Travel tips for Sicily trips

During your free time on one of our Sicily trips you can:

  • Stroll along Corso Umberto in Taormina.  This is the area’s main shopping street, where you’ll find many shops, cafes, and restaurants. A stop in Piazza IX Aprile offers more stunning sea views. Check out our guide for how to spend  free time in Taormina .
  • Stop by the Scala dei Turchi near Agrigento.  The Stair of the Turks is a unique geological formation on the seaside, where white cliffs create a stunning contrast with the azure water.
  • Visit the village of Noto.  Along with its multidimensional culture that ties back to Greek, Roman, Arabic, and Norman influence, an earthquake that struck in 1693 further molded Noto’s intricate history. As you stroll down Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main street, you’ll see the Baroque style that designers added during its reconstruction. The intricate architecture has earned the village and its cathedral UNESCO status. Learn more about it in our  Noto excursion spotlight .
  • Explore the Island of Ortygia.  This island is the historic center of Syracuse, known for its picturesque and quiet atmosphere. You can even visit the Cathedral of Syracuse in the main square or wander through the small streets along the waterfront.
  • Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo.  Palermo’s Catacombs feature years of incredibly preserved history. These catacombs became a symbol of status, where local luminaries would ask to be preserved in certain clothes, or even have their clothes changed at regular intervals. Relatives would even visit to pray for the deceased and to maintain the body in presentable condition.

Looking for more interesting things to do on our Sicily tour packages? Read our  Sicily Travel Guide .

If you’re planning a trip to Sicily, these are the must-visit spots:

  • Greek Theater in Syracuse.  Sicily’s rich history can be seen through this incredibly well-preserved site, which is still used for performances today.
  • Ear of Dionysius in Syracuse.  Under the theater, you’ll be able to visit the Ear of Dionysius and learn about its legends while marveling at the ancient stone caves around you.
  • Ballarò Market in Palermo.  This is a favorite on all of our Sicily tours. You’ll find some of the best street food in Italy here—as well as unique architecture influenced by Arab and Norman rule.
  • Experience Mount Etna.  Sicily’s second-largest city, Catania, sits at the foot of Mount Etna, an active volcano. Here, you can enjoy views of the mountain from afar or get a closer look by venturing all the way to the summit. In the winter, you may have the unique opportunity to witness snowfall, volcanic smoke, and the Mediterranean Sea all at once.
  • Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.  Here, you’ll find incredibly preserved Greek temples surrounded by fields and almond trees. If you go on one of our guided tours to Sicily in March, you’ll get to experience Agrigento’s Almond Blossom Festival, which marks the beginning of spring. See the pink and white almond blossoms and sing and dance within the explosion of colors, music, and costumes.

There is no bad time to travel on one of our Sicily tours! Here’s what you’ll find in each season:

  • Spring :  While Sicily can sometimes see spring rain, don’t let this discourage you from considering Sicily tours during the off-season. You’ll see fields of wildflowers divided by low, hand-built stone walls as you travel between cities. And with fewer crowds, it’s a great time to visit any of Sicily’s outdoor archeological sites. In May, Noto also blankets its city’s streets with flowers to celebrate the Baroque Spring Festival.
  • Summer : The Mediterranean is a popular summer destination. Sicily’s coastal cities offer plenty of opportunities to relax on some truly unique beaches.
  • Fall : This is also considered the off-season for Sicily guided tours. If you visit in October,  you’ll arrive in time for olive harvest season. And with Sicily’s numerous olive groves, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for an olive oil tasting. The cooler weather is also perfect for hiking up Mount Etna.
  • Winter : Apart from fewer crowds, lower prices, and cooler weather, winter trips to Sicily are simply magical! You’ll still be able to swim in the Mediterranean, but you might even get to see some snow—especially on Mount Etna. You can even ski on the active volcano!

Summer trips to Sicily call for lighter clothing, while off-season travel requires packing layers. Even Sicily’s coastal cities can get quite hot, so you’ll want to be prepared for beach weather. Read our  Sicily Travel Guide  for a more detailed list of what to pack for your trip.

