Located on Mexico's Pacific coast, Zihuatanejo offers travelers an authentic Mexico experience full of brilliant sunsets and laid-back vibes. In this fishing village, shopaholics can buy local handicrafts (think: ceramics and woodcarvings), and foodies can savor fresh fish tacos and ceviche along the beach. The city's Playa La Ropa serves as the main beach and stands out because of its clean, family-friendly atmosphere. Playa Larga, another excellent beach option, is set slightly outside of town, so it offers a quieter atmosphere and plenty of room to sprawl out. Just off the coast, divers and snorkelers can pick from several dive sites brimming with marine life.

Home to Mexico's most famous waterfront Mayan ruins, Tulum appeals to history buffs and water lovers alike. Positioned along a coastal stretch of the Riviera Maya, about 40 miles south of Playa del Carmen, Tulum offers some of the best hotels in Mexico , ranging from small boutique hotels to wellness retreats to all-inclusive resorts. Regardless of where you stay, you can spend time lounging on some of the world's most beautiful beaches (try traveler-approved Playa Paraíso or Playa Ruinas), exploring ancient ruins (consider booking a daytrip to nearby Chichén Itzá for a larger-scale site) and swimming in secluded cenotes, unique underwater caves located around the Yucatán Peninsula.

This island is probably best known for two things: coral reefs and cruise ships. Travelers love this destination's brilliant blue water and laid-back beaches, plus its abundance of water sports activities. Numerous outfitters and resorts offer kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear. While you could spend every minute in the water or on the beach with a good book, Cozumel is also a quiet place to learn about Mayan culture. Visit the Mayan ruins at San Gervasio archaeological site for a dose of pre-Hispanic history.

Ixtapa's curved coastline is packed with hotels, restaurants and nightlife, giving the Pacific coast city (located just north of Zihuatanejo) a bustling vibe. Playa El Palmar, the main beach, often proves better for sunset strolls and people-watching than swimming or snorkeling due to the strong waves. Still, warm, clear and generally gentle water and coral beds farther offshore make Ixtapa one of the best places for beginner scuba enthusiasts. Anyone interested in the area's history should also explore the Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande, a small museum that details the various cultures and events that make the region unique. 

A great option for a weekend stay or a quick daytrip tour , Isla Mujeres is set off the coast of Cancún and offers beautiful beaches perfect for relaxation and coral reefs ready for exploration. In fact, it's one of the best places to go snorkeling in the world thanks to a unique underwater museum and one of the world's largest coral reefs (home to all sorts of colorful fish). See marine life from another perspective on a glass bottom boat. When you want to catch some rays, Playa Norte is the most popular beach, framed by white sand, turquoise water and swaying palm trees.

Quiet beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and stunning crystal-clear water are some of Isla Holbox's standout attributes. This up-and-coming slice of paradise is perfect for travelers looking to truly get away from it all, thanks to its car-free, off-the-beaten-path location. Isla Holbox is situated off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and only 26 miles long. Expect quaint boutique hotels, stretches of white sand beaches (Playa Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito are two top spots), opportunities for snorkeling and sailing, and more than 100 species of birds, including vibrantly colored flamingoes.

About 25 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is a small beach town known for awesome surfing conditions and scenic stretches of sand. If you've never surfed before, sign up for a lesson from a local to learn. Visitors can also go whale watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding or zip lining, or hop on a relaxing boat tour. After a day of fun in the sun, head into town to check out the local art galleries and grab a bite to eat at one of the tasty restaurants (Sayulita is a burgeoning foodie destination), which feature everything from cheap eats to fine dining.

Anglers recognize Manzanillo as a world-class deep-sea fishing destination for anyone searching for sailfish and marlin, but many types of travelers will enjoy a trip to this Pacific coast destination, located 170 miles south of Puerto Vallarta. The city's two bays mean there is no shortage of beaches for visitors to swim and sunbathe on: Top spots include Playa la Audiencia and Playa Salagua. Water sports like snorkeling and kayaking are also popular activities to enjoy here. If you have time, visit the small town of Barra de Navidad (about 30 miles northwest) for charming hotels, restaurants and stores along the beach.

Not to mention, travelers will find diverse and cheap street food served from various carts in the downtown area. Visiting in fall or winter will ensure you see this city (one of the most-visited spots in Mexico) in its most tranquil light, but December through April is when the weather is closest to perfect.

Ornate baroque and neoclassical buildings, busy plazas and colorful homes are everywhere you turn in this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city. Guanajuato, situated about 50 miles west of San Miguel de Allende, is known for its subterranean streets and tunnels, which you can explore on a walking tour or at your own leisure. After admiring the city's cobblestone roadways and charming colonial architecture, grab a souvenir or bite to eat at the bustling Mercado Hidalgo. If you enjoy art, arrive in October when the popular Festival Internacional Cervantino takes place.

As the capital of Yucatán, Mérida's rich culture is visible around every turn. White stone mansions line Paseo de Montejo (the city's main street), while vibrant Sunday markets provide a taste of old-world Mexico. Those looking for Mayan ruins are also in luck; many ancient archaeological sites are in close proximity, including the famed Chichén Itzá just 75 miles east. Meanwhile, museum and art enthusiasts praise El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida, as well as the city's art galleries and local murals. The most populous city in Mexico is steeped in history and culture. Mexico City boasts delectable cuisine, ancient Aztec sites and world-class hotels – all at fairly low costs – but if you feel like splurging, you'll find an array of high-end shops along the tree-lined Avenida Presidente Masaryk in the Polanco neighborhood. Must-see attractions in Mexico City include the Zócalo, the Palace of Fine Arts, Chapultepec Castle and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. And if you want to eat your way through the city, consider signing up for a food tour .

