Lying roughly 75 miles northeast of Atlanta , Athens sits on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rich in southern charm, it has a leafy suburban feel even in its Victorian-era downtown area.

A town since at least 1806 (although its police force didn’t come into being until 80 years later), Athens grew rich off the back of its cotton mills. The birthplace of both REM and the B-52’s, it has long had a great music scene.

Though the cotton industry is long gone, the town continues to thrive, largely thanks to its college population. Coming in at somewhere around 35,000 students, it ensures there’s always something new to do.

However, the focus of the collection is American paintings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including a significant collection of African American works.

Begun after a donation of 100 paintings in 1945, the museum’s walls are permanently hung with some of the US’s most important recent artists, including Georgia O’Keefe, known for her paintings of New Mexico.

2. State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Another institution of the University of Georgia, the State Botanical Garden spans more than 125 hectares along one bank of the Middle Oconee River.

Split into 11 distinct areas, there are around 5 miles of nature trails. There are also a series of paths that wind between the fountains of the formal garden and the cotton and tobacco plants of the Heritage Garden to name just a few.

A relaxing and colorful place to visit at any time of year, greenhouses protect its more delicate tropical plants, while a Hummingbird Trail marks 21 spots most frequented by these delightful creatures.

3. Downtown Athens

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Downtown Athens is the oldest part of the town, but remains the hub of modern-day Athens.

The area is dotted with elegant structures that combine British Victorian-era building practices with local designs typical of the southern United States.

Among them, the City Hall building of 1904 is perhaps the most grandiose. Its domed clocktower acts as a symbol of the town.

The stores in and around the downtown district in many ways encapsulate the city as a whole, offering everything from vintage finds to designer handbags.

The area also hosts a large range of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.

4. The Tree That Owns Itself

The Tree That Owns Itself is, well, a white oak that local legend has it maintains legal guardianship over itself and the ground within 2.5 metres of its trunk.

Though lost in the passage of time, the story seems to begin with a man by the name of William Jackson, hence the tree’s alternative name of the Jackson Oak.

The son of a former governor of Georgia, William is said to have gifted the tree ownership of itself as a way of protecting it, though legal scholars say no such law exists.

You’ll find the tree, alongside a plaque, on Dearing Street.

5. Terrapin Brewery

One of many small craft breweries in Athens, Terrapin sits in a modern building filled with shining stainless steel.

What makes a visit to the Terrapin Brewery all the more special is the fact that it’s a working brewery, with free tours taking place around the brew masters creating the latest batches of their unique beers.

You can try (and of course buy) them on site, in addition to a number of souvenirs of your time in Athens, such as special pint glasses.

If you’re into interesting beers, look out for the likes of the RecreationALE local IPA (India Pale Ale), and the passionfruit, orange and guava-flavoured Luau Krunkles. But be warned, the latter comes in at 6.5% alcohol by volume.

6. The Athens Double-Barrelled Cannon

Georgia was one of the confederate slave-owning states that ceded from the union, leading to the American Civil War.

A delicate and difficult time in the history of the United States, there was a scramble to invent new weaponry which might help the cause, including the double-barrelled cannon.

One of the few existing examples, the Athens cannon sits in front of the entrance to City Hall. Never used in anger, as it was deemed highly dangerous even by the standards of the time, it is one of Athens’ more unusual sights.

Its mouths face north, as a continued sign of southern defiance against the historic states of the union.

7. Sandy Creek Nature Center

The Sandy Creek Nature Center provides access to an area of Athens never built upon, offering an insight into the region’s local flora and fauna.

It covers around 90 hectares of untouched landscapes, containing 5 miles of walking trails.

Its education center has a variety of hands on exhibits suitable for children and adults, as well as aquaria with indigenous animals, and a planetarium too.

To make the most of the landscapes around the center, we recommend taking the 3-mile multi-use trail from the University of Georgia, which is known as the North Oconee River Greenway.

8. American Football

A solid American Football town, there’s no better way to get under the skin of Athens than by attending a game for yourself.

The local team are the Athens Bulldogs, and you’ll see their colours of black and red (as well as a variety of bulldog statues) all over town.

First playing in 1892, this college team play their home games in Sanford Stadium, an arena that would have many European sports teams weeping in jealousy.

Beyond the action on the gridiron, games are an excuse to experience the tailgate, when fans pull up outside the stadium for impromptu barbeques and beers before game time begins.

9. Amicalola Falls State Park

The land just outside of Athens is known for its majestic vistas, with Georgia’s Springer Mountains the southern end of the six-month and 2100-mile-long Appalachian Trail, made famous by Bill Bryson’s book A Walk in the Woods.

However, you don’t need to reserve half a year in order to enjoy these natural delights. Amicalola Falls State Park, part of the larger Chattahoochee National Forest, has a number of woodland footpaths that lead visitors to these beautiful falls . They cascade more than 200 metres over rocks down the mountainside.

The park lies around 2 hours northwest of Athens.

10. Live Music

When it comes to live music, Athens has no shortage of venues, and you can be pretty confident you’ll be able to find something taking place whatever the day of the week or month of the year.

