Eskute Voyager Pro Review 2024

e voyager pro rider

Eskute Voyager Pro Review: Overview

We’ve been looking forward to this Eskute Voyager Pro review for some time. Why? It gives us our first UK-based trial of a Bafang mid-drive in the form of the M200. Bafang class it as a “city” mid-drive rated at 65Nm torque — around the same as the highly regarded Bosch Performance Line Gen 3 motor — so, despite the “city” tag, the figures suggest it should be fine for at the very least moderate off-road use. The motor also weighs around the same as it’s nearest on-paper Bosch equivalent, the Performance Line, at 3.2kg. Would it rival Bosch’s impressive performance but at a much lower price?

We have already reviewed Eskute’s hub motor models, the Wayfarer and the Voyager and were impressed with the value for money that they both offered. The Pro versions now on offer both use Bafang M200 mid-drives and again, on paper, both look to offer great value on the UK market at £1549 (Eskute doesn’t sell in the US) – that price tag is at the very least several hundred pounds cheaper than most other mid-drive bikes out there.

Other upgrades on the new Pro versions include larger capacity batteries, hydraulic disk brakes and additional derailleur gears. The Voyager Pro tested here is the mid-drive version of Eskute’s leisure eMTB and with a powerful sounding mid-drive and 27.5” x 2.1” enduro style knobbies I was very curious to see how it would rival much more expensive Bosch-powered hardtail eMTBs.

e voyager pro rider

  • Great mid-drive performance for a reasonable price.
  • The battery provides excellent range
  • Most lights are something we recommend you upgrade. However, these hardwired front lights were pretty powerful.
  • The tires roll well and have a tread pattern that allows for handling different types of terrrain
  • Not a standard on all eMTBs, this bike has a sturdy kickstand

e voyager pro rider

  • Only the frontlight is hardwired (the front), we wish the rear one would have been as well.
  • Having an level lower bottom gear would be a welcome addition.

Eskute Voyager Pro Performance Review

Acceleration/Speed

The Bafang M200 mid-drive system feels like a high quality product. It starts to accelerate smoothly as soon as you apply pedal pressure (this is a ‘pure’ pedelec so there is no throttle control). Even in the lower power levels (one or two out of five levels) you can pick up speed very easily. In the higher levels you get pretty strong but steady acceleration which is a nice feature for negotiating city traffic where you might want to pull away quickly at a junction to get clear of standing traffic or on a hill start at a junction.

This is an EU spec e-bike and only for sale in Europe and the UK and that means the cut out limit for pedal assist is 15mph. There is no notable sudden ‘cut out’ of power at around 15mph, as the power progressively reduces, meaning you can cruise along at this speed without the sensation of power cutting in and out that you can get on some e-bikes with less sophisticated control systems.

The Voyager Pro posted a range of 61 miles over hilly Pennine country with a total amount of climbing of 5177ft. This is an impressive performance by any measure amounting to around 10Wh of battery capacity per mile indicating a very efficient system as you might expect from a good quality mid-drive system.

The battery capacity meter is measured in 5 x 20% level bars that disappear as capacity starts to decline steadily. Towards the end of the battery capacity there was noticeably less climbing power but still some assist even down to just before when power cuts out and the battery capacity indicator is empty. This suggests perhaps the cut out parameters are set pretty widely by Eskute, so perhaps best to stop riding a little before the battery empties itself to protect its condition.

Circuit Test

Not surprisingly the Voyager Pro showed a huge improvement in lap time once the motor was turned on and also a marked increase in speed from level 1 to 2. Thereafter there was a relatively small but notable increase in speed through levels 3,4 and 5.

Whilst I’m a fan of having as few a levels as possible (I feel three is the optimum for practical use, ideally with rider-customisable power profiles) the five levels of the Voyager Pro showed nice gradation between levels and it was always possible to cruise along the flat at around 18 mph, even with the motor off. I was noticeably more out of breath on the climb in the lower levels and climbing was pretty easy in the top three levels, a fact you can’t tell by just looking at the times of course!

All UK tested e-bikes are tested over several runs on a 0.8 mile long constant road climb with plenty of 5% grade sections and the Voyager Pro’s time of 3-minutes and 5-seconds was a few seconds off the pace of more powerful mid-drives. There was a headwind which isn’t of course always there and despite this slower than average climb it felt really easy and pleasant to ride up and I was a little surprised the clock didn’t show a faster time. The motor power never showed any dead spots in this particular test and the power came and went very smoothly, in proportion to my pedal effort. It only dropped off one or two mph from its max assisted speed on the very steepest sections which also happened to be where the course is exposed to the strongest headwind.

TWe also do a much shorter but much steeper climb up a tarmac path with gradients of 15% plus and again, although the Voyager Pro was a few seconds off the pace of the likes of top of the line mid-drives from Bosch it felt an easy climb despite the steepness, with power in level 5 being applied evenly all the way – I was never having to force the pace to keep the motor spinning at its most efficient as can happen with cheaper hub motors. My only quibble was when changing gear with the chain under load on the steeper sections as there was a small break in the power delivery to the motor. Whether this is a deliberate feature to protect the chain from excess motor power I’m not sure.

In short this is all just the kind of performance you would expect from a quality mid-drive that is meant for good all round performance rather than out and out sporty riding – and that is just what the Bafang M200 is.

It also felt very maneuverable off-road, especially in tight turns and the responsive torque sensing power, nicely graduated power levels and progressive and powerful hydraulic disk brakes also made it easy to ride the bike in slightly technical off-road conditions, where close control was paramount

Eskute Voyager Pro Specs/Features Review: Electric Components

With on paper stats of 3.2kg / 7lbs weight and a torque rating of 65Nm it looks to be a direct competitor for Bosch’s Performance Line motor. We didn’t feel it gave quite the same punch out of the blocks but it still provided more than enough low speed torque in bottom gear for just about any hill – on or off road – and its performance in hill climbing terms lay somewhere between a Bosch Active Line Plus mid-drive (50Nm torque rating) and the Bosch Performance Line which has identical torque and weight specs to the Bafang M200.

