Camino de Santiago – The St. James Way

Luggage transport icon

This pilgrim’s path takes us into its spell and it leads us through a stunning and magnificent landscape

Our bicycle adventure starts in Santander, ‘The Ocean’s Bride’, along St. James’ Way. Already on the first few meters we can feel the soothing energy of the “Camino”, on which pilgrims have been drawing strength for centuries, while we get enchanted by Cantabria and Asturias with its mix of sea and mountains. We cycle on into the highlands of the northern Meseta and are impressed by the pilgrimage hubs of Burgos and Leon. Their cathedrals rank among the most beautiful ones in Spain. The green landscapes of Galicia and Santiago de Compostela herald the end of St. James’ Way and our tour. We will remember the impressions we gained on our way forever!

Travel schedule

Day 1: Arrival in Santander Your adventure begins with our Welcome Briefing in the hotel at 4 pm where you can meet the group.

Day 2: Santander - Selores Santander, ‘The Ocean’s Bride’, offers much in every respect. The bay in front of the city is one of the most beautiful in the world. The impressive limestone massif Picos de Europa, the largest nature reserve in Spain, is only about 25 km of airline away. We will cycle along the river Rio Devo, passing the impressive gorge of Hermida ‘Desfiladero de la Hermida’. Incredible rock walls rise up to 600 m into the air. A cable car will take us to the summit and viewing point of Mirador del Cable. Today’s final destination is Fuente Dè.

Day 3: Selores Selores Cervera de Pisuerga

Day 4: Cervera de Pisuerga - Santa Colomba de las Arrimadas Picos de Europa – here you can find alpine meadows, gorges, bizarre rock formations, over 40 species of orchids, wildcats, eagles and wild hoopoes. We will start today’s trip cycling uphill to then enjoy the ride down towards the reservoir lake Riano, which is nestled right in between the mountains.

Day 5: Santa Colomba de las Arrimadas - León Adios Picos de Europa! We will cross the western edge of Meseta with its endless distance and rolling hills, towards León. The royal city of León in the High Plain of Castile welcomes us. Its colorful streets are filled with life and provincial charm. It is now time to explore the huge variety of the Castilian culinary delights, such as Iberian pork, sausages, chestnuts and not to forget the delicious wine from Bierzo. We have plenty of time to discover León and to relax in our hotel.

Day 6: León - Villafranca del Bierzo We will leave the royal town behind us and travel by bus to the ancient Roman city Astorga. We invite you to visit the episcopal palace and cathedral built by the Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí. Astorga is also known for its sweet treats and chocolate, such as mantecadas and hojaladres, which are best enjoyed with a cafe con leche. From here we explore a variety of ancient little villages along Cruz de Ferra and the Templar castles in Ponferrada. Our destination today is the beautiful city of Villafranca.

Bikers on the Camino De Santiago tour

Biking is the best way to experience the Camino in a much shorter time frame than trekking if this is on your bucket list. You still get the Pilgrim feeling in every way, but stay in set places with great meals.

ebike tours camino de santiago

This is the classic example of "value for money". Never once did we have a concern about the equipment, our safety, the route, our lodging, the food, our luggage transfer.

This trip is unique and special because it is a pilgrimage. Kempton is a fantastic guide. His knowledge of the route and the culture of Spain is remarkable and makes the trip even more meaningful. In addition, he is exceptional at his job, knowing when to encourage people, when to use humor and when to gently steer people in other directions in terms behavior and attitude.

Challenging rides, beautiful countryside, superb Spanish cuisine, knowledgeable and attentive guides. Definitely a “bucket list “ tour.

Can't have a better guide for El Camino than Kempton. Great vistas well thought out routes, enchanting localities, wonderful Spanish people, historic buildings, best food of any bike trip I've taken, challenging distances and climbs but worth the views, the trip has it all. Of course, we were fortunate to also have great weather.

The Camino de Santiago – the Way of St. James – is the name of the pilgrimage route to the shrine of the apostle St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain. Our tour begins in Pamplona (famous for the Running of the Bulls). Rolling through the storied hills of the Spanish Pyrenees, never-ending vistas of grapevines signal transition into the wine-rich region of Rioja. Sample from the Pilgrims’ Wine Fountain. Tour the Gothic cathedral in Burgos and the tomb of Spain’s most famous son, El Cid. Now ride into Castilla Leon: wide open plains, farmland, and grassy hills as far as you can see. Take a day to relax and explore the shopping capital of Leon, an ancient, amazing city. (The cathedral’s stained-glass windows are massive – the second largest collection in Europe – and took 300 years to complete.) Ride to Galicia’s mountains and forests near the end of your pilgrimage. Closer to Santiago, the number of pilgrims on the trail increases; they’ve been walking for a month! The awesome sight of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela signals the completion of our adventure. Have a farewell dinner to celebrate and bid your fellow pilgrims “Buen Camino.” Lodging is included for this last night; sleep in, enjoy breakfast and then head to the airport on the 15th day.

Our May/June tour dates are best for wildflowers and green landscapes. September tours are best for the grape harvest, of course! Ask for our Guest Information Packet for more special information about how this pilgrimage ride differs from our other tours.

PEDAL HAPPY : Please see  the “VERY IMPORTANT! SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS” section of our Guest Information Packet for more information about how this “Pilgrimage Bike Tour” differs from our normal departures. Luggage service is provided, but there’s no daily support van. We carry what we need for the day on our bicycles and we cycle on a variety of surfaces: single-track trails, gravel roads and pavement. The rental bikes are hard tail 29’er mountain bikes with front suspension, so some familiarity with off-road cycling is recommended.

*E-bikes: Electric-assist bicycles are available as an option for an additional $200.00 for the tour.

Meet your fellow pilgrims at Hotel Tres Reyes. Head out for a tapas dinner to kick things off!

Hotel Tres Reyes, Pamplona

Meet us this afternoon in the salon at Hotel Tres Reyes , your lodging for tonight and tomorrow. After introductions, all ’round and an overview of the week, head out for a fun tapas dinner to kick off the journey!

Ride Roncesvalles to Pamplona

– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

+1531 ft / -3495 ft

Transfer to Roncesvalles on the French border in the Spanish Pyrenees. Head for the pilgrims’ office. Get your Pilgrim’s Passport and your first official Camino de Santiago stamp. Ride out of the mountains, through the village near where author Ernest Hemingway fished the streams for trout. Have lunch in Zubiri, next to the river where Martin Sheen drops his backpack into  The Way . Bicycle the paved path next to the river back to our starting point in Pamplona. Enjoy dinner in an unforgettable setting, hosted by Nunci, owner of Restaurant San Ignacio.

Pamplona to Estella

Hospederia Chapitel

+3168 ft / -2814 ft

Ride out of the ancient city of Pamplona past the Town Hall, the start line for the running of the bulls. A ridgeline of windmills draws closer as we climb to the viewpoint at Alto de Perdo. Enjoy a long downhill all the way to Puente La Reina. Have lunch a bridge built by the Romans that has stood for well over a thousand years. Wind your way into Estella, through small towns and the beginnings of vineyards. Explore the town before savoring a dinner prepared by one of the most passionate chefs in all of Spain.

Estella to Logroño

Hotel Husa Bracos

+2302 ft / -2948 ft

Ride up, down, and all around, dipping and diving through the vineyards of Rioja. Little pueblos spot the countryside; walkers scatter across wide-open fields. Storks nest on the church in  Los Arcos , signaling our picnic spot for lunch. Bicycle the paved trail into Logroño, lined with statues welcoming us and saluting the efforts of the ‘peregrinos’ (pilgrims.) Tonight: Relish the hustle and bustle of wealthy Logroño and the “foodie nirvana” of the Tapas Tour.

Logroño to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

+2702 ft / -1858 ft

Making your way out of the city of Logroño, take the trail past a popular fishing spot. Ride past a vineyard with an unusual scarecrow: a bird-of-prey sound machine to keep the crows away. Explore Navarette’s hilltop church , with a breathtaking surprise inside. Traverse the vineyards of a large regional co-op. Bask in the sun at the lunch stop in Najera, next to the river in the heart of town. Do your best not to overeat (good luck!). Tonight’s dinner in The Parador  in  Santo Domingo  de la Calzada – a former pilgrim’s hospital – is always stunning.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Burgos

Norte y Londres

– Breakfast – Lunch

+2671 ft / -1951 ft

Take an epic route today: Santo Domingo to San Juan de Ortega sees the ecosystem change from grassy farmland to mountains and trees. Pass through Atapuerca, the UNESCO World Heritage site whose caves cradled the remains of the earliest-known human beings in Europe. Be welcomed by the high-plains city of Burgos and its over-the-top Gothic cathedral. Dinner is on your own tonight: The gravel-voiced waiter and his perfect steaks at Meson La Cueva come highly recommended.

Burgos to Carrion de Los Condes

Hostal La Corte

+1877 ft / -2005 ft

Pedal wide gravel paths meandering across high plains. Skies as big as Montana’s occupy the horizon today and waves of grain and grass blanket the landscape. Ride through the massive and haunting remains of the Manasterio de San Antòn as we make our way to lunch in equally picturesque Castrojerìz – one of the most photographed places on the Camino. Follow a series of canals to another stop – “2nd lunch,” as we like to call it – in Fromista. The chocolate cake here is too good to miss! In the small town of Carrion de los Condes, we stay in a family-run hotel tonight and are treated like … well, family, of course!

