Summer Holidays > Kayaking > Self-guided Sea Kayaking in the Stockholm Archipelago

Description », maximum flexibility and convenience to discover the beauty of the stockholm archipelago.

It's hard to imagine a better landscape to explore by sea kayak than the Stockholm Archipelago, with its tens of thousands of islands, rocks and skerries.

Less than an hour's ride by public transport or transfer from Stockholm city brings you to a different world - a world of forested islands rich in wildlife and cultural heritage, small inlets thick with sea grass, smooth rocks perfect for sunbathing, sheltered bays and beaches just made for swimming and relaxing. Further out, the archipelago changes again, with the trees giving way to a landscape of barer islands and wide horizons.

Kayaks for your tour

Beginner or experienced paddler, the Archipelago is waiting for you

Self-guided Sea Kayaking in the Stockholm Archipelago gives you the chance to explore this unique outdoor world for yourself - whether you are a complete novice or an experienced paddler. There is great flexibility to vary the route you will take to maximise your enjoyment based on your level of experience and fitness, and of course on wind and weather conditions at the time.

Novice paddlers will enjoy exploring the more sheltered areas as they gain confidence and experience on the water. The tour is also suitable for families (min. age 12), offering a perfect introduction to sea kayaking for all levels.

More experienced kayakers may wish to choose longer tours and to venture further into the archipelago. With flexible start days between May and September and durations from 3-8 or more days, this is a tour that can truly be suitable for all!

However you choose to enjoy the adventure, you will be camping wild each night with the high quality equipment provided. Despite its proximity to Stockholm city, the Stockholm Archipelago is a tranquil and very beautiful area, and travelling by sea kayak gives you the chance to explore where few others can. You may well find yourself camping on your own private island!

Itinerary »

Option 1: standard self-guided package.

Start/end points: There are two possible start/end points for these tours - Sollenkroka or Stavsnäs (45-60 mins from Stockholm city by public transport). You can choose to start/end at the same location or do a point-to-point tour (a supplement applies for point-to-point itineraries for this option - see under "Prices" for details). Please note the following:

  • Both locations offer wonderful kayaking, whether starting/ending at the same location or choosing a point-to-point route.
  • However, any of the combinations are possible and offer flexible kayaking with the possibility to vary your route depending on wind and weather conditions.
  • Please specify your start point and end point on booking.

You will normally need to overnight in Stockholm before your tour (and also after depending on your end time), which is in any a popular option and it is well worth adding a couple of days to your trip to explore the city. However, if you wish to arrive Stockholm on the start day of your kayak tour, this may be possible by arrangement - please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Arrive at the kayak centre by public transport between 09.00 and 12.00.

Later arrival times up to around 15.30 may also be possible on request, but must be advised and confirmed in advance.

Following Days:

See Suggested Itinerary below for information on possible routes and places to visit. You will also discuss the best options depending on wind/weather conditions, your ability and the type of tour you are looking for at the kayak centre at the start of your trip.

Your final day of kayaking. Please be back at the kayak centre at your chosen end point by latest 16.00-16.30 to return your equipment before the centre closes at 17.00. If you arrive earlier in the afternoon and there is time before your departure, you are welcome to make use of the showers and sauna at the kayak centre (these facilities are only available when ending your tour at Stavsnäs - there are no shower or sauna facilities at Sollenkroka).

Option 2: Full Service Self-guided Package

NB: You will normally need to overnight in Stockholm before and after your tour, which is in any a popular option and it is well worth adding a couple of days to your trip to explore the city. However, if you wish to arrive/depart Stockholm on the start/end day of your kayak tour, this may be possible by arrangement - please let us know in advance if you would like transfers at other times than those below.

Start/end points: Start point will be Stavsnäs, unless weather conditions are unsuitable in which case tours will start from Sollenkroka. The start point cannot be specified in advance and will be chosen to offer the best possible experience for you depending on wind and weather conditions at the time. You will discuss best options on arrival.

Point-to-point tours: You can also if you wish choose a "point-to-point" tour for this option at no additional charge. Point-to-point tours will start at Stavsnäs (unless weather conditions are unsuitable) and end at Sollenkroka and require minimum duration 4 days/3 nights.

