: Ambleside – Waterhead / Bowness-on-Windermere / Lakeside – Newby Bridge

Windermere Lake Cruises has a large fleet of modern and traditional launches and ‘steamers’, which operate the full length of  Windermere , calling at  Waterhead ,  Bowness  and Lakeside . A return cruise between Bowness and Waterhead takes about 1.25 hours. A return cruise between Bowness and Lakeside takes about 1.5 hours, and a return cruise round the whole lake takes about 3 hours. Some boats also stop at the pier at  Brockhole , the National Park Visitor Centre. Scroll down for timetables, fares, landings and “steamer” details.

Alternative Lake Cruises

While Windermere Lake Cruises, on some of their larger “steamers”, can sometimes feel a little “corporate” or as though you are on a cross Channel ferry, more intimate and relaxing boat trips are available on nearby Coniston Water with the glorious Steam Yacht Gondola ( a real steam yacht) and the Coniston Launch .

Other delightful boat trips and cruises can be taken on Derwentwater , near Keswick , with the Keswick Launch and on Ullswater , near Penrith , with Ullswater Steamers .

Although often described as steamers, the former British Rail owned boats are all in fact motor vessels, as are the MV Swift of 2020, MV Tern of 1891, the MV Teal of 1936, and the MV Swan of 1938.

Lakeside Station near Newby Bridge was built in 1869 as the terminus of the old Furness Railway. Today you can travel to Haverthwaite on the  Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway . Also at the station is the  Aquarium of the Lakes . Combined tickets for these can be purchased.

These four “steamers” operate on the main Yellow and Red cruise routes (scroll down for routes & fares)

• Refreshment bar and licensed bar
• Promenade deck
• View stations
• Indoor/outdoor upper deck with glazing that can be lowered/raised for different weather conditions
• Centrally heated saloons and toilets
• Wheelchair accessible toilet
• All facilities are wheelchair accessible on this boat

Windermere Lake Cruises – Modern Launches

None of these are wheelchair accessible. All of the modern launches except Venture, which has no on board facilities, have toilets, heating, refreshments and either licensed bars or alcoholic drinks for sale.

Windermere Lake Cruises – Traditional Launches

The launches “Queen of the Lake” and “Princess of the Lake” are just under 50 feet in length and carry up to 84 passengers each. “Muriel II” and “Sunflower” are just under 50 feet in length and carry up to 57 passengers each.

None of the traditional launches are wheelchair accessible or have facilities.

Windermere Lake Cruise – 8 Amazing Places to Stop on a Boat Trip!

If you didn’t go on a Lake Cruise in the Lake District – did you even go?!  

Hand on heart, I really don’t think a visit to the Lake District is complete without getting out onto the water and seeing some of the sights.  

A Windermere Lake Cruise is by far the most popular choice for tourists visiting the Lake District due to the stunning scenery and being able to stop off at the numerous pretty villages around the lakeside.

So, I was really excited to get the opportunity to do this on Lake Windermere on my recent trip with Go Lakes.  

I spent a whole day cruising the water with Windermere Lake Cruises using their freedom of the lake ticket.  

This pass gave me 24 hours of unlimited access to explore all the cruise routes on Lake Windermere and stop off at some top attractions too.  

So, here is my ultimate Windermere Lake Cruise guide with all the places you can stop off on your boat trip.

What is Lake Windermere?

Lake Windermere is officially the longest natural water lake in England (FYI the largest in the UK is Loch Neagh in Northern Ireland).  

It’s a ‘ribbon lake’ that was formed over 13,000 years ago by the last major ice age.  

Windermere stretches over 10.5 miles long or 18 kilometres and, at points, it’s over a mile wide. Its deepest point is 219 feet and that’s just over 66 metres!

Out of all the Lake District National Park, the area surrounding Windermere is the most famous of all.

Not only due to the pretty scenery but also with the railway station which makes it accessible.

Many literary giants through time, like William Wordsworth, wrote popular guidebooks to the beauty of the lakes.

So, when Windermere train station first arrived in 1847 with some of the first railway hotels, it contributed to a huge Victorian tourism boom. Today, over 19 million people visit the Lake District each year!  

Windermere is also the name of a small town that sits next to Bowness-on-Windermere.

Is Windermere a lake or a mere?

There are sixteen lakes in the Lake District National Park. But, did you know there is technically only one ‘lake’ by official terms of definition?! That is Bassenthwaite Lake.  

In fact, the other bodies of water are classed as tarns, waters, and mere’s, including Lake Windermere!  

A mere by definition is a body of water that is shallow in relation to its size. But, many people still stay that lakes and lakes and that’s all there is to it!  

So, despite the scientific terms, I guess you have to decide whether it’s a lake or a mere to you.  

Personally, I don’t see the difference and still call it a lake!

The history of Windermere Lake Cruises

Today more than 1.2 million visitors sail on the lake each year with Windermere Lake Cruises and its the most popular attraction in Cumbria but how did it all begin and become so popular?  

Although today the lake is filled with tourist boats and leisure cruises, Lake Windermere used to be a route of transport for slate, coal, timber, and fishing.

There were a number of packet service boats taking passengers and goods across the water.  

The first launch of a steamer boat on Lake Windermere was the ‘Lady of the Lake’ in 1845. It was suggested by John Fell of Greenodd and William Wordsworth greatly opposed the idea!  

But the turnout for the launch proved so popular, with many famous figures like Harriet Martineau and Lord Cavendish showing up for the occasion, it took off with a bang!  

