Kuala Selangor is located northwest of Selangor, Malaysia, at the estuary of the Selangor River. To travel to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur, you can go by car, by bus, or by tour.

Car is the most convenient means of transport if you want to travel to Kuala Selangor from KL.

The reason is that Grab is very common in Kuala Selangor town, thus, it’s inconvenient to get around the town if you don’t have your own car. In addition, you can only see fireflies and blue tears in the evening (the tour ends at 8 pm), if you want to go back to KL right after that, then driving your car is always the best option. Otherwise, you have to stay in Kuala Selangor for a night.

If you want to rent a private car (with a driver) to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur, c ontact me via Whatsapp +60 149.776.712 (Mai) or my Instagram for the best price 💸 .

If you have more time to explore, then you can consider a bus.

From KL, you catch bus No.100 operated by Selangor Omnibus which departs from HAB Lebuh Pudu (Pudu Street bus hub). It will take around 2 hours to reach Kuala Selangor.

Be noticed that buses take a longer time, have low frequency, and do not run at night.

To be honest, transportation is a huge concern for non-local Malaysians as public transportation is not convenient in Kuala Selangor. Thus, it’s a good choice to join a tour, especially for foreign tourists.

There is a tour that includes a round-trip transfer from & to Kuala Lumpur City Center, admission to blue tears, sky mirror, eagle feeding, fireflies, and Sekinchan (all are optional).

Here is the link to book this tour: Kuala Selangor tour from Kuala Lumpur.

A sky mirror is a seabed that has a mirror-like reflection of the sky when exposed during low tide. It lasts for only 3-4 hours and a few days per month. Therefore, when you book a sky mirror tour, the tour operator will provide you with different timings and dates to choose from.

To see the sky mirror, the only way to go is by speedboat. It takes around 30 minutes to drive from the Kuala Selangor jetty. Departure time is around 10 am – 11 am.

Ticket price : 70RM/adult

Eagle feeding

In Kuala Selangor, you can witness red-backed sea eagles in Pasir Penambang – near the estuary of the Selangor River. There will be around 30 eagles flying around, together with a flock of small birds. The scene is spectacular, especially during sunset. DO NOT MISS this exciting activity when traveling to Kuala Selangor.

When the sky is dark, fireflies start to glow along the banks of the Selangor River in order to find mates. There are thousands of fireflies flying around which produce a fascinating scene in the dark.

Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park in Kuala Selangor is known as the largest firefly colony in the world. Therefore, it is a must-visit attraction when you travel to Kuala Selangor.

Blue tears are a natural nighttime phenomenon caused by a glowing microscopic creature called Dinoflagellates. Normally, you will find blue tears across the seashore, but in Kuala Selangor, you can witness it on a speedboat in the estuary of the Selangor River.

The best time to see blue tears in Kuala Selangor is on the first 3 days of the lunar month. It is said that during these days, dark skies and high tides can make it clearer to see blue tears.

Bukit Malawati

kuala-selangor-bukit-malawati

Bukit Malawati was a hill that houses the remains of the Kota Malawati fort, a lighthouse, and the Selangor Historical Museum.

The fort was founded by Sultan Ibrahim in the late 1700s, but it was captured by the Dutch and renamed Fort Altingburg. In the 1800s, it was devastated during the Selangor Civil War.

In 1794, the Dutch built a lighthouse and named it Altingsburgh.

Kuala Selangor District Historical Museum was originally an Official Residence of the Kuala Selangor District Office. The museum tells the history of Kuala Selangor since its establishment with 7 sections displaying all the relics and pictures of the past.

In addition, visitors also come to Bukit Malawati to see the silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques . You can buy food (such as peanuts) to feed them as well.

Note: During weekdays, you can drive your own car to the hill. But at the weekend, it’s not allowed, you will need to take a tram instead. The Tram ticket is RM5/adult and RM3/child. The ticket counter is at the gate.

During my Kuala Selangor trip, I had seafood in 2 restaurants:

River View Seafood Restaurant:

  • This restaurant is a pretty well-known halal restaurant
  • It has a great view of the river
  • The taste was okay, and acceptable

Sin Hai Ping Seafood:

  • This is a more affordable option, and I was really impressed with their crab porridge – fresh and sweet.
  • The staff was attentive and friendly as well.

Besides that, I also had some really yummy bak kut teh at Hai Ka Lang restaurant. You can definitely consider going there as well.

Day 1: Sky mirror, Eagle feeding, fireflies, blue tears

We booked a boat tour package from D’tour company which includes all these activities. Here you can see the itinerary of the package.

Schedule for 4in1 Combo day tour.

  • Sky Mirror: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • ATV Experience: 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM
  • Eagle: Around 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Fireflies+Blue Tears: 7:15 PM – 8:30 PM

Around 8.45 pm will finish the tour.

Day 2: Bukit Malawati – Feed monkeys and visit Kuala Selangor District Historical Museum.

NOTE: It’s entirely possible to squeeze the itinerary for a day trip. You can visit Bukit Malawati either in the early morning or around noon. However, it can be a little tiring. Personally, I took a 2-day-1-night trip to Kuala Selangor because I wanted to have a relaxing weekend trip.

You can book either 1 single activity or the whole package. There are different packages offered too, but I highly recommend you to book the full package including sky mirror, Eagle feeding, fireflies, and blue tears (normally, 5 minutes ATV for free is included in this package).

You can book it in 3 ways:

Book directly with a tour operator online

You can find trustworthy tour operators’ contacts and book with them in advance.

Personally, I saw an advertisement for D’tour and messaged them on WhatsApp. They gave us the jetty’s address and itinerary of the tour. Once we arrived at the jetty, we showed them the booking and got the ticket (I will give more feedback about D’tour in the next part).

Book at the point

When I reached Kuala Selangor, I also saw a lot of signboards advertising those tours as well. Basically, you can just book directly with them. However, it’s not suggested during holidays or peak seasons.

Book online via Klook

Klook is a reliable online travel agent that offers good prices for customers. When comparing the price on Klook and the one provided by the tour operator, I saw that some tours are cheaper, some are a little more expensive, but the difference is not much.

Below are some trustworthy tour packages that you can consider:

  • Eagle Feeding, Fireflies, Blue Tears: link to book
  • Sky mirror: link to book
  • Kuala Selangor tour from Kuala Lumpur (Eagle Feeding, Fireflies, Blue Tears, Sky mirror, and Sekinchan): link to book

kuala-selangor-sky-mirror-package- D'tour

In general, I feel like most of the operators in Kuala Selangor offered the same service, same quality, and same price. As long as the company is reliable, you can go ahead and book with them.

Specifically, here is some of my feedback about D’tour company:

  • Price: The whole package (sky mirror, Eagle feeding, fireflies, blue tears, ATV) costs RM130/adult and RM100/child. This is an average price compared to other operators.
  • Timing: They provided us with a schedule, but the real departure time was 15-20 minutes for all activities. We always came earlier and had to wait at the jetty for quite a long time. It was boring because there was nothing else to do at the jetty as well. Waste of time.
  • Experience: The boat is old and a little bit dirty. But it’s fine because the tour is cheap. So I get what I pay for.
  • Inclusion: They provide a life jacket and light snacks after visiting the sky mirror.

Mosquitos spray

Be noticed that when you see fireflies, the boat will come closer to the bush and there are a lot of mosquitos there. So do prepare insect spray.

Sunscreen is essential when you visit the sky mirror. It’s quite hot and sunny there, especially at noontime.

If you don’t want to make your shoes dirty, then bring a flip-flop, especially when visiting the sky mirror.

Batu Caves – Murugan Statue: interesting fact, history, how to get there?

Kuala Lumpur travel guide. Is it expensive in Kuala Lumpur?

Though it’s just a small town, Kuala Selangor offers a lot of natural phenomena that will definitely amaze you.

