22 Best things to see & do in Victoria Falls

White-water rafting on the Zambezi River

People in a raft in the white-water rapids on the Zambezi

Bucket List Experience

Widely regarded as some of the best white-water rafting in the world, running the rapids formed by the Zambezi funnelling through the Batoka Gorge, is far and away the most popular adventure activity at Victoria Falls.

These are among the largest commercially rafted rapids in the world, and not for the faint-hearted. However, rafting companies take safety incredibly seriously and guides are trained in swift-water rescue and accredited by the International Rafting Federation.

Victoria Falls Waterfall

Water tumbling down from the Victoria Falls waterfall

Straddling the border of Zambia & Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is the world’s largest sheet of falling water – an incredible spectacle that sees the entire 1.7km span of the great Zambezi River tumble off a vertical ridge, sending clouds of mist into the surrounding forest.

First ‘discovered’ by David Livingstone in 1855, Victoria Falls – at a whopping 108m high – it is one of the largest waterfalls on the planet.

From the raw power of summer floods to the delicate cataracts of the dry season, it’s impossible not to be awed and humbled by  Mosi-Oa-Tunya , the ‘smoke that thunders’.

Swim in the Devil’s Pool

Livingstone, Southern Province, Zambia

Man jumping into Devil's Pool right on the lip of the falls

Livingstone Island, a small island in the centre of the flow, was opened in 1995 to offer a unique, and truly mind-blowing picnic spot – right on the edge of the Falls.

Yet increasingly the real draw for many to the island has become the Devil’s Pool, a small lagoon, enclosed by rock, right on the lip of the 103m-high Falls, where a lucky (crazy) few, at the right time of year, can go for a dip. The pool is chest-deep and calm, so you don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but you’ll want a good head for heights.

Kayak the Zambezi River

The Zambezi river shot from above

If rafting the Grade V white-water rapids of the Batoka Gorge are too intimidating, a sedate canoe safari on the Zambezi River above the Falls is a good fallback option.

Using stable inflatable canoes, you’ll paddle through a selection of small rapids, viewing both the Zambian and Zimbabwean side of the river. Big game sightings – including hippo, elephant and crocodile – are commonplace, ensuring your fair share of adrenalin.

Bungee jump from Victoria Falls Bridge

The iconic bridge Victoria Falls bridge spanning the gorge with rainbow

A J Hackett invented the craze of jumping off bridges attached to a stretchable ‘bungee’ at Kawarau Bridge, New Zealand. Today, bungee jumping is fairly ubiquitous, but it’s the setting that makes it an extra special bucket list experience.

It may not be the highest or the oldest, but Victoria Falls’ 111m historic railway bridge spans a spectacular gorge over the churning, crocodile-infested Zambezi. Jump to the thunderous soundtrack of the mega-waterfall behind. It’s unquestionably one of the world’s greatest bunjee jumps – if not the greatest?

Adult price: £130

Zip-line across the Zambezi River

Victoria Falls Town, Matabeleland North, Central African Republic (CAR)

Man smiling on zip-line across the Zambezi with the Victoria Falls Waterfall in the backdrop

If you can’t face the prospect of bungee jumping from the famous Victoria Falls Bridge, the adrenalin-pumping zip-line is a fine way to get your thrills above the Batoka Gorge. The zip-line stretches for 425 metres across the gorge, and stepping free of terra firma will see you hurtling along at more than 100km/h.

If you have the presence of mind, look upstream and you’ll be rewarded with dramatic views of the Falls and the iconic iron railway bridge. Afterwards, catch your breath with a drink at the scenic Lookout Café.

Adult price: £65

Duration: 1-2 hours

Safaris around Victoria Falls

A jeep on safari

While the waterfall is the main attraction, the game reserves around Victoria Falls offer some decent sightings, and are a bucket list inclusion if you have not yet been on safari.

You might not see the ‘Big Five’ (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) but to experience the African bush – in vehicles or on foot – is unforgettable and unmissable. The best reserves for sightings are Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve, and Zambia’s Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park – home to the protected white rhino.

Make sure you book a night drive. They cost more, but are tremendously exciting (especially for kids) and offer the chance to spot lesser-seen nocturnals like porcupines and aardvarks.

Good for age: 8+

Duration: 3-4 hours

Helicopter flights over Victoria Falls

Livingstone, Southern Province, South Africa

Helicopter flights over Victoria Falls

David Livingstone wrote of the Victoria Falls that ‘scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in flight’… so perhaps it’s no surprise that flying over the falls is one of the best way to appreciate the great spectacle.

Short flips have you over the Falls and back in under 15 minutes, while longer chopper excursions drop into the gorge to skim above the rapids. Choose between helicopters, or, for the truly daring, microlights.

Adult price: £150

Good for age: 10+

Duration: 1.5 hours

Cruise on the Zambezi

Victoria Falls Town, Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe

cruise boat on the river zambezi

While most of your Victoria Falls trip will be spent on adventure and adrenalin, a cruise on the upper Zambezi is all about relaxing with a few drinks.

Cruises take place throughout the day, but the sundowner trip is hard to beat: while the sun burnishes the waters of the Zambezi, keep an eye open for elephant swimming between the banks, and an ear alert for the ‘ho-ho-ho’ of a grumpy hippo.

Adult price: £35

Jetboating on the Zambezi

A jetboat with people on the Zambezi river alongside the base of a waterfall

Why go down the surging Zambezi when you can go up? Where the white-water rafting ends is where the Jet Boat Extreme begins, powering up the rapids courtesy of a 700-horsepower engine that makes short work of the raging river.

It’ll shake your fillings loose and leave you soaked, but this white-knuckle ride is ideal for visitors who can’t – or won’t – brave the rapids by raft.

Royal Livingstone Express

The Livingstone Express train with steam locomotive

Cecil John Rhodes dreamt of a railway from Cape to Cairo, crossing Victoria Falls’ famous bridge. His tracks never made it that far, but you can still relive the glamour of colonial train travel as this historic steam train runs through the Zambian bush.

