Nature Sightings

Get ready for an exhilarating adventure as you spot wild animals right along the river during your excursion! Make the most of your wildlife viewing experience by discovering fascinating facts about the creatures you might encounter along the way.

American Bald Eagle

American Bald Eagle

The bald eagle, a symbol of freedom and namesake of the Potomac Eagle, thrives in The Trough, a remote canyon in West Virginia. Accessible only by walking, boating, or the Potomac Eagle train, this sanctuary provides clean water and fish-rich rivers, creating an ideal habitat. Known for their size, bald eagles build nests on rugged canyon walls, visible from the train and reused each year.

Recovery: Once endangered by DDT, bald eagles made a significant recovery after its ban in the 1970s. Their return marked a milestone during Potomac Eagle’s first cruise in 1991. Today, Potomac Eagle is the only passenger train through The Trough, offering a unique chance to see these majestic birds in their natural setting. Bald eagles are a keystone species, vital to the canyon’s ecosystem.

Black Bear

American Black Bear

Spotting a black bear in the wild is an exhilarating experience for Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad passengers. These sightings, whether of solitary bears or mothers with cubs, add excitement to our excursions. Black bears, adaptable and resilient, are often seen crossing tracks or moving through dense forests along our route, thrilling passengers with their presence.

A thrilling sight is a mother bear with cubs, who stay with her for about a year and a half, learning survival skills. Adult black bears can weigh between 100 to 300 pounds, while cubs are smaller and more agile. These summer sightings highlight the rich wildlife and thriving ecosystems along our route. Join us on the Potomac Eagle to observe these creatures in their natural habitat.

Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron, with its striking appearance and graceful movements, is a captivating sight along the South Branch Potomac River. Often seen wading or perched on riverbanks, these elegant birds add serene beauty to the landscape for Potomac Eagle passengers. Skilled hunters, they primarily feed on fish, and their patience and precision are marvelous to observe.

As you journey through The Trough, watch the riverbanks for herons wading gracefully. Their wingspans, up to six feet, are stunning, especially in flight. Seeing a heron take off as the train approaches is a memorable experience, enhancing the scenic beauty. The presence of Great Blue Herons indicates a healthy ecosystem, enriching the Potomac Eagle journey.

White Tailed Deer

White-Tailed Deer

The white-tailed deer, a symbol of North America’s wildlife, is crucial to West Virginia’s natural heritage. Early 20th-century conservation efforts, including importing deer from Michigan, restored their population. Today, these deer thrive along the Potomac Eagle train route, often seen grazing, drinking from the South Branch Potomac River, or crossing the tracks.

These sightings underscore successful conservation efforts, enhancing the Potomac Eagle journey’s scenic experience. The presence of white-tailed deer connects passengers to the rich wildlife tapestry of the region. Encounters with these deer, whether a solitary buck or a doe in the woods, remind us of West Virginia’s natural beauty and vitality.

These Scenic Train Trips Through West Virginia Have Spectacular Mountain Views and Fine Dining on the Rails

West Virginia is a haven for scenic train rides — and one travel writer sampled the steam trains on offer to find the best trips.

Mark Orwoll, a former international editor of Travel + Leisure , has traveled to more than 70 countries and written about most of them. His byline has appeared more than 1,500 times in T+L . Now a freelance writer, he contributes travel articles to top-name outlets.

Mark Orwoll/Travel + Leisure

I’ve been looking forward to a glass of wine in an elegant train car. I’ve even brought along a bottle of wine in my knapsack, just in case you have to bring your own. Unfortunately, at the last minute, I discover that West Virginia's Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad serves no alcohol on its cocktail-hour excursion. Not even BYOB.

Departing from Romney , West Virginia’s oldest town, the Potomac Eagle gets its name from its route along the South Branch of the Potomac River and the abundance of eagles there. That’s especially true in the high-walled, thickly forested canyon called the Trough, so named by George Washington on a 1748 surveying expedition. I'm on the Sunset Trough trip , a three-hour ride that, according to my research, offers "eagle sightings in a soft canyon glow."

