Find out more about flights

  • This tour visits Switzerland, Germany, and Austria (plus the Czech Republic on the tour extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code SG6.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Zurich and depart from Vienna (or Prague on the tour extension).
  • Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own airport transfers.
  • When you arrive in Zurich, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to regularly be on the move throughout your trip.

Tour Pacing

This is a briskly paced tour. Tour pacing considers how often you’ll switch hotels, what you’ll do each day, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day on city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • During the visit to Neuschwanstein, travelers can expect to walk 25 minutes uphill on a steep incline to view the castle and further walking to get to the castles entrance, if they wish.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months from June to September, travelers can expect high temperatures from 70 F - 80 F and lows from 50 F - 60 F with occasional extreme heatwaves.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage-handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The group can’t miss any activities because of an individual’s needs.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, wheelchairs and walkers will be difficult to use and aren’t recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring any mobility aids with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.
  • Most transportation on this tour is by private motor coach. Private motor coaches have steps required to board and often do not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • You must be able to manage your own luggage while on tour, as porterage isn’t guaranteed. This includes when arriving at hotels or airports and boarding trains or ferries.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto racks—sometimes located above their seats.
  • You should be prepared to manage your bags during ferry transfers. This includes carrying them up and down boarding ramps, lifting them onto racks, and navigating spaces crowded with other people and motor vehicles.
  • Elevators in hotels aren’t guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets, so our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • All destinations visited on this tour operate on the European standard 220–240 volts and use Types C or F plugs with two small, round pins. You may also use a Type J plug with three small pins in Switzerland.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes three dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Swiss food is varied and sophisticated, and some popular dishes include sausages, breaded veal fillets, freshwater fish, and cheese dishes such as fondue and raclette. Be sure to try Swiss chocolate, which is among the world’s finest.
  • German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
  • Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
  • On the tour extension, Czech food is hearty, and you’ll find large portions of veal, beef, and potato dishes. Some of the world’s finest beers are produced here, including the original Budweiser and Pils.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Swiss franc in Switzerland and the euro in Germany and Austria (and the Czech koruna in the Czech Republic on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To help you feel prepared before going on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will lead your group. Their role is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each day’s activities, and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and can’t provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is having access to our 24/7 Emergency Support Team.
  • Our extensive network of global offices and our integration of ISO 31000 Risk Management Guidelines help this dedicated team anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible, iterative way.
  • Using a combination of extensive training, thorough incident response planning, and decades of experience, this team assists travelers and Tour Directors in case of emergencies—stepping in for everything from personal health concerns and injuries to major world events.
  • Our On-Tour Support team can also provide additional help to travelers on tour, arranging assistance from outside specialists and liaising with local and international authorities as needed. And if there’s an emergency on the road or at home, the team will facilitate and support communication between travelers and their families.
  • Switzerland, Germany, and Austria (and the Czech Republic on the extension) are 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.

There are plenty of options when it comes to exploring the continent. Some of the most popular destinations to visit on a tour of Europe include Italy, Greece, Spain, and Ireland.

Discover six things to experience your first time traveling to Europe →

Europe is a year-round destination with varying climates across its many countries and regions. The best time to visit Europe depends on what type of experience you’d like to have and which destinations you’ll be visiting.

  • Summer. A popular time to travel to Europe is summer because warm, sunny days lend themselves to exploring the outdoors. In July, the average high temperature in London, England, is in the 70s Fahrenheit—while in Rome, Italy, the average high is in the 80s.
  • Spring and Fall. Some travelers prefer to travel on our Europe tour packages during the spring and fall because temperatures are more comfortable and popular sites are less crowded.

With its rich history, vibrant culture, and fantastic food, Italy is a popular destination for your first European trip. But plenty of other countries are worth visiting depending on your interests and concerns about international travel. For example, if the language barrier makes you nervous, Ireland, Scotland, or England make great first-time trips for visiting Europe.

Yes! The holidays are an exciting time to travel on our Europe trips because they offer an exceptional opportunity to visit Europe’s Christmas Markets  and to experience countries’ unique holiday traditions. The holidays are a magical time in many European countries, allowing you to soak in the seasonal ambiance, enjoy festive food, and pick up unique gifts.