If you have added transfer as an optional extra, pick-up is from fixed location - Hotel Downtown Camper in central Stockholm - for transfer (45-60 mins) to the start point. Transfer normally leaves Stockholm 09.15 on start day, but later transfer times may be possible by arrangement for guests arriving in Stockholm that day. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Alternatively, travel independently to the kayak centre as for Option 1 tours.

On arrival at the kayak centre, you will be met for Swedish "fika" (coffee and snacks) and a thorough introductory meeting for the tour ahead, including help preparing and packing the kayaks. You will have a chance to discuss suggested routes in detail and to ask any questions you may have.

You will have a detailed introduction for your trip, typically taking around 2-3 hours and covering kayak techniques appropriate to your level, safety considerations and navigation.

Your final day of kayaking. Please be back at the kayak centre by 16.00. The kayak centre staff will take care of your equipment while you take a coffee and snack and organise for departure. If there is time before departure, you are welcome to make use of the showers and sauna at the kayak centre (these facilities are only available when ending your tour at Stavsnäs - there are no shower or sauna facilities at Sollenkroka). If you have added transfer as an optional extra, transfer will normally be back in Stockholm city around 17.00-18.00. Transfer can be to any location in central Stockholm (hotel accommodation, train station, etc) by arrangement.

Suggested Itinerary: For Option 1 or Option 2 tours

The itinerary below is a very general indication of areas you may wish to explore during your trip, based on an 8-day tour. Kayaking in the archipelago is very flexible and your exact route will depend on a number of factors, including your start/end point, wind/weather conditions, your kayaking ability and level of fitness, and the type of trip you are looking for (for example if you have a particular interest in wildlife or cultural elements). You will discuss options with the kayak centre staff in detail before beginning your tour to ensure you have the best possible experience.

Each night of the tour you will be camping wild in the archipelago in accordance with the Swedish Right of Public Access. Detailed information on this, including dealing with toilet waste, etc, will be provided in your booking documentation and in the information meeting at the start of your tour.

Day 2: Bullerö

A beautiful area with a nature reserve rich in birdlife. Ideal for a half-day visit, including time to hike on the island and perhaps visit the old hunting lodge of Bruno Liljefors, with a wonderful collection of Swedish art from the early 1900s. There is also a public sauna on the island here if you wish to soothe your muscles!

Day 3: Möja

With a lovely nature reserve to the east of the main island, Möja is well worth a visit. The village of Berg offers a good place to buy extra groceries and refill your drinking water containers if needed,

The nature reserve is made up of many small islands and is ideal to discover by kayak. There is plenty to see and do here, so you might like to take two days to explore!

For longer tours, there is great flexibility to explore as much or as little of the archipelago as you wish. Just make sure you plan time to get to your end point in the time available! Bear in mind that wind and weather conditions can make progress slower or require a change of plan, so you should always have some extra time in your planned itinerary for contingencies.

Some ideas you may wish to include are:

  • Långviksskär nature reserve: hundreds of islands in the eastern archipelago, with beautiful views and wide horizons.
  • In good conditions and with suitable confidence/experience, you may be able to get to the island of Tärnskär, with its beautiful lagoon.
  • Nämdö: A larger island to the south of Runmarö which is very popular with Stockholmers in summer. There is a good restaurant at Solvik as well as cafes. There is a public sauna here at Låvik and good hiking trails if you'd like to take some time to explore off the water.
  • Relaxing and swimming: An outdoor adventure isn't just about travelling and doing things all the time! The archipelago is a wonderful playground for simply enjoying being outdoors - in summer the water is often around 20 degrees C or warmer, perfect for swimming, and there are many smooth rocks and small beaches which offer wonderful spots to simply laze about for a day (or even two!).

Good To Know »

Health requirements/experience:.

All participants must be able to swim at least 200m. Max. weight 120kg. No previous kayak experience is required - see under "Itinerary" for information on which tour option may suit you best depending your previous experience.

Participants with limited kayaking experience may wish to choose "Option 2: Full Service", which includes additional instruction.

Min. age 12 years (sharing double kayak with adult and provided children have suitable size and strength to use the paddle). Min. age 15 years to paddle single kayak (provided children have suitable size and strength to paddle effectively in a headwind).

