Whale of a Time

Christ Church Cathedral. Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

A stroll through town will bring you face to face with the Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch. In fact, it's kind of hard to miss this towering memorial: It was built from the jawbones of two blue whales in 1933 to commemorate 100 years of British administration in the Falklands. It stands tall outside of the most southerly Anglican cathedral in the world. Consecrated in 1892, it features beautiful stained-glass windows, a pipe organ that came all the way from Ireland, and a working bell tower.

History and the Islands

Falkland Island, Stanley (aka Port Stanley). Falkland Islands Museum.

One can't-miss spot is the Historic Dockyard Museum, where you can learn all about the history of the Falkland Islands. And we mean all of it! Featuring exhibits about maritime history, the natural environment, and past and present life for native Falklanders, this is an educational visit. Plus, the buildings that make up the museum complex are some of the oldest in Port Stanley, dating back to the 1840s.

Curved sandy beach of Gypsy Cove in the Falkland Islands.

Walk Among Penguins

While you're in Port Stanley, you will definitely want to visit the coast. Hop on a shuttle to Gypsy Cove and enjoy a long walk to spot penguins, dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds like albatrosses and petrels. If you're interested in learning more about the island's history, you can carry on walking to Ordnance Point, where a mounted gun from World War II still stands.

Fish and Chips are a quintessential British food, and you can find many a chip shop in Port Stanley.

LOCAL CUISINE

When you visit the Falkland Islands, odds are you'll end up at a pub or a fish and chip shop. Port Stanley is heavily influenced by British culture, and you'll find some tasty British fare here. But if you're looking for something unique, you have to enjoy a Daily Smoko. This term originally meant a smoke break in the British Merchant Navy but refers to afternoon tea in the Falkland Islands.

Port Stanley is small, but there are many great souvenir shops around the island.

If you're looking for a souvenir to bring home, there are a few great things to pick up. For anyone who is interested in crafts or loves to knit, wool yarn is a great choice, or you can find some beautiful jewelry made from the islands' semi-precious pebbles. And if you're shopping for your kids, you have a lot of penguin-themed souvenirs to choose from.

Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica Expedition Cruise

The most epic wildlife expedition

This epic expedition cruise combines the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula into a voyage full of exciting highlights. The Falkland Islands and South Georgia hold some of the most stunning sights in the world. Nesting albatrosses, enormous king penguins colonies, fur seals, whales, elephant seals and even leopard seals, the abundance of wildlife is simply breathtaking.

You will explore the Antarctic Peninsula, the most accessible and wildlife-rich part of Antarctica. With deep bays and fjords where massive glaciers flank a rugged spine of snow-capped mountains. Scattered along the coast are icebergs in every shade of blue you can imagine. Sometimes with a seal, basking in the sun, or penguins seeking a safe haven from leopard seals. With some luck, you may also encounter ocean giants like humpback whales or orca’s!

Quote Image

South Georgia is among the remotest islands on the planet. Sailing along the rugged coast you feel like you have gone back in time, to when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Narrow sheltered waterways and fjords, spectacular mountains rising directly from the sea, icebergs and active glaciers, and in the valleys, enormous penguin rookeries. Words can’t describe the beauty of South Georgia.

south america cruise including falklands

Every expedition is different and plans have to be changed often when you are dealing with weather and wildlife in remote locations like Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Below itinerary is only an example, we cannot guarantee any specific sightings or landings. The expedition team on board will do their utmost to provide the best possible experience. Please note that some expeditions might be executed in reverse order, starting from Ushuaia to Antarctica, following South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and back to Ushuaia.

Day 1 & 2 - Start of your expedition

Your expedition starts in Ushuaia, Argentina. Embarkation takes place in the late afternoon and once you get settled in your cabin, the voyage can begin! Sailing towards the Falkland Islands, you will quickly start seeing seabirds behind the ship. It’s always nice to spend some time out on deck with your binoculars, trying to identify the albatros and petrels. If you prefer to stay inside, you can join the whale watchers on the bridge, or just relax and read an interesting book from the library.