Thankfully, that’s a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, so you’re sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.

Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodie’s delight. That’s because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything you’ve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.

Wondering what to eat in Italy? Check out these regional dishes →

Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While you’re guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food you’ll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

While individual countries take pride in their languages, English is widely spoken in Europe.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
  • Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
  • Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.

EF Go Ahead Tours Review 2024: Are their guided tours worth it?

EF Go Ahead Tours Review 2024: Are their guided tours worth it?

EF Go Ahead Tours is a world-leading guided tour company offering a comprehensive travel package with local guides and authentic travel experiences. You've likely heard of them before, but are they really worth it? What do they offer, and how do they stack up to other guided tours?

go ahead tours central europe

Guided tours are a great way to travel, make new friends, and enjoy new experiences without the hassle of planning the logistics of the trip.

While guided tour companies boast of convenience, they tend to fall short when it comes to flexibility and customization. Hence, many travelers resort to planning their trips by themselves using helpful apps like  Pilot .

But, if you still prefer a guided tour with some level of flexibility, EF Go Ahead Tours is definitely a choice to consider.

EF Go Ahead Tours is one of the world's largest tour companies that host small group tours with unique, authentic experiences. A great benefit of joining an EF Go Ahead Tour is that they allow travelers the benefits of hosting a free private tour with larger groups.

However, are the experiences they're offering for you? What are the pros and cons? Here's our review of EF Go Ahead Tours!

EF Go Ahead Tours Logo.

What is EF Go Ahead Tours?

EF Go Ahead Tours  is a brand under the EF Tours group that offers both guided and fully customizable tours to destinations worldwide. It caters to young and older travelers, admitting anyone from age six and above (under-age travelers accompanied by adults). The number of travelers in each group is capped at 14-38, and small group tours only admit 10-22 people.

EF Go Ahead Tours aims to provide you with meaningful tours with flexibility and personalization. It also promotes responsible travel by supporting local communities and adopting sustainable practices.

EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app helps you easily manage your bookings and view tour details. It is available for both Android and iOS devices.

What does EF Go Ahead Tours offer?

  • Tour directors and local guides:  A tour director is assigned for each group to be in charge of all logistics of the trip. They will accompany you throughout, sharing insider knowledge and background information about places you visit.
  • Accommodation:  3-4 star hotels that provide comfortable amenities while being located in close proximity to the city.
  • Meals:  Breakfast and some other meals are included in the pricing. Primarily, they focus on local food and beverage specialties. They will arrange meals meeting your dietary requirements if necessary.
  • Transportation:  Transport between airport and hotels and other transportation required during the trip are included in the package. While flights are not included, you can get EF Go Ahead Tours to arrange them for you at an additional cost.

EF Go Ahead tour benefits.

How does EF Go Ahead Tours work?

You can browse for tours by  Destination  or  Travel Styles  on the website. Travel styles are further categorized as  Trip Type, Interests, Seasonal and Special Events , and  With Your Own Group .

For example, all the related tours will appear if we pick Adventure Tours under travel styles. You can filter the results further by destination, dates, duration, price, and travel style.

Check out its details, trip highlights, prices, reviews, etc. There's a list of FAQs below related to the trip and other similar tours for you to compare and choose from.

What destinations does EF Go Ahead Tours cover?

EF Go Ahead Tours covers many of the popular destinations worldwide. Here's a list of where EF Go Ahead Tours covers:

  • Europe:  Ireland, Italy, Greece, Iceland, England, France, and Germany
  • The Americas:  United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, and Belize
  • Africa & Middle East:  Egypt, Kenya, Israel, South Africa, Turkey, and United Arab Emirates
  • Australia & Asia:  Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, India, and Thailand

Benefits of EF Go Ahead Tours

  • Worry-free guarantee

If you cancel the booking within 60 days from the reservation date, you are entitled to a full refund. EF Go Ahead Tours also allows you to change the date of tour or destination up until your final payment day. It helps you book with confidence knowing there's ample time to make changes.