Carrion de Los Condes to Leon

La Posada Regia

+1931 ft / -1840 ft

Hit the halfway point in the journey just before lunch today. Watch birds of prey hunt over the cornfields as you pedal toward Leon. The high-speed train to Madrid zips by, full of people preparing to start their pilgrimage there. Stay right in the ancient city, just a couple of blocks from the cathedral. Ice cream shops beckon after a long day in the saddle. Feast on Italian fare tonight: the friendly staff at Baccolino will make you want to come back again every day for the rest of your life.

Enjoy Leon: The sights. The sounds. The shopping!

– Breakfast

Enjoy a well-earned day off the bike in Leon. Shopping, massage, sightseeing, relaxing – all await today. It’s a fun city with centuries of history to explore. Spend the morning walking from cafe to cafe sampling coffee and pastries. Explore the city while doing a little shopping. Have lunch outside at a sidewalk cafe. Tour the cathedral in the afternoon. There’s lots fit in on this day off.

Leon to Rabanal del Camino

Posada el Tesin

+2279 ft / -1247 ft

Back in the saddle, leave the city behind. Roll through Hospital de Orbigo with its well-preserved Roman bridge. Stop for lunch within sight of the cathedral in Astorga. The house next door – designed by famed Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi i Cornet – is one of his most beautiful private residences. Head into new scenery on the exit from town: lavender fields and mountain scrub trees. Spend tonight in the tiny town of Rabanal del Camino, with fewer than 100 year-round residents. Enjoy views of tomorrow’s mountains, beckoning from every window.

Rabanal to Villafranca del Bierzo

Posada Plaza Mayor

+2246 ft / -4419 ft

Start the morning with a brisk climb up to the  Cruz de Ferro , the highest point on the Camino de Santiago. Legend has it that if you add a stone that you’ve brought from home, you may leave your burdens here and prepare for rebirth on the remainder of your journey. Didn’t bring a stone from home? It’s okay to bring one from a little closer. Traverse the ridge line on the way to a stop at the colorful Refugio in Manjarin . Welcomed by a bunch of friendly dogs and cats, stop for a photo, and some refreshments. Enjoy the 20 kilometer downhill to lunch in  Molinseca . Visit one of the best-preserved Templar castles in the world in Ponferrada  before rolling through cherry orchards into  Villafranca de Bierzo .

Villafranca to Sarria

Hotel Alfonso IX

+4768 ft / -5005 ft

Ride the most mountainous day of the journey today. Begin with a mellow hour of cruising through a deeply-cut valley leading towards the pass. Settle in for the long steady climb up to Cebriero. What a feeling of accomplishment – and a healthy need for a hearty lunch! The three-course lunch at the top of the mountains will do the job nicely, thank you. Roll through the hills after lunch, past the Albergue in Triacastela, welcoming cyclists with a bicycle hanging on an exterior wall. Continue riding the path as it slices right through farms – with chickens running everywhere – on the way to the transportation hub of Sarria. Feeling brave?  A Fred Flintstone steak can be yours for dinner! Tonight’s restaurant specializes in char-grilling very ample portions to perfection.

Sarria to Melide

+4126 ft / -4105 ft

Deep in the heart of Galicia, the hills are a mixture of forests and centuries-old family farms separated by stacked rock fences. The scent of eucalyptus fills the air; its bark and leaves blanket the trail. Portomarin, our lunch town, sits on top of a hill next to a former lake that is now a lush valley. Stay tonight in Melide, just a short 52 kilometers from tomorrow’s destination, the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Melide to Santiago de Compostela. A certificate, a final celebration! Buen Camino!

Costa Vella

2,964 ft / -3,572 ft

You’re almost there! The feeling of enthusiasm is palpable. Cross several small stone bridges over tiny streams on today’s journey. Eucalyptus forest thickens, shading the trail as you near the final hill up to the airport. The last few miles seem endless – then suddenly you arrive at the John Paul II Monument at Monte do Gozo. This signals the first glimpse of the city. Get your final stamp here, then coast downhill into Santiago. The square in front of the cathedral is alive with activity. Your fellow pilgrims arriving there congratulate each other and take photos. Set your bike down for a bit. Take time to explore the cathedral – final stop on your journey – while the guides head to the Compostela Office to get your certificate for completing the Camino de Santiago. Our farewell dinner will be filled with toasts and tales of The Way. Buen Camino, Amigos! Tonight’s lodging at Costa Vella is included.

Sleep in, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then head to the airport anytime you wish.

Our holiday was fabulous. We had some problems with the bikes which you may already know. The lodging you arranged for us was fantastic.

You really lived up to your name “Away from the Crowds” and we really liked that aspect of the adventure.

I want to particularly make you aware of 2 ladies at Avenida Hotel in Santiago who were especially helpful to us as we were arranging transportation and activities. They were delightful and very gracious hosts and although I told them I would appreciate you making them aware of our great appreciation.

Raquel, I cannot express how much we enjoyed this holiday and how your company made this so easy for us. It was an unforgettable experience and I thank you on behalf of my family for making it happen.

Rex Craig, USA.

Our pleasure!

Jaime, AFTC.

I thought it would be challenging but never realised quite how incredibly beautiful and inspirational the towns and places that I passed through along the route was going to be.

The people I met along the way were varied, from groups to loners, like myself, but I never felt alone. The smiles, nods and greeting on the travel made you feel like you were part of a large family all heading towards the ultimate destination of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

Having had a taste of the Camino and all it offers I can honestly say, I will be back!!

Thank you Away from the Crowds, for enabling me to enjoy a wonderful journey.

Diane, (Perth, Western Australia)

We had a fantatsic experience with Away from the crowds and our 8-day walk on the Camino.

Communication was prompt, warm, caring, and the staff responded to our every need.

The luggage tranfers went flawlessly and all the hotels we were booked into met high standards of cleanliness and warm hospitality.

We are from California, knew little about Spain, and wanted a local company to guide us (while we still had lots of independence, and did our own thing). Away from the crowds was the perfect choice. We plan to think about cycling with them another year -

Spain was remarkably beautiful, easy to travel in, gentle on the senses, safe, and very welcoming (despite our very poor Spanish langugae abilities). It was also less expensive than other parts of Europe - while offering magnificent scenery and delicious food. The local produce was better than you can get in California in our view.

The walk on the Camino was an experience we will always treasure - and we would want to let others who may think about it know that one needs to be prepared for walking with many many people on the trail, quiet a few bicycles, and even groups on horseback. For us, we were surprised about (though I think we were told of the popularity of the walk), as we imagined the walk would offer us an environment more supportive of contemplation and reflection. There was a great deal of stimulation and it was not as conducive to those aspects of our desired time away. This does not reflect at all on our stellar reviews of this company, the staff at Away from the crowds, and the company's fine mission. You guys are the best!! 🌠🌠

Thank you for everything,

Jann & Ewald, USA

As promised, I said I would give you feedback on the bikes, and I have also provided more general feedback on the trip.

The feedback on the bikes is quite simple. They were really high-quality bikes and I think they are just the right mix of comfort and performance that is needed on a trip like this. They were well set-up, I assume by the bike shop and the gearing set-up was very smooth with no issues at all.

I can only guess that the problem I had on my bike was a freak manufacturing issue, as it happened on a relatively flat road with no surface issues. The way you were able to resolve the issue was above and beyond what a customer can expect and I was very grateful for this.

More generally, the route was great, and I have to say that the hotels were exceptional. I don’t know how you find these places, but we loved every one of them. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but the combination of fantastic room, friendliness of the family and a memorable dinner just edges the Rectoral de Goian for me. However, the Astorga Hotel room (sorry suite) was incredible and could have housed out whole family! I loved the food at O Pino and restoration of the Parada das Bestas building was really impressive. This is not a criticism of any others, it’s just that these things stood out for me.

The problem with the supplied room in Leon did not cause us any problems at all. The receptionist was very apologetic and made a real point on ensuring that we knew that it was the fault of the hotel. Mistakes happen, and it didn’t detract from a nice stay.

We loved the route, and you described perfectly the dramatic landscape change that we witnessed when moving from Castilla Y Leon to Asturias. The hotel in Santiago was pefectly located for exploring the City. We actually took the train to A Coruna on our extra day so that we could see the city. That was a great addition to our trip.

As is usual now, we had a great trip and thanks for putting together an interesting route, as well as finding these exceptional hotels.

Regards Ged Bell, Scotland

Camino de Santiago by E-bike

Select date:.

Are you familiar with the Camino de Santiago , but would you rather cycle than walk? This e-bike trip offers you the chance to experience the Camino de Santiago by E-bike, spanning 324 km of the pilgrim’s journey in 6 days.

Out of the various ‘Caminos’, the Camino Primitivo is the oldest. The first person to traverse this path was King Alfonso II of Asturias in the early 9th century, following the revelation of Apostle James’ tomb. Much of the present route closely traces this historical trail. During your trip, you join the footsteps of countless pilgrims before you.

An outline of your ´Camino de Santiago by E-bike´ trip

You start your journey in Oviedo , the capital of Asturias. Along the first stage of the Camino Primitivo you discover picturesque Asturian villages such as Cornellana and Salas. In addition, on your way to Santiago you discover the breathtaking nature of Northern Spain while pedalling.

The second day is the most challenging one due to its steep ascents. Hence, it is important to use and manage the e-bike battery efficiently! You pass by the villages of La Espina and Tineo, where you can taste their regional specialties . You finish the day in Pola de Allande.

