Best Vienna Instagram Spots

1. schönbrunn palace & gardens.

Schönbrunn Palace is one of the top attractions in the city and no Vienna itinerary is ever complete without visiting this gorgeous palace.

Schönbrunn served as an imperial hunting lodge in the earlier days but in the 18th century, it was transformed into a palatial imperial residence.

Although it’s possible to tour the inside of the palace (you can check the ticket options here ), sadly you can’t take any photos inside.

However, this place has made it to the top of the best Vienna Instagram spots because of its exterior and its beautiful gardens!

In the summer, you’ll find many gorgeous tree tunnels and beautiful flowers scattered around the garden that make a perfect backdrop to every Instagram photo.

Moreover, you can use the exterior stairs of the Schönbrunn Palace either to take a photo or to admire the panoramic view of the gardens from above.

Girl in a white dress in front of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria

Location on Google Maps: Schönbrunn Palace

How to get there: Take subway U4 and depart at either Schönbrunn or Hietzing. Alternatively, you can use tram nr. 10 or 60, or bus nr. 10 A, and get off at Schloss Schönbrunn.

Best time to go: The park gates are opened at 6.30 am daily, while the Palace only opens at 9 am. If you want to avoid the crowds and have the park and the palace exteriors all to yourself, it’s best to go early in the morning, before the palace opens.

Cost: Visiting the grounds and the gardens is entirely free. Visiting the palace and some of the special attractions require an entrance ticket though, so plan accordingly.Tickets typically start from €22 per person, you can check the different ticket types here . If you want to learn more about the palace while you’re visiting, check out this top-rated guided tour of the Schönbrunn Palace !

2. Palmenhaus Schönbrunn

If you’re a plant lover, you’ll truly feel like heaven in this place! The Palm House is the largest greenhouse in all of Austria and it’s located inside the Schönbrunn gardens so you can easily visit it while touring the gardens.

The house is divided into three pavilions and each of them houses numerous tropical, subtropical, and Mediterranean plants.

The white spiral staircase close to the entrance is definitely one of the most instagrammable places in Vienna!

You can also find many cute little corners and benches scattered around the whole greenhouse that scream for an Instagram photo. It’s practically impossible to take a bad photo in a gorgeous scenery like this!

Girl in a white dress in front of Palmenhaus Schönbrunn, one of the best Vienna Instagram spots

Location on Google Maps: Palmenhaus Schönbrunn

How to get there: Take subway U4 and get off at Hietzing, then walk around 7 minutes to reach the greenhouse.

Best time to visit: The Palm House opens at 10 am every day and if you want to enjoy it without the crowds, go around opening time. I recommend arriving in the Schönbrunn garden around 8 am so you can have time to stroll around the garden first, then visit the Palm House around 10 am or 10.30 am.

Cost: The entrance ticket costs €9 per person.

3. Karlskirche

The first of several churches to feature on my list of the best Vienna Instagram spots, this beautiful Baroque church is distinguishable by its colossal green dome and twin towers that flank the main entrance.

Karlskirche was constructed during the 18th century in dedication to Saint Charles Borromeo for his efforts during the outbreak of the plague and marks the period when the city was finally free of the epidemic.

You can shoot from outside from Ressel Park which looks out at the church across a pond and adds to the scene. It’s also worth heading inside to get a close look at the frescoes.

Girl in a white dress sitting in front of Karlskirche, Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Karlskirche

How to get there: Karlskirche is located just south of the Innere Stadt. Karlsplatz Metro and Resselgasse and Gußhausstraße tram stops are each a 5-minute walk away. Karlskirche is served by buses that run along Karlsplatz.

Best time to visit: Any time of day. If you want to go inside Karlskirche then the opening hours are 9 am – 6 pm on Monday to Saturday and 12 pm – 7 pm on Sundays.

Cost: If you want to go inside the church and access the viewing platform the admission charge is €9.50.

4. Belvedere Palace

One of the leading tourist attractions in the city also happens to be one of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna!

Originally intended as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, this Baroque palace now contains an expansive art collection known for its pieces from Gustav Klimt.

Belvedere Palace is set within its own gardens that are dotted with fountains so there is a wealth of photo opportunities from the grounds without the need of heading indoors.

Girl in a white dress in front of Belvedere Palace in Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Belvedere Palace

How to get there: The Schloss Belvedere tram stop is right outside the palace entrance. Located less than 5 minutes away, Wien Quartier Belvedere is a hub of trams and buses. The closest metro stations are Südtiroler Platz and Taubstummengasse. You might want to coincide your visit to the palace with Karlskirche which is sandwiched between Belvedere Palace and the Innere Stadt.

Best time to go: Any time during the day. The palace is open daily, 10 am – 6 pm.

Cost: Free if you only visit the Belvederegarten and Botanical Gardens. An entrance ticket to Upper Belvedere costs €15.90, while it’s €8.90 to Belvedere 21. If you want to visit both galleries, you can purchase a 2 in 1 ticket for €22.90.

5. Palace of Justice

The Palace of Justice in Vienna is the seat of the Austrian Supreme Court (Oberster Gerichtshof).

Although the building looks amazing from the outside, you’ll want to make sure to take the time to go inside and shoot some more pictures in the atrium. Trust me, this is where the magic happens!

This is one of the best photography spots in Vienna thanks to its extravagant staircase that leads you up to a statue of Lady Justice and along the elaborate balustrade.

Although the Justizpalast isn’t as well known among tourists, it’s best to arrive early so that you can get the best photos possible. There is also a lovely rooftop cafe you could swing by.

Before visiting this place I’ve heard some bad reviews from other content creators so I was a bit nervous. Mostly they complained about the guards being rude to them, not letting them change outfits or take more photos, etc.

Luckily we haven’t experienced any of this – in fact, the guards were super nice to us! As long as you’re being respectful and don’t drag your whole wardrobe with you, you’ll be fine. Also, if you have a silent mode on your camera, turn it on!

Location on Google Maps: Justizpalast

How to get there: The Palace of Justice is a 5-minute walk from Volkstheater metro, tram, and bus station. It’s close to Maria-Theresien-Platz and Rathausplatz.

Best time to go: Escape the crowds and coincide your visit with the opening time of the palace. It is open to the public Monday to Friday, 7.30 am – 3.30 pm (closed on the weekends).

Cost: Free.

6. State Hall of the Austrian National Library

The State Hall of the Austrian National Library is a Baroque masterpiece brimming with statues, antique Venetian globes, frescoes, and over 200,000 books.

As with the Palace of Justice, this is one of the hidden gems in the city so you can create some truly unique content here.

The State Hall is one of the best Vienna Instagram spots for capturing the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment – with a modern twist of course!

Make sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the official opening time to be the first one entering the hall – this will grant you a few minutes to have the whole library all to yourself.

This is your time to shine if you want some amazing pictures without anyone else in the background!

Also, the library is quite dark and if you want to capture the whole hall, you need to be mindful with your lenses. Wide-angle lenses with wide aperture work best, but even with low f-stops like f/2.8 you’ll need to bump up your ISO a lot.

Girl in a white dress in the State Hall of the Austrian National Library in Vienna

Location on Google Maps: State Hall of the Austrian National Library

How to get there: Stephansplatz and Herrengasse metro stations are each a 10-minute walk away. It’s also within walking distance of Burggarten, the Vienna State Opera, and the Palace of Justice.

Best time to go: Arrive early in the morning, right when the State Hall opens at 10 am. The full opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am – 6 pm, and 10 am – 9 pm on Thursdays.

Cost: €10. There is an additional fee to visit the other five museums at the complex.

7. Vienna State Opera

One of the greatest icons of the city of music and performance art is one of the classic Vienna photo spots that you will not want to miss. The Renaissance Revival venue of the Vienna State Opera was completed in 1869 and now hosts seasonal performances from September until June every year.

The best position to shoot the exterior of the Vienna State Opera is actually across the road in front of the Albertina Museum but don’t miss the chance to have a closer look at the building too.

How to get there: Karlsplatz Metro Station is less than 5 minutes away on foot. Dozens of buses and trams stop right outside on the Ringstrasse.

Best time to go: Any time of day.

Cost: Free. If you want to go inside the theater then you can join a 40-minute guided tour for a fee of €13.

8. Albrechtsbrunnen

Located right in front of the Albertina Museum, Albrechtsbrunnen is a fountain that comprises a series of statues that represent the relationship between the city of Vienna (Vindobona) and the River Danube (Danubius). Other rivers are depicted and aim to highlight the strength of Austria-Hungary.

When the sky is blue and the fountain is gushing, this is one of the loveliest outdoor Instagrammable places in Vienna and it is a contender for the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

Location on Google Maps: Albrechtsbrunnen

How to get there: Stephansplatz Metro Station is a 5-minute walk away while the nearby Ringstrasse is well served by buses and trams. The fountain is within walking distance of the Burggarten and the Vienna State Opera.

Best time to go: Any time during the day.

9. Michaelerplatz

In keeping with European cities, Vienna is home to a range of beautiful public squares but Michaelerplatz is one of my recommendations for photographers.

Centrally located within the Innere Stadt, Michaelerplatz forms the main entrance to The Hofburg, the former imperial palace of the Habsburgs.

Within the square, you will also find the historic Michaelskirche which dates back to the 13th century as well as the excavated site of the Roman settlement, Vindobona.

Essentially the square offers up a plethora of some of the best photography spots in Vienna all within a few yards of one another. If your visit to Vienna coincides with the festive season you can also visit one of the best Christmas markets in Europe .

Location on Google Maps: Michaelerplatz

How to get there: Stephansplatz and Herrengasse metro stations are both less than 5 minutes away on foot.

Best time to go: Early in the morning before it gets busy.

10. Burggarten

Burggarten is a sweeping formal garden that backs onto The Hofburg and you can choose to visit it in conjunction with the palace or as an individual entity.

As you meander your way around the space, you’ll encounter statues of the likes of Mozart and Franz Josef and eventually reach the Art Nouveau conservatory, Schmetterlinghaus, which houses hundreds of butterflies and makes this one of the best Instagram spots in Vienna for fans of the colorful creatures! There’s plenty of space to experiment with your captures in Burggarten.

Location on Google Maps: Burggarten

How to get there: A number of trams and buses stop on the Ringstrasse right outside the Burggarten, with Burgring being the closest option. Volkstheater and Karlsplatz metro stations are a 10-minute walk away while Stephansplatz is a 15-minute alternative.

Best time to go: Any time during the day. The gardens are open daily, 7 am – 5.30 pm.

Cost: Visiting the gardens is free, however, it costs €9 to enter the Schmetterlinghaus (open daily, 10 am – 4 pm).

11. Café Sacher

Take a break from the historic monuments and lush green spaces and visit one of the best Instagram spots in Vienna where you can sit down and nibble on a slab of the city’s famous dessert.

Café Sacher is the home of the Original Sacher-Torte, a delectable chocolate sponge cake served with a dollop of whipped cream and a coffee of your choosing.

Besides the cake itself, the cafe setting is highly photogenic with its red velvet booths, vintage chandeliers, and old-world charm.

Girl in a white dress sitting in Cafe Sacher, Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Café Sacher Wien (it’s located on the ground floor of the Hotel Sacher Wien).

How to get there: The cafe is less than 10 minutes on foot from Stephansplatz Metro Station or you can take a bus to the Vienna State Opera and walk a couple of minutes from there.

Best time to go: The cafe is open for non-hotel guests but this is generally the setting for breakfast for hotel guests as well so you can imagine how busy it gets. Try to visit early as possible, ideally right when the cafe opens at 8 am!

Cost: Budget €15-20 for a slice of cake, a coffee, and the service charge.

12. Hundertwasserhaus

In stark contrast to anything else that you will see in the city, Hundertwasserhaus is one of the most eclectic Vienna Instagram spots to make my list and offers a change of scenery from imperial architecture.

Hundertwasserhaus, or the Hundertwasser House, is the creation of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and architect Joseph Krawina.

This higgledy-piggledy apartment features colorful tiles, wrought-iron balconies, geometric shapes, and vegetation creeping up over the walls before culminating in an urban roof forest.

It’s a huge building so make sure to have your wide-angle lens with you!

Girl in a red skirt in front of Hundertwasserhaus, a great Instagram spot in Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Hundertwasser House

How to get there: Located to the east of the Innere Stadt close to the Didube, Landstraße is the nearest metro station, sitting a 10-minute walk away. The closest tram stations are Hetzgasse and Löwengasse which are both a few minutes walk away. Buses drop you off at the nearby Marxergasse.

Best time to go: Visit early in the morning to catch the best light and before others arrive to photograph the building.

Cost: Free, or €12 to enter the museum.

13. Maria-Theresien-Platz

Another public square that I can recommend to photographers and content creators is the beautiful Maria-Theresien-Platz.

This piazza is adjacent to The Hofburg and is the setting of prominent museums such as Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien and the Museum of Natural History Vienna.

At the heart of the square, you will spot a huge statue of Empress Maria Theresa with four fountains marking each corner.

