Tobacco is an electronic musician hailing from Pennsylvania, United States. After coming to prominence as the frontman of the band Black Moth Super Rainbow, he began a solo career in 2008 and has since released three studio albums along with three extended plays.

Coming out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States in 2003, Black Moth Super Rainbow soon picked up a reputation for being one of the strangest bands in the world of indie rock. After five years spent plying their brand of deeply experimental folk-tronica their frontman, a man called Thomas Fec who performed under the name Tobacco, decided to embark on a solo career. Maybe supporting The Flaming Lips while playing songs called “When The Sun Grows On Your Toung” just wasn't weird enough for him. Fec retained the stage name Tobaccco for the release of his debut solo album “F*cked Up Friends” (we at Songkick put the asterisk in), which came out on Anticon in October 2008, and was immediately hailed as one of the best releases of the year by publications from Rolling Stone to Exclaim!.

Tobacco's stoner-rock-via-classic-hip-hop sound made him friends in a lot of high places, from Pitchfork premièring the lead single from his second album “Maniac Meat” to the same record featuring guest appearances from Beck himself on the tracks “Fresh Hex” and “Grape Aerosmith”. Clearly, any artist that can act as the link between such disparate artists as Beans, Aesop Rock, the aforementioned Beck and the makers of the HBO series Silicon Valley (who've used a number of his songs in the show) is something very special indeed. However, to achieve all that respect while playing music that is proudly experimental and genuinely esoteric? That's the sign of someone truly one of a kind. For that reason, Tobacco comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

I forgot how weird Tobacco was. Black Moth Super Rainbow seems downright accessible by comparison. The set began with a minutes-long clip of the Jerry Springer Show, featuring a cuckolded Taco Bell employee with a distinct Pittsburgh accent. The sound was alien, but that's not the weird part with Tobacco (or BMSR). The visuals projected onto the screen past the act were, on balance, bizarre. Grainy footage from strange, forgotten television programs. Vintage porn, girls blowing bubble gum bubbles, red and white static. The full length of the video for Streaker (Eric Wereheim) - really horrific. By the end of the set, you could be sure that only the weirdos were left listening to the music. But that isn't a bad thing. -- Tobacco makes great music. Tobacco is weird.

Good openers, great show. I've seen TOBACCO several times before, both solo and with BMSR. He always sounds awesome and puts on a dope show. I love the visuals he uses for his performances, an all around cool experience.

See What Our Customers Are Saying

It was excellent! So much better than we ever expected. The Tour Guide, Carolyn, was so much fun and very knowledgeable! I highly recommend it for everyone!

The Haunted Footsteps Ghost Tour was a wonderful tour that was lead by our hilarious guide, Carolyn. With 4 stops, just over a mile of walking, and lasting about an hour and a half, it was the perfect distance and duration. We didn’t feel too worn out after our tour and we were captivated by Carolyn’s incredible storytelling the whole time. Very fun and well worth the price, definitely recommend if you love ghosts and history! (Also to be clear, the is NOT a ghost hunting tour. You don’t go into any of the stops, it is simply learning about the history of local hauntings.)

Brad and Caroline were wonderful tour guides on this most informative City of Oaks Tour! Even though I’ve lived in the Triangle for 20 years I never knew the facts that I learned on this tour. I would highly recommend this tour and these great guides!

As a travel writer for STYLE Media this is an Excellent tour filled with history and intrigue. I took this tour in my off time & it’s one of the best I’ve ever attended. Well worth your time it’s a fun tour for an individual, family or group.

We had a wonderful experience with our fearless leader Brad guiding us through Raleigh! He was a wonderful storyteller, every story we felt as though we were living it. We left with just the right mix of ghost stories and history.

We had so much fun on the Haunted Pub Crawl. Brad was an awesome tour guide and we met lots of cool people from all around. Such a great experience!

We did the ghost tour. It was the best one I have ever been on, and I go on these tours everywhere I go!  The stories we’re very engaging and told very well, like a pro storyteller! In my wheelchair I was able to go everywhere the tour went.  Super fun!!

We went on our ghostly tour with our fantastic “Ghost Host”, Forrest. He was absolutely fantastic. His stories were engaging and theatrical without being too over the top. You can tell he has a real passion for his job and is more than willing to answer questions and give you other recommendations of haunted places around Raleigh and beyond. We’ve done 3 other tours with other companies this year and this was by far the best. We loved the mix of paranormal with Raleigh facts and information. Definitely would recommend Tobacco Road and look forward to other tours with them in the future.

Tobacco City is about simplicity. Simple songs and melodies built around nostalgic and blue stories. Built out of a mutual love of classic and cosmic country, the members of Tobacco City bring their psychedelic and folk influences to the exploding genre. The result is a feel good sway that fits into modern urban modes and passes by the shrewdest of classic country heads.

Quickly gaining traction in Chicago playing with new country icon Orville Peck and Psychedelic taste maker Ty Segall, Tobacco City seems to fit in wherever good music resides regardless of the genre.

\\\PRESS///

“Hailing from Chicago, the musical project of Chris Coleslaw and Lexi Goddard leans ably into traditional country blues and honky-tonk shuffles. With a forthcoming Tobacco City full-length on the horizon, the group has shared two new tracks; the first of which is the amber-hued “Blue Raspberry,” a languid, steel guitar draped duet that recalls Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons at their most incandescent. Hanging in the air and gleaming like a curtain drawn against the day, the B-side, “Never On My Mind,” finds Goddard front and center amidst a slow sashay of the prosaic. Another dollar for the juke after a long day’s work — drinking for one. words / c depasquale ”- AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

Makers of flavored tobacco are targeting our kids. WA needs to ban it

As our students head back to school, tobacco companies are targeting them with kid-friendly products that are more addictive than ever. Today’s e-cigarette devices, also known as vapes, come in thousands of fun flavors, deliver massive doses of nicotine and some even include built-in video games . And most — more than 6,000 products that can be found on shelves down the street from our schools — are being sold illegally. Nearly all e-cigarettes being used by kids are not authorized for sale in this country by the Food and Drug Administration.

