When it comes to traveling, knowing the luggage policy is very crucial. The last thing you want is to deal with unexpected fees (which can be ridiculously high) and delays because you’re carrying prohibited items. We’ve learned from our past mistakes; you don’t have to go through that. That said, as avid travelers, we love how Qatar Airways, an eight-time World’s Best Airline as of 2024, has a generous policy compared to many other airlines. If you’re planning to fly with Qatar, knowing the Qatar Airways luggage policy is important. Below, you’ll find a detailed overview of the luggage regulations, covering everything from checked luggage allowances to the restrictions. This guide will help you pack more efficiently and confidently!

Luggage allowance

We’ve flown with Qatar Airways a few times before, and our past experiences have never been anything but great. We have to say that Qatar offers a pretty generous luggage weight, depending on your booking class and destination. Even the Qatar Airways baggage allowance to USA is up to 23kg/50lbs for the cheapest seat. Here’s a detailed breakdown:

Carry-on Luggage

Additionally, there’s no size limit for your personal item. However, you should note that the only items permitted are small bags like a handbag or a small briefcase. For the carry-on, it shouldn’t exceed the size of 20x15x10 inches or 50x37x25 cm.

Checked Luggage

• To/from all destinations
• To/from Africa or the Americas

Additional luggage

Qatar Airways allows passengers to purchase additional baggage allowance beyond their standard allotment. This is especially useful whenever we have to travel with larger or heavier items. It’s also a great offer for those who simply need more space for their belongings.

Furthermore, you can do more to save your money aside from hunting for Qatar Airways’ cheap tickets . You can save up to 20% by purchasing an additional luggage allowance online up to 6 hours before your departure. We find this offer to be a great deal, as it gives you a significant cost advantage compared to purchasing at the airport. If you need to add extra baggage at the airport, you can do so at the Qatar Airways offices or check-in counters. However, standard rates will apply, which may be higher than the pre-purchase prices.

That said, the Qatar Airways extra baggage price for international flights is charged per kg (2.2 lbs), ensuring a fair and transparent pricing structure. For more detailed information, you can check the table below.

Special items

In addition to the luggage weight for Qatar Airways above, the airline also has some specific guidelines if you want to transport special luggage items to ensure safety and compliance with regulations. These special items are split into a few categories:

Sporting equipment

• Your sporting equipment is categorized as checked luggage and part of your luggage allowance.
• Small and medium sporting equipment shouldn’t exceed 217cm (length + width + height). Meanwhile, larger pieces shouldn’t exceed 300cm.
• The rates are applied according to your travel origin and destination.
• The booking must be made up to 6 hours before your departure.

Musical instruments

• Fragile musical instruments can be carried in the cabin. However, they require a ticket for the seat they occupy.
• The maximum weight for the musical instruments is 75kg per seat, and the maximum length is 120cm.
• Each passenger can book a maximum of 3 extra seats (excluding their seat).

Wheelchairs

• Qatar Airways will transport your wheelchair for free.
• If you bring your wheelchair, please notify the airline when you book your seat or after.

Restricted items

Qatar Airways has specific restrictions on items that can be carried in both checked and carry-on baggage. These restrictions are in place for safety and security reasons.

• Weapons: Firearms, replicas, and parts thereof; stun guns, tasers, and other incapacitating devices; knives, scissors, and other sharp objects; and martial arts weapons.
• Dangerous goods: Explosives, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizing agents, toxic substances, corrosive substances, radioactive materials, and infectious substances.
• Pressurized containers: Aerosols, lighters, and butane canisters.
• Liquids, gels, and pastes: Liquids in containers larger than 100 ml (3.4 oz) must be placed in a sealed, 1-liter (33.8 oz) bag.
• Batteries: Spare lithium batteries with a watt-hour rating exceeding 100 Wh up to 160 Wh require prior approval. Batteries exceeding 160 Wh are prohibited.  
• Drones: Drones with batteries exceeding 160 Wh are prohibited. Meanwhile, drones with batteries between 100 Wh and 160 Wh will require prior approval.

Mishandled luggage

While Qatar Airways generally has a good reputation for handling luggage, mishandled luggage incidents can occur. While we never experience this, it’s important to know what to do and understand the Qatar Airways luggage policy fully.

