The Best Missouri Scenic Rivers Float Trips

Cave Spring located between Akers Ferry and Pulltite Spring on the upper Current River.

What is the best overall single day float in the Missouri Scenic Rivers region?

Wow, this is a close one. If it were springtime or the water levels were high enough, then the far upper Jacks Fork 8-mile stretch from Buck Hollow (hwy 17) to Rymers would be a top contender due to its extreme rugged beauty and huge Jam Up Cave, but for a year round float I feel that the best (and most popular) single day float in the Missouri Scenic River region is the 10-mile upper Current River stretch from Akers Ferry to Pulltite Spring campground . This will average about 6 hours, but if you like to stop a lot and for longer periods to explore and enjoy the river (like me), then it can be turned into an 8 hour trip. You will average about 2 miles per hour + any stops. It has just about everything that you could want. See the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (Current River & Jacks Fork) zoomable map here . At the beginning you will get to see the car ferry at Akers which is the last 2 car ferry in the state of Missouri. This river stretch’s centerpiece is the famed Cave Spring …. a large 140 ft. deep spring cave which is a brilliant blue color that you can float into with your watercraft. This is located about 5 miles down on the left in your 10-mile journey. This stretch has a larger number of gravel bars for you to stop (or camp) on. More than on the next stretch from Pulltite to Round Spring. (Fact: The Eleven Point River has far fewer gravel bars than the Current River, especially above Turners Mill). This Akers Ferry to Pulltite stretch also has a nice a set of minor rapids which many call the “fun” section of rapids on the upper Current River. If you don’t like crowds, then avoid this stretch on Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend. The BEST days to float this stretch with the fewest floaters are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This stretch does not have any roads within any distance of the stretch of river that you can hear any vehicles, unlike the next stretch from Pulltite to Round Spring which as you get nearer the Round Spring bridge you can hear road traffic. If you would like to float this stretch then I would recommend that you call Current River Canoe Rental located at Pulltite campground . That way your vehicle is right there at the end of the trip near the river waiting for you. The store there opens at 8am and the first bus goes up to Akers about 8:30am, then about every hour or two afterwards through lunchtime.

What is the best float for tubing?

There are 3 stretches that I would recommend. The first is the 6 mile stretch from Alley Spring to Eminence on the Jacks Fork (Call Windy’s Canoe Rental ). The next is the 2.5 mile stretch from Welch Spring to Akers Ferry on the upper Current River (Call Aker’s Ferry Canoe Rental ). The last is the 1.5 mile stretch from Sinking Creek to the Round Spring bridge on the upper Current River (Call Carrs Canoe Rental ). These are short doable stretches since tubes only go about 1 to 1.5 mile per hour + any stops. Slower than a canoe or kayak which travels 2 to 2.5 miles per hour + stops. If you don't mind motor boats, then the lower Current River also has 2 stretches also that are popular for tubers. The 7 mile stretch from Waymeyer to Van Buren and the 4 mile stretch from Van Buren to Big Spring.

What is the best overnight float trip?

There are 3, one for each scenic river. My personal favorite is the 18-mile Cedar Grove to Pulltite Spring campground stretch (Call Current River Canoe Renta l). Not only do you get to see Cave Spring , but also Welch Spring and its old hospital ruins . On the Eleven Point River the 20 mile stretch from Greer Spring to Riverton is nice and the crowds are less than the Current River or Jacks Fork (Call Hufstedlers Canoe Rental ). Keep in mind though that the Eleven Point River has far fewer gravel bars at the other 2 scenic rivers (especially above Turners Mill), but that is negated by its beauty and plethora of sites to see (Turner Mill, springs like at Boze Mill and some awesome rapids to name a few). There are float camps to stay at though on the Eleven Point River for overnighters. Some even do this 20-mile stretch in a day. If you put in early enough in the summer, then it can be done in 8-10 hours. See the Eleven Point River map here . If it were the spring-time when the water levels are higher, then I would recommend the far upper Jacks Fork 18 mile trip from Hwy 17 (Buck Hollow) to Bay Creek (Call Harveys Canoe Rental ).

What is the best extended day float trip?

