The lodge was established in 1996 and has blossomed into a unique experience for anyone wanting to escape from the normal. After a recent change in management the site has been fully renovated to international standards. It is now one of the best places to stay while on a gorilla tour in Bwindi impenetrable National Park .

7 well sited self contained tented rooms – These self contained tents are built on the shores of the lake. They are constructed with a permanent stone bathroom at the rear and raised-decking supporting the vast tent in front. Each tent has its own private front porch where guests may spend a quiet evening.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge developed from Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite to one of the finest safari lodges in the country.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is located in an approximate location; just 300 meters from Nkuringo visitor’s reception , implicating the briefing point for your gorilla trekking experience is just 10-15 minutes away.

Rushaga sector briefing point is a 45 minutes drive from the lodge.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is one of the best luxury accommodation in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park .

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge has eight garden cottages, three villas and 1 family villa.

All the cottages were handcrafted with local materials to blend the surrounding environment. 

The eight cottages have en-suite facilities, a shared fireplace, and private balcony commanding spectacular views.

The 3 villas have 2 in one interconnecting bedrooms; each bedroom with private balcony and en-suite bathrooms, private terrace, private door and interconnecting door.

The villas are the best option for those traveling with friends or family.  There is also a family cottage with 2 bedrooms and shared balcony.

The restaurant serves homemade meals and freshly baked bread while the well stocked bar offers a wide variety of drinks to help you relax after a long journey or gorilla trekking tour .

The dining and main lounge offer stunning views of the Virunga Massif.

The SPA at the lodge is the perfect place for relaxation after a long day of trekking mountain gorillas.

The massage normally takes between 60 – 90 minutes and is done by well experienced masseuse.

The massage ends with some herbal tea and fruit or herbal infused water.

Activities at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

• Gorilla Trekking . Trekking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Forest is the primary reason why people visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The cost of gorilla trekking permits is $700 per person. Children under 15 years of age or adults with infectious diseases like flu will not be allowed to trek Uganda gorillas.
• Gorilla Habituation . Gorilla habituation can be described as the process of making mountain gorillas get used to human presence. This process normally takes a period of 2-3 years until gorillas undergo a mocking exercise and pass it. They are then availed for gorilla trekking activities. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is apparently the only gorilla park that offers tourists an opportunity to join rangers and researchers in a 4 hour daily gorilla habituation process .How to get there

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be accessed within 7 – 8 hours by road from Kampala City or you can use a standard charted flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrips .

You can also travel from Kigali to Bwindi National Park to access this amazing accommodation facility.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is one of the luxury lodges in Nkuringo Sector in Southern Bwindi. Located on the Nteko Ridge, this lodge overlooks Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is located on the Nteko Ridge overlooking Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Perched at an altitude of 2161 m above sea level, it is totally mosquito free and it enjoys superb views of the forested hill locally known as Nkuringo”, the Kashasha River Valley, the magnificent Virunga Volcanoes, the world-renowned Bwindi forest and the Great Albertine Rift Valley.

There are 12 individually hand-crafted cottages, each offering the tranquility of the rainforest, the atmosphere of a mountain chalet and the warm hospitality Ugandans are known for.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge prides itself on its green credentials and through its various initiatives including solar energy and rainwater harvesting proudly operates as a carbon neutral lodge.

The main areas of the lodge comprise of a cozy restaurant serving fantastic homemade meals and freshly baked bread, a bar and a coffee-shop with amazing views over the mountains beyond.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is situated in the heart of the Nkuringo local community and not only provides a fantastic base from which to go Mountain Gorilla Trekking and birdlife of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest but also allows its guests to experience the rich and vibrant culture of the communities that surround it.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge’s 12 rooms are split into 3 categories, the Virunga Terrace rooms, the Garden Cottages and the 2 Bedroom Villa.

​ The 6 Virunga Terrace rooms offer great value; they all have en-suite facilities, a front terrace and views over the magnificent Virunga Volcanoes.

The 4 Garden Cottage rooms are privately hidden away in the lush gardens. Each individually crafted cottage has a fireplace for the colder nights, is powered by solar and has a large veranda.

The 2 Bedrooms villa is ideal for families or groups of 4 people, each room is independent but the can be interconnecting. They are also joined by a large veranda with beautiful views overlooking Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Each room has a sitting area and fireplace for the colder night.

Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge – Bwindi Impenetrable N.P

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is a warm and rustic safari lodge south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . It is situated on a 7,000ft ridge overlooking the forest and Virunga Mountains.

The lodge is eco-friendly as it was built and designed with natural materials sourced from the community around the lodge. This includes papyrus for the ceiling and wood for the floors with a touch of volcanic rock.