In addition, traveling to Kuala Selangor is very cheap as well. We spent around RM300/person for 2 days 1 night including the tour package, food, hotel, etc.

Therefore, there is no reason to skip this fascinating hidden destination when you come to Malaysia.

Sky Mirror

During low tide, the Sky Mirror I sland reflects an image of the sky, which makes it one of the most impressive attractions of the country. The island remains submerged during high tide and shows its magic during low tide.

The island has been named so because of the mirror image of the sky that it creates. Not only the sky, but anyone or anything standing above it will also get a mirror image. Because of this magical mirror effect, hundreds to thousands of local tourists gather here to get a glimpse of the magical place and click some epic shots.

3. Bukit Melawati

Bukit-Melawati

The relics of the past, the Altingsburgh Lighthouse, a large rock slab named Batu Hampar, and the Poisoned Well are the highlights of the hillfort Bukit Melawati or Melawati Hill. The hillfort was the administrative centre of the Selangor Sultanate in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Bukit Melawati was constructed by the local Malays during the 16th century. The Dutch captured the fort during the early 18th century. Later on, in the late 18th century, Sultan Ibrahim recaptured the fort with the help of his two brothers, Penggawa Tua and Bendahara Adb. However, the fort was destroyed during the Klang War (also known as the Selangor Civil War).

For those who are interested in the history of Bukit Melawati, there are several remnants, a few leftover cannons and foundation stones at the location. The main highlights attract several curious tourists every year. Moreover, Kuala Selangor Historical Museum is a few steps away from Melawati Hill. The museum displays ancient weapons, collections of relics, artefacts, specimens of old currencies, dioramas, etc.

If you aren’t much interested in historical stuff, let me tell you that Melawati Hill is home to the local long-tailed macaques and silvered leaf monkeys. The silvered leaf monkeys at Melawati Hill are accustomed to human presence but feeding the monkeys is highly discouraged. It was made such to punish the traitors of the sultan. They were dropped into the well and the contaminated water would rise to the height of their chin and cause them great distress. Now, it has been covered with iron grates for health and safety. So, the curious visitors may have a close-range view of the well.

Mangrove-Boardwalk

There’s a beautiful boardwalk in Kuala Selangor Nature Park. However, it’s not in a good condition right now. It is actually made of concrete. But as it remains covered in dead leaves most of the time, it becomes quite slippery underfoot.

Also, the wooden railings are broken in places so you must be very careful if you are taking children along. However, a walk over the boardwalk among the green mangrove trees can be very fascinating.

16. Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple

Sri-Shakti-Devasthanam-Temple

Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple is a Hindu Temple that was constructed based on Hindu architectural scriptures. It is located around 9.5 km from Kuala Selangor town centre and is sited on an elevated land of around 1 acre. The temple is considered to be a shining beacon of Hindu architectural excellence.

During the late 19th or early 20th century, Indian immigrants who came to Malaysia built a small wooden shrine in Bukit Rotan. That’s how Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple came into being. Formerly, the temple was known as Sri Maha Mariamman Temple.

The temple was reconstructed in 2001 in adherence to the ancient Aghamas and Hindu scriptures. Before the reconstruction, all preliminary poojas were carried out. Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple is probably the first and the only temple in Malaysia that was constructed after holding all the preliminary rituals.

10 million bricks, 100 tonnes of granite, 20,000 tonnes of steel bars, 25 tonnes of teakwood, 1,500 cubic metres of concrete, and 1.2 million person-hours were needed to construct the temple. It is encircled by a massive decorative wall, and the magnificent entrance is a multi-tiered shrine soaring 74 feet high. The entrance was sculptured with granite frames weighing up to 4 tonnes. It was carved by skilled craftsmen of Mahabalipuram in Tamilnadu, India.

Annually, around 10 important Hindu festivals and auspicious dates are celebrated in the temple. Monthly, festivals like Sanggadahara Chathurthi, Pournami, Amavasai and Pratyangara Homa are observed in Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple . On a daily basis, poojas are conducted 5 times to ensure the blessings of Mother Shakti Mari Amman upon her devotees. Other than daily prayers, there are sets of different pooja packages for the devotees to sponsor and participate in.

Overall, Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple, with its beautiful architectural and sculptural designs, and unique features, is a shining example of the best Indian architecture in Malaysia.

23. Qi Jian Xian Shi Fo Zu Gu Miao

Xi-Ling-Gong

Qi Jian Xian Shi Fo Zu Gu Miao , dedicated to Lord Buddha, is a famous tourist attraction in Kuala Selangor with unique architecture. It is a two-level temple and its upper level is an artificial cave.

The ground floor of the temple consists of the main prayer hall. Both the floors are connected by a prayer of grand staircases. The upper level of the temple was designed to imitate a mountainous scene.

The main deity of Qi Jian Xian Shi Fo Zu Gu Miao is Di Zang Wang Pu Sa. He is one of the four principal bodhisattvas in East Asian Mahayana Buddhism. Bodhisattvas are people who made resolutions to become a Buddha and also received a confirmation or prediction from a living Buddha that they will become a Buddha.

If we translate the name of Di Zang Wang Pu Sa, it will mean Earth Treasury, Earth Store, Earth Matrix, or Earth Womb. He is popular for his vow to take responsibility for the instruction of all beings in the six worlds between the death of Gautama Buddha and the rise of Maitreya. He also took a vow not to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied.

That’s why he is often regarded as the bodhisattva of hell-beings, guardian of children and patron deity of deceased children and aborted fetuses in Japanese culture.

24. Redang Beach

Redang Beach

Redang Beach is a popular tourist attraction in Sekinchan near Kuala Selangor. It is also a famous shooting area of different local and international dramas. Some of the scenes for Outbound Love, a famous Hong Kong drama was shot here.

The beach is famous for its wishing tree, shorebirds, waterfowl, and numerous seafood vendors. The sad thing is that you can’t do swimming, diving, or snorkelling on this beach.

Sekinchan Wishing Tree, a huge tree with thousands of red ribbons dangling from its branches is a must-see attraction in Redang beach. Although I don’t believe in such stuff, but if you do, you can make a wish by tying a red ribbon with coins around the branch of the tree.

The local seafood restaurants in the area serve the best seafood. You can watch the sunset from the beach or play with soap bubbles and fly a kite. However, don’t mistake the Redang beach for Pulau Redang. Pulau Redang is a beautiful island off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Swimming, diving, or snorkelling are allowed in Pulau Redang and there are around thousands of differences between Redang beach and Pulau Redang. Honestly, Redang beach is not even near to Pulau Redang in terms of beauty. But it still is worth a visit, especially for budget travellers.

The Batu Caves Temple, also known as the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, is a monumental focal point of the contribution of the Indian settlers in the development of Malaya and Malaysia. The temple is around 113 years old inside a cave that is about 400 feet above ground level. The temple is dedicated to Lord Subramaniar.

There’s an interesting history behind the establishment of the temple. You can learn about it on your visit to the temple. The Batu Caves is said to be nature’s wonder. It is a 400 million-year-old limestone hill formed with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. It is also a shelter to some of the rarest species of flora and fauna.

Due to the presence of such wonder, the Malaysian government recognized the place as a religious and cultural centre for the Indians and Hindus residing in Malaysia. Major architectural plans are being made to facilitate the worship of all Hindu deities in the temple.

At the entrance of the steps of Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, a 130 feet tall statue of Lord Muruga is under construction. Once completed it will be the tallest Lord Muruga statue in the world.

They come to Sri Anggala Parameswary Peachiamman to worship Amma, the main deity of the temple. They believe that it is a very powerful temple, and all their wishes might come true after praying here.

According to the local people, Amma’s statue on the ground was formed by nature and it’s not man made. Back in those days, it was a very small temple. The local people who used to pray there about 40 years ago say that the temple used to be dark and scary. There were also no proper roads then.

