto Rican superstar is no stranger to regional Mexican music. In 2021, he featured on a remix of Ivan Cornejo’s hit “Está Dañada.” But there’s no hint of reggaeton on the song with Eslabon Armado. He adapts himself to the band’s alternative sierreño sound. Jhayco, who broke up with Mia Khalifa last year, sounds at home with Tovar in “Tomando Tequila” as they sing about drinking their heartbreak away.

“I just wanted to bring more romantic and breakup songs back again because that’s my style,” Tovar says. “I feel like I’ll never leave it to do any other style or any other genre. My goal is to do collaborations with really big artists and to put our name out there in the whole world.”

Next month, Eslabon Armado resumes its arenas tour across the U.S. On July 15, the band is headlining their own concert at the Crypto.com Arena in L.A. Their tour will continue to run throughout the fall.

“We’re working harder than ever on tour,” Tovar adds. “There’s more music and more music videos on the way for sure. We want to keep up our name and our exposure and get to that level that we always wanted to.”

Watch: Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma Bring "Ella Baila Sola" To Life At The 2023 Latin GRAMMYs

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma put Música Mexicana into the mainstream with "Ella Baila Sola." Both acts made their debut on the Latin GRAMMY stage, performing their hit collaboration.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Latin Recording Academy (@latingrammys)

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma put Música Mexicana into the mainstream with the global hit "Ella Baila Sola." The collaboration garnered Eslabon Armado two Latin GRAMMY nominations, including Song Of The Year and Best Regional Mexican Song. Backed by a full live Mexican band, the duo offered a fiery performance of the Música Mexicana smash together for the first time at the awards.

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma brought the posh atmosphere of the "Ella Baila Sola" music video to life with an elaborate performance. Women in bright red dresses and masks appeared behind the suited-up members of Eslabon Armado's band. Eslabon Armado’s lead singer, Pedro Tovar, and Peso Pluma were captivated as they sang the corrido love song together.

In those categories, only the songwriter is nominated, which means Eslabon Armado's Pedro Tovar is up for both awards. When the song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma made history with the first Música Mexicana track to crack the Top 10. At the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs, both acts made their debut on the Sevilla stage.

"Ella Baila Sola" was included on Eslabon Armado's sixth album Desvelado , which was released last April. Peso Pluma capitalized on the success of their collaboration and released his breakthrough LP Génesis that following June. With Génesis currently nominated for Best Música Mexicana Album (including Tejano) at the 2024 GRAMMY Awards, Peso Pluma became a first-time GRAMMY nominee.

2024 Latin GRAMMYs: Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album Nominations

The 2024 Latin GRAMMYs will feature a new Category recognizing contemporary albums within the Regional Mexican Music field. Nominated works this year come from Natanael Cano, DannyLux, Grupo Frontera, Carín León, Michelle Maciel, and Peso Pluma.

At the 2024 Latin GRAMMYs , artists will compete in two new Categories this year, including Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album.

The new Category, housed within the Regional Mexican Field, highlights six albums showcasing a rich diversity of Mexican genres . This year’s nominees are Nata Montana by Natanael Cano, DannyLux’s Evoluxion , Jugando A Que No Pasa Nada from Grupo Frontera, Carín León ’s Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 , Trastornado by Michelle Maciel, and Peso Pluma ’s Génesis . The Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album Category reflects the worldwide spread and evolution of Mexican music, and its inaugural nominees embody a generation transforming traditional Mexican sounds and expanding the genre's legacy far and wide. Learn more about the inaugural nominees in the brand-new Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album Category below, and be sure to tune into the 2024 Latin GRAMMYs, officially known as the 25th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, Thursday, Nov. 14 , at 8 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. CT) on Univision, Galavisión and ViX to see who wins.

Natanael Cano — 'Nata Montana'

Natanael Cano, originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, revolutionized Mexican music in 2018 by merging traditional corridos' themes and instrumentation with elements of trap and hip-hop. Eight years later, the corridos tumbados pioneer solidified his distinctive and rebellious style by securing his first Latin GRAMMY nomination.

That nomination is for Nata Montana , which opens with "Dirán De Mi" and "Más Altas Que Bajadas." Both songs lay the narrative foundation for Cano's production, anchored in his rise to the pinnacle of Mexican music and the extravagant lifestyle that comes with it.

Nata Montana stands out as Cano's return to the rhythms that propelled his music career: a sound firmly rooted in the Mexican requinto guitar, featuring reflective and raw songs. These tracks chronicle his daily life as well his struggle for industry recognition, alongside common corrido themes: parties, drugs, women, and alcohol.

Out of the 15 tracks, six are solo performances, and the remaining nine showcase renowned figures in contemporary Mexican music, including Luis R. Conriquez on "Viejo Lobo" and Junior H on "Eres."

DannyLux — 'Evoluxion'

At just 20 years old, DannyLux stands out as the youngest nominee in this category — a nod achieved with Evoluxion , the deluxe version of his 2023 debut album DLUX. The Palm Springs, California native has revolutionized the subgenre of sierreño, which is characterized by a strong presence of guitars that melodically guide vulnerable and melancholy songs, primarily speaking about love.

DannyLux solidifies his image as a Gen Z sierreño troubadour in Evoluxion , a lyrically dense 24-track album that explores love, relationships, and vulnerability. DannyLux pushes the boundaries of sierreño by incorporating elements of rock, electronic music, and alternative genres.

The album features seven new tracks written and produced by DannyLux, including the sierreño "Maldito Alcohol" and "House of Lux 2," a continuation of the namesake song in which DannyLux delves back into electronic music.

Grupo Frontera — 'Jugando A Que No Pasa Nada'

Grupo Frontera's story could be the plot of a Hollywood movie. The group went from playing at family parties and local weddings in Edinburg, Texas, to becoming one of the most recognized bands of a new generation of Mexican music.

Their Bad Bunny collaboration, "Un x100to," propelled the group to international stardom (and earned a Latin GRAMMY nomination for Song Of The Year, and a win for Best Regional Mexican Song) as they fully embraced the cumbia genre, which had already been helping them gain recognition locally and on social media. After a 2023 for the books, the sextet arrives with their sophomore album, Jugando A Que No Pasa Nada , a 12-song production that pays tribute to their roots and the genres that shaped the group's musical taste — from hip-hop to corridos and country.