For a vacation packed with authentic character, head to Puebla. This city, which sits about 80 miles southeast of Mexico City, is filled with colonial architecture and numerous churches, but its main draws are its stunning Talavera pottery, its historical forts and museums, and its sweet and spicy cuisine. Visitors must try mole poblano (made with numerous ingredients, including chiles, meat, chocolate, cinnamon and garlic) and chiles en nogada (chiles stuffed with beef and served with a walnut sauce and fruit like peaches, apples and pomegranate seeds). Playa del Carmen boasts an exciting food scene, with eateries dishing out everything from delectable tacos and tostadas to sushi and expertly cooked seafood, plus an even hipper bar culture. What's more, this destination in the Riviera Maya beckons to vacationers with its soft white sand blanketing its beaches and its stunning shoreline views. Visitors can also bike to a nearby cenote for a refreshing dip or hit the links at one of the numerous surrounding golf courses. All-inclusive resorts , vacation rentals and boutique properties abound in Playa del Carmen, too, giving travelers plenty of options to find the best fit for their preferences and budgets.

This secluded vacation spot is known for its luxurious lodging options (from vacation rentals to high-end hotels like the St. Regis and the Four Seasons), golf courses and charming beaches, such as El Anclote and Playa de Punta Mita. The small resort village of Punta Mita sits on a peninsula in Banderas Bay and most appeals to travelers seeking a relaxing atmosphere. Those interested in scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and surfing will be able to enjoy those activities here as well. If you're visiting between December and March, book a whale watching tour for a chance to see humpback or orca whales.

Nestled along the turquoise shores of the Caribbean Sea, Mexico’s coastline unveils a mesmerizing tapestry of pristine beaches, each with its unique charm and allure.

In this exploration of paradise, I’ll uncover the 16 most beloved Caribbean beaches in Mexico , where the warmth of the sun is rivaled only by the hospitality of the locals.

Join me and discover the hidden gems and iconic stretches of coastline that make Mexico’s Caribbean shores a haven for beach lovers and adventure seekers alike.

16 TOP Beaches in the Mexican Caribbean

To learn all about the best beaches of the Caribbean Sea in Mexico, my first choice is Holbox , an island in the state of Quintana Roo, northeast of the Yucatan Peninsula .

Holbox used to be a small fishing village, but in recent years it has become a very popular tourist destination in the country.

To get to Holbox, you have to get to the town of Chiquilá and take a ferry to the island.

How much does it cost to get to Holbox?

The one-way ticket is 220 pesos per adult and 130 pesos per child, departures are every half hour and the crossing time is approximately 25 minutes.

You will be able to find an option to suit your budget, there are from basic hostels to high-end hotels.

Besides relaxing and enjoying the beach, some of the activities you can practice are swimming with the whale sharks, appreciating the bioluminescence, fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling.

2. Playa del Carmen

Another place you must know about in the Mexican Caribbean is Playa del Carmen and all it has to offer.

Playa del Carmen is the heart of the Riviera Maya, it is located in the Yucatan Peninsula north of the state of Quintana Roo.

You can enjoy the beach from your hotel, or go to some of the free access beach clubs.

Besides its famous “Quinta Avenida,” you’ll find beaches, cenotes, theme parks, museums, water activities, and much more.

Again, one of its main attractions is Fifth Avenue , the main street of the city, you can find cafes, bars, stores, hotels, and more.

You can also connect with nature by exploring the archaeological sites in Playa del Carmen, these are the archaeological sites of Coba and Xaman-Ha.

3. Akumal Beach – Mexico Caribbean

Another of the best beaches in the Mexican Caribbean is Akumal , its name comes from the Mayan language and means “Place of turtles.”

Akumal is home to a large number of turtles and you can practice scuba diving or snorkeling to have a close encounter with this marine species.

You will learn about the strict rules for swimming with turtles, as the Mexican government declared Akumal a natural protected area.

In addition to turtles, Akumal has become a favorite destination for many because it is characterized as a beach with crystal clear waters and white sand.

Something you should know is that it used to be a public beach, but nowadays it has been privatized so only a segment of it is free to access.

How much does it cost to enter Akumal?

The entrance fee is 100 pesos per person including the use of showers and restrooms, you must pay in cash since they don’t accept credit cards.

4. Puerto Morelos

Perhaps one of the best places in the Mexican Caribbean is Puerto Morelos .

This important port of the state of Quintana Roo is located in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Because it still preserves its essence as a fishing village and has not had a strong transformation, it attracts thousands of tourists every year.

It is also known because it is home to the second largest reef on the planet, which is known as the “Great Mayan Reef.”

Definitely in Puerto Morelos, you can enjoy the tranquility of its beaches, the waves are low, the waters are crystal clear and the sand is white, fine, and soft.

You can have a great time doing some water activities such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and windsurfing.

Some options not to be missed are the route of the cenotes, the Selvática Ecological Park , and/or the National Marine Park Arrecifes de Puerto Morelos.

5. Playa Delfines

Undoubtedly one of the top beaches where you can enjoy the Caribbean sand is Playa Delfines , in Cancun .

Because of its proximity to Cancun’s hotel zone, Playa Delfines is one of the most sought-after beaches and one of the most beautiful.

If you come to Playa Delfines you will surely be enchanted with the spectacular blue color of its waters, and its fine and soft white sand.

It also has a viewpoint where you can enjoy the incredible views of the Mexican Caribbean Sea, and have your picture taken at the Cancun photo booth .

Now, as for the name (Dolphin Beach) , you may wonder if there are any of them around here.

If you get lucky and come early morning, you have a good chance to see some dolphins from close.

Among the services offered at Playa Delfines are parking, restrooms, and showers for visitors.

6. Paradise Beach – Playa Paraiso

Now it’s time to talk about one of my favorite Caribbean beaches, Playa Paraiso.

This “Paradise” is in Tulum , Quintana Roo, and can be accessed by car, bus, or cab.

Most visitors agree, myself included , that on this beach, you feel a very nice and relaxing sensation as if you were in paradise.

Because it is surrounded by nature and you can see a contrast of different shades of blue sea.

At Playa Paraiso, you can rent chairs and umbrellas, and eat and take a snack from the restaurants near the area.