But now as the temple has gained much public attention, many changes have been made to the temple. Even the road to the temple is now drive-worthy. 27. Kota Tanjung Keramat

Kota Tanjung Keramat

Kota Tanjung Keramat is a fort that was built by Sultan Muhammad in the year 1830. A major portion of the fort was built from soil despite that it was a very strong defence fort. It is square in shape with two entrances. The main entrance of the fort has a width of 7 metres and is facing the north direction.

The lane from the entrance is curved towards the east side leading to a staircase. The staircase goes down to Pangkalan Bagan Pasir. The other entrance is facing the east side and it was considered an emergency entrance for the army in the fort to get out to bring news from Kota Melawati. When the Dutch captured Kuala Selangor, this fort was renamed Fort Utrecht. They renamed it after their ship.

It’s a great place to learn more about the history of Kuala Selangor. That’s why lots of tourists come to this historical landmark.

28. Virgin’s Grave

Makam-Keramat-Anak-Dara

Virgin’s Grave , also known as Makam Keramat Anak Dara or Keramat Rubiah, is located at the small village named Kampong Tanjung Keramat. The village is small and situated at the last point of land at the mouth of the river Selangor.

The grave is on a small rocky hill. The sides of the hill have steepened by quarrying. You can climb up to the keramat by the rickety wooden steps. Virgin’s Grave is a white tiled rectangle protected inside a walled structure. There’s a signboard outside the grave to let visitors know the history behind it.

I don’t know why they call it a grave because it’s actually not a grave but a shrine. It is the shrine of an 18-year-old girl, Siti Aishah who ran away from her home to avoid a forced marriage. She was never found but her clothes were found hanging on a tree. So, her parents decided to build a shrine in her honour. It’s local folklore that is written on the signboard, and I think it’s quite interesting and counts as a reason to visit the place.

Behind the Virgin’s Grave, there is a beautiful lake. It was formed due to the excavations of the Japanese during the War. Probably that’s why it was named Lake Shima (Shima means island in Japanese) .

But trying out the seafood in Kuala Selangor is a must whether you go there for a day or a week. Varieties of seafood are available, halal restaurants are available too, so, what’s the harm in trying?

How to Reach Kuala Selangor from KL

A taxi trip from KL to Kuala Selangor might cost you around RM 80 to RM 150. You can negotiate if you book the taxi for the return trip as well.

By Car: If you face no problem driving for a long time, you can drive to Kuala Selangor. There are two routes from KL to Kuala Selangor. You can either drive towards the Sungai Buloh exit from the North-South highway and follow the road signs towards Kuala Selangor, or you can start your journey from Klang and drive towards Kapar and head straight from there towards Kuala Selangor.

How To Get Around Kuala Selangor

As Kuala Selangor is a relatively small town, there is no public transport system. So, you have to walk around the area to explore it or take a taxi. However, a tram goes up and down Bukit Melawati, so you won’t have to hike your way up there.

Best Time to Visit Kuala Selangor

We can’t specify a particular time to visit Kuala Selangor as all attractions aren’t in their best forms during the same season. However, if you want to know the best time to visit the place based on low crowds and costs, it is during the month of February.

In this small town, huge crowds are seen in June, July and August, so the hotels and flights become expensive. During Winter, it is comfortable to plan a trip to Kuala Selangor. So, overall, December-January will be the best time to visit Kuala Selangor due to the low crowd, inexpensiveness, and comfortable weather.

What To See And Do In Kuala Selangor

What To See In Kuala Selangor - Travelswithsun

If you’re not into history, nature, or seeing temples, there’s not much else you can see or do in Kuala Selangor.

That said, here are the attractions that we think you should take note of if you want to make a day trip out of exploring this area. Many of these are on Bukit Melawati.

Bukit Melawati

Bukit Melawati or Melawati Hill is a hill near Kuala Selangor that attracts visitors daily, especially on the weekends! There are no entrance fees , and anyone can come and enjoy the scenery and fresh air here!

You can walk, drive or take the weekend tram up from the base to the top of the hill. For adults, the slow tram ride is not exciting, but kids will be thrilled! Buy tickets at the base of the hill in front of the car park.

View From Atop Bukit Melawati

If you choose to drive up, you can only do so outside of tram operating hours. That means weekdays or early morning or late evening for weekends.

Honestly, if you are able-bodied, it’s not a difficult climb up to Bukit Melawati. The path goes up the road. It took us less than  10 minutes before we saw the bleached-white lighthouse on top of the hill.

This is the Altingsburg Lighthouse which is a 27m tall historic landmark that dates back to 1907. Today, it is still lit up from 7pm to 6am and the light can be seen 18 nautical miles away. Visitors cannot go up the lighthouse without special permission. But the tram ride from the base of the hill makes a stop here.

Altingsburg Lighthouse On Bukit Melawati

Another highlight here are the remaining walls and cannons of Melawati Fort (Kota Melawati) . From the top of the hill, you can see the Straits of Malacca too.

Monkey Sitting On A Cannon At Melawati Fort

Bukit Melawati is a great opportunity to see silver leaf monkeys up close (and for free!). The babies are especially adorable with their persimmon-colored fur! Adults have dark grey fur in contrast.

Silver Leaf Monkeys At Bukit Melawati

Despite there being many vendors selling food for the monkeys, do not feed them as it makes them too dependent on humans!

Note: The practice also attracts the more aggressive monkeys!

By the way, as you make your way  down  (on foot) from Bukit Melawati, you will see the Royal Mausoleum. It’s fenced up to prevent public access, but the building is nice to admire!

Historical Museum Of Kuala Selangor

Admission to this museum is  free  and it is here that you can learn about the  development of the town.  And how Kuala Selangor served as a  trading centre  for the  tin mining  industry.

Did you know that Kuala Selangor was the very  first  capital of the State of Selangor?

It will likely you take you  less than an hour  to browse through the  dioramas, old weapons and other artifacts .

  • Opening hours:  9:30am to 5:30pm

Historic landmarks nearby:

  • Tanjong Keramat Fort – In the nearby village called  Kampong Tanjung Keramat , Tanjong Keramat Fort or Bukit Belanda (“Dutchill”) was a 2-storey granite and clay building built by Sultan Ibrahim, the 2nd Sultan of Selangor. It was taken over by the Dutch in 1784. Today, the walls of the fort and the cannons are gone but you can see the remains of the foundations.
  • Virgin’s Grave (or Makam Keramat Anak Dara) – Also in Kampong Tanjung Keramat, this is a small shrine on a hill that has a sad story tied to it. You can read about it from the signboard outside the shrine.
  • War Memorial – Built by the British to commemorate their fallen comrades as well as Malaysian soldiers who lost their lives in  World War I and II , this war memorial is at the roundabout for Jalan Keramat Tanjong in Kuala Selangor. But instead of the original bronze plaques (which were probably stolen), there are now wooden ones that carry the names of the fallen soldiers.
  • Poisoned Well – In its days of use, the poisoned well supposedly contained  liquid rubber  and  scratchy bamboo shoots Traitors were possibly tortured (through severe itching) and drowned here too. Note: Please don’t throw your litter down here!

Kuala Selangor Nature Park (Taman Alam)

The  324 hectares  sanctuary is managed by the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).

Because the park consists mostly of  mangroves, mud flats and secondary jungle , you can expect to see many species of birds here ( ~156  species with  57  migratory types)!

Some common animals you will probably see are  fiddler crabs and monkeys ! You might even spot  otters  here!

  • Opening hours:   9am to 6pm
  • Entrance fee:  RM4 (adult), RM1 (student and children below 16)

Note: Malaysian Nature Society members pay RM2.