Girl at the Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Maria-Theresien-Platz

How to get there: Volkstheater Metro Station is a 5-minute walk away and is a hub for bus and tram routes as well. You can coincide your shoot here with visiting Burggarten.

Best time to go: Any time of day works for Maria-Theresien-Platz, however, my recommendation is to arrive early in the morning preferably.

Cost: Free but you might want to extend your visit by visiting one of the museums.

14. Rathausplatz

Rathausplatz is another public square within the Innere Stadt and is where you will find the Rathaus, the seat of local government.

This massive Neo-Gothic hall dominates the square and providing that you arrive early enough you should find a variety of angles to get creative with your images.

The square connects to the Rathauspark where you will find landscaped gardens and leafy avenues further adding to one of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna.

Girl in a red skirt in front of Rathaus in Vienna, Austria

Location on Google Maps: Rathausplatz

How to get there: Rathaus tram stop (Line 2) is the closest option or you can walk from Schottentor Metro Station in 10 minutes.

Best time to go: As early as possible to avoid the crowds. During winter the square is occupied by a Christmas market.

Cost: Free.

15. St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Located in the very heart of the Innere Stadt and ruling over the cityscape of Vienna, the medieval St. Stephen’s Cathedral has the tallest church spire in the country.

You can shoot outside the cathedral and capture its towers and jazzy tiled roof in the background and head inside to explore the interiors.

It is also possible to climb either of the two towers from where you will get incredible views across the city, making this one of the best Vienna Instagram spots for panoramas.

There are two towers to choose from: North and South. It’s worth visiting both but for those iconic Vienna views, I recommend the North Tower!

Girl in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna

Location on Google Maps: St. Stephen’s Cathedral

How to get there: St. Stephen’s Cathedral is located a 2-minute walk from Stephansplatz Metro Station.

Best time to go: The exterior of the church is best photographed during the early morning hours but you can visit the exterior at any time of the day. The towers are open daily between 9 am – 5.30 pm.

Cost: Visiting the church itself is free, however, the towers require an entrance ticket. It costs €6 for the North Tower and €5.50 for the South Tower.

16. Ferstel Passage

Running beneath Palais Ferstel, the Ferstel Passage is one of the best Instagram spots in Vienna if you want to tap on a spot of shopping alongside your shoot!

This covered 19th-century arcade was modeled on the shopping passages found in Paris and is buzzing with high-end shops, fresh produce, and chic eateries.

You can choose to capture the arches, fountains, and moldings or take a seat in one of the cafes for some lifestyle shots. It’s a great destination for a glass of wine in the evening after a day on your feet.

Girl at the Ferstel Passage in Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Ferstel Passage

How to get there: Schottentor Metro Station is a few minutes away on foot while a fleet of trams stops outside the nearby Burgtheater.

Best time to go: Any time during the day. The arcade is open from Monday to Saturday, 10 am – 8 pm.

Cost: Free but factor in cash for a coffee or a souvenir.

17. St. Francis of Assisi Church

The St. Francis of Assisi Church is further afield compared to the other Vienna Instagram spots on my list but it’s worth riding the metro out to pay it a visit.

It follows the architectural style of a Catholic Basilica and was built at the turn of the 20th century and consecrated in 1913.

With its russet-colored turrets and towers and Rhenish-Romanesque elements, it resembles the fairytale castles of Europe.

You can shoot with the church in the background from the gardens that surround the building or capture the spires from the nearby bridge.

Location on Google Maps: St. Francis of Assisi Church

How to get there: Vorgartenstraße Metro Station is a 5-minute walk from the church.

Best time to go: Any time during the day.

18. Votivkirche

Votivkirche, or the Votive Church, is the second-tallest church in Vienna and follows Neo-Gothic architecture. The house of worship was erected in gratitude following the unsuccessful assassination of Emperor Franz Joseph.

Set within the green Votivpark, you can plan your photoshoot from either the park or walk across the street to Sigmund-Freud Park for an entirely different perspective.

Shooting from the end of Frankgasse (first photo below) gives you another cool perspective on the church!

Girl in a red dress on a street with Votivkirche in the background

Location on Google Maps: Votivkirche

How to get there: Schottentor Metro Station and Landesgerichtsstraße bus and tram stops are each a 5-minute walk away. You can coincide your visit to Votivkirche with a trip to Rathausplatz.

Best time to go: Early morning is ideal to capture the best lighting conditions but you can visit any time during the day. If you want to go inside the church, then you will need to visit between 11 am – 6 pm (Tuesday to Friday), on Saturdays, 11 am – 7 pm, and on Sundays, 9 am – 1 pm. There is no access on Mondays.

19. Maria am Gestade Church

The final of my Vienna photo spots is one of the oldest churches in the city. Maria am Gestade Church (Mary at the Shore) is Gothic in its design and architecture and was built in the late 14th century.

It’s far more humble in comparison with the other churches featured in my guide but is nonetheless one of the most beautiful monuments in the city which will appeal to devotees of ancient buildings.

Girl in front of Maria am Gestade Church, Vienna

Location on Google Maps: Maria am Gestade Church

How to get there: Stephansplatz Metro Station is a 10-minute walk away and the Salztorbrücke bus and tram stop is only 5 minutes away.

Best time to go: Any time during the day. The church is open daily, 7 am – 6 pm.

The Best Vienna Instagram Spots: 25 Amazing Places You’ll Love!

Looking for Vienna Instagram spots that’ll make your social media sing? Need tips for the perfect places for photography in fair Wien?

Well, in a lot of ways, it’s pretty easy to find Instagrammable spots in Vienna. The capital of Austria is decorated like a particularly ornate birthday cake – imagine a cake for an Empress, then chuck a bit more gold and fancy bits on top, and you’re pretty much there. Everywhere you turn, there’ll be something pretty; even fairly nondescript streets out of the city center have gorgeous murals on the walls, celebrating a famous former resident.

But the abundance of beauty can make Vienna a little overwhelming. You can take oodles of pics of fabulous architecture, get distracted by a pretty park for an afternoon, make like a travel blogger and spend two hours getting that perfect shot of a fountain (yeah, I feel your pain). But that means that it’s actually really easy to miss some of the main, most gorgeous Vienna Instagram spots. You don’t want to post a photo to Instagram, and be met with a bunch of comments saying “what do you mean, you missed seeing Belvedere Palace? Are you sure you even went to Vienna?”

No, I say; no! We’re not letting that kind of Insta-shame happen to you. I’m going to give you the definitive list of Vienna Instagram spots, and you can check them off one by one, ensuring that you don’t miss a thing. But, I’m also going to make sure that you make the most of your time in Vienna, because if you reduce a city to just a series of photo opportunities, it’s a pretty hollow experience . So let’s check out the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna, and learn a bit of history and context too!

Hitting up a few cities in central Europe? Check out my Instagram guides to Prague and Budapest!

How to get to Instagram spots in Vienna

I’m going to take a wild guess, and assume that you don’t have a car at your disposal during your time in Vienna. If you do – meh, leave it at the hotel anyway, because most of our Vienna Instagram spots are located in the city center, in easy walking distance from each other! Hurrah! Plus, half of the fun of visiting Vienna is walking those pretty, pretty streets.

However, you probably don’t want to be walking all the time, especially if you’re a bit pressed for time. Whilst I recommend adding these Vienna Instagram spots to a map app – maps.me is a favorite of mine – so you can organize your route and visit as efficiently as possible, you’re probably going to want to take public transport at some point. That floaty dress and insta-ready straw hat are going to look pretty sad if they’re soaked in sweat, y’all, and there’s at least one sight that you’re definitely going to need to visit by tram.

Fortunately for all you budding influencers, Vienna is blessed with fantastic public transport. It’s not even terribly expensive, which is impressive in a city known for being terribly expensive. Even better, the tickets are valid on all three forms of Vienna public transport: buses, trams, and subway. At the very least, you’ll want a 24-hour ticket, but if you’re in town for a few days, go for the 48 or 72 hour tickets.

They’re also pretty easy to get – even before you leave! You can purchase them from the Wiener Linien online shop , or you can skip all that unnecessary paper and buy tickets through the app . I’ve used apps for public transport before, and it’s a simple, secure way to get around!

A view of a building in Vienna, Austria

Why you should find Instagram places in Vienna… for more than photos

It’s nearly time to discover the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna… but first, we need to take a moment.

Being the intrepid researcher and downright nosy travel blogger that I am, I like to haunt a few travel forums and Instagram hangouts in order to see what people are up to. I like to look up places that I’ve visited, and see what people thought, see if they visited the same places I did. I like to see if anyone else got ripped off in that market the same way I did, so I feel a little less bad about myself as a human being. But in general, I just like to share in other peoples’ experiences.

When I got back from Vienna, I looked it up in a few travel forums and on Instagram… and I was completely dismayed to see that some people had beautiful photos, but had no idea what they they’d actually taken a photo of. You can pose beautifully outside a building, with perfect hair and fashion, but if you’re not sure whether it was a church, a castle, or a museum, did you really visit it?

Vienna is much too beautiful, and too interesting, to reduce to a series of backdrops. Take your time at each place: explore, and soak it all in. If it’s a museum, go inside, buy a ticket, and check it out. If you’re in a park, sit a while and take in your surroundings. Read up on the places you’re going to visit, so you know the context in advance, and so you can really appreciate some of the extraordinary places you’re going to see. Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it’s totally possible to see all the best Vienna Instagram spots without reducing the city to a backdrop.

Make Vienna the star. Your captions will thank you for it!

The 25 most Instagrammable spots in Vienna!

The Vienna State Opera, one of the most popular Vienna Instagram spots

The Vienna State Opera

If you’re looking for Instagrammable places in Vienna, the chances are that you’re going to start at the Vienna State Opera!

It sits right at the head of Vienna’s Old Town, on the famous Ring Road (which contains a few of our Vienna Instagram spots, spoiler fans), and it’s just a logical place to get started. After all, you really can’t talk about Vienna on your Instagram without mentioning its musical history – did you know that the city had residents such as Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Salieri, Strauss and Schubert? You do now!

You’ll spot the Vienna State Opera as soon as you get near; it’s a grand, two-story building facing the road, with multiple arches and alcoves on the front of the building filled with statues of worthies. Though it’s actually not nearly as old as it looks; construction began in 1863, making it a mere whippersnapper as far as historic buildings go. It was also heavily damaged during the Second World War, a bombardment destroying the front half of the building, until it was lovingly restored. So don’t be fooled by the Mozart impersonators outside, and be tempted to state that the great man played here – he never set one talented foot in the place!

But what it lacks in Mozartiness (and don’t worry; we’ll be going to see him later), it more than makes up for in beauty. Grab a shot from across the Ring Road if you want to highlight the building itself, or make the use of the fountains at the sides of the building of you want to take a portrait!

The Gloriette at Schonbrunn Palace, one of the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna

Schönbrunn Palace

You really shouldn’t visit Vienna without a day trip to Schonbrunn Palace . If you do, I will hunt you down and confiscate your camera for at least two hours, because it’s simply one of the most beautiful places in the world!

The Palace is located a little way out of the city center – you need to take the U4 subway line or the number 60 tram, for a journey which should take about half an hour. And it’s worth every minute! There’s been a residence of some variety on this spot since 1569, when the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II thought “hey, this place is rather awesome”, and slapped down a mansion and hunting area on the spot. This quickly grew into a palace, and the personal playground of the Hapsburg family, who were Emperors and related to pretty much every royal family in Europe.

When the Emperor Franz Joseph died in 1918, the property passed into the possession of the Austrian Republic, and was converted into a museum. You can enter the building and see the incredible collections within – but what really makes this one of the finest Vienna Instagram spots is the extensive arrays of gardens. Not only does it contain its own zoo (one of the first in the world), but the Neptune Fountain is a downright magnificent, huge basin with water cascading over rocks and statues. You’ve got to see it!

Not enough for your insatiable need for Instagrammable places in Vienna? Walk up the 60-meter high hill, and stop by the Gloriette – a structure with an observation deck, which simply gives the best view of Vienna you’re likely to find!

The Upper building and gardens of the Belvedere Palace, one of the best Vienna Instagram spots. Red flowers grow on the lawn.

Belvedere Palace

If you’re looking for more Vienna Instagram spots right in the heart of Vienna city center, then Belvedere Palace really couldn’t be more perfect!

Built in 1697 as a summer residence for Prince Eugene (who was a military commander who won pretty much every battle he set foot in, and therefore could pretty much do what he wanted), the palace was constructed in the Baroque style – basically, as ornate as possible. It also included some fancy gardens for the Prince to stroll around and plot some more military shenanigans, which surrounded the buildings and showed off a fine collection of statuary.

After Prince Eugene died, the palace became the home of the royal family’s treasures – and that’s continued on to this day, as it now hosts one of the best art museums in the city. The Belvedere is best known as the home of Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss , a fact you can’t fail to notice when you visit Vienna; you’ll see it featured on everything from mobile phone cases to t-shirts. If you want to see it in person, you’ll have to buy a ticket for the museum, which will cost you in the region of €14. If you’re travelling with bae, how about utilizing this most prime of Vienna Instagram spots, and staging a kiss in front of it?