The train has two engines, one at either end. Pulling us on the first leg of the journey through West Virginia's Trough Canyon is the Potomac Eagle 8250, an ungainly-looking, hard-working diesel road switcher built in 1955 for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Hauling us home on the opposite end is the powerful, photogenic 1755, which was used as a prop in the 2023 Tom Hanks film "A Man Called Otto." On both trains are coaches, dining cars, and even an open-air gondola, or what railroaders simply call a "gon," for those who want a wide view of the Trough and its eagles.

Mark Orwoll/Travel + Leisure

Meal service begins shortly after our 5 p.m. departure. Based on ticket class (and price), the food ranges from snack-bar items to a four-course dinner prepared on the train. The railroad has new owners, who are not only angling for an alcohol license (expected soon), but have invested heavily in the onboard cuisine.

“We do all the food preparation and cooking right here on the train,” says Gretta Ramsey, the line’s food and beverage manager, “which is important if you want to present a high level of meals. We’ve been able to upgrade the menu with more choices, more local food items, and in general, higher-quality ingredients.”

At a brief stop just before entering the Trough, guests can leave their assigned cars and move to the open gon. But with rain threatening, not everyone wants to. Too bad, because no sooner do we enter the Trough than an eagle dive-bombs from high above us to inches over the water’s surface. Another eagle does an Icarus over the canyon until it’s out of sight. Two eaglet siblings, barely fledged, cautiously pump their wings above the river, then return to their nest.

We’re lucky to have Robert “BJ” Lefever on this train. Lefever is an eagle spotter. He knows their nests, predation patterns, and how to find them in treetops, even surrounded by hundreds of identical treetops. Standing in the open gon, he shouts out the location of each bird so loudly that his voice often cracks. In less than five minutes in the Trough, we sight six eagles, with more to come. And Lefever is always the first to spot them.

“They call me ‘eagle-eye’ around here,” he says with a laugh.

The next day, I sampled a different scenic train of West Virginia. In the tiny town of Cass, 110 miles from Romney, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is holding its annual Parade of Steam when I arrive. The railroad rolls out all five of its Shay steam locomotives, tooting their whistles, chuffing black coal smoke, and fuming chutes of white steam through its piston valves and exhaust ports. The Parade of Steam is a veritable Miss America pageant of the Iron Horse.

The scene, when I arrive, is heart-stopping in its magnificence. These locomotives, weighing between 40 and 154 tons, are formidable beasts, loud and oily and reeking of burnt coal. Ash and embers fly through the air, leaving the bystanders blinking and rubbing their eyes. Engine grease soils the tracks. The noise is ungodly, ear-splitting. Water drips from the undersides of the locomotive boilers, leaving muddy paths alongside the wheels.  It is, in other words, spectacular.

Watching it all is visitor Patrick Tabor, a miner in a rock quarry near Roanoke, Virginia, three hours away.

“I’ve always been a railfan,” he tells me. He’s booked on two rides this weekend. “I grew up where there’s lots of railroad history. I especially like the steam trains.”

Another visitor, Nathan Watson, was originally from Cass, so he’s familiar with the steam locomotives and their sorrowful whistles resounding among the valleys.

“My grandpa was a brakeman here,” he says, “and lived across the river. I used to bum rides on the trains when I was a kid. I just love ’em.”

The railroad started in 1901 to carry timber down from the mountains to the Cass mill built by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. The grades are steep, as much as 9 percent, so the company used Shay locomotives, a revolutionary design that relies on geared wheels and which improves the traction. The lumber and mill business ended in 1960, and West Virginia’s state park system bought the rolling stock, engines, and right of way soon after. Tourist excursions began in 1963.