Carriages are decorated in a plush colonial style, and as the locomotive chuffs through the game-rich Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and across the Sinde River, you’ll have the chance to spot antelope on the hoof. After toasting the sunset on the iconic Victoria Falls bridge, a five-course set-menu dinner is served.

Safari in Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park, Okavango Delta, Central African Republic (CAR)

Safari in Chobe National Park

One of Africa’s most spectacular wilderness areas, Botswana’s Chobe National Park is an easy day-trip from Victoria Falls. Guided tours include a game drive in the Park, but the highlight is a game-spotting cruise on the Chobe River, with its profusion of hippo, crocodile and birdlife.

Chobe is famed for its thousands of elephants – so if you want to get up close to wild herds of elephant, this is the place to visit – as well as the prides of elephant-hunting lions that prey on them. (The kills invariably happen though at night, so you’re unlikely to see one).

The Park is home to more than 400 species of bird, making it one the top birding spots in Africa, as well as the only place in Botswana where you can spot the threatened Puku antelope.

13 Things to do in Victoria Falls

Leonie Taylor

From white water rafting to swimming in Devil's Pool, choose from a range of adventurous activities on a Victoria Falls tour

The mighty Zambezi River and the majestic Victoria Falls form a natural border between the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia . Regardless of whether you choose to stay on the Zimbabwe side or the Zambia side, you can enjoy many different activities on a Victoria Falls tour.

From white-water rafting, bungee jumping and zip lining, to incredible game drives in Hwange National Park and sunset boat cruises on the Zambezi River, there are tours, attractions and things to do to suit every taste.

Keep in mind that your waterfall experience can be very different depending on when you go to Victoria Falls  and if there are specific activities you’d like to include in your itinerary, you’ll need to choose the right time of year to travel.

For example, activities on the Zambezi River are best when water levels are at their lowest, otherwise the current is too strong, whilst activities on land or in the air are best when water levels are higher, as you’ll get the most dramatic views.

Here are our 13 favourite activities at Victoria Falls:

  • Walk along the footpaths of Victoria Falls National Park
  • Walk along Knife Edge Bridge on the Zambian side
  • Visit Livingstone Island and take a dip in the Devil’s Pool
  • Enjoy a sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi river
  • Take a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls
  • Experience the Zambezi river walk
  • Enjoy a safari experience in Hwange National Park
  • Experience white water rafting on the Zambezi river
  • Learn about the history of the Victoria Falls bridge

  • Explore the historical town of Livingstone in Zambia

Looking for travel inspiration? Wayfairer trip ideas that will take you to Victoria Falls:

1. Walk along the footpaths of Victoria Falls National Park

Walking along the footpath - activity at Victoria Falls

Have a walk along the footpaths next to Victoria Falls

There are national parks on both sides of the waterfall: Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia. Both parks offer the opportunity to get up close to the thundering falls, however the experience is quite different from one side to another.

Victoria Falls National Park, located on the Zimbabwe side, is a lush rainforest reserve and offers some of the best views of Victoria Falls. You can walk along the footpaths of the park, which meander through the rainforest and out onto viewpoints where you can see four of the five different sections of the falls on this side: The Devil's Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls and Horseshoe Falls.

You can easily cross the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia via the Victoria Falls Bridge – just don’t forget your passport when heading out on excursions, as you’ll need it if you’re crossing the border from one country into another.

2. Walk along Knife Edge Bridge on the Zambian side

Knife Edge Bridge walk - activity at Victoria Falls

Take in the spectacular views from Knife Edge Bridge

From Zambia, you can only see the Eastern Cataract, the second deepest falls of the series, at 101 metres deep.

However, this side also offers an incredible opportunity to get exceptionally close to the cascades of water, as you can walk along the paved paths on the edge of Victoria Falls and feel the spray on your face.

During the high water season, from February to July, you can cross Knife Edge Bridge, which is an exhilarating walk along the edge of the precipice, 100 metres above the gorge.

3. Visit Livingstone Island and take a dip in the Devil’s Pool

Livingstone Island, named after 19th century European explorer David Livingstone, is located in the middle of the Zambezi River, right on the edge of Victoria Falls. A trip to Livingstone Island begins with a thrilling short boat ride through the channels of the Zambezi, then you can enjoy a guided tour of the island.

Your tour guide will initially lead you to the west of the island overlooking Main Falls. This is a magnificent viewpoint and offers a completely different perspective to the views of Victoria Falls that you get from the path through the rainforest on the other side of the gorge.

During the tour, you can learn about the history of the island and the formation of Victoria Falls, surrounded by spectacular views of the Zambezi River and the falls thundering into the gorge below. Your guide will also take you to the edge of the island, where David Livingstone stood for the first time in November 1855.

The Livingstone Island tour is seasonal and can only be done when the water level of the Zambezi River is low enough to allow safe access, usually from late June to early March. When the water level of the Zambezi is too high, the island is completely closed.

Swim to the edge of Devil's Pool

After the island tour, you’ll have the opportunity to take a dip in the Devil’s Pool. To reach the pool, you must first swim a short distance upstream (you don’t have to be a strong swimmer, as there’s a safety rope in place as an added precaution), then you’ll climb out on a rocky outcrop close to the edge of the falls and the Devil’s Pool.

The Devil’s Pool is a deep, natural pool created by thousands of years of erosion. What is unique about it is that there’s a rock ledge on the lip of the falls, where the water is only a few centimetres deep, and this natural barrier allows you to jump into the deep pool without getting swept over the edge.

However, taking a dip in the Devil's Pool is only possible when the Zambezi water levels are low, usually between mid-August and mid-January.

Wayfairer Top Tip One of the most exhilarating activities at Victoria Falls is the experience of lying at the edge of the Devil’s Pool and looking into the 103-metre chasm of the falls, with huge torrents of water flowing just metres away.

4. Enjoy a sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi river

Watch the sunset on the Zambezi River watching the sunset

A late afternoon boat cruise is a wonderful way to enjoy the tranquility of the upper Zambezi and see a spectacular African sunset. During your two-hour cruise you can expect to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, vervet monkeys, baboons and a variety of birdlife.