If art (or PDAs) just aren’t your thing, you should still visit! The gardens aren’t up to the size nor magnificence of Schönbrunn Palace, but they’re a lovely spot for a photo, whether it’s of the grounds, or of yourself. Be sure not to walk on the grass, though; the gardeners here rightly take their work seriously!

A waitress works in the Palm House, a cafe and restaurant converted from a tropical greenhouse

The Palm House

Located just along the street from the Albertina Museum, the Palm House is perfect for those looking for Vienna Instagram spots – or just a good cup of coffee!

Not to be confused with the Palm House at Schönbrunn Palace, this gorgeous building was constructed as a – yup, you guessed it – palm house for the Imperial family, where they could get out of any dreary Austrian weather, and go for a stroll among tropical flora. It wasn’t limited to palm trees, but a multitude of hanging vines and potted greenery… and now, you can go in and eat some brunch in the middle of it all!

Yup, what makes this one of the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna is its Jekyll and Hyde identity, as part-greenhouse, part coffee house/restaurant/bar. You can even come along for a DJ set on some evenings, and dance among the flowers, but if that isn’t high on your list of priorities, come here for a simple breakfast. The Viennese excel in pastries (did you know that croissants are actually Austrian?), and the ones served here are deliciously fresh and flaky. Snap a pic of a croissant, with a pot of jam on the side, surrounded by flowers, and you’ll have an Instagram feed to envy.

If a good, swanky dinner is more your thing, be sure to ring in advance and book a reservation. This is one of the most popular restaurants in Vienna!

The stained glass windows of the Votivkirche in Vienna, one of the most beautiful Vienna Instagram places

The Votive Church

When you’re searching for the best photography locations in Vienna, don’t miss the Votive Church off your list. This is a warm and welcoming place, and a photo of the interior is well worth the walk!

You can find this place just off the Ring Road, and a stone’s throw from the Sigmund Freud Museum (more on that later!), and you’ll spot it from a mile away – it’s a gorgeous, neo-Gothic building with a really interesting history. Basically, back in 1853, when Austria was Austro-Hungary, the young Emperor Franz Joseph was going for a walk when a Hungarian nationalist decided to try his hand at a spot of assassination. The Emperor was saved by a heavy gold collar which partially deflected the blow: shaken, he begged his guards to treat the would-be assassin well. They still executed him, natch, but the Emperor did make sure that his widow got a payout.

In thanks, the Emperor’s brother decided that a big ol’ church was the only suitable way to give thanks to God for the failure of the attempt, and so the Votive Church was constructed. Pop inside, and you’ll be treated to some of the most gorgeous stained glass I’ve ever seen, made even more impressive due to the fact that this place was heavily damaged during World War II. If you come in at the right time, you’ll have sunlight streaming through the colored glass panes, making it an instant must-see for your list of Vienna Instagram spots.

The Votive Church is super-welcoming (have a read of the notice board near the entrance!), but don’t abuse that by getting overly Instagrammy inside. It’s a place of worship for many Vienna residents; be respectful, and keep photos to that of the building.

A street in Vienna, with people shopping and many luxury shops on the sides

You might not recognize the name, but Kohlmarkt is one of the hidden gems of the Vienna Instagram spots. Not bad for a fairly short street!

Head around St Stephen’s Cathedral and on to the glitz of Graben, take a right turn, and you’ll find yourself at the head of Kohlmarkt: a glittering street stretching from the cathedral to the Hofburg. Along with Graben, these are the most exclusive shopping streets in Vienna, and they’re decorated to match! But it wasn’t always that way – back when Vienna was a bustling medieval city with an equally-bustling market, the wares on sale were a bit less exciting. “Kohlmarkt” translates as “cabbage market”, whereas “Graben” equates to “ditch”.

Luckily for anyone seeking Instagrammable spots in Vienna, they’ve totally transformed! Graben is liberally decorated with statues, as well as having a nice line in street performers, while Kohlmarkt is home to some of the most expensive stores in the city. Which is saying something in a place where even some simple Vienna souvenirs will set you back a bit, so make sure that your credit card is in good working order before you venture in!

Kohlmarkt is your best bet for a fabulous photo – stand at the Cathedral end, and look down the road towards the graceful shape of the Hofburg. The street is unsurprisingly busy during the day, so if you want a quieter photo or a little space to work, get here early.

St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, a popular Vienna Instagram spot, and one of the oldest buildings in Vienna

St Stephen’s Cathedral

Whilst the Rathaus, with its official status and Christmas markets, might be the technical heart of Vienna, there’s no doubt that St Stephen’s Cathedral is the most beloved structure in the city. Handily, with its decorated roof and beautiful architecture, it’s one of the best Vienna Instagram spots too!

You can’t fail to end up at St Stephen’s: go for a random wander around the city center, and you’ll almost certainly end up there – all roads lead to the Cathedral! It’s simply the most important church building in Austria, and one with a long and noble history. Completed in 1160 – yup, that’s pretty dang old – my personal favorite part of its history is that it caused Beethoven to discover the extend of his deafness. Apparently, he saw a flock of birds scatter from the bell tower, but couldn’t hear the bell itself, which makes you wonder how on earth anyone ever spoke to him.

The cathedral also had a lucky escape in the Second World War, when the German forces were retreating, and the city commandant gave instructions for the cathedral to be shelled and reduced to rubble. The captain in charge of the forces deliberately ignored the order (which wasn’t uncommon – structures in Florence and Krakow had similar escapes thanks to German officers disregarding orders), and the cathedral survived.

The interior of the cathedral is stunning, and well worth exploring, but save your Instagram shots for the exterior. The tiled roof is probably the cathedral’s most distinctive feature, so grab a photo of yourself at the sides of the building, where the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria are emblazoned into the roof!

Blumenhaus zum Dom, one of the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna thanks to its bright flower displays

Blumenhaus zum Dom

Whilst you’re in the area of St Stephen’s Cathedral, quickly pop around the back of the building and take a look at Blumenhaus zum Dom – it’s surely one of the prettiest flower shops in the city, and therefore deserving of a place on our list of Vienna Instagram spots!

It might not be a big historic sight, nor one of the big Vienna attractions, but that doesn’t preclude it from being one of the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna. The shop creates beautiful displays of its stock outside its doors – the shop itself isn’t terribly big, so the owners have brought the displays out into the open air. You can expect loads of the brightest, most colorful blooms to be on display, with everything from roses for weddings, to adorable pot plants.

Feel free to take photos of the outside, but be sure not to get in the way of anyone wanting to enter – this is a business, after all. Given that it’s also a very small shop, you’re probably better off not entering unless you intend to make a purchase. But if you just want to admire the flowers, there’s plenty to see outside!

Also, be sure to check out the tiny newsagent/souvenir shop next door. It’s not a Vienna Instagram spot, but the older couple who run it are absolutely lovely. Greet them in German, and they’ll welcome you in for a browse!

Ferstel Passage is a scenic corridor popular with photographers

Ferstel Passage

The Ferstel Passage is most definitely one of the best Vienna Instagram spots – it may only take a few minutes to walk through it, but you’re bound to fall in love with it. And so will your followers!

The passage is a covered shopping arcade (which were super-fashionable in Vienna at one point), built into the Palais Ferstel. An architect was commissioned to build a new home for the Austro-Hungarian bank, and came up with the heavenly structure we see today. But rather than name it after its owners, as was the usual tradition, he thought “meh, screw it: I’m naming it after someone far more important”. So rather predictably, he named it after himself.

Ferstel probably didn’t foresee the Insta-fame that his decision would bestow upon him, but there’s no doubting that this is one of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna. Enter the passage from the Herrengasse side, and you’ll get a beautiful shot of a marble-lined corridor stretching through the building, framed by the gentle tinkling of a fountain dedicated to the water nymphs of the Danube. It’s suitably posh, and therefore lined with cafes – if you’d rather have a photo to yourself, be sure to get here very early, and you’ll be free to capture yourself skipping through the passage and looking ever-so-classy.

If you’re in the mood for shopping, but the passage’s stores are a little out of your price range, there’s often a small flea market just by the exit!

The Schmetterlinghaus (Butterfly House) is one of the best photography spots in Vienna. A brown butterfly sits on pink flowers

Schmetterlinghaus Hofburg

Who doesn’t enjoy taking pictures of beautiful winged creatures, gently fluttering by? No one, that’s who! And that’s why the Schmetterlinghaus is well worth a place on your list of Vienna Instagram spots.

As well as being one of my favorite German words (matched only by “ krankenwagen “), a “schmetterling” is a butterfly! Awwww. The butterfly house, located literally next door to the Palm House, will fulfill all of your insect-related Instagram needs, with countless species of delicately colored critters flapping around a specially-constructed oasis. It’s a veritable butterfly paradise, with oodles of lovely greenery and hidey holes, warm temperatures, and even their own waterfall.

With over 400 butterflies in residence at any given time, you won’t lack for photo opportunities. There’s colorful flowers for the butterflies to perch on and feed from (some are artificial, but cunningly laden with butterfly treats), which make a lovely shot. You’re also very likely to receive a few visitors to your person; the butterflies seem pretty cool with perching on hands and heads and clothes, so you can post to your Instagram looking like a Disney princess.

It goes without saying, but be super-careful with the butterflies. They’re terrifyingly delicate, and lovely, gentle things. Don’t try to pick them up or manhandle them in any way – let them come to you, and let them depart when they’re ready!

A scenic cobbled street in Vienna, with red umbrellas raised

Spittelberggasse

The Spittelberg area is one of Vienna’s success stories – and now you can include it in your Instagram stories! (see what I did there?)

Definitely one of the city’s hidden gems, Spittelberggasse is right in the center of a collection of adorable, picturesque streets which were under the threat of being demolished back in the 1980’s. The area had gotten a little run-down, and a building contractor came up with the idea of knocking down the entire neighborhood to build new houses on the remains of some perfectly good houses! Not that it benefited their building company in any way, of course!

Luckily, the area was saved thanks to activists, and given a thorough renovation. Spittelberggasse is now one of the prettiest streets in the city – and if you’ve wandered around Vienna for any length of time, you’ll know that it’s got some competition! It’s also home to one of the Vienna’s best Christmas markets. In November, the streets are transformed into a winter wonderland, thanks to stalls selling food, drink, and a lot of clothing; it’s quieter than some of Vienna’s big markets, and more authentic.

Stand right at the top of the street, where it meets Burggasse, and you’ll get a gorgeous view of the street in all its glory. It doesn’t even matter if you’re not visiting at Christmas; you’ll love it either way! While you’re in the area, check out the gorgeous, stately buildings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Museum of Natural History in nearby Maria-Theresien-Platz.

A slice of chocolate Sacher Torte from the Hotel Sacher, served with cream

Hotel Sacher

A popular tactic for those seeking the finest Vienna Instagram spots, is to track down the most Instagrammable cafes in Vienna. After all, this is a city famed for its cafe culture. Snapping a pic of a genuine Sacher torte, in the cafe of the Hotel Sacher , might just be the ultimate in Vienna cafe shots!

You’ll no doubt see a few places selling Sacher torte in the city, but this is the only place to get the real deal… sort of. You see, the ultra-historic hotel (it’s still one of the best places to stay in Vienna) recruited a talented cake-baker named Franz Sacher, who came up with a delicious chocolate and apricot cake, and they marketed it as “The Original Sacher Torte” to dissuade imitators. Unfortunately, Sacher had previously worked at the Demel Bakery, and created a version of the cake there, so they claimed that they had the original recipe.

The legal battle between the two establishments carried on for over a hundred years – the hotel won, the bakery resorted to producing cakes in a different shape just to spite them, and everyone realized that the Viennese take their cakes hella seriously.

You may have to queue to get into the cafe (you can nab an outdoor seat if you’ve got the weather for it, plus the light is better for photography), but it’s well worth it. The cake doesn’t even cost as much as you’d expect, so take some artful photos of it – and then scoff the lot, because it’s utterly delicious!

The pink, green and gold interior of the Jesuit Church in Vienna, with marble columns at the side

The Jesuit Church

Whether you’re on the hunt of Instagrammable places in Vienna because you want some photo fodder, or whither you simply want to check out the most beautiful spots in the city, you have to check out the Jesuit Church . It’ll quite possibly be the most breathtaking church you’ll ever set foot in!

A short walk from the very center of the city, the Jesuit Church is also known as “University Church”, because of its proximity to the University of Vienna. This in turn led to one of its major claims to fame, as the church is immediately next to the university’s music hall, which saw the very first performance of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony! But you wouldn’t guess its importance – nor its inner beauty – by the outside of the building, which is curiously plain. Step inside, though, and it’s a different matter.

The church is an explosion of gold. Everything which could possibly handle a layer of gold has been gilded. There is a fake dome on the ceiling (it’s actually painted on to a flat surface) that’ll take your breath away, and have you doubting your own eyes. Then there’s my favorite aspect: marble columns, some straight and some twisting into fantastic spirals, colored in pink and mint-green hues that’ll have you thinking of confectionery. It’s truly stunning, and I can’t recommend it enough!