Back then it carried 200 people and even had a swanky first-class lounge.

Over time, more and more ferries opened up with the stiff competition, competitive prices, and the race to be the fastest boat.

So, eventually, they were unionised and then owned by the British Railways as an interchange service from the train track to the lakes.  

Once the railways were privatised, in 1993 the Windermere Iron Steamboat Company was bought by Bowness Bay Boating Company and they merged to create Windermere Lake Cruises.

How much is a boat trip with Windermere Lake Cruises?

Windermere Lake Cruises offer a variety of pricing options.

From one-way ferry rides, returns, steam railway and boat tickets, and ticket and attraction combos too.

• Yellow Route – Bowness to Lakeside: £12.30 adult return, £7.40 children
• Red Route – Bowness to Ambleside: £11.80 adult return, £7.10 children
• Blue Route – Windermere Islands cruise: £9 adult return, £4.50 children
• Green Route – Ambleside to Ambleside (via Wray castle and Brockhole: £9.40 adult return, £4.75 children
• Can dogs travel on Windermere Lake Cruises? Well behaved dogs on a lead travel for FREE.

Windermere Lake Cruises Freedom of the Lake Ticket  

The Freedom of the Lake ticket is your gateway to Lake Windermere and you can take as many boat rides as you want with it.  

You can buy either a 24-hour pass or a 48-hour pass and this gives you access to all the routes above.  

Not only does this option save you a lot of money but it also gives you the option to explore the many towns, villages, and attractions on the lake stress-free without driving and taking in the sights on the water!

All you have to do is purchase your ticket at one of their main piers in Ambleside Waterhead, Bowness-on-Windermere, or Lakeside and once you have it, present your ticket before you get on any cruise.  

Windermere Lake Cruises Freedom of the Lake Ticket prices are;

• 24 hours: £16.30 for adults and £8.15 for children
• 48 hours: £19.50 for adults and £975 for children

7 places that you can stop on your Windermere Lake Cruise

So, now we have our Freedom of the Lake ticket, where do we want to sail to?!  

Well, there are plenty of places to visit around Lake Windermere to keep you occupied for a whole week. But, it is possible to cover some good ground in just one day too.  

Here are all the places you can stop on your Lake Windermere Cruise.  

1. Bowness-on-Windermere

The bustling Bowness-on-Windermere is probably the most popular place in the Lake District.

As well as hundreds of tourists flocking around the bay to set sail on a cruise ship, there are plenty of restaurants, cafés, shops, and attractions that draw people here too.  

I have to admit that Bowness wasn’t my favourite place in the Lake District.

It was too busy and hectic compared to the quieter villages and towns and that was in March in the off-season. I can’t imagine what it’s like in Summer!  

But, it is still worth checking out the area on your visit before you board your cruise.

Things to do around Bowness-on-Windermere

Walk around bowness bay  .

One of the most picturesque areas of Bowness-on-Windermere is Bowness Bay. This is just a short walk away from the Bowness Pier.

As well as providing a peaceful lakeside walk with spectacular views, you can watch the boats come into the harbour and feed the birds and swans on the shore too.

Along the shores of Bowness-on-Windermere, you have everything a holidaymaker here could want.

Ice creams, Fish ’n’ Chips, cafés, arcades, and all number of attractions to keep you busy.

Just watch out for the birds here. Although swans are lovely to look at they can get really aggressive.  

Go shopping in Bowness

Bowness is full of awesome little independent shops and big high street brand names too. So, you could easily shop until you drop here.  

From crystal shops, art galleries, Lakeland souvenirs, sweet stores, and shops selling all things Beatrix Potter.

I would leave lots of time (and spare change) to look around.  

Visit the World of Beatrix Potter  

If you didn’t get the memo, Beatrix Potter is a big name here in the Lake District.  

Potter was a famous writer and illustrator who was born in London in 1866. But, throughout her life, she took long trips to Scotland and the Lake District.

On her first visit to Windermere in 1882, she stayed at Wray Castle.

Her sketches and illustrations became very popular and eventually, the Tale of Peter Rabbit was born.  

This kick-started her career as a storyteller and she became a woman of means. She then used her profits to buy Hill Top Farm near Hawkshead.  

Over the course of her life, she wrote 23 enchanting stories.

These feature loveable characters like Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Many were set at Hill Top (more on how you can visit below!).

The World of Beatrix Potter at Crag Brow in Bowness is a delightful attraction that aims to breathe life into her stories and you can meet some of her favourite characters here too.  

As well as a short history of her life and influence on the Lake District, you can walk through her tales with their interactive exhibitions, walks, and gardens. Plus, there’s a café and a gift shop.

Take the Bowness – Hill Top bus service

When Beatrix Potter was looking to print her stories, she was advised and commissioned by Norman Warne. The two eventually fell in love and Warne proposed marriage.  

Although Beatrix accepted, this was highly disapproved by her parents who thought the match wasn’t suitable.

But, as Beatrix Potter now had her own fortunes she decided to purchase Hill Top where the two planned to live together in the countryside.  

Unfortunately, Warne died before they were married and so Beatrix decide to live at Hill Top by herself running the farm there.  

She later bought a considerable amount of land in the Lake District – 4,000 acres and 14 farms to be exact! At 47 she married her solicitor who advised and managed her property, William Heelis.  

Together the pair made considerable efforts to preserve the lands around the Lake District with Hardwicke Rawnsley, a founding member of the National Trust.  

On her death in 1943, she left every piece of the land she owned to the Trust for members of the public to enjoy.  