Wayfairer Top Tip If you are looking for a more adventurous sunset cruise experience at Victoria Falls, you can take to the river in a two-person canoe on a guided excursion. Float down the Zambezi right next to elephants and hippos.

5. Take a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls

victoria-falls_pixabay_free_stock_photo

A fantastic way to appreciate the sheer size of Victoria Falls is with a helicopter ride. The 12-13 flight will take you over the cascades, soaring above the towering wall of mist that gives the site it's local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya or "The Smoke That Thunders."

You’ll enjoy scenic views of Batoka Gorge and look out for hippos or elephants as you fly over the Zambezi River. Once you've flown over Kalunda Island, your pilot will take a left turn and prepare for your landing.

A longer 25-minute flight offers the opportunity to see more of the Batoka Gorge and also takes you over Zambezi National Park.

6. Experience the Zambezi river walk

Victoria Falls view through trees

Enjoy a walk along the Zambezi River

The Zambezi River Walk, on the Zimbabwe side, offers a fantastic way to experience the beauty of the upper stretches of the Zambezi. The walk starts just beyond the Victoria Falls National Park border, just above the Devil's Cataract.

On this gentle walk along the banks of the Zambezi River, you’re likely to see troops of baboons, plus you might also see warthogs, hippos, elephant and buffalo.

7. Enjoy a safari in Hwange National Park

Elephants in Hwange National Park

Enjoy a safari in Hwange National Park

Covering an area of 15,000 square kilometres, Hwange National Park is the largest Zimbabwe national park. It's famous for its huge herds of buffalo and elephant; Hwange is home to a population of approximately 30,000 elephants, which is the second largest in the world after Chobe National Park in Botswana.

You’ll have a good chance of spotting the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard) on your game drives, plus Hwange is an important breeding ground for endangered African wild dog, black rhino, as well as roan and sable antelopes.

Hwange is located 104 kilometres from Victoria Falls (approximately two hours drive) making this an excellent day trip option for those who wish to include a safari experience in their Victoria Falls itinerary.

8. Experience white water rafting on the Zambezi river

rafting_zimbabwe_free_stock_photo_unsplash_anna-sullivan_2023

For those who are more adventurous, have a go at rafting on the Zambezi River

A white-water rafting adventure on the rapids of the Zambezi River is one of the best things to do at Victoria Falls and an adventure of a lifetime. The Zambezi River below Victoria Falls boasts one of the most spectacular white-water sections in the world, including class 4 and class 5 rapids.

The views of the gorge are spectacular from the viewpoint of your raft and you’ll have plenty of time to take in your surroundings during the calm stretches. Plus, you'll feel the full force of the water on the more challenging stretches.

However, like many activities at Victoria Falls, white-water rafting is a seasonal activity and depends on the water levels.

9. Learn about the history of the Victoria Falls bridge

Train along Victoria Falls Bridge

The Victoria Falls Bridge connects Zimbabwe and Zambia, and is an iconic part of the Victoria Falls landscape. Originally named the Zambezi Bridge, it took 14 months to construct and was completed in 1905.

The Historic Bridge Tour is a fantastic experience and includes an informative presentation on the fascinating history of this famous bridge.

You can also get harnessed up and walk under the bridge, where you can take in the spectacular 360-degree views and fully appreciate the immense depth of Batoka Gorge. You may even be lucky enough to see a double or full-circle rainbow, which is formed by the spray.

10. Bungee jump from the Victoria Falls bridge

One of the most daring things to do at Victoria Falls is a bungee jump from the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge - with the epic waterfalls behind you and the mighty Zambezi River beneath you, this is the ultimate adrenaline activity.

The Victoria Falls Bridge itself is impressive and offers incredible views as you get ready for your jump.

Once you're on the bridge, ankle and body harnesses will be attached and then your jump-master will give you calm and encouraging instructions, followed by a countdown. Once you leap from the bridge, you’ll experience four seconds of freefall as you plummet 111 metres towards the rapids of the Zambezi River.

11. Experience the Zambezi zipline and Flying Fox

Rainbow in a gorge at Victoria Falls

Another exciting way to experience the Batoka Gorge is from a 135-metre zipline across the canyon, 75 metres above the Zambezi River. This is the ultimate adrenaline rush, as you’ll reach speeds of 90 to 100 kilometres per hour within just a few seconds.

There’s also a "flying fox" option, where you’ll take a running jump into Batoka Gorge and soar horizontally across the gorge with the mighty Zambezi beneath you. You’ll be clipped into a harness attached to a pulley, which glides along a cable over Batoka Gorge, giving you the sensation of flying.

12. Glide across the Zambezi River on the Victoria Falls Bridge Slide

Rapids on the Zambezi River near Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls Bridge Slide is a 300-metre zipline that begins from a platform on the Zambian edge of Batoka Gorge and gently glides over the rapids of the Zambezi River before reaching the Zimbabwean side of the bridge.

As you slide from the edge of the gorge towards the bridge, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic Victoria Falls.

This is the perfect Victoria Falls activity for those who don’t feel quite brave enough to experience the Zambezi zipline or a bungee jump from Victoria Falls Bridge. It's also a fantastic option for families with young children (children aged between 4 to 14 years can experience the bridge slide, however they must ride tandem with an adult).

13. Explore the historical town of Livingstone in Zambia

Zambezi River feeding Victoria Falls

Livingstone is located 10 kilometres from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls Bridge and is the gateway to many of the attractions of Victoria Falls and Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.

This historical town was moved from its original site at the Old Drift to Constitution Hill in 1905 due to malarial outbreaks. The new location was carefully planned with wide, tree-lined streets and buildings, high ceilings and mosquito-netted verandas.

Livingstone has preserved much of its colonial architecture, yet it also has a small-town African atmosphere. If you spend a morning strolling along the colonial streets, drinking a coffee at one of the pavement cafés and exploring the colourful local markets, you’ll get an interesting insight into this fascinating town and local life.