It is also a good place to practice water activities such as snorkeling or diving and appreciate the reef under the sea.

7. Xpu-Ha, Mexico, one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean

Xpu-Ha is a Mayan word that means “estuary of the two waters.” It is very close to Playa del Carmen.

The entrance fee to Xpu-Ha beach is around 50 pesos (3 USD) . But if you spend a minimum of 120 pesos on the beach club, you will get your money back when you leave.

Xpu Ha beach is quiet, its waters are crystal clear and warm, it is not very deep and its white sand is soft.

Some of the services available to complement your visit are beach chairs, lounge chairs, palapas, showers, restrooms, tables, and chairs.

They also have enough gear to practice some water activities such as kayaking, diving, and snorkeling to enjoy the marine life.

There is also a restaurant, where you can enjoy a quick snack or a full meal accompanied by delicious drinks.

8. Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte welcomes thousands of tourists every year and is one of the most visited beaches in the world.

In fact, in a Forbes article, I found that it is one of the 25 best beaches in the world in the Travellers Choice Awards.

Playa Norte is a public beach, and as its name suggests, it is located in the northern part of Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo.

It is a beach of white sand and crystal clear waters; it’s not very deep so being there it seems as if you were in a giant pool.

To complement your visit you can rent a palapa, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and equipment for water activities.

Finally, if you love sunsets, you cannot miss watching it from Play Norte, it is a spectacle !

9. Maroma Beach at Punta Maroma

Playa Maroma is a private beach in the municipality of Solidaridad in the state of Quintana Roo.

Because it is located at an intermediate point between Cancun and Playa del Carmen , its access is a little complicated so I recommend you to get there by car rental or cab.

How much is the entrance fee to Playa Maroma?

Playa Maroma is also a beach club so you will have to pay an entrance fee of 200 pesos per person, but believe me it will be worth it.

It has become one of the most beautiful destinations in the region due to its tranquil turquoise blue waters and soft white sand.

You can practice different water activities during your visit, among them are kayaking, diving or snorkeling and I believe there is an area to swim with dolphins.

There are also activities where you can tour the beach on ATVs, horses, or camels.

This is an interesting place to go to, it is south of the state of Quintana Roo (near Chetumal and the Belize border) .

Xcalak is a Mayan word that means “twins” or “two entrances,” and its beach is still considered a virgin beach.

Because Xcalak is a fishing village , one of the main activities you can do is sport fishing, specifically fly fishing.

Xcalak is very close to one of the largest and most beautiful reefs on the planet.

Therefore it is a perfect place to practice snorkeling or diving, and also some other activities such as kayaking, skimboarding, or paddleboarding.

11. Chankanaab

Chankanaab comes from the Mayan, Chan means “small” and Kanaab means “sea or ocean,” so Chankanaab is “small sea.”

Chankanaab is located on Cozumel Island, inside the National Marine Park.

How much is the entrance fee to Chankanaab?

The entrance fee is about 500 pesos for adults and 350 pesos for children from 4 to 12 years old, children under 3 are free.

Some of the services included are parking, restrooms, life jackets, showers, dressing rooms, hammocks, lounge chairs, and many more.

There are many activities to do, an example of these is swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, scuba diving, sea trekking, zip line, hanging out on the beach, and other options.

The park is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

12. Xcacel-Xcacelito

Xcacel is also considered a virgin beach and very little is known.

It sits on the Cancun-Tulum federal highway , approximately 50 km past Playa del Carmen and 20 km before Tulum.

Xcacel Beach boasts crystal clear turquoise blue waters and soft white sand, where you will surely have a relaxing visit.

It is a turtle sanctuary, so from May to November, you will surely be able to see the nests and/or births of thousands of loggerhead and white turtles.

Next to this beach, you can visit Xcacelito , a cenote surrounded by mangroves.

13. Xcalacocos

This pristine beach is just a few km from Playa del Carmen. Xcalacocos is a Mayan word meaning “Twin Coconuts.”

Due to the tranquility of the beach, its crystalline waters, with different shades of blue, and its soft white sand, you will surely enjoy a day full of relaxation.

Swimming here is a delight because of the shallow water.

Also, another cool thing to do at Xcalacocos is camping, just bring all the necessary stuff and you’re good to go!

Xcalacocos is surrounded by some cenotes, mangroves, and an orchid garden that makes a good activity to complement your visit.

14. Top Caribbean Beaches in Mexico: Playa Paamul

Playa Paamul is a beach a little far away but very nice and well worth a visit. It has become a favorite destination for many travelers.

Again, Paamul is a bit far to get to, about 28 km from Playa del Carmen and 46 km from Tulum, I recommend you rent a car or hire a cab.

Besides being a super beautiful beach for its turquoise waters and white sand, it is surrounded by a magnificent reef.

Therefore one of the main activities you can do in Playa Paamul is snorkeling or diving to appreciate the reef.

To preserve the area and its cleanliness, you are not allowed to enter with food and drinks.

However, there’s a very good restaurant on-site with good food and reasonably priced.

15. Playa Tortuga

We’re reaching the end of this article, so I wanna talk about another important and popular beach in the heart of Cancun: Playa Tortuga .

It is right in the northern area of Cancun’s hotel zone, so if you are staying there you can’t miss it.

Since it has parking you can access it by private car or public transportation, there is a bus that runs throughout the hotel zone.

It is also a very beautiful beach with turquoise blue waters and white sand, they are shallow so the waves are calm.

Due to the abundance of reefs, diving and snorkeling are must-do activities!

Playa Tortuga features restaurants, public restrooms, and rental of lounge chairs, umbrellas, and more.

16. El Cielo Cozumel

Oh yes, the home of Starfish. Playa El Cielo (Sky Beach) boasts the largest starfish population in all of the Mexican Caribbean.

Because it is approximately 800 meters off the coast of Cozumel, you will have to take a boat or catamaran.

These leave from 3 different points in the Chankanaab Park, at the dock of the Colombia Lagoon, and Palancar Beach.