Today, Hill Top has been beautifully preserved as Beatrix Potter left it and you can visit it from Bowness-on-Windermere as part of an add-on to your Lake Cruise!  

In the summer season, alight at Bowness Pier and take the connecting Mountain Goat bus service 20 minutes to Hawkshead and visit Hill Top nearby.

Hire your very own boat

Did you know that as well as cruising on a ship around the Lake District, you can hire your very own boat to take out on Lake Windermere?

From traditional rowboats to self-drive motorboats you can explore the lake at your own pace and have some fun.  

Usually, hiring a boat can be extremely expensive but here it’s really reasonable, especially if you’re splitting the cost with friends.

You can hire a rowboat for 1-2 adults as little as £16 for one hour and a luxury motorboat for £35!

You don’t need to pre-book these just show up on the day to enquire on availability and rentals.

Where to eat in Bowness-on-Windermere

Bowness is full of incredible places to eat around the town and there is so much choice!

From traditional pubs, chip shops, and worldly cuisine, you can find pretty much anything your taste buds are craving.  

One of the restaurants I was really impressed with and took me by surprise on my visit was BAHA in Bowness.

Usually, when you visit restaurants in the Lake District it’s a traditional pub, that’s got that old-world charm.  

But, BAHA was like an Instagram haven with spectacular decor that sells amazing Asian-style street food.  

How it works is you take their pen and paper and mark off anything you want on their menu.

When you need service just wave their BAHA fan they have on the table and someone will be over in a jiffy.

I had an incredible meal of Korean Chicken steamed Bao Buns, Chicken Ramen, and their own homemade roasted marshmallows.

It was delicious and a nice change from traditional pub food.

2. Windermere Jetty Museum  

The Windermere Jetty Museum is a fantastic place that tells a big story about Lake Windermere and its colourful history over time.

Although it’s a new attraction in the area, it’s actually a renovation of the Windermere Steamboat Museum that opened in 1977.

It was brought together by George Pattinson who owned a priceless collection of historic boats. His original collection is one of the world’s most important boat collections that pertain to one area.

It includes boats from the 18th century all the way up to the present day.  

Highlights include Beatrix Potter’s rowboat, The Branksome from 1896, and some water speed record-breaking boats too!  

As well as learning about the boats and artifacts here, you can get acquainted with boat conservation in their workshop where the team regularly holds talks to answer questions.  

As a bonus, if you really wanted to experience some of Windermere’s history, you can even ride out on a heritage steamboat.

The Osprey is a steamer from 1902 that was renovated by the museum and now takes tourists out on the water.  

I absolutely loved my visit here as I learned so much about the area. I also treated myself to Sunday Lunch in their café overlooking the water.  

In Summer, you can take the Red Route service to the Windermere Jetty, and Windermere Lake Cruises will stop right outside the museum. In Winter, the museum is a 10-minute walk from Bowness Bay along with the Lakeside heading towards Ambleside.

3. Ambleside Waterhead Pier

Ambleside Waterhead Pier is your gateway to accessing some of the quaintest towns and villages in the whole of the Lake District.  

William Wordsworth was extremely fond of this beautiful area and you can follow his literary trail by visiting some of his properties and favourite places too.  

Although Ambleside is the nearest town to the Waterhead Pier, it is really easy to connect to the below nearby villages with the regular Stagecoach Bus Services.

Walk to Ambleside Village

Once you alight at Ambleside Waterhead Pier, a walk into the centre of Ambleside will take you around 10-15 minutes.  

As one of the most popular towns in the Lake District, there are plenty of attractions here to keep you busy.  

On your way down to the town, you can pop into the Stagshaw Garden owned by the National Trust. Or, head on in to find the Armitt Library & Museum centre that’s filled with historic books.  

The Bridge House from the 17th century is now an icon of the National Park and the most photographed building too. So, don’t forget to stop by and strike a pose.  

You can also visit the 19th century St Mary’s Church , pop in for a coffee at one of the many café on the Stock Beck Riverside, or go shopping in the stores on the High Street.  

A hidden gem that is well worth a visit while you’re in Ambleside is the Stock Ghyll Falls.   In only ten minutes’ walk, you can escape the town and find a 70-foot waterfall cascade in the forest! Click here for directions.

Visit Rydal

Time to walk from Ambleside to Rydal: 30 minutes  

If you have the time and aren’t too restricted, I would recommend heading out to Rydal after your visit to Ambleside. 

It’s a seriously underrated area that is home to a pretty hamlet and walks around Rydal Water.  

William Wordsworth lived here in Rydal Mount from 1813 until his death in 1850 and wrote some of his most famous works while in residence.

Today, the house is still owned by members of the Wordsworth family, and it’s open to the public.  

As well as Rydal Mount, you can visit the scenic Rydal Hall waterfall on the grounds of Rydal Hall,   pop into the Rydal St Mary’s Church, or head into the bed of daffodils at Dora’s Field.

Rydal Water is another one of Wordsworth’s favourite areas where he would picnic often. The circular walk around here provides some of the best views in the whole National Park.  

As well as chasing magnificent viewpoints like Loughrigg Terrace, you can find some man-made wonders like Rydal Caves. Originally part of a slate mine, these are now open to the public and are worth visiting.

Explore Grasmere

Now, the walk to Grasmere from Ambleside is quite a stretch, especially on a boat tour. So, click here for the Stagecoach Service timetable to Ambleside Waterhead to Grasmere.

William Wordsworth called Grasmere “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found” and I can see why now I’ve been there. It really is one of the most beautiful and quintessential villages in England!  