We also recommend that you visit The Livingstone Museum, which traces local history and the life of the Scottish explorer, David Livingstone, after whom the town was named.

One thing not to do at Victoria Falls

Elephant with baby along the river near Victoria Falls

Although elephant ride activities are slowly stopping due to pressure from international tourism groups, this practice can still be found around the Victoria Falls area.

Sadly, these so-called "domesticated" elephants are taken from their families very young, have their spirits broken through abuse until they are "tame" enough to allow tourists to ride them.

We strongly discourage this practice and ask you to show your support by doing the same. Eventually, the lack of demand combined with the invention of animal protection groups will mean that elephant rides could soon be a thing of the past.

Instead, see these incredible creatures as part of a game drive on a wildlife safari at one of the national parks in the region. To learn more about ethical elephant interactions, read our blog on elephant sanctuaries in Thailand.

We have personally compiled a list of some fantastic local hotspots to explore for returning travellers who are looking for something a little different and off the beaten track. Here are some of our personal favourites…

One of the biggest baobabs in Zimbabwe and a legend in Victoria Falls. Estimated to be almost 2000 years old there is some speculation that it might actually be 3 trees grown into one, why not see and decide for yourself? It’s only 2 km out of town and a great place to buy baobab seeds

Pizza at Zambezi House

This connection to history and the age of exploration is strengthened by an educational talk on the spirit and story of David Livingstone.

Dusty Road Experience

A true hidden gem in Victoria Falls! This unique restaurant and cultural experience is found in the heart of the Victoria Falls township where most of the local inhabitants live. Experience warm Zimbabwean hospitality and hearty meals with a strong Zimbabwean heritage in this quirkily designed and charming restaurant.

Painting Elephants at “The Wallow”

Create your own beautiful safari souvenir while exploring your creative side. This guided open-air painting session has one of the world’s most fascinating subjects: the African Elephant. The art session takes place just 8 km out of town at “The Wallow” a beautiful elephant sanctuary that lets travellers observe the grey giants in close proximity. Painters are seated in front of the waterhole with the elephants going about their natural business and receive assistance from instructors if needed.

Feel the wind in your hair and simply apply the breaks whenever you want to stop and take a picture or exchange pleasantries with a friendly local. All time classic Victoria Falls highlights

  • Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park : If you want to see the famous Falls on foot, this is where you’ll need to go. Walk along the edge of the gorge and explore the lush rainforest that is watered by the mist from the Falls. Depending on the fullness of the Falls you may want to wear a raincoat or poncho as your clothes could get soaked through.
  • Swim at Devil’s Pool : This unique activity is only available from the Zambian side of the falls and offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
  • Historical Bridge Tour: you know the entire bridge was constructed in England and then shipped in separate parts to Zimbabwe and assembled there in 1905? Learn this and much more on this interesting tour. A great homage to a fantastical feat of engineering that is explained very entertainingly by a character dressed in old fashioned garb.
  • Bungee Jump : into the abyss while strapped to a bungee cord, the perfect activity for thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies. The distance that you fall is 111m and lasts about 4 exhilarating seconds. This bungee jump has one of the most beautiful backdrops in the world, the majestic Falls. (or try the thrilling gorge swing at Batoka !)
  • White Water Rafting : navigate the rapids and earn the ultimate bragging rights, how many people can say they white-water rafted on the mighty Zambezi? Known as one of the best day rafting trips in the world the Grade 5 rapids are more thrilling when the water levels are low so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a wild adventure.
  • Heli-flip : fly above the Falls and observe them from the sky. It’s an excellent way to truly take in their magnitude. Besides the panorama view of the Falls you will also see how the Zambezi River winds and curves and how the gorge dramatically zig zags. The shorter 13-minute flight is known as the Helicopter Flight of Angels while the 25-minute one does a bit more exploring of the area.
  • Art & Curio Market : A bustling market selling the traditionally handcrafted African curios that make excellent keepsakes to take back home. Browse, bargain and bring a bit of Africa home with you. You can find this market by the entrance of Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.
  • High tea at Vic Falls Hotel : cucumber sandwiches and cakes, a posh British tea experience in heart of Africa. You don’t need to be a guest of the luxurious Victoria Falls Hotel to enjoy this outing, just show up between 3 and 5.30pm. Why not put on a nice summer dress or a button-up shirt and make an occasion out of it? Pinkies up!

12 Essential Victoria Falls tips: Everything you should know to plan your trip

Are you planning a trip to Victoria Falls? Here are the essential Victoria Falls tips plus everything you need to know before you visit this incredible landmark.

Located in the middle of the Zambezi river and at the border of both Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world that is high on every traveler’s bucket list .

I mean every adventure traveler would one day want to see the biggest curtains of falling water at the Victoria Falls.

Though it may not be the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it is classified as the largest waterfall with a height of 108 meters (354 ft) and a width of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft). Now that’s something you’d want to see at least once in a lifetime.

But before you travel to the storm that thunders, there are a few essential Victoria falls tips you should know to make sure that you plan you’re trip very well.

So as you plan your trip to Victoria Falls, here are the best tips you need to know for an amazing time.

Victoria Falls tips to know to help you plan your trip

victoria falls tips and guides

1. Best time to visit Victoria falls

Though Victoria falls is a year-long destination, not every time of the year is perfect to visit depending on what you want to do. You should know that the water levels of the falls change as the season changes.

If you want to see the falls at their highest capacity with the mist so high and the sound so thunderous, you might want to visit from February to May. The only downside of visiting at this time of the year is that some times the mist gets too thick that it becomes hard to see the falls themselves perfectly.

But as the mist clears a bit in the months of January and June, it becomes easier to see the Falls perfectly well plus the bottom of the cliff to see where the water – falls.

Though the water levels reduce a little bit, I believe it’s the perfect season to get a clear view of the Falls and to also take part in some of the Victoria Falls activities like White water rafting.

However, if you want to swim in the devil’s pool on the Zambian side, it can’t be done when the water levels are at their highest as its deadly, you’ll need to wait for September through December when the water levels reduce completely.