The main activity to do here is snorkeling to observe the starfish, and some other species such as fish, manta rays, turtles, and more.

The best things to do in Riviera Maya: ancient ruins, magical caverns and tree-top adventures

Extending across the northernmost tip of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is an 83-mile sweep of coastline running from the south of Cancún all the way to the Belize border.

The tourist corridor is a magnet for sun-seeking travelers with its powder-puff white sand beaches, legendary ruins, and the world’s second-largest coral reef. What makes the Riviera Maya all the more appealing is that it’s a year-round destination – although the best time to visit is between February and June when temperatures are mild and crowds thin out.

Beyond the sparkling strands, the Riviera Maya entices with an impressive lineup of well-preserved Maya ruins, world-class dive sites, and fun-filled cenotes (natural swimming holes) . Let’s just say you won’t ever run out of things to do. But if you don’t know where to start, we’ve handpicked the best things to do in Riviera Maya – including both quintessential must-dos and unusual experiences for those who like to stray off the well-trodden trail.

Time travel at the Tulum ruins

Ranked high as one of the most prominent ruins in Mexico , Tulum is a great place to start your Riviera Maya journey. The Tulum ruins are perched on the top of rocky cliffs, high above the azure waters of the Caribbean – an uncommon location for an ancient Maya city. With evidence of habitation dating back as far as 564 CE, Tulum's heyday as a Maya city was in the 1200s and it has withstood the ravages of time and retained its grid-like layout, main structures, and a strong sense of history in every corner.

The compact archaeological site can be seen in a couple of hours; aim to get here before the tour groups arrive at 11 am and bring a swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the inviting water beneath the ruins. There is very little shade at the ruins and the opportunity to cool off in the sea is most welcome. Start with the waterfront temples and meander clockwise through the site – the real prize is the view that awaits along the cliff-edge trail of the Castillo, the tallest structure in Tulum, backed by cobalt waters and a spiny-tailed iguana or two.

Get a digital experience at Mystika Tulum

After exploring the Tulum ruins, make a stop at the new-age interactive digital museum, Mystika Tulum . It delivers a one-of-a-kind sensory experience designed to take you on a journey through the Maya cosmology through multi-sensorial rooms and installations. The venue is modest, and the entrance fee is higher than local museums, but it captures your imagination like no other, with outstanding visuals that both adults and kids will appreciate. This gallery is the brainchild of Pepe Soho, one of the most celebrated photographers in Mexico.

Float in the ancient Maya canals at Sian Ka’an

One of the most biodiverse places in the world, Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an is a 1.3 million-acre reserve of mangroves, savannahs, spearmint lagoons, and virgin beaches. Just south of Tulum, this patch of wilderness is the largest protected area on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and an eco traveler’s dream come true. The majority of the Sian Ka’an is out-of-bounds, and only a fraction is designated for sustainable eco-tourism.

Sian Ka’an is best explored on a guided tour, as the rugged trails and waterways are challenging to traverse on your own. Maya-run Community Tours Sian Ka'an runs kayak tours through the lagoons and birdwatching tours that directly benefit the local community. While drifting down canals dug by the Mayas centuries earlier, try to spot giant land crabs and manatees, and listen out for howler monkeys.

Swim in a cavern

Underneath the lush jungles of the Yucatán Peninsula lies a secret underworld of turquoise pools and mystical caves. Cenotes were revered by the Mayan civilization and used as a portal to communicate with the gods. Today, you can see why these underground caverns played a pivotal role in the Maya world.

In the crisp mineral-rich water of Cenote Dos Ojos , you’ll get the chance to weave through narrow passages and swim between illuminated stalactites and stalagmites. What you’re seeing is just a fragment of the world's largest underwater cave systems – book a guided snorkeling tour run by the local Maya community or a scuba dive session if you’d like to venture deeper into the cave system.

The trio of cenotes near Playa del Carmen tends to receive fewer visitors: Azul, Cristalino, and Eden are all open-air cenotes with clear-as-glass water and skin-nibbling tropical fish darting around. They’re great for people of all ages – adventurous adults can dive off mini cliffs into the water, kids can wade in the shallow pools or meander along the jungle paths, and seniors have plenty of space for a picnic.

Step back in time at Punta Allen

Located at the end of the Boca Paila Peninsula, the remote fishing village of Punta Allen gives a glimpse of how the Riviera Maya used to be. The picture-perfect beaches are empty except for a few stray dogs and a fisherman or two. A sandy main drag cuts through the sleepy pueblo , lined by crumbling wooden houses, simple loncherias (eateries), and grocery stores.

Getting here is not easy: even though it’s just 25 miles (40km) from the Sian Ka'an entrance, most people take at least two hours to traverse the bumpy dirt track to Punta Allen. But the village is well worth the arduous journey for its low-key atmosphere, traffic-free tranquility, and absence of mass tourism.

Rise early for a dolphin-watching trip or go snorkeling over the technicolored reef. After that, join the village's seniors on a fishing trip, and end the night under the starry skies in a bell tent at Hotel Cielo y Selva .

Swim in the magic waters of Laguna Bacalar

For those keen on veering off the beaten path, we’ll let you in on a secret: Laguna Bacalar is a quiet, little-known lake close to the border of Belize, with inviting spearmint water, stromatolite-rimmed shores, and overwater hammocks. Nicknamed Laguna de Siete Colores (lagoon of seven colors), the water alternates between light turquoise and dark indigo.

To explore the lagoon, base yourself in Bacalar town, just two hours from Tulum by car. The village appeals more to indie travelers than the average package tourist, with a surprisingly good selection of contemporary cafes and food trucks. Rent a kayak or join a boat tour to see the 38-mile-long (60km) stretch of water, making stops at the Canal de los Piratas , a channel that used to be plundered by pirates, and Cenote Cristalino , fringed by ancient pancake-like rocks known as stromatolites.

Watch the sunrise on a SUP

There’s no better time to take to the waters of the Riviera Maya than at sunrise. At this golden hour, the water is as smooth as glass, and the beach is empty save for a few other early birds. The usual raucous atmosphere of Playa del Carmen is gone, and in its place is a soothing silence punctuated by the sound of lapping waves and the squawks of seagulls overhead.