You should be generally used to and enjoy the outdoors and camping.

What makes this "Easy-Medium"?

The tours are very flexible both in terms of duration and route taken. If you choose to start/end your tour at the same location, there is no requirement to cover a minimum distance (for point-to-point tours, min. tour duration 4 days/3 nights is required).

The itinerary can be varied to increase or decrease level of challenge depending on level of experience and fitness and you will discuss the most suitable options in detail at the start of your tour.

Double kayaks are available for both tour options, which are very stable and ideal for beginners. Single kayaks can also be chosen for more confident paddles (particularly stable single kayaks are also available for beginners).

There are no tides or currents in the archipelago, and during the summer the water is typically warm (around 20 degrees C or so). In windy conditions, the water can be choppy. You should always be prepared to adapt your itinerary accordingly to paddle in the most sheltered areas where appropriate, and should avoid crossing large bodies of open water, particularly in strong winds.

You will be wild camping on all nights. High quality camping equipoment is provided. For Option 2 tours, a 24/7 helpline in case of questions or difficulties is also included.

NB: Perception of difficulty is very subjective. What is hard to one person may be easy for another and vice versa, depending on factors including level of fitness, age and previous experience. Weather conditions/temperatures can also dramatically affect the actual level of challenge encountered.

Ticks and TBE:

Note: Ticks occur mostly in grassy areas.

As in the UK and other areas, there are ticks in the Nordic forests which can carry diseases such as Borrelia. You should check for ticks at the end of a day in the outdoors. If you find a tick, remove it as soon as possible by pulling the tick out straight, carefully and slowly, with the tweezers as close to the skin as possible. Ensure that you do not leave any of the insect's mouth parts attached to your skin. Wash the bite area with soap and water. In the unlikely event that you feel unwell or notice anything unusual around the area of the bite in the coming days, consult your doctor.

As in large areas of mainland Europe, in some localised areas of the Nordic countries, the ticks are known to carry TBE, or Tick-borne encephalitis, and locals spending extended periods in affected areas often choose to vaccinate themselves. For current advice on TBE and inoculations for the area you are visiting, please consult your doctor or see Travel Health Pro .

Equipment/clothes needed:

For information on any equipment and/or clothing included as standard for this experience, please see under "What's Included".

A detailed recommended packing list for personal items to bring will be sent with your booking documentation.

NB: We advise you not to buy equipment or clothes for your trip or to incur other non-refundable expenses such as flights until you have received confirmation of your booking from us in writing. Note of course that the most appropriate clothing to use as well as the level of challenge experienced during any outdoor activity may vary significantly depending on factors such as the time of year and the particular weather/temperature conditions during your trip.

Preparing for your trip:

For further reading, we also have a number of general information articles to get you ready for your trip, covering a wide variety of topics from what to do on a city break before/after your tour, advice on packing, eyewear for winter and considerations for female travellers.

The best way to explore and experience the Swedish archipelago is on the ocean. We offer guided archipelago tours with kayak or paddelboard in what is considered to be one of the last great wilderness and a paddling paradise.

We also offer guided national park paddling tours with kayak in the Swedish marine national park Kosterhavet . This area is full of life above and underneath the surface with over 6000 different marine seaweeds and animals.

If you have previous kayak experience we recommend that you do a self guided camping tour during the summer when the water is warm. We offer kayaks, tent, camping equipment and suggestions of tours according to your level of experience and the weather forecast.

Beach cleanups

Our cleanup work started 2014 and year 2016 was the year when we started to measure and count how much garbage we collected. As we can tell by our own statistics it is less and less garbage to collect every year on the places we return to. We believe the reason to be that we have cleaned a old garbage that has been here for a long time and once it is gone it is only the new garbage we need to collect. Old plastic is very fragile and you can tell it has been there for a long time.

2016 – 1018 kg garbage = 48 garbage bags 2017 – 3618 kg garbage = 202 garbage bags 2018 –  8532 kg garbage = 702 garbage bags 2019 – 6062 kg garbage = 433 garbage bags 2020 –  3780 kg garbage = 270 garbage bags 2021 – 3146 kg garbage = 226 garbage bags 2023  – 3660 kg garbage = 305 garbage bags 2024 – …

Up until year 2024 we have collected about 33 356 kg waste i.e. more than 33 tons of garbage, 2 780 bags to be precise. This is equivalent to at least 278 000 litre of waste- a bathtub contains 150 litre. This means that we have collected more than 1 853 bathtubs with ocean debris.