Boat Tours For Fireflies

As the evening approaches, tours gear up to take people out to see  fireflies as there are thousands (now hundreds) of them lighting up the mangroves along the banks of Selangor River!

Book your ticket now via Klook: Fireflies Night TourFireflies Night Tour + Seafood Dinner

Eagle Feeding Tours

Something else that’s popular around here is sea eagle feeding! It involves getting on a boat with other tourists. And the tour company will take you guys  along the river .

The beautiful birds will gather soon enough as the tour guides throw out pieces of raw chicken meat for them to catch mid-air!

Many tour operators combine this activity with firefly tours or a visit to the Sky Mirror (more on this later).

However, we strongly advise our readers not to go for these tours as this encourages unnatural behaviour among the eagles (e.g., they don’t eat their usual prey causing an imbalance in the local ecosystem). Besides, raw chicken is just unsanitary!

There are  two beaches  that you can visit in Kuala Selangor, and each are great spots for viewing the sunset! The beaches are an  hours’ drive apart .

Weekend Crowd At Pantai Redang In Sekinchan

Pantai Redang is up north while Pantai Remis is south, not far from  Jeram .

  • Remis Beach (Pantai Remis) – This small beach often has crowds of people on  weekends and public holidays  even though it is  not suitable  for swimming! Popular activities include trying the  fresh seafood  sold at the beach,  flying kites, fishing  and watching the  sunset , of course!
  • Redang Beach (Pantai Redang) – Redang beach may share the same name as Redang Island in Terengganu but unlike its namesake, this beach is  not ideal for snorkelling, diving or even swimming ! However, this is a local hot spot during the evenings as there’s plenty of space to fly kites. And occasionally, you might see some  migratory birds  flying by! A  small Chinese temple  and a  wishing tree  are also close by and worth a quick look!

Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Food To Try

While Kuala Selangor isn’t famous for its food, it does have a few establishments that have made their own mark on the town.

  • Auntie Foo Café -This quaint air-conditioned cafe is a popular for breakfast and is in a heritage building in the middle of town. Must-try items include their homemade ice-cream! Western dishes are available on the menu too besides local favorites like nasi lemak. Another must-try at this cafe is the cendol. They also sell dried local seafood and other souvenirs.
  • Kedai Kopi Shin Lok 新乐茶室 – If you were thinking of checking out Remis Beach (Pantai Remis), then it’s worth coming here for the steamed buns of various fillings are sold here. Vegetable buns sell out pretty quick! And if you’ve never tried  kaya before, here’s your chance! They also have other snacks here like taro dumplings and curry puffs. Meanwhile, the coffee is great too!

Seafood Restaurants

Kuala Selangor is known for affordable seafood. Here two prominent restaurants if you want to have a seafood meal while you are here!

  • Restoran Tian Wai Tian ( 天外天海鲜餐室) – This Chinese restaurant (non halal) might look a bit old from the outside, but it serves up some  delicious food  in an air-conditioned environment too. Recommended dishes include fried oysters, crab with rice noodles and curry fish head.
  • River View Seafood Restaurant – Popular for the food as well as its view over the river, this Chinese restaurant is also  halal ! If you’ve come here before, they no longer offer alcohol. Dishes to try include spicy crab, claypot crab rice, salted egg crab and steamed fish!

Sekinchan is a popular rural town to visit if you’re in Kuala Selangor. Plan your trip accordingly and you’ll be able to see beautiful green rice fields here!

Green Rice Fields At Sekinchan

There’s also a chance to visit a rice processing factory for a tour! And there are many seafood restaurants here as this town also has a small fishing village. See what else you can do in Sekinchan .

Bagan Fishing Village Of Sekinchan

We recommend coming to this town in the morning before it gets very hot. And if you can, rent a bicycle to get around as finding parking at tourist hot spots can be a real headache on weekends.

Often called the  Salar de Uyuni of Malaysia  for its resemblance to Bolivia’s Uyuni salt flats, the  Sasaran Sky Mirror  of Kuala Selangor is a sight you do not want to miss!

Umbrellas make good props too at the sky mirror, Kuala Selangor

But because the sandbar only appears during  low tide , there are  limited tour slots . In fact, these tours only run a  few times a month , depending on the tide. So, make sure you  book early !

Temples are aplenty around Kuala Selangor – take your pick and try to squeeze at least one into your trip!

  • Qi Jian Xian Shi Fo Zu Gu Miao –This is a small and colorful Taoist-Buddhist temple but you can get a good view of the sea from the top!
  • Monkey God Temple (Xi Ling Gong) – You can also get a good view of the surrounding area from atop this colorful temple. Take some time to admire the images in the temple – some feature the many levels of hell!
  • Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple – This stunning temple is one of the finest Hindu temples in Malaysia with its intricately carved sandstone walls! Besides this, all manifestations of 51 Shakti Peedam (collected from 51 holy sites across South Asia) are here! If you drop by at night, the temple is lit up too!

You don’t really have an excuse not to visit Kuala Selangor if you stay in the Klang valley and you have your own car and a free weekend!

Even one day would suffice to see the best that this rural area has to offer. It’s only an hour’s drive away north Kuala Lumpur. For us, it was 2.5 hours’ drive south from Ipoh!

Leave the day-to-day behind with this excursion to Kuala Selangor, a coastal city in Malaysia, famous for its stunning landscapes and fireflies. It's sure to be an unforgettable evening!

Fireflies in the Kampung Kuantan night

Having picked you up from your hotel in Kuala Lumpur, we'll make our way to Kuala Selangor , a delightful coastal spot just an hour from the Malaysian capital.

Our first stop will be the Bukit Melawati hill , home to the remains of an old 18th-century fort which still has its original cannons, and from where we'll contemplate the Western coast of the Malay peninsula.

Hungry yet? Before our next stop, we'll enjoy a wonderful typical dinner in a local restaurant .

The excursion then continues towards one of the most famous areas of Kuala Selangor:  Kampung Kuantan.  The reason for its striking popularity are the populations of fireflies that inhabit the area, making it one of the largest and most famous colonies of these insects in the world.

We'll take a boat trip around the Selangor River , as these fireflies illuminate the banks of the river – a fascinating natural spectacle!

After our cruise, we'll make our way back to Kuala Lumpur and return 8 hours after our departure.

This tour includes pickup from hotels located half a kilometer from the centre of Kuala Lumpur. If your accommodation is located in a more distant area, you'll have to go on your own to the indicated meeting point.

Travelogue: One Day in Sekinchan and Kuala Selangor, Malaysia

Please share this article if you think it's awesome!

Welcome to my  travelogue  series, in which I share my travel diary the old-fashioned way, recounting where I went, what I did, what I ate, how much I paid, what I felt, etc, in a sequential order.

In May 2022, my hubby and I travelled to Malaysia to visit our family for the first time after the pandemic. We wanted to travel together to a place where neither of us has visited before.

We decided to go to Sekinchan, a town that’s quite unique because of its abundance of paddy fields. At the same time, Sekinchan is also close to Kuala Selangor which is well-known for fireflies watching, and most of us had never watched fireflies before.

So, Sekinchan and Kuala Selangor it is!

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Sekinchan Beach

Preparing for the trip

1. Check the calendar . The first thing you must absolutely do before planning a trip to Sekinchan is to check the paddy planting calendar. That is because, if you go in the wrong month, you’ll see barren lands instead of green fields.

I’ll share the full calendar in the “Paddy Field” section further in this article. In short, if you want to see green fields, do visit between mid March to mid May, and mid September to mid November.

2. Research for things to do . There are plenty of things to do and places to visit in Sekinchan, you won’t be able to see everything on a day trip. Therefore, you need to shortlist the things that you want to do and see.

For me, I relied on these insightful articles from Travels with Sun and Ummi Goes Where to shortlist what I want to do and see. Also, don’t forget to research for what to eat.