He first took up residence at Dove Cottage with his sister Dorothy in Town End after a tour of the Lake District with Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Then, once he married his childhood friend Mary Hutchinson and had three children, he moved to Allan Bank for more space.  

You can visit both of these amazing properties here in Grasmere that tell their own unique story of this life and the influence he had on the area.  

St Oswald’s Church is where Wordsworth is buried and you can visit the Wordsworth memorial garden nearby too.  

No visit to Grasmere would be complete without a stop at the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. This   tiny store has been serving up Sarah Nelson’s famous recipe since 1854.  

There are also plenty of amazing cafés and restaurants to check out around this beautiful village. Plus, walks to the countryside.

4.   Wray Castle  

Did you know that the Lake District had castles? Because I didn’t before I got here!

Technically, although it is called a castle, Wray Castle is a folly mansion home rather than a real historic castle but it is still magnificent to visit.  

It is a Gothic Revival style home that was built for Dr. James Dawson, a retired Liverpool surgeon, in 1840.  

It was actually built on his wife’s inheritance from a Gin distillery fortune. But, once the house was built she took one look and refused to live in it.  

Although William Wordsworth seemed to have something negative to say about every building that was built in the area, he actually liked Wray Castle. He said that it ‘added a dignified feature to the interesting scenery in the midst of which it stands.  

After Dr. Dawson died in 1875, the castle passed to his nephew Preston Rawnsley. Then it was sold to the National Trust in 1929.  

It is now a popular attraction that you can visit. As well as exploring inside the house, the views from the hilltop it’s perched on are amazing and you can see Windermere from there.

5. Ferry House

After you visit Wray Castle you can head out on a scenic four-mile hike down to Ferry House if you choose.  

Or, you can even catch a ferry here from Bowness-on-Windermere on the Cross Lakes Shuttle in the Summer.  

Ferry House is your gateway to the Western shore of Lake Windermere and attractions in the area. 

From here you can easily access Claife Viewing Station , which is a short steep walk from the Ferry House Jetty.   

This historic Victorian building that was built in 1790 offers amazing views of the lake and you can learn about its interesting history and how it was popular for Victorian tourists.

As well as the viewing platform the National Trust runs a popular café here overlooking Windermere.

If you’re planning a car-free adventure, you can head onto Hill Top near Hawkshead via the Mountain Goat Bus Service. Or, take the four-mile scenic walk along the Western shore towards Wray Castle.

6. Brockhole on Windermere

Brockhole on Windermere is a visitor centre that is popular in the summer season for outdoor activities, but it is open all year round for visitors too.  

In the winter season, this is a request stop on the Red Route, so you will have to let someone know if you want to hop off here…and hail down the boat if you want to go back on board!

Although I was a little anxious to do this, it was pretty easy to wave them down (even though I was alone) and get back on the boat.  

In summer, you won’t need to do this as it’s a dedicated stop on the route around.  

Brockhole House, Gardens & Café

The magnificent Brockhole House was built by Architect Dan Gibson and commissioned by William Gaddum who owned the land in 1897.  

He married Edith Potter who was Beatrix Potter’s Cousin. She would visit Brockhole on many occasions and fell in love with the views of Windermere and the Langdale Pikes.

Once Gaddum died, the family sold the house and it became a convalescent home following World War II.  

Eventually, the Lake District National Park purchased the property in 1966 and it became the very first National Park visitor centre in the UK.

Inside Brockhole House is a small shop selling locally made souvenirs plus the Brockhole Café, where you can have lunch overlooking the spectacular views.  

I treated myself to a yummy jacket potato here and it was much-needed comfort food for a winter’s day.  

There are also 10 acres of formal gardens that were planned out by Thomas Mawson during the Arts and Crafts design movement.  

He is a big name here in Cumbria as he designed many formal gardens in the area including Rydal Hall in 1909.  

Outdoor activities & countryside walks

As well as the formal gardens surrounding the house, Brockhole has over 30 acres of grounds to discover.  

So, it’s perfect for some countryside walks by the lakeside and also some adventure trails to keep the kids occupied.

But, if you wanted something a little more adventurous, there are plenty of activities for adrenalin junkies too!  

Zip lining, treetop treks, archery, kayaking, mini-golf, and a huge adventure playground will keep you occupied for hours here.

7. Lakeside  

Lakeside is a stop that can be accessed on the Yellow Route. It will take you around 40 minutes to reach Bowness-on-Windermere or you can do a 90 minute round trip.  

I decided to do the round trip as there wasn’t much I wanted to see in this area and I found out most attractions were closed here for winter.

However, I’m so glad I decided to keep going on the cruise as the views heading down this part of Lake Windermere were absolutely incredible!

You got to pass some of the unique historic buildings, fancy boathouses on the Lakeside and see some of the islands that are on Lake Windermere.

But, if you did fancy hopping off here, there are plenty of attractions in arms reach. Windermere Lake Cruises offer many combo tickets you can purchase for some serious savings.  

From here you can take the free bus shuttle service to the Lakeland Motor Museum that is home to over 30,000 exhibits and over 140 classic cars.

Or, head inside the Lakes Aquarium which concentrates on the conservation of marine life and has its own over lake tank and tunnel.

If you wanted to arrive in style then you can take the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway where you can park, rail, and sail around the area!  

Fell Foot is a Victorian Garden and park run by the National Trust where you can walk along the lakeside and enjoy views of the boats anchored on Windermere.