We also arrange public beach cleanups   that you can join or if you would like to arrange a cleanup with your friends or organization you can use the online map www.strandstädarkartan.se to register what and where you have been and get help to collect your bags if you wish to. The best kayak and canoe tours in Sweden

With its many rivers, lakes, archipelagos and long coastline, Sweden is a kayaker’s paradise. Paddling about in a kayak or canoe is a great way to see the local landscape, spot wildlife and explore uninhabited islands and otherwise-inaccessible areas.

Sweden is a great place for kayaking

And you don’t have to be superfit either – or set a gruelling pace. Many kayakers chose to just drift along slowly, watching the world go by and enjoying the peace and quiet.

Kayaking in Sweden is the ideal activity for families too, as kids love the independence of having their own boat and being able to go at their own speed.

So where is best for kayaking in Sweden?

Sweden has loads of different options for kayaking from hardcore canoe and camping in the Arctic Circle, to canoeing along wild rivers in Lapland or gentle paddling around the watery cities of Stockholm and Gothenburg.

In the south, the province of Skåne is relatively flat with plenty of rivers and lakes, and a long gentle coastline. The rivers here wend through wooded landscapes and marshlands, ideal landscapes for birdwatching.

Sea kayaking is very popular along Sweden’s west coast, home to the Gothenburg Archipelago and the Bohuslän coast. With some 8000 islands and inlets to explore (many uninhabited), plus pretty fishing villages and sandy beaches and jettys to swim from, this region is excellent for kayaking.

In Swedish Lapland, right up in the Arctic Circle, you can head out into the wilderness by canoe on huge lakes and wild rivers surrounded miles of pristine forests.

With 8000 islands, the Bohuslän coast is Sweden is ideal for canoeing

And even in the capital Stockholm, you can take to the water. It’s a great way to see the city’s sights on a gentle paddle round the urban waterways, or head out into the archipelago and explore some of the 30,000 islands that make up the Stockholm archipelago.

Which is the best type of canoe tour in Sweden?

There are loads of different types of canoe and kayak tour in Sweden – it’s a popular sport! Options range from an afternoon pootling about on a city river, to a full-scale week-long expedition camping overnight on deserted islands in a remote archipelago. So, you can pretty much choose whichever type you fancy.

Explore Sweden on a guided kayak tour

If you want to explore a more remote area, you can opt for a fully organized expedition, which involves several days of travelling by kayak and camping under the stars at night. These tend to be in small groups, with an experienced guide who shows you the best route and helps set up camp and cook at each overnight stop.

Alternatively, if you’re a confident kayaker in a less remote area, you may want to go for a self-guided kayak tour, where all the equipment is provided and you set off on your own with a map and your gear.

When is the best time to go kayaking in Sweden?

Well, summer is the obvious time to go, when the weather is better, the water warmer and the days are long. In the north of the country, you can still be paddling in daylight at midnight in June and July. The downside is that the waterways tend to be busier and the midges and mosquitos can be worse in summer.

Summer is the best time to go kayaking in Sweden

If you’re heading to the south of Sweden, autumn and spring can be lovely times to go kayaking – provided you’ve got the right equipment. You may well have the waterways to yourself and the colours of the leaves in autumn are stunning.

Kayaking in winter is possible, particularly along the more sheltered west coast, but this is usually for experienced paddlers only, and will involve staying in a B&B, rather than camping. You’ll also need to have the full kit, including cold weather drysuits.

Five of the best kayak and canoe tours in Sweden

Stockholm city by kayak.

Get a unique perspective of Stockholm’s main sights, including the city hall and old town, by seeing it from the water. Suitable for everyone from complete beginners upwards, this two-hour guided tour takes you round the city’s canals and central islands.

You can either go it alone in your own kayak, or paddle with a friend in a two-man canoe – all equipment is provided.

Explore the Stockholm archipelago by kayak

And if you’ve got a weekend to spare, you’d be mad not to head out out the city and explore the archipelago by kayak. This overnight camping kayak trip starts from the village of Dalarö, just 45 minutes from the centre of Stockholm – but feels like it’s a million miles from the urban bustle.