At the ticket office, a sign above the guichet says, “Special Rides Today.” When I inquire, the woman behind the grillwork says they have hour-long steam-driven rides in old parlor cars along the Greenbrier River, the next one leaving in 15 minutes. I unhesitatingly pay 30 bucks and quickly find passenger car 3607 on the train, make my way to my assigned four-person table, and take seat A, a window perch on the left side of the car.

Our train follows the Greenbrier Branch right of way of the former C&O Railroad, which back in the day would send trains to Cass to pick up milled lumber and bring it to market on the mainline. As it turns out, we are riding on a slightly abbreviated version of Cass Scenic Railroad’s newest itinerary, the Greenbrier Express , using the same cars and steam locomotives.

The Greenbrier River Valley is teeming with wildlife. Passengers may spy mergansers and mallards, deer, and even black bears. On this day, we see all those things and more, except for the bears. The shallow river, 30 feet broad, takes up most of the valley floor, leaving the train clinging to a steep hillside. The steam whistle echoes lugubriously among the slopes. Photogenic cascades froth down the sides of the hills, passing below our tracks and flowing into the river.

The rolling stock behind our locomotive includes a coal car, U.S. Mail Rail Post Office 706, West Virginia Central diner 202, Western Maryland Railroad passenger cars 3607 and 835, and Chesapeake & Ohio caboose 90658. Despite the mismatched cars, it is one hell of a handsome train.

The next day, I find myself again in Cass. I’ll stay overnight in one of the former Cass Company houses , built for the mill and railroad workers in the early 1900s and now available for rent. But at the moment, the big event is one the most scenic rail journeys in the country: the ride to Bald Knob, the third highest peak in West Virginia, on the Cass Scenic Railroad.

As we board at the Cass station, each passenger receives a plastic bag containing a “hobo lunch” (hamburger bun, cold cuts and cheese, macaroni salad, cookies, apple sauce, and bottled water). Some of the passengers dig into the chow right away, while others hang onto it, waiting until we reach Bald Knob, two hours up the mountain.

Our engine, Shay No. 11, was built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio in 1923. The Shays were designed for power and grip, not for speed. They can reach 11 mph if called upon, but average only about 6 mph on most trips.

The rolling stock on the Bald Knob excursion consists mainly of gondolas once used to carry cut trees to the mill. The state park put roofs over the cars and double-sided wooden bench seats lengthwise down the centers. Some far-thinking passengers have brought light jackets, in case the weather turns cold on the mountaintop, and which they use as seat cushions for the five-hour round-trip ride.

Our climb begins at an elevation of 2,452 feet; the summit, 11 miles away, is at 4,842 feet. Not every steam locomotive can make such a climb, especially considering the curves we have to contend with.

We come to a switch, where we reverse direction onto a new set of tracks. Our locomotive, which had been pushing us, is now pulling us. Coal smoke unexpectedly flows back into the open passenger cars. The train crew advises us to squint and look away if a cloud of smoke comes at us. Eyewash is available for anyone who needs it. Many do.

We pass three grand vistas where the tracks are higher than the treetops on the downslope side. Range after range of mountains come into view, fading from forest green to powder blue on the far horizon. The timberlands here are rich and varied: maple, oak, beech, birch, mountain ash, and the placer gold of timber, red spruce, prized by the lumber mills for its grain, strength, and beauty.

Finally, we pull into Bald Knob, two hours from Cass. Picnic tables are scattered about a vast meadow. From down in the valley, I can hear the high, lonesome whistle of another Shay, a sound at once joyous and mournful.

I take a seat by myself at one of the picnic tables and look into my day pack to see if any of my hobo lunch remains. Imagine my surprise when I open the pack and find the bottle of wine I’d bought days earlier and failed to use as a BYOB on the Potomac Eagle. I also discover a Par Mar gas station 16-ounce paper coffee cup (“Buy this size and save up to 1¢ per gallon”), which I’d picked up that morning. What are the odds?

No alcohol is allowed here or anywhere else in the state park. Yet high atop the knob, surrounded by dramatic and distant views of the wild mountains of West Virginia, I can’t resist. I open the wine, fill the coffee cup halfway, and raise a surreptitious toast to railroads everywhere, the older the better.

