Metro rail: Kazipara, Mirpur-10 stations to reopen soon

  • Kazipara station could be reopened by mid-September or October
  • However, reopening Mirpur-10 station will take a bit more time

Tribune Desk

The metro rail stations that were vandalized in July during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement are set to reopen soon.

The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has taken preparation to reopen the damaged Kazipara station.

Additionally, DMTCL is also planning to reopen the Mirpur-10 station in the near future.

Passengers want speedy renovation of Kazipara, Mirpur-10 metro rail stations

According to sources from the metro rail operating company, Kazipara station could be reopened by mid-September or October. However, reopening Mirpur-10 station will take a bit more time.

Both stations were damaged during attacks by vandals during the movement.

At that time, the government had estimated that it would take a year to repair and reopen the two stations. There was also extensive negative propaganda regarding the damage to the stations.

As a result, metro rail services were suspended from July 18.

However, the services resumed on August 25, excluding Kazipara and Mirpur-10 stations.

DMTCL sources have stated that Kazipara station was less damaged compared to Mirpur-10. Although one side of Kazipara station is damaged, the other side remains intact. In contrast, Mirpur-10 station has been completely damaged.

Therefore, the metro rail operating company is considering using spare parts from other stations to reopen Kazipara station. Additionally, efforts are being made to expedite the reopening of Mirpur-10 station with the help of consulting firms.

The sources further noted that the equipment used in the metro rail stations is proprietary and cannot be obtained from other manufacturers due to its specialized design and system.

Among the two stations, the fare collection system was the most severely damaged. However, it is not necessary to purchase a completely new system; only the damaged parts are needed. Therefore, parts from stations with relatively lower passenger traffic will be used to repair the damaged stations, aiming to resume full service as soon as possible.