Anyone in the town who knows their stuff will point you in the direct of the 40 Watt Club, which has been nurturing talent for almost 50 years now.

The historic Georgia Theatre concert hall straddles the divide, by hosting big names in its main space and bands with no pedigree at its rooftop bar. Elsewhere, The Foundry is another similar space blending craft beer, soul food, and great music.

Roughly 62 miles  north of Athens is Helen, a town which has the feeling of somewhere several thousand miles away in Germany’s Bavaria.

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Helen has been deliberately constructed to resemble a village of southern Germany, complete with steeply-pitched roofs, wooden balconies, and (carved) bears.

And though Helen may be a little kitsch to some, it does provide the perfect base for exploring all the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer.

Bring a swimming costume, and you can go tubing down the Chattahoochee River, while bring a bike and you can spend the day getting muddy among the many specially-designed trails.

12. Music History Walking Tours

Ever wondered where REM played their first gig? Or where the B-52’s got booed off stage? Then you should join one of Athens’ Music History Walking Tours.

Alternatively, guide yourself around its most famous sites, including the Morton Theatre. This is one of America’s first black owned and run entertainment spaces.

Rivalling Nashville in neighboring Tennessee for musical heritage, these street tours have no shortage of anecdotes.

And while tours tend to be quite heavily focused on the antics of the members of REM, who still live on and off in and around the town, there is plenty here to keep all music fans entertained.

13. Dahlonega Gold Museum

The Dahlonega Gold Museum is actually two attractions in one, since its exhibition space is housed within the oldest surviving county courthouse in Georgia.

This relatively small red brick building on the main square of Dahlonega dates from the 1830s. It contains mock-ups of the original judges’ deliberation chamber, court house (where films are now screened), and the jury room.

That said, the main attraction of the museum is the relics it contains from America’s first gold rush. Among its displays, visitors will find panning equipment, gold coins, and even gold as it’s found in nuggets.

The museum is about 1.5 hours from Athens.

14. Wolf Mountain Vineyards

On the southern edges of the Chattahoochee National Forest, a similar distance from Athens as Dahlonega, is Wolf Mountain Vineyards.

Producing award-winning handcrafted wines, the vineyard was founded in just 1999, making it one of America’s newest.

Producing only a few thousand cases of wine each year, tastings take place in a light and airy bar area. The cask room and wine cellar can also be visited.

Following traditional French styles in their winemaking, the vineyard blends a number of European grape varieties to create something unique to Wolf Mountain.

15. Oconee Hill Cemetery

Although cemeteries might not usually be high on your list of attractions when visiting a new city, an exception should be made in Athens.

The Oconee Hill Cemetery is a historic one, and as a result has tombs and gravestones rich in the Victoria fashion of intricate carving and ironwork.

A paradise for photographers, and a beautiful place to take a respectful stroll, it dates to the middle of the nineteenth century.

It is located opposite the University of Georgia campus, which visitors are also free to explore.

Instead, you’ll gently float along the water, taking in the scenic views and looking for the river’s natural inhabitants, like turtles and otters.

Want to do both but don’t think you could do it all in one day? Broad River Outpost offers campsites that are free to use for their paddling guests. Come to do a scenic float one day, then camp out and wake up the next morning to try the whitewater rapids.

4. Explore Sandy Creek Nature Center

Spending a day at the Sandy Creek Nature Center is one of the best things to do in Athens, GA, especially if you’re a nature lover or are traveling with children. This nature preserve, which is free to visit, covers 225 acres of woodlands and wetlands, with 12 trails covering four miles for guests to explore. These trails offer a look at the creatures who call this area home, as well as a look at Athens’ past as you walk past historical landmarks like the ruins of the Georgia Brick Company.

But perhaps what makes the Sandy Creek Nature Center so special is that you’re not left on your own to explore. To really understand what you’re seeing and learn more about the animals and their habitats, the nature preserve provides binoculars, identifiers, and educational trail packs, which you can check out for free at the Education & Visitor Center.

While you’re in the Education & Visitor Center, you can learn much more about the biomes around you. Stop by the Exhibit Hall, where you’ll find the Interactive Learning Centers, which explore the connections between people and nature in coastal, wetland, urban, agricultural, and woodland environments. 

Throughout the exhibit hall, you’ll see marine aquariums, freshwater ponds, a planetarium, and a litany of live animals and interactive elements to really immerse yourself in the Exhibit Hall’s lessons. Outside, you’ll discover even more fun for little ones with the Nature Playscape, a playground designed with nature at its core.

5. Enjoy a Concert at the Georgia Theatre

Want to discover Athens’ music scene? Head to the Georgia Theatre for an evening out. Seeing a show at the Georgia Theatre is one of the coolest things to do in Athens and a can’t-miss experience. 

This standing-room-only venue has been a part of downtown Athens since 1935 when it initially opened as the Elite Theatre. Though the theater was greatly devastated by a fire in 2009, Athens just couldn’t let this treasure go, so it was rebuilt and opened in 2011.