8. Take a Windermere Islands cruise

Did you know that there are 18 islands on Lake Windermere?! Yep, it was news to me on my visit too.  

You can even take an islands cruise on the Windermere Lake Cruises Blue Route from Bowness-on-Windermere to see them all.

The largest and only inhabited island is called Belle Isle and is 1 kilometre in length.

Centuries ago a Roman Governor from Ambleside built a villa on the island, it was a Lord’s residence in the medieval era and was even involved in the English Civil War as a Royalist stronghold.

Today, you’ll notice a peculiar round property called Island House built in 1774 by John Plaw’s design.

It was sold to the Curwen Family and it got its current name from Isabella Curwen who permanently renamed the island after herself.  

Apparently, William Wordsworth hated the building so much he called it a ‘tea canister in a shop window’ . He requested that tall trees be built in front of it to hide it from view!  

Belle Isle is private and you can’t land on it, but you can visit the other islands by boat if you hire one.

Or, admire them from afar on your cruise! Other islands include Lady Holme, Hen Holme, Crow Holme, The Lilies, Silver Holme, Bee Holme Snake Holme, and others.  

Facilities onboard Windermere Lake Cruises  

So, beyond seeing and exploring all the amazing sites from your cruise ship. There are some all-important facilities onboard too.  

The Lake District is partial to some rain in the area, so if you didn’t fancy sitting on the top deck, you can sit inside the heated cabins that will keep you dry and save you from being windswept.  

There is also a café/bar on the bottom deck that sells light snacks, hot and cold drinks, and also some beers and wines if you fancy treating yourself.  

Thankfully, there is also a toilet onboard that’s squeaky clean with toilet roll, running water, and soap!  

How to find and board Windermere Lake Cruises

You can board a Windermere Lake Cruise at any of the piers mentioned above, but the easiest ones to start your adventure are at Bowness, Ambleside Waterhead, and Lakeside.  

Each of these piers has a dedicated car park, but there are also public transport options as well.  

By Car: From the M6, take the A590 heading into the Lake District. Follow the brown tourist signs for Windermere Lake Cruises at Lakeside Pier. For Bowness and Ambleside piers follow the A591.  

By Train: Windermere Train station will bring you right into the heart of the Lake District for a car-free adventure. From Windermere train station, it’s a 25-minute walk to Bowness Pier. Or, catch an interchange service to Bowness Bay.  

By Bus: Stagecoach bus services in the Lake District can take you to Bowness Pier and Ambleside Waterhead. See here for details.  

Windermere Lake Cruise parking

Bowness, Ambleside Waterhead, and Lakeside all have parking areas with reasonable rates for all-day parking;

Bowness: park up at the Braithwaite Fold Car Park with 400 spaces. 6 to 10 hours is £7.00.

Ambleside Waterhead: I parked up in the FREE car park opposite the pier. But, there is a dedicated car park with 21 spaces that costs £5 for the whole day.  

Lakeside: 10 hours parking costs £4 in one of their 300 parking spaces right by the pier.

Windermere has arctic charr, brown trout, pike, perch, roach and eels, salmon and sea trout. You will need a rod licence to fish in any freshwater in the Lake District .

Boat launching and storage

Ferry Nab is the main public launching area with a public car park, toilet and shower facilities, public jetties, sailing dinghy storage and tender storage. It's the only public slipway available for power boats and large boats.

Small motor boats (five horsepower or less) may launch from Waterhead. Sailing dinghies, canoes and rowing boats may be launched from several areas on National Trust land, Rayrigg Meadow and Beech Hill.

There are several private and commercial launching points, predominately on the eastern shore. These include sailing and power boat clubs, caravan parks, commercial jetties and marinas and several outdoor pursuit and activity centres.

Eagle lake: a history of maine’s first and only cog railway.

Eagle Lake is the largest waterbody wholly within Acadia National Park. Decades before the Park was established, an enterprising Brewer native, Francis Clergue, devised a scheme for getting tourists to the top of Cadillac (Green) Mountain - a cog railway running from the shore of Eagle Lake to the summit, along with a steamer ferry to bring clients across the lake from Bar Harbor.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Volga River Cruises in Russia

Volga river cruising in Russia places you in another time. The longest and largest river in Europe stretches from Ivan the Terrible to Catherine the Great. Today, live along the central artery of Russia looks like it always has - the villages, the churches, the people, just like an old painting you have seen in a gallery.

The Volga flows through central Russia into the Caspian Sea and is often called the national river of Russia. 11 of the 20 largest cities of the country, including the capital Moscow, are in Volga's watershed. Some of the world's largest reservoirs can be found along the river, which has a symbolic meaning in Russian culture, referred to as Mother Volga (Volga Matushka) in Russian folklore and literature.

Explore the land of the Tsars while sailing down the historic Volga river, typically between Moscow and St Petersburg , the traditional homeports (of embarkation and debarkation). Tour landmarks are the Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow, the Hermitage and Catherine Palace in St Petersburg.

Once unthinkable as a cruise vacation destination, Russia is today more accessible than ever, with stops along its largest European lakes and rivers. For river travel lovers accustomed to European itineraries, the Russian experience will be quite different. Russia has a special feel of uniquely designed riverboats. Built to handle larger lakes (Lake Ladoga for example, is the largest European freshwater body of water), these vessels usually feature larger size and capacity (up to six decks), deeper draft, and most of them are refurbished instead of being newbuild.