Our only small gripe was the fact it very occasionally ‘stalled’ on very steep off-road hill climbs with the power momentarily cutting out – we suspect the consequence of us applying pedal pressure in too high a gear or perhaps changing gear under load. Whatever the reason, it didn’t stop our enjoyment of a wonderfully performing motor that’s especially impressive given the bike is priced at a level comparable with many hub motor e-bikes on the market.

The Voyager Pro comes with a 540Wh frame-integrated battery that locks into the top of the downtube securely with absolutely no rattle or movement whilst riding that we could detect – even over rougher terrain. It has a very solid alloy case with strong looking plastic at either end. In short, it looks very well made, at least from the outside.

The capacity is impressive and at least as much as you would expect on the average e-mtb or hybrid style e-bike. The brand is Long Ting and whilst it would be nice to have a more recognised name, at this kind of price there have to be some compromises in spec on a mid-drive at a sub £1600 price point, and this is clearly one of them.

The central display is large and easy to read and gives you a relatively small number of data fields that are easy and quick to scroll though; trip length, odometer, max speed, average speed and estimated range. These sit beneath the permanently displayed speedometer and battery capacity meter info. The latter is a battery icon made up of a large number of capacity ‘bars’ and proved pretty accurate in measuring the gradual decline in battery capacity of during a long ride; certainly much more useful than the versions found on many cheaper hub motor models of e-bike that bounce up and down according to the load the battery is putting on the motor at any given time.

The large buttons on the separate hand control unit are easily accessible to your left thumb and like the display are highly ergonomic and make for an easy to use control setup, whether you are scrolling up or down the five power levels or turning the hardwired front LED on or off. It’s all in keeping with the function of the bikes as a leisure e-mtb that, whilst not obsessed with minimalism, has an emphasis on the useful and practical without going for information overload.

Eskute Voyager Pro Review: Components and Accessories

The brakes and gearing system used on the Voyager Pro are by L-Twoo and Kamros respectively; buyers might be so used to seeing Shimano and SRAM, even on budget e-bikes that they might be a little suspicious of new names rather than tried and trusted ones.

We found any such concerns would be misplaced as overall the componentry worked well, with one or two minor gripes covered in the detail below. Moreover, the components spec was suited to the mid-drive trail nature of the e-bike, giving smooth, powerful braking and reliable gear changing. Ten or more gears would have been even nicer as would a lower bottom gear, but overall we were pretty satisfied with all the components and accessories.

The rear Kamros branded hydraulic disk brake at first behaved a little strangely, needing a few pumps of the brake level before it achieved full power – obviously not ideal. However, we unscrewed the small port on the fluid reservoir by the lever and this cured the problem; we guess a little air may have worked its way into the system and this seemed to release it.

From thereon, the Kamros brakes worked very well. There was plenty of power to stop very quickly if needed and they also provided quite sophisticated, progressive braking, which proved useful on our test of technical off-road handling.

Overall they are part of what makes the Voyager Pro such good value for money; a mid-drive, large capacity battery and capable hydraulic disc brakes are a high performing combination no doubt and found on few if any other e-bikes at this price.

The construction looks very strong, with meaty welds and a super strong looking and very beefy downtube which houses the frame-integrated battery. All this strength no doubt adds to the sizable heft of the bike at around 53lbs / 24kg. Despite the very solid construction it has nice clean lines, largely due to the frame-routed cables which are fed through the downtube to the motor (which also houses the controller) with rear brake and gear cables exiting at the back of the motor and running unobtrusively along the underside of the chainstays.

There’s not too much say about the fork other than it performs as you expect a budget steel sprung fork to. It took the edge off bigger bumps certainly though it did lack compression over smaller bumps and there was noticeable pogo-stick-like rebound if riding over a kerb for example with little useful damping.

Again, with all the great value going into the motor, battery size and brakes we would say this is an acceptable compromise and certainly some kind of front suspension is always useful on e-bike you are likely to want to take off-road regularly.

Drivetrain / Shifting

The L-Twoo A5 9-speed derailleur groupset performed well and shifted reliably – if sometimes somewhat noisily – under load. Whilst the gearing was fairly low, it would have been nice to have even lower gearing for the steepest off road climbs, the system offering a bottom gear ratio of around 96 gear inches from the combination of a 38 tooth front chainring and 32 tooth rear sprocket (and a top gear of 33 gear inches from the 11 tooth smallest rear sprocket).

Still, it’s a step up in the range of gearing offered compared to Eskute’s more budget hub motor models and that’s what you would expect on a mid-drive over a hub motor machine, as mid-drives can tackle steeper hills. The derailleur itself looked reasonably well made but we can’t comment on its longevity – though at around $60 for a replacement available at AliExpress et al, if it does get damaged or wear out, a like- for-like replacement won’t break the bank.

Climbing ability

The gearing offers plenty of climbing ability

The hydraulic brakes proved to be rather effective at stopping

Effective hydraulic disk brakes

ALways a useful feature - the fork is a lockout suspension

Useful lockout suspension

Contact Points / Comfortability

The seat was well padded and plenty comfortable and together with the upright riding position gave a very comfortable-feeling ride.

The Voyager Pro runs on 27.5” x 2.1” (54-584) CST Jack Rabbit tires which combine great road speed and plenty of nice traction even in slippy, muddy off-road conditions. The latter is perhaps surprising given the gravel type nature of the tread (rather than using the aggressive knobbly tread you find on out and out performance e-mtbs). There is a layer of puncture protection consisting of tight weave poly-fiber material between the tread and the casing.

Extras / Accessories

There is a hardwired front LED light which gave great illumination, even on unlit roads and a battery powered rear light (red LEDs take far less power than white LEDs so this economizing makes sense, even if a hard wired rear light would have been nice). The Voyager Pro also comes with a sturdy kickstand and mtb type mudguards (i.e. offering some protection vs mud but not as good as full length ones). It’s possible to fit a rear pannier rack too, as there are two threaded attachment points near the bottom of the seat stays – though none near the top, so a suitable design should be used if you do wish to fit one.

The Voyager Pro is a great trail bike for all conditions

Eskute Voyager Pro Review: Summary / Where to Buy

The Eskute Voyager Pro would be a great choice if you want the performance benefits of a mid-drive – in the form of excellent hill climbing ability and impressive power consumption – without having to pay in the region of £2000 to £3000 which is the more usual price for a mid-drive on the UK market.