If you like your photos nice and quiet, get here just before closing time – you should find it peaceful, and free of distractions. Again, this is a working church, so be sure to be respectful of the building and its users.

The bright colours of the Hundertwasser House make it the most popular of Vienna Instagram spots!

Hundertwasser House

Love the bright colors of the Jesuit Church? Want some more of that business for your Vienna Instagram spots, but a little less church-y? You got it!

Located not far from Prater Park, the Hundertwasser House is an apartment block in the Landstrasse area of Vienna. But not just any apartment block! This one was the concept of Austrian-New Zealand artist Friedenreich Hudertwasser, and it’s an absolute delight to visit – clearly everyone else agrees, because it’s one of the most popular attractions in Vienna. Constructed in the 1970’s, the exterior of the building features uneven levels, bright shades of pink, blue and white, and even trees sprouting from the sides of the building itself. It’s one of those places that totally messes with your mind, in a good way!

If we’re being honest, Hundertwasser House is probably the star of all the Vienna Instagram spots, and there’s accordingly a plethora of places to take amazing photos. Taking a portrait shot of the building exterior is a must, but you’ll also get fantastic photos by heading up the stairs to the small cafe (which has some interesting decoration in its own right!), and even heading into the small souvenir shop opposite – it has a very quirky layout!

Hop on public transport, and visit the Hunderwasser House – you really can’t go wrong, no matter where you point your camera!

A woman stands in front of a white and green marble staircase

Strudlhofstiege

Y’know what we haven’t seen yet on out list of Vienna Instagram spots? A flippin’ big staircase, inspired by an artist, and featuring a built-in fountain. Seriously, what list of Instagrammable place is complete without one of those?

Well, rejoice! Because Vienna has delivered again, and it’s absolutely perfect for gettin’ your Instagram on. The artist Peter Strudel lived in this area in 1680, and opened up an art school. However, it must’ve been a bit of a pain for his students to get around, because this part of the city was constructed on two different levels – the streets on the higher level towered over the lower ones, by a height of around twenty meters. Eventually Strudel died, and his school sadly declined soon after.

In 1907, the Viennese decided that they were tired of having to walk further around to get to those higher levels, so a staircase was proposed. This staircase would pay tribute to Strudel by being artistic, so they designed a beautiful construction which switches back on itself, contrasting white marble with the bright greenery of neighboring trees. Two fountains are built into the lower levels, and it’s simply just a lovely place to be – under-visited, though very much in use!

For the perfect shot of Strudlhofstiege, stand at the bottom and having the angle looking up. The stairs are very much a thoroughfare rather than a huge attraction, so you should be able to grab a quiet moment for a self portrait! Strudel would be proud of you.

The grave of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in St Marx Cemetery, Vienna

St Marx Cemetery

You really need to visit a cemetery. No, bear with me here.

St. Marx isn’t just any old cemetery; not only is it pretty and scenic, in an old-fashioned way which is nothing less than you’d expect from one of the Vienna Instagram spots, but it’s also pretty significant. If you arrive and walk up the main path, with shaded glades on either side sheltering crumbling gravestones, flowers, and the occasional bunny, you’ll come to a crossroads. Take a left turn, and you’ll be able to pay homage to one of Vienna’s most celebrated residents – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Yes, him.

If you travel through Europe, you’re bound to bump into Mozart at some point – I’ve accidentally stumbled upon the house he was born in ( Salzburg ), his favorite pub ( Prague ), and various music venues he attended. He got around, but he ended up back in Austria after 35 years of living it up,  where he was appointed the court composer of Emperor Joseph II. Unfortunately, times got hard due to a war with the Turks, and money for the arts was less forthcoming. He died poor, and was unceremoniously dumped into a common grave in St Marx Cemetery, just outside the main sprawl of the city.

It’s easy to visit and pay tribute to the great man; hop on the train and alight at Vienna Bio Center St Marx station, and it’s a short walk from there. Mozart’s grave is pretty well visited, so tourists aren’t an unusual sight, but be respectful to any locals who may be visiting the resting places of loved ones.

The Hofburg in Vienna; a former imperial palace, and one of the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna

The Hofburg

The Hofburg is the imperial palace of the Austrian Emperors – the Hapsburg family – and it’s absolutely huuuuuuuge!!  If you’re looking for Instagrammable spots in Vienna, this vast complex definitely needs to be on your list!

Austria might be a small, relatively quiet place these days (it’s easy just to associate it with schnitzel, The Sound of Music, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, isn’t it?) but the Austro-Hungarian Empire covered an absolutely huge slice of Europe. In addition, the Hapsburgs were related to practically every royal family on the continent, and so they needed a swanky pad to display their power to all those lesser plebs. No problem: the Hofburg had been on this spot since the Middle Ages, so they just kept expanding it. And expanding it, and expanding it.

The Hofburg became the headquarters of the Austrian President when the imperial family got booted out in 1918, so you can’t wander willy-nilly through it, but there’s still plenty of areas that are fully open to the public, and dripping with gorgeousness. Horse fans should head to the famous Spanish Riding School with its famous white Lipizzaner horses, whilst if you love antique, classy interiors, you should head to the utter gorgeousness of the National Library .

Both of the above are ticketed attractions, but you won’t want for Instagram spots if you want to do it on the cheap. The exterior of the building on Michaelerplatz is stunning, and there’s a world of plazas, statues, and courtyards for you to find your perfect shot!

The altar of St Michael's Church in Vienna, with angels carved above it

St Michael’s Church

Were you reading about the Austrian imperial family, and thinking “whilst I am undoubtedly interested in the finest Vienna Instagram spots, I am also intrigued by the spiritual life of these people mandated with the wellbeing of the Austrian people”? I know; I can actually read minds!

Fortunately, the Hapsburg’s fave church is also hella Instagrammable, so yay! You’ll find it on the Michaelerplatz, quite literally across the street from the Hofburg (because the imperial family didn’t want to go far from their cozy palace). Constructed sometime in the 1200s, it’s also one of the older churches in Vienna, and famous for its crypt. Due to favorable temperatures which pretty much stay the same, it’s home to over 4000 corpses who have become mummified and preserved in time – some of them still have their fancy baroque wigs attached!

If you can tear yourself away from that, be sure to grab a photo of the main altar. It’s framed by an amazing piece of sculpture, created by Karl Georg Merville in alabaster – named The Fall of the Angels, dozens of cherubs and angels tumble from the carved clouds above. It combines with the light streaming through the windows in order to look incredibly realistic, shadow and shade adding depth to the work. It’s most definitely worth a spot on your Insta feed!

Whether you’re looking for the beautiful or the macabre, St Michael’s hits all the right notes.

A statue of a skeleton wearing a crown in the Imperial Crypt, one of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna

The Imperial Crypt (Capuchin Church)

Loved the creepy, macabre feeling of the crypt in St Michael’s? Want some more weird places in Vienna? You’ll love the Imperial Crypt!

This place is the hidden gem of Vienna Instagram spots. A crypt full deceased members of the House of Hapsburg might not sound like the most Instagrammable places in the worlf, but you’d be mistaken. Apart from the creepy factor, some of the tombs are incredibly ornate and beautiful – my particular favorite is that of Emperor Charles VI, which is flanked on all four corners by skeletons dressed in royal finery, and looking somewhat perplexed about it.

It’s also the final resting place of one of the region’s favorite figures: the Empress Elizabeth – or Sisi, as she was known. Born in Munich, famously beautiful, and equally independent, she hated being part of formal life in the court of the Hapsburgs. She much preferred shooting off to Hungary (a move which didn’t win her many fans among the Viennese, who considered Budapest as being Yokelville in comparison to their own city), and was unusual in learning Hungarian in order to properly have a chat with her subjects. She was assassinated in Geneva in 1898, and remains beloved both in Austria, and Hungary in particular.

Whilst the crypt isn’t suitable for traditional Instagram shots, get some artistic photos of the tombs, or tell the story of Sisi. She’s a fascinating and inspiring character, and one that you’ll see a lot of during your stay in Vienna!

Cafe Central in Vienna, one of the best Vienna Instagram spots

Cafe Central

Remember the good ol’ Ferstel Passage? Remember that rather nice-looking, but seemingly un-extraordinary cafe which stood on the corner of the building? It’s the Cafe Central – and it’s our next stop on our tour of Vienna Instagram spots!

This is probably the most famous cafe in Vienna, and it’s not just for the cakes – though those are delicious too! It’s actually famous for the vast amount of famous people who have treated it as their regular. In the 19th century, this was  the hotspot in Vienna if you considered yourself a bit of an intellectual. People came here to read newspapers, play chess against each other in attempt to prove how superior their intellect was, and to debate politics. This led to everyone from Hitler, Freud and Trotsky popping along for a spot of kuchen mit ein side of intellectual discourse.

In fact, Trotsky was such a regular that he became an almost permanent fixture. This was frequently mistaken for laziness. On one occasion, legend has it that two Austrians were discussing the possibility of war causing a revolution in Russia, to which one of them pointed to Trotsky and dismissively said “and who’s going to lead it? Him?”

The Cafe Central is incredibly popular for many reasons, so you’ll most likely have a queue outside unless you get here early. Grab a photo of yourself outside its famous doors, or head inside and photograph all those luscious cakes. There’s plenty to choose from!

Three women stand outside a Wurstelstand, kiosks which sell sausages

Würstelstands

Vienna loves a good wiener sausage – and würstelstands are ideal for getting a snap of everyday Viennese life!

If you’re wondering, würstelstands are the small shacks you see dotted all over the city, selling every kind of sausage imaginable. They’re famous for being there for every level of Vienna society, from the evening opera goers (in fact, my favorite of all the Vienna würstelstands is just outside the Vienna State Opera!), to revelers in the early hours of the morning. The stands are beloved, and right at the heart of any local – they have their own slang lingo, and a loyal, regular clientele. Any good Standler will be chatty, full of stories, and recognize you on sight.

So, repay the hardworking würstelstands with a starring role! They might not seem like obvious Instagram places in Vienna, but there’s so much to photograph – the food, the Standler, the locals queuing up to buy their usual. You’re definitely not going to go wrong with ordering a bite to eat, then putting it up on your feed – just remember that putting mayonnaise on your sausage is a big no-no here (I just saved you a whole bunch of Insta-shame). If you want a specific recommendation, get a Käsekrainer – a hot dog filled with pockets of melted cheese.

Yes, they’re unhealthy. Yes, they look disturbingly like pus; a thought which you need to immediately put of of your mind. But Käsekrainer, along with the würstelstands themselves, are a Vienna -must-do!

Handwritten pages written by Sigmund Freud, held in the Freud Museum in Vienna

The Freud Museum

Just a short hop from the city center, the Freud Museum is a place that’ll get in your head – and that makes it one of the Instagrammable places in Vienna! Though goodness knows what Freud would’ve made of it…

Sigmund Freud was born in what is now the Czech Republic, but he moved to Vienna in order to take up his studies of medicine and neuropathology, and this museum is housed in the building he lived in. A rather pleasant stroll from Freud’s beloved Cafe Central, this was where he developed his theories on subjects such as psychoanalysis, dreams, and ego. Oh, and where he took vast quantities of cocaine, because he ardently believed it to be a help with soothing one’s mind. Not sure about that one, Siggy.

You won’t see the famous couch, on which his patients used to lay to tell Freud about their troubles, and which fueled a million stereotypes about psychologists ever since. That followed Freud to London when he was exiled by the Nazis, but you can see an absolutely fascinating display of Freud’s collections and writings. These range from the cute (a little pottery cat), to the obscure, to the downright explicit, giving you a whole range of choice when it comes to your photography feed! The recreated rooms are also a visual treat.

It’s an interesting museum, and definitely one that’s attractive to the eye! Now, lie back, and tell me what you think about that attraction…

A close up of the Ferris Wheel in Prater Park, Vienna

The Ferris Wheel from “The Third Man”

Prater Park is certainly one of the best-known attractions in Vienna, and it’s simply impossible not to include the Wiener Riesenrad Ferris wheel on a list of Vienna Instagram spots!

You can easily reach the park by taking a subway train to Praterstern station, and following the lights and noise. In days gone by, this used to be imperial hunting grounds, but it was opened up to the public in 1766. This began a process of commerce moving in – although the park itself has remained free to enter ever since. Food stalls and small rides began to spring up, and eventually the whole area became an amusement park. It’s remained true to these early ideals; the park rides aren’t owned by some faceless business, but are independently owned by local families.

However, the most famous of them all is the Wiener Riesenrad Ferris wheel. It was built in 1897 (yup, that’s one old fairground ride), and is considered as nothing less than the symbol of Vienna. It’s that famous. It achieved a whole new level of fame when it was featured in the classic film The Third Man , starring Orson Welles, in 1949. Consistently voted one of the best films of all time, it’s a film noir set in post-war Vienna, with a hell of a lot of atmosphere; the Ferris wheel is the star of a critical moment in which two characters confront and threaten each other.