If your luggage is delayed, Qatar Airways will attempt to locate it as soon as possible. Normally, this process will not take more than 24 hours, and your luggage will be delivered to your destination.

However, if you need to make a report for mishandled luggage, you should do it at the arrival airport. Go to the Qatar Airways baggage services counter to get your file reference number. Then, use the number to view the status update of your luggage. This process is easy thanks to the airline’s automated tracking system. In addition, you can also submit the report online if you’ve already left the airport.

One of the things that makes us a huge fan of Qatar Airways is its pet policy. The airline generally accepts domesticated dogs, cats, and birds as checked baggage. As dog owners, we never have to worry as Qatar’s guidelines adhere to the current regulations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Qatar Airways welcomes service dogs on all flights. They can travel free of charge in the passenger cabin on certain routes or as checked baggage in the hold on others. Please check with Qatar Airways to confirm any country-specific regulations regarding service dogs in the cabin.

Based on our experience, we had to notify the airline about traveling with our dog at least 48 hours before our flight. We also had to prepare all the necessary documents, including our dog’s health certificate and identification. What about the pet container? For the safety and comfort of our pet, we made sure that our container was big enough for our dog to stand up, sit down, and turn around comfortably. We also chose a container that had sufficient openings for ventilation to prevent overheating.

How to Pack Efficiently According to Qatar Airways’ Luggage Policy?

Before you embark on your journey, it’s important to familiarize yourself with Qatar Airways’ luggage regulations above. Below are some tips to help you pack more efficiently.

Check your ticket

The easiest way to check your luggage allowance is by checking your e-ticket. It’s normally shown there, so you can decide how much to pack. You’ll want to make a list of essentials and pack accordingly.

Weigh your bags

Unless you’re okay with paying more for additional luggage, you should always weigh your bags. Use a proper luggage scale to ensure you’re within weight limits. A little advice from us: choose lightweight, versatile clothing and minimize unnecessary items.

Always remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-on. Containers must be 3.4oz/100ml or smaller, fit in a 1-quart-sized bag, and be limited to one bag per passenger.

We accept sporting equipment as checked baggage that's part of the allowance on your ticket. Any sporting equipment that exceeds this allowance will be subject to the following rates:

• When purchased in advance, specific sporting equipment rates will apply.
• When purchased at the airport, regular extra baggage rates will apply.

Terms and conditions

• Rates are applied according to the origin and destination, irrespective of the point of sale.
• The sporting equipment rates mentioned above only apply when purchased up to 6 hours prior to departure. Standard extra baggage rates will apply thereafter.
• Changes are permitted free of charge.
• The value can be refunded or returned in the form of a voucher in the case of cancellation by the airline. 
• The size of small or medium pieces should not exceed a dimension of 217cm (length + width + height).
• The size of large pieces should not exceed a dimension of 300cm (length + width + height).

Sporting weapons and ammunition

Sporting weapons and ammunition may be carried as checked baggage or cargo if all the requirements for travelling with restricted baggage items are met and prior approval has been granted. 

Bring your own wheelchair

We carry passengers’ wheelchairs at no extra cost. If you intend to travel with your own wheelchair or mobility aid, please inform us either at the seat booking stage or after you have made the booking.

Important information:

• You will be able to use your personal wheelchair/mobility aid wherever possible. However, another wheelchair will be used to take you to your allocated seat on the aircraft.
• Battery-powered wheelchairs/mobility aids will be accepted as checked baggage. We will not accept equipment with a damaged or leaking battery.
• Please provide sufficient details about your wheelchair/mobility aid and batteries to our staff prior to travel. This will enable our staff to better assist you, as well as take adequate safety measures.

Need to request a wheelchair?

We provide mobility assistance service to help passengers through the airport and offer on-board wheelchairs on all wide-bodied aircraft (A330, A340 and B777). 

You may submit a special service request for a wheelchair in 'Manage booking' after the booking has been made, or by contacting your local Qatar Airways office at least 48 hours before departure. A list of our office contact details can be found  here .

Fragile musical instruments may be carried in the cabin, but they will require the purchase of a ticket for the seat they occupy.

The maximum weight allowed is 75kg per seat, and the maximum length is 120cm per seat. Any item that exceeds the weight/length limit will require another seat.