Day 3-5 - Falkland Islands

You likely arrive at the Falklands in the morning on day 3. Before the first landing, you will be given guidelines for keeping a safe distance to the wildlife. The animals are very approachable, but we must always remain at an appropriate distance. Most famous are the penguins, including Magellanic, Gentoo, Rockhopper and King Penguin. But you’re also likely to see albatrosses, shearwaters, petrels, striated caracaras, Falkland steamer ducks and Cobb’s wrens. The last two being endemic to the Falklands. Not only are there more than 200 bird species on the islands, you are likely to see the Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins. You may visit some of the following exciting places, if weather conditions and time allow:

Carcass Island offers a nice hike, starting at the right side of the bay where you can already see gentoo and the magellanic penguins. Along the way, you might see brown skuas, uppland geese, tussac birds and a striated caracara. The walk takes you across the island to the settlement where you might be welcomed with tea and biscuits.

On Saunders Island, four out of five penguin species can be found! Follow the trail across the island, passing by different gentoo rookeries, until you arrive at the beautifull beach on the other side. You are likely to see king penguis here. They are so elegent and incredibly photogenic, especially with the beach and blue ocean as a backdrop! Make sure to also have a look on the rocky cliff at the end of the beach. You might see some rockhoppers, nesting on a cliff together with black browed albatrosses.

The capital, Port Stanley , is the cultural heart of the Falklands. You’ll find Victorian buildings, red telephone boxes, well maintained gardens, and English pubs. It feels like you are in a Britsh coastal village, even though you’re at the end of the earth. The museum about the history of the Falklands is definitely worth visiting.

The southern islands of the Falklands are a haven for birders. You might get the rare chance to visit George Island or Barren Island where you will find over 40 bird species. Among them, 650 pairs of southern giant petrels.

south america cruise including falklands

Day 6 & 7 - At Sea

You will be at sea once more, en route to your next destination: South Georgia. When leaving the Falklands, make sure to keep an eye out for dolphins and whales. Albatros and giant petrels are likely to follow the ship, you might even spot a huge wandering albatros.

Meanwhile, the expedition team will continue the lecture programme and starts preparing you for the first landing in South Georgia. This includes cleaning all your epxedition gear and clothing to eleminate any possible bio contamination.

Day 8-11 - South Georgia

South Georgia lies wholly within the Antarctic Convergence, making the weather very unpredictable. Therfor, no landings or visits can be guaranteed. Over the next days, the expedition will attempt landings and zodiac cruises along the magnificent shores of South Georgia, if conditions allow. A selection of the exciting places you may visit:

Originally a Norwegian sealing and whaling station, Grytviken was finally abandoned in 1965. Here we must be careful to avoid stepping on sleeping elephant seals when exploring the ruins of factory buildings. Reminders of early explorers bring history to life. Sir Ernest Shackleton was laid to rest at Grytviken and you might be able to visit the cross his men erected in his memory looking out across the beautiful bay.

The sandy black beach of St. Andrews Bay is a resting place for hundreds of elephant seals that haul out on the shore to moult. Behind the beach, the sight and sound of tens of thousands of King penguins at different stages of their breeding cycle will be overwhelming. The glacial river that runs into the sea here will be lined with penguins and elephant seal pups testing their aquatic skills. If you lift our gaze from the wildlife for a moment, you will glimpse the snow-capped peaks of some of the world’s most spectacular mountains.

Imagine indented bays lined with bleached whale bones, teeming with fur seals and with penguins just ‘hanging about’. At Godthul , you might have the opportunity to clamber through the tussock to a spectacular plateau offering magnificent views across the island and the waters beyond. A careful descent leads to a magnificent Macaroni penguin rookery.

south america cruise including falklands

Day 12-14 | Sailing South

It’s time to head south. The further we get, the more icebergs will appear on the horizon. A peculiar sight, like giant white islands in the distance. Conditions permitting, you might visit Orcadas Base at the South Orkney Islands. Situated in a bay with giant glaciers on either side, landing here is not always possible. If a visit or zodiac cruise isn’t possible, you may instead sail to Coronation Island.