The 44-mile Cedar Grove to Two Rivers or the 51-mile Baptist Access to Two Rivers is the absolute best extended day float. This spectacular 3-day trip has it all …. Caves, springs, rapids, historic sites and more! Contact Two Rivers Canoe Rental for this trip. The first 8 miles from Baptist to Cedar Grove is trophy trout territory and is low in the summer, but doable year-round. You may have to walk in a few places above Cedar Grove, but it is doable. You will have to portage your watercraft over the lower water bridge at Cedar Grove if you put in at Baptist Access vice putting in at Cedar Grove. Below Round Spring you may encounter an occasional motorboat due to the higher horsepower limit set there between May 1st and Sep. 15th, but that becomes much more prevalent below Two Rivers and the further down river you go toward Van Buren. Between Round Spring and Two Rivers you will not encounter that many floaters, which makes that 18 mile stretch even more awesome!

What IS THE MOST FLOATED SECTION OF the missouri scenic RIVERs?

In the summer months there are actually 3 sections that are equally the most floated (and busiest) sections of river in the Missouri Scenic Rivers region. On the Jacks Fork the Alley Spring to Eminence, MO 6-mile stretch is super busy, especially on Saturdays. The same goes for the 10 mile Akers Ferry to Pulltite Spring campground since everyone wants to see Cave Spring . And lastly, the 8 mile Cedar Grove to Akers Ferry on the upper Current River is highly travelled since many people want to see Welch Spring and the old hospital ruins . If you don't like crowds, then avoid these 3 sections on Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. I personally only float these sections on weekdays for that reason. If you want to experience smaller crowds on a weekend but still experience amazing views and sites, then go to the lesser floated Eleven Point Missouri Scenic River and float any stretch between Greer Spring and Riverton (Call Hufstedlers Canoe Rental ).

What IS THE BEST RIVER AND SECTION IF I LIKE MOTOR BOATING?

The lower Current River is the best option if you like to run a motor boat. Below Big Spring johnboat Landing down to the park boundary and below through Doniphan there are no horsepower limits . Also, on the Eleven Point River below hwy 142 at the Narrows there are no horsepower limits. Many boaters also take advantage of the 40HP limit above Big Spring generally up to Two Rivers (where the Jacks Fork meets the Current River), but the 40HP limit extends further up river to Round Spring and up the Jacks Fork to Alley Spring. You will encounter an occasional motor boat on those sections, but they become much more prevalent BELOW Two Rivers due to regular floaters on the upper sections. So, if you are a regular floater (kayak, canoe, raft or tube) and would prefer to not encounter motor boats, then stay above Round Spring on the Current River or above hwy 142 (the Narrows) on the Eleven Point River where the HP limit is 25, or above Alley Spring on the Jacks Fork when the water is high enough to float it.

What is the best float trip for fishing for either trout or bass?

Overall the Eleven Point River has the better fishing of the 3 Missouri Scenic Rivers (especially between Greer Spring and Riverton), but the far upper Current River stretch from Baptist Access to Cedar Grove is the best stretch "on the Current River" to float and fish for either Rainbow or Brown Trout. This is a blue ribbon trophy trout section where hard lures are only allowed and the daily limit is 1 with an 18 inch minimum. These stretch is floatable year round, but in the dead of Summer you will drag in spots and there are a few sections that you may have to walk your watercraft through. Contact J adwin Canoe Rental for this section. For Bass the best section is the upper Jacks Fork above Alley Spring. However, above Alley Spring may be too low to float in the summer months. Contact Harveys Canoe Rental for any stretch above Alley Spring.

Which Missouri Scenic River has the best rapids?

The Eleven Point River has the best rapids of the three Missouri Scenic Rivers ( Mary Decker Chute and Halls Bay Shoal to name two) . The upper Current River has a few nice rapid runs too. One of the most notable is l ocated between Akers Ferry and Pulltite Spring .

What is the best month to float the Missouri Scenic Rivers?

It is pretty much a tie between July and October. July for the hot summer month in the cold spring fed waters and October (mid to late) for the stunningly beautiful color changes in the fall.

What is the best day of the week to float between memorial day and labor day weekend?

It's a tie between Tuesday and Wednesday for the least amount of people on the rivers. On the flip side, Saturday's are the absolute worst day to float due to crowds.