As you approach the venue, you’ll first pass by the Athens Music Walk of Fame. Inside, you can head on in to see your show, or you can venture up to the rooftop, where you’ll find a bar with stunning views of the downtown area. Grab a drink or a cup of coffee and enjoy the panorama. Performers often also grace the rooftop stage, giving you a show with your drinks. 

6. Admire the State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Sitting atop 313 beautiful acres, visiting the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is one of the best Athens activities. Operated by the University of Georgia, this garden, which is free to visit, is just a short drive from downtown Athens. With numerous collections to explore, there’s always something to do and see in this botanical garden.

Over in the conservatory, you’ll discover unique plants that you can only see in equatorial climates. You’ll also see and learn about herbs and how they have affected cultures throughout time.

There are five miles of nature trails to explore, where you’ll see plants native to the region. You’ll also spy native plants in the Dunson Native Flora Garden, the oldest garden here, which is home to over 300 species native to the southeastern US.

Other gardens include the Shade Garden, which is divided into sections and named for each of the Garden Club of Georgia Districts; the International Garden, with plants from around the world; and the Heritage Garden, featuring heirloom flowers with cultural significance to Georgia. Little ones will love the Alice H. Richards Children’s Garden, which offers interactive elements like garden plots with edible plants, a treehouse, a fossil wall, and a granite map of Georgia.

7. See the Exhibits at the Georgia Museum of Art

The museum houses a permanent collection of more than 10,000 works of art, but you’ll also find several temporary exhibits here throughout the year, such as rotating exhibitions of work by women sculptors in the Jane and Harry Willson Sculpture Garden. Inside the Georgia Museum of Art, you’ll discover Renaissance and Baroque art, art collected throughout American history, showcases of African-American artwork, and much more. 

As the museum initially began with a donation of 100 American paintings, American artwork remains at the heart of the Georgia Museum of Art. In addition to painting and sculpture, you’ll also discover unique artifacts collected throughout time, from hand-carved furniture to silver servingware.

8. Go to a Show at the Morton Theatre

Seeing a show at the famous Morton Theatre belongs on your Athens bucket list. Located in downtown Athens, this historic theater was one of the first and the oldest surviving vaudeville theaters in the US to be built, owned, and operated by an African-American man. Monroe “Pink” Morton created the theater, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places, in 1910. 

Throughout its history, it’s been more than a theater. It’s been a gathering place for the African-American community in Athens, having also housed many of Athens’ Black doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and other professionals. Today, it continues to be a place for the Athens community to gather, with the theater hosting numerous events of all kinds throughout the year.

9. Find the Dawg Sculptures

If you’ve seen a Georgia Bulldogs game, you’ve likely already seen Uga, the team’s live English Bulldog mascot. But did you know that there are more bulldogs hanging out around the city? Searching for these statues is easily one of the most unique things to do in Athens, GA!

Dating back to 2003, these statues were originally a public art display called “We Let the Dawgs Out,” the brainchild of the Athens-Oconee Junior Women’s Club. Painted by local artists, the original three dozen pups showed off the many different sides of Athens. 

The project ended in 2010, with the statues being auctioned off to support AIDS Athens. But many of the original figures, as well as some new additions, can still be found around the city. 

Standing proud at four feet tall, these fiberglass statues all have their own unique personality. Snap a selfie with the sharply-dressed Archie or swing by to visit Dorothy, decorated to look like a service dog. Uga may be the Georgia Bulldogs’ mascot, but these dawgs are Athens’ unofficial mascot.

10. Visit Bear Hollow Zoo

Located within Memorial Park, Bear Hollow Zoo is more than a zoo. It’s a place for animals with nowhere else to go. This Athens attraction, which is free to visit, is home to creatures who are considered non-releaseable. These critters are facing either physical or behavioral challenges that make them no longer fit to live in the wild. 

Instead, Bear Hollow Zoo has taken them in to protect and rehabilitate them. These animals and their keepers teach visitors about just what these creatures are and how we can do our best to protect and preserve them and their natural habitats. 

Watch the river otters play, marvel at the strength and majesty of the black bears, check out the slithery snakes in the Reptile House, and much more. To take in more natural beauty of Memorial Park, explore the Birchmore Trail and Lake Walkway Loop after you leave the zoo.

11. Wander through the Georgia Museum of Natural History

Found on the University of Georgia’s campus, the Georgia Museum of Natural History may not be the largest natural history museum around. But it is still one of the most unique things to do in Athens and is well worth a stop if you’re nearby. It’s also free to visit!

Though relatively small, the museum has an impressive number of artifacts, with 11 distinct collections covering anthropology, arthropods, botany, geology, herpetology, ichthyology, invertebrates, mammalogy, mycology, ornithology, and zooarchaeology. You can explore these collections through the museum’s exhibits. 

While children are invited to explore, it’s important to note that this museum isn’t particularly child-friendly, and you won’t find interactive exhibits that frequently entertain young children at other museums. While children under five are invited to visit, the museum is recommended for children older than five.