3. Make a draft itinerary. An itinerary helps to plan our time effectively. We made a rough itinerary in our heads and adjusted it when we were on the road.

4. Book the activities in advance . We prefer to book activities in advance whenever possible so that we don’t have to be in limbo in case the activity is fully booked when we arrive. For this day trip, we made online booking for fireflies watching tour .

5. Figure out your transportation mode. Public transportation is probably non-existent in Sekinchan, so it’s best to drive. If you don’t have a car in Malaysia, you can rent a car here .

Getting to Sekinchan

As I’ve mentioned in the previous section, the best way to get to Sekinchan is to drive. If you don’t have driving license, you can take bus from Kuala Lumpur to Sekinchan . Once in Sekinchan, you can rent a bike or a taxi to get around the town.

For us, we drove our family car from south of Kuala Lumpur to Sekinchan.

When we arrived at Sekinchan, it was already noon, and that can only mean one thing: It’s lunch time! We read great reviews of Restoran Weng Kee on Google maps and blogs, so we decided to give it a try.

It is a humble family restaurant which wasn’t too crowded when we visited. Price-wise, it’s quite affordable. We ordered four dishes (salted egg calamari, stir fried shark meat, chili prawn, 3 treasures). The total bill was RM 79.

I really liked the salted egg calamari. However, I didn’t quite enjoy the other 3 dishes. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things, but some of the things we ordered were their recommendations. Perhaps they just didn’t suit my tastebuds.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Lunch at Weng Kee

Paddy Field

After lunch, it was time to visit the highlight of our day trip, which was the Paddy Field! Before arriving at Sekinchan, I thought that there is a designated spot for tourists to enter the Paddy Field. It turned out that there isn’t.

Basically, the paddy fields on scattered all around Sekinchan. Since most of the attractions are situated along Jalan Tali Air 5, you can head to Jalan Tali Air 5 and you’ll find hectares upon hectares of paddy field lining up on both side of the road.

For us, we visited the paddy field near Ah Ma House because there were parking spots opposite of Ah Ma House. Here’s how the paddy field opposite Ah Ma House looks like. (Here’s the location of this paddy field on map )

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Paddy Field

Because we visited in the third week of May, the paddy was ripening and almost ready for harvesting. You can see the paddies below are quite full with rice!

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Paddy Field

It was my first time holding a paddy and I was really excited.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Paddy Field

If you are planning a trip to Sekinchan, I highly recommend that you visit between mid March to mid May, and mid Sept to mid Nov. Here’s the calendar for your easy reference.

Ah Ma House

Ah Ma House is a retail shop that sells old-school snacks. Its interior is full of vintage objects, we felt like we went back to the time when our parents were still kids in the 70s.

As an 80s kid, I could still recognize some of the old-school snacks. It was truly a walk down the memory lane. Personally, I really liked the herbal jelly pudding. Interestingly, they accept electronic payment, such as GrabPay and Touch ‘N Go.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Ah Ma House

Corn Seller

When exiting Ah Ma House, we were approached by a lady on motorcycle selling corns. At RM10 for 8 corns, we felt that it was really cheap. Even cheaper than supermarkets in KL. If you happen to meet freelance corn sellers, consider yourself lucky!

day trip kuala selangor

Paddy Gallery

Located along the same road as Ah Ma House is the Paddy Gallery , a factory / gallery / museum about paddy. Admission fee is RM5 and visitors will get a pack of souvenir rice.

I think it is a must visit place in Sekinchan. I wrote a detailed article about Sekinchan Paddy Gallery so I won’t be writing about it too much here.

Here are some of my favorite photos of Paddy Gallery.

Paddy Gallery Sekinchan

Mango King is located near Paddy Gallery. At this food court, you can buy various food, drinks and snacks, but the most famous one is definitely the mango drink stall. They accept electronic payments, such as GrabPay and Touch ‘N Go.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Mango King

Sekinchan Beach

The next place we visited was Pantai Redang Sekinchan . Don’t confuse this with Redang Island, the famous diving spot in Trengganu, which is very far away from Sekinchan (about 500km away).

Sekinchan Beach is quite a small beach. Because it’s facing the west direction, it’s a great place to watch the sunset.

Across the canal from the beach is the Sekinchan Fishing Port. And if you walk further into the land-side, you’ll see a huge Wishing Tree decorated in red prayer ribbons, and a temple beside the tree.

Admission is free. There are a few food stalls (not restaurants) at the beach. And there’s this “I Love Sekinchan” signboard which makes a great photo op for tourists like us.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Sekinchan Beach

Sekinchan Wishing Tree

The Sekinchan Wishing Tree is within walking distance from Pantai Redang. It can be easily spotted from the carpark at the beach, thanks to its humongous size and the striking red color of the ribbons.

If you want to make a wish using the red ribbon, you can purchase it from the temple beside the tree and write your wish on the ribbon. Then, throw the ribbon up to the tree branch; the rings at both ends of the ribbon help to secure the ribbon to the tree branch. It’s not easy, it takes some practice to get your ribbon hooked to the branch.

If you walk around the tree, you will find a small recess on the tree trunk with a praying altar.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Fireflies Watching Tour

From Sekinchan Beach, we drove about half an hour south to the town of Kuala Selangor for the fireflies watching tour. Our tour bundle included eagle feeding and blue tears watching. The entire tour lasts for 3.5 hours and it cost about RM20/person.

We felt very satisfied with the tour because we managed to see all the 3 things (eagles, fireflies, blue tears) successfully. Furthermore, I feel that the price is really affordable and I highly recommend this tour if you want to see fireflies in Malaysia.

I’ve had too many things to say about this tour, and too many photos and videos to show. So, I’ve dedicated a separate detailed article about this tour. You can read my experience watching eagle feeding, fireflies, and blue tears here .

Kuala Selangor Firefly Tour

We finished the fireflies tour at over 9pm and we were really starving by then. We asked the crew at fireflies watching tour for dinner recommendation, and she recommended this Want to Eat Restaurant , which is just a 3-min drive from the jetty. Thankfully, the restaurant was still open!

We ordered nyonya steamed fish (900gr, RM60), claypot clams (RM22), oyster omelette (RM20), vegetables, rice and drinks. I usually don’t like clams and oyster, but surprisingly I love both the claypot clams and oyster omelette! You know a restaurant is good when it turns you from a non-eater to an eater!

Our total bill was RM144. It was double the price of our lunch but to be honest, it’s so worth the price! Highly recommend this restaurant.

Day Trip to Sekinchan Kuala Selangor Malaysia - Dinner Want to Eat Restaurant

Sekinchan is a perfect day trip destination from Kuala Lumpur and Perak. This unique little town has lush green paddy fields, paddy factory/gallery, beach, fishing port, vintage shops, vintage bus cafe, and cheap food.

Sekinchan is also near Kuala Selangor, the home of fireflies. You can combine a visit to Sekinchan and Kuala Selangor in a day, like what we did.

The downside of a day trip is that you won’t be able to see everything. We didn’t have opportunity to visit the iconic bus cafe and Nan Tian Temple. To really see the town, I think it’s best to spend at least 2D1N.

Will I come back? Yes if I happen to be traveling around Selangor.

If you like my work, you can buy me a coffee! Your support will help me to keep going!

What to Do In Sekinchan: 12 Best Things to Do in Sekinchan, Malaysia

1. check out amazing sekinchan paddy fields.

Sekinchan-Day-Trip-Rice-Paddies

Though Sekinchan is a fishing village, it is a lot more famous for its beautiful stretches of rice paddies . These rice paddies dominate the landscapes of Sekinchan, and it is probably the best thing to do in Sekinchan.

Visiting the Sekinchan rice paddy fields is a must if you come from a stressful city such as Kuala Lumpur as they remind you of the simpler days. Watch the rice plants flow freely in the wind, listen to the sounds of the birds, and feel your worries dissipate from your body.