With those variations in mind, you’ll need to figure out what you exactly want to do at the Falls and choose the right time for you.

But regardless of what time of the year you visit the Victoria falls, I can guarantee that you’ll be blown away by this incredible natural wonder.

2. Which side of the boarder should you stay at

This might be the hugest debate and the most asked question about visiting the Victoria Falls. Since the Falls are right at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, it’s sometimes not easy to decide where to stay or visit from.

Of course, it would be so cool to visit from both sides which you should actually do if you can but not everyone is lucky enough to have that option.

Visiting from either side has its own pros and cons that you should put into account. What I advise you is to look at the pros and cons of visiting from either side and then decide on the perfect side for you.

So to make decision making easy for you, here a few advantages and disadvantages of visiting from either side.

From the Zimbabwe side

  • You can see 75% of the waterfalls from the Zimbabwean side.
  • The Falls of the Zimbabwean side never dry out, unlike the Zambian side which dries out in the months of September to December.
  • The closest town “Victoria falls town” is just a few minutes’ walk from the Victoria falls which makes access very easy at any time of the day unlike the 10km distance of Livingstone town in Zambia from the Falls.
  • The cost of living is a bit high on the Zimbabwean side as the Victoria falls town is completely designed for tourists with everything a bit pricier than in Livingstone town in Zambia.

From the Zambian side

  • You can swim in the devil’s pool which is one of the bucket list activities for adrenaline junkies.
  • The cost of living is a bit low in Living stone town. Actually, even the entrance fee to the falls is a bit cheaper here compare to the Zimbabwean side.

With those few points, it’s easy to see why I highly recommend visiting from the Zimbabwean side . Regardless of when you visit, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the most famous landmarks in Africa from the Zimbabwean side.

3. Check to see if you need a Visa

If you have zeroed down on the side of the border you’ll be staying at, check with your government to see if you need a visa to enter either country and that should be easy.

The tourist Visa is $30 for Zimbabwe and $50 for Zambia but if it’s only a day trip, then you can expect to pay $20.

But what if you plan on visiting the Falls from both countries?

This can be the tricky part! Some people get a visa for one country and loosely assume that it will be automatic to access the falls from the other side of the border without another visa.

But just like crossing any border, you’ll still need to get a visa (depending on the passport you hold).

Zimbabwe might require you to get a visa and Zambia not, or the other way round! What I advise you to do is to make one country your visiting base and treat the other one as a day trip if you don’t plan on doing any activities there other than just seeing the Falls. This will save you a lot of money on accommodation.

You might also look into getting a double entry visa for your base country which is a bit cheaper instead of paying for two separate visas for when you’ll enter the country the second time after your day trip to the other side of the border.

But if both countries require you to get visas, still find out how easy/hard it is to obtain them and whether you need to get them before you travel or visas on arrival are possible. And if it’s Visa on arrival, make sure that you have cash on you to pay for them! It’s normally in US dollars.

Pro tip* Make sure that you get cleared with customs and get your Passport stamped for any border crossing you make not to run into any trouble with the law.

4. How to get to the Victoria Falls

The best part about visiting Victoria Falls is that it’s easily accessible regardless of where you’re coming from and which side of the border you choose to stay at.

To give you an idea, here is how to get to the Victoria Falls both in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

To Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe

Just fly directly into Victoria falls airport and take a taxi to Victoria Falls town.

If you’re flying from any of the Southern African countries, it’s super easy to fly directly to Victoria Falls town. For some countries, flights are not daily, so check to see and book your flight on time.

When you get to Victoria Falls town, it’s so easy to just walk to the falls depending on where you’re staying. Some hotels (mentioned later in this post) are just a 10 to 20 minutes’ walk to the falls.

But for hotels that are not within a walkable distance, some offer free shuttle transfers to and from the falls at specific times. But if you want to go on your own, you can just hire a taxi that will take you directly to the entrance of Victoria falls national park. It can be anywhere between $5 to $10 depending on the distance.

However, if your booked a guided tour (I recommend some later in the post), the tour company will pick you up and later drop you back to your hotel after the tour.

To Livingstone town in Zambia

You can still fly from any of the Southern African airports directly to Livingstone airport which is the getaway to the Falls in Zambia.

Unlike Victoria Falls town, Livingstone is not near the Falls to walk there so by all means, you will need to find a way to get. Still, some hotels offer free shuttle transfers to the falls but if not, then you can get a taxi from Livingstone which can be around $10 to $15 depending on the distance.

For a complete guide on how to get to the Victoria falls, check out this post to know exactly how to get there whether by flying, self-drive, or using buses from the major southern African countries.

7. Where to stay at Victoria Falls

You only need to book accommodation on just one side of the border if you plan to treat the other border as a day trip. And since there are so many things to do on the Zimbabwean side, I’d advise staying on this side.

But if you feel adventurous, have the money, time, and want to explore both sides a bit more, then you can choose to stay a couple of days on each side.

There is a variety of accommodation in both Victoria falls town and Livingstone town ranging from camping, budget, mid-range to luxury. So below are a few places I recommend on both the Zimbabwean and the Zambian side.

Accommodation at Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side

For camping.

Victoria falls rest camp and Lodges

The camp offers a number of campsites for both pitched tents and rooftop tented cars. The campsites are fully developed with well-maintained ablutions plus electricity on-site.

The advantage of camping at Victoria falls rest camp is that it is just a few minutes walk to the Falls.

Other than camping, it also offers private guest houses for non-campers. There is also a restaurant on-site – (In da belly restaurant) which serves a variety of cuisines, so you don’t have to move far if you’re hungry.

Check prices, reviews or book your spot at the Victoria Falls rest Camp from here .

Budget accommodation

N1 Hotel & Campsite Victoria Falls

N1 Hotel is a perfect choice for budget travelers and it is just located 1 km away from the Victoria falls.

It also offers a camping area with beautiful green grasses though there is no privacy if you’re someone who wants it while camping.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at N1 Hotel from here.