12. Take a Workshop at the Lyndon House Arts Center

The Lyndon House Arts Center is much more than an art museum. It’s a place filled with art, history, and education, and spending time here is one of the top Athens activities. 

Located in downtown Athens, the arts center began with the historic Ware-Lyndon House , which functions today as a museum that tells the history of those who once inhabited the home. While the Ware-Lyndon House, which is found on the National Register of Historic Places, remains the centerpiece of the Lyndon Arts Center, a 33,000-square-foot addition was built upon the home, which serves as a place to celebrate and partake in art.

The Lyndon House Arts Center, which offers free admission, showcases unique artwork throughout its galleries. 13. Stop by the Tree That Owns Itself

Love historical oddities? Be sure you stop by the Tree That Owns Itself, one of the strangest and coolest Athens attractions. 

How exactly could a tree own itself? You’ll have to ask Colonel William H. Jackson. The story, which was first printed in a local newspaper in 1890, goes that Jackson was so fond of the tree that he deeded the tree possession of itself, as well as all the land within eight feet of its trunk.

This beautiful white oak sits on the corner of Dearing and Finley Streets in downtown Athens. But the original tree, which was estimated to be around 400 years old, no longer exists, as it fell over during a wind storm in 1942. 

Not wanting the story to end with the tree, the Junior Ladies Garden Club gathered acorns from the site and began growing another generation of the Tree That Owns Itself. Four years later, the club planted a sapling grown from the original tree, which now sits in the same spot its parent once lived.

14. Kayak Down the Oconee River

Kayaking down the Middle Oconee River is one of the most fun things to do in Athens, and the best way to do it is with Big Dogs on the River . Whether you’re new to kayaking or an experienced paddler, this kayak rental company makes it easy by providing you with everything you need, including equipment and transportation, to spend a day out on the river.

Big Dogs on the River is located along the Middle Oconee River, which is a mostly easygoing stream, providing a relaxing day out on the water. From their location, they’ll take you for just a 15-minute shuttle ride upstream, where you’ll float back down the river toward the Big Dogs’ facilities at your own leisure.

Back at Big Dogs, you can spend the afternoon hanging out at their Cabana. Play horseshoes or volleyball, listen to live music, or have a picnic. A day with Big Dogs is a day filled with fun and adventure.

15. Build Your Own Food Tour

Athens may be a college town, but it’s also a perfect place for foodies. But as a smaller city than Georgia’s major cities, like Atlanta, it’s harder to find designated food tours. John Mayer fans may recognize the interior of this downtown Art Deco-style theatre. It’s where the former Georgian filmed the video for his hit “No Such Thing.” Other musicians who’ve made stops here? The Police, the Alabama Shakes, Beck, David Byrne, Run the Jewels, the Dave Matthews Band, and Gregg Allman. While the theatre was badly damaged in a fire in 2009, it’s since been fully restored and hosts local and touring musicians of all genres, and it's not uncommon to see local musicians among the crowds. Be sure to purchase tickets in advance and arrive early to grab drinks and dinner on the theatre’s rooftop restaurant, which offers stunning views of downtown Athens.

As a college town, Athens is home to several notable bars, so it's no surprise the city also has a thriving craft beer scene. Creature Comforts has a taproom and brewery downtown, where visitors can take a tour and then sample flights or enjoy drafts and bottles of the brand's signature beers like the citrusy Tropicália IPA as well as seasonal releases and cocktails, all in a restored 1940's-era warehouse. Terrapin Brewing Co. offers a short facility tour and sample flights, beers on tap, branded merchandise ranging from hats to dog leashes, and several special events like live music at its facility on Newton Bridge Road. Other local breweries open to the public include Southern Brewing Company  and Akademia .

Founded with 100 significant American paintings by Hoer, Warhol, Wyeth, and others, this small museum operated by the University of Georgia now has African pottery, Japanese woodblocks, Italian Renaissance paintings, and American decorative arts among the 13 galleries in its permanent collection. The museum also hosts several special exhibitions from multimedia and interdisciplinary artists and regular film screenings, gallery talks, art workshops, yoga classes, and lectures. Note the gallery is only open Thursdays through Sundays, and admission is free.

Play at Sandy Creek Park

This 782-acre recreational area north of the city and surrounding the 260-acre Lake Chapman offers a variety of outdoor, family-friendly activities from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. every day of the week except Monday. Hike or walk along 20 miles of trails through lakeshore and scenic hardwood forest, play a round of disc golf, swim or fish from public beachfront, or ride horses on the designated equestrian trail. The park also has a boat ramp, off-leash dog parks, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas, and kayak and canoe rentals. Admission is $2 and free for seniors 65 and over and children under four.