Since the 11 pt. is the least travelled of the 3 Missouri Scenic Rivers, which is the best stretch?

The 20 mile stretch from Greer Spring to Riverton is the best stretch, but in my opinion it is too long for one day (but people do it). If you are doing just a 1 day float, then Turners Mill to Riverton (15 miles) would be the best long one day float, but put in early. If that is too long for you then do Whitten to Riverton (8 miles). You will miss Turners Mill , but will still see the Halls Bay Shoal rapids . If I were doing an overnighter, then I would do Greer to Riverton and camping below Turners Mill since there are more gravel bars/float camps than above Turners Mill. What to Expect on a Current River Float Trip

Snaking its way through rural southern Missouri, the Current River is one of the most beautiful rivers in the entire country. And as fate shall have it, another one is right next door, the Jacks Fork River. I haven’t been on every river in the United States necessarily, but I’ve visited every state and have never come across two more paddle-worthy waterways.

Together, they make up the first river system in America to be designated a national park, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. It only takes two seconds on the water to figure out why they wanted to preserve and protect them both.

The spring-fed water is so vodka clear that I don’t think the two guys we met on our most recent canoe trip are that crazy for saying they stuck their bottles in at one of the springs and drank it. I wouldn’t recommend it, but I totally get it!

Below, you’ll find all you need to know for your Current River float trip!

Two Rivers is the junction of the Jacks Fork and Current rivers.

What to Pack & Wear

The 184-mile river is the most spring-fed of all the Ozark rivers, so it remains a steady 58 to 63 degrees, making it a year-round destination. And the perfect getaway to escape Missouri’s suffocating summer heat.

Current River rafting rental places provide paddles, life jackets, and garbage bags. Here is what you should bring.

A Cooler – If you plan to be on the water all day, bring a big enough cooler for lots of water, snacks, other drinks, and food. This Inflatable Floating Cooler Raft is perfect if you plan on going down the river in a tube. Note: Alcohol is permitted but no glass containers or styrofoam coolers are allowed.
Bug Spray – It’s always a good idea to pack bug spray when enjoying the great outdoors.
Hat and/or Sunglasses
Water Shoes or Waterproof Hiking Sandals
GoPro (we love not worrying whether or not our phone is going to get wet) or Phone with Waterproof Case.
Dry Bag – This waterproof dry backpack is perfect for kayaking, camping, or floating.
Binoculars if you’re into bird watching.

Tips for Your Current River Float Trip

Floating Current River is one of the most popular activities in Missouri. Be prepared with the tips below, before floating down this spectacular river.

Check the Current River floating conditions (water levels and weather) the night before your scheduled trip.
If you want to miss the loud, drunk college kids, float during the week or in the off-season.
Ask the rental place about any areas you need to watch for due to high or low water. They usually have the inside scoop where people are tipping over if there’s a hotspot.
Do not leave anything expensive in your car. Lock it up either way.
See if you can leave your car keys with the rental place. Realizing you lost your car keys would be a horrible way to end the day.
Clarify where the pick-up or stopping point is. Find out if there are signs or prominent features in the river to look out for.
Apply and reapply sunscreen. It’s easy to forget how strong the sun is when swimming in that cold water!
Download the area (click here to read how to save maps on Google Maps ) with a few main points of interest saved in case you have any issues and to track how far you are throughout the day. There is limited cell service on the river.

Is the Current River Difficult to Paddle?

The Current River is considered a Class I rapid. The water is mostly gentle with a few Class II spots.

It’s important to note that the river can present some challenges though. One factor that can make the Current River difficult to paddle is its fast-moving currents.

The river has a steady flow rate, so paddlers must use their skills and experience to navigate the water safely. Inexperienced paddlers may find themselves struggling against the current, particularly when trying to maneuver around obstacles such as rocks or fallen trees.

The river can also be challenging due to its rapids and riffles. These areas are characterized by rough water and sudden drops, which require careful attention from paddlers in order to avoid capsizing or getting stuck on rocks. While experienced kayakers and canoeists may enjoy the thrill of navigating through these sections, beginners should exercise caution when attempting them.