Whether you’re a film buff or not, or whether you just want to capture the symbol of Vienna, you’ll definitely want to grab a shot of the Ferris wheel – or a portrait of yourself in front of it! Sunset and early evening are the best times to get an iconic shot of an iconic structure!

Karlskirche in Vienna, with a large pool of water outside.

Karlskirche

Karlskirche is one of the most beautiful buildings in Vienna – and most certainly situated in one of the most beautiful locations!

It was constructed in 1737 after a particularly savage bout of plague, as the Emperor wanted to give thanks to St Charles for sparing his nation (specifically him, one suspects). It once had a direct line of sight to the Hofburg, which was completely cemented as the base of Austrian power, but that was lost long ago thanks to the development of the city. However, it does retain its main claim to fame: an unusually-shaped dome, almost lozenge-shaped, and the interior of which is fairly coated in frescoes.

The church charges an entry fee – but fear not! If you’re purely on the hunt for Vienna Instagram spots, you won’t have to pay a penny. The outside of the church is an Instagrammer’s paradise, with a wide, shallow pool situated right outside which reflects the glorious architecture. Sit on the rim of the pool, or do as many inventive poses as you please: you’re outside in a public plaza, and you won’t be disturbing anyone using the church! Hurrah!

Be sure to get here early – Karlskirche is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, plus you’ll catch the glorious rays of morning sun.

A statue of Mozart in Burggarten, Vienna

Well, you’ve done a thorough tour of the Instagrammable spots in Vienna! Let’s head back to a lovely, peaceful spot, put your feet up, and reflect on what an amazing city this is!

Remember that nice park, situated just outside the Palm House and the Schmetterlinghaus? That’s the Burggarten, and it’s our final stop. You can also silently be grateful for Napoleon for the opportunity, because he was indirectly responsible for the park’s creation! He camped his troops on this spot in 1809, whilst he was busy giving the locals a bit of hassle, and the land understandably got a bit ruined. When he withdrew, the Emperor’s staff decided to make lemonade with their brand new lemony land, and turned it into a park instead.

Good call! These days, a winding path curves through carefully-tended grass, and you can admire various statues of local worthies. The most famous is that of Vienna’s favorite adopted son – yup, Mozart looks proudly over the city which became his home, bringing us full circle on our tour of Vienna. You can take a photo of the statue itself, or take a self portrait in front of the flowers which have been cunningly arranged into the shape of a treble clef. This is the City of Music, after all.

After all that, take it easy, and sit on one of the benches. Watch the sun slowly sinking over the Vienna skyline, and just take it all in, because Vienna is just too good to rush!

Vienna, Austria , is a city steeped in history with streets reminiscent of the colors of Paris and cathedrals as intricate as the ones found in Italy.

When it comes to Vienna Instagram spots, it might honestly be harder to find a corner of the city that’s not photo-worthy. Austria’s capital has everything from 500-year-old churches to luxurious palaces to greenhouse-covered cafes to spice up your feed.

Don your favorite outfit and head out into the streets to see the most Instagrammable places in Vienna .

Table of Contents

Vienna Instagram Spots

Detailed view of the Gothic Revival architecture of Vienna's Rathaus (City Hall), with its ornate facade and towers under a cloudy sky.

Despite looking like it was built in the 15th century, Vienna’s city hall is a lot newer than that. The building was completed in 1883 in a neo-gothic architectural style, bringing with it all the feelings of a much older palace.

The building is unbelievably massive, with over 1500 windows and 2000 windows, which sounds like a housekeeping nightmare. It is the workplace of hundreds of government officials and has all kinds of functions, containing the city library and a restaurant.

During the holidays, the square in front of the Rathaus transforms into the Christmas Market of your dreams, complete with warm pretzels, mulled wine, and a tree with more lights than stars in the sky.

Whether you get seasonal pictures or not, this is by far one of the best photo spots in Vienna.

St Stephen’s Cathedral

Close-up of the intricate, patterned roof tiles and gothic spires of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna against a cloudy sky.

The next location on our list of Vienna Instagram spots has been a staple in the landscape of the city for almost 1000 years.

The original church no longer stands, but the patchwork replacements over the century have come together to create quite the Instagrammable spot in Vienna.

The iconic roof is one of the newest additions. WWII bombs left the hull of the building largely untouched, but fires spread as a result, causing the crashing down of the ceiling.

The colorful green, white, and yellow patterning that now adorns the building is a testament to Vienna’s continual adherence to history and beauty.

You can go inside and snap a picture of the nave and a part of the northern side for free, but anything beyond that requires a ticket.

Belvedere Palace

Wide-angle shot of the front facade of the Belvedere Palace in Vienna, with visitors walking on the gravel path leading to the baroque palace on an overcast day.

Belvedere Palace is a haven for architecture, landscape, and art lovers alike. The outside of the palace is a series of marvels.

The stretch of gardens between the Upper and Lower Palaces gives rise to feelings of royalty as you pass by each statue and carefully pruned hedge.

The Lower Belvedere contains a few special art exhibits and simpler architecture, while the Upper Belvedere sits atop the hill in luxurious glory, home to some of the most famous artwork of all time.

Whether you get a picture of Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’ or of the gardens in front of the Lower Belvedere, this is a Vienna Instagram spot you don’t want to miss.

Front view of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, featuring the grand architecture with tourists holding umbrellas on a rainy day.

The Hofburg is a magnificent building in the center of Vienna that was once the Imperial Habsburg family’s winter residence but now houses a number of museums, sights, and the workplace of the president of Austria.

The majesty of the building surrounds you from end to end, providing an excellent backdrop of columns and statues for your feed.

Inside the Hofburg, you can visit different staterooms that have been immaculately preserved for 600 years. You can also walk through the Sisi Museum, which is dedicated to Empress Elisabeth (called Sisi).

This is one of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna and one of the best places to spend half a day.

Schönbrunn Palace

Exterior view of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, showing its orange facade, white decorative details, and grand staircase under a clear blue sky.

Schönbrunn Palace is the most popular destination in Vienna, and for good reason.

The pale yellow imperial residence has a beautifully intimidating exterior and a luxurious interior. The best of the 18th century can be seen in every room, hung with golden candelabras on the walls or painted in bright colors on the ceilings.

If you don’t have the chance to go inside, you can still walk the gardens that have been recognized as an installation of art to all that visit.

The grounds and the palace have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Karlskirche

If you didn’t know it was already there, which I didn’t before I stumbled upon it, Karlskirche seems to appear out of nowhere, a neo-classical masterpiece in the middle of the city.

There are multiple photo opportunities here from any angle. Then, grab a coffee from the Coffee Bike parked in the square in front of the church and enjoy it on the steps before going in to see the celestial interior.

When I say celestial, I don’t mean because it’s a church, but the pale dawnlike colors and golden accents like rays of sun make you feel like you’re in a man-made heaven. When it comes to Vienna Instagram spots, this is a must-see.

FREE TRAVEL QUIZ

Vienna Opera House

Vienna State Opera House captured on a rainy day, showcasing its ornate Renaissance Revival architecture with pedestrians carrying umbrellas in front.

The opera house, or the Musikverein , is a classic Viennese experience.

To ensure that everyone can enjoy the mesmerizing concerts Vienna is known for, there are plenty of ticket options, ranging from under $10 to over $100.

There is also no dress code, but if you want an excuse to get in your best outfit and go to a show, that is more than welcome.

The iconic building is one of Vienna’s best photo spots, both because of its location and its beauty.

Votive Church

The upper section of Votive Church displaying the detailed gothic architecture, clock tower, and patterned roof under a clear sky.

Despite being constructed out of an almost very dark day in Austrian history, the Votive Church stands as one of the most incredible sights in the city.

Votive churches are normally constructed in gratitude for being rescued from an emergency. In this case, an assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph failed.

The church was consecrated on the day of the Silver wedding of the emperor and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi).

It is also known as the Ringstrasse Cathedral because of its location on the famous street. You’ll spend a lot of time on the Ringstrasse during a trip to Vienna, so Votive Church is one of the most accessible Vienna Instagram spots.

Austrian National Library

Close-up of the pediment of the Austrian National Library in Vienna, with Latin inscription and sculptures under the double-headed eagle emblem.

If you were one of those people who wished they would visit the library in Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast, the Austrian National Library can help fulfill that dream.

The Grand Hall is home to 200,000 books lined on shelves of rich dark wood, watched over by the fresco by court painter Daniel Gran. The 80-meter-long and 30-meter-high room was built in the early 18th century but has been renovated since then to keep the original wonder of the hall intact.

With its columns, art, and books, the Austrian National Library is one of the most Instagrammable places in Vienna for those looking for that dark academia feel.

Michaelerplatz

The front of the Hofburg Palace on a rainy day in Vienna, with crowds of tourists under umbrellas and the ornate facade with green domes in the background.

With close approximation to the Hofburg, Michaelerplatz is one of those ideal Vienna Instagram spots and sightseeing locations.

Flanked by various architectural masterpieces on almost every side, you’ll find yourself in a photo paradise. Michaelerplatz has had many changes over the years (‘the years’ dating back to Roman times), but continues to be a constant hub of activity and wonder.

The square transforms into a flurry of Christmas cheer during the holidays with a picturesque Christmas market.

Palace of Justice

The grand interior of the Palace of Justice in Vienna, showcasing its ornate Renaissance architecture, elaborate staircases, and glass ceiling.

The Palace of Justice, or the Justizpalast, is an incredible piece of Renaissance-style architecture that still functions today.

Hopefully, you won’t be visiting because you have a date with the justice system but because you want to see the mind-blowing structure and the view of the city from the public rooftop cafe.

After taking in the outside of the Palace of Justice, head up to grab a cup of coffee and relax, watching Vienna buzz from above.

Prater Amusement Park

Nighttime view of the entrance to the Wiener Riesenrad, the iconic Ferris wheel in Vienna's Prater park, illuminated in purple with a clear sky above.

Every attraction in Vienna is painted with the colors of class and sophistication, and the Prater Amusement Park is no different, with the addition of a childlike wonder and energy that comes with rollercoasters and spooky train rides.

The area was designated a ‘public leisure center’ in 1766 and has been a source of enjoyment for the Viennese ever since. In 1873, it was the location of the only World Exhibition that has ever been held in Austria.

Its charming old-world feel and fun attractions make it a prime Instagram spot in Vienna.

Hundertwasserhaus

The Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, an expressionist landmark building adorned with colorful, irregular patterns and overgrown with greenery under a clear sky.

The crowning jewel of architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s repertoire lies in the 3rd Viennese district.

A work of funky, unusual, and mesmerizing work, the Hundertwasserhaus is a prime example of the incredible Vienna Instagram spots you can find.

It appeared almost as if there was a jungle inside the building that was bursting to escape; trees, plants, and vines adorned it from every window and every open space.

With its pleasing environmental complexity, a picture of the Hundertwasserhous would be a great addition to your feed. After putting your camera away, you can grab a cup of coffee at Kunst and Cafe on the ground floor.

Café Central

Evening view of Café Central in Vienna with its illuminated signage and classic arched windows, inviting passersby to its patisserie and restaurant.

Vienna’s population and cuisine are a mix of cultures from all over the world, and Café Central is the perfect representation of this.

The Mediterranean architecture coupled with Austrian artisanal gastronomy at Café Central presents a very pretty picture. One you’ll want on your feed.

And the cafe’s menu is extensive. It serves all the Viennese classics you could ever want, from melange coffee to schnitzel to kaiserschmarren. Visit for the photos, and stay for the food.

St. Francis of Assisi Church

The majestic St. Francis of Assisi Church in Vienna, presented in a sunlit scene that highlights its intricate architecture and the surrounding greenery.

St. Francis of Assisi Church appears like a fairytale on the banks of the Danube.

Built in 1898, it has long been a staple of Vienna’s appeal to visitors. Nowadays, one can easily reach it from the city center by hopping on the metro.

Even better, it is completely free to enter and just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. By passing this church by, you would be missing out on one of the most Instagrammable spots in Vienna.

Final Thoughts: Instagrammable Spots in Vienna

In this city of class, luxury, and art, there are plenty of things that you’ll want to show off to your online community.

Hopefully, this article will help you to narrow down the best Vienna Instagram spots where you can enjoy some of the culture and cuisine as well.

 Most instagrammable places in Vienna

As you might understand we quite love Vienna, mostly because of the charming style of the buildings. Hundertwasserhaus is one of the most stunning structures in Vienna, and also quite quirky to be honest. The style is completely opposite compared to Vienna Innere Stadt, but still fascinating.

The multicolour facades, with multilayers, as well give charm to the buildings in this area. located in the Landstraße district on the corner of Kegelgasse and Löwengasse, it is today one of the most visited places in the city. Recently it has become part of Austria’s Cultural Heritage. The building hosts today 53 private apartments and four offices, also there are 16 private terraces and three communal terraces.

LOCATION | Kegelgasse PRICE | Free BEST TIME TO VISIT |  During the day

Place this on the list of the most beautiful landscapes viewpoint in Vienna.  From the top of Stephansdom Towers, you can enjoy a wide view of the city. This is one of the best places to take photos of Vienna and enjoy its skyline. So you get a close-up aerial perspective of the very heart of the city. We suggest visiting this place at sunset for the best moment of the day. Plan ahead your shot and book the tickets in advance , this place tends to be busy at all times.