The itineraries offered are activity-intensive in Moscow and St Petersburg, with long periods of cruising and less ashore time in the middle. Smaller "Golden Ring" cities (so named due to their historic significance) are full of icon-riddled monasteries and Orthodox churches. Most cruise lines hire local experts and fill the days of sailing along the river with lectures on country's history, cooking demonstrations and language lessons.

Most of the tours offered by the companies sailing along Volga River are identical, so customers choosing between the different itineraries should look at how the river ships spend the time within Moscow and St. Petersburg. Some lines have their guests stay onboard, which can be as far as 1 hour out of both cities. Others put their clients up at hotels near the center of the city, with several meals at customer's expense.

Compared with other river routes, Russia features a short season, between early May and late October, with high season in June (known as White Nights because of the endless daylight), July and August. Even if the weather is chilly, there are some advantages to sailing early or late: you'll beat the crowds which can make a visit to the Hermitage a bear. Most Russian museums lack air-conditioning, and while the climate is generally temperate, in the summer Moscow often experiences high humidity heat waves.

Remember to think about your Russian visa at least 2 months before your voyage, to have enough time to fill out the paperwork, including a lengthy online application. And don't forget that the Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Even in the cities, you'll rarely find signs in English, so learning some letters and a few phrases will help you get around.

Doninturflot-Orthodox Cruise Company

Orthodox Cruise Company operates a fleet of USSR-design large river ships and serves mainly foreign tourists. The parent company Doninturflot (established in 1992) is the shipowner and manages the fleet.

• Doninturflot started operations with the ships MS Maxim Litvinov, MS Mikhail Sholokhov and MS Sergei Dyagilev.
• Since 2002, Docturflot charters Akademik Glushkov (currently MS Igor Stravinsky) owned by OOO Rosflotinvest.
• In 2004 was acquired MS Anton Chekhov from Yenisei River Shipping Company (Russia).
• In 2006 were acquired MS Peter Tchaikovsky and MS Ivan Bunin from the Moscow-based cruise shipping company "Passenger Port".
• In 2008 was bought MS General Lavrinenkov from "Ukrrechflot" (Ukraine).
• In 2011 was bought MS Marshal Koshevoy (from Ukrrichflot, Ukraine) but in April 2013 the ship was sold to Viking Cruises (now operates as Viking Akun ).
• In 2016, was purchased MS Tikhi Don from the UK-based Grand Circle Travel company. In 2017, the ship started operations for Orthodox Cruise Company serving international tourists.

Imperial River Cruises Russia

"Imperial River Cruises Russia" was founded in 1992 and operates on inland waterways in both Russia and Ukraine. Company's chartered ships navigate on the rivers Volga, Don, Neva, Svir, Dnieper (also on the Danube) and the Russian lakes Onega and Ladoga.

The most operated itineraries are between Moscow and St Petersburg (visiting Uglich, Kostrom, Yaroslavl, Goritzy). Specially designed itineraries visit Vladimir, Suzdal, Zagorsk, Solovki Island. Also offered are itineraries Moscow-Volgograd and Moscow-Rostov, roundtrips from Kiev, and even grand voyages connecting two seas - Baltic and Black. Also offered are themed cruises - especially on food and music, with live performances by grand orchestras and choirs.

Imperial River Cruises Russia has an exclusive partnership with "Orthodox Cruise Company" - one of Russia's largest tour operators. As their names suggest, both companies target mainly foreign tourists - booking in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia. Ships' capacity varies between 180-250 passengers. English (or German) speaking licensed tour guides are provided on all excursions. The daily onboard entertainment program offers live musical performances, folk shows, enrichment lectures.

Russian river cruise deals

• Departure port (dock/berth), check-in, boarding and landing times are indicated on the company's website and on passenger boarding passes. Ship's exact departure time is clarified on the website the day prior departure.
• Kids discount ticket prices are offered for children up to 14 years of age (14-yo including), the age being fixed on departure day.
• Kids from 2 to 5 years of age (5-yo including) travel free of charge, but without providing an additional bed (if there are no free beds in the cabin). Shore excursions are also free of charge.
• Toddlers (kids under 2) travel free of charge, but the bed, food, and tour services are not provided. Extra beds in staterooms (baby cribs, cots) are not available on the ship.
• TWIN (double cabin) single supplement rate is 75%.
• Ticket prices are inclusive of 3 meals a day. Onboard dining includes Breakfast (buffet style, drinks - cocoa, milk, juices, hot-cold dishes), Lunch (buffet style) and Dinner (waiter-served, 1 Starter, 1 Main course (choice of 3 / meat-fish-vegetarian), 1 Dessert (choice of 2 or fruits). Water in pitchers is always provided. Tea/coffee is served.
• On embarkation day and disembarkation day (at the end of the voyage) meal times depend on landing times. If a land tour coincides with a meal time (lunch), passengers are provided with complimentary food at a local restaurant (cafe) or given "dry rations".
• Ticket price inclusive onboard events are Welcome Aboard ("bread and salt" ceremony), Welcome Cocktail (complimentary 1 glass of champagne or juice per person), "Tea Ceremony" (with traditional pies), "Vodka Show" (blini and vodka tasting), Cocktail Party (once per cruise, complimentary 1 cocktail per person), Captain's Dinner (gourmet menu, once per cruise), mulled wine or ice tea (weather-depending / upon returning from excursions), complimentary Coffee Station (coffee, hot water, packed tea, milk, cocoa, cookies), 1 bottled water (0.33l pp per day in cabins). Tickets are also inclusive of foreign language speaking guide services, onboard entertainment (language class, singing lessons, live music, nightly dancing music, Wheelhouse tour).
• Complimentary excursions are detailed in the ship's cruise itinerary program. Optional tours are available for onboard booking. For excursion services, foreigner passengers may be charged with additional fee pp per day (varies by cruise tour length).
• Cruise tickets don't include land transfers (excepting foreign travel agency bookings), beverages and snacks (in onboard bars-lounges), phone calls, sauna visits, optional excursions, travel insurance, gratuities, personal spendings. Ticket prices include 18% VAT.
• Smoking on the ship is allowed only in designated areas (marked with "Place for smoking" signs). Smoking is prohibited in all interior spaces and on open decks (except at designated areas).
• On most ships are available health gymnastics and morning exercises (led by a certified physician/ship's doctor), oxygen cocktail, dietary food.
• On most ships are provided (free of charge) the following medical services - emergency medical care (assistance required for sudden acute illnesses, conditions, exacerbation of chronic diseases), measurement of blood pressure and body temperature, primary treatment of wounds.
• Boarding starts 2 hours prior to departure. All passengers must be boarded at least an hour prior to departure. Late passengers missing their cruise tour are not refunded.
• Russia's main river cruise departure ports are Moscow , St Petersburg , Astrakhan , Nizhny Novgorod , Perm , Samara , Kazan , Volgograd , Rostov-on-Don , Saratov .