Mid-range accommodation

Shearwater’s Explorers village

Shearwater Explorers village offers a variety of accommodation types from private chalets, dorm tents, to individual camping. It is also near Victoria Falls.

Campsites are reasonably cheap but the Chalets are mid-range which means that it can accommodate a number of budgets.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at Shearwater’s Explorers Village from here.

Luxury accommodation

Victoria falls Safari Suites

Located in the heart of Victoria falls town, Victoria Falls Safari Suites is a five-star hotel that commands luxury like no other. If want to be at home away from home, then this is the place to stay.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at Victoria Falls Safari Suites from here.

Victoria falls safari Lodge

Just located 4km from the mighty Victoria Falls, Victoria falls safari Lodge is the place to be for travelers seeking absolute luxury.

Camp Nkwazi

Camp Nkwazi   provides amazing views or River Zambezi as it’s right in front of the River. It’s also not far from Livingstone town which makes moving around easy. On top of that, you can participate in fishing and horse ride when you want to chill at the hotel.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at Camp Nkwazi from here.

The Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara

If luxury is all you want as you experience one of the best adventures in Africa, then sleep at the Royal Livingstone Hotel . It is right next to River Zambezi and just a short minutes walk to the Victoria Falls.

8. Things to do at Victoria Falls

victoria falls tips

Victoria Falls offer a range of activities to participate in spanning from the high adrenaline activities to the less adventurous. So below are a few activities you should plan to do on top of gazing at the glorious Falls.

Take a flight over the Victoria falls

Flying over the Victoria Falls is the most exciting activity at Victoria Falls. The flight offers breathing taking views of the Falls from all angles which makes you appreciate them even more.

The flight also comes with an Audio guide which is well in sync with everything making the experience even much more enjoyable.

It was truly the highlight of my entire trip to Victoria Falls and if it were possible, I would do it over and over again. It’s quite pricey but worth every single penny.

So don’t wait to reach there only to be told that it’s booked out on the day you want, book it now to save your spot. This is actually the exact flight I booked and I had an amazing time with Shearwater Victoria Falls.

Check prices, reviews, or book the Flight of Angels from here.

Pro tip* I opted for a flight of angels but I know some people would prefer the Scenic Microlight Flight. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. But if you’re more adventurous than me, then you can check out the prices, review availability, or even book a Microlight Flight from here. Also, if you’re taking the flight over the falls from the Zambian side, then this is the best flight to book .

Go for a sunset cruise along the Zambezi river.

A sunset cruise at Zambezi River is by far the best way to wind up a day while at Victoria falls. The cruise offers amazing views of the river and a chance to spot hippos and giraffes roaming around the Zambezi national park.

It’s an exciting moment where you get lose, have a couple of drinks and enjoy the most beautiful sunset at Zambezi river.

Check prices, reviews, or book the sunset cruise from here

Go Bungee jumping at the Victoria Falls bridge

For the adrenaline junkies, bungee jumping off the victoria falls bridge is a perfect opportunity to test your adrenaline levels.

Honestly, it can be a bit intimidating to jump off the bridge while looking down the bottom of the cliff but it’s one activity you’ve got to tick off your bucket list.

Check prices, reviews, or book your Bungee jumping adventure from here .

guide to victoria falls

Test your adrenaline by going for white water rafting

This is not an activity for the faint-hearted as the rapids along River Zambezi are of grade 5. But there is no better way to experience the falls than this for extremely adventurous individuals.

I personally didn’t go for white water rafting but since I’ve done white water rafting at River Nile in Uganda , I know how fun, exciting and thrilling it can be and I bet it’s much better with the view of the Falls.

So if you plan to participate, this white water rafting tour is highly recommended by previous participants and I believe you’ll have a blast.

Check prices, reviews, or book your rafting spot from here .

Swim at the devil’s pool

This is truly one of the most fun things to do at Victoria Falls on the Zambian side. Imagine how cool it is to swim at the edge of one of the most famous waterfalls in the world! Incredible, right?

However, please note that swimming at the Devil’s pool can be done at specific times of the year as I mentioned earlier. So if you want to do it, you should first check to see if the time is right.

Check prices, reviews, or book your spot from here .

Go for a bridge swing

Believed to bring out the same heartbeat rate as Bungee jumping or even more, a bridge swing is one of the other adrenaline activities to do at the Victoria Falls.

With a free fall of 80m from the bridge, you’re bound to scream your lungs out as you take on this adventure- at least I did. However, it’s so much you don’t want to miss it.

Those are some of the few things to do at Victoria Falls but others include; the bridge slide, the bridge tour, Sunrise photography tour of the falls, Traditional Village tour , zip-lining, Quad biking, Gorge swing , and so many others. You can check out other fun things to do at the Victoria falls from my previous post.

9. Should you take a tour to the Falls?

If you’re already in Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe or in Livingstone town in Zambia, then you honestly don’t need to book a tour as the falls are nearby and easy to get.

Actually, even when you’re in the nearby countries, say Botswana or South Africa, and you can figure out the best way to get there on your own (you can refer to my previous post on how to get to Victoria fall ), then you may not need to book a tour. I personally did a self-drive from Botswana to Victoria Falls – so it’s totally doable.

However, not everyone wants to figure out the logistics of how, where, and when. If that’s you, then here are the best tours to Victoria falls that you can consider.

Day trip from Botswana to Victoria falls

If you are in Kasane, Botswana, and just want to take a day trip to the Falls and come back, then this day trip is perfect for you.

You get to see the beauty of the smoke that thunders without the hustles of organizing a trip. The best part about this day trip from Kasane to Victoria falls in Zimbabwe is that it’s only limited to 10 people which means that you won’t be overwhelmed by a large group.

Check for availability, prices, reviews or book your day trip from here

From Livingstone: Victoria falls guided tour

You might be in Livingstone town but what to have a guided tour to learn more about the facts and history of Victoria Falls. If that’s you, then this is the perfect tour to opt for .

With over 3 hours of the tour, you’ll learn everything and get all your questions answered as you hear from the knowleagable tour guides.