One of the best things to do on any trip to Sicily is eat the incredible food! Here are some must-try dishes:

  • All the seafood . It’s what this island is known for! Explore the fish markets or order any dish in any restaurant for the freshest seafood.
  • Gelato . Okay, it’s not a dish. But it could be, if you eat it during every meal on your trip!
  • Granita . This summertime shaved ice gelato is unique to Sicily. While you may find attempts to recreate it elsewhere in  Italy , an authentic Sicilian granita cannot be beat. It’s even sometimes eaten as a summer breakfast served with a brioche roll and fresh whipped cream!
  • Arancini . These cone-shaped, fried risotto snacks are a must-try in Sicily. They’re typically filled with ragù or prosciutto and cheese, and they’re absolutely delicious.
  • Pasta alla Norma . Native to Catania, this dish is known for a simple but exquisite combination of flavors. Eggplant, tomatoes, ricotta salata (salted, pressed ricotta cheese), and basil make for a perfect pasta dish.
  • Cannoli . You’ve definitely heard of these before, but you haven’t had a real one until you’ve tried one on our Sicily tours.
  • Orange salad . Peeled, sliced oranges are dressed with olive oil, salt, and pepper. It’s healthy, refreshing, and incredibly tasty.

The most important thing to know before any Sicily trip is to be prepared for a lot of walking—including hills. Sicily’s hills provide the most stunning views. Just remember to pack a couple pairs of sturdy, comfortable walking shoes, some sunscreen, and some water to keep hydrated!

Lastly, don’t forget about siestas! Most shops and restaurants close down between 1pm and 5pm, so plan accordingly.

Secret Travels

Our Small Group Tours

Captivating sicily small group tour - 12 days/11 nights, discover the secrets of sicily.

Experience authentic Sicilian lifestyle and culture with our small group tour. This tour allows you to fully immerse yourself in Sicily’s idyllic climate, from the stunning Mediterranean coasts and beaches to the fertile valleys and mountainous regions. Sicily has a diverse culture all its own, just waiting to be discovered.

Fall in love with the dramatic vistas that paint the perfect backdrop as we travel from region to region, tasting locally grown authentic Sicilian cuisine. Our food is steeped in centuries of history and kept alive today, with many local seafood and vegetable markets prospering. This abundance of in-season produce allows the chefs and home cooks of Sicily to create some truly dynamic dishes. Learn to cook meals like Caponata or a fresh Pasta alla Norma, perfectly paired with a regional wine that will delight your senses. Homemade treats like rich cannoli and pistachio pastries are a must for dessert.

Sicily boasts 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites and hundreds of archaeological treasures like the Byzantine mosaics in the cathedral of Monreale and the 5th-century ruins of Siracusa. See a bit of Greece in Italy at the Valley of the Temples, a cluster of Greek temple ruins that will transport you back in time. On this tour, there’s ample time to wander ornate churches, relax on scenic beaches, and soak in the Sicilian sun each day. Unique sites like these, a rich history, culture, and food accompanied by picturesque landscapes make Sicily “Italy’s best-kept secret.” This small group tour weaves these elements like a tapestry, along with some time to explore on your own to create an authentic Sicilian vacation and memories that will last a lifetime.

Tour Reviews

The best sicily tour.

Hello Aldo and Katrin,

Abigail Harman, my wife has recently emailed you telling you of our marvelous experiences on our recent ‘Secret Sicily’ tour. Basically, Abbe has stolen my thunder in that she has said pretty much what I was going to say. However, I have a few tributes to add.First and foremost, Ambra was a mazing. As Abbe says: always cheerful and absolutely full of the history and folklore of Sicily. She was often on her phone, when we were with local guides or fully occupied with something else; clearly, she was phoning ahead to make sure we had a seamless experience with hotels, guides, and buses. Which we did.But anyone can look good when things are going well; it’s when things fall apart that one can tell who are the professionals and who the amateurs. We had an issue with a bus breaking down which Ambra handled superbly. No fuss—no panic—just a smooth transition along with her ever-smiling face and capable demeanour. Without doubt she is a class act. We were very lucky to get her. You are very lucky to employ her. Whatever you do… don’t let her go.Secondly, the tour was very comprehensive in its coverage. I’m a writer and a historian. I have read, among other books on Sicily, John Julius Norwich’s ‘History of Sicily’ so I was anxious to see all the great historical sites—from the Phoenicians through to the Bourbon Kings—that he mentions. I reckon we saw them all—certainly, most of them. I had wanted to book a cultural tour of Sicily with Martin Randall, a British tour group, but they were fully booked. I’m glad now that they were as I reckon your tour covered almost as much as theirs—and we had so much more fun.Of course, we were lucky with the group: firstly, because not only were there so few of us (nine) but also because everyone in the group was a kind and caring individual. No one was loud; no one was selfish; no one wanted to dominate and be top dog. We had twelve days of very warm and smooth relations. We were collegiate yet also allowed each other space. The people you get on a group is, of course, luck… but we felt sorry for the big groups or 30 or more. We were like a family. There were too many excellent experiences for me to list them all, but I do want to highlight our last evening when we had a cookery class and dinner at Villa Britannia. I’m not a cook, and I didn’t go to Sicily for the food but for the history, so I was the worst at the food preparation—which amused everyone immensely. What made the evening memorable was the fact the Villa Britannia is next to the house rented by the great English writer D H Lawrence when he was in Taormina. Louisa Vittorio, has recently inherited the house and she showed us around the place—including the room where D H Lawrence wrote some of his most famous poems. It’s still pretty much as it was almost 100 years ago. For me that was a wonderful, spine-chilling experience. I may be able to help Louisa in a small way by putting her in touch with D H Laurence appreciation societies.I could keep going with this email, but I think I’ve said all I need to say. For Abbe and me the holiday was the experience of a lifetime. We’ve had some excellent historically themed holidays—Iran, and twice in Turkey but I think Secret Italia might just be the best one we’ve ever had.