The route on the third day , reaching Fonsagrada in Galicia, is challenging because of its mountain passes .

The fourth day offers a captivating landscape in the kilometers toured from Fonsagrada to Lugo.

The fifth stage , starting in Lugo, is a great opportunity to relish the path and villages along the way, and enjoy the Galician gastronomy for lunch.

On the sixth day , your Camino Primitivo has come to an end. You will certainly get a feeling of achievement when riding through the streets of Santiago de Compostela , until you finally reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and Obradoiro Square.

Trip Highlights:

  • Asturian countryside with its picturesque villages such as Salas and Tineo
  • Mountain passes with breathtaking views
  • Asturian and Galician Cuisine
  • Santiago de Compostella

Ready to explore the Camino de Santiago by E-bike with us? Fill in the inquiry form below and we will get in touch with you!

Your journey commences in the heart of Asturias, Oviedo . This first stage is a good warming up as it leads through a few mild ascents and descents. It´s the perfect way to get to know your e-bike and its features, which helps you a lot in the coming days! After passing the village of Cornellana , the path leads along the river towards the first stop of your Camino, the Medieval town Salas . Here, you spend the night in a 3* hotel.

The second day is the most challenging of all, making it crucial to manage the battery of your e-bike efficiently. You pass through the towns of La Espina and Tineo and tackle the final significant ascent of the day, Lavadoira, at 806 m altitude. Once you conquer the peak, a 3 km descent awaits, finishing the day in Pola de Allande.

On your third stage, you depart from Pola de Allande. You head towards the Palo Pass . From the village of Lago starts a challenging trail to the pass. In the last part of this stage, between Grandas and Fonsagrada, you encounter the ascent to Acebo Pass (1026 m).

You are halfway through the Camino Primitivo! This stage offers a captivating landscape, making it a relaxed journey , despite Altos de Hospital (1203m) and Fontaneira (900m) ascents.

On the second-last day, you cycle from Lugo to Melide . You will notice that this part of the journey is much more flat and that Santiago de Compostela is coming closer!

On the last day, you set forth to pedal towards Arzúa . Here, various Caminos converge , so from this point, the volume of pilgrims increases! The highest point of this stage is Mount Gozo (380 m). Exclusive Guide

Similar rides and walks.

Starting in Leon, cycle to the end of the trail at the legendary city of Santiago de Compostela, around 330km of cycling. This section suits cyclists who are in reasonably good shape as there are several hills to be tackled as the route climbs into the beautiful green countryside of Galicia. The trail is full of variety with sections on sealed road, track, rocky paths and everything from long flat days to long climbs and short sharp ascents. In most cases it is possible to get off the trail and use roads that run parallel to the Camino.

You’ll have a high quality mountain bike delivered to your hotel along with panniers, tool kit, lock, small handlebar bag and pump – everything you need to get you on the road. Each day your main luggage will be transferred to the next hotel so you can keep your weight in the bike light and just take what you need for the day. Each evening you’ll come into excellent accommodation, hand picked for its character and location.

The e-bike allows you to take on the many hills and climbs of the Camino much more easily than with a regular bike whilst having the full experience. It’s a great option for people who may be less certain of their fitness levels and abilities to ride long distances.

For everything you need to know, see our Camino FAQs plus our Complete guided to cycling the Camino.

Get Ready For

  • Start your trip to historic and lively Leon, enjoy its many attractions
  • Tackle the climbs to the iconic Cruz de Ferro and O’Cebreiro
  • Visit Roman ruins and the Museo del Chocolate in Astorga
  • Ride through Villages and Towns of verdant Galicia
  • Finish your pilgrimage riding into the vibrant city of Santiago de Compostela

Leon to Santiago

Arrive into the lively city of Leon, capital of Castile and Leon. Your bike will be waiting for you when you arrive at your hotel. You just need to assemble the handlebars and pedals from the box – an easy 10-minute job.

Spend the day exploring this beautiful city and its incredible Gothic cathedral which is renowned for its marvellous stained-glass windows. The streets of Leon come alive in the evenings when people parade the streets and its bodegas are overflowing with people.

There are two routes available for this morning. Both start at ‘La Virgen Del Camino’ and converge at ‘Hospital de Orbigo’ – one is a more indirect route that goes via Villar de Mazarife and has better scenery and less traffic, a more pleasant ride. The other route runs parallel to the autopista (highway) is less peaceful but quicker. You will see pilgrims on both routes but we’d recommend the quieter one via Villar de Mazarife. Stop for refreshments at the cafe overlooking the extraordinary bridge the ‘Puente de Orbigo’ – built on a Roman bridge this one dates from the 13th century and is one of the best preserved bridges in Spain.

You then ride the final 15km to reach the beautiful walled town of Astorga, with views of the mountains of Leon in the distance. On this last section you will cross over a few kilometres of quite rough tracks over rolling terrain before you reach the cross which overlooks Astorga. Look out for the small basic ‘Cantina’ at the top of the hill, a welcome refreshment stop before you reach the cross. Continue on to Astorga, which offers a number of attractions including a Cathedral by Gaudi and a delicious chocolate museum!

Leaving behind Astorga you cycle on pleasant paths across the plains with good views of the hills before you. Look out for the Cowboy Bar at El Ganso, a good place to stop for morning coffee. After El Ganso you start to climb to Rabinal del Camino and you’ll start to feel the incline which will steepen as you get further into the hills towards Foncebaddon – the infamous deserted village which is no longer deserted! The incline is always rideable however and there are plenty of switchbacks with great views back over the plains from where you’ve come. At the top of the hill is the Iron Cross, where pilgrims leave something whether a pebble they’ve carried or a bad habit or memorial to a loved one.

Today is a big day of hills, the Camino climbs into the city of Ponferrada past the castle of the Knights Templar, worth a quick coffee in the plaza to admire the hills you’ve just climbed over the day before. After Ponferrada continue on through gentle rolling hills and vineyards to reach the charming town of Villafranca del Bierzo, nestled in the hills that mark the border with Galicia. From here continue onwards and upwards to overnight at O Cebreiro which lies at the top of the mountains, a further 30km and 800m vertical ascent.

From O’ Cebreiro you have one or two more uphill stretches to conquer before an amazing long freewheeling descent of almost 20km to reach Triacastela. After Triacastela you continue along the river valley to Samos, home to an impressive monastery which dominates this little town. The monastery is now a museum and well worth a look. From here you will continue along the road to Sarria.

Today you’ll continue through the beautiful green Galician countryside to the modern town of Sarria, which is a major stop on the pilgrim trail – walking pilgrims can start here to cover the last 100km and earn their Compostela. Immediately after Sarria you will cross a series of low hills of up to 600m that will eventually lead you down to Portomarin, the route is along tree-lined paths and country roads so very pleasant riding. After Portomarin the Camino climbs again for 400m of ascent before finally rolling down the last 20km to Palas de Rei, a modern town.

Your final day on the bike as you approach the holy city of Santiago. Today’s ride is a fitting end to the Camino, as you pedal along rural roads through woodlands and pastures to Santiago, meandering along forgotten country roads through the beautiful Galician countryside. Rolling hills and green pastures predominate as you approach the final stretch to Santiago and feel the excitement building as you glimpse the towers of the Cathedral.

This morning you will need to take your bikes on a short ride back to the bike shop to drop-off, and you will then have the whole day to enjoy and explore historic Santiago with its many enticing tapas bars and restaurants. You can attend the midday pilgrims mass and look around the famous Cathedral of St James which forms the city’s heart and watch the steady stream of pilgrims arriving into the square as they finish their epic journey.

You are free to check out of your hotel any time before 10am. If you would like to explore Santiago further you are able to leave your bags with reception.

León is a beautiful city with an incredible Gothic cathedral, renowned for its marvellous stained-glass windows. In the evening the narrow streets and plazas come alive when locals flood the local bodegas, cafes and restaurants. León is surrounded by picturesque natural landscapes, such as the Picos de Europa mountain range and the green, hilly countryside of Castile and León.

Hospital de órbigo.

The small town of Hospital de Órbigo is famous for its remarkable medieval bridge, the Puente de Órbigo. This bridge, also known as the “Passo Honroso” (the Passage of Honor), was the site of a medieval jousting tournament where knights vied for the affection of a lady. The bridge and its history are significant for pilgrims on the Camino.

Astorga has a rich history dating back to Roman times and remnants of Roman walls and mosaics can still be seen in the town. The cathedral is a Gothic and Renaissance masterpiece and a must-visit. Astorga is also famous for the Episcopal Palace designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. This modernist building is a distinctive architectural gem and now houses the Gaudí Museum.

Rabanal del Camino

This village has a long history related to the Camino de Santiago. It was historically known for its hospitality to pilgrims and many pilgrims find it to be a spiritually significant place.

This picturesque village offers a charming atmosphere with its cobbled streets and a medieval bridge over the Meruelo River.

Villafranca del Bierzo

This charming town is nestled in the hills that mark the border into Galicia. Both Molinaseca or Villafranca del Bierzo are great places to consider an additional rest day.

The atmospheric hilltop hamlet of O’Cebreiro feels vaguely Irish. It’s known for its straw roof houses (pallozas) and is located on the Galicia border, about 150km from Santiago.

Triacastela

Triacastela is a charming village located in the province of Lugo. It is surrounded by beautiful Galician landscapes, including rolling green hills, lush forests, and serene rivers.