You can experience mountain logging railroading on the Cass Scenic Railroad. The railroad houses 11 steam locomotives with a large collection of Shay locomotives. Shay type locomotives are used to climb the steep mountain grades that reach as much as 11 percent. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the state’s first chartered railroad in 1827, reaching Harpers Ferry in 1837. Norfolk Southern serves over 800 route miles. Chesapeake & Ohio Railway No.1308, one of only two surviving 2-6-6-2 Mallet locomotives, is on display in Huntington .

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Once part of a thriving lumber industry in the early 1900’s, today the Cass Scenic Railroad is the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass. This popular scenic railway comes as close to riding a mountain logging train as you will ever find. The steam locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used in the rain forests of British Columbia for more than a half-century. The passenger cars are old logging flat-cars refurbished and made into passenger cars. A five hour scenic train ride to Bald Knob climbs to a spectacular view at an altitude of 4843 feet. The Cass Scenic Railroad employs four 3T Shay locomotives built by the Lima works between 1905 and 1945. The lone 3T Heisler, No.6, was built in 1929. Themed train rides include a Murder Mystery Train , along with other train rides that offer a buffet dinner and live bluegrass entertainment. Directions.

railroad excursions west virginia

By Dale Leatherman

September 05, 2024

There are countless ways to enjoy the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding natural areas that cover West Virginia, from hiking and biking to rafting and ATVing. However, breaking a sweat is not always necessary to experience the spectacular foliage and mountain views.

Take a seat on one of the Mountain State’s scenic train rides and prepare to be entertained by the train staff's commentary, colors of the hardwood forest, surprise appearances by wildlife, and panoramas of distant valleys and peaks.

Scenic train excursions depart from Cass , Elkins , and Romney in West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands, each with a different vibe and wilderness route. Watch for special themed events throughout the season.

Scenic train rides from Cass

As the centerpiece of the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park , Cass looks much as it did in 1901, when it was built as a company town for lumber mill workers. The preserved town is home to five geared Shay steam locomotives (the world’s largest fleet), including Shay No. 5.

Built almost 120 years ago, the oldest Shay still running anywhere in the world draws rail buffs from all over. There’s also a Heisler engine and a Climax engine.

Adjacent to the train station, the Cass Company Store also houses Shays Restaurant and Soda Fountain. In the Cass Historical District, spacious company houses where lumber mill workers’ families once lived have been restored with modern amenities and are available for rent.

Info: Rates start at $163.

1. Bald Knob Overlook

Duration: 4.5 hours round-trip

From Cass, tracks extend to the Bald Knob overlook , the state’s third-highest point. Trains once carried timber down from the mountains to a mill in Cass. The same coal-burning steam engines now take passengers 11 miles up Back Allegheny Mountain.

The steep climb gains almost 2,400 feet in elevation, and as the train chugs along at about 6 mph, passengers can spot deer and other wildlife. The rail cars are roofed but open, with outward-facing benches down the middle. The air cools during the two-hour ascent, so a light jacket is a good option.

Maple, oak, birch, and red spruce display their colors along the way. In the distance, mountain ranges resemble rumpled quilts against blue skies. The Green Bank Observatory and its enormous Robert C. Byrd Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope, are visible in the valley.

Info: Adults, $91; tickets include a “hobo” lunch (sandwich, chips, cookies, and bottled water).

2. Whittaker Station

Duration: 2 hours round-trip

This excursion to the  Whittaker Station logging camp climbs high enough for panoramic views of the countryside below. The steam locomotive chugs past the Cass water tower and machine shop, then starts its steep ascent of Cheat Mountain.

Leatherbark Creek runs alongside the track, sometimes offering glimpses of wildlife that have come to drink. Hardwood forest crowds the route, providing a colorful show of fall foliage.

