It took Paul Reiser decades to return to his first love — the comedy stage
By Dan Nailen
P aul Reiser was an omnipresent comedic force not too long ago. During the '80s, you'd see him doing stand-up on late-night talk shows or HBO between jobs adding comic relief to movies like Diner , Beverly Hills Cop and Aliens . During the '90s, he co-starred with Helen Hunt in Mad About You , a long-running NBC sitcom that kicked off evening lineups that included Friends and Seinfeld .
Mad About You 's success led Reiser to more movies and television, both as an actor and writer, and for most of the past two decades his Hollywood work kept him from his original passion — stand-up comedy. Before the pandemic, Reiser started doing some shows, and after a global pause, he's back hopping on stages to reconnect with audiences, including at Spokane Comedy Club this weekend.
We talked with Reiser about getting back in the game, his early years, and the loss of friend Bob Saget. Responses have been edited for length and clarity.
INLANDER : Why get back into doing stand-up in clubs?
REISER: My buddies, we started together; we just wanted to be comics. Stand-up, that was it. The TV and the movies were like an accidental surprise, a nice accident. That worked out well. But it was always my goal to get back. And I hadn't done it since Mad About You started. It ended up being a long time; I just didn't do it. But I had always been itching to do it.
And then, finally, I just ran out of excuses and sort of started from scratch. It took about a year really to get comfortable again, to get that muscle back. I was out right before the pandemic; it's been a year, almost two years, since I was out. And I said, let's go do some clubs, because there's something about the clubs that feels more at home. There's more interaction, you're looking at the people, they're right there.
That itch was always there — was it hard to actually get started doing jokes again?
Mad About You was kind of all-consuming, because you're writing it, you're getting ready for next season in between the seasons. So I knew I wasn't gonna do it until the time was right. But it was always my intention to get back.
In the beginning, I'd go on stage, and I had, you know, three minutes, five minutes of new stuff. And the audience is looking at me like, "Hey, you're the guy from TV? What are you doing here?" And I'm looking at them going, "I don't know what I'm doing here either." It took awhile to get comfortable again, but the thrill of it and the excitement of it was there. I tell people there's not a lot of things you could do at 60 that feel the same way you did when you were 20, but stand-up is one of those things.
Is there a noticeable difference between now and the old days, in the audience or the clubs?
In many ways, it's the same old, same old. There's always a pool of comics who want to get on. Audiences are maybe a little different and a little more savvy. They've watched the last 20 years of content and the last 20 years of news. It's a different world. You didn't have a cell phone joke, you didn't have an internet joke 25 years ago, so your references have changed, but the way you do it, it is the same. With stand-up, it's low tech, it's just you talking to people.
Was Bob Saget a peer of yours?
We were exactly on parallel paths, even to the point of having shows on the air at the same time, and then getting back into stand-up at the same time. I think he got back a little earlier.
I hadn't seen him for ages, and then just last summer, we had a couple of lunches together, a group of us. And it was impressive, I had just forgotten how funny he was. You don't see it coming. He doesn't look like he's trying for it. He just puts together a sentence that you go, "Well, that's absurdly funny." And as gentle as everybody has been saying, you know, he was just a gentle, sweet, really supportive, good guy."
I've always been as conscious of you as an actor as a stand-up. Were both things always intertwined for you?
I did some acting in college. But I think it's because I hadn't discovered stand-up yet. It's the performance bug. You want to get out there, and you want to get laughs. I wasn't itching to do Shakespeare. My idols weren't necessarily De Niro, Pacino or Brando. It was George Carlin and Robert Klein and Mel Brooks.
There were some people who said, "I just want to get noticed and do stand-up so that I can get a movie." But that wasn't us, we just really wanted to do stand-up. And so getting back to it was so refreshing. It feels like this rush of nostalgia, but also of newness, because it's like, "Wow, I remember going to the clubs when I was 20, when I was 19." And it feels like the same struggle. You're still looking at a joke on paper: "Why did that not work tonight? But it worked yesterday. Let me fix that." That's the fun part.
When you grow up in New York City, it just seems like the world is your oyster for entertainment.