In addition, weather conditions can play a major role in how difficult the Current River is to paddle. Heavy rainfall or high winds can create choppy waters and increased currents, making it more challenging for even experienced paddlers to stay upright.

Overall, whether or not the Current River is difficult to paddle depends on numerous factors. However, with proper preparation and experience, most individuals should have no trouble enjoying this scenic river by kayak or canoe.

Best Current River Float Trips

The Current River starts at Montauk State Park in Salem, Missouri, and runs for 184 miles.

There are many sections to consider so what part of the Current River is best to float?

Here’s the thing, the Current River is amazing from all sides and angles so you really can’t go wrong with any float trip. If you are only driving down to get out on the water and don’t have time to sightsee then I suggest canoeing or kayaking the upper section.

One of my favorite parts in this section is Akers Ferry to Pulltite . It’s a half-day float and halfway is Cave Spring.

It’s a unique spot because you can paddle about 150 feet inside the dark cave. You feel the temperature drop immediately when entering and it gets a little spooky as your eyes adjust.

But if you have time to make this a full-fledged getaway then I suggest the lower section so you can add additional sights in the area to your itinerary.

In that case, the Two Rivers to Blue Spring (8 miles) or Log Yard (16 miles), might be the Current River float trip for you.

Missouri float trips are one of the most popular things to do in the summer.

How long does it take to float the Current River?

Estimated Current River Float Times Float times can vary widely depending on water levels, what type of paddler you are, if you are tubing versus canoeing or kayaking, and how many stops and pictures you take. Upper Current: Baptist Camp to Cedar Grove: 8 miles, 3 – 5 hours Cedar Grove to Akers: 8.5 miles, 3 – 5 hours Pulltite to Round Spring: 9 miles, 4 – 5 hours Akers Ferry to Pulltite: 10 miles, 5 – 6 hours Akers Ferry to Round Spring: 20 miles, 6 – 8 hours Round Spring to Two Rivers: 21 miles, 6 – 8 hours Akers to Two Rivers: 40 miles, 14 – 16 hours Lower Current: Van Buren to Big Spring: 2 hours Two Rivers to Powder Mill: 3 hours Waymeyer to Van Buren: 3 hours Big Spring to Cataract: 4 hours Big Spring to Gooseneck: 6 hours Van Buren to Gooseneck: 8 hours Round Springs to Two Rivers (18 miles): 8-10 Hours Powder Mill to Van Buren: 10 hours Two Rivers to Big Spring: 14 hours

Can you tube the Current River? Yes, you can, and it’s a popular summer activity although tubing takes the longest time since you’re not paddling.

When is Current River open? The river is open year-round and free to access, but the best time to go is in the summer on a weekday.

There are many caves, springs, and pull-off sand and gravel bars to enjoy at any time of the year, but the water is so inviting that it’s nice to visit when you can also go for a swim.

Wildlife You Might See on the Current River

The Current River in Missouri is home to a diverse range of wildlife, with many species thriving in the area’s rich and varied habitats. From fish to mammals, reptiles to birds, the river supports an impressive array of creatures that call it their home.

One of the most iconic animals found on the Current River is undoubtedly the river otter. These playful creatures can often be seen swimming and playing in the water, using their webbed paws to paddle and dive beneath the surface. Otters are sensitive indicators of water quality, so their presence on the river is a good sign that it is healthy and thriving.

Another aquatic animal commonly found in the Current River is various types of fish such as smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, or channel catfish. The clear waters provide plenty of food for these species, which helps them thrive in large numbers. Anglers flock to this beautiful river every year for fishing trips that offer some great catches.

On land, visitors may encounter goats or white-tailed deer grazing along its banks or crossing through shallow areas during migration season. Wild turkey also frequent this area; they can be spotted pecking around on dry ground near trees or perching up high above riverside cliffsides.

Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of bald eagles soaring overhead while blue herons stand motionless waiting for prey at shallows’ edges. Owls come out at nightfall while woodpeckers drum sounds into surrounding trees during daylight hours.

Unfortunately, there is always a chance of snake sightings. Uh, no thanks!

But we’ve been on the river a few times over the years and have never seen one. The venomous Cottonmouths and copperheads are the ones to worry about, but I’d avoid any whether or not you think it will hurt you.