Visit the Georgia Museum of Natural History

The state of Georgia has some of the country's most diverse plant and animal life, all on display at the Georgia Museum of Natural History. Explore fourteen different collections ranging from archeology to paleontology and a photography guide of Southeastern birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The museum is free and open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Take an Athens Music History Tour

From R.E.M. to Widespread Panic and the B-52's, Athens has long been a hub for contemporary music. Take a self-guided or hosted tour to learn more about the city's most significant spots, from Weaver D's Fine Foods, a soul food restaurant whose slogan, “Automatic for the People,” was adopted by REM, to Oconee Hill Cemetery, where notable Athens musicians are buried, including Widespread Panic’s Vic Chesnut and the B-52’s Ricky Wilson. Other tour highlights include the 40 Watt Club, Wuxtry Records, the railroad trestle in Dudley Park featured on the back cover of R.E.M.’s 1983 debut album "Murmur," and the Morton Building, which housed one of the country's first Black-built, owned, and operated vaudeville theatres and is still open today.

Bordered by the University of Georgia to the South, Dougherty Street to the north, Pulaski Street to the west, and Foundry Street to the east, downtown Athens is the city's commercial, entertainment, and nightlife hub. Start with shopping at the trendy women's boutique Cheeky Peach or for vintage threads at Dynamite Clothing, thumb through records at the independent record store Wuxtry's (fun fact: both Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Danger Mouse worked behind the counter here), or settle in with a cup of java at local coffee chain Jittery Joe's. Then dine on small plates at chef Hugh Acheson's Mediterranean-inspired spot The National, enjoy happy hour at the more low-key Seabear Oyster Bar, or eat classic diner fare at The Grill, which is open 24/7. Finish the evening with a show at one of the area's many music venues like the Georgia Theatre, Classic Center, or 40 Watt.

Visit the Athens Institute for Contemporary Art

The Athens Institute for Contemporary Art (ATHICA) is an independent, non-profit gallery dedicated to local, national, and international contemporary artists. The gallery presents seven exhibitions annually and hosts guest performances, lectures, children's events, artist lectures, and other events. Think modern dance performances, contemporary photography, poetry readings, and more, all housed in the repurposed Leathers Building on Pulaski Street, across the railroad tracks and a few blocks from downtown. Admission is free, and the gallery is open Wednesday through Friday during current exhibitions only, so check the gallery website before your visit.

Bike and Hike Through Nature at Oconee Forest Park

Located behind the University of Georgia's intramural fields, this 60-acre nature preserve is both a hand-on research and educational laboratory for the college's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources as well as a public park. Bike or hike through miles or dirt and gravel trails in a 100-year old forest populated by oak and hickory trees, tulip poplars, and a 15-acre lake. Bring binoculars to spot birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat, or sign up for one of the university's nature classes. Trails are dog-friendly (on leash only) and open daily from sunrise to sunset. Note there is an ADA accessible boardwalk and bridge located at the parking lot near the tennis courts.

Attend a Show at the Morton Theatre

One of the country's first Black-built, owned, and operated vaudeville theatres, the Morton hosted acts like Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and Duke Ellington in its heyday. The now historic landmark is still operating, offering regular events ranging from musical theatre productions to film documentaries to dance performances from local arts organizations. Check the events calendar in advance to book a ticket.

Shop at the Athens Farmers Market

Held at Bishop Park on Saturday from early May through mid-December, the Athens Farmers Market features more than 20 local vendors selling everything from seasonal produce and meat from nearby farms to pressed juices, hand-made pasta, and fresh-cut flowers. Grab a cup of java from 1000 Faces Coffee or a sweet or savory snack from Holy Crepe while strolling through the stalls, which also include a rotating list of arts and crafts artisans offering ceramics and textiles, paintings, soap, jewelry, and apparel. The organization also hosts an annual holiday market in December, which features local vendors and artists, live music, and other seasonal events.

The Best Things To Do In Athens, Georgia, That Go Beyond Football

With a grown-up food scene, a vibrant downtown, many live music haunts, and unmatched school spirit, Athens, Georiga, has it all.

I like to pass the time on drives back to my college town by devising an itinerary based entirely on where I plan to eat and what I plan to do. No matter the purpose behind the trip to Athens, Georgia, whether a football-rival meeting between the hedges or a visit to a former professor's class, my focus is always the things that make it the most unique college town in the South, many of which are apart from school and football.

I start out by visualizing a map of the city. Punctuated by intersections I once crossed often, the streets easily link together in my mind to form a packed itinerary for a short trip. Here are the best things to do in Athens, Georgia, for the perfect weekend in one of the South's best college towns.

Day 1: What To Do

Stock up on artisanal chocolate.

After taking the University of Georgia's exit, I'm led to the familiar intersection of Lumpkin Street, Milledge Avenue, and Milledge Circle. This crossroads is the heart of the historic Five Points area, and that means the first stop is Condor Chocolates for a homemade pick-me-up. Influenced by their mother's Ecuadorean roots, brothers Nick and Peter Dale launched their first location on Lumpkin Street to make their chocolate confections. Their selection of artisanal truffles, bars, and other delights is vast, but their sipping chocolate and affogato are my go-to indulgences.

Go Shopping Downtown

With well over 100 bars, restaurants, and shops hugging the small and walkable city-style blocks, Athens' historic downtown is more alive on an average Monday than many towns are on a Saturday night. Daylight hours see UGA college students filing in and out of various cafes, as locals pop into shops like  Archer Paper Goods  (a stationery lover's heaven).