Sarria is a busy, modern town with plenty of shops, hotels, restaurants and bars. It is bustling with pilgrims – those who began their Camino hundreds of kilometres back as well as the large number that walk the final 100km to Santiago de Compostela to qualify for their Compostela.

Portomarin has been inhabited for thousands of years and its importance grew with the popularity of the Camino in the middle ages. At one time it had three orders of Knights: the Knights Templar, the Knights of St John and the Knights of Jerusalem, which may go some way to explaining the castle-like edifice of the 12th century Romanesque Igelsia San Nicolas church which still stands in the square at the centre of town.

Palas de Rei

This town was a favourite place of residence of the Galician nobility and the importance of the Jacobean pilgrimage in this village goes back to time immemorial.

This is the last large town before you reach Santiago. It has plenty of restaurants bars and cafes and a few ATMs. The 14th century Capilla de la Magdelena is the town’s main monument. Arzúa is most famous for its local cheese, Queixo, a smooth creamy cheese made from cow’s milk which most restaurants feature in some way and is definitely worth trying.

This small busy town has plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. It is the last stage of the Camino before entering Santiago de Compostela.

Santiago de Compostela

The wonderful and historic city of Santiago is the end of the Camino journey for most pilgrims. Praza do Obradoiro and the wonderful ancient Cathedral form the city’s heart. Attend the midday pilgrims mass and watch the steady stream of pilgrims arriving into the square as they finish their epic journey. There are many enticing tapas bars and restaurants in which to celebrate your journey.

YOUR QUESTIONS

E-bikes make it far easier to cycle long distances with assistance from electric motors. They are not electric motorbikes though and don’t have a throttle! i.e. you still have to pedal and put effort in but less so than with a regular bike. You can choose between different levels of assistance: you may want light assistance on a flat section, or none on a downward slope and the highest assistance going up steep hills. They are an excellent way to cycle long distances and multiple days without feeling physically drained or exhausted at the end of each day. Typically, they are a very enjoyable and easy ride for people used to riding a bike

In essence e-bikes make cycling accessible to a very broad range of people and have proven quite revolutionary in encouraging people to ride. HOWEVER, that does not mean you should attempt to ride the Camino if you are a non-cyclist. We strongly advise against this – the Camino is not the place to learn to ride a bike or an e-bike!

They are very suitable for people who are already cyclists and have basic confidence with riding a bike on and off road. Older cyclists appreciate the assistance offered by an e-bike and people who may not be confident in their ability to ride longer distances day after day – they an excellent choice Though you should be complacent, you still need to train and get your fitness up.

You will need to bring your own helmet ( or buy one there) for hygiene reasons and make sure you check your chosen travel insurance provider covers e-bikes.

E-bike batteries are classified with a battery wattage: for instance a 650W battery will have a much longer range than a 250W battery. Then how long that battery will carry you depends upon a few factors:

1) The terrain you are riding – steep uphills will use up your battery far faster than level terrain

2) The level of assistance you choose : ECO, TOUR, EMTB and TURBO – each uses progressively higher levels of assistance and therefore your battery life shortens. So riding in Turbo assist all the time will significantly reduce your range compared to ECO which gives a light level of assistance. It is easy to switch between modes with your handlebar controls.

3) The weight you carry – The bikes are capable of carrying a combined weight of bike, rider and luggage of up to 150kg. The bikes weigh around 22kg and if you are a heavier rider plus carrying more gear then you will use up the batter faster than a lighter rider also carrying less gear in their panniers.

Typically you will have no trouble making then battery last for each day’s Camino stage providing you are keeping an awareness and varying the level of assistance as required, it should be perfectly adequate. On the largest climbs like the Cruze De Ferro you may use up your battery to reach the summit but you can freewheel down the long descent without needing any battery assistance at all. You will need to recharge the battery after each day’s ride unless you have had it on minimal assistance and/or medium distances. The battery is certainly capable of doing 2 full days ride on moderate terrain and medium assistance.

Each e-bike comes with a power pack and cable which you just plug one end into a mains power point and the other into a socket on the bike. Typically it’s about 4 hours to get a full charge and your handlebar display tells you how much charge you have in the battery when riding it or when recharging it.

Hotels along the Camino are used to riders with e-bikes and so it should be easy enough to find a suitable charging point each night, they can advise you on where to charge and securely store the bike each evening.

1) The weight! Typically an e-bike will weigh around 22.5kg, so significantly heavier than a normal bike because of the motor and battery. This can be significant if you need to lift up the bike up stairs or other obstacle, unless you’re quite strong you will need assistance. If two or more of you are riding together then you just help each other, otherwise ask a passing walker for help. There are places where it makes more sense to jump on a nearby road than follow the trail if its over a particularly rough stretch of ground, you just have to be the judge of this at the time. Any short sections of downhill where you may not be confident to ride, just factor in that extra weight as you wheel it downhill. Generally speaking the bikes can handle rough terrain, its whether the rider can or should!

2) The Compostela certificate. At the time of writing if you arrive in Santiago having used an e-bike you are not eligible to receive a Compostela certificate.

3) Cyclists don’t enjoy the same level of camaraderie as walkers do as it’s easier to meet other people walking on the Camino.

Cycling The Camino de Santiago Self-Guided

Hybrid bike | self-guided | historic.

The Camino de Santiago, also known as “The way of St James”, is one of the World’s oldest pilgrimage routes. It is a way covered by thousands of pilgrims since the 9th century, when Saint James’ remains were rediscovered in the place known today as Santiago de Compostela by the hermit Pelagius.

There is more than “one” way (“camino”) to Santiago because over the centuries different ways were covered by pilgrims whose aim was to get to Saint James’ resting place. We follow the Portuguese Way. This also has some variations, such as: the Coastal Way, the Medieval Way, the Central Way and the Royal Way. We follow the Coastal Way with the Medieval Way, because it is the most scenic and beautiful of the Portuguese Ways.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago is a 7-day stunning tour from Vila do Conde (Porto region) through seaside Atlantic villages and sandy beaches until we get to the Spanish border. Then we continue along the Medieval Way, through ancient Roman roads, medieval towns, dense woods and centuries old pilgrims’ footpaths en route to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santiago de Compostela.

As the day comes to an end, relax at gorgeous and magnificent Castles, Palaces, Monasteries and Convents that were once inhabited by the clergy or the Queens and Kings and now are converted into exquisite lodgings.

To complete this adventure (for religious reasons or not) you should previously get the Pilgrim’s Credential (Portugal Bike Tours will get this for you in advance). A pilgrim must get at least two stamps per day; you collect the stamps along the way at the hotels, restaurants and churches.

When you get to Santiago you go to the Pilgrim’s Office and show your Credential with all the stamps to prove that you did cycle The Camino (minimum of 200km biking). You are then awarded the Compostela, a document with your name written in Latin that certifies that you completed the Camino!

To cycle The Camino de Santiago, you should use wider tires on your bicycle! We will ride sometimes on asphalt, other times on bike lanes, wood lanes along the beaches and some dirt roads, or even some single tracks and rough trails. Thicker tires have better grip and they will help you to get the necessary comfort and balance when you have to cross Roman bridges that are more than 2000 years old.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 3, Intermediate (more precisely, level 2.6, between 1~5). It is recommended for “bikers” and “cyclists”. It is supposed that you are in good shape.

There is a well-known sentence that helps us to understand what really is The Camino de Santiago and it says something like this: “It is the Way itself that changes our lives, not the goal”, i.e. it is by cycling The Camino and overcoming the daily difficulties that our inner self is changed, and not the fact that you get to Santiago de Compostela.

Cycling the Camino is giving a bit of yourself! …It is something different, …it is really an experience!

TESTIMONIALS

“Great outfitter for self-led tours: We used the wonderful people at Portugal Bike to ride the Camino route from Porto, Portugal to Santiago, Spain. They did an excellent job outfitting us with great equipment, advice, trail guidance, and hotels on our route. I highly recommend them and I expect I will use their excellent services again.”

William Helfand, 54 – Texas, United States

“My wife and I did the northern mountain bike trip to Santiago a couple of weeks ago. We had an AWESOME time. Here’s a quick rundown: 1) Jose and Cristina are really the perfect guides. Both very friendly and very professional. Very knowledgeable about Portuguese history, culture etc… And Jose is a hell of a cyclist, to boot! 2) Really cool hotels. Obviously, these vary depending on the trip, but we stayed in 3 historic “pousadas,” which were amazing. We also had one awesome new, modern hotel along the way. 3) Some wonderful food. With one exception, all the restaurants they selected were excellent. We had a lot of authentic, tasty Portuguese dishes. 4) Beautiful, challenging, rewarding biking. My wife and I are both in good shape, but neither of us is an experienced cyclist. Jose did a great job of encouraging us and helping us out without being condescending or unnecessarily demanding. We both felt exhilarated at the end of our 220+ km journey! All in all, this was a splurge for us, but one that we will absolutely remember for the rest of our lives! “

Spin – Denver CO, United States

“We did the tour Camino de Santiago de Compostela. This was an excellent adventure that took us along trails with an unimaginable history for those that come from tropical lands. The landscape is completely different from what we can see in Brazil. We were able to experience some of the situations described in the pilgrims’ reports. The pleasant company of the gods, the amazing discovery of the cultural “differences and similarities” between Brazil and Portugal, softened the weariness, the heat during the climbs and the rocks along the way. Everything was very well organized, first class equipment and car, very comfortable hotels; we enjoyed the ride, the food, the landscape and the historic monuments. We thank PortugalBike Team very much.”