You’ll paddle through the waters of the Baltic Sea, cooking lunch and dinner on a campfire then bed down for the night on a remote island.

The Stockholm archipelago is easily explored by kayak

The best of Bohuslän by kayak

This four-day (three-night) self-guided kayak tour heads out along the Bohuslän coast to explore the Fjällbacka archipelago, with its pretty islands, sandy beaches and quaint fishing communities.

You’ll be picked up from Gothenburg, then kitted out with everything you need to explore this beautiful corner of the west coast, including maps, tent, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, food and, of course, a kayak. You can choose where you set up camp each night, so simply head out on the water and get paddling.

Wilderness kayaking in Swedish Lapland

This amazing guided five-day kayak tour starts in Jokkmokk in the Arctic Circle, and explores the pristine wilderness of the Pearl River Nature Reserve. You’ll camp on the shores of Lake Karats each night (and may well catch your dinner in its waters), surrounded by vast uninhabited forests with no road access.

Take a self-guided or organised kayak tour in Sweden

Do-it-yourself kayak tours in Skåne

Lake Ivösjön, Skåne’s largest lake, is home to Wetlandi , which rents out canoes and all the kit you need to head out onto the water and camp on a deserted island like Robinson Crusoe. Canoes, life jackets and maps are provided, and they also rent out camping and cooking equipment and barbecue packages – or you can bring your own gear and food.

This lush, peaceful landscape is perfect for paddling around with more than 40 islands (many uninhabited) and plenty of secluded beaches and inlets, where you can escape the crowds and set up camp.

Our guide to kayaking in Sweden

Kayaking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Sweden, and it is easy to see why. With thousands of lakes and mile after mile of coast to kayak and wild camp, Sweden is quickly rising to the top of kayak destinations in Europe. In fact, if you are looking for a kayak holiday in Europe, you have found the right place to go.

At the Kayak Trail we specialize in a very specific type of scandinavian outdoor adventure: kayak in the unique Swedish archipelago nature. If you want to explore our tours, you can click here or if you want to know more about kayaking in Sweden, feel free to continue to read our guide below or contact us directly and we’d be happy to help you plan your kayak tour to Sweden.

Why kayak in Sweden?

There are several reasons that outdoor people and kayakers from all over Europe and the world come to kayak in Sweden. Here are three reasons kayaking in Sweden is one of the best outdoor holidays to enjoy in Europe:

  • Unique archipelago nature . Kayaking in the typical archipelagos such as Stockholm archipelago is truly unique, with thousands of islands to discover. When kayaking in Stockholm archipelago you have about 30 000 island in a maze. Here we have gathered some more information about kayaking in Stockholm archipelago .
  • The right to roam gives you freedom . Kayaking in Sweden and wild camping is much easier than in many parts of the world, since Sweden has the right of public access. This means you are allowed to camp on private land, as long as you are not to close to dwellings, you do not disturb and you do not harm nature. Read more about traceless travel policy and our work for sustainability here .
  • The Stockholm Kayak Trail. Kayak the Stockholm Kayak Trail to explore Sweden’s largest archipelago. Kayak the best routes, the best places to visit and the most beautiful campsites. In Sweden we love the outdoor but we are not always so good at making it accessible. The Stockholm Kayak Trail is an exception, and we are proud to be the Exclusive Tour Operator for Stockholm Kayak Trail . Check out more about kayaking the Stockholm Kayak Trail here .

What is the best place to kayak in Sweden?

When kayaking in Sweden you have the luxury of choosing between many different beautiful kayak routes in the many archipelagos, on lakes and along the coast. At the Kayak Trail, we love to kayak in the archipelago type of nature, and thus we will rate a few of our favorite archipelago places to kayak in Sweden below.

Our top 3 best places to kayak in Sweden

1. kayak stockholm archipelago in stockholm.

There are several reasons to why we believe that Stockholm archipelago is the best place for kayaking in Sweden , and frankly, these same reasons are why we chose to locate The Kayak Trail here. It is the largest archipelago to kayak in Sweden with some 30 000 islands to discover (and second largest in the world). With it’s many areas to discover by kayak you can find  calm and sheltered kayaking for the leisure focused kayak trip, or  more challenging kayak routes.