Luckily, the water is clear so you should be able to see them easily if they are wiggling around. Avoid low-hanging branches and always look where you step.

Don’t Miss These Other Noteworthy Attractions in the Area

If possible, stick around a few days to enjoy the Ozarks. There are so many other awesome things to see and do in the area. Here are a few to add to your itinerary!

Big Spring is one of the largest springs in the world with an average daily discharge of 276 million gallons. Stewart’s Landing is a cozy old west town with specialty shops that sell handmade jewelry, boots, crafts, and souvenirs.
Round Spring, named for its shape, is a 55-foot deep sinkhole that gushes 26,000,000 gallons of water a day.
Alley Spring Grist Mill Historic Site has an over 100-year-old red grist mill on-site that is not only picturesque but historic as well.
Current River State Park and Echo Bluffs State Park have a few hiking trails, lakes, and picnic sites.
Blue Spring is another gorgeous spring that has the most vivid blue color.
Rocky Falls is a cascading waterfall with a large pool of water to swim in at the base.

Float Missouri's Jacks Fork & Current Rivers

We would argue that some of the best floating in the Midwest is found on the Jacks Fork and Current rivers.

On their own, the Jacks Fork and Current Rivers are each destination-worthy, but their close proximity to each other means some of the best floating in the Midwest is found right here in the Ozarks. Designated the Ozarks National Scenic Riverways, the Jacks Fork, Current River and the surrounding 80,000 acres of land have been preserved by the National Parks Service since 1962. The area sees hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and you could easily spend several weeks in the park and not run out of places to explore. But the biggest draw by far is the floating. Combined, the rivers flow for more than 220 miles, much of which is floatable. Both rivers are known for their crystal clear spring-fed water and wild and scenic landscape, but they each have their own distinct personality, which is why we highly recommend you float both of them during your trip.

There are so many wonderful stops along the Jack's Fork and Current Rivers.

The wider Current River makes for a smooth and lazy float in calm, meandering waters.

Part of what makes the Jacks Fork and Current rivers so special is that you can access two prime floating rivers from one location. The Jacks Fork is the main tributary of the Current River, and the rivers’ confluence is located in Eminence, Missouri, which has tons of camping and lodging options. If at all possible, try to plan your trip on a weekday. Both of these rivers are extremely popular and end up packed most weekends once school is out. Local outfitters have a cap on how many boats they’re allowed to put on the river a day, so be sure to reserve your boat ahead of time. Motorized boats frequent the Current, so if you’re going on the weekend, we recommend saving it for Sunday.

Even though the two rivers are so close to each other, the experience of floating them is very different. The Jacks Fork is swift and narrow at times and has several sharp turns. There are a few spots where, if you’re not careful, you could easily tip over. On the other hand, the Current is much wider with a slower moving current. The Current is also frequented by motorized boats, so it’s best to float above Big Spring in order to avoid congestion (and noise).

There are a plethora of floating options in the Ozarks National Scenic Riverways, so you can tailor your trip to your preferred length and difficulty. On the Jacks Fork, we like the 15-mile stretch from Alley Spring to Two Rivers. As for the Current, check out the 11-mile float from Williams Landing to Two Rivers. There are also a variety of outfitters, but we’re partial to the folks at Windy’s Canoe Rental . Not only are they some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, but the owners Mike and Holly Smith are like living encyclopedias of local knowledge, especially Holly, who is a history buff. She can tell just about anything you’d want to know about the area. When we visited, they even arranged for us to find the infamous wild horses of Shannon County, something that had been on our Ozarks bucket list for years. However, our favorite thing about Windy’s is that they’ll pick you up and drop you off wherever you’re staying. How can you beat service like that?

More About the Ozark National Scenic Riverways

The Jacks Fork (a tributary of the Current) and the Current River are free-flowing protected rivers that are popular destinations for floating and fishing. They are known as the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

Spring-fed river floats: Three stretches of the upper Current River make beautiful float trips, and two outfitters— Jadwin Canoe Rental and Carr’s Canoe Rental —can get you to them. (Outfitters for the Jacks Fork River can be found near Eminence.)