Russian cruise ships

Currently, in Russia is operated a huge fleet of over 200 river cruise ships. All these vessels were built during the USSR (Soviet Union) times, roughly in the period between 1950-1990. Depending on class and series, these boats differ in terms of size, equipment (different engine designs), passenger capacity, onboard facilities and venues, cabins (types and number). Amenities additionally differ by shipowner (cruise company).

All these old-design Russian ships were completely refurbished and rebuilt for their new shipowners, Some of these ships are operated (via partnerships or under charter) also by foreign companies (like Viking, CroisiEurope, Uniworld, AMAwaterways, Grand Circle, Nicko). During their multi-million-dollar drydock refits, vessels passenger capacities were considerably reduced to improve travel comfort and safety.

Most boats are of the following classes:

• "Rossiya" (Project 785, 36 vessels built 1952-1958)
• "Baykal" (Project 646, 15 units built 1953-1956)
• "Rodina" (Project 588, 49 vessels built 1954-1961)
• "Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya" (Project 26-37, 14 units built 1957-1962)
• "Dunay" (Project 305, 47 vessels built between 1959-1964)
• "Kuybyshev" (Project OL400, 9 units built 1975-1983)
• "Vladimir Ilyich" (Project 301, 22 vessels built between 1975-1983)
• "Dmitri Furmanov" (Project 302, 27 vessels built between 1983-1991)

Regardless of their age, all these motor ships undergo regular drydock refurbishments , machinery and safety checks, scheduled repairs (including annual surveys). Drydocks are every 5 years and include repairs, hull inspection, propulsion-steering inspection, general maintenance works.

Each ship is equipped with life-saving appliances (lifeboats and rafts) in amounts exceeding the boat's max passenger and crew capacity. Each cabin is equipped with lifejackets with illustrated instructions in several languages. All ships are equipped with modern fire-fighting systems. Crew and staff are experienced and highly professional certified employees.