At the highest point of the property sits a grand lounge building. It houses the dining, drinks, coffee bar, and craft shop spaces with expansive 360-degree views of the gorgeous Virungas. The building has interesting local artwork hanging on the walls and many artifacts to admire. The dining serves incredible homemade meals and freshly baked bread.

The lodge consists of eleven garden cottages, three luxury forest suites, and three family villas. All rooms have cozy beds, snug rugs, and en-suite facilities including a flush toilet, washbasin, and shower.

The rooms have spacious patios with scenic views of the beautiful landscapes. They are colorfully decorated with local carvings and printed fabrics. The forest suites have a private butler, as well as, exclusive room service.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is situated in the heart of the Nkuringo local community. Guests can experience the vibrant cultures of the villages surrounding the lodge. Its position is also a fantastic base from which to go Mountain Gorilla tracking, nature walking, hiking, and birding in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

For children under 15, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge offers a variety of activities with a babysitter since they are not permitted to track gorillas. This will keep them entertained at the lodge while you go gorilla trekking.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is located in the southwestern corner of Uganda in East Africa. The lodge sits on the Nteko Ridge overlooking the swath of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the two regions where the endangered mountain gorillas are heavily protected and can be seen by tourists.

Perched at an altitude of 2,161 meters (7,090 ft) above sea level, this area is totally mosquito free and enjoys superb views of the forested hill locally known as “Nkuringo”, the Kashasha River Valley, the magnificent Virunga Volcanoes, world-renowned Bwindi forest and the Great Albertine Rift Valley.​

Passport and Visa

Kindly note that all nationals require a visa to enter Uganda. The Uganda Visa fee is US$50 per person irrespective of adult, child or infant. Visas can only be obtained online using Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System . You can also obtain your visa in advance from the local Embassy. Alternatively, we can forward you our visa application form in advance, so you can fill it prior to your arrival and save some time at the local immigration desks. (One has to queue). Please also note that you require 2 empty pages in your passport for entry into Uganda.

If visiting Rwanda or Kenya as part of your trip extension, you can alternatively obtain a single East African Visa for Uganda/Rwanda and Kenya at a price of US$100 per person , a multiple entry visa valid for 90 days after arrival.

Medical Insurance

There is no national welfare scheme in Uganda and visitors are responsible for their own medical expenses. We recommend for our clients to have an emergency evacuation insurance, which we include in most quotations (pls. check your inclusions/exclusions). All clients are requested to inform us about:

Their overseas travel insurance details including:

• A contact person at home in case of any emergency
• Nationality
• Your birth date
• Your blood group

Whilst every care is taken of you and your property, we cannot be held responsible for any accidents, injury, or illness that you may incur or for any loss or damage to baggage. We therefore advise that you and your property be fully covered by your own insurance and it is advisable to have separate baggage and ticket insurance.

Emergency and Evacuation Insurance

We offer the above as an inclusion in most safaris (which is clearly mentioned) and if not included, you are free to purchase it through us. This is basically an insurance that is already included in most overseas insurances as they offer repatriation to your home country. Nkuringo Safaris has got Insurance cover by AMREF as a backup, evacuation takes place by air and is far more effective than the overseas insurance. You are transported by air from the point of emergency (the closest airstrip) to Nairobi (to a local well renowned hospital with good medical care).

The monetary unit is Ugandan Shillings ; there is no limit to the amount of currency that you bring into the country. Uganda is mostly a cash economy with few lodges accepting credit cards. There is no longer “exchange control” the rate of exchange varies between banks, foreign exchange bureaus and hotels. It is recommended that visitors do not change money on the black market, as they are more likely to receive a lower rate of exchange. There is an opportunity for tourists to change their Euros, USD Or GBP among other currency at entry points especially at Entebbe International Airport arrivals.

Drinking Water

The Ugandan taps do not flow with water safe enough to drink. Please buy bottled water with a sealed cap when travelling. At the lodge we provide safe drinking water in all rooms and lounges. We also encourage all our guests to travel with a water bottle that can be refilled when in need from our dining.

Please ensure that your baggage is packed in soft bags and should weigh no more than 15 to a maximum of 20 kgs.’ per person. It is possible to store luggage during the safari either at your hotel if you are returning thereafter your trip or in our offices. Most lodges have laundry facilities at an extra charge. On air safaris the maximum luggage allowance per person is 15 kgs.’ including hand luggage.