The towers are on top of St. Stephen’s Church, within 67m high and 343 steps to the top, which is one of the highest points in the city. Note that the stairs are quite narrow and up it’s windy.

We have included Stephansdom Towers in the list of the best instagrammable places in Vienna because we just love it, however, it is not the best Vienna Instagram spot. Instead, if you are a photography enthusiast you will love this beautiful corner of Vienna, and also the ticket is not that expensive.

Schönbrunn Palace | Sisi Castle

If you are in Vienna you can’t miss Sisi Castle. Here it is the most beautiful place for photography in Vienna. It is not just a Vienna photo location , it is also a must-do in Vienna in your visit .

After your visit to the castle, explore around and find the best place to take Instagram photos. In your Vienna Itinerary , you can’t miss this stop.

It’s very easy to reach the fairytale castle from the city centre. Taking the Metro – Green Line, it will stop you at Schönbrunn, about 5 minutes from the Palace entrance. Already from the courtyard, you will understand how powerful this building is, opened to the public around 1779. The courtyard hosts galleries, ceremonies and beautiful events, and it’s open to the public. Also, all the rest of the gardens are public, and the whole complex of about 1.2 Km, from 1996 is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Vienna was my dream since I was little, curious to discover Sisi Castle , one of the most instagrammable places in Vienna . Around the Castle, there is a huge park where you can walk down the hill, near the Gloriette, from there you will be able to see the best part of the city. You might get this huge square quite busy, because hosts always have events, and in winter there is one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe, worth visiting .

If you are into photography it’s worth visiting this place at night, to get some long exposure. This shopping arcade is going from Freyungass e to Herrengasse , perpendicular to Strauchgasse . Built by the Austrian Architect Heinrich von Ferstel in 1860, today hosts fine cafes, unique boutiques and amazing restaurants. The passage has also hidden another incredible Instagram worthy place in Vienna, the small internal courtyard.

Following the passage, admiring the vaulted ceilings and the marble-covered arcade, you will arrive at the internal courtyard. The beautiful hexagonal glass dome will welcome you to the hidden gem, with at the centre a six meters high active water fountain. We might have said already enough, you have now to check this out.

We suggest you check out the park at night time, with the special lights on this become even nicer to catch.

Prater is one of the Vienna attractions you must put in your “To-Do List” of the best spots to photograph in Vienna. It was the funniest part of our trip. We were caught by the magic of the moment, alternating having fun on the attractions like the racing go-karts and the oldest Viennese Giant Ferris wheel , that we almost forgot that we were taking photos. It’s a huge park and it will take you in a whirl of emotions like did for us.

It’s true what they say: ” When you travel you live three times: when you dream, when you live and when you remember. “

LOCATION | Prater Amusement Park ENTRANCE | Free admission, you pay just every attraction OPENING TIME |   All Day 24h BEST TIME TO VISIT |  Evening / Avoid Weekend

Ok well, let’s start from the beginning, what is a Fiaker? Well, this is a typical way to transport people, like the taxi today. A Fiaker is a carriage drawn by horses. You might have seen photos on Instagram about Vienna with the typical Fiakers.

These kinds of “vehicles” are famous in the city, and are a perfect tourist attraction. Photos of iconic locations of Vienna, with Fiakers going all around are ideal for your next photo shooting in Vienna. You can find those mainly in Vienna’s inner city, or well known as “Innere Stadt”.

To be more accurate we suggest you check out Michaelerplatz and stand until you get one passing by. It’s easy to find your right spot and due to there are many tourists around, this photo will not take long to be taken. This square is also famous because you are passing by the Spanish Riding School, another location of the movie Sisi.

LOCATION | Michaelerplatz BEST TIME TO VISIT |  Evening / Avoid Weekend

After Sisi Castle, this is the second-best one. Schloss Belvedere Palace Vienna or “The Belvedere” is surely one the best photography locations in Vienna .

The Belvedere Castle Vienna is a historical landmark for the capital dating back to the 16th century during the Habsburg reign. This place is beautiful all year round, reflecting very well the seasonality. You can get a perfect spot for every season, with obviously Autumn and Spring at their best, with fall and orange colours in one, and flowers in bloom in another.

Also is free to roam around, visit the park and enjoy the benches. You can also enjoy the inside of this palace, and discover the art galleries or some temporary exposition.

LOCATION | Prinz Eugen-Straße ENTRANCE | Free entrance to the gardens, Admission Fee for the intern (Check the tickets)

Best Photography locations in Vienna - 46

This is the most central palace on our list of photography locations in Vienna. The Hofburg Palace is one of the most beautiful spots in the city. The Entrance is pure Neo-Rococo style called Michael’s Gate it’s so gorgeous. This is today the official residence of the President of Austria, and once the Imperial Palace of the Habsburg Dynasty, which mainly used it in winter because central, switching in summer for Schonbrunn.

However, even today, many tourists are just passing by, admiring the beautiful details and getting over.  We know that it’s hard to condense a whole bunch of attractions to visit just in a few days in Vienna, but this place is a blast and needs your attention.

The Palace is one of the most beautiful in Europe and maybe in the world, expanded many times until the forms it has today. The entire area hosts the Imperial Chapel, the Library and Treasury. As mentioned before, there is also the Spanish Riding School, just passing by the Gate toward Michaelerplatz.

LOCATION | The Hofburg BEST TIME TO VISIT |  All day, beautiful in the evening

Who doesn’t know the famous Sacher Torte? If not, you are missing the yummy cake that all the world envy Vienna. Café Sacher Wien is the original place where this cake was made at first. Despite being a common touristy place, the old café is gorgeous and worth an Instagram spot in Vienna.

You can enjoy a delicious Sacher tort just sitting at a charming place. It will not disappoint you like many other places. The prices are ok, the venue is great and the cake tasty. If visiting Vienna in Winter , you should also get a good hot chocolate to warm you up. Include the Sacher torte born place in your list of Best photography spots in Vienna

Most instagrammable cafes in Vienna

We understand that the call for a delicious Sacher tort can be difficult to avoid. However, we found it very annoying to queue to get a piece of cake in just one place. Sometimes we found it useful to just get around the corner to discover hidden gems, even more, worth than the usual popular spot.

The Sacher-Torte is the typical Austrian cake. It is really good, we must say. In Austria you can find this cake almost everywhere, but why don’t you choose a good instagrammable café in Vienna with an amazing view as well?

Most of the people would say to go to an expensive shop, queuing a lot for a Sacher-Torte which might cost you around 8 euro. However, you can also opt for Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäcker which is nearby and is a beautiful building with many other products and spectacular areas. The Sacher Torte here will cost you only 4.90 euro and is delicious as well.

Just at the back of Hofburg Palace of Vienna, there is the Austrian National Library. This is an incredible Instagram spot in Vienna. Like many buildings within the city, at night the Austrian National Gallery gives its best, with glamorous lights and nice reflections. Once called the Imperial Court Library is completely absorbed in the Neo-Rococo style Hofburg Palace and hosts four different museums, private collections and special archives. If you are surprised by the outside, you will never imagine how beautiful the National Library looks inside.

The stunning building is dated back to the 19th Century and is a symbol of the timeless elegance of Vienna. You can walk here just from the Opera of Vienna and enjoy this beautiful photo spot.

Staatsoper - The Opera House of Vienna Austria at night

We have mentioned this already above. About 5 minutes walking from the central Hotel Imperial Vienna, there is the Staatsoper. This is one of the main reasons why famous artists were choosing this hotel as a residence and some doing it nowadays too.

The Staatsoper is an institution in Vienna and the whole of Austria. If you don’t know a lot about Opera music and Vienna, you should know that only the Austrian Capital boasts more than 50 theatres and opera houses.

The building is impressive and attracts many photographers worldwide. At night like other buildings in the Inner Stadt, the Staatsoper becomes magical. We couldn’t miss including the Opera in our guide to the Vienna instagrammable spots.

LOCATION | Opernring ENTRANCE | Free to roam around the building | Private Visits to be booked BEST TIME TO VISIT |  Sunset or Evening

This is a true hidden gem of Vienna in our whole itinerary. Not many think about the Palace of Justice while filling a guide to Vienna, however, we can assure you this is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

We love to get lost and find remote spaces that are insanely beautiful. The Palace of Justice is a gorgeous Vienna Instagram Spot. Don’t worry you are not getting in trouble to enter this space. The Palace of Justice welcomes guests every day to enjoy the beautiful architecture. Also, head to the top, to enjoy the view from the Justizcafè. The rooftop space with a fine cafè is so beautiful. A great overview of Vienna from above. The cafè is often closed for private events, however, it is open every weekday.

Karlskirche Church

We haven’t included many churches on our guide, over than the local cathedral. However, Karlskirche is worth to be mentioned in our guide to the Vienna Instagram spots. The beautiful baroque church is often overshadowed by other incredible sightseeing of the city, however, it’s the perfect place to visit for photography in Vienna.

The fountain/lake in front of the church offers the perfect mirror-like reflections that emphasize the details of the building. Don’t skip Karlskirche Church if looking for photo spots in Vienna. You can also go to the top of the church to enjoy the view, thanks to the panoramic lift.

You can meet with friends or experience the cool vibes of Vienna, just exploring this district. Enjoy some of the best museums of Vienna, discovering the Leopold Museum or the MUMOK.

We have included the MuseumsQuartier in the list of incredible Instagram spots in Vienna because of the beautiful narrow glimpses. Just be creative and find the right angle. The district’s amazing at night, so be sure to hang out here after sunset.

Kunst Haus Wien | Museum Hundertwasser

Already from the street facade, you can understand how quirky this place is, but also quite interesting. The Kunst Haus Wien Museum is the place designed by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser to permanently host his works.

Every year this building welcomes around 200K visitors and hosts also some incredible temporary exhibitions for other artists.

You have to discover this place and shoot some buildings that are looking differently compared to the classical style of Vienna.

Other incredible Instagram spots in Vienna

St. francis of assisi church in vienna.

This post was already covering all the best places in Vienna, except one. We think this is one of the best photography spots in Vienna at night. St. Francis of Assisi is also an off the beaten path gem in Vienna, and unmissable on our guide.

This Neo-Romanesque Style church is quintessential for every photographer. The beautiful style and the lights reflecting on the stone silhouette of the building make it an incredible subject to photograph. This is not just an Instagram spot but is a proper photography place in Vienna at night. Built from 1898 to 1913, the Roman Catholic church is located in Mexikoplatz in the Second district of Vienna. Inside is worth visiting the Art Nouveau-style ElisabethKapelle (Elizabeth Chapel).

Photography tips for vienna.

  • Use a wide-angle lens, especially shooting interiors
  • Carry with you a tripod at all time for stable night images
  • Wake up early in the morning to catch the perfect sunrise

How to get around Vienna

In the city centre of Vienna, Inner Stadt is almost totally walkable. However, where it is not, the walk paths are wide and there is not that much vehicle traffic around. Even the distance between the landmarks we have included in this guide of Vienna Instagram spots are fine by the city centre but needs you to take metro, train or bus to be reached, like Schönbrunn Palace.

Said that the public transport of Vienna works very well, and there are four ways to get around Vienna. You can take the subway, or metro system, the U-Bahn, the S-Bahn, which is the local train, the Tram and the bus. There are no ticket barriers at the stations, but the tickets can be bought at the ticket machines at the entrance or at the tram/bus stop.

Despite that, you might find it useful to get your hop-on-hop-off ticket for peace of mind and save some bucks. We found the single 2.30 euro ticket quite expensive compared to the beneficial unique ticket for the tourist bus .

Where can I take pictures in Vienna?

Everywhere. However, these are our top photo spots in Vienna to check out.

12 Best Vienna Instagram Spots

The best Vienna Instagram spots, by travel blogger What The Fab

1. Belvedere Palace

I’m starting off our list with one of my favorite places in Vienna; the Belvedere Palace . This gorgeous Baroque palace is located in the southern part of the city, and it provides stunning views over both Vienna and its nearby suburbs.

This UNESCO world heritage site is perfect for some Instagram photography. The garden area is beaming with fountains and classical sculptures, perfect for a romantic photo to bring some softness to your feed.

The palace was once the main summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, and today it is home to several museums. While the gardens are particularly beautiful, you don’t want to forget to also take some shots inside the palace as well, the stunning baroque architecture is incredible.

2. Palace of Justice

Another must-have for your IG feed in Vienna is the Palace of Justice .

Located in the center of Vienna, this neo-Renaissance building was originally used as a courthouse and today it houses many different government offices. You will see plenty of locals and tourists walking around its gardens and courtyard, as the impressive building is one of the more popular photography spots.

But don’t let this intimidate you, with the right angle and timing, you won’t see any of them in your pic!

Its stunning exterior makes it an ideal spot for taking some amazing shots with its grand columns, intricate sculptures, and golden statues.