Similar to the rice paddies in  Bali  or Vietnam, they are very picturesque. Blue skies, tall rice plants, and a beautiful flower dress, you have yourself the perfect Instagram photo! Sekinchan is unquestionably one of the most beautiful places in Malaysia!

2. Visit Kuala Selangor For Fireflies and Sky Mirror

If you have more than one day in Sekinchan, consider visiting the neighboring town Kuala Selangor . Kuala Selangor is a small seaside town similar to Sekinchan, but it has two of the top attractions in Malaysia: Fireflies and  Sky Mirror .

Experiencing the fireflies is one of the best things to do in Sekinchan at night, especially since the town doesn’t really have a nightlife.

However, because seeing the fireflies is a night activity, it might be difficult to participate if you are on a day trip to Sekinchan. If you can afford to spend more than 1 day in Sekinchan, seeing the fireflies is a must.

Numerous colonies of fireflies roam freely in the mangroves of Kuala Selangor. With the pitch darkness, the flickering of their lights is like stars in the sky!

Any travelers looking for a unique dining establishment must not miss  N16 Cafe  in Sekinchan. Also known as the Sekinchan Bus Cafe, the entire establishment is situated in an old school bus that has been renovated it to become a cafe.

The food is decent but the most promising feature is the spectacular view of the paddy fields nearby. Sip on a cup of home-brewed coffee, have a slice of delicious cake, and enjoy the stunning visuals inside and outside the bus cafe!

The cafe is built on top of a freight container that acts as the kitchen. There is free parking nearby and the famous accommodation Padi Box is right next door. If you are staying in Padi Box (which is what we did), you surely cannot miss the N16 Cafe.

N16 Cafe has air conditioning, making it the perfect place to relax after a visit to the other Sekinchan attractions nearby, especially in the summer.

4. Make a Wish At The Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Wishing-Tree-Sekinchan

Located on Pantai Redang (Beach Redang), the  Sekinchan Wishing Tree  is one of the best places to visit in Sekinchan.

As you approach the wishing tree, you will see the numerous red ribbons hanging off the tree. These ribbons are written with wishes from other visitors.

To get your own ribbon, you must make a donation at the adjacent temple. Each red ribbon is tied to an ancient Chinese coin . When tossing your ribbon on the tree, try to get it as high as possible. Legend says that the higher the ribbon lands, the most likely your wish is going to come true!

Don’t forget to keep your wish a secret!

5. Chill At Pantai Redang Beach, The Iconic Sekinchan Beach

Pantai-Redang-Beach-Sekinchan-trip

If you are already at the Sekinchan Wishing Tree, then Pantai Redang (or Redang Beach) is literally right at your doorstep. Though the quality of this Sekinchan beach cannot compare to those of Langkawi, Pantai Redang still attracts plenty of people on the weekends and holidays.

If you are traveling with family in Malaysia, Pantai Redang is the perfect place to bring your kids. They can spend hours running up and down the soft sands, observing kite flyers, and swimming in the cold soothing water .

It is impossible to not love the beach in the hot and humid weather of Malaysia!

If you have time, grab a coconut, have some seafood nearby, and wait for the breathtaking sunset to unfold in front of your eyes!

6. Wander Around The Sekinchan Fishing Village

day trip kuala selangor

Though Sekinchan is famous for its rice paddies, the village itself is meant to be a fishing village .

When you are not taking photos at the rice paddies, stroll around the old streets of Sekinchan. You will encounter numerous seafood restaurants and vendors selling various types of dried seafood.

Not only do you get to see the final products, but you can also see the different types of equipment and ship that fishermen use. If you are from a big city, then the contrast of a small fishing village will be quite interesting.

7. Stuff Yourself With Some Fresh Sekinchan Seafood

day trip kuala selangor

One of the many pros of a fishing village is the accessibility to fresh and delicious seafood . Sekinchan is no exception.

The fishing village is populated with many high-quality seafood restaurants at affordable prices. If you are from the western parts of the world, chances are you have never encountered some of those kinds of seafood.

Dishes such as oyster omelet, mantis shrimp, and shark meat are all popular local cuisine. If you are feeling adventurous, make sure you give those a try!

There are many amazing seafood restaurants in Sekinchan to try some delicious local dishes, here are the ones we recommend:

  • Loong Hua Restaurant – Arguably the most famous restaurant in Sekinchan
  • Weng Kee Seafood Restaurant – Highly rated and affordable
  • Seafood D’bendang – A fancier restaurant, but the food is very good.

8. Learn About Rice Harvesting At The Paddy Gallery

Paddy-Gallery Sekinchan

Besides admiring the lush paddies, one of the best activities in Sekinchan is to learn about the entire rice-making process from start to finish.

The  Paddy Gallery  is an active rice-processing facility as well as a museum featuring exhibits on harvesting and more. Visitors will learn each and every step of the process from the rice paddies to the rice grains we see in the supermarkets.

On the ground floor of the establishment are shops where visitors can purchase souvenirs, snacks, and even rice produced there! On the first floor is the informational museum, where the entrance fee is 5 RM.

It is worth the low price for so much information. Rice might be simple on the surface, but the procedure to get it down to the grains is scientific and interesting!

They have recently added a rice market to the establishment, so visitors can purchase any rice-related souvenirs and products there.

The Paddy Gallery is located in the middle of the paddy fields, offering unparalleled views of the lush surroundings. However, it is quite a trek to arrive. I recommend either renting a bicycle or driving there!

Don’t miss it, it is arguably the most famous Sekinchan tourist spot!

9. Indulge In Fresh Mango Smoothies At Mango King

Mango-King-Sekinchan

Located on the outskirts of town is one of the best things to do in Sekinchan, especially if you have a sweet tooth.  Mango King  is a small stall located in the midst of the paddy fields, just down the road from the Paddy Gallery.

Here you will find the freshest and sweetest mangoes and mango smoothies in Sekinchan . If there is anything I learned from backpacking Malaysia, it is that nothing beats a refreshing mango smoothie or slushie in the hot Malaysian sun.

After trying their mango specialties, you may want to purchase those seriously addicting mangoes! Thank God they are so affordable!

Mango King also sells snacks and other kinds of beverages, but we found them to be not as tasty.

💪 Pro Tip: If you come early in the day, you can try one of the mango smoothies with passion fruit. They are one of the best-sellers and are often sold out!

10. Go Back In Time At Ah Ma House (Grandma’s House)

Ah-Ma-House-Sekinchan-place to visit

Ah Ma House  is a unique attraction in Sekinchan showing the rich history of the region.

Featuring a conglomerate of old things such as film cameras, the Game Boy, the refrigerator-sized TVs , and other items that are before my time, stepping into Ah Ma House is like stepping into a time machine .

If I had taken my parents there, they would’ve enjoyed the trip down memory lane tremendously. For me, I was only able to recognize a few of the items. Even then, a sense of nostalgia rushed over me as I stood in awe in the traditional Chinese house.

Besides the antique items and cool historic house , Ah Ma House is known for its homemade cookies and crackers . Those snacks brought back some childhood memories for me. Don’t hesitate to try them when you get the chance!

Across from Ah Ma House is another attraction called the Kampung Atuk (or Grandpa’s House). Though it was closed when we visited, it had empty stands with displays selling traditional snacks. It must be a popular spot in Sekinchan on the weekends or holidays!

11. Rent a Bicycle And Ride Around Town

Sekinchan-Bicycle-Rental

Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to explore Sekinchan and the paddy fields around it. If you are in Sekinchan without any type of transportation (car or motorcycle), a bicycle will allow you to visit some of the places outside of town.

Luckily for you, there are a few bicycle rental shops in Sekinchan . The most reliable of which is the  AMG Bicycle Renting Sekinchan .