Clothing to Pack

You should note that you'll be visiting the jungle if you're headed to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, so pack in relation to African jungle lifestyle not trendy city apparel.

what you need to pack for your gorilla jungle hiking is:

• Sturdy hiking boots (ankle high),
• Additional footwear such as sports sneakers
• Long trousers due to the possible presence of safari ants in the forests (quick dry cotton trekking trousers are ideal)
• Long sleeved cotton shirt (the vegetation can be quite aggressive)
• Lightweight water-proof rain jacket and rain pants
• Rain poncho (this can also be rented at the UWA office or provided by Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge for those staying with us)
• Gardening gloves
• Warm Jacket for the cool evenings
• Sun screen cream
• Insect repellent
• Waterproof backpack for carrying water and packed lunch or your photography equipment

Your vehicle will be custom built and safari equipped 4WD Land cruiser, a pop-top van for budget safaris. Our vehicles have game viewing hatches / pop-up roofs or are open, are comfortable.

Communication

The outside world is of very little interest or consequence when on safari, but if there are urgent messages they should be sent to our office in Entebbe for onward transmission by E-mail/Tel.

At the lodge we do have Mobile and internet connection networks and it is very possible to call from a lodge / camp to your home country or for your cell phone to be used, switch to roaming to enjoy the Uganda mobile network. Internet at the lodge is available in the lounge all day at optimal speeds. The bush network may not be so fast like your city connection, but its good enough for you to send or receive your messages and connect to your social pages.

Electricity Voltage

Voltage throughout the East Africa is 220-240AC. Most safari vehicles have a cigarette lighter socket operating on a 12-volt system. Our safari vehicles have inverter so you can charge as you travel.

At the lodge we use the mains electricity grid with backup of solar and gas generator. We have electricity sockets in the lounge area, all rooms including the bathrooms. In In Uganda the power plugs and sockets are of type G. The standard voltage is 220-240 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. Please carry universal power plug adapters with a square 3-pin (English standard) option and sufficient batteries for your photography equipment.

Your full-board lodge booking includes meals and accommodation but not the activities outside the lodge . Make sure you carry or inform your travel agency to book for you and inform you of the extra activities you may want to pay for. If not paid in advance with your travel consultant , carry enough money to pay for activities outside the lodge . We recommend you carry some extra money for souvenirs that you may wish to purchase during your trip.

Photography

It is prohibited to take pictures of State houses, airports, military installations, police stations, government facilities, any border post, soldiers or police. Always seek advice from your driver/guide before taking pictures of tribes. Not everyone will agree to have their photograph taken randomly.

Although tipping is a safari tradition, it is never compulsory and should only be done if you have received good services. The staff very much appreciate receiving gratuity from our guests, because it is one way of assuring them they are doing a good job.

Most lodges have a staff tip box located at the reception, or a central location. We recommend a US$3 - $5 per client per day in a tip box. Tips left here will be divided amongest the porters and waiters and all other lodge staff. If you are particularly satisfied with assistance received from someone, a personal tip is also acceptable. However, driver/guides are always tipped separately.

As for driver/guides: we do recommend approx. US$20 PER DAY PER VEHICLE as a recommended guideline.

It is not acceptable for staff to ask you for a tip or for a present for their family to be sent home etc. and we would appreciate it if you reported any behavior of this sort.

Tomsk Oblast - Overview

Tomsk Oblast is a federal subject of Russia located in the southeast of the West Siberian Plain, part of the Siberian Federal District. Tomsk is the capital city of the region.

The population of Tomsk Oblast is about 1,068,300 (2022), the area - 314,391 sq. km.

History of Tomsk Oblast

The development of this region began in the late 16th - early 17th centuries. The oldest settlement in the Tomsk region is the village of Narym, founded in 1596.

The town of Tomsk was founded as a military fortress by the decree of Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604. It was one of the outposts of the development of Siberia.

From 1708 to 1782, Tomsk was part of the Siberian province. In 1804, the town became the center of a separate Tomsk province, which included the current territories of the Altai krai, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, East Kazakhstan, Tomsk regions and part of Krasnoyarsk krai.

In the 19th century, the growth of gold mining, smelting of metals, fur trade concentrated large capital in Tomsk, triggering a revival of trade. Important transport routes - the Moscow and Irkutsk tracts - passed through Tomsk.

In 1888, the first university beyond the Urals was opened in Tomsk, in 1900 - the Technological Institute, in 1901 - the first commercial school in Siberia, in 1902 - the Teachers’ Institute. By 1914, Tomsk was one of the 20 largest cities in the Russian Empire.

In 1925, the Tomsk Governorate was abolished and became part of the Siberian region. In the 1930s, Tomsk lost its administrative significance. In August 1944, the city became again a regional center.

During the Second World War, dozens of factories, educational, scientific, and cultural institutions were evacuated to Tomsk oblast and became the basis for the further development of the region in the postwar years.

In the 1950s, the first in the USSR nuclear center of the world level was created in Tomsk Oblast - the Siberian Chemical Combine. In the 1960s-1970s, oil production began on the territory of the region, a giant petrochemical plant was built - the Tomsk Petrochemical Combine.