But for some real magic, head inside to snag a photo on the grand staircase. The ceiling looks like a greenhouse with huge windows bringing in natural light making it one of the best Vienna Instagram spots!

There are guards inside, so make sure to be respectful when taking your photos. They are used to content creators coming in but this is still a place of work for many locals.

3. State Hall of the Austrian National Library

A harder shot to get, but one of the most unique spots in Vienna, is the State Hall of the Austrian National Library .

As one of the less popular tourist attractions, not many people discover the library’s huge bookshelves and stunning ceiling murals but luckily, I got you!

It has become a must for some of the coolest travel content creators.

The reason this one is a bit harder to get is it is always open to the public so people are always in and out of the library. I recommend getting there right when it opens to have the highest chance of getting your shot without people walking in the background.

Its stunning artwork and tall ceilings make it a great spot for taking some big-picture shots, so don’t forget to bring your wide lens!

Address: Josefsplatz 1, 1010 Wien, Austria ( Linked on Google maps here )

4. Vienna State Opera House

The Vienna Opera House needs no introduction as one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. And it’s no surprise that it is a great spot for taking some incredible pictures.

The building itself was built in the late 1800s, and its iconic exterior makes it an ideal spot to take an amazing shot. The all-white building stands out against the blue sky and it really shows off the Austrian architecture.

To get the best position to shoot pictures of the Vienna State Opera you’ll need to head across the street to the Albertina Museum , this will let you get some great shots without the crowds of people.

And if you’re lucky enough to attend a show, make sure to take some pictures while inside as well, it is truly an experience like no other!

5. Schmetterlinghaus

If you are needing some nature content for your grid, then you have to check out Schmetterlinghaus .

This beautiful butterfly house is located next to the Burggarten , and it houses a large collection of different species of butterflies and moths.

It makes for some incredible photos with its bright colors, flowers and foliage, and natural light that streams in from the glass ceiling. Plus, it is the perfect spot to get some selfie shots with the butterflies flying around you!

It is located right around the corner from the Opera House making it easy to get both shots in a short amount of time without running around the city.

It does cost 7 euros to get in but you will be able to explore the entire butterfly house and take as many pictures as you want.

6. Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens

You can’t go to Vienna and not get a shot in front of the Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens .

This iconic landmark is a must-see for anyone visiting Vienna, and its grand facade makes it the perfect spot to take some amazing shots for your feed. Plus, there are plenty of gardens nearby that you can use as backdrops for your photos too.

The building’s yellow hues stand out against the green foliage and it’s a great way to show off the beauty of Vienna, as well as brighten up your feed in the spring.

Explore and find some of the amazing tree tunnels and rose gardens scattered around the palace grounds, they will make your photos look like something out of a fairytale!

If you choose to tour the inside of the palace you will see some beautiful art and architecture but you won’t be able to take photos, unfortunately.

7. Palmenhaus Schönbrunn

If you can’t tell by now, I love some garden content! And Palmenhaus Schönbrunn is another one of the best Vienna Instagram spots.

One second you will be in Vienna and the next a tropical island with its Mediterranean gardens, palm trees, and other exotic plants. And the best part is that this indoor palm house is free to explore.

My favorite shot here is on the white spiraling staircase that is surrounded by beautiful glass windows and green plants.

And make sure to also explore the outdoor parts of the Palace Park, it is full of wildlife and flowers making it the perfect place for more nature-inspired photos.

8. Karlskirche

If you aren’t familiar with the name Karslskirche , I’m almost positive you have seen the photos. This baroque Roman Catholic church is one of the most beautiful and grand churches in Vienna and it makes for some stunning photos.

The two towering columns with their striking green domes are a European staple and they are instantly recognizable as soon as you see them.

To get the best photo, try to get there early in the morning or late at night when the sun is low and there aren’t many people around. This way you can capture some unique angles and silhouettes in your shots!

For something more dramatic try shooting from the bottom looking up at the facade. Your photo will stand out from the crowd and you will be able to show off all of the intricate details on this beautiful building.

9. Café Central Wein

What’s a trip to Vienna without some Viennese coffee and a treat?

A photoshoot in this iconic cafe is a no-brainer for me. Work and play? Say less!

Regardless of where you sit in Cafe Central you will get some instaworthy backdrops with their high mirrored walls and sparking chandeliers.

Plus, you can also get some incredible shots of the cakes and pastries for a carousel post. The Sachet Torte was mine – and everyone else’s – favorite. The chocolatey goodness is deserving of some photos before it’s devoured.

Address: Herrengasse 14, 1010 Wien, Austria ( Linked on Google maps here )

10. Rathausplatz

For a more urban feel in your photos, Rathausplatz is the perfect spot. The popular square has some interesting architecture and monuments that serve as great backdrops for any photo shoot.

Obviously, this spot is the most magical when it has Rathausplatz’s epic Christmas market going on, like when we were visiting!

My favorite shots here are taken just outside of the town hall itself. The building’s massive size combined with its baroque and neo-gothic style creates an impressive backdrop for your photos.

Rathausplatz brings something a little different than the typical tourist shots.

In the summertime, there are also many events held here that can make great subjects for your Instagram posts. From open-air concerts to markets—you will never be short of ideas on how to tell stories through your photos!

Address: Rathauspl., 1010 Wien, Austria ( Linked on Google maps here )

11. Brasserie Palmenhaus

Not only is this brasserie a great spot to try some Viennese coffee and desserts, it’s also a whole vibe.

The tall, curved glass ceilings, palm trees, and natural light make it ideal for snapping some beautiful photos.

Address: Burggarten 1, 1010 Wien, Austria ( Linked on Google maps here )

12. St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Last but certainly not least is the stunning St. Stephen’s Cathedral . It is one of Vienna’s most iconic landmarks and one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city.

The church has been standing for over 700 years!

The cathedral is best photographed from the outside early in the morning when the light is hitting the rooftop tile perfectly. The vibrant blue tile work is also something to capture as it stands out from a mile away.

Climb one of the towers for some of the best views in the city, and snag a few up-close photos of the spire.

No matter how you choose to capture this historic landmark, your photos will easily be amongst the best of Vienna!

Address: Stephansplatz 3, 1010 Wien, Austria ( Linked on Google maps here )

So there you have it! With these insider tips, you’ll be able to discover some of the best Vienna Instagram spots. Get creative and happy snapping!

visit vienna instagram

With countless Instagram and photography spots across the city, Vienna* is a photographer’s paradise.

Since I moved to Vienna in 2017, I’ve developed a passion for exploring places here in my hometown with interesting architecture or history and sharing these on my Instagram .

With this blog post I want to help you to get the best out of your Vienna pictures. I didn’t intend this to be just a list of Vienna photography spots . So I added my personal tips from a local insider’s perspective plus interesting facts about these places. Enjoy it!

1. Schönbrunn Palace

2. vienna state opera, 3. belvedere palace, 4. karlskirche, 6. volksgarten, 7. natural and art history museums, 8. votivkirche, 9. stadtpark, 10. franz-von-assissi kirche, vienna photography and instagram spots map.

The Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most popular sights in Austria and is a top must-see in Vienna. Explore the royal rooms during a tour* or wander around the gardens. This place will give you princess moments, you can feel the imperial touch there.

If you are looking for a once in a lifetime treat, then book a night at Schönbrunn Palace* . Yes you read that right, there is an exclusive suite inside the palace where you can live like a royal and will have the palace all by yourself after opening hours. This has got the be the most exclusive place to stay in Vienna, dreams come true here.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: Don’t miss out on visiting the Gloriette. It sits on top of a small hill with a gorgeous view over the palace with the city in the background.

Oh the beautiful opera! No Vienna visit is complete without snapping at least one picture here. The opera is an equally popular photo spot for locals as well as tourists. Whenever I come here I always try to find a different perspective and discover new details of this wonderful building.

One thing that’s still on my Vienna bucket list is to see the opera from the inside. To do so you can join a guided tour to get a look behind the scenes. Or you can marvel at the interior while you listen to a show .

visit vienna instagram

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: The best place to take a selfie with the opera isn’t in front of it but behind it. Go up to Albertinaplatz and you will find a public terrace with the best view of the Opera.

If one palace is not enough for you, then I want to show you my favorite in Vienna: the Belvedere Palace. I love the elegant white facade, the turquoise roof and the whole garden. When can I move in?

In former days Prince Eugene used the Belvedere Palace as his summer house. Today it is a museum with a great collection of art , including Klimt’s famous painting “The Kiss”

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: During winter there is a cute little Christmas market in front of the Upper Belvedere. Christmas lights in the form of stars decorate the pond in front of it. Now imagine these lights combined with the majestic illuminated castle in the background and a reflection of these whole view in the water – it’s magical.

Ever since I’ve seen the Karlskirche (Charles Church) for the first time it has got me fascinated. With is architectural mix of Roman, Greek and Baroque style elements, it looks so unique.

During the 18th century Vienna suffered from the last great outbreak of the Black Plague. To give thanks after it has passed, the Roman Emperor Charles VI commissioned to build Karlskirche.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: In front of the church lies a square named Karlsplatz. It’s a popular spot to hang out and soak up the sun. If you are looking to avoid people in your pictures, then it’s best to come here during the cold season.

Whenever I post a picture of Vienna’s town hall on my Instagram, I always receive at least one comment comment like “what a beautiful castle!”. Actually it’s the seat of the mayor and the city council of Vienna and was the most expensive of all the monumental buildings established along the Ringstraße at the end of the nineteenth century.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

It’s not the easiest spot for taking a picture. Why? Because throughout the year several festivals take place on the square in front of it. Most of the time this place is filled with stalls or construction is going on.

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: Want to know the ultimate trick to get a guaranteed shot at the empty square? There are webcams on the tower of the city council as well as on the roof of the Burgtheater which is located on the opposite side. With these webcams you can always check if there’s currently construction going on or an event in place.

This beautiful park is a blooming oasis in Vienna’s city center. It was built over the city fortifications that Napoleon destroyed in 1809 and is part of the Hofburg Palace.

At its center you’ll find the shining white Theseus Temple which is a replica of a Greek temple.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: It’s a must-visit in May when the rose garden blooms and over 3000 rose bushes cover the Volksgarten with a sweet floral scent.

The exterior of the Natural and Art History Museums of Vienna are equally interesting as their exhibitions. Since I visited the Art History Museum as a teenager, it’s my favorite museum in Vienna because of the Egyptian Collection.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: Check the Natural History Museum’s monthly program for a guided walk through the museum up to the rooftop terrace with an unforgettable view of Vienna.

The Votivkirche (Votive Church) is the second biggest church in Vienna. On sunny days, many young people hang around the park in front of it as the University of Vienna is close by.

visit vienna instagram

In 1853 the Emperor Franz became victim of an assassination attempt but survived. To thank God for saving him, his brother Maximilian ordered to build this church at the site of the attack.

The inauguration took place on the silver wedding anniversary of the Emperor Franz and his wife Empress Elisabeth know as Sissi in 1879.

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: Find Vienna’s most photographed Magnolia tree in the park in front of Votivkirche. It’s easy to spot it by the masses of people surrounding it. Don’t be fooled by pictures. The tree is small but by getting the right perspective you can make it look impressive in your pictures.

The Stadtpark was opened in 1862 as Vienna’s first public park. It has more monuments and sculptures than any other park in the city. The most famous one is the golden Johann Strauss memorial.

With a size of approx. 65.000 m² the Vienna Stadtpark is the biggest park area in the city center. Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in the sun here.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: Fall is my favorite season to come here. The foliage on the side of the walkway along the river adds vibrant reds to your photos.

A bit off the city center you will find this beautiful church close to the Danube. It looks like a fairytale castle with its cute towers and roof. It’s located at Mexikoplatz which got its name as Mexico was the only country of the League of Nations that protested against the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938.

Traveldreamfairy - Travel - Vienna Instagram Photography Spots

Traveldreamfairy’s tip: Take the stairs up to Reichsbrücke for the best view of this architectural gem.

8 Best Instagram Photo Spots in Vienna, Austria

By Dymphe / January 13, 2023

In this article, I will show you the 8 best Instagram photo spots in Vienna . Vienna is a very beautiful and Instagrammable city in Austria , and there are lots of photogenic spots.

There are some well-known spots, but I also included some places that aren't famous at all. Have fun exploring the city!

Table of Contents

1. Justizpalast

One of the most photogenic spots in Vienna is Justizpalast.

The architecture of Justizpalast is so beautiful, and I love that a photo here really looks like a fairytale.

I've seen many photos here, and every single one of them looks amazing! The symmetry of this place makes it perfect for Instagram.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Victoria Yore + TJ Drysdale (@followmeawaytravel) on May 5, 2019 at 10:04am PDT

2. Inside the Prater Turm

The Prater Turm is a swing carousel that's more than a hundred meters high!

It is located in Wurstelprater, which is an amusement park in Vienna. This carousel is so much fun because it is really very high!

Besides that, it's also one of the best Instagram photo spots in Vienna. The view from it is amazing!