There’s never a dull moment on an expedition cruise, even while at sea. Always keep an eye on the water, whales might show up at any time.

south america cruise including falklands

Day 15-17 - Antarctic Peninsula

Once we arrive in the calmer waters off the Antarctic Peninsula, we will try to make landings, with activities and zodiac excursions, two times a day. This could be a cruise along a spectacular ice cliff, through a maze of glistering icebergs, or through deep bays in the hopes of spotting whales. Penguins we might see in Antarctica include gentoos, chinstraps and adelie penguins. Every voyage is different, some examples of places you might visit:

Paradise Harbour is a protected bay, surrounded by magnificent peaks and glaciers. The serenity of Paradise Harbour is a haven for whales and we might spot humpbacks, and minkes, orcas, as well as Crabeater seals, as we explore the bay in zodiacs. Words cannot describe this experience of seeing these animals up close.

Danco Island is a great place for a hike in snow shoes. Head all the way to the top of the island for the most spectacular view over the surrounding bay. Keep an eye out for the many penguin highways leading all the way up the hill. It’s a wonderful sight to watch the gentoos commute between the sea and the rookery.

If the ice conditions are right, you might sail into the Lemaire Channel . A breathtaking narrow channel with high mountains on both sides. Often the water here is so calm it acts like a mirror, reflecting the surroundings in the dark icy water.

Along the Antarctic Peninsula there are plenty more locations to visit. You might also go to Curtiss Bay, Cuverville Island, the Errera Channel or Wilhelmina Bay. We hope to have as much time as possible to marvel at nature’s glory up close.

south america cruise including falklands

Day 18-20 - Crossing the Drake Passage

Time to head back to Tierra del Fuego, with lectures and videos to complete our Antarctic education. While crossing the Drake Passage you will have plenty of time time for reflection and discussion about what you have experienced during your expedition cruise to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. As the ship approaches the tip of South America, the captain may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, weather conditions permitting.

We cruise up the Beagle Channel, before quietly slipping into dock in Ushuaia. Disembarkation takes place after breakfast. It’s a busy time, with people saying farewell to the crew and to fellow passengers who have shared the intensity of exploring this magnificent white wilderness. You head off in different directions, hopefully with a newfound sense of the immense power of nature.

Port Stanley Cruise Port Guide

If you could only describe Port Stanley and the Falkland Islands archipelago in a few words, they would be “mysterious, remote, and pristine”. On a South America cruise , you might be expecting most of the stops to be glitzy metropolises, beachy resort towns, or lively capitals, but Falkland Islands is none of these things. Instead, you’ll feel like you’re at the edge of the earth, surrounded by colonies of species like sea lions and rockhopper penguins.

Port Stanley, the capital, is a jumping-off point for day trips to Gypsy Cove or Cape Pembroke, where you’ll be able to hear yourself think, blissfully. Take in the fresh air one big gulp of breath at a time. When you’re ready to explore on your Falkland Islands cruise, head to Pebble Island or Sea Lion Island to get up close and personal with the wildlife. Discover the island’s dramatic history over the centuries, repeatedly changing hands among multiple occupiers, at the Falkland Islands Museum. Climb to the top of the Cape Pembroke lighthouse and enjoy the fact that paradise on earth takes many unexpected forms.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Port Stanley Cruise Port

British cuisine has greatly influenced the Falkland Islands and the Port Stanley area, so expect plenty of hearty British dishes like stews, bangers and mash, and meat pies, as well as a cultural emphasis on teatime. Biscuits, tea ceremonies, and coffee are an important social aspect of daily life here. Try Globe Tavern for pub food like fish and chips and cold beer. Head to Bittersweet for sweets, coffee, bagels, and pastries for breakfast. On the weekend evenings, it turns into a lively, classy wine bar.