Eduardo Preto, 57 – São Paulo, Brazil

“Cycling to Santiago de Compostela was a unique experience. These 2 Brazilian women that were not very well prepared for such a big adventure got to the end with a great satisfaction. The tour was very well organized, with gorgeous views, and wonderful food showing a very rich gastronomy. The guides were very thoughtful, nice and competent conveying a great feeling of safety. We highly recommend this tour and we plan to come back and do other tours with Portugal Bike tours.”

Lucia Miranda, 53 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Camino de Santiago needs no introduction—its pilgrimage has already made its way on most adventurers’ wishlists. And it’s no wonder, the millennium-old route is much more than just a trail. Apart from awe-inspiring nature, friendly locals, and historic places, it’s also a spiritual journey said to be life-changing for many. By joining a guided, 7-day cycling tour, you get to experience it with other pilgrims in your group, relish the occasionally challenging paths, stay at quality hotels, and enjoy Spanish food and wine. There’s always a support vehicle by your side carrying all your belongings, perfect for when you need a snack or a break to rest your legs. The official end of the journey is the famed Santiago de Compostela, where you’ll get an official confirmation of your pilgrimage! Exclusive e-bike only date: July 28, 2024

Once you land in Santiago de Compostela airport, you will be picked up and transferred to your first hotel (2-hour drive) in Ponferrada. Before heading out to dinner, you’ll go and pick up your Pilgrim passport with your guide and your team—it will be stamped and confirm your Camino completion. Enjoy the charming Ponferrada, visit the 12th-century Castillo de los Templarios castle, or stroll through the old part of town, where the city’s folks take their paseo (promenade) in the evening before settling on their terraces for some refreshments. Get some rest—cycling starts tomorrow!

Set off on an exciting journey with Santiago in the distant sight! Take a fun ride along the Rio Sil before heading out of Ponferrada through vast fields and vines and arriving at the village of Columbrianos. From here, take a picturesque route, meandering through more vineyards and villages, the views of the monumental Las Ancares mountains in the distance. Following a descent on a fast trail, you’ll find yourself entering the beautiful town of Villafranca del Bierzo, a wonderful spot for lunch. As you head towards Vega de Valcarce, the valley opens up into a beautiful glaciated valley of meadows and tiny hamlets and villages.

Ponferrada towards Vega de Valcarce

Today’s route might be one of the more challenging ones, but the rewards are immense. First you’ll cruise deeper into the Valcarce Valley passing Herrerias, a village whose iron and steel industry goes back to the Middle Ages. Climbing begins here, up to O’Cebriero, which is on a well-surfaced path with some steeper sections, taking you past El Bierzo. The panoramas and views will take your mind off climbing! Once you reach O’Cebreiro, get some rest and celebrate your achievement before beginning a 10-km (6-mile) descent to the valley. Follow the Rio Ouribio through a valley wedged in by mountains, until you take the last descent to the bottom of the valley, entering the village of Samos (home to the great monastery of Los Santos Julian y Basilica de Samos). On hot days the river at Samos is an ideal place for a refreshing dip!

Cycle deep into the mysterious Galicia, rich with legends and stories of Brujeria (witchcraft) and mythology. Pedal though tiny, granite hamlets and farmsteads, which allows you to savor the region’s beauty. Upon reaching Sarria, the only sizable place enroute, you’ll climb up to the hill town—in Galicia the Camino is well-surfaced for cycling so you’ll enjoy today’s journey! Passing Barbadelo (and its 12th-century Romanesque church), pick up a long Corredoira taking you past the half-way point, meaning that there’s 100 km (60 miles) left to go! You’ll reach Mogarde and notice that the Camino gets a bit busier, as 100 km is the minimum distance which pilgrims need to pass to get their passport. Today’s destination is Portomarin, sitting high on the right-hand bank of the river, where the most important monuments of the town were moved stone by stone.

Accommodation : Hotel in Portomarin Meals : Breakfast and lunch Cycling : 23 miles / 37 km Elevation : +581 m / +1,906 ft

Head out for your first obstacle of the day: the climb up and past Monte de San Antonio, to the villages of Gonzar and Castromaior. The cycling is incredible as you follow the pretty Torres stream through glades of oak and pine, over softly-undulating countryside that is typical of this part of Galicia. Following a 11-km (7-mile) stretch of lane, climb gently through the lush Sierra de Ligonde, passing many villages boasting plenty of refreshments. The trail continues through oak woods and eucalyptus plantations, bringing you to the first village in the La Coruna province, Cornixa, from where you’ll follow a well-restored ancient medieval trail. A short steady climb takes you to Melide, your base for the night.

Accommodation : Hotel in Sedor Meals : Breakfast and lunch Cycling : 30 miles / 49 km Elevation : +1,000 m / +3,280 ft

Cyclers on the Camino

The grand finale! A steady climb takes you to the artisan’s town of Arzua, where, according to legend, a local woman who denied a tired, hungry pilgrim a piece of bread had her bread turned to stone! With sharing in mind, you’ll stop in Santa Irene for some rest and lunch, refueling for the final pedal to Santiago. After riding through Lavacolla, take on the last climb of the Camino as you head up on paved roads and along to Monte del Gozo (Mount Joy), which is where the long-awaited Santiago comes into view for the first time! It’s a downhill ride now all the way to Santiago de Compostela, a World Heritage Site. Reach Plaza de Obradoiro, Santiago’s impressive cathedral square, where you’ll celebrate the end of a truly memorable and life-changing ride with your team.

Cycling towards Santiago on the Camino

After a relaxing breakfast, it’s time to pack up and get transferred to Santiago de Compostela Airport (a 30-minute drive). If you’d like to stay longer, just ask your guides for some recommendations—Santiago de Compostela is a beautiful city to explore at your own pace! The cathedral is always a delight, especially the incense-bearing Botafumeiro. Other sights include Convento de San Paio de Antelares, which houses the Museo de Arte Sacro, the Plaza de la Azabachería, and Museo do Pobo Galego. The Hospital Real (now a luxury hotel) is worth a visit, or you can just relax at the world-famous plaza.

Meet your guides

Dan Hirst

We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday- it was a wonderful experience made more so by the great choice of guides that you have. We found the same last year with the two guides for the UK coast to coast trip. They were so helpful, when my battery failed on my own bike the guides could not have done more in terms of helping me find a new e bike so that I could continue my journey comfortably. Also, the lunches provided could not have been better and were prepared beautifully by the guides. Thank you so much for providing such a good service all round.

Excellent holiday and service provided from Skedaddle! Our tour leader Jeffery could not have been any better. Very experienced and just fantastic. The whole group bonded really well, and the guides booked us restaurants, so we were all able to eat together. Alex was fantastic too and they both were great at providing lunches during the day

Your two guides really made it for us. Stephen and Ramon were a good combination, excellent cooks and nothing was too much trouble for them. They were supportive throughout of the whole group, managing the differences in experience and mood really well. Bikes and tech support was faultless. Accommodation was generally good. Pazo Marinao in Pala de Rei was outstanding in every way.

The organization is excellent and Dan, our Tour Leader, arranged the perfect weather! Ramone, our guide, is a great fun guy and an excellent cook. He looked after us extremely well. The excellent accommodation makes a big difference after a day’s ride.

It’s difficult to differentiate the days to choose the favourite because Dan made sure everyday was not just a good day but a fantastic day. I can’t praise Dan enough for his all round support on the trip and for looking after each person as he did especially myself. He had a lot to juggle and made it all look effortless. We need more Dan’s in this world.

Dan was fantastic in every way. He was very organised and ensured everything ran smoothly. He took great care of everyone in the group whether at the front or the back and was very encouraging. A really great guy, always smiling and knowledgeable of Spain and the Camino. Picnic lunches excellent.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago requires great fitness and stamina. You’ll be cycling between 30 and 50 miles (48-80 km) per day, sometimes on long and steep climbs. Expect varying terrain, with some sections being uneven, unpaved, or on loose ground. This trip is ideal for those who cycle regularly, and it’s even better if you have experience of riding on uneven/unpaved terrain. If you’re joining this cycling tour, we expect you to be fit and healthy, ready to take on an achievable challenge!

The route follows the Camino Frances as closely as possible. You’ll be riding on different surfaces including back roads, forest tracks, and footpaths. There are occasional sections along the Camino that are loose and rocky, which you can either ride or hop onto the road for some faster riding.

The trail can get narrow and once in Galicia, you’ll encounter corredoiras , beautiful ancient cobbled lanes that can get a bit rough at times. Although most of the Camino is leisurely, there are still a few substantial climbs with frequent ups and downs along the way. There is an option of renting electric bikes, which is what we recommend to anyone who’d like a little boost up some of those hills!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Comfortable, season-appropriate riding or athletic clothing, preferably moisture wicking or synthetic material
  • Padded shorts
  • Peaked helmet
  • Sneakers or sport shoes
  • Breathable outside layer or jacket
  • Plenty of water, water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Daypack with snacks
  • Biking gloves are optional but recommended
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Group sizes and prices:

  • The group size for this guided tour along the Camino de Santiago is 14 people.
  • There are usually 3 guides per trip, two mountain bikers and one guide in the support vehicle.
  • At least 6 people have to sign up for the tour to run.
  • The cost does not decrease as the group grows.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago can be arranged for bigger groups. Contact us prior to booking.