We were surprised how capable a hill climber it was, even off-road and how able it was on technical trails – whilst not in the same league as, say, a Bosch Performance-powered e-mtb it was certainly superior to every hub motor e-mtb or trail style e-bike without an independent throttle that we have tried (regular readers will know throttle only machines are not classed as e-bikes in the UK).

Who would the Voyager Pro suit? Perhaps ‘adventurous off-road beginner’ would be an ideal rider profile description. If you fancy the idea of trying off-road riding with some slightly technical and harder tracks mixed in with forestry tracks and the like but don’t feel ready to splash out thousands on a premium off-road machine then this e-bike sits pretty much in a niche of its own.

We are not talking a bike capable of extreme adrenaline inducing descents and vertiginous climbs with big rock steps, which much pricier e-mtbs may be made for, rather an e-bike that will allow you to dip a toe into trail conditions that are less perfect than smoothish fire roads and canal towpaths, which is the natural territory of many hub-motored e-mtbs; the responsive mid-drive and reassuring hydraulic disk brakes give you the performance potential to make that small step up that might lead on to bigger and more expensive things one day…

Having said all this the Voyager Pro would also make a great commuter or leisure e-bike if fitted with a rack, especially if you have lengthy unsurfaced tracks you want to cover on a regular basis – the combination of large battery and efficient motor give that impressive range whilst the comfortable ride quality also lends itself to longer days in the saddle.

Whilst there appears to be the occasional third party retailer of Eskute e-bikes, the brand is, by and large, a direct to consumer set up, with a Chinese HQ, an assembly plant in Poland and a UK warehouse, but no dealer network in the UK. In other words you buy direct from the manufacturer and get any spares or replacement parts directly from them too.

‘Happy Riding, make sure to let us know if you have any questions down in our comments section or if you think we left anything out in this review of the Eskute Voyager Pro.

E Tourer rear brake maintenance

  • Thread starter richard63

I have a Pro Rider E Tourer bike that's now about 2 years old. I have a problem with an excessive screeching noise from the rear brake when the brake is applied. It really is ear shattering! It also seems to be very "grabby" in the sense that it's now very easy to lock up the wheel with modest pressure on the break handle. The problem is compounded by the fact that the only wording on the brake assembly is in Chinese characters so I don't even know what kind of brake I'm dealing with. Can anyone help with some advice on what the problem might be and how to take the brake apart for repair/maintenance? A link to a YouTube video would also be appreciated as I can't seem to find one.

Start by removing the brake pads and inspect them for wear or contamination from dirt, oils, road grime. Pads are so cheap it isn't worth your time and effort to attempt cleaning suspect pads. When in doubt replace. If you don't know what to buy, take them to your local bike shop. The rotors (discs) should be cleaned and de-glazed. You can start by cleaning with an old tee shirt with isopropyl alcohol. *Only while the pads are off! Then de-glaze using a clean Scotchbrite pad, once more with a clean rag and alcohol. Install new pads. 1/2 hour for all. There are fancier more expensive means, but unnecessary though. If this is more than you care to do, any regular bike shop can preform the task for a reasonable charge. This all maybe wasted. I just searched your bike and saw it on Amazon. It doesn't appear this bike has disc brakes does it? Maybe take a few pics and upload them for a more defined answer to your question.

  • Jul 8, 2017

J.R. many thanks for your prompt response to my problem. Unfortunately, you're right, it isn't a disc brake and,, although I have no experience of bike disc brakes, I do have experience of car disc brakes so feel confident that I could have dealt with it had it been so. However, I have no experience with a brake like this and, as I said, I don't even know what kind it is let alone how to deal with it. Of course, I could take it into my local Halfords but my last experience of them wasn't great and I'd like to learn how to maintain it myself. Anyway, in response to your suggestion, here's a few pictures of the offending beast, if the perspective looks a little odd in some of them it's due to the fact that I turned the bike upside down for the best shot. I also notice that in image 002, there is the name(?) Dia-Compe stamped on the casing:

It's a ROLLER brake. Hideous design, when you consider the efficiency of rim or disc versions. My only guess is that it was offered to approach the braking force of hydraulic disc brakes with only a cable actuated shoe. The ventilated flange is to dissipate heat. Why do I use the word HIDEOUS? Note the line in the link where it states "only works in one direction". So it won't work if for any reason you're rolling backwards. The designer must have lived on the salt flats. See here: http://volto.co.nz/docs/Diacompe_Service.pdf

  • Jul 9, 2017

Many thanks Sonoboy, the link is very clear and exactly what I needed. I must admit, with the benefit of hindsight, that the shriek from it does sound more like a dry metal bearing or something similar rather than the squeal you can get from dirty brake pads. I'll order some grease and put another posting up later to let you know if it cures the problem. I take your point about it not working in reverse and that's something I wasn't aware of or is mentioned in the User Manual that comes with the bike. Personally, I think that that's disappointing as anything that could relate to safety when riding should be in the Manual. Thanks again.

  • Jul 14, 2017

Ok so it took a few days for the grease to get here but a judicious application of it has solved the problem. The brake is now absolutely silent and is firm, but not fierce, in braking mode. In fact it's as good as new. What I also found interesting is that it clearly states on the leaflet that came with the grease that grease should be applied "if the brake is noisy" or "if the braking is fierce". Both of these symptoms I reported to Halfords when I took it in to them and was charged for "cleaning the brake out". There was no mention of adding grease and, although it was quieter for about a month, it wasn't totally quiet and became very noisy and fierce. It really does make you wonder if their mechanic really knew what he was doing. Anyway, it just makes me more determined to learn how to do my own maintenance. I always used to maintain my bikes so no reason why I shouldn't in the future. Thanks again to the both of you that contributed to a solution. It';s possible I'll be back with some more questions!

  • Jun 22, 2021

I'm thinking of replacing the Dia Compe (roller) rear brake on my Pro Rider. I did a search and this raised a few questions 1) a Dia Compe MLB-50 is available (from Japan - postage to UK doubles the cost ) but is that the correct unit for the E-Voyager Pro-Rider ? 2) does the replacement have to be Dia Compe or is there a generic alternative (e.g there are some "servo 90" units on Ebay that look similar and are much cheaper) ?