From Victoria falls town: Victoria Falls private guided tour

Victoria Falls might be within a walkable distance from Victoria Falls town but if you want to get a deeper understanding of this incredible world natural wonder, then opt for this private guided tour.

With a professional tour guide, you’ll learn all the history of the Falls, the local wildlife, and everything you might have wanted to learn about this smoke that thunders.

10. What to pack for Victoria Falls

When it comes to what to pack for Victoria Falls, you don’t need to take much. Just a backpack with a few items will be enough. But to make sure that you don’t forget anything, below are a few items that are essential.

  • Passport: Obviously you’ll need to take your passport to be able to purchase the entry ticket to the falls. You can also take a waterproof passport jacket to make sure that your passport doesn’t get wet.
  • A daypack: I am a backpacker, so I’ll always have a daypack with me wherever I travel to make sure that all my day’s essentials are kept well. I love the Osprey daypack as it’s lightweight, fits everything I need for a day, and also has a water bottle holder where I can just put my bottle. If you don’t have a daypack already, you can check it out here and I promise you’ll love it. You can check for prices and reviews on Amazon or on the actual Osprey website .
  • A good Camera: With this incredible sight in front of you, there is no way you wouldn’t want to take a thousand photos. I prefer a small camera as I can go anywhere with it without any hustles but you can get inspiration from these best travel cameras.
  • A waterproof raincoat : They say it never stops raining at the falls and they’re right! The water splashes so high, it feels like it’s raining the entire time. If you don’t take a rainjacket, I guarantee you’ll all be wet by the end of the tour (depending on the time of the year you visit). There are a number of shops nearby where you can rent a raincoat but it’s not cheap considering that you’ll be visiting the Falls for a couple of hours. So I recommend taking your own waterproof jacket to avoid spending more. I like this Columbia lightweight and waterproof rain jacket and for the guys, this one is perfect .
  • Sunglasses: They may not be necessary to protect your eyes from the sun or look cool for that matter but rather to protect them from the nonstop rain. You could pass on them but I know it’s not fun when water gets into the eyes the entire time.
  • Waterproof Phone Case: If you want to take photos very close to the falls, you might consider taking this waterproof phone case – well unless of course, your phone is water-resistant.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: There is so much to see and the place is quite big. And since you’ll be on foot the entire time, you might want to take comfortable walking shoes. Also, since water splashes all the time, the ground will definitely get slippery. So you might want to substitute your flip flops for your running shoes.
  • Travel Insurance: Travel Insurance is a must-have regardless of where you’re traveling to and Victoria falls is no exception. With travel bringing on its own challenges, you’ve got to be protected the entire time and the best way to do that is to cover yourself with World Nomads travel insurance. It covers a number of items including the most adventurous activities travelers love to do. You can request a quote from World Nomads from here.

11. How long should your visit last

There is no set time on how long your trip should last as that depends on how fast or paced you want to take in the views from each angle of the Falls.

But to get the most out of your visit and this is when you’ve seen every little corner, I suggest putting aside 2 to 3 hours. It might seem like a lot (or little for some), but it’s the ideal time.

If you’re not traveling with a group, you won’t have to worry about this as you can take your time without feeling like you’re delaying or rushing the others.

If you visit the Falls from the Zimbabwean side, it’s very easy to see every spot as they marked out well all the best viewpoints from 1 to 16 with 1 being the starting point – so it’s hard to skip any spot.

12. Where to eat at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls town is a major tourist place with so many great restaurants to eat at. Whether you want to try out Zimbabwean dishes or Mediterranean dishes, these restaurants offer a wide range of choices.

Lola’s Tapas.

Owned by Lola, a very friendly Spanish native, Lola’s Tapas is a great place to enjoy local games meat and Mediterranean cuisine.

While you’re there, try out the special Crocodile dish. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to a performance from the local artists.

Shearwaters cafe

Want to treat yourself to a western meal? Then opt for Shearwaters cafe. It is perfectly located on the main street of victoria falls town serving a wide range of western meals and cocktails.

Shearwaters café has a great and welcoming ambiance – a quality that has made it a popular spot among tourists.

In da belly restaurant.

Located inside the Victoria falls rest camp, In da belly restaurant serves a mix of local game meats and traditional local dishes. The name “In da belly” is a play of words derived from “Ndebele”, one of the major tribes in Zimbabwe.

There you have it, those were the essential Victoria Falls tips you need to know to plan your trip well. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, how excited are you to finally see the Victoria Falls! I know I was at 11, so I know how incredibly amazing it is.

For me, visiting the Victoria falls was one of my best travel experiences and I am excited for you! But if you’ve already been to this wonderful landmark, share with me how your experience was!

And if you have more questions as you plan your trip to the Victoria falls, leave them in the comment section and I will answer them soon.

The “Big Tree” is a giant Baobab tree found not far from the Zambezi river above the waterfall.

This is an impressive example of the unusual Baobab species – Adansonia Digitata – and is definitely worth a visit. You have to see it, to believe the scale of this tree.

It is a long history dating back to the discovery of the incredible waterfall by David Livingstone.

The Mighty Zambezi

The Zambezi River is an amazing spectacle in itself.

This ‘river of life’ invites you to experience some time on the river itself, either on a river cruise or an excursion to one of the many islands upstream.

This is a peaceful stretch of the river before it reaches the waterfall and spills noisily over the edge.

The Statue Of David Livingstone

Livingstone Discovers Victoria Falls

David Livingstone was an intrepid explorer who spent 33 years travelling through the African bush. Starting in Namibia in 1853 he made his way to Angola and back.

He then started another expedition, this time following the Zambezi River to the Mozambique coastline.

It was on this journey that he discovered Victoria Falls.

The local Makololo tribe had a name for this natural spectacle even then – Mosi-oa-tunya. The meaning is ‘ the thundering smok e’ or ‘ the smoke that thunders ‘.

The thundering noise the waterfall makes and the rising spray from the chasm fits the description precisely.

You can find his statue overlooking the Devil’s Cataract on the Zimbabwe side of the waterfall.