Culture & History of the Port Stanley Cruise

The remoteness of the Falkland Islands, also known as the “Islas Malvinas,” makes this archipelago a fascinating destination to explore. The population of the islands and islets was less than 4,000 people in 2016. The Falkland Islands are an overseas British territory, but they mostly regulate their own government. In the past, however, Argentina has tried to make multiple claims of ownership of the island, causing an ongoing argument between Britain and Argentina for decades. The islands were uninhabited when Europeans arrived in the 1600s, and colonizers included both the British, French, and Spanish at different times. Today, ecotourism is a huge reason why people flock to Port Stanley and the islands on a Falklands cruise. Today, the culture of the Falkland Islands is greatly influenced by British culture.

Port Stanley Facilities & Location

From your Falklands cruise ship, the tender boat will drop you off right in front of the visitor information center. There’s an information desk, maps of the island, phones, and internet so you can check in back home should you need to. This is a good spot to get additional information about island tours as well.

Transportation in Port Stanley

The town of Port Stanley is small enough to walk throughout the town to the destinations of your choice. There’s a three-day minimum requirement for renting a car in the Falkland Islands, so it’s not feasible for cruise passengers to rent a car here. Taxis are available throughout Port Stanley and are mostly concentrated at the cruise pier.

Shopping Near the Port Stanley Cruise Port

Falklands cruise passengers will find a gift shop near the port in the Visitor Center, which sells t-shirts, hats, trinkets, and other souvenirs to memorialize your Falkland Islands cruise.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of the Falkland Islands is the Falklands Islands pound. Note that there aren’t any ATMs in Port Stanley. Tipping isn’t common in the Falkland Islands, though you can round up to the nearest pound at restaurants or for a taxi driver if you wish.

Falkland Islands

You are here > Home > Plan Your Trip > Getting Here > Cruises to the Falklands

The Falkland Islands feature on itineraries for many cruise companies. Ships visiting the Islands vary greatly in size from small ice-breaking yachts to large, luxury vessels with passenger numbers from as little as ten to as many as three thousand.

Expedition vessels usually include the Falklands as part of an Antarctic route incorporating South Georgia and the Antarctic peninsula. Most will call in to one or more of the outlying islands, offering fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities and exhilarating walks along hills, cliff-tops or around the shoreline. Zodiac craft (inflatable small boats) provide transport from ship to shore.

Large ships generally tour South America with a stop in the Falklands en route around Cape Horn.

All vessels have the Island’s capital  Stanley , scheduled as part of the tour. Passengers may arrive ashore by tender, inflatable zodiac or disembark directly at Stanley’s floating dock facility. The Visitor Centre is the ideal starting point for any visit, providing information about the city and connecting visitors with tours and transport. Tenders arrive at pontoons directly in front of the Centre. The floating dock is a short bus-ride with courtesy transport provided.

The city is easy to explore on foot but to get the best from your visit, a tour with a local guide is highly recommended. Shore excursions can be booked on board ship which is the best option for anyone keen to take a tour. The range on offer is tremendous from various trips to penguin colonies and farms, Stanley’s highlights by bus, battlefield and walking tours.

Stanley’s population is relatively small and many hands turn-to when a large ship calls. Some guides can be found at the Visitor Centre but advance booking is essential to guarantee an excursion on a busy day. Some destinations are only available by pre-booked tour. On busy cruise days small buses run regularly to the nearby penguin colony at Gypsy Cove; alternatively it’s an interesting walk or make enquiries for a personal driver.

south america cruise including falklands

Stanley/Falkland Is/Islas Malvinas

The world's southernmost capital, Stanley is located in the Falklands archipelago, which consists of two main islands, East and West Falkland, along with smaller islands nearby. Stanley is proud of its British heritage, evidenced everywhere from its red telephone boxes to its pubs. The Falklands were first claimed by the English in 1765; over the centuries the Crown has had to abandon, reclaim and defend these far-flung islands from invading nations—including an Argentine foray in 1982. During the early years of their colonization, the Falklands were used as a base for ships hunting sperm whales for oil, followed by those hunting seals for fur. Today in this remote British territory, fishing and tourism are what drive the economy.