Step inside  Wuxtry Records for instant nostalgia. It's the oldest still-operating record store in Georgia, and the small store on East Clayton Street downtown is still packed with crates of vinyl records. Lead guitarist Peter Buck of Athen's most famous band R.E.M. even worked there for a short time. 

Grab Dinner in Five Points

Depending on my hotel check-in time, I may scoot a few doors down to one of the newer kids on the Five Points block. The Expat , situated in a quaint 1930s cottage, features a menu of Italian favorites, and the cleverly crafted cocktail list and friendly neighborhood service keep me coming back. The Royal Peasant , a British-style pub, is a great spot to catch a game or relax on the patio with their Bits and Bobs, like baba ghanoush or house-made chips and garlic oil.

Entertain Yourself with Downtown's Unique Activities

Once the sun goes down, innocent errands turn into late-night shenanigans. Spontaneous souls could end up dancing at the pop-up silent disco wearing big glowing headphones next to dozens of strangers; watching an indie film at Ciné , a nonprofit art house opened in an old tire-recap building; or sipping at the bar of Manhattan Cafe next to someone reading a Cormac McCarthy novel while others sway in the back corner next to the tattered jukebox with handwritten track cards.

Grab a Drink in the "Cool" Part of Town

Located adjacent to downtown Athens, Normaltown is where you'll find the townies. The old-school strip of storefronts is now frequented by the impossibly cool. Bars here— The Old Pal , Hi-Lo Lounge , and Normal Bar—are the grown-up, hipper version of those downtown.

Day 2: What To Do

Embark on a local food tour.

The next day, I love taking an early outing to Independent Baking Company for a croissant or cinnamony Morning Roll. Right next to the famous five-point intersection, locals line up for fresh loaves, coffee, and pastries to go. I'll head toward campus via Lumpkin Street for lunch on the patio at Cali-N-Tito's . The beloved BYOB, Latin-Caribbean-inspired cafe is in a prime spot within walking distance of South Campus and tailgates alike.

If I'm lucky, I'll pass by an event that has called in the Lil' Ice Cream Dude to serve frozen treats from his Cool World mobile stand. Kid entrepreneur Beau Shell has been scooping since age 8 and has created an impressive ice-cream empire. I pass the corner of Sanford Stadium and swear I can hear the tune of "Glory, Glory to Old Georgia!" being played by the lone trumpeter inside. Just like that, my school spirit is reignited.

On game weekends, I try to avoid the busy corridor of Milledge Avenue from Five Points to Broad Street, as it's the main thoroughfare of Greek life here. Past the historic houses lining Milledge Avenue, I turn onto Baxter Street and make my way to Home.Made , a supper club turned hot spot known for Southern cuisine with a modern spin. Even if I can't stay long, I pop in to grab cheese straws and pepper-jelly pecans for the road.

Grab a Drink at the Hometown Brewery

At the end of the day, I venture back downtown to West Hancock Avenue for a bite at The National . Although the globally inspired menu changes to reflect the seasonal bounty of northeast Georgia farmers, I've never had a meal here that didn't make me feel right at home. Across the street is Creature Comforts Brewing Co. , featuring the famed Tropicália IPA.

The beer in question is a citrusy little number with hoppy notes. Due to production constraints, it garnered a cult following—borderline mania—when it was first released in 2014 and was even featured in box-office success Avengers: Endgame . And it still remains the most popular brew in town.

Enjoy the Bustling Farmers' Market

On off-season Saturdays, the Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park is bustling. I might snag a sip of Juju from The Plate Sale . Splitting time between Athens and Atlanta, Shyretha and Michael Sheats have made a name for themselves in the food and farming industries of North Georgia. If you can make it to a Plate Sale pop-up dinner, you won't regret it.

Catch Plenty of Live Music

Since Athens is home to many famous bands, including R.E.M, The B-52's, the Indigo Girls, Widespread Panic, and Drive-By Truckers, you'll find many historic music haunts like the  40 Watt Club  and the  Georgia Theatre , and you're bound to be able to catch a concert going on in those venues, as well as many others, throughout the weekend. You can also visit the rooftop of the Georgia Theatre for cocktails, snacks, great views of downtown, and occasionally late-night DJ sets.

Don't Miss These Snack Spots

Afterward, I head to the Boulevard District, home to Maepole and White Tiger Gourmet , two off-the-beaten-path lunch places. Maepole, known for its plant-forward and gluten-free menu, lets you choose a base (like mashed sweet potatoes or quinoa), a protein, two sides, and a sauce. It approaches Southern food in a healthy, wholesome way. White Tiger is my pick for barbecue and burgers, but the vegetarian offerings are impressive too. It's housed in a 100-year-old building that once served as a grocery store, so the charm goes far beyond the smoked meats. I finish out the night at Seabear Oyster Bar , where a dozen bivalves on the half shell are best accompanied by seasoned oyster crackers.

Day 3: What To Do

Enjoy a slow morning (with fried chicken).