A maximum of 3 extra seats can be booked per passenger, in addition to the passenger's own seat, depending upon the aircraft seat configuration.

Packaging guidelines

Ready to start packing? Make sure your sporting equipment or special items are packed to perfection to ensure a smooth journey.

Customers travelling with balls intended for sports (such as footballs, basketballs and soccer balls), can pack them as carry-on or checked baggage. Balls must be partially deflated (containing no more than 70% of the ball air capacity) to avoid any incidents due to the change in pressure on-board the aircraft.

Customers travelling with a bicycle should ensure it is packed in a strong, custom-made cardboard box or bike case. We advise customers to use foam tubes around bike parts to ensure better protection of the parts if the bike is packed in a box. Tyres must be deflated, pedals must be removed, and handlebars must be turned and fixed lengthways. 

Customers travelling with ski equipment should ensure they place their ski equipment in a ski bag, making sure the bag is well-padded. To ensure maximum protection, we recommend you use hard case for packing your ski equipment.

Customers travelling with golf equipment should ensure they carry it in a soft or hard golf case bag (hard cases are preferable). Golf bags and clubs will be carried as cargo or checked baggage.

Customers travelling with surfboards are advised to pack their surfboard in bags with reinforced foam padding and water-resistant materials, and durable zippers. If your bag doesn't have padding, you may use clothing and towels for padding. Using a hard case will offer the best protection. Make sure you detach the fins of your surfboard before packing. Surfboards maximum dimensions must be less than 300cm (L+W+H). Items with greater dimensions will be carried as cargo.

Customers travelling with fishing equipment are advised to place their equipment in padded hard cases customised to fishing equipment. All rods, nets, tackle boxes, nd other bulky equipment will be carried as cargo or checked baggage and must be suitably packed.

Customers travelling with kayaks are advised to consider the following:

• Always dry off the kayak and accessories before packing them away. This will preserve the condition of your kayak.
• Deflate the kayak.
• Fold the sides of the kayak towards the middle and align the spray skirts towards the centre. 
• Roll the kayak from the bow to the stern where the air valves are located. This will help push the air out as you roll it up. 
• Put the skeg protectors on the skegs and pack everything into the carry bag, making sure the bag is well-padded.
• Make sure the mast/sail is detachable and collapsible.
• Kayaks maximum dimensions must be less than 300cm (L+W+H). Items with greater dimensions will be carried as cargo.

Customers travelling with windsurfing equipment are advised to consider the following:

• The windsurf/kitesurf board needs to be dismantled for travel.
• A board bag is recommended, and either a separate mast bag and sail/quiver bag, or a bag to accommodate both. 
• Use separate fin and boom bags (or pack them in with the board and masts respectively). 
• Ensure that the packaging of choice is well-padded and that your equipment has no sharp edges protruding out of the bag.
• Windsurf/kitesurf boards dimensions must be less than 300cm (L+W+H). Items with greater dimensions will be carried as cargo.

Customers travelling with diving equipment are advised to consider the following:

• We recommend packing your diving equipment in a scuba gear bag to protect them, including your fins and diving mask.
• Pack your diving mask in a hard case.
• Please pack valuable diving equipment such as your diving regulator and your diving computer in your carry-on baggage.
• To pack your buoyancy compensator (BC), make sure all the air is out before packing it. Then fold the sides fairly tightly so it is as small as possible.
• Please ensure all air and gas cylinders are empty prior to travel and that any underwater torches and knives are appropriately packed.

Customers travelling with trekking equipment are advised to consider the following:

• Make sure your bag is well-padded and no sharp edges are protruding from the bag.
• Trekking and hiking equipment such as fuel, pocket knives, trekking poles, camping stoves, a multi-tool or a machete and other sharp objects are not to be packed in hand luggage. 
• In general, all trekking equipment can be packed in checked baggage, keeping in mind that restrictions might apply in the destination airport.
• Wind instruments and brass instruments: trumpets, saxophone, clarinets, etc. 
• Instruments in the percussion family: gong bass drum, conga, snare drums, long drums, electronic drums, bongo drums, etc.
• String instruments: guitar, bass guitar, violin, cello double bass, banjo, lutes, etc. 
• Electronic instruments: keyboard, electronic guitars, etc.