You don't know enough to appreciate it when you're a kid; you don't realize that this isn't everywhere. But yeah, as a kid, I'd go with my parents to see Neil Simon comedies on Broadway. And going to see classical musicians at Carnegie Hall, going to hear blues bands in the Village, going to hear jazz. In high school I had a group of friends, and we'd go to Grand Funk Railroad and Led Zeppelin concerts at the [Madison Square] Garden. But the other group of friends would be going to the Bitter End, a club in the Village, and we'd see George Carlin and Robert Klein play for 112 people. I can vividly picture sitting in the back of the club and watching Robert Klein, and not really thinking, "How do I do that?" but it being sort of a ray of light like, "Wow, that's really fun." ♦

Paul Reiser Returns To Stand-Up Stages Across The U.S. This Fall
August 22, 2022— Paul Reiser, one of Comedy Central’s Top 100 Comedians of All Time, will hit the road this fall for stand-up dates across the U.S. The tour launches August 29 in Hilton Head, SC, with stops along the East Coast and in the Midwest through the fall. Despite a busy filming schedule, Reiser has returned to his “first love,” stand-up comedy, with open arms. " I always tell people this, there are very few things that you can do in your 60s that are close to how you did them when you were 19 ," he said in a recent Forbes interview, " ... and stand-up is one of the only ones really. ”
2022 marks another milestone year for the prolific actor, comedian, television writer, producer, author, and musician. His acting projects include the fourth season of Netflix’s mega-hit, Stranger Things ; the upcoming eight-episode Hulu comedy series Reboot ; and playing “The Legend” in season three of Amazon Prime’s The Boys . Reiser has also wrapped filming on The Problem with People , an original comedy feature he stars in, co-wrote and produced.
See below for an overview on Paul’s recent activity and 2022 plans:
- Stranger Things : Netflix’s biggest series of all time, features Reiser as Dr. Sam Owens in seasons two and four (with a cameo in season three). Series creators the Duffer Brothers cite Reiser’s role as the villainous Carter Burke in James Cameron’s 1986 classic Aliens as an inspiration for season two and Reiser’s unforgettable character.
- Reboot : Hulu’s upcoming eight-episode comedy series Reboot was created by Modern Family ’s Steve Levitan and premieres on September 20. Reiser plays opposite Keegan-Michael Key ( Key & Peele, Veep ), Johnny Knoxville (MTV’s Jackass, The Dukes of Hazzard ), and Judy Greer ( Arrested Development, Californication ) in this meta-story of fictional actors reuniting for a reboot of their career-defining sitcom.
- The Boys : Amazon Prime’s Emmy-nominated dark superhero series---based on the comic of the same name---features Reiser in the against-type role of The Legend, a sleazy power player past his prime (the outrageous character is a fan-favorite). Reiser found inspiration for the part in the spirit of late Hollywood movie mogul Robert Evans.
- The Problem with People : Reiser co-wrote and produced his recently-wrapped project, the original comedy feature The Problem with People. The story of two estranged cousins making amends for generations of family disputes and drama, it stars Reiser alongside Jane Levy ( Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Reiser’s Tonight Show- inspired series “There’s…Johnny!” ) and Colm Meaney ( Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Layer Cake ). Stay tuned for updates.
- A number of Reiser’s memorable recent roles and projects are currently available for streaming, including Reiser’s and Helen Hunt’s highly acclaimed revival of 90s comedy Mad About You--- as well as the original show’s seven-seasons (on Amazon Prime); his Emmy-nominated performance in Chuck Lorre’s comedy-drama The Kominsky Method (on Netflix), and the critically acclaimed series and love letter to the Tonight Show’s reign, There’s…Johnny!--- co-created and co-produced by Reiser (on Peacock).

ABOUT PAUL REISER:
Comedian, actor, television writer and author Paul Reiser is one of Hollywood’s most prolific creatives—and he shows no signs of slowing down. Reiser is starring in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Things as Dr. Sam Owens, in a role created by the Duffer Brothers specifically for Reiser, and Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method , for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and a SAG Award nomination for “Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series.” Reiser received rave reviews for the latter, where he delivered a moving soliloquy on life and loss in a scene that MediaPost says “will stand… as one of the finest moments seen anywhere on television.”