You also find many small picturesque villages and harbours where you can replenish food and experience local culture, and there are countless of nature reserves where the kayak is just the right vessel to discover the many small islands.

Oh, and one more reason we think that Stockholm archipelago is the best place to kayak in Sweden is that Stockholm city is conveniently close and easy to get to by train, plane, bus, car or boat. Why not stay an extra day and discover what Stockholm City has to offer?  If you are keen on exploring options for kayaking in Stockholm archipelago, check out our kayak tour options or reach out to us !

2. St. Anna Archipelago outside of Norrköping

If you have already kayaked in Stockholm archipelago a few times (there are many different areas to see there) this small and beautiful archipelago is a hidden gem that might be what you are looking for, very popular among swedes who kayak. It is rather hard to get to unless you have your own car, but beautiful and remote .

For the more adventure savvy who does not need any infrastructure, this could be your next tour. Although The Kayak Trail does not have any services in St. Anna, please contact us if you need advice on kayaking here, we’d be happy to help!

3. Öregrund and Gräsö archipelago west of Uppsala

Perhaps the least known and most rewarding place to go on a kayak tour. Loved by the kayak community in Stockholm, this is similarly to St. Anna archipelago a small and lush archipelago with little infrastructure and plenty of nature. If going kayaking here, bring everything you need, because after leaving the fishing village of Öregrund, there is no more civilization. If you have your own car, you can park it and rent kayaks and gear the one of the local rental services on the small islands. Let us know if you want to know more through our contact form.

Kayak tours in Sweden: different kayak tour options

In Sweden, there are some typical kayak tours to choose from when you plan your kayak trip here. Kayak tours in Stockholm for example are often either offered as a self-guided kayak tour, a guided kayak tour, a special kayak tour or a kayak rental or kayak hire. We offer some of these kayak tours, but we will go through all of the different kayak trips for your convenience.

Self guided kayak & wild camp tours are typically kayak tours where everything you need for your kayak trip is included. At the Kayak trail, for example, all kayak gear and comfortable camping equipment is included, you can order a food package, return transfer to/from Stockholm city is included and you have your own guide to give you a proper 2-3 hour introduction before you set out on your trip. We make sure you have everything you need to go out and explore. You also get a 24/7 phone number to a guide-on-call if you need support during the trip. All you need to do is to book the self-guided kayak tour, and we take care of the rest! Check out our self-guided kayak tours here .

Guided kayak & wild camp tours are kayak tours in which the guide goes with you and shows you the most beautiful parts of the archipelago. At the Kayak Trail, a guided kayak trip is always led by a certified kayak guide and is an all-inclusive kayak trip experience. The Guide will tailor the kayak tour according to your preferences and the weather conditions to make sure you get as much value out of your kayak trip as possible. Check out our guided kayak trips here .

Special guided kayak tours are kayak tours that have certain themes or are packaged together with accommodations and/or restaurants in the archipelago. If you have checked out our Grinda package, the Sandhamn package or the 3-day culinary package , these are examples of special guided kayak tours.

Kayak rental in Sweden

In Sweden, kayak rentals offer kayaks and canoes for hire together with some safety equipment and sometimes also outdoor equipment. The standards can vary a lot, so make sure to check ratings and/or to give the operator a call beforehand so that you get a feeling for the place. Make sure that you always get the safety equipment you should have, and that the staff go through safety procedures with you. We only offer self-guided, guided and special guided kayak tours. If you are not looking for a self guided kayak tour or a guided kayak tour, we can recommend the kayak rental Get Out Kayak . They have award winning service and offer rental services in the best parts of Stockholm archipelago.

When is the best time to kayak in Sweden?

When you choose which time to go kayak in Sweden you have to first look to yourself and ask: what type of kayak holiday or kayak trip are you looking for? If you are looking for a peak-summer kayak holiday you are best off going in mid to end july, however the archipleago will be more crowded then. If you are looking for a kayak trip in Sweden because you wish to find solitude in nature, then perhaps mid June or end of august when the Swedes have gone back to work is better for you. We have collected some information about when to go kayak in Sweden right here .