Min. age requirements:

  • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • Children are occasionally able to go on trips with a legal guardian. That said, if you have a young rider strong enough to handle sustained climbs (either riding or walking their bike) of hundreds of feet, and rough terrain, then they may be able to participate on a case-by-case basis.
  • If your group has riders under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

To get to your cycling tour along the Camino, it’s best to fly into Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ) . Your guides will pick you up at the airport for the start of the tour and drop you off at the airport on the last day of the tour. This is included in the price, but if you’d like to arrive earlier than Day 1 and leave later than Day 7, you’ll have to arrange transportation by yourself.

We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more.

Travel insurance covers canceled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans.

We also expect you to respect local regulations and take measures to protect yourselves, your guides, and the communities you’re traveling to. For more information on travel recommendations and restrictions in Spain, please refer to Spain’s foreign travel advice .

If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!

Advice for bikegrims

Here are some tips to keep in mind if you want to be a bikegrim, rather than do it on foot. Before starting with them, there is one thing to keep in mind, doing the Camino de Santiago by bike has a great advantage and a big drawback.

The advantage of doing the Camino de Santiago by bike is that you will travel many more kilometres a day, so that you will need fewer days off to complete any pilgrim route. The flip side of this coin is that the speed of the bike and its own dynamics, provides fewer opportunities to meet other people.

It is important to train

To do the Camino de Santiago it is always recommended to train, but if you are going to do it by bike, it is necessary that you apply your training to it. In this article of our blog of the Camino de Santiago you will find some recommendations for your physical training to make the Camino de Santiago, both on foot and by bike.

Use a BTT to do the Camino de Santiago

Not every bike is valid to complete the Camino de Santiago. Do not forget that you will have to face mountain stages, so we advise you to use a BTT for the Camino de Santiago.

If you don’t have one, you should know that there are numerous companies that rent bikes to ride on the Camino de Santiago. We are among them.

One of the advantages of renting a BTT to do the Camino de Santiago is that they have insurance. Therefore, if the mountain bike suffers any breakdown, the agency will take care of replacing it with another one and you will not have to waste time waiting for it to be repaired.

Choose a time that’s not very rainy

Rain should not be an impediment to making the Camino de Santiago. In our article on the climate on the Camino de Santiago we tell you that it is very likely that in the stages that run through Galicia , you will have to face some stage with rain.

However, in the case of bikers, things change. For two wheels, rain is a great enemy, as the firm becomes much more unstable and is much easier to drift.

If you are not a cyclist with a lot of experience, but you want to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, we recommend that you choose a time with a low probability of rain. In that sense, the best months are June, July, August, and September. FromDecember to February it is when there is a higher volume of rainfall and therefore is the least recommended time for bikegrims.

Find another bikegrim

When you make a pilgrimage, in Santiago Ways we encourage you to do the Camino de Santiago alone. However, we advise you both when it comes to a bikegrim. This is mainly due to two reasons.

One is that on all the routes of the Camino de Santiago you will find numerous places to visit where you will not be able to enter with the bicycle. If you go alone, you will not be able to abandon it and therefore you will not be able to enjoy all its heritage. When you go with another bikegrim, you can take turns taking care of the bikes.

The other is that if you are going to travel many kilometres, you will inevitably have to deal with bicycle breakdowns . If you go with another bikegrim they will be able to share knowledge.

If you can’t find another bikegrim with which to make the Camino de Santiago, an alternative is to join one of the organized groups by bike . Contact us to find out if we have any departures planned in Santiago Ways.

Don’t trust yourself, plan your kit well

It is true that one of the advantages of doing the Camino de Santiago by bike is that the weight of your luggage is not supported by your body , but by the bike. However, keep in mind that the more weight you carry on the saddlebags, the more unstable the bike will be.

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago using a BTT you will not have so much difficulty in the sections of land. However, if you are not a very experienced cyclist, we recommend that you bring a light luggage or hire a baggage transfer service. Bikers also use it, especially in the stages with many slopes.

Choose a suitable route for yourself

This is the most important advice of all. If you want to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, but you are not used to a mountain bike or you do not have a BTT and do not want to rent one, choose a route that does not face mountain stages.

Although all the routes of the Camino de Santiago can be done by bike, not all are equally recommended. Some of them can be completed even by bikegrims without much experience on the two wheels, but to face the most difficult routes on the Camino de Santiago it is necessary to be used to the mountain bike and have a good BTT.

Stages on the Camino de Santiago by bicycle

In the next section we will tell you about the main routes of the Camino de Santiago and its cycling stages . Assess what type of bike you have to do the Camino de Santiago and what experience you have on two wheels, to choose the best route for yourself.

The Camino Frances to Santiago by bicycle

The Camino Frances is the most popular route and, therefore, it is where you will find the largest number of bikegrims. It is not the most difficult route, but it does have some stages through high mountains, such as the first stage that goes from Saint Pied de Port to Roncesvalles or the ascents to Foncebadón and O Cebreiro, not forgetting the ascent and descent on Monte del Perdón , which is also not easy for pilgrims on bicycle.

Therefore, if you plan to make this route along the Camino de Santiago complete, we recommend using a BTT so that you do not have problems in those stages. Another option is to complete the mountain stages on foot and hire a shuttle service for the bicycle.

Doing some stages on foot doesn’t make you any less a bikegrim. In fact, it is quite comforting to do a few kilometres on foot, after pedalling several stages on the Camino de Santiago.

Stages on the Camino Frances by bike

The Camino de Santiago Frances can be completed by bike in 14 days , attending to the difficulty of the tour and the sights. However, if you want to do the Camino Frances in less time, it is also possible.

In the stage distribution that we propose on the Camino Frances, to the bikegrims, there are several days that face less than 60 kilometres en route. If you feel fit, you can lengthen them thus reducing the number of stages along the route:

  • Saint Jean Pied de Port – Roncesvalles (24 km)
  • Roncesvalles – Pamplona (41 km)
  • Pamplona – Estella (46 km)
  • Estella – Logroño (48 km)
  • Logroño – Santo Domingo de la Calzada (50 km)
  • Santo Domingo de la Calzada – Burgos (70 km)
  • Burgos – Carrión de los Condes (84,4 km)
  • Carrión de los Condes – León (94,3 km)
  • León – Astorga (48,3 km)
  • Astorga – Ponferrada (52,6 km)
  • Ponferrada – O Cebreiro (52 km)
  • O Cebreiro – Portomarín (60,8 km)
  • Portomarín – Arzúa (53,3 km)
  • Arzúa – Santiago de Compostela (38,7)

The Camino Portugues by bike

Both routes along the Camino de Santiago which run through Portugal are the most recommended for cycling, especially if you are not an experienced cyclist. Both paths face few slopes and do not cross mountain stages.

Stages for bikegrims on the Camino Central Portugues

The Camino Portugues, following the central route, can be completed in 10 days by bike. Given the ease of the route, if you do not have 10 days to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, you can lengthen the stages, without much effort , to finish the tour in less time. The stage distribution to cycle this route on the Camino de Santiago Portugues is:

  • Lisboa – Santarém (90,3 km)
  • Santarém – Tomar (62,8 km)
  • Tomar – Coímbra (89 km)
  • Coímbra – Albergaria a Velha (65,8 km)
  • Albergaria a Velha – Oporto (62,9 km)
  • Oporto – Barcelos (59,7 km)
  • Barcelos – Rubiães (51,9 km)
  • Rubiães – Redondela (50,5 km)
  • Redondela – Caldas de Reis (42,2 km)
  • Caldas de Reis – Santiago de Compostela (43,8 km)

The Camino Portugues Coastal Route by bike: stages

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, the Portuguese route that runs along the coast can be completed in just 5 days. Or even less. The distribution of stages to make this route of the Camino de Santiago by bike, would be:

  • Oporto – Esposende (50,8 km)
  • Esposende – Baiona (86,9 km)
  • Baiona – Redondela (41,3 km)

La Vía de la Plata by bicycle

Considering that La Vía de la Plata is the longest route , cycling is a great idea. Still, it’s going to take you quite a few days to complete it. In this route, you will have to face stages of all kinds, since it crosses Spain from South to North, therefore the best way to do this route of the Camino de Santiago is to have a BTT.

Stages on La Via de la Plata

The Ruta de la Plata can be completed in 16 days by bike , from Seville. However, unlike the previous routes we have proposed, to complete the feat in that time it is necessary to consider quite long stages.

If you have good resistance, it’s a perfect route for you. However, if you have little time and are not very used to cycling, it is perhaps better to choose another route or start the tour from another point closer.

The stage distribution that we propose below arrives in Santiago de Compostela following the Camino Sanabres. Another option would be to continue to Astorga and join the Camino Frances from there:

  • Sevilla – Castilblanco de los Arroyos (39 km)
  • Castilblanco de los Arroyos – Monesterio (63 km)
  • Monesterio – Zafra (45 km)
  • Zafra – Mérida (65 km)
  • Mérida – Valdesalor (61 km)
  • Valdesalor – Cañaveral (55 km)
  • Cañaveral – Cáparra (57 km)
  • Cáparra – Fuenterroble de Salvatierra (60 km)
  • Fuenterroble de Salvatierra – Salamanca (51 km)
  • Salamanca – Zamora (66 km)
  • Zamora – Santa Croya de Tera (87 km)
  • Santa Croya de Tera – Puebla de Sanabria (67 km)
  • Puebla de Sanabria – A Gudiña (53 km)
  • A Gudiña – Xunqueira de Ambía (66 km)
  • Xunqueira de Ambía – Castro Dozón (64 km)
  • Castro Dozón – Santiago de Compostela (66 km)

Doing the Camino del Norte on BTT

The Camino del Norte is not one of the most recommended routes for bikegrims , unless you have enough experience. It is the second most difficult way and faces various mountain stages. That is why having a btt to make the Camino del Norte is essential.