On Jugando A Que No Pasa Nada , Grupo Frontera collaborate with an array of diverse artists such as the Colombian reggaeton superstar Maluma on "POR QUÉ SERÁ," Argentine rapper Nicki Nicole on "DESQUITE," the Colombian band Morat on "LOS DOS," and Mexican star Christian Nodal on "YA PEDO QUIÉN SABE."

Grupo Frontera's magic lies in the simplicity of their sound and lyrics. The group favors live instruments over samples and uses relatable lyrics adapted to modern vernacular, winning over Gen Z, the generation behind the global explosion of Mexican music .

Carin León — 'Boca Chueca, Vol. 1'

In Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 , Latin GRAMMY-winning artist Carín León proves that Mexican music has no limits.

His fifth studio album is perhaps the most transgressive of his career and positions León as one of Mexican music's mavericks. Over 19 tracks, León fearlessly delves into the darkness within as he seeks to reconcile "with aspects that are often considered negative but are also part of me," the singer explained in May through a press release.

The musical and internal exercise produced a profoundly personal and eclectic album. In Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 , the star takes a deep dive into genres that are part of his diverse musical upbringing without neglecting the norteño sound that put him on the music industry's radar. The production features songs like the corrido "Casi Oficial" or "Aviso Importante," where Carin vocally masters the emotionality of blues and soul.

León also explores the sensuality of R&B in songs like "Despídase Bien," country in "The One (Pero no como yo)" alongside Kane Brown and the pop-rock in the ballad "It was always you (Siempre fuiste tú)" featuring Leon Bridges .

Michelle Maciel — 'Trastornado'

Michelle Maciel is defying Mexican music boundaries in more ways than one. The singer is part of a new generation of performers representing the Latin LGBTQ+ community in música Mexicana.

Maciel's foray into music happened in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many, the uncertain future led the singer to bet on his passion, music. With TikTok as an ally, Maciel began sharing some of his songs, initially in the Latin urban realm, quickly growing a devoted following.

Recognition on social media led the singer to expand sonically, choosing Mexican music as the next genre to explore. This experimentation resulted in collaborations like "CCC" with Eden Muñoz , marking Maciel's first global hit.

The single sets the tone for Trastornado , Maciel’s debut album. On this record, the Mexican artist showcases his rich musical versatility by seamlessly navigating genres such as corrido in "El Susto," cumbia in "QPTP" with Yahritza Y Su Esencia , "ABCDARIO," a song that blends Mexican brass and guitars with EDM beats, or the urban-infused "PVTIVUELTA."

Peso Pluma — 'Génesis'

Peso Pluma is at the forefront of the new generation of Mexican music and, unlike his colleagues, arrives on this list with a production already awarded earlier this year — by the GRAMMYs.

Despite being his third studio album, Peso Pluma considers GÉNESIS his real debut in music. The artist's name is a declaration of purpose, influenced by the first book of the Bible.

GÉNESIS arrived on the heels of a global breakthrough year for Peso Pluma. The singer burst onto the world scene in 2023 thanks to "Ella Baila Sola," his collaboration with the Mexican group Eslabón Armado, which they brought to life on the Latin GRAMMY stage in 2023 .

In GÉNESIS , Peso Pluma takes corridos tumbados to the next level through an exemplary play of fast-paced guitars, strident brass, and a defiant interpretation guided by the singer's unique hoarse vocals.

Drawing inspiration from the hip-hop collaboration spirit, in GÉNESIS Peso Pluma teams up with genre heavy-hitters such as Junior H in "LUNA," Natanael Cano in "PRC," Gabito Ballesteros in the global-smasher "Lady Gaga" (alongside Cano), or Luis R Conriquez in "SU CASA."

7 Artists Bringing Reggaeton Mexa To The World: El Malilla, Bellakath & More

Pulling from the genre's underground roots in Puerto Rico, these fast-rising reggaeton Mexa artists infuse their own culture and grit into a globally-appealing sound.

Música Mexicana isn't the only sound of Mexico that's blowing up; the country's artists are now starting to make their mark in reggaeton. Imbued with the essence, swagger, and lingo of Mexico, reggaeton Mexa i s the next big Latin sound that's going global.

Originating in the Caribbean, reggaeton evolved from Panama’s reggae en español and Jamaican dancehall of the 1980s. Puerto Rican acts like DJ Playero and DJ Nelson shaped the sound of reggaeton in the island's underground scene during the '90s, while Daddy Yankee , Tego Calderón , Don Omar, and Ivy Queen pushed the genre into the mainstream at the dawn of the new millennium.

Boricua acts Tainy , Bad Bunny , and Ozuna pushed reggaeton into the next decade, though Colombia also brought about the genre's second wind. J Balvin 's success solidified Medellín as a reggaeton hotbed, spawning Maluma , Karol G , and Feid as global stars.

In the 2020s, Mexico is becoming the next hub for reggaeton as artists who grew up listening to the Puerto Rican OGs  — as well as Mexican acts Ghetto Kids and Pablito Mix — are now putting their own stamp on the genre. In late 2022, Bellakath put a spotlight on reggaeton Mexa with her viral hit "Gatita"; the following year, Yng Lvcas took the sound to new heights with his "La Bebé " remix featuring Peso Pluma , which reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Reggaeton Mexa pulls from the genre's underground roots in Puerto Rico, infusing its songs with Mexican culture and grit. Lyrics are full of Mexican slang that reflect life in the barrios .

"Reggaeton Mexa is reminiscent of the sounds of the '90s and 2000s from Puerto Rican DJs like Playero and Joe," El Mallila , one of the reggaeton Mexa leaders, tells GRAMMY.com. "The songs, the beats, and rhythms are more or less similar to that flow. The difference here is the Mexican jargon. Reggaeton Mexa is spicy. We play with Mexican profanities without being offensive."