The engines push and pull the rail cars through two switchbacks, belching black smoke from the effort. Just past Cass Cave, the train arrives at Whittaker Station, a re-created logging camp with a shady picnic area. Passengers have 30 minutes to enjoy lunch, the view, and the historic elements of the logging camp.

Info: Adults, $71.

Duration: 5.5 hours round-trip

West Virginia’s newest train outing is aboard the Greenbrier Express , a vintage steam locomotive that pulls passenger cars alongside the Greenbrier River and through the rugged Monongahela National Forest.

Riders may spot deer, otters, and a rare black bear along with eagles, hawks, and other birds. Upon arrival at the small mountain town of Durbin, lunch is served on the train, in the depot, or in a local restaurant. Passengers have plenty of time to check out the Rail & Trail Store and other shops before returning to Cass.

Info: Adults, $91.

Back by popular demand, the scenic Cass to Spruce trip travels to the ghost town of Spruce, established in 1902 at the headwaters of the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. Once a thriving mill town similar to Cass, it’s been abandoned since 1949.

In Spruce, passengers can study the historical signage, enjoy their “hobo” lunches, and search for ghosts. The ride is powered by Western Maryland Shay No. 6, the last Shay locomotive built and the largest one in existence today. This popular outing occurs only a few times a year and is sold out for 2024.

Info: Adults, $81.

5. Christmas at Cass

During the annual  Christmas at Cass  celebration, multicolored lights and decorations festoon the old mill town’s streets, houses, and businesses. Throughout December, the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park hosts a variety of holiday activities that typically include a tree-decorating and lighting ceremony, visits (and a breakfast) with Santa, an artisan market featuring local crafts, and a holiday square dance.

From Thursday, December 5, through Sunday, December 22, Christmas-themed trains pulled by vintage steam locomotives will depart from Cass Depot for a 75- to 90-minute excursion alongside the Greenbrier River. Passengers ride in gaily decorated coaches that are enclosed and heated.

Book early for seats in the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad caboose at the rear of the train. After the train ride, children can visit with Santa in his workshop and enjoy free holiday crafts and games.

Scenic train ride from Elkins

This charming mountain college town was built as a railroad community about 120 years ago. Although many of the buildings downtown have been repurposed, a stroll through the compact area offers a glimpse of its former life.

The Elkins Depot Welcome Center is a good place to learn about the town’s arts and dining scene, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Info: Hours vary seasonally, check website. Just down the street, the 1902 Darden Mill houses the West Virginia Railroad Museum and the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center (open Thursdays–Sundays from May through October).

6. New Tygart Flyer

Duration: 4 hours round-trip

Aerial view of new Tygart Flyer.

Southern Living lauds this 46-mile round-trip journey as one of the South’s best fall foliage train rides. Climate-controlled cars offer comfortable seating, and the ride includes a buffet lunch. Upgrading to the Parlor Car means private seating (no children under 12) and an expanded lunch menu with wine.

Wherever you’re seated, the view is riveting as the diesel locomotive climbs mountain grades, rumbles through a winding tunnel, and passes over a high river bridge on its way along the Shavers Fork to the remote High Falls of the Cheat. You’ll have a chance to stretch your legs and admire the 18-foot-high falls before the return trip.

Info: Adults, $91 (Parlor Car, $106).

Scenic train rides from Romney

Located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia near the Potomac River, Romney serves as the county seat of Hampshire County and is its natural beauty and outdoor recreation, including hiking and fishing.

Founded in 1762, Romney is one of the oldest towns in West Virginia. Known for its historic charm, the town—named after a city in England—features several buildings and sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

7. Trough Canyon

Duration: 3 hours round-trip

Departing from Romney, Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad (PESR) trains are powered by vintage diesel locomotives that pull a string of passenger cars, dining cars, open-air gondolas, and restored 1950s club cars with loveseats. Choose from five classes with a range of dinner options, including a four-course meal prepared on the train and heavy hors d’oeuvres in the club cars.