Stages on the Camino de Santiago del Norte by bike

The Camino de Santiago del Norte can be completed in 15 days, if you are in good shape and have previously trained. In that case the distribution of stages by bicycle would be:

  • Irún – Zarautz (47,1 km)
  • Zarautz – Markina (46,3 km)
  • Markina – Bilbao (51,2 km)
  • Bilbao – Castro Urdiales (54 ,3 km)
  • Castro Urdiales – Santander (80,6 km)
  • Santander – Comillas (59 km)
  • Comillas – Ribadesella (83,6 km)
  • Ribadesella – Gijón (67,1 km)
  • Gijón – Muros de Nalón (48,6 km)
  • Muros de Nalón – Luarca (49,1 km)
  • Luarca – Ribadeo (51,8 km)
  • Ribadeo – Abadín (54,1 km)
  • Abadín – Baamonde (39 km)
  • Baamonde – Arzúa (62,6 km)
  • Arzúa – Santiago de Compostela (38,7 km)

Other routes on the Camino de Santiago to do on bike

In addition to the previous routes, there are other paths of the Camino de Santiago that you can do by bike . Some of them are:

El Camino de Santiago Primitivo en bici

It is one of the routes of the Camino de Santiago less recommended to do by bike, but it is not impossible. In this article we tell you about the challenges you will have to face, if you dare to do the stages of this route of the Camino de Santiago by bike. However, on the Camino Primitivo to Santiago having a BTT in good condition is essential , so as not to die in the attempt.

The Camino Ingles on bike

The Camino de Santiago Ingles is the pilgrim route that has fewer stages. By bike you can complete the stages of this Camino de Santiago in the blink of an eye.

However, you will not get the Compostela when you arrive in Santiago, since it does not meet the minimum 200 kilometres that you have to do to apply. You can find more about this route in the article we dedicate to the Camino Ingles on our blog.

The Camino de los Faros by bike

This route is not a proper Camino de Santiago , unless once you reach Cape Finisterre, and continue along the Camino de Santiago Finisterre in the opposite direction. In that case it is considered a Camino de Santiago and you can request the Compostela.

In this post of alternatives for doing the Camino de Santiago in reverse we give you more details about this route. Keep in mind that this route is also quite demanding , so if you plan to do the Camino de Santiago by bike following this route, it is also important to have a good BTT.

My husband and I are interested in the Camino Frances by bike. We want to complete in 2-3 weeks. We are older so may need to walk some of it. Also, we want to stay in nice hotels not hostels or be required to share a room. We want to go in September 2025. Thank you, Camille Sparksp

Hi Trying to find a way to hike the early scenic part of the Camino del Norte and bike some other sections that aren’t as rigorous. Please advise on what might be feasible.

Hi, Steven.

Hi, Giancarlo.

What is the best season to cycle the camino

We’re very glad about your interest in cycling the Camino de Santiago.

If you are not a cyclist with a lot of experience, but you want to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, we recommend that you choose a time with a low probability of rain. In that sense, the best months are June, July, August, and September. From December to February it is when there is a higher volume of rainfall and therefore is the least recommended time for bikegrims.

Please have in mind we’re always here to help you organizing any route of the Camino de Santiago once you decide when to start walking.

Best regards,

Had planned on doing the full 500 mile Camino before COVID-19 changed everything. Now would prefer to bike and hike. Is there a way to plan the best way for this option. Thank you for your support.

Hi, Wilbur.

We intend to do part of the Camino by bike, starting in Roncevalles on August 29 and finishing in Bilbao on September 3. Can you facilitate a bike rental for us for that period? – How will this work.

Your answer and advice is greatly appreciated.

Caminho De Santiago Portugal Bicicleta Capa2

Day 3 Stage Astorga – Molinaseca 46 km

The first climb during your Camino de Santiago by Ebike awaits you a few kilometres after Astorga. The landscape changes and today your bike through the green foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. Along the way, you will pass through several beautiful and charming towns, such as Castillo de los Polvazares . More than worth to have a coffee break. After passing Rabanal del Camino, the route climbs up to Mount Irago. At the top, the famous Cruz de Ferro awaits you. With a beautiful view. At Cruz de Ferro , many pilgrims have left behind a stone they brought back from home. As a symbol of their worries.

The Camino De  Santiago by Ebike continues through a wonderful natural with some villages. The views are breathtaking. After a long descent to the Bierzo valley, you arrive at your final destination Molinaseca. Molinaseca is a village full of cosy restaurants, visited by both pilgrims and locals who all want to admire the photogenic streets and nice cafes. Time to recover from today’s stage.

Day 4 Stage 3 Molinaseca – Vega de Valcarce 51 km

The Camino de Santiago by Ebike will bring you from Molinaseca to Vega de Valcarce today. The Camino Santiago takes you further through the mountain-surrounded valley of the Bierzo . After about 10 kilometres you will reach Ponferrada . A city within the centre a famous Templar castle from the 12th century (“Castillo de los Templarios”). Via a network of small rural roads, you bike through a field landscape that is intensively used for fruit and vegetable cultivation. Excellent wine is growing here. Thanks to the favourable micro-climate of the Bierzo.

The perfect place for lunch today is Villafranca del Bierzo . It is also known as the “other” or “small” Santiago. A beautiful village in the middle of the Bierzo with a church from the twelfth century. After Villafranca, you will have to climb again to the highest point of the Camino Frances: O’Cebreiro. Beautiful accommodation in the small mountain village of Vega de Valcarce is your final destination of the Camino de Santiago by Ebike for today. Here you can relax and prepare for the last tough climb that is on the program tomorrow.

Day 5 Stage 4 Vega de Valcarce – Sarria 47 km

This day of your Camino de Santiago by Ebike starts with the hardest part of your whole Camino de Santiago by Ebike. In the shade of poplars, birch, oak and chestnut trees you bike to O’Cebreiro. The highest point of the Camino Frances. The Celtic mountain village with houses of thick granite walls and low roofs seems to come straight from the strip of Astrix and Obelix. The climb is tough, but if you are lucky with the weather you will have an amazing view on a cloudless day.

After a coffee, the Camino de Santiago descends through the rolling green landscape. You leave the mountains behind and arrive in Galicia. This not only changes the landscape but most likely also the weather. This is due to the influence of the Atlantic ocean. After the long descent, you reach Triacastela. This means ‘three castles’. Unfortunately, there is no more castles left. To get to Sarria you have two options: you bike to the Benedictine monastery of Samo s. Founded in the 6th century and one of the oldest monasteries in the Western world. This route is slightly longer, but definitely worth it. The other route is shorter, making the faster in Sarria.

Sarria, an important stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela for centuries, is also the end of this stage . Sarria is a town of approximately 13,000 inhabitants and is the last place on which pilgrims on foot can start to travel the minimum distance of 100 km to receive the Certificate of the Camino. Many pilgrims start their pilgrimage here. And that means a lot of energy in the town!

Day 6 Stage 5 Sarria – Palas de Rei 47 km

The Camino de Santiago by Ebike brings you to Palas de Rei. Time to explore Galicia further. It is one of the most beautiful regions in Spain. Both in terms of nature and tradition. During your Camino with an Ebike, the pilgrimage route is perhaps the most beautiful today . The road flattens out, but is still hilly. Now that the end is near, optimism is increasingly gaining. The path runs along quiet country roads across the Galician countryside to Palas de Rei. You will be surrounded by the authentic Spanish countryside. The green fields, fertile orchards and simple buildings and stone hamlets.

Concha 1125X1500 1

Day 7 Stage 6 Palas de Rei – Santiago de Compostela 69 km

Today is the day on your Camino de Santiago by Ebike. You will arrive in Santiago de Compostela . The end of your pilgrimage, your Camino de Santiago by Ebike. But to get there we first have to bike a distance of 69 km. Now that the end of the Camino is almost there, the atmosphere is cheerful. Pilgrims feel relief and joy because they have almost reached their goal.

You pass the lovely village of Leboreiro. With its beautiful Romanesque church. And Melide. World-famous in Galicia for its ‘pulpo’ . Along the way you can enjoy the green landscapes full of grazing cows, stone walls and small Romanesque churches. Tall eucalyptus trees along the path provide shade. The Camino de Santiago crosses several small rivers and by a forest path, you reach the medieval village of Ribadiso . Via a quiet country road, you bike to Rua o Pino, traditionally the final resting place on the Camino Frances.

You will pass the Lavacolla River, where pilgrims in the past used to wash before entering the holy city of Santiago de Compostela . The pilgrimage route now climbs steeply to the top of Monte de Gozo , from where you can see for the first time the famous towers of Santiago de Compostela. Santiago with its world-famous cathedral , stately palaces and medieval streets is a worthy ending to this fantastic biking holiday.