The emerging genre has gained traction among the larger reggaeton community with Jowell y Randy, Maldy, and J Balvin recently featuring on their songs. Following the success of Yng Lvcas , Bellakath , and El Malilla , Mexican acts like Peso Pluma (who dedicated part of his Éxodo album to reggaeton) and pop star Kenia Os are embracing the wave. As the tide continues to rise for reggaeton Mexa , GRAMMY.com is highlighting seven of the sound's leading artists.

Guadalajara, Jalisco native Yng Lvcas noted that no one around him could name a Mexican reggaeton artist, so he decided to fill that void.

An early encounter would make for auspicious beginnings. As he was signing a record contract with Warner early last year, Yng Lvcas crossed paths with Peso Pluma. The música Mexicana star's first foray in reggaeton was with Yng Lvcas and their global hit, a sensual remix of "La Bebé ." Their collaboration became the first reggaeton song by Mexican artists to enter the Hot 100 chart.

Last October, Yng Lvcas released his album Super Estrellas to put a spotlight on more reggaeton Mexa acts. The LP included songs with El Malilla and El Bogueto . Puerto Rican OG Maldy later teamed up with Yng Lvcas for the hypnotic " Diviértete ."

The first artist to get the global conversation started about reggaeton Mexa was Bellakath . After earning a law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the Mexico City native became a social media personality. Bellakath leveraged her following to start her music career, which exploded in late 2022 with the frisky "Gatita." The song went viral on TikTok and the music video has over 144 million views on YouTube.

In the male-dominated reggaeton Mexa scene, Bellakath is continuing to keep women on top. Last year, she released her debut album Kittyponeo with the hit "Reggaeton Champagne" featuring Dani Flow. After signing with Warner in May, Bellakath dropped " Sandunguea ," which sampled the reggaeton classic "Mayor Que Yo " by Luny Tunes. On July 15, Bellakath released her second album, Sata 42, where she ventured into dembow music with artists from the Dominican Republic.

El Malilla proudly represents the chakalones (Mexican slang for "bad boys") in reggaeton Mexa . Hailing from Valle de Chalco, El Malilla remembers his first encounter with reggaeton as a teen came from the pirated CDs that were sold at the tianguis , or open-air markets.

Now, El Malilla is bringing Mexico's version of reggaeton to the forefront. He recently released his debut album ÑEROSTARS , which includes his viral hit "B de Bellako " with Yeyo . Back in May, Puerto Rican OGs Jowell y Randy jumped on a remix of the quirky banger.

El Malilla also wants to make reggaeton Mexa more inclusive. Reggaeton has historically excluded LGBTQIA+ folks , though queer artists such as Young Miko , Villano Antillano , and La Cruz are changing that tune. On the Mexican front, El Malilla wanted to be an ally to his queer fans with the 2000-inspired " Rebote " music video, which was shot at the gay club Spartacus with Mexican drag queens.

Within his album, El Malilla is also stretching the bounds of his artistry by exploring merengue in " Coronada " and experimenting with house music in "Todo Tiene Su Final." " ÑEROSTARS is a call to all the reggaeton Mexa artists to dare themselves to make new music and try different sounds," he says. "Don’t stay in your comfort zone just making perreo ."

Veracruz native Yeri Mua is keeping a high heel firmly planted on the neck of the genre, holding it down for the women in reggaeton Mexa .

Mua started out doing makeup tutorials on YouTube and later grew a massive social media following. Last year, she launched her music career on Uzielito Mix's reggaeton romp "Línea del Perreo ," which has over 103 million streams on Spotify. In songs like " Chupon ," Mua brings a fierce femininity to reggaeton Mexa while flipping the genre's explicit lyrics from a woman's perspective. In April, Kenia Os tapped Mua and Ghetto Kids for her reggaeton Mexa banger "Mamita Rica." With a laugh, Os told GRAMMY.com at the time, "[Mua] sounds very sexy and makes noises like meowing. It felt very great to work with her." Last month, Mua signed a record contract with Sony Music México.

Alongside El Malilla , El Bogueto is one of the OGs of reggaeton Mexa . The Nezahualcóyotl native has scored a number of hits since 2021, including "Tu Favo " and "G Low Kitty," which has nearly 60 million streams on Spotify.

The title of El Bogueto's 2023 debut album Reggaetoñerito is an amalgamation of the words reggaetonero and ñero , which is Mexican slang for a person from the hood. El Bogueto has continued to rack up millions of streams with his LP, which include hits like the freaky reggaeton romp " Piripituchy " and "Dale Bogueto ." In May, J Balvin gave his co-sign to El Bogueto and the reggaeton Mexa scene when he jumped on an all-star remix of "G Low Kitty."

Among the artists on this list, Yeyo is the freshest one on the reggaeton Mexa scene, but he's fast becoming one of the genre's brightest stars and the go-to artist for a hit collaboration. The Zacatepec , Morelos native is a protege of Ghetto Kids' Luis Díaz , who also serves as his manager.

Yeyo's playful and infectious flow as a Mexican reggaetonero has translated into million of streams in songs like "B de Bellako " with El Malilla and "Mami Chakalosa " alongside Bellakath . He has also flexed a romantic side to his distinct voice in Ghetto Kids' recent hit "En El Ghetto #5 (La Discoteca)." Yeyo has also shined on the electronica-leaning reggaeton of " Maldad " and the sensual " Tentación ."

Uzielito Mix

Many of the songs mentioned in this list wouldn't have been possible without Uzielito Mix. Following in the footsteps of Ghetto Kids and Pablito Mix, the Mexico City-based producer has become the backbone of the sound of reggaeton Mexa . Uzielito Mix produced Yeri Mua's hits like "Línea del Perreo " and " Brattiputy ." He also co-produced El Bogueto and El Mallila's "G Low Kitty" with DJ Rockwell, which J Balvin later hopped on.

In his stellar collaborations, Uzielito Mix is known for uniting many of the reggaeton Mexa stars. He continues to push the sound of the genre into the future like in the spooky " Espantan " remix with El Bogueto , Alnz G, Dani Flow, and Tensec . In 2022, Bad Bunny tapped Uzielito Mix to open his World's Hottest Tour stops in Mexico City.