All three sections of the Current feature springs to visit. Between Cedar Grove and Akers Ferry, Welch Spring flows from a cave into a small deep blue pool that flows rapidly into the river. (The stop also includes the ruins of Welch Hospital.) Between Akers Ferry and Pulltite Campground, paddle into Cave Spring, a large cavernous opening large enough for canoes where a spring rises directly into the river. And between Pulltite and Round Spring campgrounds, pull off to walk a short trail to see Pulltite Spring and an old cabin.

Float Trips on the Current River

The following time schedules are based on normal water level and normal floating procedure. You may take longer if you wish. Please help preserve the Current River’s scenic beauty by providing yourself with a means of disposing of your trash.

Lifejackets will be furnished for each person in the canoe, kayak or raft. Lifejackets should be worn at all times. Federal law requires all children 12 years old and under to wear a lifejacket .

Heavy rains cause Current River to breach the bottom level of the Landing by 16 inches, with the river registering as high as 29 feet

RESTAURANT EXPANSION

Tom and Della open The Blue Heron Restaurant, a 6,700 square foot addition on the north end that included additional lodge rooms and conference area

Winter 2000

LODGE EXPANSION

Fifteen additional lodge rooms were constructed on the south end of the existing building

EVENT CENTER EXPANSION

Construction of The River Center, a 5500 square foot, state of the art event center to host concerts, weddings, and conferences. An additional 15 lodge units added as well

HISTORIC FLOOD (1993, Hold my beer)

Records were shattered as several days of rain led to 37 foot of flood water on the Current River. The water submerged the first two floors causing extensive damage to the entire facility

September 2021

CATASTROPHIC FIRE

In the early morning of September 15th, a fire spread through the main building, destroying the entire facility in under 4 hours. The fire shut down Highway 60 for most of the night and many locals said they felt the heat from across the river

The Best Float Trips in Missouri Near St. Louis

1. big river.

The Big River is one of the best rivers for a float trip in Missouri and one of the best for a float trip near St. Louis.

If you are looking to also do some hiking or exploring during your trip, look no further than the Big River. The Big River flows right through the banks of Washington State Park, Twin River Park, Cedar Hill Park, and St. Francois State Park.

The Big River is one of the best float trips near St. Louis since it can be done as a day trip. The slow-moving waters also make it one of the best family-friendly float trips in Missouri.

Because there are only two outfitters that rent out floating equipment, Washington State Park & Cherokee Landing, this river is more on the quiet side (especially during the week) which makes a Big River float trip the quieter float trip Missouri has to offer.

Cherokee Landing has outstanding customer service and great prices on its float trip rental equipment. The staff is very accommodating and will help you if you have any questions.

Where To Camp: Washington State Park

Washington State Park is a great park for setting up a tent or bringing your camper to enjoy a weekend of camping. The campground itself is small, but the sites are spaced out and well-kept. You can also rent floating equipment from the concession store.

Where To Stay: Gorgeous Historical Farmhouse

This beautiful historic farmhouse is a great place to stay with your family or a group. It’s only minutes away from St. Francois State Park which has two places to launch kayaks or canoes from. This house can sleep 12 people comfortably and has two full kitchens! The house was built in 1832 but has recently been updated. Although, the owners still kept the historical charm alive in the update.

Best missouri float trips for clear water, 2. black river.

Distance from St. Louis: 2 hours Distance from Kansas City: 5 hours Distance from Springfield: 3 hours

The Black River is one of the best rivers for a float trip in Missouri. The Black River is known for its incredible Ozark scenery as well as being one of the best clear water float trips Missouri has to offer.

While enjoying your Black River float trip you will pass through sandstone bluffs and you may even have a chance to spot some wildlife on the banks of the river.

If you enjoy fishing, the upper parts of the Black River are known for some great bass fishing. The eastern part of this river also runs through Johnson Shut-Ins State Park.

You can’t reach Johnson Shut-Ins by boat or floating to it, but it’s a wonderful place to go swimming and can be a great way to add another adventure to your float trip weekend.

Best river for canoeing in missouri, 3. niangua river.

Of all the floating Missouri has to offer, the Niangua River is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for a beautiful Missouri river float.

Flowing just south of the Lake of the Ozarks and passing through Bennet Springs State Park, this river has a lot to offer when looking for Missouri rivers to float.