Everything you need to know about Qatar Airways' baggage allowance

Before taking a flight, there are many things worth double- and triple-checking before you head to the airport or pack your case. Baggage allowance varies significantly between airlines and then again depending on the cabin class in which you're traveling.

Qatar Airways is a popular option for flyers given the carrier's extensive route network to destinations across Africa, Asia and beyond. However, the baggage allowance is different for each. So, the next time you're flying with Qatar, look no further so you know what your packing limits are.

Checked luggage

Passengers flying Qatar Airways to and from Brazil on the airline's fifth freedom flight from São Paulo to Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as Canada and the U.S., are permitted to check in two bags, each with varying weight restrictions depending on the cabin class. As usual, it's the passengers in economy who get slightly less weight allowance.

For passengers on flights between Doha and Casablanca and Marrakech, flights originating in Africa and all other destinations, passenger limits are based on weight and not the number of bags, meaning that you can bring as many bags as you like so long as the total weight does not exceed the limit.

The most generous of all the allowances are for passengers flying to Casablanca (CMN), Marrekech (RAK) and the rest of Africa, especially for economy passengers who are allowed to take up to 99 lbs. of luggage.

Note: The maximum dimension refers to the bag's length plus width plus height.

Carry-on luggage

As usual, there are also weight and size restrictions for the bags you take on board with you. The size of your bags, whichever class you're traveling in, should be within the maximum dimensions of 20 inches x 15 inches x 10 inches. The airline reminds passengers that if your laptop is in a separate laptop case, it must fit within your carry-on.

Additionally, each passenger is entitled to take one extra personal item on board with them. This can include but is not limited to, handbags, briefcases, coats, umbrellas, a pair of crutches, a walking stick, camera or binoculars, an infant's carrying basket and of course, duty free that was purchased before boarding the flight.

First and business class

Passengers in the airline's two premium cabins are entitled to take on board two pieces of hand luggage with a total maximum weight of 33 lbs.

Weight allowance is less in economy, as expected. Passengers are allowed one bag with a 15-lb limit -- unless you're on a flight to or from Brazil when the weight increases to 22 lbs.

Bottom line

It always pays to double-check your baggage allowance before you fly, as arriving at check-in with overweight or surplus baggage can ultimately mean hefty fines or even having to leave things behind.

Qatar Airways New Amenity Kits

Gone are the designer BRIC leather bags and in with non designer but functional leather pursers and man bags. Each business class Qsuite seat has an amenity bag depending on the person’s gender. All amenities inside the bag are the same, it is just the bag that is different. Men get a small messenger, sling bag or heck maybe call it a fanny pack . Women receive a purse. Each bag features an adjustable strap.

Each Qatar Airways amenity kit and gift box provides specially selected Diptyque products including:

Nourishing Lip Balm – enriched with roses and violets to soothe and soften the lips. Fresh Lotion for the Body – infused with the scent of orange blossoms, to refresh sleepy skin for all skin types. Essential Face Cream – nourishing and replenishing, with prickly pear extract to boost radiance. Diptyque fragrance – ‘Eau Rose’ Eau de Toilette – an infusion of the finest damascena and centifolia roses, or the brand’s signature ‘34 Boulevard Saint Germain’ Eau de Toilette with notes of amber, patchouli, cinnamon and rose. Inside the bag are Diptyque products  and “comfort items.” These includes a pair of socks and an eye mask. Slippers come in the same bag as the pajamas. Toothbrushes can be found in the lavitories, not in the amenity bag. Surprisingly, no ear plugs are available in the bags, but can be requested from a flight attendant. The new bags are actually very useful. On my most recent trip I found myself using the sling bag. Stuffing it full of sunscreen, my wallet, phone, and other sundries, I found the bag was perfect for traveling. This is likely one of the most useful amenity bags I have received to date. I have enough BRIC bags already to hold my toiletries and electronic cables. Nowadays, I don’t even touch an airlines amenity kit, saving the airline the waste. Unfortunately, the QATAR label on the bag is not discreet and quite ugly. The only real downside of this bag.

Here’s a photo of me sporting the bag on the flight. I am also featuring the limited edition World Cup Pajamas. These bode well with the World Cup Menu .  The messenger bag also works well in the fanny pack forward position too.