Peso Pluma's Road To 'ÉXODO': The GRAMMY Winner Navigates The Consequences Of Global Stardom On New Album

"Fans really get to see the other side of the coin; there are two sides to me. It's darker, rawer," Peso Pluma says of his latest album 'ÉXODO'

Peso Pluma marked his musical destiny with a Tupac tribute tattoo in the center of his clavicle: "All Eyez On Me."

The Mexican artist, born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija , doesn't remember exactly what year he inked his chest. He knows it was well before his debut in music. Those four words reflected Peso's irrefutable confidence that the world's eyes would eventually be on him.

The world's eyes are indeed on Peso Pluma. In less than two years, the singer achieved global fame by singing corridos tumbados , traversing a path never before trodden by a música Mexicana artist.

At 25, Peso Pluma is at the forefront of a new generation of música Mexicana artists that have successfully modernized traditional Mexican rhythms, such as corridos , by infusing them with elements from urban music and a hip-hop aesthetic. The weight of representing an entire genre and a country could be great for some. But pressure doesn't affect Peso Pluma; on the contrary, it motivates him to keep working to exalt his roots.

"We've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. And that doesn't mean we have to slow down; it doesn't mean everything is over. This is the beginning of everything," Peso Pluma said in a TikTok video before a performance at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, Canada, a little over a year ago.

Out June 20, Peso's extensive new album ÉXODO seeks to cement his global star status further. Over 24 tracks, the singer continues to explore corridos tumbados and digs into his urban side via much-awaited collaborations with reggaeton and hip-hop icons. Among those big names is Peso's teenage idol, the American rapper and producer Quavo , as well as further afield collaborations with Cardi B .

" ÉXODO is a project I've been working on for over a year before we even won the GRAMMY. GÉNESIS was an incredibly special project, and I knew we couldn't make the same diamond twice," the singer tells GRAMMY.com in a written interview.

Peso Pluma's path to the global stage has been lightning-fast. While he started releasing songs in 2020, Peso will remember March 2023 as the month that propelled him into global mega-stardom. His collaboration with Eslabón Armado on "Ella Baila Sola" led him to become a household name outside his native Mexico.

The hit resonated with an audience eager for new sounds, accompanying social media videos and surpassing a billion streams on Spotify. "Ella Baila Sola" became the first Mexican music track to top the platform's global chart. On Billboard, it conquered No. 1 on the magazine's Global 200 chart for six weeks and reached the coveted No. 4 spot on the Hot 100 chart. The mega-hit took Peso Pluma and Eslabon Armado to make their Latin GRAMMY stage debut in November with an electrifying performance.

Another collaboration, "La Bebe (Remix)" with Mexican reggaeton artist Yng Lvcas , released a day after "Ella Baila Sola," also contributed to Peso Pluma's virality in a completely different genre, but one in which he feels comfortable: urban music.

Learn more: Peso Pluma's 10 Biggest Collabs: From "Bzrp Sessions" To "Ella Baila Sola" &"Igual Que Un Ángel"

As Peso Pluma gained traction with a global audience, his February 2022 single with Raúl Vega, put him, for better or worse, on the map in Mexico. The warlike content of "El Belicón" lyrics and video clip attracted attention for the way it allegedly promoted narcoculture.

Despite growing criticism, Peso Pluma remained tight-lipped regarding references to high-profile members of the Mexican drug trade, as well as drug use and trafficking. In a rare admission to GQ magazine, the singer explained this is a "delicate subject to talk about, but you have to touch on it with transparency — because it's the reality of things."

"In hip-hop, in rap, just like in corridos , and other urban music like reggaeton, it talks about reality. We're not promoting delinquency at all. We're only talking about things that happen in real life," the singer explained.

With the success of "El Belicón " and "Ella Baila Sola" under his belt, Peso Pluma released GÉNESIS in June 2023. Despite being his third album, Peso considers it his true debut in music.

"I didn't want to delete my previous albums [ Efectos Secundario and Ah Y Que? ] because they represent my beginnings," Peso told Billboard in a cover story published a few weeks after the release of GÉNESIS . In the same conversation, the singer said he saw himself winning his first GRAMMY and breaking more records.

Read more: 5 Takeaways From Peso Pluma's New Album 'GÉNESIS'

In February 2024, Peso Pluma did just that. He took home the golden gramophone for Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano) — his first GRAMMY Award . This victory didn't weigh on him as he approached his next production. "It pushed me to want to create something different that the fans haven't heard from me before," Peso Pluma tells GRAMMY.com.

While GÉNESIS and ÉXODO may differ in substance, they share similarities beyond music. That both records pull from the Bible for their names is not a random occurrence; the opening book of the Hebrew and Christian Bible delves into the genesis of creation, while the Book of Exodus explores the themes of liberation, redemption, and Moses' role in leading the Israelites through the uncharted waters of the Red Sea.

" ÉXODO is the continuation of GÉNESIS , which was the beginning," Peso Pluma explains to GRAMMY.com. " ÉXODO means new beginnings, a new era for me. We are preparing for the next chapter, and that's what we are doing for Mexican music, paving the way, laying the groundwork for what's next because it doesn't stop here."

His "sophomore" album is divided into two discs: the first is corridos , and the second is urban. It also continues the line of collaborations, with twenty tracks where Peso Pluma shares the limelight.

"Some of my fans were craving música Mexicana, and some were craving urbano , and I wanted to give them everything while still staying true to myself and choosing songs and lyrics that spoke to me," he continues.

ÉXODO 's disc one starts with "LA DURANGO," the album's fourth single, featuring Eslabon Armando and Junior H. In the record, he also invites collaborators such as Natanael Cano and Gabito Ballesteros for "VINO TINTO" and Mexican rising star Ivan Cornejo on the melancholic "RELOJ," among others.

For Side B, Peso enlisted heavyweights from the urban genre in the Anglo and Latin markets: Anitta in the steamy "BELLAKEO," Rich The Kid in the bilingual "GIMME A SECOND," and Quavo in the existential trap "PA NO PENSAR." Cardi B, Arcángel , Ryan Castro, Kenia OS , and DJ Snake complete ÉXODO's genre crossover.