The Niangua River is known for having some of the best fishing in the state .

The Current River, in our opinion, is one of the best rivers to float in Missouri. The Current River is one of the spring-fed rivers in Missouri which makes it a bit colder than other rivers, but great for a hot summer day!

The Current River and Jacks Fork River are part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and were the first rivers to be protected by the National Parks system.

Of all the best places to float in Missouri, we definitely suggest checking out the Current River and the surrounding area for some gorgeous Ozark scenery.

The Current River runs through Montauk and Current River State Park which both offer some incredible scenery as you pass by on your float trip.

The Current River is a popular spot for people looking to do overnight Missouri river float trips. There are lots of options for primitive campgrounds managed by NPS along the banks of the Current River.

Where To Camp: Pulltite Campground

Pulltite Campground is managed by the National Parks Service and is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This Current River campground has flush toilets and a shower house but no hookups for RVs.

Pulltite is our first choice for a campground because it is located on a beautiful section of the river where some of the best Current River float trips are.

Lots of sites are also riverfront, which is floating in Missouri dream. If you’re looking for NPS campgrounds with hookups check out Alley Spring, Big Spring, and Round Spring.

Where To Rent: Carr’s Canoe Rental

Carrs Canoe Rental is an authorized rental service by the National Parks Service and you can rent canoes, kayaks, rafts, and tubes from them.

They are located at Round Spring Campground but will arrange with you to pick you up at the lodging or campground you are staying at. They can accommodate single-day float trips or even overnight float trips.

Where To Stay: Secluded Riverfront Cabin

Looking for Current River cabins to stay in? This cabin sits right on the Current River and is great for a family or friends looking to explore everything the Current River has to offer.

Put your canoes in right at the cabin or spend the day by the river fishing, swimming, and sitting by the fire ring right on the banks of the crystal clear river.

This cabin is a gorgeous home that sits upon a bluff overlooking the Current River. It has everything that you could need for having an awesome weekend with your friends or family.

5. jack’s fork river.

Distance from St. Louis: 3 hours Distance from Kansas City: 4 hours & 45 minutes Distance from Springfield: 2 hours & 20 minutes

The Jacks Fork River is a tributary of the Current River and is the second river run by the National Parks system in Missouri . Due to lack of access, it is described as one of the wildest and most scenic rivers in Missouri.

This area of Missouri is also home to two herds of wild horses. See if you can spot them on the banks of the river during your float trip.

The first 25 floatable miles of The Jacks Fork River is essentially a deep valley with jagged dramatic cliffs rising along both sides of the river.

This part of the river is for the more adventurous and experienced floaters as the waters are categorized as Class II. The rest of the river is considered a more relaxing float trip and is suitable for all levels.

The Jacks Fork River is another great place for camping and floating in Missouri as there are 3 backcountry campsites along the river and 4 primitive sites all managed by NPS.

If you’re looking to do an overnight float and camping trip, the Jacks Fork would be a great river to check out!

Circle B Campground sits right along the banks of a beautiful section of one of the best rivers in Missouri to float, the Jacks Fork River.

You will find everything you need for an awesome weekend camping and floating with your family and friends at this campground. Clean restrooms, shower houses, and shaded spots.

Where To Stay: Relaxing Ranch House In The Woods

This cute little ranch house is a great place to stay to be out in nature while also not being that far from town in case you forget anything.

The house is tastefully decorated, the bed is super comfy, and it’s only minutes away from one of the best Missouri float trip rivers.

Best party float trips in missouri, 6. meramec river.

Distance from St. Louis: 1 hour & 30 minutes Distance from Kansas City: 3 hours & 40 minutes Distance from Springfield: 2 hours & 15 minutes

The Meramec River is one of the longest free-flowing rivers in Missouri and many other popular rivers for float trips stem from this river.

The Meramac actually used to be known as one of the most polluted rivers in Missouri. Local and state governments have taken tremendous steps in cleaning up the river and now it is one of the most ecologically diverse rivers in Missouri!

Looking for the best tubing in Missouri? Floating the Meramec River on a tube is super popular between Maramec Springs Park and Meramec State Park.