Eskute Voyager Pro Review 2022 | Electric Bike Report

Home » Articles » Eskute Voyager Pro Review 2022 | Electric Bike Report

Pro Rider Voyager E Bike

  • Add to quote

These look good and are a good price. Has anyone bought or used one ?

e voyager pro rider

Several members have Pro Rider E-Wayfarer bikes which we find very good. I imagine all their products are similarly good, Alan.

e voyager pro rider

We have 2 and we love them. Can really recommend this company. So many people have admired our bikes we carry the company's business cards to give away - nothing in it for us apart from not having to write down the companies address & tel. no. each time! Go for it.

e voyager pro rider

I bought a couple of their folding bikes last year. Brilliant bits of kit, loads of power (they haul my 16 stone carcase no trouble) Best possible accessory you can get for a motorhome. The fittings are a bit on the cheap side but at a THIRD of the cost of a Giant make full size bike (which a pal of mine has bought at £1500 EACH I reckon they are excellent value. ) The batteries give an excellent range, mine are now 12 months old and I have not noticed any drop off in performance or capacity. I did have a slight problem with one of them. Rang Pro-rider and a replacement part arrived the next day!

Just noticed my age is shown as 42. I wish!! Gonna change that.......sometime in 2031.

e voyager pro rider

We have had one for over a year and have been very pleased with it. Several weeks ago someone did a comparison with this and another make of bike www.motorhomefacts.com/ftopict-122805-electric.html+bikes I hope this is the right link!! We also have one of their mobilty scooters and again, very, very pleased with it

We have two and love them Good Company to deal with

Thanks for all the replies Always useful to get reccomendations. These bikes and the five year guarantee looked almost too good to be true

e voyager pro rider

After some research of the different makes & models I just bought one of these & very pleased with it http://www.oxygenbicycles.com/electric-bikes/oxygen-emate-city.html

e voyager pro rider

We bought a couple of Geebikes at the Newark show this year and they been excellent.Had a couple of minor niggles which have been sorted out quickly. See this company report

I have a Pro Rider folding bike and my wife has an AS folding bike. I can say that the Pro Rider is a more substantial stronger bike. The performance of the two is more or less the same. I can't speak for customer service as my bike has been trouble free it gets daily use and is now over a year old, Alan.

The best electric bike for most people

RadPower RadCity 5 Plus

It's not the flashiest, but we think the RadCity 5 Plus will more than fit the needs of most riders. It's comfortable, offers plenty of power, and comes with lights, fenders, and a rear rack for your gear. Plus, RadPower makes a lot of accessories that let you easily customize the bike.

In our tests, we found the RadCity 5 Plus to be responsive and powerful enough to get us up and down hills easily, and do so in comfort. It is a bit heavy at 64 pounds, but that should only be an issue if you try to go farther than it's 55-mile range.

Ride1Up Turris

For those who don't want to spend too much on an ebike, the Ride1Up Turris offers just about everything you could want, with few compromises.

Aventon Aventure.2

If you're looking for an ebike that can go anywhere, look no further. This bike is responsive, stable in all conditions, including snow, has both lights and turn signals, and even comes with fenders.

Charge Bikes City

This affordable ebike has a neat feature: Its handlebars can turn sideways, so it'll take up less room when you have to store it in a hallway or some other cramped space. It's also fairly light, has a great range, and has a built-in rear rack.

Juiced Ripracer

This BMX-style fat tire bike delivers some great thrills on trails and dirt paths. It has a powerful motor to get you around, but no suspension.

Ride1Up Roadster v2

This lightweight ebike lacks some niceties you'll find on more expensive rides — you'll have to provide your own lights and fenders — but it delivers a zippy ride around town at a great price.

RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus

A truly versatile ebike that can be configured with dozens of accessories. It's also compact, powerful, very comfortable to ride, and one of the most affordable cargo bikes around.

GoCycle G4i+

This futuristic-looking ebike is made from carbon fiber, which keeps its weight to just 36 pounds. It has a speedy electronic shifter, responsive and powerful motor, and a great range for something this small. It ain't cheap, though.

Yuba Supercargo CL

When you need to haul really big loads, the Supercargo CL is your best bet. It has a ton of space, yet is very stable and even fun to ride.

NIU BQi-C3 Pro

With dual batteries, this bike has the endurance to get you wherever you need to go. And, it's often on sale for a very reasonable price.

The best electric bikes are an ideal choice if you want to cut down on the time you spend in the car. From quick daily commutes to short trips into town, these bikes can help you get up to speed and climb slopes with relative ease.

But it can be hard to tell how they really perform until you take a ride. That's why we put the best electric bikes to the test, to help you find the right ebike for your needs, whether you want to head into the office or take a leisurely ride.

After hours on the road, we felt that the Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus is the best electric bike overall, as it was comfortable, has three levels of powered assistance and the battery lasts 50 miles, so it should easily see you through most trips.

Fortunately, that's not your only option. If you're after a different design, increased range, or alternative features, we've rounded up the best electric bikes you can buy right now. Or, if you're after an option that won't break the bank, consider the best budget electric bikes instead.

best electric bike

Rad Power RadCity5 Plus

1. Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

For the vast majority of riders, the Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus will be the best electric bike. It has a comfortable design, plenty of power, and a multitude of mounting points for things such as baskets and child seats. Plus, it comes with a rear rack and mudguards. Its 7-speed shifter, combined with three levels of pedal assistance and a twist throttle is more than enough to get you up even the steepest of hills.

Rad Power says that the RadCity5 should get upwards of 50+ miles on a charge; in our testing, it came fairly close — about 40 miles.

We really enjoyed pedaling around on this bike, which is offered in both step-through and step-over models. Its battery, while not fully integrated into the downtube, provides plenty of range, and can also be used to charge your phone (with the right adapter). The one caveat is that this bike weighs a hefty 64 pounds, so you're not going to want to lug it up stairs.

At a starting price of $1,999, it's reasonably affordable, but you should check out our Rad Power Bikes promo codes for the latest discounts.

Best affordable ebike

Ride1Up Turris parked outside against wall

2. Ride1Up Turris

While there are plenty of great electric bikes that cost more than $2,000, the Ride1Up Turris shows that you can get a lot of value from an ebike that costs much less. During our testing, we found the Turris' 750W motor to be more than powerful enough for most situations. We were equally impressed with how quickly it responded when we started pedaling, as many budget ebikes exhibit a slight delay in these situations. (There was a slight lag when using just the throttle, though).