In ÉXODO , luxury, drugs, alcohol, and women continue to take center stage in the lyrics, accompanied by fast-paced guitar-driven melodies and reverb-dense vocals. However, the production sheds light on the vulnerable side of Peso and explores the unexpected consequences of becoming globally famous.

"Fans really get to see the other side of the coin; there are two sides to me. It's darker, rawer," Peso says about the record.

In the songs "HOLLYWOOD" and "LA PATRULLA," for example, Peso details how this musical path keeps him up at night, as well as his aspirations, and how he remains the same despite his success.

Perhaps one of the deepest and rawest songs on the album is "14:14," a track inspired by the Bible verse 14:14 from the Book of Exodus , which, the singer explains, was fundamental amidst the turbulence he faced on the way to global stardom.

"[The] verse 14:14 says 'The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.' This verse couldn't be truer," Peso Pluma says. "Over time, I learned to really trust in this and believe that some things are not up to me and I should trust the process."

In the song — one of the few on the album without a collaboration — Peso references the challenges of his profession and how his faith has kept him afloat amid the vicissitudes. "Things from the job that no one understands/I hide the rosary under my shirt so I don't poison myself, so I don't feel guilty/because whatever happens, the Boss will forgive me," he sings.

In "BRUCE WAYNE," Peso Pluma croons about the passionate feelings his career arouses: "First they love you, and then they hate you/wishing the worst, envy and death," the song says.

The singer resorts to comparing himself to a superhero figure again. In an unusual twist, Peso crosses comic universes, moving from his now traditional reference to Spider-Man to one from the DC Comics world: Bruce Wayne, Batman's secret identity. A wealthy man, part of Gotham's high society, Bruce Wayne is known for transforming his darkness into power while remaining reserved and isolated.

"Everyone has two sides of them, even me," Peso tells GRAMMY.com. "Peso Pluma on stage is a high-energy person, someone who is powerful and dominates a show and isn't afraid of anything. And then there is Hassan, who's chill and more relaxed and who deals with all the realities of life."

During the year and a half it took him to complete ÉXODO , Peso Pluma had to deal with the diverse nuances of a global star's life, including a widely publicized breakup from Argentine rapper/singer Nicki Nicole , the cancellation of one of his shows in October 2023 after a Mexico drug cartel issued a death threat against him, and a media frenzy over his alleged admission to a rehabilitation clinic, the latest a rumor he laid to rest during a March interview with Rolling Stone for his Future of Music cover story.

"The reality is, all these days, I've been in the studio working on ÉXODO ," the artist explained to Rolling Stone .

Most of 2023 was a successful balancing act for Peso Pluma, who combined touring, an album release, rare media engagements, two Coachella appearances , all the while developing another record. According to the singer, ÉXODO was created in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Mexico. "We go to the studio everywhere!" Peso says. "It doesn't really matter where we are; I love to get into the studio and work when we have free time."

Like GÉNESIS , ÉXODO will be released via Peso Pluma's Double P Records, of which he is the CEO and A&R. Much of the talent the Mexican singer has signed to his label took part in the album's production, and songwriting process.

"For the Mexican music side, I had the whole [touring] band with me; I like to have them involved in the process so that we can all give our input on how it sounds, discuss what we think needs to be changed, create new ideas," he explains.

Peso Pluma knows that echoing the success of 2023 is no easy task. He was the most streamed artist in the U.S. on YouTube , surpassing Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny , and was the second most-listened to Latin artist in the country, amassing an impressive 1.9 billion streams, according to Luminate .

Música Mexicana emerged as one of the most successful genres in 2023, witnessing a remarkable 60 percent surge in streaming numbers, adds Luminate's annual report , crediting Peso Pluma along Eslabon Armado , Junior H, and Fuerza Regida as part of this success.

Collaborations on and off the mic have undoubtedly played a significant role in the rise of Música Mexicana on the global stage. Peso knows that the key to continuing onward is teaming up with renowned artists inside and outside his genre.

"All of us coming together is what pushed música Mexicana to go global," the singer affirms. "We showed the world what Mexico has to offer, and now no one can deny the power and talent we have in our country."

How The Latin GRAMMYs Brought Latin Music Excellence To The 2024 GRAMMYs

Latin music was celebrated throughout GRAMMY Week and on Music's Biggest Night. Read on for the many ways Latin music excellence was showcased at the 204 GRAMMYs.

The 2023 Latin GRAMMYs may have occurred months ago and thousands of miles away, but the leading lights in Latin music also shined at the 66th GRAMMY Awards . From historic wins and meaningful nominations, to electric performances and interesting installations, Latin music excellence was everywhere.

In anticipation of the 25th anniversary of the Latin GRAMMYs in 2024, the exclusive GRAMMY House — the site of multiple GRAMMY Week events — included a significant installation dedicated to the Biggest Night In Latin Music.

The cylindrical display showcased some of the biggest moments in Latin GRAMMY history, including images, facts, and even a real Latin GRAMMY award.

The celebration of Latin music continued throughout GRAMMY Week, with several Latin GRAMMY-winning artists also winning on the GRAMMY stage. Among the major moments at the 2024 GRAMMYs, Karol G won her first golden gramophone for her 2023 LP Mañana Será Bonito . "This is my first time at GRAMMYs, and this is my first time holding my own GRAMMY," the Colombian songstress exclaimed during her acceptance speech.

Música Mexicana star Peso Pluma also took home his first GRAMMY; his album GÉNESIS won in the Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano) Category.

Premiere Ceremony presenter Natalia Lafourcade — whose Todas Las Flores won big at the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs — also took home the GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. She tied in the Category with Juanes .

Premiere Ceremony performer Gabby Moreno also took home a GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Pop Album for her album X Mí (Vol. 1) .

Beyond the stage, Latin artists graced the red carpet and the nominations list. For example, producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera was the only Latino nominated in the Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical Category.