Featuring anything from a single-person bike to a family bike (4 persons), AMG Bicycle Renting Sekinchan has a bicycle for any type of traveler. If you are too lazy to paddle, they also have electronic bikes for a higher price!

Be careful if you plan on riding a bicycle in Sekinchan. There is no such thing as a bike lane in Sekinchan!

12. Enjoy MSekin Wonderland Waterpark

MSekin-Wonderland-Waterpark-sekinchan

If you are visiting Sekinchan with kids, then you’ll want to visit, MSekin Wonderland, the first children’s water park in the town.

The park has approximately 10 pools for a variety of water activities, making it perfect for a family. Whether you are looking for an adrenaline-filled or relaxing time in MSekin Wonderland, you’ll find it!

The waterpark is conveniently situated next to Sekinchan’s beach, so you can combine a sunset watching at the beach with it!

Things To Do In Sekinchan Map

Where To Eat In Sekinchan?

Oyster-Pancake

If you are visiting Sekinchan, your tummy is going to thank you. Because of its location near the sea and paddy fields, visitors have access to some of the freshest ingredients you can possibly get.

Plus a mix of influence from the Chinese and Malays, you have yourself some of the best foods you can find in Malaysia. Here are some of the restaurants we recommend in Sekinchan:

  • N16 Bus Cafe – As mentioned above, this cafe offers beautiful views of the rice paddies in Sekinchan
  • Loong Hua Restaurant – One of the seafood restaurants in Sekinchan that serves delicious seafood at affordable prices. It is highly recommended by locals!
  • Eighty Eight Kopitiam – A great and cheap place for breakfast and lunch, Eighty Eight Kopitiam serves a wide variety of porridge and noodles.
  • Seafood D’bendang – This restaurant is situated on the outskirts of the town, but their seafood is some of the best you can find. However, expect to pay quite a hefty price! The ambiance is also very modern and clean!

Where To Stay In Sekinchan, Malaysia

Best Unique Hotel In Sekinchan –  Padi Box

Padi-Box-Sekinchan-container hotel

If there is another thing Sekinchan is famous for, it’s the freight container hotel and homestays. If you are used to staying in 5-star hotels and think this is outrageous, let me convince you otherwise.

The most famous container hotel in Sekinchan is  Padi Box . Using recycled freight containers as building structures, this eco-friendly accommodation is not only stylish but strangely comfortable.

The decor of the hotel is adorable, and there are plenty of open areas to get some sun and admire at the rice paddies. It has the amenities of a standard hotel but in a generally fun and relaxing atmosphere.

If you are traveling to Sekinchan as a pair or couple, make sure you check out the Padi Box standard 2-person room or the 2-person room with a private balcony, perfect for Instagram photos!

Best Container Hotel in Sekinchan – Villa Chee

Sekincan Container Hotel

Padi Box isn’t the only container hotel in Sekinchan. Meet Villa Chee.

Though we did not get a chance to stay at Villa Chee (wink wink if you are reading this Villa Chee), we CANNOT not include this in our Sekinchan guide.

Similar to Padi Box, Villa Chee is located in the middle of the gorgeous paddy fields, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the elements. What separates this from Padi Box is that Villa Chee has a swimming pool, an outdoor restaurant, and relaxing outdoor spaces where guests can just chill out.

It has a wooden walkway that juts out into the paddy fields, perfect for photos or just getting a closer look at the rice fields without having to step in the soil, which is often wet.

This property is situated on the outskirts of Sekinchan, which means you’ll need to have a car. But worry not, there is plenty of parking on site.

Best Cheap Hotel In Sekinchan –  OYO 880 Hotel Purple Town

Sekinchan Hotels OYO

OYO 880 Hotel Purple Town is one of the most popular hotels in Sekinchan, thanks to its excellent value for money.

OYO is a chain of hotels that is very common in Malaysia. Known for their standard rooms at an affordable price, OYO 880 Hotel Purple Town is the perfect place to stay if you are traveling on a budget or want to save some money!

Best Vacation Rental / Airbnb In Sekinchan –  One Residence Sekinchan

Where to Stay in Sekinchan 2

Explore Sekinchan like a local by staying at one of the best vacation rentals or Airbnbs in Sekinchan. It is a great way to give back to the local communities and find a cozy accommodation. One Residence in Sekinchan is exactly that.

As a 3-bedroom apartment in Sekinchan, this vacation rental can accommodate up to 8 guests comfortably. Guests traveling in groups or with families will love the spacious home. With 2 baths, there is no need to worry about waiting to shower or use the toilet in this rental apartment.

Located in the heart of Sekinchan, guests can find the morning market (Pasar), bicycle rentals, various restaurants, and the famous paddy fields nearby. The apartment is located in a residential complex, so guests can also use the shared facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool and a children’s playground.

A private parking space is also offered for all guests. Discovering Sekinchan is made easy by staying at One Residence Sekinchan!

Is A Sekinchan Day Trip Enough?

Sekinchan-things-to-do

One of the most common questions I get asked about Sekinchan is “ Is a Sekinchan one day trip enough? ” The answer is: Probably yes.

Sekinchan is beautiful but it is a small fishing village after all. One day in Sekinchan is plenty to see the main Sekinchan attractions .

If you are visiting Sekinchan, chances are you will have your own car or motorcycle . Having your own transportation allows you to easily jump from one Sekinchan attraction to another. Taxi-hailing apps such as Grab can be unreliable in a small town like Sekinchan.

A popular option for traveling in town is by bicycle. There are bicycle rental companies in town with various types of bikes for rent!

Though if you want to enjoy some of the nearby attractions in Kuala Selangor such as the fireflies and  Sky Mirror , you might want to consider staying in Sekinchan for 2 days. A weekend in Sekinchan is the ideal amount of time to explore and relax in this beautiful seaside town with stunning rice paddies!

If you are going from KL to Sekinchan, check out our special Sekinchan day tour with Sky Mirror!

How To Get To Sekinchan?

Sekinchan-Featured

Sekinchan is a small fishing village located in the Sabak Bernam District of Selangor , about 100 kilometers away from  Kuala Lumpur . The most convenient option to visit Sekinchan is by renting a car in Kuala Lumpur and taking the 1.5-hour drive .

Though there is public transportation that goes from Kuala Lumpur to Sekinchan, the route requires many stops and a longer time (~2 to 2.5 hours). If you want to do a Sekinchan day trip, it is highly recommended to drive from Kuala Lumpur.

If you insist on taking a bus from KL to Sekinchan, head over to  Pudu Sentral  (Puduraya) and catch the SPT to Teluk Intan . The bus will pass by Sekinchan where you can disembark.

Well done for a quite in depths description n informative blog. Just wondering if the Padibox is comfy for a group of 7, or better to get a high rise condo stay. And how to know whether the Paddy field hv been harvested or still green?

The biggest room they have in Padi Box is for 6 people, so a group of 7 would need to split 2 rooms. We recommend to check beforehand (send a message or call the hotel/homestay) and ask about the conditions of the paddy fields.

sekinchan food and hotel too pricey …. we found very nice place …. go Muar, Johor… much better ….. nice and peaceful …. nice people

Hi Sean, I’d like to ask by which transportation you went to Sekinchan? I wonder if the bus route which you mention in your blog can disembark nearby Padi box? Since there’s barely any Grab to take around the village.