Other standout features include its mechanical disc brakes, easy-to-read digital display, and bright 60 Lux headlight. Included front and rear fenders helped keep our clothes clean on wet days, and its wide, 27.5 x 2.4-inch tires made for a comfortable ride — so much so that we thought that the front suspension felt a bit extraneous.

There's no taillight, so you'll want to check out our picks for the best bike lights , and unlike some pricier ebikes, you'll have to assemble a few pieces of the bike yourself, including the handlebars, front wheel, and pedals. We also had to make a few adjustments to the fenders, which might mean a trip to your local bike shop.

But for those who want an affordable electric bike to get around town, the Turris should be at the top of your list.

Aventon Aventure.2 sitting outside at park

3. Aventon Aventure.2

If you're looking for a fat-tire electric bike that's less than $2,000, the Aventon Aventure.2 is hard to beat. It's as good off-road as it is on pavement, has a beefy battery and a clear color display, as well as fenders that'll save your clothes from getting too muddy. Other niceties include a brake-activated rear light and turn signals.

The Aventure.2 has both pedal-assist and throttle modes, and the battery and wires are neatly integrated into the frame. What's more, the battery can be removed for charging. The battery lasted nearly the advertised 60 miles on a charge, but, as with other ebikes, we drained it much faster when we relied on the throttle.

While not as capable as a dedicated mountain bike, the Aventure.2 was able to get us up and over hilly terrain, and its torque sensor was quick to translate our pedaling into power.

Our only real critiques were the bike's 77-pound weight and its front suspension fork, which felt unnecessary. Otherwise, it's an excellent bike for the price.

best for commuters

Charge Bikes City review

4. Charge Bikes City

If you plan on commuting to work, Charge Bikes City may well be the best ebike for you. Not only does it come with features like full-fenders to keep the mud off and a rear rack for a pack or bag, but it does everything well for a very reasonable price. The Charge City has a five level power assist, as well as a full-power throttle button, should the need or hill arise.

The biggest reason why we think this bike is best for commuters is that its handle bars fold flat, so you can more easily store it in an apartment or a cubicle at work. It comes with all the necessary bells and whistles a commuter is going to want, including the bell (actually a superior and very loud electronic horn). The bike is available in both step-over and step through, and in a few color options, too.

The City's electric assist is so smooth you'll think you're doing all the work yourself. At night, the bike's lights sufficiently lit up the road and the throttle helped us zip around potential trouble when we felt out of gas. Its advertised range of 50 miles held up, too; we found we only had to recharge the bike every three days using it on our regular commute.

Founded by folks from biking icon Cannondale, Charge's sui generis feature is that even newbies can assemble the bike right out of the box in 10 minutes or less. All you basically have to do is put the front wheel on.

Best BMX-style bike

Juiced RipRacer parked on mountain trail

5. Juiced Ripracer

The Juiced Ripracer is a lot of fun, and costs a lot less than you might think. It's one of the more affordable offroad ebikes we've tested, and it can go just about anywhere. This fat-tire bike has 20-inch wheels and a 40.3-inch wheelbase that's meant for trails and other unpaved surfaces. However, its lack of shock absorbers, like most e-mountain bikes, means you're in for a rougher ride.

Its 750W motor delivered some real get-up-and-go, and, thanks to its low-end torque, was great for charging up hills. In one concession to its price, the Ripracer has a cadence, rather than a torque sensor, so you have to rotate the pedals a couple of time before the assist kicks in. As it's a BMX-style bike, the Ripracer is a lot smaller than other mountain e-bikes, which also makes it easier to maneuver around tight spaces.

Ride1Up Roadster V2 parked outside

6. Ride1Up Roadster V2

At first glance, the Ride1Up Roadster V2 It looks like a regular, non-motorized commuter bike — the better to blend in with traditional rides — but concealed inside is a battery capable of up to 30 miles of range.

The Roadster V2 is also one of the lightest ebikes we tested — it weighs just 33 pounds, so carrying it around shouldn't be a problem — and although there's no step-through model, Ride1Up offers it in two sizes to accommodate riders of nearly all heights.

The Roadster V2 was fast and fun on flat and rolling terrain, and its belt drive made for a very quiet ride. However, this is a single-speed model, so it's a bit hard to get moving on hills.

There are a few concessions to get to this price: The Roadster V2 doesn't have lights of any kind, nor does it have fenders, and it uses rim, rather than disc brakes. We also found its display to be on the small side. Still, if you can live with those compromises, you'll enjoy the Roadster V2.

Radpower RadRunner 3 Plus e-bike in backyard

7. RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus

How's this for an endorsement? Our reviewer loved this bike so much that he decided to buy one for himself.

While it can't haul as heavy loads as some other larger (and much more expensive) cargo bikes, the RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus is more than capable of carrying you, your kids, and plenty of groceries wherever you need to go. We loved its responsive 750W motor, its comfortable ride, and its low center of gravity, thanks to its 3.3-inch thick, 20-inch tires.

However, we found it to be fairly heavy, tipping the scales at 75 pounds, so you're not going to want to try pedal it without any power assist. But we found its advertised 45-mile range to be pretty accurate, so long as we didn't go too heavy on the throttle.

Aside from its performance, what made the RadRunner 3 Plus stand out so much to us was its versatility: You can outfit the bike with any number of combinations of racks, seats, bags, and other accessories to truly customize it for your needs. And, its relatively low price for a cargo bike makes it a real bargain for those looking to replace their car with an electric bike.

GoCycle G4i+ parked at Moynihan Train Hall

8. Gocycle G4i+

The Gocycle G4i+ looks like something a supercar designer would build, which isn't surprising given that it was conceived by former McLaren sports car engineer Richard Thorpe. Not only is this bike's unique wheels-on-one-side and tapered body eye-catching, but we were able to fold it up in less than a minute into a size small enough to get us on and off a train, and past our security and into our office elevator. At 36 pounds, it's one of the lightest folding electric bikes out there, too.