Essential Albums

“For two months, I couldn't write, then it just clicked out of nowhere,” Pedro Tovar tells Apple Music about Eslabon Armado’s latest album. Following the back-to-back successes of Tu Veneno Mortal and Vibras de Noche, conjuring up a third album in the same year was no small feat for the leader of the hugely popular regional Mexican project. Thankfully, when the inspiration came, it produced a flood of new material. As such, Corta Venas spans two dozen songs over more than an hour and a half of running time. A number of its tracks, including the emotionally resonant “Ando Más Que Mal,” were initially previewed via social media, where Tovar’s fans could react in real time. One such session yielded the album title itself. “Basically what it means is it's going to be hard,” he says of its meaning. “It’s going to break your heart, cut your veins.” Learn more about some of his favorite songs from Corta Venas below, in his own words. Ando Más Que Mal “After Vibras de Noche, I didn't write anything for months. In September, I wrote this little song. It came out of nowhere. Basically, this song gave me motivation, because I had an experience with this girl and it didn't turn out. I just came home, I wrote the song. I went live, and then people started liking it and liking it. And then, it went viral just like 'Dame Tu Calor' on Vibras de Noche. I'm basically the guy in the song who has experienced all these sad, sad things.” Jugaste y Sufrí “That song was written by DannyLux. He's a young kid that I met through Instagram. He showed me some songs and there was just one, that's 'Jugaste y Sufrí.' I liked it a lot because it reminds me of '24 Horas' but it has a different rhythm. This song just came naturally. Honestly, he's a badass kid. He's 16. Honestly, in my opinion, he's probably coming up next. This kid has a lot of freaking potential and his lyrics are clean and sound is clean.” Mi Historia Entre Tus Dedos “This song is actually a cover. It's by Gianluca Grignani. My dad would always dedicate this song to my mom, when they were in Mexico, they were in love in their teenage years. When I was young, I would always go to work with my dad, and he would always put on the song. I started to make the song mine, basically just do it my own way. I recorded it in my little studio. I was like, 'Damn, this song is hard and what he says is meaningful. Now I know why my dad dedicated this song to my mom.' I never actually paid attention to it and wanted to play it until two months ago.” ¿Dime Por Qué? “This was probably one of the last songs I wrote for the album. I just vibed with it in my room with my guitar one day. I decided to put a preview online, and people actually liked it. It's a sad-ass song. Basically, it says in the title, 'Tell me why. Tell me why you're not with me.' I decided to put two electric guitars instead of two acoustic guitars, because the group is usually known for the guitars.” Me Matas “I decided to not put out an album of purely depressing songs. There are some love songs, a couple, and then there's this. Basically, the song is about a guy getting at a girl, but the girl has someone else. But the girl likes the guy and they secretly get together at times at night. They just do their thing. I think it's relatable to anyone because it gives you that night vibe, that you can be with someone and just chill with them and do whatever you want. Basically, the song is an explicit song, you could say. It gives you little hints with what the lyrics say.” Soy Tóxico “I was trying to get in other people's heads, another mindset. This song is about a toxic relationship, where the couple, they're very freaking toxic. They don't want either the girl or guy to have any friends or anything. I'm pretty sure everyone will relate to the song. I find it very catchy.”

About eslabon armado.

Hailing from Patterson, CA, Eslabon Armado became one of the leading voices in corridos tumbados and the sierreño wave of the 2020s with searing love songs and a rustic signature style. Formed in 2017 by brothers Pedro and Brian Tovar and their friend Gabriel Hidalgo, the trio's DIY after-school videos started gaining traction on social media, eventually getting the attention of executives at influential música-mexicana label DEL Records. Eslabon Armado's breakthrough came in 2020 with “Con Tus Besos,” off the album Tu Veneno Mortal, which was loaded with romantic angst and giant hooks that would define future hits like “Cuando Tú Me Miras” and the DannyLux-featuring “Jugaste y Sufrí.” In 2023, the band became a global sensation with “Ella Baila Sola,” a blockbuster collaboration with singer and rapper Peso Pluma. The song was the first corrido to enter the Billboard Top 10, helping to mainstream the style.

Pedro Tovar | Biography

Eslabon Armado, a California-based musical band, meaning "linked chain," was initially formed in 2017. Alongside the lead vocalist Pedro Tovar, the band's other members include Bryan Tovar, also his brother, responsible for bass and bajoloche, and Gabriel Hidalgo, responsible for harmony and background vocals. Hidalgo left the group in 2021. The group has released four albums so far.

  • Update : September 20, 2021

Pedro Tovar is the lead vocalist of the California-based musical ensemble Eslabon Armado.

Who is Pedro Tovar?

Pedro Tovar is the lead vocalist and songwriter for the musical group Eslabon Armado. He showcases a larger interest in producing sierreña music with a blend of diverse musical instruments and harmonies. He wrote songs for Eslabon Armado, including 'Con Tus Besos,' 'La Trokita,' and a slew of others for the band's chart-topping albums,  Tu Veneno Mortal ,  Vibras de Noche , and  Corta Venas , all due out in 2020.

Pedro Tovar was born on 22 July 2002 in California, United States. He was introduced to music production by his father. His father assisted Eslabon Armado with their musical discoveries and even came up with the name Eslabon Armado for the band.

Tovar's father used to listen to sierreña music, which eventually piqued his attention. Though not professionally, his father used to compose songs, which ultimately excited Tovar to begin composing one on his own even before he could reach 10.

Eslabon Armado

Eslabon Armado, a California-based musical band, meaning "linked chain," was initially formed in 2017. Alongside the lead vocalist Pedro Tovar, the band's other members include Bryan Tovar, also his brother, responsible for bass and bajoloche, and Gabriel Hidalgo, responsible for harmony and background vocals.

Eslabon Armado commenced by studying and performing ranchera and norteño music before venturing out to compose their copyright records. However, they had conceptualized a blueprint of what they wanted to bring into the music industry. As teenagers, they were inspired by sierreña music attributable to the late, chart-topping Regional Mexican singer Ariel Camacho. They wanted to make alternative music that used a wide range of musical instruments while remaining true to the sierreña style's guitar approach. Years later, their releases reshaped Regional Mexican music of ranchera with that of sierreña music by their interlaced vocal harmonies, interwoven acoustic guitars, and basses.

The group formerly broadcasted live videos on YouTube and other social media platforms. Their performances grabbed the attention of a record label, Del Record. Subsequently, its boss and promoter, Ángel del Villar, approached them and signed them to the roster.