A final sleep at the Graduate Athens hotel wraps up my weekend, but not without a trip to Avid Bookshop to browse the shelves. If it's Sunday, I'll mosey over to Food for the Soul for lunch. This eatery makes some of the best fried chicken and slow-cooked vegetables outside of Atlanta. For more fried chicken, head to iconic Athens spot  Weaver D's . The owner's tagline "Automatic for the People!" later became the album title for one of R.E.M.'s most famed records.

With both my belly and my mind full from memories of a weekend well spent, I hunker down for my journey home. But if "Old Lady Luck" is on my side, it won't be long until I return, because there's one thing all Dawgs know: All roads lead to Athens.

Spread across 313 acres, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a university-run attraction that offers visitors a great excuse to spend a few hours getting to know more about the region's native plant life. Highlights include an annual/perennial garden, the dahlia garden, and the must-see heritage garden , which feature plants that thrive in Georgia's humid subtropical climate.

Fruit-bearing species, including pear and apple trees, are also plentiful. So, too, are cash crops, including cotton, tobacco, and peanuts, all of which have played a significant role in the state's economy. There's also an international garden that includes herb and medicinal sections.

But don't limit your time here to just wandering the gardens. The attraction also features a five-mile network of nature trails , making it extremely easy to draw out your visit. Those traveling with kids will want to also include the fun 2.5-acre children's garden on their itinerary.

Dominating the University of Georgia grounds, Sanford Stadium has been the scene of exciting football action since it opened in 1929. Though now substantially larger and capable of holding crowds of just shy of 100,000 spectators, the 9th largest stadium in the US has managed to retain its college-town feel, especially on game days.

Whether you're a sports enthusiast or not, it's an impressive site and well worth exploring, even if all you do is circumnavigate its perimeter as part of a self-guided campus sightseeing tour. If you do get in for a game, or as part of an organized tour, you'll soon learn why the campus views have led to it being named the most beautiful on-campus stadium in the USA.

Also worth a look, the 10,000 seat Stegeman Coliseum is home to the university's gymnastics and basketball teams.

Undoubtedly one of the top free things to do in Athens for families, a visit to Bear Hollow Zoo is an enjoyable outing for all ages. Home to a variety of native animals unable to be returned to the wild, this small zoo features a series of elevated viewing platforms and walkways that allow you a bird's-eye view of the critters in its care.

Set within the expansive Memorial Park, a pleasant 72-acre green space with pleasant walking trails that's just a few minutes away from the botanical garden, the zoo allows kids to get a relatively up-close look at black bears, otters, bobcats, owls, and even alligators housed in as natural a setting as possible.

Bounded by the University of Georgia to the south, Dougherty Street to the north, and Pulaski and Foundry Streets to the west and east respectively, Downtown Athens is a great place to explore on foot and is chock-full of interesting things do. Here, you'll find some of the city's oldest homes, many of them classic examples of the antebellum style, along with historic old theaters, churches, and places of business.

It's also home to some of the oldest of the university's buildings, with the campus having grown exponentially southwards in the more than two centuries since it was established. Set out in an easy-to-follow grid pattern; you'll not easily get lost, especially if you keep the tall dome of the old City Hall in sight.

It's a vibrant and bustling area, particularly on weekends when students venture off campus. Shopping and dining opportunities are plentiful, with cafés and coffee shops, such as the excellent Zombie Coffee and Donuts offering a fancy take on an old favorite sweet treat. And for a great lunch or dinner, try the Porterhouse Grill 's tasty buttermilk chicken, delicious at any time of day.

Located on the University of Georgia campus, the Georgia Museum of Art is a must visit, and yet another example of the very positive influence the university has had on this lovely city. Established in 1945, the museum is home to a sizable permanent collection that features over 18,000 artworks from a variety of disciplines.

Notable among its collection are works by American painters, decorative arts from the Southern states, as well as contributions from African American artists. There are also a number of interesting paintings in the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Of special interest is the sculpture garden with its focus on the creations of women artists. While admission is free, advance timed ticketing is necessary , so plan accordingly. Guided tours are also available.

Since it opened in 1978, the Georgia Theatre has hosted some of the biggest names in American pop, rock, folk, and alternative music. Some of the best and brightest, such as the B-52s and REM, even got their start here in Athens before reaching the top of the charts. International recording stars like The Police also performed here.

The building itself dates back to the early 1900s, when it served as home to the university basketball team, later spending time as a record store, a Masonic lodge, and a furniture store before finding new life as a music venue.

Just one of a number of important musical landmarks in the city, the venue is included in a fun self-guided walk, the Athens Music History Walking Tour , that's well worth doing. Check out the venue's rooftop restaurant, too, for its great views over Downtown Athens.

The University of Georgia grounds cover no less than 767 acres, much of which can be explored by visitors. Before tackling the university's impressive network of walking trails, however, pay a visit to their excellent Visitor Center on College Station Road. While it's a doable 40-minute walk from Downtown Athens, there's ample visitor parking on campus for those wanting to save their energy for the trails.

The visitor center offers plenty of detail regarding the university's history, with helpful staff and students on hand to answer questions and provide tips about the best places to visit on campus. Self-guided walking tours will take you past important campus landmarks, including Sanford Stadium, the interesting Trial Gardens, and the Georgia Museum of Natural History, among others.