Despite that, this bike was a real pleasure to ride. Its electric shifter responded near instantly, as did the pedal assist and throttle. However, while the G4i+ has daytime running lights, you'll have to pay extra for a legit headlight, as well as mudguards. Also, the G4i+ has a great smartphone app, but one of the flimsiest methods of holding your phone on the bike itself — a cheap solution for a bike that costs $7,000.

If you're looking for something slightly more affordable, GoCycle also sells the G4i ($5,999) and the G4 ($4,799). A 2022 version of the G4 has an injection molded composite mid-frame. Still too much for your wallet? Then you should check out the Brompton Electric C-Line Explore , which starts around $3,000.

The Yuba Supercargo CL can haul an astounding 500 pounds, making it one of the heftiest electric cargo bikes in its class. Yet, it offers a surprisingly stable ride, thanks to its low center of gravity. Its cargo area is very customizable, letting you convert it from a place to carry groceries to a space to tote your tots to soccer practice.

Magna hydraulic brakes and a Bosch mid-drive motor were very responsive, though the relatively small 20-inch tires and lack of suspension did make bumps feel a bit jarring. The Supercargo CL starts at around $6,000, but is incredibly customizable; you can select from a range of accessories to adapt the cargo area to suit your needs.

If you're looking for a cargo bike that can haul more than the Rad Power RadRunner 3 Plus, this is the model to consider.

NIU BQi-C3 Pro E-bike

10. NIU BQi-C3 Pro

There's nothing worse when running out of power when riding your electric bike, especially if you're miles from home — and at the bottom of a hill. With its dual batteries, the NIU BQi-C3 Pro is the best electric bike for those who have range anxiety, as it can give you up to 90 miles of range before you need to recharge. And, that's no boast — based on our testing, we found that 90-mile estimate to be pretty accurate, too.

But range isn't the only thing we liked about the BQi-C3 Pro: It has mechanical disc brakes, front and rear lights, and a rear rack so you can carry things wherever you plan to go. A carbon belt drive is another nice-to-have feature, as it's quiet and easier to maintain than a traditional metal chain. Its step-through design also makes the bike easy to use for riders of all sizes; we tried it with both a 5' 11" rider and a 5' 3" rider, and both found it comfortable.

Our only real complaint with the BQi-C3 Pro is that at 70.5 pounds, it's one of the heaviest electric bikes we've tested that's not a cargo bike, so this is not a model to buy if you have to go up any stairs. Still, the bike's 500W motor was more than powerful enough to get its bulk moving with ease.

The bike's regular price is $2,199, but we've seen it on sale during the holidays for as low as $1,299, so wait for a sale to pick it up.

We're continually reviewing and testing ebikes so that we can recommend the best electric bikes for a range of situations. However, these are some that don't quite make the cut that are still great options if you're after more choice.

Ride1Up LMT'd V2: from $1,445 at Ride1Up

Ride1Up LMT'd V2: from $1,445 at Ride1Up Like the Ride1Up Roadster, the LMT'd V2 takes a no-frills approach to the commuter ebike. We enjoyed riding it, but think that the Charge Bikes City is still the better option for commuters, even if it is $200 more.

Orbea Diem: from $4,599 at Orbea

Orbea Diem: from $4,599 at Orbea The Diem is another city-focused commuter bike, designed to help you navigate busy urban roads. We enjoyed our rides, but felt the handlebars were too wide to navigate tight traffic or narrow lines without hitting other vehicles.

What to look for when buying an electric bike

Pedal-assist or throttle? All electric bikes have what's called pedal-assist; you start pedaling, and the bike's motor kicks in to make your ride a little easier. But you need to put in at least some work: you won't go anywhere unless you pedal. Most electric bikes will also let you set the level of assistance, so you can decide how hard you want to pedal.

However, some electric bikes will also have a throttle. Press a button or push a lever, and the bike will do all the work for you — no pedaling needed! Using a throttle will quickly eat up the battery life on the bike, so you'll get far less of a range if you don't want to pedal at all.

Motor type Less expensive electric bikes traditionally use a rear hub motor. Mid-drive motors located in the center pedal crank shaft tend to be more expensive but offer better overall balance and smoother shifting.

Motors are also rated based on their power, measured in Watts. Typically, the least powerful motor will be 250 Watts, but unless you're a very large person or planning to go up really steep hills, the motor size shouldn’t be a major determining factor for your purchase. More important,  there is no industry standard for measuring Watts (is it continuous or peak and if peak, for how long?). So in general, a motor’s Watt rating isn’t a reliable indication of power.

Battery size Consider where you live. If you're in San Francisco you're going to want more help than if you're cruising around Austin. Watt hours (Wh) is the most important figure for comparison—it takes into account battery output and battery life to give you a better sense of available power. Higher Wh translates into more range.

Many electric bike makers will also include an estimated range (usually about 40 miles) that you can get off a single charge. You should take this figure with a large grain of salt, as that number is usually determined under ideal circumstances: A fairly lightweight person riding on flat terrain with no wind, and at the perfect ambient temperature for the battery. Range is also dependent on the level of power assist being used, whether full-throttle has been applied and for how long, and your average speed. As they say, your mileage may vary.

Removable or built-in battery? Most bike batteries will handle rides of about 40 miles and need to be plugged in for at least a couple of hours to get to 80 percent of capacity. So if you have a more demanding commute, consider a model that lets you swap out the battery rather than a bike with an integrated battery.

Also, if you live in a place where you can't bring your bike inside or get close to a wall outlet (such as if you live in a walk-up apartment), definitely look for a bike with a removable battery. It will make your life a lot easier.

Step-over or Step-through? Many electric bike makers will offer their bikes in two configurations: Step-over (which has a top bar that runs parallel to the ground) and Step-through (the bar is angled downwards). Once upon a time, step-through models were traditionally thought of as women's bikes, but that perception is changing. It's generally easier to get on and off a step-through bike, as you don't have to lift your leg over a bar.

Safety features If you're planning to ride your electric bike in traffic or in low-light conditions (such as dawn and dusk), it's worth looking for an electric bike with built-in head and taillights. While increasingly common, it's not a standard feature on all models.

How we test electric bikes

To help you find the best electric bike for your needs, we put each model through its paces across long rides, commutes, and leisurely cycles. Most of the time, we ride the ebikes on roads, but will occasionally handle rougher terrain if the bike is designed to withstand these conditions. If a particular model is designed for a certain type of use such as city commuting we make sure to test it in a proper city environment, or if it's made for adventure, we'll take it to the trails.