Paddleboarding at sunrise is an extraordinary experience, even for SUP (stand-up paddleboard) enthusiasts. Aloha Paddle Club organizes guided sunrise SUP sessions daily at Inti Beach, in the center of Playa del Carmen. Book in advance as these sessions are popular.

Snorkel with turtles in Akumal

Akumal is no longer a secret, but its swimmable lagoon remains the best place to snorkel with turtles in the Riviera Maya. The U-shaped bay and seagrass draw in turtles by the droves, with the coral reef protecting everything inside the bay. Because of the reef, the water here is always clear and calm – perfect conditions for snorkeling. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive eagle ray swimming in the seagrass meadow.

To swim in the protected marine reserve, joining a guided snorkeling tour is mandatory. Snorkeling gear and life safety vests are included. Those with young kids can also sign up for a snorkel excursion and marine biology class here with We Love the Sea .

Fly over the jungles

Active travelers rejoice: the Ruta de Cenotes, just 30 minutes south of Cancún, is a vast expanse of tropical forest that plays host to several eco-adventure parks. These joints, complete with zip line circuits, jungle trails, and cenotes, promise adults and children alike a thrilling good time – with all the safety measures in place.

Selvática is outfitted with 10 different zip lines, flying fox circuits, and even a bungee swing. You can also choose to hop on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) or a 4x4 buggy and trundle through the bush, though kids under 8 are not allowed on them for safety reasons. Cenotes Zapote is home to four different cenotes - including one with prehistoric sloth fossils. Each is equipped with its own zip line that whisk you through the wilderness.

Learn to surf at Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras is one of the best surfing beaches in the Riviera Maya, thanks to the perfect swells and water conditions. The beach is protected by seawalls, in a natural curve away from the open ocean.

Book yourself and your kids on fun, interactive lessons run by Nohoch Surf School . Their mini surf camps get raving reviews from little ones aged 4 to 12. If you’re already a surfer, the school has an excellent selection of boards that you can rent.

Explore Isla Cozumel on a Jeep

Across the bay from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel makes for an easy island escape with its low-key atmosphere and rugged, empty beaches. The best way to explore the 30-mile (48 km) long island is to hire a jeep or buggy as most of the island is covered by lush tropical forests, nature reserves, and empty beaches.

Head straight to the Punta Sur Ecological Park at the southern tip of the island – this natural reserve sprawls across 2500 acres of lagoon systems, tropical rainforests, and wild beaches. See the Maya ruin El Caracol, cruise the saltwater lagoon and spot crocodiles, then climb the 133 steps onto the top of the Celarain Lighthouse.

Get artsy in SFER IK

A contemporary art museum constructed mainly out of bejuco (an endemic wood that resembles vine), SFER IK (pronounced spheric) is a work of art in itself. Built using traditional techniques by Maya artisans, the structure was designed to blend in perfectly with the lush jungles of Tulum.

Wander barefoot through the curving corridor and bridges made of twisted vine-like wood and admire the permanent art collection created by renowned artists such as Ernesto Neto and Artur Lescher. Circular windows open out to the dense tropical forest surrounding you, with the sound of the waves in the not-so-far distance – this spot truly showcases how nature and art intertwine in the Riviera Maya.

Cleanse your soul at a temazcal

The Riviera Maya may have developed rapidly over the past decades due to tourism – but its rich Maya culture and traditions remain. An interesting Maya ritual that’s still practiced today is the temazcal , a pre-Colombian purification ceremony believed to cleanse your soul and rid you of illnesses.

A Maya leader leads the rite, guiding you into a dome-shaped sweat house fired up by steaming volcanic rocks, before beating you with corn husks. In the boiling heat, it’s hardly a relaxing experience, but keep your cool and you might just leave rejuvenated and balanced. Yaax Healing Sanctuary runs temazcal ceremonies at full moon led by a Maya healer.

The company’s Riviera Maya adventure parks are known for their water slides, zip lines, rafting and floating, cenotes (limestone sinkholes with pool-like openings), and cultural programming. As of 2017, Grupo Xcaret is offering its finest at all-inclusive resorts, too.

Its flagship all-inclusive resort, Hotel Xcaret Mexico , is an all-suite, family-friendly option that includes access to its parks. Like at all Mexico all-inclusive resorts , the suites are situated so you can jump into the private pools directly from your terrace, or book in Casa Fuego, the resort’s dedicated adults-only resort area, which boasts its own restaurant, too.

Dining options are plentiful, with 11 restaurants, including ultra-modern Ha’ (led by Michelin-starred Mexican Chef Carlos Gaytán), romantic cave dining at Las Cuevas, and an entirely vegan menu at Bio. One of the first things you'll notice when you're planning your trip to Mexico's Caribbean coast is that the region seems to have quite a few other names, such as the Yucatan Peninsula , Quintana Roo and the Mayan Riviera .

It can be quite confusing if you're new to Mexico until you have a chance to wrap your head around the area's unique geography and understand the variety of atmospheres and activities on offer along the coast for different types of holidaymakers.

Mexico is a vast country; it's fifteen times bigger than the UK. Unless you're off to explore Mexico City or one of the handfuls of popular inland destinations, you'll find the main resorts in Mexico are understandably sprinkled along the country's beautiful coastline.

If you're swimming in the sea at one of the glitzy resorts in the west of Mexico (think Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta ), you'll be in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico's Pacific coast * .

However, if you've decided to holiday on the Caribbean side, you'll be on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, that's the bit that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico.

This is home to two different Mexican states: Yucatan (which actually has its own northern beaches called the Emerald Coast ) and Quintana Roo , home to the entire length of Mexico's Caribbean coastline.

It's often called the Mayan Riviera because of its historical connections with the ancient Mayan people and many excursions on offer here focus on exploring Mayan civilisation.