Hulu’s forthcoming eight-episode, sitcom-themed comedy series Reboot ---from Modern Family’s Steve Levitan--- stars Reiser opposite Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville and Judy Greer. The series premieres weekly episodes beginning on September 20.
Reiser recently took his first step into bloody superhero glory with season three of Amazon Prime’s Emmy-nominated The Boys , where he plays the comic-book role of The Legend. He just wrapped filming on The Problem with People, an original comedy feature Reiser co-wrote and produced, starring alongside Jane Levy and Colm Meaney.
The multi-faceted actor also revived one of his most iconic roles in the return of Mad About You , the long-running hit 90s comedy Reiser co-created and starred in with Helen Hunt. The Emmy, Peabody and Golden Globe-winning comedy ended in May 1999 and premiered 20 years later as a limited series on Spectrum Originals.
Reiser is a fixture behind the camera as well. He co-created and co-produced There’s Johnny!, a seven-episode series which originally streamed on Hulu and now streams on Peacock. The show, co-created with filmmaker David Steven Simon and co-produced with David Gordon Green in conjunction with The Carson Company, premiered to critical praise, with Decider saying There’s Johnny! is “a television experience unlike any I’ve seen on TV in recent years” and “unfolds like a dream, a memory fondly recalled.”

Paul Reiser
Birth Date: March 30, 1957
Age: 67 years old, birth place: new york, new york.
Veteran stand-up comedian and actor Paul Reiser is best known for his role as Paul Buchman on the long-running sitcom "Mad About You" (NBC, 1992-99). Born in New York City in 1957, Reiser enrolled at Binghamton University as a music major, but it was his performances with his dorm's community theater program Hinman Little Theater that allowed him to explore his skills as an actor. Simultaneously, Reiser began practicing stand-up comedy at various New York clubs during his summer breaks, eventually resulting in a combination of skills that made him an ideal candidate for a comedic film-a trait noticed by casting director Ellen Chenowith when he auditioned for Barry Levinson's ensemble comedy "Diner" (1982).
Reiser's charisma soon found him cast as detective Jeffrey Friedman in the action comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984), and even more famously as the slippery corporate executive Burke in the smash hit "Alien" (1979) sequel "Aliens" (1986). The following year, he moved to the realm of television, taking on the role of Michael on the sitcom "My Two Dads" (NBC, 1987-1990) in 1987. Reiser married future clinical psychologist Paula Ravets the following year. He would appear with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger in "The Marrying Man" (1991) shortly after the series wrapped in 1990, but by this time, Reiser was already planning his return to TV, writing, producing, and co-starring with Helen Hunt on the sitcom "Mad About You" starting in 1992.
The show's simple premise about the everyday misadventures of a pair of Manhattan newlyweds proved an excellent showcase for Reiser's comedic voice, and he found even more content along this theme with his first book, a collection of humorous essays on committed relationships titled Couplehood, published in 1995. He would later expand upon these themes to include discussions about parenting in 1998's Babyhood. Meanwhile, the consistently popular "Mad About You" finally ending its run in 1999. The new millennium brought a role in the sleeper hit "One Night at McCool's" (2001) before Reiser wrote, produced, and starred with the legendary Peter Falk in the comedy "The Thing About My Folks" (2005).
He would similarly write, produce, and star in the sitcom "The Paul Reiser Show" (NBC, 2011), though reportedly minimal promotion led to the show lasting just seven episodes. Undeterred, Reiser published another book, Familyhood, and took on the role of the thanklessly supportive father in the critically acclaimed "Whiplash" (2014). He would also become a regular face on comedy series like "Married" (FX, 2014-15) and "Red Oaks" (Amazon, 2014-17). After supporting turns in "Concussion" (2015) and "War on Everyone" (2016), Reiser began portraying government operative Sam Owens on the phenomenally popular series "Stranger Things" (Netflix, 2016-).
The part left many critics praising not only Reiser's performance, but the subtle nod many felt his character made to his iconic role in "Aliens." Reiser would go on to join the cast of the cult hit comedy series "The Kominsky Method" (Netflix, 2018-) in 2019.