You can choose to go sightseeing at all or just a few of these tourist attractions. Some embody the strength of human spirit to achieve greatness, while others showcase the beauty and resilience of nature over the millennia.

Tour Livingstone Island , enjoy breakfast or high tea and take a dip in Devil’s Pool

Livingstone Island is often touted as the point at which David Livingstone first set eyes upon Victoria Falls (though one must imagine the noise might have tipped him off beforehand) and is positioned at the very edge of the Falls. Follow in David’s footsteps to the island in the company of experienced guides before sitting down to a hearty breakfast or high tea. Thrill-seekers can also swim into a rock pool (Devil’s Pool) and perch with elbows dangling out over the drop below!

It is important to note that this activity is only offered during the low-water months from August to January and can only be accessed from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls

Spot the Big 5 on a game drive

Zambezi National Park (Zimbabwe), Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park (Zambia) and Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve (Zimbabwe) all provide exceptional opportunities to encounter the Big 5, along with a variety of other species. Climb aboard an open four-wheel drive vehicle and see if you can spot one of the region’s elusive black rhinos!

Victoria Falls

Take in the fascinating story of Victoria Falls on the Historical Bridge Tour

Transport yourself back in time to when Cecil John Rhodes envisioned a railway running from Cape to Cairo and the geographical impediments blocking its path. Descend onto the catwalks below the Victoria Falls Bridge and consider the feats of engineering involved in its construction at the very start of the 20 th century. The tongue-in-cheek guides will provide a light-hearted but detailed history of this remarkable structure.

Victoria Falls

Adventure to nearby Chobe National Park for the day

Botswana’s Chobe National Park is a name imbued with the spirit of safari legend – a land of dramatic wildlife viewing and hundreds upon hundreds of elephants. Set out on a short drive from the Falls to the nearest border post, where a Botswana guide will collect you for the day’s activities. Enjoy a morning boat cruise on the lazy Chobe River, admiring the wildlife on the floodplains before enjoying lunch and an afternoon game drive.

Plunge through the rapids of some of the best white water rafting in the world

The rapids below the falls are classified as Grade V, and nothing is quite as humbling as experiencing the sheer power of the water, armed with just a plastic oar and a lifejacket. The mighty river will propel you through a thrilling series of twists, turns, and heart-stopping drops, interspersed with stretches of calm where you can catch your breath and soak in the beauty of the towering gorges and verdant surrounds.

White water rafting is only guaranteed in August and September, though the season may vary depending on water levels.

Victoria Falls

Immerse yourself in a gourmet experience at the Dusty Road Township Dining Experience

Situated deep in the heart of the bustling Chinotimba township, not far from Victoria Falls town centre, Dusty Road offers a vibrant dining experience unlike any other. Amidst rustic tables and flickering lanterns, indulge your tastebuds with a tantalizing array of flavours crafted from locally sourced ingredients.

Victoria Falls

Chase that adrenaline rush on the flying fox/gorge swing/zipline/bungee jump

Victoria Falls is considered Africa’s adventure capital and is overflowing (literally?) with electrifying activities for thrill-seekers. The bungee jump off the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge is one of the world’s highest jumps. The gorge swing will pendulum you out over Batoka Gorge in an exhilarating zero-gravity experience. Intrepid travellers on the zipline (foefie slide) will reach speeds of over 100km/hr over the gorge, while those looking for a more sedate (but still vertigo-inducing) approach can opt for the flying fox.

Victoria Falls

Embark on a journey through time (and enjoy a scrumptious meal) on the Steam Train

Climb aboard the luxury steam train at Victoria Falls station and let it transport you to a bygone era of splendour. The train will stop on the Victoria Falls Bridge just in time to watch the sunset in one of the most magical spots in Africa. Then it is time to sit down to a gourmet dinner as the train chuffs its way through the bushveld.

Victoria Falls

Take to the skies and admire the scenery of Victoria Falls from above on the ‘Flight of Angels’ helicopter trip

David Livingstone was so taken with the beauty of the Falls that he famously suggested that “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”, so how better to appreciate them than from the sky? The helicopters have cleverly designed bubble-shaped windows to enjoy the panoramic views over the falls and surrounds.

Victoria Falls

Keep on track on a Bicycle Tour along the Zambezi River

Cycle along the Batoka Gorge, stopping every now and again to take in the breath-taking views before encountering the world-famous Big Tree (a massive baobab believed to be 3,500 years old) and cycle across the Victoria Falls Bridge, all in the company of an expert guide.

Dine out on the world-famous experience at The Boma

The Boma restaurant is about more than ordering dinner; it is a complete Zimbabwean cultural experience. Join the hand-washing ceremony before sampling the traditional beer to whet the appetite before dinner. During the varied meal of everything from venison to mopane worms, Tsonga dancers, storytellers and entertainers will hold the floor. Then take to the dance floor and show off your newly-mastered dance moves!

victoria falls tourist attractions

Saddle up and canter out into the wilderness on horseback (all experience levels are catered for!)

Exploring the wilderness on horseback is a unique experience, not least because the wild animals do not perceive the horses as a threat, allowing for unusually close encounters with otherwise shy ungulates such as kudu or impala. Spend the day tracking elephants and buffaloes in the deep shade of the Zambezi River’s riverine forests and perhaps even stop for a brief siesta during the day’s hottest hours.

Victoria Falls

Clip on a harness and swing out on a Canopy Tour

With a network of nine slides over the gorges, trails and a ropeway bridge through the hardwood forests, the Victoria Falls canopy tour offers some of the area’s best views. Furthermore, this experience is open to adventure-seekers of all ages, including families and groups.

Victoria Falls

Go curio and craft shopping and find the perfect souvenir from the perfect Victoria Falls holiday

Enthusiastic shoppers will find their senses overwhelmed on this daily tour of open-air markets, crochet halls, galleries and boutique stores selling handcrafted works of art. Admire the stone sculptures, wooden carvings, textiles, jewellery and crochet lovingly created by local artisans and pick out gifts for loved ones back home.