There's also a newer tourist region a little further south along Mexico's Caribbean coast towards the Belize border known as the Costa Maya ; this includes natural wonders such as the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve making it perfect for eco-lovers.

Which resort is right for you?

Most of the famous places you've heard of in this part of Mexico are strung in a line down the eastern stretch of shore. From Puerto Morelos to Tulum , these include Playa del Carmen , Cancun and Akumal Beach .

Cancun, at the northern tip of the peninsula, is the jumping-off point for almost all new arrivals heading to the Caribbean coast and is the second most popular place to fly into in Mexico after the capital city.

Most transfers drive down Highway 307, which also serves the palatial all-inclusive beachfront resorts that enjoy private stretches of sand, and this same road goes all the way to Belize.

While Cancun * is the location of many of Mexico's biggest resorts the city is technically not part of the Mayan Riviera itself and has a slightly different vibe. It's a large and lively place where as well the fantastic beaches, clubs, bars, restaurants and shops are a big draw.

Cancun has a reputation for being the coast's party town and the restaurant scene undoubtedly serves up some of the best and most diverse cuisines in the entire country but you're equally likely to enjoy a casual taco in a low-key cantina.

Activity seekers and nature lovers are also in for a treat; you can try every type of water sport off the coast here as well as golfing, horse-riding and wildlife encounters. Plus, there are plenty of day trips to places like Isla Mujeres * and Isla Holbox * .

Puerto Morelos

Lots of famous holiday resorts around the world started life as laid-back fishing villages but Puerto Morelos * still feels very much like a quaint and sleepy small town to this day.

Puerto Morelos plays host to a few small hotels and yoga retreats, and is popular with off-the-beaten-track tourists but still within a short drive of all the big resorts.

This gives you the best of both worlds, especially if you're here in Mexico for the stunning sea and the white sand as opposed to the shopping.

Playa del Carmen

A perfect option for those who seek the nightlife of Cancun but also crave a hint of the fishing village vibe, Playa del Carmen * (or just Playa, as it is affectionately known) is an ideal middle ground and a classic holiday resort with everything on offer.

As well as the bustling pedestrianised strip of Fifth Avenue with all the souvenir shops and boutiques you could wish for, there's a long beach backed by bars and restaurants.

For marine life enthusiasts, it is very much worth a look: one of the best places in the world to swim with turtles is at Akumal Beach (it means 'place of the turtles'), which is just outside Playa del Carmen on the way to Tulum.

Tulum has carved a special niche for itself when it comes to attracting discerning tourists to the Mayan Riviera. What was once a 2 km stretch of beach famed for its archaeological ruins has become one of the hippest places to holiday in the entire region.

Just because it's cool doesn't mean it has lost the laid-back vibe. Tulum * is the alternative choice for a young and fashionable crowd; think yoga retreats and celebrity visitors who enjoy Tulum's sustainable emphasis.

Tulum's beautiful white powder sands are idyllic but there are strong currents in the sea around this area so watch out with little ones. Luckily, you're never far away from a cenote; these natural lagoons are dotted around Mexico's Caribbean coast and make swimming snorkelling or diving an absolute delight.

• Voltage - most of the coast runs on 110v so many European appliances may need a converter - you should investigate before your trip unless you have dual voltage appliances (110-220v)
• Infrastructure - this area has a safe and modern road network, good reliable electricity supply and excellent phone and internet service meaning you can enjoy a beach holiday but still have all your mod cons.

When to visit

Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has a truly tropical climate with daytime maximum temperatures ranging from the high twenties in winter to the low thirties in summer, and a sea that is always warm (between 26°C to 29°C).

Rainfall is at its highest between June and October, peaking in September, though with temperatures in the low thirties you may be ok with a passing downpour.

There is still a lot of sunshine during this period, never fewer than six hours per day on average, which is partly because much of the rain falls during the night.

Although this part of Mexico makes a wonderful holiday destination all year round, there is a marked difference between winter and summer weatherwise, which is to do with how heat and humidity affects conditions.

While there's no great leap in temperature from 28°C in winter and 33°C in summer, when paired with the different levels of heat and humidity (moderate in winter; very high in summer), the picture changes significantly and has a greater effect on how it feels.

Typically, winters are so popular because they're dry and hot without being too hot, while summer can feel more oppressive and see more rainfall.

However, don't be put off visiting in summer, it's just important to know the difference - you can sometimes find the best deals on holidays to Mexico's Caribbean coast during the summer months.

Mexico or Caribbean: Which Destination is Better to Visit?

If you’re trying to decide between Mexico and the Caribbean for your next holiday, then the choice isn’t going to be easy. The first is a large, Latin American country with a diverse landscape, miles of amazing coastline, tasty food, and tequila. The second offers picture-perfect, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear aqua under the scorching sun.

But, despite many differences, there are also some similarities. Both Mexico and the Caribbean have access to the Caribbean Sea that is known for its pristine waters. But, in Mexico, there is also the wilder Pacific coast, along with mountains and charming colonial towns.

In this guide, we’ve looked at different aspects of these two destinations, from beaches and things to do to value for money and ease of travel. It should help you decide which is better this year, Mexico or the Caribbean?

Mexico or Caribbean: Getting there

Traveling to both Mexico and the Caribbean islands is pretty easy and you shouldn’t find it hard to get to either of these destinations. However, there is no question that Mexico, being a large country, has more travel options available.

By far the easiest way to get into Mexico is by flying. The largest international airport, located in Mexico City, offers international connections with many major hubs around the globe and lots of cheap, direct connections with airports all over the US. The second-largest airport in the country is in Cancun, the gateway to the popular Quintana Roo and Yucatan states. It’s also possible to drive into Mexico from the US but that can be a lengthy (and potentially dangerous) journey.

Getting into the Caribbean isn’t too difficult either. You can fly into most islands directly from the US, Canada, and Europe. But those are often charter flights, mainly aimed at package holidaymakers. And that means they are more likely to be pricey. That said, there are deals to be had there, especially for flexible travelers. And it’s certainly worth forking out to enjoy the sugar sands of these paradise islands if that’s what you have your heart set on.