We took the SPT from Pudu Sentral but got off at Kuala Selangor to stay a night. If we stayed on the SPT, that would’ve taken us to Sekinchan. We aren’t sure if you can make a stop at Padi Box, but we have seen people get on and off throughout the journey (not at bus stops). So if we have to say, yes, you should be able to get the driver to drop you off near Padi Box.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip: What to Do in Tanjung Sepat

January 2, 2016 by summerkid_summergirl

Tanjung Sepat is a small town located in Kuala Langat district of Selangor, about 100KM from Kuala Lumpur City Centre. If you happened to be in AVANI Sepang Gold Coast and Gold Coast Morib, the two most famous resorts along Sepang Coastline for short getaway, do take a half day trip to Tanjung Sepat for some nice food, and traditional coffee. Because the town sort of, located in between these two hotels.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

Tanjung Sepat gets its name from the word Tanjung, meaning cape in English, and Sepat, a type of fish. It used to be a fishing village but due to pollution in Straits of Malacca, this activity is becoming less intensive, but still part of the daily scene here. A half day to one day trip here during weekend or long holidays is ideal, as this place allows you to slow down your hectic pace in the city, stroll along the seaside and enjoy the gentle breeze.

How far is Tanjung Sepat from KL? About one and a half hour drive from KL City Centre. It is easy for locals to reach there by driving, but for tourists, suggest to rent a van or cab to go around tourist spots in the area.

How’s the weather in Tanjung Sepat? Depends on your luck. Either hot and humid weather with clear blue sky or rainy, gloomy sky which happened to us.

What to eat in Tanjung Sepat? Duck soup seafood noodles (we miss this), Seafood Bak Kut Teh, Minced Meat Pau, Mui Choy Pau, Traditional Kopi, and again, seafood feast in restaurant during lunch or dinner.

What to do in Tanjung Sepat? Frankly speaking, there’s nothing much to do in Tanjung Sepat. It is not as crowded as Sekinchan , even on holidays. The main reason that drives us over is the beautiful scenery of trees on beach during low tide. Other activities that sum up the whole journey. Tanjung Sepat community has opened a website, which has brief information about the town, and a tour map to guide you through. Have this with you and you are good to go. Summarize 13 things to do in Tanjung Sepat in this blog post. Here is the  Tanjung Sepat map in PDF :

Our itinerary: Ah Hock Tanjung Sepat Bak Kut Teh (1 hour)-> Lover ‘s Bridge (torn down) -> Qing Ren Qiao Local Product Shop (30 minutes) -> Qing Ren Qiao Cultural Street (20minutes) -> Gano Mushroom Farm & HomeStay (30 minutes) -> Tanjung Sepat Batu Laut Beach (1 hour) -> Kuan Wellness Eco Park (30 minutes) -> Hai Yew Heng Pau (10minutes) -> Kwa Zha B Coffee -> Mei Mei ambra Juice -> Joo Fa Coffee Trading -> Mr Black Homemade Pau (10 minutes)

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

Our journey in Tanjung Sepat began with breakfast in Restoran Ah Hock Bak Kut Teh, a restaurant famous for its seafood bak kut teh. A pot of bak kut teh brimming with fish fillet, prawns, squid, pork belly for 2, priced at RM30. You can also order other items like steamed fish, vegetables, and other “dai chao” dishes.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

We prefer the classic version of bak kut teh over this. Herbs flavour are mild, taken over by seafood sweetness. Mixed feelings drinking bak kut teh that has complicated flavours in it. Prawns wasn’t fresh, but luckily pork meat was good.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

2) Tanjung Sepat Lover Bridge (No longer there) 情人橋 After lunch, we drove to Lover ‘s Bridge, which was about 5minutes away from Ah Hock. Sadly, the must-visit Lover ‘s Bridge is torn down. We didn’t even have the chance to capture the “collapsed bridge” version. What welcoming us when we reached was a a lane of sand, mud, rocks and excavator. Not sure if the bridge would be rebuilt, So in case you want to take picture with bridge streches out to the sea, there are two more bridges to the left, and right of Lover’s Bridge.

3) Tanjung Sepat Wishing Trees & Wishing Well

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

Make a wish, make a wish. Who said you can’t hang a Christmas hang on a Wishing Tree? Saw this on our way to Lover’s Bridge. So cute.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

4) Tanjung Sepat Twin Towers LOL. This is innovative by stacking up Nu Er Hong Chinese Wine to resemble Malaysia Petronas Twin Towers. It is located along Qing Ren Qiao Cultural Street, beside Qing Ren Qiao Souvenir Shop.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

Do check out also some of the “wall art mural” along the place too!

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

Ganofarm Homestay is not only a homestay, but also an important Malaysian based mushroom research company that cultivates, develops, manufactures, markets fresh mushrooms and mushroom-based products. Ling Zhi Mushoom, Abalone Mushroom, Monkey Head Mushroom, Black Jelly Mushroom, you name it, they have it. Bought a bottle of Ling Zhi Mushroom Drink – so BITTER.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

We were quite disappointed with Kuan Wellness Eco Park. It has the most outstanding theme, outfront and landscape among all other attractions in Tanjung Sepat. They are doing well for birdnest research and production, but sorry to say that, theme park wise, they still have a long way to go.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

When we first saw the charming windmill in some blog reviews, we thought Kuan Wellness Eco Park will be like a themepark in Hua Hin Swiss Sheep Farm, alongside with birdnest gallery and eco-tourism garden. Upon reaching, there’s only one small area with a windmill landed on meadow, a wooden cow to complete.

Tanjung Sepat 1 Day Trip

There’s an EcoFarm next to it, RM5 per person. If you wish to visit their birdnest center, RM10 per entry per person. We read from the website saying that they have a Nature Walk beside Kuan Wellness, but we just couldn’t find it. Paid RM20 for a cup of Snow Fungus Bird Nest Drink at their Smoke-Free Eco Cafe, and left after 20 minutes.

A trip to Tanjung Sepat is incomplete without sinking your teeth to Tanjung Sepat Pau namedly Hai Yew Heng Meat Pau and Mui Choy Pau. While Summergirl loves their Mui Choy Pau a lot, Summerkid on the other hand, fancy the meat pau filled with big chunks of pork meat, laced in saucy, sweet sauce akin to Char Siew Pau. Pretty different from the Meat Pau we normally have in KL dim sum restaurant. But RM2.80 for a small bun, we don’t think it worth the price. Hai Yew Heng has a new outlet in Johor Bahru Mount Austin too.

9) Kwo Zha B Coffee 古早味咖啡

Kwo Zha B Coffee is located few doors away from Hai Yew Heng Pau. You can buy packets of coffee here. Free testing is available too. We were told that Joo Fa Trading, which is one street away from Kwa Zha B, offers better coffee in Tanjung Sepat,

We couldn’t locate Mr Black Home Made Pau shop in Lorong 2, so before heading back to KL, we stopped by at Mr. Black Home Made Pau new shop in Jalan Bawal ( same row with 99 Supermart) and bought some pau back home. As mentioned above, some say Mr Black produces better pau than Hai Yew Heng but we feel both has their own strength. Hai Yew Heng pau size is smaller, thinner bun, more filling, more expensive, less polite service; while Mr Black has thicker bun, denser texture, more flavourful fillings, cheaper and of course, very attentive service.

We tried out Chicken Rice Wine Pau 黃酒雞包 and Deep Fried Char Siew Bun 黃金脆皮叉燒包. Chicken Rice Wine Bun sounds interesting, tastes equally unique too, just flavours of ginger was rather overloaded. Deep Fried Golden Char Siew Pau is our favourite. Mr Black Homemade Pau has been popular for their Golden Deep Fried Bun all this while. You can choose whatever pau you like, and deep fried them to get a crispy golden outer layer that adds crunchy texture to your pau, making it more “bun-licious”.

Keep the best for last! Our top favourite place – Tanjung Sepat beach. Too bad there’s no blue sky during our visit but the gloomy scene set off by abundance of dead trees and mangrove trees is stunning too!

We left after 1PM, skipping few other places which you may be interest, as below:

14)Multi-Rich Pitaya Sdn. Bhd A-126, Kampung Baru,43900 Sepang A dragon fruit farm, where you can purchase dragon fruit, quench your thirst with dragon fruit drink, or munch down dragon fruit ice cream.