Tomsk Oblast - Features

The length of the Tomsk region from north to south is about 600 km, from west to east - 780 km. Most of the territory is difficult to access because of taiga forests occupying about 60% of the region and marshes (28.9%). The Vasyugan swamp is one of the largest marshes in the world.

The climatic conditions of the southern and northern districts of the Tomsk region are markedly different. Almost the entire territory of the region is located within the taiga zone. The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in July is plus 24 degrees Celsius, in January - minus 16 degrees Celsius. The climate in the northern part of the region is more severe, winters are longer.

The largest cities and towns of Tomsk Oblast are Tomsk (570,800), Seversk (105,200), Strezhevoy (38,900), Asino (24,400), Kolpashevo (22,200). Lake Mirnoye located in Parabelsky district is the largest lake. The main river, the Ob, crosses the region diagonally from the southeast to the northwest, dividing it into two almost equal parts.

The main industries are oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, engineering, nuclear, electric power, timber industry, and food industry. All the machine-building and metal-working plants are located mainly in Tomsk and partly in Kolpashevo and Seversk. Oil is extracted mainly in the north-west and west of the region.

The main branches of agriculture are meat and dairy cattle breeding. Agricultural fields occupy about 5% of the territory. Wheat, flax and vegetables are grown in small amounts. Cattle-, pig-, sheep-, and goat-breeding are presented as well as poultry farming. Fur trade (squirrels, sables, musk-rats) and fur farming (silver-black fox) are also developed.

Tomsk Oblast - Natural Resources

Tomsk Oblast is rich in such natural resources as oil, natural gas, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, brown coal (the first place in Russia), peat (the second place in Russia), and groundwater. In the region there is the Bakcharskoe iron ore deposit, which is one of the largest in the world (about 57% of all iron ore in Russia).

Forests are one of the most significant assets of the region: about 20% (more than 26.7 million hectares) of forest resources in Western Siberia are located in Tomsk oblast. The timber reserves amount to 2.8 billion cubic meters.

In the Tomsk region there are 18.1 thousand rivers, streams and other watercourses with a total length of about 95 thousand km, including 1,620 rivers with a length of more than 10 km.

The main waterway is the Ob River. The Ob length in the region is 1,065 km. The main tributaries of the Ob flowing into it on the territory of the Tomsk region are the Tom, Chulym, Chaya, Ket, Parabel, Vasyugan, Tym.

Attractions of Tomsk Oblast

The sights of Tomsk Oblast include the harsh beauty of Siberian nature, the variety of winding rivers and canals, as well as monuments of wooden architecture, and other places that keep ancient legends about this land.

Undoubtedly, it is worth to visit Lake Kirek, one of the most beautiful reservoirs of the Tomsk region. It is located only 50 km from Tomsk. According to legend, a local millionaire drowned his diamonds here during the revolution in 1917.

About 40 km from Tomsk, there is a lake complex of the village of Samus consisting of seven lakes. These lakes are known for their very dark water, which is explained by the streams flowing into them from peat bogs.

Near the village of Kolarovo, located 33 km south of Tomsk, there is Siniy (Blue) cliff. It is a three-kilometer precipice descending to the Tom River. The cliff got its name due to the gray-blue shale that covers it. Several centuries ago, after the founding of Tomsk, a watchtower was installed on the cliff, from which signals were sent to the fortress.

At the source of the Berezovaya River, 40 km southeast of Tomsk, there is such an attraction as the Talovsky bowls, a natural monument of national importance. These are huge natural figures in the form of vessels of oval form, covered from the inside by birnessite - a rare mineral.

There is a tourist attraction of a global scale in the Tomsk region - the Vasyugan marshes, the largest marsh complex in the world. It is also called the “Russian Amazon”, because the Vasyugan marshes are not inferior to the famous South American river by their scale.

To the collection of sights of Alexandrovsky district of the Tomsk region, the most distant from the regional center, we can add Lake Baikal, the namesake of the famous lake, Goluboye (Blue) Lake, Malyye mountains (highlands) in the valley of the Vakh River and the Paninsky reserve, where the ancient burials of the Khanty and Ostyaks are preserved.

On the right bank of the Ob River, more than 200 km from Tomsk, the village of Mogochino is located. St. Nicholas Convent can be found here.

In Tomsk itself, plenty of monuments of wooden architecture deserve attention. In total, there are more than 700 objects, including 109 monuments of federal and regional significance.

Also in the Tomsk region you can visit more than 100 museums (most of them are located in Tomsk). The most popular museums are the Museum of History of Tomsk, the Memorial Museum “The NKVD Investigative Prison”, the Museum of Wooden Architecture, the Tomsk Regional Art Museum.