In our state alone, approximately 10,000 kids will try cigarettes for the first time this year and thousands more will try e-cigarettes. Tobacco companies are strategically targeting kids and because of this relentless marketing, 89% of kids using electronic cigarettes are using flavored tobacco products. Nearly 11% of Washington high school students are current e-cigarette users. The minimum age to purchase tobacco and vapes is 21.

Many kids believe that because these products are fruit or mint-flavored, they’re less dangerous than cigarettes. But some electronic cigarettes contain more nicotine than 200 cigarettes. The average nicotine strength of these products has nearly tripled, and the average e-liquid capacity has increased fivefold in recent years.

This is why the Association of Washington Principals is calling on the Legislature to end the sale of flavored tobacco and help prevent a new generation of kids from becoming addicted to nicotine.

Due to declining sales in combustible cigarettes, the tobacco industry needed to pivot and find new customers. Products like electronic cigarettes and nicotine pouches, like Zyn, are creating lifelong customers. To increase profits, they are targeting kids and our Black, Latino and LBGTQ+ communities.

Decades ago, the tobacco industry developed menthol cigarettes as a means of more gently introducing new consumers to nicotine. Menthol’s cooling characteristics and minty flavor make it easier to start smoking and much harder to quit. Now, half of all teenagers begin smoking with menthols, and 85% of Black smokers smoke menthol cigarettes. This leads to disparities in tobacco-related death and disease in the Black communities.

Now, with cotton candy, watermelon and other kid-friendly flavors, companies have made it easier to become addicted than ever before. And the kids who use them are only getting younger and younger. We see even our youngest students, in elementary schools, vaping.

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that nicotine can have damaging effects on adolescent brain development, particularly the parts of the brain responsible for attention, learning, mood and impulse control. Our educators are witnessing these impacts in real time. The rampant use of e-cigarettes is also creating infrastructure issues and causing us to close bathrooms in some schools, so kids don’t have a place to smoke. Students tell us they avoid the bathrooms altogether. Teachers witness students struggling to make it through one class without needing a puff of their vape.

AWSP urges legislators to hear our concerns and stop the industry’s relentless targeting of our students by ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products in our state.

Our schools should be safe areas for our kids to learn and grow. We are witnessing history repeat itself with the tobacco industry’s marketing playbook of attracting and addicting kids to deadly products. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in this country. Our educators and school staff should not be alone in tackling this crisis. We need the Washington Legislature to act now.

A Deep Dig Into Perique: One of the Rarest Tobaccos in the World

tobacco tour

Copyright: Boone Clemmons, Seersucker Studios – Perique Tobacco – St. James Parish, Louisiana

An almost-extinct tobacco now shines as one of Louisiana River Parishes’ most precious gems.

By: Amanda Ogle

In St. James Parish, between the levee and the cane fields, a special tobacco with a rich history grows deep. The tobacco, known as perique, can only be found in St. James Parish, and is one of the rarest commercially grown tobaccos in the world.

Perique grows exclusively in St. James Parish because of breaks in the river levees that have enriched the sediment in the soil over the years. Today, there are only about 25 perique growers in St. James Parish, a small number in theory, but a rather welcome one when you consider the tobacco was once on the verge of extinction.

Historically, the Choctaws and Chickasaws of Louisiana are recognized as having fermented tobacco leaves in hollowed-out tree trunks more than 1,000 years ago. They would layer the tobacco leaves in the tree trunks, then lay heavy stones on top to start the fermentation process. This technique was acquired by Louisianan settlers in the 18 th or 19 th century and further developed. Pierre Chenet, an Acadian settler to the area in the early 1800s, adapted the process and began using wooden boxes for fermentation. In the 1900s, there were three processors of perique: the Roussels, who industrialized perique by fermenting it in whiskey barrels before stopping production around 1950; the Guglielmo’s , who closed up shop in the late ‘70s; and the Poches, who started in 1917. In 2005, Mark Ryan of Daughters and Ryan Tobacco in North Carolina purchased L.A. Poche Perique Tobacco in Convent, Louisiana from the Poche family. By this time, perique was pretty much nonexistent, and had been forgotten about by many. “After I bought the place, I went down the road to Jimmy’s Place to buy some po’boys for my workers. I mentioned the L.A. Poche perique factory, and the people there didn’t know what it was,” says Ryan. “And it was only a mile away.”

The decline in perique was due to its labor-intensive harvesting. During the hot summer months, workers use sugar cane knives to cut perique plants at the stalk. The stalks are then hung on a wire at the curing barn, where they’re air cured. Every single leaf has its stem removed by hand, then bundles of the leaves are tied together, put in whiskey barrels, and pressurized and fermented. “For the first few months, you can see bubbles and foam from fermentation,” notes Ryan.

The perique stays in the barrels for a minimum of a year before it’s ready to sell, and during that time in the barrel, the leaves are taken out at least three times and aired out and turned by hand before being returned and re-pressurized in the barrels. “It’s a long process, but that’s how you get those complex, spicy, rich flavors,” says Ryan.

You can find perique cigars available in numerous locations in Louisiana’s River Parishes, including at Matherne’s Supermarket on LA-3125 in Paulina, and at the annual Drew Estate Barn Smoker event held at L.A. Poche Perique Tobacco farm in Convent.