The band's debut single, 'Con Tus Besos,' was released in late March 2020, along with a music video. A week later, it reached number 21 on the Hot Latin Songs Chart and number 16 on the Latin Streaming Songs Chart. Successively,  Tu Veneno Mortal , their 10-tracks debut album, was released in May 2020. The album peaked at number 2 on the Regional Mexican Albums Chart, ultimately rising to number one and reaching number seven on the Top Latin Albums Chart.

In June, they released their second single, 'La Trokita,' accompanied by a video. In just the first two weeks after its distribution, the video received over a million views.

Similarly, they released their second album,  Vibras de Noche , with 14 tracks in November 2020. It topped on ranks on the Latin Albums and Mexican Regional Albums Charts and got to number 18 on the Billboard Top 200.

Eslabon Armado again released their third chart-topping album  Corta Venas  in December 2020. It consisted of 22 songs. The album scored number-one on Mexican Regional Albums Charts, number two on the Latin Albums chart, and made it to number 56 on the Top 200. They have more than 5.8 million monthly listeners as of September 2021.

Eslabon Armado was named the top Latin duo/group at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards in May. One of their bandmates, Hidalgo, left the group in 2021.

Songwriting

Pedro Tovar composed all songs for the chart-topping albums. Eventually, he didn't have the energy or mentality to write anymore. Yet, the band was required to produce a new album by June 2021. So, he stayed in a remote resort environment conducive to inspiration and relaxation and however managed to create 11 songs for the album  Tu Veneno Mortal, Vol. 2 , in a week.

About completion of the songwriting, Tovar told Billboard, "I like to say that it wasn't me, it was God who wrote these songs," he said and added, "My mom turned on 11 candles, which I had no clue about until after I finished writing, and I wrote 11 songs. God definitely helped me because I wouldn't have been able to write these songs if it wasn't for him."

Tu Veneno Mortal, Vol. 2  was Eslabon Armado's first album without their background vocalist Hidalgo.

Creating Music

For Tovar, the creation of a good melody was the most important facet of music production. He explained that writing lyrics would be easy and simple when a good tune has been created. In 2021, he told Billboard that he has been refining his songwriting technique by paying close attention to a wide range of music genres.

"I like R&B, alternative and I get words in English that I think work for those genres and translate them to Spanish. It's important for me to listen to different genres and artists, and pay attention to what makes a catchy song. What words they are using," he continued.

Social Media Fame

Tovar is a well-known figure on social media. He has over 1.1 million Instagram followers and over 700,000 TikTok followers.

Eslabón Armado Helped Make Musica Mexicana History. What’s Next?

By Vita Dadoo

Few people have had a better year than Pedro Tovar. The 21-year-old singer is the voice behind Eslabón Armado , one of the biggest bands in the booming música Mexicana scene. This year, Eslabón Armado released Desvelado, a follow up to their 2022 emo sierreño opus, Nostalgia , which made history on the charts.

Desvelado features “Ella Baila Sola,” the track with Guadalajara-raised artist Peso Pluma that also made huge waves: “Ella Baila Sola” was crowned the song of the summer , its first few guitar chords followed by blaring horns reverberating across park barbecues in New York City, clubs across Mexico, and, as I experienced recently, a coffee shop in the Baltic city of Gdansk, Poland.

In the past couple months, Tovar and his band-mates, the California natives Brian Tovar, Damian Pacheco, and Ulises González, have performed on Good Morning America , they threw the first pitch at a Dodgers game, received a couple of Latin Grammy nominations, and played the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Just a few days ago, Tovar fulfilled a longtime dream of seeing Mexican pop-star Luis Miguel live. “I low-key cried when he came out,” said Tovar, who once referred to El Sol de México as his “freakin daddy.”

The following interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Congratulations on the Latin Grammy nominations, the Dodgers pitch, and turning 21 this year. All very big! Thank you so much. It’s been a year… I’m a little bit tired because yesterday I went to see Luis Miguel.

That’s huge. Didn’t you mention in an interview that that’s who you really wanted to see him live? Yeah. I low-key cried when he came out…I cried during two songs.

Peso Pluma Surprises Coachella's Weekend Two Crowd With Anitta, Eslabon Armado, and More

Women ruled the 2023 latin grammys, eslabon armado and peso pluma unite at the latin grammys for first televised performance of 'ella baila sola'.

Did you imagine a specific setting in which someone would hear this song as you’re recording it?   Probably just out with their friends or by themselves, in the gym or wherever they feel empowered, because it’s an empowering pop song. It’s a girl who’s in control because you’re always hearing a guy in a song, and it’s usually about him and then the girl comes in. I’ve always wanted to do a song like [“La Fresa”] but it never worked out, and I think this one has the vibe.

So are you saying this song is for the girls? Basically.

You’ve mentioned that sometimes you imagine Morgan Wallen or Zach Ryan or Luke Combs in your songs. As we know, there’s been a lot of cross-genre collaborations in   música Mexicana. How do you see the movement stretching out from its original bounds and incorporating more pan-Latin influences and even Americana? I think the sound has been changing for the last 20 years, not to say that back then, it was all just banda and norteña. But now we’re putting in traditional instruments to the banda, like the trombone, and we’re just mixing a sound that will catch people’s ears, something that will sound new and fresh. It’s a whole new sound, basically. And I feel like that’s what other artists from other genres are liking, because they have the ear for it, but it’s just new to them.

Critics have pointed out that música mexicana isn’t just a moment, but rather it’s a movement that has long been in the making. And Eslabón Armado is one of the artists leading this movement now. Why do you think this genre has gotten so big among such different audiences without sacrificing its core sound? It’s gotten big because there’s an audience of people ages like 10 to 15, maybe 16, 17, 18 that are consuming the music in a whole different way than back then. I feel like now, like it’s just the younger audience that are loving the music, and it makes them want to start playing music, and it makes them want to start singing, and playing guitar just like how I did when I was 14 or 13. When I listened to Ariel Camacho I was like, I want to do this – I want to pick up a guitar, I want to play. And it’s the same thing. It’s just a cycle that’s going on and on and on. But it’s just growing bigger, and it’s going to continue to be bigger and hopefully they will change the name. Instead of Regional Mexican, I want it to be música mexicana.