But before taking them outside, many electric bikes need assembly, so we put them together, follow the instructions, and assess how practical and easy it is to do. Then, we take them for an initial ride, looking at the responsiveness of the motor, power delivery lag times, and the general comfort of the bike.

Then we try them out in a range of conditions (bright, rainy, windy, at night) to see how they handle different weathers, and if the built-in lights are powerful enough to let you see oncoming obstacles. And, alongside this, we test other safety features like bells and horns.

Many of these tests apply to regular bicycles, but one of the most important factors for any ebike is the range. We put the manufacturer's estimates to the test, to make sure that you don't get caught out with a flat battery half-way through your ride or while at the office, and the ease and speed or recharging.

Since most electric bikes come with an app to monitor the battery capacity and adjust several settings, including some locking or safety features, we also download the app and evaluate its ease of use, reliability, and the usefulness of its features.

What are the different types of electric bike?

Generally speaking, electric bikes fall into the same categories as non-electric bikes. Here's a quick summary of some of the kinds of electric bikes you'll find.

Road bike: These are meant solely for riding on roads, and are designed for speed. They will have thinner tires and curved handlebars, so that the rider will be crouched forward. Higher-end models may also be made out of carbon fiber, so as to make the bike as light as possible.

Mountain bike : Designed for off-road use, mountain bikes will have thick, knobby tires, full suspension, and a burlier frame to better absorb bumps and jumps.

Fat tire bikes : Similar to mountain bikes, fat tire bikes are meant to be ridden off-road, usually on very soft ground, such as mud, sand, and snow. As their name suggests, these bikes have very wide tires — as much as four inches — which helps keep a grip on unsteadier terrain.

City/Commuter bike: Made for urban dwellers who need to get around town, a commuter bike will have tires that are somewhere in between a road and a mountain bike. Generally, the bikes will be configured so that the rider's back is vertical when seated, which gives them a better view of their surroundings.

Cargo bike: These bikes are made for carrying heavy loads, and will have a cargo area either in the front or rear of the bike. Because of the payload area, these bikes often tend to me much longer and heavier — and more expensive — than a typical bike.

Can you get fit on an electric bike

Many people assume that riding an electric bike means little to no effort, but that’s a misconception. While e-bikes provide assistance, they don’t replace the physical effort entirely, making them suitable for a range of fitness levels.

In fact, research from Brigham Young University found that cyclists using electric mountain bikes reached 94% of the heart rate they achieved on regular bikes during a six-mile course with 700 feet of elevation. Despite the assistance, riders were still working hard, though they perceived the effort to be less intense, all while completing the course faster.

What is a good speed for an electric bike?

In the U.S., electric bikes are limited to 20 miles per hour; that is, they can only provide you with power — either through pedal-assist or with a throttle — until the bike hits 20mph. While you can easily go faster than 20mph on an electric bike, the rest of that power will have to be provided by you — or gravity.

How much does an electric bike cost?

Electric bikes range widely in price. Some of the best budget electric bikes start at around $1,000; you can certainly find models for less, but quality will be less too.

The bulk of electric bikes cost anywhere from $1,500 to around $2,500, and there are hundreds of models in this price range.

Higher-end and specialized electric bikes — such as cargo bikes — will cost upwards of $3,000, and can easily reach $6,000 to $8,000, which is a sizable investment.

What are the regulations for ebikes?

There has been a lot of confusion about ebikes (pedal assist versus throttle bikes) and where you can legally ride them. Some municipalities have banned ebikes from bicycle paths, for example.

Many places classify ebikes depending on whether they can go full throttle and have a maximum speed of 20 or 28 mph. There are three official classifications:

Class 1 : Ebikes that only assist while you pedal, with a top speed of 20 mph.

Class 2 : Ebikes with a throttle that don't require you to pedal but have a top speed of 20 mph.

Class 3 : Ebikes that only assist while you pedal, with a top speed of 28 mph.

So check your local regulations before you buy. And always wear a helmet.

Cannondale Moterra SL 1 review: an almost flawless electric mountain bike

I spent three months testing this e-bike conversion kit — and it turned me into an actual cyclist

Forget burpees — this dumbbell workout sculpts your abs and arms in 15 minutes

  • Marc-G Hello, I noticed a couple of errors in the article around pricing on a couple of the bikes. Regarding the Gazelle Medeo T9 classic, your article list a starting price of $1999 but clicking the link takes you to their site where the least expensive model is $2499 and no model called Medeo T9 Classic is available nor can such a model be found with search. The second model is the VanMoof S3 which is listed in the article with a starting price of $1999 but going to the site shows a price of $2299. As someone trying to persuade his wife that an ebike would be a worthwhile purchase for me, I’d be grateful if you would clarify these discrepancies. One last thing. On the article itself, it says it was published 21 hours ago when it was actually published on July 21. I’m going to assume some aspect of it was updated but I can’t spot any changes to it and would appreciate it if whatever was updated could be noted somewhere. Many thanks for the article. Pricing confusion aside, it’s been quite helpful for me. Reply
  • Marc-G Thanks for the reply. Just went back to the top of this page and realized that it said 2020. However, if that’s the case, why is it made to look like a recent article? Does that mean all the authors did was change the title from best of 2020 to best of 2021? That seems kind of disingenuous to me. Reply
  • mprospero Hi Marc - We've recently updated the pricing for all the models. We've also added new ones to this list as we've reviewed them. Reply
  • GFujioka You do your readers a disservice and reveal your partiality by not listing the 64,5 lb weight of your number one bike. Cheers. Reply
  • gtilford One factor that seems to be missing from virtually every review-support. I have some friends who could not get parts for their ebikes for 6+months, and they were only 1 year old. I've had problems getting parts with a highly recommended brand. The bike is well made, it performs well, but parts are nearly unobtainable. If I knew then when I know now about parts availability I wouild not have purchased the brand. Reply

NCM Paris Folding Electric Bike Review

ncm paris folding electric bike

When you purchase through links on our website, we may earn a commission. Affiliate disclosure.