If you're in Vienna, I'd highly recommend going to this park. There are many fun things to do.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vienna 🇦🇹 (@vienna_austria) on Jan 18, 2020 at 5:27am PST

3. Votive Church Vienna

Votive Church is a very photogenic building in Vienna.

This church looks magnificent. It has so many details!

Furthermore, I'd especially recommend taking photos here during sunset. I love the combination of this beautiful church and the dreamy sunrise.

4. The No Filter Museum

There are some great museums in Vienna , but this one is special.

The No Filter Museum is a very Instagrammable museum in Vienna you have to visit if you want to take photos! Especially when it's cold outside, this is the place to be for your photos.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Interaktives Selfie Pop-Up (@nofilter_museum) on Nov 1, 2019 at 3:35am PDT

5. University of Vienna

The University of Vienna is definitely one of the most beautiful universities in the world. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe this is the inside of a university!

The place looks so luxurious and I love the decorations. This belongs to the best Instagram photo spots in Vienna.

6. Café Central Wien

I feel like this cafe is really underrated on Instagram! I mean, I haven't seen it a lot on Instagram yet, but it looks so beautiful. Especially the ceiling is just gorgeous.

Also, they have delicious cakes (and coffee). So going here is a great experience for sure.

7. Stephansplatz

Stephansplatz is a very nice square in Vienna. One of the most beautiful things to see here is St. Stephen's Cathedral.

The St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the tallest churches in the world! It's very impressive to see the church. And it's amazing to admire the architecture of it.

As the church looks so beautiful, it's one of the best Instagram photo spots in Vienna.

Also, going to St. Stephen's Cathedral is one of the best free things to do in Vienna .

8. The Hofburg

The Hofburg was the palace of the Basburg dynasty rulers. Nowadays, it's the official residence and workplace of the president.

Also, it was built in the 13th century, which is very interesting! Since it is located in the center of Vienna, it's very easy to get there.

I'd highly recommend taking a photo here when you visit Austria. That's not only because it looks beautiful, but also because it's just a very interesting building.

21 Incredibly Instagrammable Places in Vienna, Austria

Table of Contents

THE MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE PLACES IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

St. charles church.

First on the list is one of my all time favourite photo places in Vienna: St. Charles Church /Karlskirche/. It is located in the very centre of the city – Karlsplatz metro station, right next to the University of Technology. From my observations, this place doesn’t get too crowded, so you don’t have to be up early to get a nice shot without anyone else in the background. This photo, for example, was taken in the afternoon, so spare your mornings for some of the other photo-worthy places mentioned below!

Location : Kreuzherrengasse 1 (Karlsplatz metro station)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpZa8zknVqQ

2. St. Francis of Assisi Church

This is one of the prettiest places in Vienna and yet, for some reason, it is quite overlooked. The St. Francis of Assisi Church looks like a Disney castle and it makes for the perfect Instagram shot! Its lack of popularity means that, once again, you don’t have to worry about getting there early before ‘everyone else’.

Location : Mexikoplatz 12 (Vorgartenstrasse metro station)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqIJwlbFBhu/

Prater is a large amusement park and is one of the most touristy places in the city. Here you can find various rides and rollercoasters, as well as the famous Viennese giant wheel, which has turned into one of Vienna’s landmarks. The Prater area is open 24 hours, however, the different attractions may have different opening hours (from 10am till 1am, depending on the weather). You don’t really need working attractions in order to take a nice shot though, do you!?

Location : Prater metro station

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtgWLECjaZY/

University of Vienna Library

If you decide to visit the university, don’t forget to go check out the library. All I am going to say about this place is that you’re not going to want to leave – it makes you feel like you’re in a Harry Potter book! Going inside with bags and jackets is not permitted, so either leave them by the door, or ask the staff if you can just take a peek and a few shots – they’ll let you in.

Location : University of Vienna

View this post on Instagram My most favourite place in Vienna is definitely the University of Vienna Library! The Austrian Hogwarts is the coziest place to spend your day studying, and very often I would stay there for up to 10 hours a day during exam season. Well, I definitely don't mind it! . . . #vienna #wien #austria #vienna_city #topviennaphoto #viennagoforit #viennanow #igersvienna #wien_love #wanderlust #travelgram #instatravel #photooftheday #picoftheday #igersaustriaontour A post shared by Lyubomira | Travel blogger (@bulgarianonthego) on Feb 27, 2018 at 11:57am PST

Hundertwasserhaus

Hundertwasserhaus is definitely one of the most picturesque and Instagrammable places in Vienna, as well as one of the most visited ones. The building serves as an apartment house and impresses with its colourful and playful facade. Due to its unique style it is now considered an Austrian cultural heritage. There is a cute ‘London’ phone booth right next to it, so why not use it as a prop for your photo – it adds that extra charm for sure!

Location : Kegelgasse 36-38

View this post on Instagram Feels like London.. buut it's actually Vienna 😉 This little spot is one of the top places for tourists in the Austrian capital, and the red phone booth makes it even more charming and "instagrammable"! . . . . . . Makes me wonder.. Are there any other hidden London booths around the world? 🙄 A post shared by Lyubomira | Travel blogger (@bulgarianonthego) on Apr 24, 2018 at 8:00am PDT

Belvedere Palace

These historic Baroque palaces are a must-see when visiting Vienna. The whole Belvedere complex consists of the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palace, the Orangery and the Palace Stables, as well as the beautiful gardens around it. The inside of it is used as an art museum nowadays, but it’s enough to enjoy the beauty of the place just from the outside.

Location : Am Belvedere 1

View this post on Instagram One Belvedere to go, please! 😄🏰 Eye candy 🏰 meets arm candy @swatch. 💕 Is there any other watch collector among you? 😍 #swatchthis #swatch #vienna #viennablogger [Ad/Werbung] A post shared by Una & Isidora🌟Vienna & Travel📸 (@viennainsider) on Jul 4, 2018 at 12:47pm PDT

Schönbrunn Palace

Welcome to Schönbrunn Palace – one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments of Austria. This place is well worth a visit – it is massive and it has so much to offer: the gorgeous palace itself, the beautiful gardens, the world’s oldest zoo, a park, and the gloriette, which is located on a big hill, offering a breathtaking view over the city. Be there bright and early to skip the crowds and plan at least an hour or two to walk around and take in all the beauty.

Location : Schönbrunn metro station

View this post on Instagram Golden, red and cloudy… 🍂🍁⛅️ A post shared by Natalie (@natalie_wien) on Nov 7, 2018 at 12:48am PST

Austrian National Library

Walking around the National Library makes you feel like you’re in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast movie. This is the largest library in Austria, and definitely one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen. Attention! Entry fee of 8 euros.

Location : Josefsplatz 1

St Stephen’s Cathedral

St Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the most impressive buildings in Vienna, built in the 12th century in a beautiful gothic style. It is the most visited place, so beware that the square in front is always crowded, unless you get there very early. The two towers of the cathedral reveal a gorgeous view over the city. You can either climb the 343 steps that lead to the South Tower for €5.00 or take the elevator to the top of  the North Tower for €6.00. Whichever one you choose, you won’t be disappointed!

Location : Stephansdom metro station

View this post on Instagram Take 343 stairs to enjoy this view. 😍 Worth the climb, but only once.😄 Snap the pics for a lifetime and thats it! This one was taken back in 2014. ❤ Time flies, rooftops of Vienna stay the same. 😄📸 #vienna #hello_worldpics #hello_rooftops #beautifuldestinations #cntraveler #viennablogger A post shared by Una & Isidora🌟Vienna & Travel📸 (@viennainsider) on Mar 7, 2018 at 12:02pm PST

Michaelerplatz

Michaelerplatz (St. Michael’s Square) is the entrance gate to the Hofburg palace. The style of it is pretty similar to Hofburg itself, but all the horses and the carriages in front of it create quite a unique atmosphere.

View this post on Instagram Walking around downtown Vienna makes you feel like you're being taken back in time 💫 . . . . I was so surprised to find out that Austria, and more specifically Vienna, is not a very popular destination (especially amongst people who are not from Europe). Mostly because ever since I was little I associated Vienna with greatness and.. something magnificent. And I still do. . . . . Please let me know if Vienna ever was on your wish list or if you've already visited, and if so – what you think about it! Would love to hear from you. 🙌 A post shared by Lyubomira | Travel blogger (@bulgarianonthego) on May 13, 2018 at 5:45am PDT

Right behind the Hofburg palace is Burggarten. The place is home to the Palm House – one of the most neglected instagrammable spots in Vienna, if you ask me. There is a huge park where you can chill and soak up some sun rays in the summer, or enjoy a warm Viennese coffee in the cafe there during the winter. But don’t forget to snap a photo of the beautiful glasshouses for the ‘gram.

View this post on Instagram Happy Halloween! 🎃 Do you celebrate Halloween in your country? A post shared by Lyubomira | Travel blogger (@bulgarianonthego) on Oct 31, 2018 at 10:46am PDT

University of Economics

The building of the University of Economics is newly constructed and it is considered the largest campus for business sciences in Europe. The design inside reminds me of a spaceship (not that I’ve ever been on one haha), and it’s honestly quite impressive. The interior is white and sleek, so if that’s what your Instagram feed needs – go for it!

Location : Messe Prater or Krieau metro station

Vienna State Opera

The famous Viennese opera house is one of the must-see places for everyone visiting the Austrian capital. Its style and architecture make everyone stop and take a second look, no matter how many times they’ve seen it already. The interior is just as beautiful as the exterior, if not even more so. If you want to learn how to get yourself a 3 euro ticket to a concert in this exact opera house, check out my blogpost on ways to explore Vienna on a budget !

Pro tip: To get the best view of the building and take a shot from the same spot that many Instagrammers do, go up the stairs in front of Albertina Museum (right next to it).

Location : Karlsplatz metro station

View this post on Instagram Welcome to Vienna! 🇦🇹 💭 Thinking about writing a blog post about the Austrian capital. Let me know what you would like to know about about this city! 😊 A post shared by Lyubomira | Travel blogger (@bulgarianonthego) on Oct 23, 2018 at 9:19am PDT

Votive Church

Votive Church is another beautiful gothic church in the first district, located right next to the main building of the University of Vienna. Sadly, the front of the church is always covered with advertisements, but you can get a beautiful shot of the side facades from the small streets around it.

Location : Rooseveltplatz, Schottentor metro station

View this post on Instagram Is anyone else missing this view? 💗😍💗 #vienna #magnolia #springvibes #viennablogger #viennainsider #beautifuldestinations #hello_worldpics #theprettycities A post shared by Una & Isidora🌟Vienna & Travel📸 (@viennainsider) on May 3, 2018 at 12:45am PDT

Maria-Theresien Platz

The Square of Maria Theresa is another very popular spot in Vienna that every single guide leads you to. Facing each other from both sides of the square are two almost-identical museums – the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Art History. Right in the middle of the square stands a statue of Empress Maria Theresa, surrounded by beautiful green areas with a few benches where you can take a short rest and enjoy the view. The facade of the ‘twin’ museums can’t get any more photogenic, so strike a pose and take that perfect Instagram shot.

Location : Burgring 5

View this post on Instagram This place looks a bit like out of a medieval fairytale.. ✨ . . . . On a side note – please share your tips for BUDAPEST with me 🤗 Heading there next weekend and I just can't wait anymore. Let me know about all things worth seeing, eating, visiting etc. 🇭🇺 A post shared by Lyubomira | Travel blogger (@bulgarianonthego) on May 17, 2018 at 5:35am PDT

Vienna City Hall (Rathaus)

The city hall in Vienna is another one of the must-see places there. There is usually always something taking place in front of it – a Christmas market in the winter, a film festival during the summer months, or an ice rink right after Christmas. Whichever event you stumble across, you won’t be disappointed, because it’s just going to add to the charm of this place.

Location : Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 1

View this post on Instagram The magical Vienna’s Ice World opens its doors to the public 💁🏻‍♀️⛸ Do you like ice skating?! 😉 A post shared by Natalie (@natalie_wien) on Jan 20, 2019 at 12:41am PST

20. Maria am Gestade

This gothic jewel is one of the oldest churches in the city, and one of the most photogenic places in all of Vienna. The staircase in front is perfect for some sneaky shots, especially since not many know about this exact spot.  The church is so well tucked away from the tourist eyes, that it can even be hard to find.

Location : Salvatorgasse 12

View this post on Instagram Amazing blue sky over #Vienna today! Thank you @natalie_wien for this great picture of Vienna's Maria am Gestade. One of the oldest churches in the city and one of the few surviving examples of Gothic architecture in Vienna. #viennanow A post shared by Wien | Vienna (@viennatouristboard) on Jan 19, 2017 at 5:07am PST

Austrian National Library, 1010 Vienna

This library definitely isn’t the easiest for Instagram as it’s so wide. At night it gets lit up and also looks nice. Tip: If you happen to be in the city just after the rain, then you might find puddles such as below where you may get perfect reflections. This makes it a lot easier to take a picture that is square or portrait (landscape crops aren’t that great for Instagram). You could also try using a wide-angle lens and then take pictures closer to the building. Austrian National Library