Soon after coffee is served, all attention is on the Trough, an inelegant name (thanks, George Washington) for a beautiful canyon on the South Branch of the Potomac River. Dense forest descends on both sides to the banks of the clear mountain river. Little has changed in this remote valley since Washington visited in 1748.

The Trough’s pristine nature has attracted generations of bald eagles. Sightings of more than a half-dozen birds in flight or nesting—along with other wild creatures—are standard fare on the Trough Canyon ride to Sycamore Bridge and back. Adult fares start at $70.

A Sunset Trough outing takes advantage of the soft evening light and stirrings of nocturnal creatures.

Info: Adult fares start at $70.

8. Petersburg

Duration: 9 hours round-trip

PESR’s All Day Petersburg excursion passes through the Trough to the end of the line at Petersburg, offering views of the Allegheny Mountains, lush forests, and the South Branch of the Potomac River. The journey includes a three-hour layover to visit Smoke Hole Caverns or other local attractions.

Info: Adult fares start at $110.

9. Holiday rides

Duration: various rides offered, 75 minutes to 3 hours

PESR has special rail journeys throughout the year, but the Romney station and trains are immersed in the holiday season from mid-November through December. The three-hour Holiday Trough ride features merry seasonal music and traditional holiday dinners. Adult fares start at $120.

Passengers on the North Pole Express are invited to board the train in their pajamas for a 75-minute trip with cookies and milk, storytelling, and caroling. Santa Claus climbs aboard at the North Pole and gives each child a gift. Additional festivities, including a Nativity with live animals, take place before and after the trip at the station’s event barn.

Info: Adult fares start at $57; children’s fares start at $47.

Rail Explorers rail bike excursion.

Rail Explorers offer 12-mile, two-hour rail bike excursions on the historic Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad. Photo courtesy Rail Explorers Elk River

There’s a new way to ride the rails in West Virginia. In June 2024, Rail Explorers : Elk River, a national company, launched a 12-mile, two-hour rail bike excursion on the historic Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad.

The tracks run through pristine forest along Buffalo Creek, passing the Devil’s Sawmill Waterfall (one of the falls on the state’s Waterfall Trail ) and crossing the Sand Fork Bridge before reaching the picnic area at the turnaround.

The custom-built two- or four-seat rail bikes are like e-bikes: Passengers pedal but an electric motor assists going uphill and hydraulic brakes are available when going downhill.

The all-steel open-air bikes offer a safe, effortless, and eco-friendly ride for passengers of all ages. (At least one passenger must be 16 years or older and capable of operating the electric motor and brake.)

West Virginia Fall Foliage Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

Last revised: August 24, 2024

By:  Adam Burns

West Virginia is nationally recognized for its scenic beauty with the state almost entirely blanketed within the Appalachian Mountains.  In addition, with a small population and areas which rarely see humans at all much of the Mountain State remains undeveloped.

As a result, autumns here are absolutely breathtaking and attract thousands of visitors each year.  Many of these tourist stick to main highways and rural backroads.  However, many are not aware that you can also enjoy the colors by rail as well.

The West Virginia Central/Durbin & Greenbrier Valley has become the top attraction for such trips as passengers can do so within climate-controlled cars while also enjoying a full course meal if they so choose.

However, the Cass Scenic Railroad is also a top attraction thanks to its location and use of rare geared steam locomotives.  Their fall foliage trips each September is one of their busiest times of the year, as well as a way to cap each operating season.

As the weather grows colder the railroad shuts down for the winter and overhauls its locomotives and rolling stock as needed.

The information included on this page highlights all of the fall foliage train rides available in West Virginia, which currently includes Cass Scenic, West Virginia Central, Potomac Eagle Scenic, and the Autumn Colors Express which departs from Huntington.

Cass Scenic Railroad

(Cass) :   One of the nation's top heritage railroads and the best place to see geared steam locomotives in action is the Cass Scenic Railroad in rural Cass, a little over an hour's drive from either Lewisburg or Elkins.