Mexico or Caribbean: Beaches

From the pristine, white-sand bays and turquoise waters of the Caribbean coast to golden sands under the palm trees and glassy waves of the Pacific, there are plenty of amazing beaches in Mexico . The country has access to the Pacific Ocean on one side and to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Some of the best beach destinations in Mexico include:

• Tulum (Quintana Roo) – A chilled town on the stunning Yucatan Peninsula. The white sands and mellow turquoise waters are what this place is all about. There are lots of beach bars and bamboo shacks that give this place a less resort-like feel than the nearby Cancun .
• Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco) – A resort town in the heart of the beautiful Bahia de Banderas. Head south to enjoy the unspoiled coves and beaches as you emerge from the tropical forest. The bay protects this coast from the powerful Pacific waves, so it’s a great place for swimming.
• Playa del Carmen (Quintana Roo) – A popular resort town with palm-lined beaches and coral reefs. There are lots of hotels, bars and restaurants behind the beach. It’s the gateway to Cozumel .
• Cabo San Lucas (Baja California Sur) – A beach resort town at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. It’s famous for the rugged cliffs and arches rising from the sea.
• Zihuatanejo (Guerrero) – Once a quiet fishing village, made popular by the Shawshank Redemption’s final scenes.

But it’s the Caribbean that is world-famous for its pristine beaches. The endless powder-white sand bays and picture-perfect turquoise seas are what defines the Caribbean islands . There are so many amazing beaches out there that it’s not an easy task to pick a few, but some of our favorite ones include:

• Shoal Bay Beach (Anguilla) – If you’re looking for that ultimate postcard beach then Shoal Bay in Anguilla is the place to go. With sands as white as sugar and crystal-clear turquoise waters, this beach is something out of this world.
• Eagle Beach (Aruba) – One of the best beaches in the region is Aruba’s Eagle Beach. Miles of white sands and azure aqua are the things you can expect from this popular honeymoon destination.
• Seven Mile Beach (Grand Cayman) – Yet another picture-perfect white sand beach in the Caribbean. As the name suggests, this beach stretches for nearly seven long miles along shallow warm waters. This is where the most luxury resorts in the region are located. 
• Grace Bay (Turks and Caicos) – Boastibg soft, sugar sands with the water clearer than that of a swimming pool, Grace Bay beach has calm seas ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Although this beach is very popular, it’s never overcrowded.

Mexico is a huge country that has plenty of fun activities on offer. Whether you want to visit the Mayan ruins, surf, dive, hike, or just laze on the beach there are things for everyone in this beautiful Latin American country. Some of the best activities in Mexico include:

• Visiting Pre-Columbian Cities – The most famous Mayan ruins in the country are in Chichén Itzá ,with the striking step pyramid dominating the site. But that is not the only place where you can explore pre-Columbian ruins. Other places include San Juan Teotihuacán near Mexico City, Zona Arqueológica Palenque, and Tulum Archaeological Zone.
• Visiting Monarch Butterfly Reserve (Michoacán) – Every year the beautiful monarch butterflies visit the rugged forested mountains of the reserve in masses. The best time to see the butterflies is in spring.
• Climbing Pico de Orizaba – There are nearly fifty active volcanos in Mexico with the highest one rising over 5,600m above sea level. Pico de Orizaba is the highest mountain in Mexico and the third highest in North America. To hike this sleeping giant requires major preparation and good fitness but those that take on this amazing journey will be rewarded with breathtaking views.
• Tasting tequila – Mexico is the land of tequila and the best place on Earth to taste this alcoholic beverage. Take the tequila train to the home of this spirit in Jalisco and try some of the world’s best tequilas straight from the distilleries.
• Visiting Hierve el Agua (Oaxaca) – This is a natural rock formation that resembles a waterfall. It’s located around 70km away from Oaxaca City.

But what is there to do in the Caribbean? The obvious answer is to enjoy some of the most amazing beaches on Earth. But it isn’t only about soaking in the sun. There are plenty of other fun things to do in the Caribbean. Some of the top activities include:

• Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest (Puerto Rico) – Green tropical flora, gurgling waterfalls, and refreshing rivers are the things you can enjoy while hiking in Puerto Rico’s only rainforest. There are plenty of hiking trails for serious walkers and casual strollers of all sorts.
• Exploring Pigeon Island National Park (St Lucia) – A forested cape at the northern top of St Lucia. There are plenty of walking trails and 18th-century military forts and ruins around the park. You can enjoy beautiful views of Martinique from the park’s two peaks. 
• Enjoying the Baths of Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands) – Located in the Baths National Park on the north shores of Virgin Gorda island are these incredible beach rock formations. Two granite boulders create sheltered sea pools. 
• Trying Jerk Chicken in Jamaica – Jamaican jerk is an iconic Caribbean treat that every meat eater should try. Jamaica is the best place to try this spicy grilled staple.  

Mexico or Caribbean: Nightlife

Like most Latinos, Mexicans are lively and love to have a good time. And of course, one of the things that Mexico is famous for is tequila! With this combination, you can rest assured that Mexico enjoys vibrant nightlife and plenty of fiestas all year round. In spring, hordes of college breakers head to Mexican coastal resorts to party. Some of the best destinations in the country for that are:

• Mexico City – The capital is known for its established nightlife scene. From late-night dance venues in Roma-Condesa through to hipster breweries in Juarez, bohemian art clubs in Zona Rosa and cocktail bars in Polanco, there are party options for everyone.
• Puerto Vallarta – As the sun sets Puerto Vallarta wakes up. The cocktails are mixed in the numerous seafront venues and the DJs play sets in many of the town’s nightclubs.
• Cancun – A popular holiday destination on the Yucatan peninsula known for its vibrant party scene. It’s popular with American spring breakers who seek all-night raves that don’t stop till the sun comes up. The most popular area to party there is Punta Cancun, otherwise known as the party zone.
• Guadalajara – The second largest city in Mexico in the state of Jalisco is a dynamic hub with a great nightlife scene. The best area for drinking here is Chapultepec Avenue and Zapopan.
• Acapulco – It was once the destination for the rich, but these days Acapulco is more famous for its nightlife than the beaches. With loads of clubs, bars, and discos, this place has a pretty hefty party scene.