So… thank you. And please thank Ambra when you are next in touch. Send her love and hugs from Abbe and me.

A tour of Sicily FAVOLOSO

Hello Aldo,

I’ve been in education my whole life- and yet my wife and I were both “wowed” by this wonderful trip.

First, the mix of activities- archaeological sites, churches and historical places was very good. However, the highlights of the tour focused on the real secrets of Sicily- the people. Our stay at the win ery (by Argimento) was nothing short of amazing. The same for the visit to Gambino Winery (home of my grandfather), the dinner with Rita and Susana, and the farewell dinner with Lucia. Bravo!

But the tour would not have been the same without Ambra. She is so knowledgeable about the history and culture of Sicily that we take away a deep appreciation for beautiful Sicily. What’s more, she went out of her way to make all the passengers comfortable. She was a true friend while we were here. I think there were tears all around when we said goodbye last night.

Also, we were very glad to take this tour and hopefully we have an opportunity to take another one.

A Wonderful Treat

This trip exceeded my expectations. Each destination was a gem, with so much to discover and learn from our guides along the way. Ambra, our guide, was brilliant in every way, taking care of the myriad details involved with utter transparency, care and charm. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for our group members. Our driver, Mario, was always prompt, careful, and attentive to comfort and safety. Sicily was the real star of the show. What a trip to savor. Grazie Aldo and Karen and the SecretItalia team.

So glad to have booked this tour. Our guide, Giuse, was knowledgeable about all things Sicily and ensured our transportation, hotels, and restaurants were smooth and top notch. Aldo was a good communicator before as and, always prompt.

A Great Tour of Sicily

We traveled with the same group that included Joe and Judi, who left a separate evaluation of the Sicily tour. My wife and I agree with Joe and Judi’s comments. Giusi was a phenomenal tour guide – always on top of everything and very helpful with ideas and planning. The meals arranged for the group on the tour were outstanding, and the tour pace was just right. We were able to see and experience a lot of Sicily but not feel pressed. This was very well balanced between touring, experiencing local culture and having time to ourselves. Hotels were all top notch. It is very apparent that Aldo and Katrin have taken close personal interest in making these tours very well-planned and fulfilling. We would definitely be enthusiastic about doing another tour with Secret Italy – extremely good value for the cost.

Next stop an hour east is Agrigento, home to the Valley of the Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will head first to settle into your accommodation at the intimate Fontes Episcopi agriturismo. Here you will enjoy a local cooking experience with a real Sicilian mamma and learn to make simple and authentic local dishes, before tucking into them. This evening you will visit the Valley of the Temples with your guide. The day culminates with a stop at a local home for some homemade food and wine.

Staircase in Ragusa, Sicily

You will journey east today through the Sicilian countryside to your next base, the tiny island of Ortigia. This one-kilometre square island forms the historic centre of Syracuse and is linked to the rest of the city via two small bridges. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to settle into your charming hotel and explore the cobbled streets teaming with shops and cafés on Ortigia.

Piazza Archimede, Syracuse

With your private guide today you will walk through the winding streets of Ortigia. You’ll visit the stunning Piazza del Duomo as well as the buzzing market area and learn about the island's historical heritage. Time to get active today and see the natural beauty of eastern Sicily with a guided walk through the Vendicari Nature Reserve. This reserve is the most visited in Sicily and certainly one of the most scenic. In addition to stunning landscapes, the reserve is a wildlife hotspot, particularly for bird species. Due to its location, many migratory birds stop here during their journey from Africa to Europe, species often seen include herons, egrets and flamingos. Loggerhead sea turtles are also native to the reserve, and they lay their eggs on the beaches. After your tour and perhaps a sea dip, if you wish, you will be transferred back to Ortigia.

With a resident mountain guide, you will have chance for a short walk to view more of the landscape on foot. After heading back down, it will be time for some lunch. The rich volcanic soils here make the slopes of Etna excellent for wine production. You will be taken to a local winery for a tasting lunch.