Even a taste of Rio leaves you wanting more, so an entire day is devoted to independent exploration.

Highlights - Falkland Islands

Located 400 km off the coast of Tierra del Fuego and 1,200 km from the far north of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands remain the perfect transition between Ushuaia, the starting point for Antarctic cruises, and the White Continent. Here are three highlights of this incredible archipelago.

Enjoy a variety of panoramas

Embarking on a cruise in Antarctica via the Falkland Islands is all about gradually immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the wild south. Although inhabited, the archipelago is still well-preserved. Sheep farming is the main activity of the approximately 3,200 inhabitants. These free-range animals roam freely on the green moors. With 750 islands, the archipelago is home to a multitude of varied landscapes . Rugged terrain, plains, beaches and sheer cliffs make up this tapestry of flowering moorland that stands out against the blue backdrop of the Atlantic.

Seabird watching

Seabird watching

Ocean, land, sky... The show is all around you. This enchanted setting is home to many bird species. The black-browed albatrosses take flight from the cliffs and twirl through dizzying drops before grazing the crest of a wave. Facing threats, these birds found a refuge in the cliffs of the Falkland Islands where they could reproduce in summer. The 100,000 couples of Magellanic penguins, gentoos, rockhoppers and imperial shags also make their nests there. Each species marks its own territory. New Island is a small piece of land to the west of the archipelago where you can observe a colony of rockhopper penguins, albatrosses and imperial shags. The Falkland Current is a cold marine current located west of the islands, which provides all these species with the prey they need to survive.

Meet the marine mammals

Meet the marine mammals

The nature reserves have also become optimal habitats for certain marine mammals. The small Commerson's dolphin is identifiable by its black and white colouring, and it roams the shores alongside the Peale's dolphin, killer whales, sea lions and fur seals . In the heart of these protected waters, they sometimes come to welcome visitors on their arrival, resulting in an unforgettable experience and making the Falklands an unmissable port of call on an Antarctic cruise.

Arrive to the capital of the Falkland Islands, also known as Port Stanley and you'll find a coastal town worthy of a jigsaw puzzle. This quaint city is home to a small population (so few are the residents that the town's only "jail" can only hold thirteen people.) But it's a place big on things to see and do. Whether you visit the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, the southernmost cathedral in the world, or look for penguins.

Observe Penguins in the Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands, a territory of the United Kingdom, are the perfect place for those on a South American cruise to experience stunning natural scenery as well as the island's renowned bird and marine life.

Fans of animals will definitely fall in love with these small islands, as they boast one of the few non-Arctic environments where one can see penguins in their natural habitat. The best place to view these cute birds is in one of the many penguin colonies on the island.

You'll have several to choose from, but it helps knowing which species you'll be viewing. Gentoo penguins can be thought of as the more traditional of the two species - the black-and-white tuxedo penguins. Rockhopper penguins are immediately distinguishable by their bright yellow arched eyebrows - a feature that tends to be a hit with kids. You may also get to see Magellan or King penguins.

These colonies are officially recognized as nature preserves, and penguins are far from the only attraction. Many also feature sea lions, albatross and even dolphins. If you end up going to Bluff Cove, you'll also have the chance to tour a small museum that will explain the way of life in the Falklands.

After you've had your introduction to penguins, head back to the main port of Stanley. Take a quick tour of this small city and see some of the highlights, such as the Whalebone Arch and beautiful Christ Church Cathedral.

If you're looking to learn more about the history of the Falklands, head to the Britannia Museum. The entire history of the Falklands is covered here, but special attention is paid to the 1982 Falkland Wars, when the U.K. went into battle against Argentina after the two nations disputed control of the islands.