If you are looking for a cheap folding electric bike , with all the bells and whistles, then the NCM Paris is one of the best available for the price. It is certainly not the cheapest available but has a very high specification for the money. In this review, I will go over the specification in greater detail and give you some of the pros and cons.

Quality Electric Bikes

NCM are a German company that was founded in 2014. Their bikes have quickly become some of the best-selling e-bikes in Europe. The parent company is Leon Cycles of Hannover. One of the reasons for the success of NCM is that they supply a range of high-quality, but affordable electric bikes. I have previously reviewed three different models and they all provide excellent quality at a realistic price.

ncm paris folding electric bike

Folding electric bikes are a perfect solution for the daily commuter, especially if you go to work on a train and work a couple of miles from the nearest station. For me the definition of the perfect folding commuter bike is as follows:

  • The bike has to be easy to fold and unfold
  • Fairly lightweight
  • Pannier rack
  • Puncture resistant tyres
  • Good and sturdy frame
  • Preferable internal gear hub

The NCM Paris fulfils all, but two of the above criteria – it has derailleur gears, and it is a little on the heavy side. The weight penalty is an unfortunate consequence of having an e-bike, and provided you are not planning on carrying the bike for any distance, should not pose a problem.

Folding and unfolding the bike is a fairly straightforward process, and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. The bike folds down neatly, making an easy-to-carry (but somewhat heavy) bike.

ncm paris electric bike fully folded

The small SY, R2S  36v 250w geared rear hub motor is not only incredibly durable but also provides the rider with excellent levels of power when needed. The compact electric motor is fitted discreetly into the 20″ rear wheel, so as not to interfere with the folding process.

A 36v 15ah Lithium battery pack fits conveniently behind the seat. Again, this design is perfect for bikes of this type and doesn’t interfere when folding. It is unusual to find such a powerful battery on a folding electric bike at this price point. With a total energy capacity of 540wh (watt hours), you are guaranteed a range of 27 miles based on the 20wh per mile average power consumption figure. If you are frugal with your power usage, the manufacturer states a range of up to 70 miles is achievable in ECO mode. I personally think that a realistic range to expect would be in the region of 30-40 miles. This battery also comes with a handy USB charging port for mobile devices.

Built for comfort

Comfort is a very important factor when buying a commuter bike, especially a folding one. Thankfully NCM has built this bike with commuters in mind and every whim has been catered for. The excellent Selle Royal gel saddle will offer enough comfort for most people, and the overall design of the bike allows for a very relaxed riding position. The handlebar grips are ergonomically designed and importantly there is a small suspension fork at the front, that will help smooth out the lumps and bumps in the road, and even facilitate some light trail riding – this really is a very versatile little bike!

ncm paris tyres, lights and handlebar

This bike uses excellent Shimano components. The 7-speed Tourney rear derailleur combined with a grip shift offers smooth and precise gear changes. Tektro mechanical disk brakes offer ‘better than average’ braking for a bike of this type. And finally, the Zoom front suspension forks are perfect for taking the sting out of small potholes and making canal path riding easier.

Fully function control panel display:  The Das-Kit LCD display is used across the NCM range and is an excellent display providing the rider with all the information needed. including journey time and mileage. It also has 6 power levels of pedal assist, so you can fine-tune the power output to suit your ride.

I managed to have a go on one of these back in January, a customer kept a couple of these in his motor home for him and his wife and kindly lent it to me for an afternoon. I am just over 6 feet and weigh 105kg, so the bike was at its maximum recommended operating weight. With the seat and handlebar height adjusted correctly, I was pleasantly surprised at what a nice and comfortable bike it was to ride.

The combination of the fat Schwalbe tyres and front suspension made it very easy to negotiate the rather bumpy back lanes of Cornwall. As far as climbing steep hills was concerned, I was impressed with the ability of the tiny motor. I would put it on par with the standard-sized e-bikes on offer from NCM. The motor produced a lot of torque and definitely took the effort out of cycling up a 10% gradient.

My only real concern was the bike felt a little bit nervous at higher speeds, but that is only to be expected on a folding bike with a heavy person riding it. These bikes aren’t really designed for speed but are excellent for steady commuting at speeds of around 15 mph.

ncm paris folding e bike dimensions

Would I buy one?

If I was in the market for a folding e-bike, I would seriously consider the NCM Paris . It represents excellent value for money and the fact that it has mudguards, a pannier rack, lights and a kickstand fitted, means that it is excellent for the daily commute in all weathers, or even good for some weekend touring. The inclusion of a quality gel saddle and suspension forks makes this folding bike a truly comfortable and versatile all-rounder.

The other big plus point is the excellent battery capacity. You could quite easily go for a long weekend trail ride, safe in the knowledge that you are not going to run out of power.

All in all, I’m giving this bike a big thumbs up!

Best, The VoroMotors Team

My bike recently stopped working, so I reached out to Voro for assistance. They promptly sent me a new controller and even spent 30 minutes on a video call with Levin to guide me through the installation. I’m all the way in Utah, but their support made it feel like I was getting in-person service. I learned a few new things about my bike during the process, which was really helpful. A big thanks to Levin, Jim Brian, who all played a part in getting my bike back up and running. From reporting the issue to receiving and installing the controller, the whole process took about 1.5 weeks, mostly due to the shipping time for the controller. Thank you, Voro, for the excellent service!

Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We're thrilled to hear that Jim, Brian, and Levin were able to provide such exceptional support and guidance throughout your experience. It’s great to know that even from Utah, you felt like you were receiving in-person service. We're glad the new controller and video call helped get your E Ride Pro SS 2.0 back up and running smoothly.

Your satisfaction is incredibly important to us, and we're pleased that the process, though lengthy due to shipping, was handled effectively. If you have any more questions or need further assistance in the future, don't hesitate to reach out.

Just picked up my new bike from Voro Manhattan in East Village—finally, a spot in NYC that carries it! I’ve been eyeing this bike for a while, but I really wanted to check it out in person first. Amin told me Voro is a big name in the US, which made me feel good about spending $5000 here. There are lots of places selling this bike now, but some of them are pretty new and might not be around in a year or two if I need help. Feels good to shop local!

We’re proud to offer a reliable, local option for your electric bike needs. If you have any questions or need support in the future, feel free to reach out. Enjoy your new E Ride Pro SS 2.0!