It is also based just a few miles from the state's most famous ski resort, Snowshoe.  Situated within the Monongahela National Forest the railroad is well-suited to host picturesque fall foliage outings within the heart of West Virginia's Appalachian Mountains.

These trips, running up to 11 miles, feature open-air cars so please be sure to dress accordingly.  Trains depart from the rebuilt depot in Cass and wind their way up grades as high as 9%!

This is very, very steep for a main line railroad which typically finds anything over 2% or 3% quite rugged.  You can choose from three destinations; Whittaker Station (halfway), Bald Knob (top of the mountain), or a connection with the West Virginia Central at the old logging community of Spruce.

Soon, a fourth connection will be made with the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley near Cass along the Greenbrier River over the old Chesapeake & Ohio Railway's Greenbrier Branch (or Greenbrier Division).

This will allow for trips of 14 additional miles to rural Durbin.  Their seasonal schedule runs from May through the end of October.

Autumn Colors Express

(Huntington):  A train ride that runs exclusively for fall foliage viewing, the Autumn Colors Express has been held nearly every year since 1966.

Until 2019 it was hosted by the Collis P. Huntington Historical Society and known as the New River Train .  Alas, conflict with Amtrak and rising costs precluded the group from continuing beyond 2018.

As a result, a new operation known as the Railway Excursion Management Company took over.  They ran their first outing in 2019 and witnessed some 2,500 passengers.

The trip departs Huntington, rolls through Charleston and heads east as far as Hinton over the old Chesapeake & Ohio main line.  You initially follow the Mud River before reaching the Kanawha River.

This waterway is followed through Charleston and continues until entering the New River Gorge, the trip's highlight, at Gauley Bridge.

The beauty of this region, with its tall, foliage-draped cliffs above and water rapids below has made it a popular event for over a half-century.  While steam locomotives are no longer allowed, it continues to draw large crowds today.

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

(Romney) :  Located in the state's Eastern Panhandle on a branch line originally owned by the Baltimore & Ohio the Potomac Eagle Scenic meanders along the beautiful South Branch of the Potomac River featuring scenes of rolling hills, small towns, and bucolic farms.

The line was a relatively minor part of the 10,000+ mile B&O network; it was listed as two separate corridors, the 15.4-mile South Branch (Green Spring-Romney) and 36.6-mile Moorefield & Virginia Branch  (Romney-Petersburg).

Together, they acted as one singular route spanning 52 miles.  The West Virginia State Rail Authority (SRA) acquired the tracks in 1978 to prevent their abandonment by then-Chessie System.

At first freight trains were the only thing to be found here (via the South Branch Valley Railroad) but in 1991 public excursions began. The Potomac Eagle Scenic's schedule runs from May through November with Christmas specials held during December.

West Virginia Central Railroad

(Elkins) : Based in Elkins and not far from the Cass Scenic Railroad the WVC operates along the Greenbrier and Tygart Rivers offering a wide range of excursions in climate controlled cars.

The railroad began in 1998 when the state of West Virginia, via the State Rail Authority, acquired 132.13 miles of the old Western Maryland to prevent its near-certain abandonment by CSX Transportation.

Today, the WVC operates from Tygart Junction to Elkins (via Belington) as well as from Elkins to Big Cut (via Spruce).

Interestingly, the largest section between Bemis and Webster Springs (80 miles) has sat disused for more than 20 years and is unlikely to be reactivated.

The West Virginia Central does not host a dedicated fall foliage train but its schedule runs through the autumn season.

Most trips depart from the beautifully preserved WM depot in Elkins (also the railroad's headquarters) and follows either Roaring Creek or the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.  The WVC is one of four fabulous choices to see the Mountain State's fall colors by rail.

The same company also operates the  Durbin & Greenbrier Valley  just down the road in Durbin, which uses a restored Climax geared steam locomotive via open-air cars along a short stretch of the C&O's old Greenbrier Branch, which will soon reconnect with the Cass Scenic in Cass.