Volga River cruise ports highlights

• St Petersburg (Russia's second-largest city - after Moscow) was built by Tzar Peter the Great in 1703. It is located in the Neva River delta (Gulf of Finland's east coast). Saint Petersburg includes the territories of more than 130 islands interconnected by over 300 bridges. The city has a huge number of cultural and historical sights, architectural landmarks, museums, magnificent palaces (Russian Tsars' former residences), grand parks, wide avenues, bridges, numerous monuments. Among its most famous tourist attractions are the Hermitage museum (housing over 2 million pieces of art). Two days is never enough to see everything in this remarkable city. However, passengers will usually visit the Hermitage, admire the city's 19th-century architecture during a canal cruise tour, take in a cultural performance, visit one of the Versailles-style palaces in St. Petersburg's countryside (Pushkin or Peterhof).
• Moscow (Russian Federation's capital and largest city) was founded in 1147 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky. The city was destroyed several times - by the Mongolians, Napoleon, the Nazis. The heart of the city lies in the Red Square, which contains Lenin's Tomb, St Basil's Cathedral, and GUM Department Store. Kremlin's red walls also border the square. Inside the fort are the Armoury (containing the Faberge eggs) and 9 onion-domed churches. Art-fans can seek out Pushkin Gallery or see a show at Bolshoi Theatre.
• Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities of Russia, and the largest city to visit during the middle of your Volga cruise. The town is famous for its gorgeous churches. It also offers several pedestrian-only streets full of shops and cafes, as well as a lovely embankment used as a park.
• Uglich has a provincial setting. It was found in the 10th century and was a scene of some of medieval Russian history's most remarkable events. Here were exiled the Ivan Terrible’s 7th wife and her son Tsarevich Dmitry. Soon after, Tsarevich was mysteriously murdered here. Soon after, a dedicated to this event church ("Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood") was erected. Within the Uglich Kremlin walls is the town's oldest building - "Prince’s Palace". Other attractions are St. John’s Church and the Transfiguration Cathedral.
• Astrakhan was founded at the end of the 13th century and is located on the Volga's left bank. Port’s activities extend 100 km downstream and over 300 km upstream along the river. The city is a major trading center and its main business is freight shipping (coal, timber, salt, food, industrial products). Astrakhan is not linked to the railroad network. Cargoes are transferred by floating cranes from river ships to seagoing vessels.
• Goritsy is a small village on River Sheksna, famous for its Resurrection Convent, At approx 4 ml (7 km) from Goritsy is Kirillov - a pilgrimage site with many historical and architectural monuments. Among those are the Kirillo-Belozerski monastery, Ferapont monastery (UNESCO site), 12 churches, 25 civil monuments.
• Kizhi Island (Lake Onega) is located approx 70 km (40 ml) to the northeast of Petrozavodsk. The island has two onion-domed churches. Also here is the 17th-century-built 22-domed church - constructed without using a single nail. Its "Church of the Transfiguration of our Savior" and "Church of the Intercession" were rebuilt several times and are preserved in their original 17th-century design.
• Mandrogi (Mandroga) is a small village on the Svir river recently created as a tourist attraction. It features small wooden log cabin houses. Its “town of masters” is a market for hand-made Russian art craft, including paintings, painted wooden dolls, embroidery, pottery. Other attractions are the elk nursery and the quail farm, horse-riding tours, food tasting (pastry), vodka tasting (museum of Russian vodka).
• Kostroma is also one of the Golden Ring cities, and once was one of Russia's 3 largest cities - after Moscow and Yaroslavl, It is located at the confluence of the rivers Volga and Kostroma. Among the attractions are the St Ipathy monastery, an open-air museum (traditional wooden architecture- izbas, mills, churches are gathered in one place).
• Kizhi is famous the whole world over. It has become the symbol of the grandeur of unique Russian culture. Visiting the Kizhi Islands gives a great chance to appreciate the enchanting medieval atmosphere and get acquainted with the customs and free spirit of men living in a spacious area with a rigorous climate
• Kazan. The largest port in the Volga basin, it transships cargoes transported by water alone or by water and rail. The port receives coal from Kuznetsk Basin for Kazan's heat and electric power plant, food and industrial products, and ships out products of city's enterprises and Siberian timber. The port includes Tsentral’nyi, Kama, and Volga cargo areas, as well as a number of landings, the biggest of which is Naberezhnye Chelny and Chistopol’. The basin of the Tsentral’nyi Cargo Area and passenger area are protected by a breakwater.
• Novgorod (Nizhniy Novgorod) is an ancient stronghold founded by Gran Prince Yuri as a frontier post, is now the 5th largest city of Russia as well as one of the main centers of river tourism in the country. In the 19th century, Nizhniy became the trade center of the whole state as it was the place of the biggest fair in the Russian Empire. A proverb of that time says: "Moscow is the heart of Russia, St. Petersburg is its head, and Nizhniy Novgorod - its pocketbook". The city was renamed "Gorky" in Soviet times, in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky, born there. Until 1990, Nizhniy Novgorod was “closed” to foreigners as USSR protected its military secrets. Nizhniy Novgorod is included in the UNESCO list of 100 cities constituting world cultural and historical value.
• Samara - during the Soviet period the city was named Kuybyshev, in honor of the Soviet party figure Valerian Kuybyshev. The shortest ways from Central and Western Europe to Kazakhstan, Siberia, and Central Asia run through Samara. The city has a rich cultural heritage: Alexey Tolstoy spent his childhood and youth there. Maxim Gorky started his literary career in the city - he worked in "Samara Newspaper". The Czech writer Yaroslav Gashek also worked in Samara, during the Civil war. Famous artists like Ilya Repin, Ivan Ayvazovsky, Vasily Surikov, lived in the city. During the Great Patriotic War, the Seventh Symphony of Dmitry Shostakovich was performed in Samara for the first time.
• Tver - the White Trinity Church (1564) is the sole ancient monument of Tver as in 1763, there was a great fire after which the city was rebuilt in Neoclassical style. There are also a lot of buildings of Catherine the Great. Tver State University is highly rated in the region. In 1931, Tver received the name Kalinin, in honor of the Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. The city was occupied by the German army in 1941. Only 2 months later it became the first big city in Europe liberated from the occupation.
• Ulyanovsk is located on the right bank of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. Port's activities extend 90 km downstream and 100 km upstream along the Volga. The port unloads mineral construction materials, food, and industrial products for the cities of Saransk and Uljanovsk, and ships out coal from Kuznetsk Basin, automobiles, foodstuffs. Its passenger area was rebuilt in 1969 and includes a large number of landings, the biggest being Melekess and Sengilei. The basin of the port of Ulyanovsk is protected by a breakwater.
• Saratov (founded in 1590) is the capital city of a huge province that as size equals the territories of Albania, Belgium and Switzerland combined. In the late 19th century, Saratov became a center for industry and trade, Among the city's attractions, are Moskovskaya street (Europe's longest straight street), one of Europe's longest bridges (2,8 km long), children’s theater, puppet theater, Russia’s oldest circus, musical conservatory, beaches, Art Galleries, Lipki Park, two large casinos.
• Volgograd (currently Stalingrad) was founded in 1589. This is a major port and shipping hub linking Donets Basin with the Urals and Upper Volga Region. It ships grain, coal, food, and industrial products upstream and receives mineral construction materials and timber. The port’s districts are situated within the cities of Volzhsk and Volgograd (Tsentral’nyi). Kamyshin is the biggest landing belonging to the port. Among Volgograd's attractions is the Mamayev Hill with numerous sculptures devoted to the WW2 victims and topped with the world’s largest freestanding statue “Mother Russia” (height 52 m / 171 ft). Adjacent is the "Museum of the Defense" (war artifacts, weapons, uniforms).