You’ve accomplished a lot this year, but this year is not over for you. What are you looking forward to the most? What can we expect from you? We’re doing this album, which we’re trying to release at the end of this year and hopefully it does happen. Kind of like a surprise album that I don’t want a lot of people to know but some people already [who] know are actually fans. I want to drop it unexpectedly and there’s songs in there that are really good. Just release more music, more videos, and keep making people happy. I think those have always been my goals and I think I’m achieving them day by day.

Eslabon Armado on Revitalizing Regional Mexican Music and Their Fast-Rising Chart Success

Mexican hitmakers Eslabon Armado reflect on their big year on the charts and reveal the family secret to their business endeavors.

Eslabon Armado

It’s been a record-breaking year for música Mexicana — the refashioned nickname given to the genre of regional Mexican music that, prior to these last few years, has remained relatively dormant in the mainstream American market. Leading its growing presence in the U.S. is a small pack of young inheritors of the folky countryside ballads of their parents and grandparents who have fused their heritage from both sides of the border to evolve the storied musical style — picking up thousands of new listeners in the process.

“We’re really lucky to be working with family — literally, with my mom as a manager and with a label like Del,” Pedro tells Variety . “I feel like had we signed with a Universal or Sony, I wouldn’t have the direct contact I have with [Del]. I can talk or call them up whenever I need them.”

Pedro’s mother Nelly had no prior managerial experience — or any music-industry experience, for that matter — before positioning herself at the forefront of her children’s careers. Her sons credit her business-minded approach to her intrinsic hustle. Before the boys became Nelly’s full-time job, she was in charge of collecting rent money for the six rooms she had commissioned out of their old home. She’s since gained a new level of notoriety, ensuring Eslabon gets the money they’re due and also handles day-to-day operations like counting in concert-goers and collecting tickets. Nelly was also the voice approval when it came time to field new members Pacheco and González into the group.

Adds Brian, “She’s super direct with all of us… even the promoters we work with are kind of scared of her in a way because she keeps everyone in check and makes sure we’re getting our fair share of the work. It’s been an incredibly beneficial aspect of what we do.”

A proud romantic, Tovar says he’s in no rush to be greedy with his fame. He credits the group’s success to the power of God and family and says he’s more than happy to have achieved this level of creative control at the ripe age of 21. “We try to stay consistent,” he says, responding to the unnerving question of the key to their evolution. “And not to depend on the song. Because after you get a No. 1, people expect more from you. I’m lucky to feel so grounded in what I’m doing and I just try to remind myself and everyone who surrounds me to keep level-minded about the quality of work [we’re] putting out. That’s the most crucial step in what we’ve managed to build so far.”

Still, being one of the very few leading groups of a growing genre can leave a lot of room for the unpredictable.

Shortly after the release of “Ella Baila Sola,” Pedro was quick to voice his concern over the lack of public credit he had received for the song — especially considering the featured artist on the track had gone on to perform it, sans Eslabon, on American late-night television as the first regional act to have ever claimed such a stage. Elsewhere, Eslabon’s peers, the Columbia Records-signed sibling trio of Yahritza y Su Esencia, natives of Washington State who recently received an unforeseeable amount of flack from the Mexican media after they opened up about the culture shock they experienced when visiting Mexico City for the first time. The topic has since brought up a conversation that has long plagued Mexican-American citizens for being “ni de aquí ni de allá ,” (neither here nor there) — in other words, not fully American or Mexican enough.

Eslabon is also gearing up to market itself to its massive fanbase in Mexico, where it hopes to spend the majority of 2024 touring. “I think a lot of people assume that we’re scared of going to Mexico and that’s why we haven’t toured or catered to our audiences there,” they say, “But there’s nothing to be scared of when the music we’re singing is, at its core, music about love.”

The group also got some inspiration from an unexpected source. Brian recently caught one of Taylor Swift’s massive “Eras Tour” stops at the SoFi Stadium, at first under obligation to his younger sister, though he quickly found himself envisioning and absorbing elements for an Eslabon set: “It was a 10/10 concert experience,” he says. “The costumes, the fans… and [most importantly], the songs are incredible.”

In recent weeks, the band put together their first showing in Los Angeles’ Crypto Arena for a one-night stop. Joined by a banda of more than 15 men dressed in matching silver suits, Eslabon Armado delivered one of their biggest headlining shows in the city with gusto. Flowery visuals were projected behind them, and Nelly would occasionally join the band onstage to chuck merchandise into the crowd of buzzing teenagers who had spent their evening lined up outside the arena.

“It was a total peda, ” Pedro says, referring to the total party that ensued inside the arena walls. “We have the best memories in Los Angeles — even before our careers blew up, we’ve felt very comfortable by the culture here. It’s the place to be when it comes to Mexican music and community. We have plans of building something similar for future shows and just keep growing what we have going on now.”

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Is moscow or st petersburg more beautiful.

Moscow and St Petersburg are two completely different cities and difficult to compare. Both are beautiful in their own way. Moscow’s sprawling cityscape reflects centuries of history in a mixture of architectural styles - gilded cupolas of medieval Russian churches merge with Stalinist monoliths and towering glass skyscrapers, and cobble-stone alleys balance grand boulevards. St Petersburg’s centre was laid out over a matter of decades, its regular and harmonious city plan lined with Neoclassicist, Art Nouveau and Baroque masterpieces, intersected with meandering canals. If you can’t choose between the two, check out our best combined Moscow and St Petersburg tours.

What is the best time to visit Moscow and St Petersburg?

A trip to St Petersburg or Moscow at any time of year will be enjoyable. Museums and galleries are much less busy during winter, accommodation is significantly cheaper, and you can enjoy outside activities such as skiing or sleigh rides. Exploring the cities is more enjoyable in the warmer months, and St Petersburg especially beckons during the White Nights. Whenever you decide to travel, check out which national holidays are on – Pancake Week, Victory Day, and City Day are just some of the festivities you can experience.