Once in Santiago de Compostela, it is time for some traditional pilgrim rituals. Including the last stamp in your pilgrim’s passport and the collection of your Compostela. The indispensable proof of this great achievement! We recommend that you to visit the daily pilgrim mass in the cathedral. The cathedral is located in a historic city centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your Camino de Santiago by Ebike is finished…

Stage 3 Molinaseca - Vega de Valcarce 51 km

The camino with an Ebike will brinf you from Molinaseca to Vega de Valcarce today. The camino Santiago takes you further through the mountain-surrounded valley of the Bierzo. After about 10 kilometers you will reach Ponferrada. A city with in the center a famous Templar castle from the 12th century ("Castillo de los Templarios"). Via a network of small rural roads you bike through a field landscape that is intensively used for fruit and vegetable cultivation. Excellent wine is growing here. Thanks to the favorable micro-climate of the Bierzo. The perfect place for lunch today is Villafranca del Bierzo. It is also known as the "other" or "small" Santiago. A beautiful village in the middle of the Bierzo with a church from the twelfth century. After Villafranca you will have to climb again to the highest point of the camino Frances: O'Cebreiro. A beautiful accommodation in the small mountain village of Vega de Valcarce is your final destination for today. Here you can relax and prepare for the last tough climb that is on the program tomorrow.

Stage 4 Vega de Valcarce - Sarria 47 km

Stage 4 Vega de Valcarce - Sarria 47 km

This day starts with the hardest part of your whole Camino de Santiago by Ebike. This not only changes the landscape, but most likely also the weather. This is due to the influence of the Atlantic ocean. After the long descent you reach Triacastela. This means 'three castles'. Unfortunately, there is no more of the castles left. To get to Sarria you have two options: you bike to the Benedictine monastery of Samos. Founded in the 6th century and one of the oldest monasteries in the Western world. This route is slightly longer, but definitly worth it. The other route is shorter, making the faster in Sarria.

Stage 5 Sarria - Palas de Rei 47 km

Stage 5 Sarria - Palas de Rei 47 km

The camino de Santiago by ebike brings you to Palas de Rei. Time to explore Galicia further. It is one of the most beautiful regions in Spain. Both in terms of nature and tradition. During your camino with an Ebike, the pilgrimage route is perhaps the most beautiful today. Today you will bike past small typical Galician villages and shady chestnut forests. You follow a network of quiet rural roads to the village of Barbedelo, where you can admire the beautiful Romanesque church. You reach Portomarin via the bridge over the Rio Minho. With the impressive Romanesque Templar church. You will eventually arrive at your final destination over country roads and forest paths through the rolling countryside. Palas de Rei. A town along the Camino Santiago with many faces. A modern city planning with historical buildings, for example.

Stage 6 Palas de Rei - Santiago de Compostela 69 km

Stage 6 Palas de Rei - Santiago de Compostela 69 km

Today is the day on your camino de Santiago by Ebike. You will arrive in Santiago de Compostela. And Melide. World famous in Galicia for its 'pulpo'. Along the way you can enjoy the green landscapes full of grazing cows, stone walls and small Romanesque churches. Tall eucalyptus trees along the path provide shade. The Camino de Santiago crosses several small rivers and by a forest path you reach the medieval village of Ribadiso. Via a quiet country road you bike to Rua o Pino, traditionally the final resting place on the Camino Frances. You will pass the Lavacolla River, where pilgrims in the past used to wash before entering the holy city of Santiago de Compostela. The pilgrimage route now climbs steeply to the top of Monte de Gozo, from where you can see for the first time the famous towers of Santiago de Compostela. Santiago with its world-famous cathedral, stately palaces and medieval streets is a worthy ending to this fantastic biking holiday. Once in Santiago de Compostela it is time for some traditional pilgrim rituals. Including the last stamp in your pilgrim's passport and the collection of your Compostela. The indispensable proof of this great achievement! We recommend that you to visit the daily pilgrim mass in the cathedral. The cathedral is located in a historic city center that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 8 Return from Santiago de Compostela

You can enjoy the pilgrim town for a while before your journey to go home starts. Do you want to extend your camino de Santiago with an Ebike with an extra day in Santiago de Compostela, just let us know.

This route encompasses Portugal and Spain. The Portuguese Way to Santiago brings pilgrims together along coastal routes with breathtaking views.

ebike tours camino de santiago

The Portuguese Way gained relevance during the 12th century after the Portuguese independence. Our bike tour from Porto begins inland and makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

We ride along the coast through ancient Roman paths, such as Via XIX, built in 1st century AD, which linked the cities of Braga and Astorga through Ponte de Lima, Tui, Pontevedra, Santiago and Lugo.

  • Porto views from Gaia and the romanticism in the Duero river streams.
  • Pedaling from scenic Porto bridges to Santiago de Compostela
  • Making friends with fellow pilgrims who came from all around the world
  • Bike routes through wonderful paths going through centenarian forests.
  • Testing delicious food from Portugal and Galicia
  • The thousand-year-old ritual of congratulating yourself on your achievement in front of the Cathedral of Santiago

Day 1: Porto Accommodation: Hotel Eurostars das Artes

Our trip starts with our arrival in Porto, the second biggest and most populated city in Portugal, just after Lisbon. Its population its about 250,000 inhabitants within its urban center and 1,5 million in its metropolitan area.

Once settled in Porto, we will visit the Cathedral, the Tower “de los Clérigos”, Church do Carmo, Plaza de la Libertad and, of course, the popular Duero river with its several bridges. Don Luis I is the most famous bridge between all of them. We will be staying in Eurostars das Artes hotel, a four-star hotel which is surrounded by museums and iconic art galleries. Within walking distance, you can the Lello Bookshop, Crystal Palace, Soares dos Reis Museum, and concert halls like “Casa de la Música”, Rivoli Theather or Calos Alberto Theather.

Before dinner at a local restaurant we meet at the hotel’s lobby to brief about the tour.

Day 2: Porto – Ponte de Lima Route: 39.7km Elevation: +605m Accommodation: Paço Vitorino

After breakfast, we will be transferred to Barcelos by van. Barcelos is our cycling departure point, where we will pedal through the mainland route until reaching Ponte de Lima. Ponte de Lima is one of the prettiest and more charming towns in Portugal. This village is located south of Lima river and it has been the main crossing point since the Romans built a bridge in the year 1 b.C.

We will be staying at the beautiful hotel Paço Vitorino, a manor house dating back to the 16th century. The hotel is surrounded vineyards and lush forest. The hotel offers a pool and visits to their winery. We will enjoy a local dinner right at the hotel.

Day 3: Ponte de Lima – Viana do Castelo Route: 48.1 km Elevation: +577m Accommodation: Paço Vitorino

The third day of our trip we will complete a cycling tour from the hotel upstream to Ponte da Barca, a small village with a medieval bridge. We will continue through the other side of the river down to Lagoa, a natural reserve where we will finish the ride. Lunch in a local restaurant and a brief tour in the van is included.

In the afternoon, we will visit Viana do Castelo,an old port town. Dinner is not included, but we highly recommend trying the cod at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Viana do Castelo – Baiona Route: 36km Elevation: +523m Accommodation: Parador de Baiona

We will start our route by the coastline towards the border town of Caminha. In Caminha we will take a boat and cross into Spain. Once we reach Spain we ride through the Santa Tecla mountains and can even take a lift up to take in the beautiful views. Our hotel for the night, Parador of Bayona, is part of a fantastic, traditional Galician mansion and boasts impressive views of the sea. We will have dinner at the hotel overlooking the ocean.

Day 5: Baiona Accommodation: Parador de Baiona

Daytrip to Cies Islands National Park

The fifth day of the tour includes a trip to Cies Islands. In the morning we bike around Baiona to visit the main tourist attractions and afterwards we jump on a ferry to the Cies Islands, well known for its crystal clear waters and panoramic views. These islands, a refuge for pirates back in the day, are currently an uninhabited paradise. There are no cars, no hotels, and they restrict the number of visitors per day.

After having enjoyed the islands, we will have time to rest back in our hotel Parador de Baiona. Dinner is included.

Day 6: Santiago de Compostela Accommodation: Hostal Reyes Católicos

On the last day of our Portuguese Camino, we will have a transfer out of Baiona to Portonovo (a small town in Pontevedra province). Portonovo is a small coastal town located in the Rías Baixas wine region of Galicia. From Portonovo, we begin the route passing by Cambados, a fishermen village inhabited by Celts settlements in 5 and 6 AD. We will keep cycling through various wineries and eventually stop for a visit of the Rubianes Palace. A palace that dates back to 1411. After lunch, we will be transferred to the Parador de Santiago, where we will share our experiences and joy with fellow pilgrims in Plaza Obradoiro. We will enjoy our last group dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 7: Departure

Whether your plan is to return home or continue your travels in Europe, Santiago is a great stepping off point. Its small but new international airport is very well connected to Spanish destinations and to nearby European cities like London and Paris. Flights out are generally very well priced for those who plan in advance. Meanwhile, for those of us who do not choose to part ways in Santiago, after breakfast, we’ll bid farewell to our Camino adventure and return to Madrid by van (7 hours).

OPTIONAL: One extra day to the Galician coast. Finesterre was thought to be where the world ended when the sunset on the horizon over the Atlantic. It has remained significant over the centuries for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Surrounded by brilliant blue waters and an authentic fishing village, Finesterre and its lighthouse is the km 0 of Camino. It is a valuable reward to end your trip by including an extra night in the Parador Santiago. Ask for a price quote.