This is where you will find all of the ‘river resorts’ in Missouri where people go for a party weekend or a fun-filled family rafting in Missouri trip.

You can continue to float past Meramec State Park but many people don’t enjoy it as much as the closer you get to St. Louis there are more houses and buildings along the river banks.

Over all, the Meramec is a great choice when looking for Missouri floating rivers as it’s so centrally located as well as has a ton of options of places to rent/camp.

Where To Rent/Camp: Ozark Outdoors Riverfront Resort

This large ‘resort’ is a great place to go if you want everything in one place. They have float trip rentals, Missouri canoe trips, rental cabins, a late-night campground, a family campground, a riverfront beach, an aerial park, a restaurant, and horseback riding.

What stands out to us is this is the place to go for tube float trips in Missouri. They have a “tube loop” that is 1.5 miles along the Meramec River that goes right along the campground. You can do this loop multiple times a day or just once- it’s up to you.

Meramec State Park

If you’re looking for more of a relaxing family getaway without all the party-goers, Meramec State Park has some beautiful campsites right along the river. You can also rent float trip equipment at the park for a reasonable price.

Where To Stay: Secluded Cabin In The Woods

This off-grid cabin is a great place for anyone looking to disconnect and spend some time in nature.

It is only a short drive to the river and only a 10-minute drive to Ozark Trail Trailhead, Onondaga Cave State Park, Ozark Outdoors, Huzzah Conservation Area, and the Mark Twain National Forest.

Perfect For Large Groups (22 People)

Looking for a house to stay at (on the river) with 22 of your friends or a group of families? Look no further!

Best float trip in missouri near kansas city, 7. elk river.

Distance from St. Louis: 5 hours Distance from Kansas City: 3 hours Distance from Springfield: 2 hours

Located in the southwest corner of Missouri, floating the Elk River is a favorite thing to do for people who live in the western part of Missouri.

This river has so much to offer in terms of the many different rental companies, resorts, and campgrounds along the river. The river also has a large bass population for those who like to fish. The starting off point for float trips on the Elk River is in the quaint town of Noel, Missouri. Floaters will love visiting this town as it’s all about the river here.

The Elk River has some of the best river rafting in Missouri as well as a great destination for Airbnbs and campgrounds situated right on the river . So if you’re looking for float trips in Missouri with cabins, the Elk River is high on the list!

We normally stop for a float trip on the Elk River when we’re on our way south with our camper. Noel Missouri is pretty close to the Arkansas border and there are also some really great float trips nearby on the Buffalo River that we love.

Shady Beach Campground is a great place to go with a group of friends to have an unforgettable weekend floating and camping. Their campground has riverfront campsites so you can enjoy hanging out by the river without going far from your site. Rent your float trip equipment right at the campground and enjoy being shuttled upriver so you can float straight back to your campsite. For those of you looking to fish, this is also a great spot to catch some small-mouth bass! Where To Stay: Luxurious Cabin Great For Groups

This luxurious cabin is designed to keep your comfort in mind and is beautifully decorated. It’s also located literally steps away from some of the best canoeing in Missouri.

You could even jump right off the back porch into the beautiful blue water! The porch area is great for watching floaters go by and enjoying a drink while watching the sunset.

Affordable Family Vacation Cabin

If you’re looking for more affordable Elk River cabins, this adorable cabin is right up your alley. It is secluded on 24 acres of property, making it a great choice if you’re looking for some solitude.

It even has a hot tub for relaxing in after a fun day out on the river and has some pretty awesome views of the river below!

Best float trips in missouri for fishing, 8. north fork river.

Distance from St. Louis: 3 hours Distance from Kansas City: 4 hours Distance from Springfield: 1 hour & 30 minutes

The North Fork River is a tributary of the White River and goes through the upper part of Mark Twain National Forest, all the way down into Arkansas.

The river is about a 3-hour drive away from St. Louis and is an excellent option for people looking to spend a day or weekend floating on one of the best rivers in Missouri.

The North Fork River is also voted as one of the top 100 rivers for trout fishing in the US and is one of the best rivers for canoe trips in Missouri.

Don’t forget to check out Blue Spring while floating down this river, the water bubbles from the ground creating a gorgeous turquoise color that looks like it’s straight out of a tropical destination.