Caribbean nightlife is generally more chilled than that of Mexico. It’s more about drinking rum in beach bars while dancing to live reggae tunes. But that isn’t the only way to party in the Caribbean . There are plenty of drinking cruises, large music clubs, and casinos too. Some of the best places to enjoy the nightlife in the Caribbean are:

• San Juan (Puerto Rico) – Dancing in until dawn in live-music bars and drinking in several bars, lounges, and rooftop joints, these are the things you can expect in lively San Juan.
• Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) – This is the largest city in the Caribbean that is known for its parties long after the sun goes down. There are loads of bars, cafes, clubs, and discos all around the city, especially in Zona Colonial.
• Barbados – It’s the birthplace of rum. And with that, you can rest assured that there are plenty of places to enjoy it. The best place to party in Barbados is in St Lawrence Gap.
• Aruba – Beachfront lounges, lively cocktail bars, clubs, and casinos are plentiful in Aruba, especially in north Oranjestad.
• Jamaica – Wherever you go in Jamaica, there is music. The sounds of reggae are always about and there are plenty of places to enjoy it. The best nightlife is in Montego Bay and Kingston.

Mexico or Caribbean: Prices

The cost of your trip to Mexico will depend on what you do and where you stay, but generally, Mexico is quite affordable. Hotels can be pricey if you choose to stay in glitzy beachfront resorts in Cabo or luxury hotels in the capital , but there are plenty of budget options out there. And with the cost for tacos as little as 50 cents, you can be sure that a trip to Mexico isn’t likely to break the bank. Getting around the country isn’t too expensive either.

The Caribbean, however, is known for its luxury resorts and beachfront venues that come at a price. That isn’t the case with every island, but generally, a trip to the Caribbean is going to cost you more than one to Mexico. Barbados is the priciest of all, with average daily costs sitting at $300 per person. Other islands that are considered expensive are Antigua and Barbuda, Curacao, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, and Aruba. The most budget-friendly Caribbean islands are Cuba and Haiti, with the average daily cost ten times lower than in Barbados.

Mexico or Caribbean: The Conclusion

Although the Caribbean lures with its picture-perfect beaches that are hard to beat, it is Mexico that comes on top in most categories. With its rich culture and history, diverse landscape, and more affordable lifestyle, we think that Mexico is overall a more interesting travel destination. But that said, there is no question that the Caribbean is incredibly beautiful, though it might come at a price.

MICHELIN Keys Travel Mexico

A sweltering canvas sweat lodge isn’t where you typically picture a MICHELIN Inspector. But on one summer afternoon, during my anonymous stay at Be Tulum — a hotel my colleagues and I recently awarded One Key in Mexico — it’s where I was, finding a brief moment of enlightenment through a distinct struggle to breathe. As Inspectors learn every day in our work, luxury comes in many forms. I emerged from this traditional temazcal ceremony, my face streaked in mud and perspiration, with my newest appreciation yet of that concept. In Tulum, tourists usually find themselves in either the main town or the zona hotelera on the beachfront. Most of our Key hotels break that mold. In Wakax (One Key), you stay in a private, hacienda-style compound with (and this is exceedingly rare) its own private cenote and lagoon. Casa Chable (Two Keys) is even more outside the norm. That one’s on a private estate, in the far-off Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a boat ride away through a sparkling, crocodile-filled lagoon. When you reach its thin peninsula, you can watch the sunrise from one beach and the sunset from another. To be frank, Be Tulum is not in such rarefied air. It is simply the very best version of very typical Tulum. There are what seem like hundreds of hotels on this strip of town on the beachfront, many shoulder to shoulder. Be Tulum is one of them: earning its Key through sheer quality and execution. My suite was as close to the ocean as possible without waking up wet, its style a match for the rest of the mini-resort’s gorgeous, dark, beach-chic aesthetic. A thatched-style ceiling and wooden accent wall warmed cool concrete floors and stone walls, with books and figurines (what caught my eye: a pregnant clay warrior) to keep the guest’s visual interest. Other rooms are set further back between paths cut through the hotel’s own little jungle. Some sport one of Tulum’s most common amenities, the private plunge pool.

The hotel has several restaurants: one for traditional Mexican food, one for seafood or grilling on the beach, as well as a terrace and bar, but is blessed too by its location. My colleagues and I found three spots to include in the MICHELIN selection just minutes from Be Tulum, spots that share in its same jungle aesthetic while serving a variety of creative dishes. And like so many in Tulum, Be avoids homogenization into the wider global luxury scene by mixing its glitzier aesthetic with the area’s more spiritual attractions. It’s how I found myself sweating bullets in that canvas tent. Other experiences are less intensely physical: cacao ceremonies, pranic meditation, and vinyasa yoga. Many of these activities take place at Be Tulum’s larger sister hotel, Nomade , just next door. It’s another way that Be Tulum finds a magic formula. Its own campus is small and intimate (not to mention child-free). With the connection to Nomade, guests lose nothing in terms of amenities. Speaking of which. A beautiful, wood-platformed, indoor/outdoor spa complex is just across the street, bookable through a friendly concierge over Whatsapp, and shared by tiny frogs inching their way along the deck. Despite the high-end amenities and the occasional influencer-sighting, Be can feel pleasantly down to earth. Visiting hotels throughout the city, my colleagues and I noticed a distinct lack of pretension in hotel staff. Service was rarely overbearing, sometimes downright lax. On my visit to Be, two resident dogs made their friendly presence known, only haphazardly shooed away by servers when they approached the outdoor restaurant. That is among the charms of the location: a frankly chill vibe I found comforting about luxury in Tulum. Like all the best parts of this town, Be has it in spades.