Located in a cobble-stoned neighborhood on the corner of Dearing and South Finley Streets stands one of the most unusual of Athens' many interesting tourist attractions: the Tree That Owns Itself. Legend has it that this tall white oak was granted ownership of itself and the eight-foot parcel of land on which its stands by its original owner in 1890.

While apparently this is the "son" of the original tree, planted after the original oak was blown over in 1942, the plaques at its base make for compelling reading. And sure enough, the legacy remains uncontested to this day, ensuring the site's preservation.

Another of the city's believe-it-or-not-style attractions, the Athens Double-Barreled Cannon is located off College Avenue in the downtown core. Designed and built in 1863 by a local entrepreneur hoping to win a contract from the Confederates for his invention, this interesting looking weapon never actually saw service.

After failing to impress during field tests (but apparently managing to kill a cow), the project was shelved, and the unique but unusable cannon given to the City of Athens for display purposes. You'll find it located outside City Hall, ominously pointing northward.

Although located just outside the city's downtown core and best reached by car, the Lyndon House Arts Center is well worth a visit. As well as featuring frequently changing exhibits of contemporary art, this large gallery offers workshops and learning opportunities in a variety of artistic endeavors. Of special interest to families is the children's wing, which features fun activities and programs for kids of all ages.

The building itself is set in a pleasant garden. The facility also hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year. A gift shop is located on-site.

Be sure to allow time to visit the historic Ware-Lyndon House, an attractive Greek Revival style home dating from the 1840s.

Built in 1842, TRR Cobb House is considered one of the best preserved and most unique homes to have survived Northeast Georgia's antebellum period.

Located on Prince Avenue and included on the USA's National Register of Historic Places , this unusual octagon house now serves as a museum focusing on the life of the former politician, a controversial figure who was a strong supporter of the Southern Nationalism movement that ultimately saw the formation of the Confederate States of America.

This perfectly preserved home offers a fascinating glimpse into this period of time in US history through a mix of authentic period furnishings, décor, and displays.

In addition to its attractive downtown area, Athens features a number of other interesting neighborhoods that are certainly worth exploring. Most are easy to get to from pretty much anywhere in the city and offer great excuses to get out and walk.

Normaltown , named after a former educational center, is a trendy spot frequented by students and creative types and offers an eclectic array of shopping and dining experiences. It's an easy 30 minutes' walk northwest of the downtown core.

Considered one of Athens' poshest neighborhoods, Five Points derives its name from the busy intersection of Milledge Avenue and Lumpkin Street. But don't let this fact put you off. Park the car and explore this neighborhood of leafy streets and large old mansions, many of them university frat houses.

The real draw here, though, are the chic boutique shops and restaurants that together make up a village-like community that's as popular with students as it is the locals. Great places to dine include The Expat a nd The Café on Lumpkin .

The Five Points area is also home to one of the best B&Bs in Georgia, the luxurious ATH|BNB, The Rushmore . This former frat house is literally steps away from the Five Points intersection and makes an excellent base from which to explore the vicinity, as well as the university and its many attractions, all just a short walk away.

The most famous Athenian neighbourhood of Plaka is definitely a top attraction for visitors. Its picturesque streets, historic landmarks and lively shops make it a must-see. Just be prepared for the crowds.

What a difference a decade makes. The arrival of the landmark Acropolis Museum and the pedestrian walkway linking the city’s ancient monuments has seen this historic neighbourhood emerge as one of Athens’ most fashionable postcodes.

Layers of history intersect at the city’s hub of commerce and craftsmanship.

The heart of modern Greece beats in the historic centre of Athens — but contrary to what you’d think, it has little to do with ancient ruins.

The Athenian intelligentsia have long settled in this central neighbourhood of leafy squares and lively cafes. Now the hipsters are moving in too.

Rebels with, and quite often without, a cause have earned Exarchia a reputation as the turf of anarchists and radicals.

Gritty, dense and lined with auto repair shops, Neos Kosmos was a silent blue collar neighbourhood you’d never go to unless you lived there. But when art came to town, a transformation began, and today this up-and-coming neighbourhood is coming alive.

Head off the beaten track to Kolonos and Sepolia, two low-key residential areas that have yet to catch up with the fast-paced tempo of downtown Athens.

The Spirit of Rush is Georgia's premier Rush tribute band, bringing the music of Rush to life with accuracy and passion. Spanning the eras of the prog trio's catalog, TSOR astounds fans of all ages with soaring musicianship and unwavering dedication. The Spirit of Rush formed in 2013 after playing together at a jam session in Roswell, GA. The crowd went wild and the rest is history. The band brings not only the familiar sounds of hit songs, but also deep tracks for the longtime fans. Combined, the four members of the band have thousands of hours of professional live performance experience. Due to the complexity of Rush’s music, The Spirit of Rush spent months honing the set list before taking their performance to the public. The band has a loyal and devoted fan base as well as a mission to keep the spirit of Rush music alive!