In addition to covering many destinations worldwide, the tour company also offers a diverse range of tours. Group trips for solo travelers provide ample privacy while facilitating socialization. In addition, there are cruise tours, rail tours, food & wine tours, battlefield tours, winter tours, and many more!

  • Fewer people

The worrisome factor about large group tours is they can seem too crowded and noisy to have a quality experience. There's also less opportunity to get to know other travelers better. In this case, small group tours offer a more intimate travel experience. Guides can give individual attention and advice easily. Overall, it makes the trip more enjoyable and memorable.

  • Flexibility

If you like to travel with friends but don't have the liberty to plan, get EF Go Ahead Tours to plan one for you. You can explain your requirements and get a whole new itinerary done or choose one they offer. Invite your friends and/or family, choose your travel dates, and enjoy. There's also the option of organizing faith-based tours!

Adventure travel experiences.

Drawbacks of EF Go Ahead Tours

  • Increase the number of tours

While there's a variety of tours, different trip options under each category are quite limited compared to other guided tour companies like  G Adventures  or  Contiki . For example, there's only one tour option for India. They can also add more countries to their list of destinations.

  • Improve refund and cancellation issues

Customers had faced refund and cancellation issues for scheduled or booked tours during the pandemic. There were complaints of EF Go Ahead Tours not refunding the money as per its cancellation policy. But, it's a common problem that many tour companies dealt with their customers following the Covid outbreak. We hope they are resolved now.

EF Go Ahead Tours vs. EF Ultimate Break

The most significant similarity between EF Go Ahead Tours and EF Ultimate Break is that they are managed by EF Education First Tours. This means that you'll most likely be getting a similar refund, cancellation, and customer service policies between the two tours.

EF Go Ahead Tours identifies itself as the 'older sibling' of EF Ultimate Break. Ultimate Break Tours is geared towards college students and folks aged 18-29, while Go Ahead Tours admits anyone 6 and above. So, the tours offered also tend to be different from each other.

EF Go Ahead Tours has a wide variety of tours catering to all age ranges. It also provides both private and group tours. EF Ultimate Break only offers group tours and are tailored to suit youth's preferences.

Read our  review of EF Ultimate Break  to learn more!

Is EF Go Ahead Tours worth it?

Yes! We came across great GoAheadTours reviews online about the unique and immersive experience EF Go Ahead Tours offers. Go Ahead tours are a great way to travel if you prefer to join a guided tour.

Like  Flash Pack , it's an excellent choice for older travelers looking for trips that involve activities beyond partying and drinking. Overall, the tours are ideal for anyone, really.

Our Rating: 4.5/5

  • Variety of tours
  • Smaller groups
  • A limited number of tours
  • Refund and cancellation issues

When you join us on one of our Buenos Aires tours , you’ll wander along wide, regal avenues, admire sultry tango dancers, and join real-life cowboys for steak cooked over an open fire. Buenos Aires truly is a melting pot of cultures and experiences.

“Our day touring Buenos Aires with a night of tango was so immersive and memorable,” said traveler Alex after joining our Chile to Argentina: Santiago, Patagonia & Buenos Aires tour . “So many cultural experiences all in one day, so much to take in!” If you’re visiting Buenos Aires, especially if it’s for the first time, chances are you’ll want to experience a little bit of everything. Below, you’ll find our list of the best things to do in Buenos Aires for first-time visitors—though we think chances are good that you’ll want to come back and experience them again and again.

Buenos Aires; tango and museum

1. Attend a tango show

If you’re trying to figure out what to do in Buenos Aires, it doesn’t get much better than this. Tango performances are among the best of what Buenos Aires has to offer and are a must-see, especially if this is your first time in the city. Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango, and you won’t have to look too hard to find dancers lost in this passionate art form. Join the Tango Show & Dinner excursion offered on our Buenos Aires tours to watch a dinner performance by accomplished tangueros, or tango dancers, or learn some basic steps on the Buenos Aires Tango Lesson, Show & Dinner excursion on our Chile to Argentina: Santiago, Patagonia & Buenos Aires tour . “I loved the optional tango excursion on my tour,” said staffer Valerie after joining our Grand Tour of South America: Brazil, Argentina & Peru . “That dance is impossibly cool, and the performances were really impressively done.”

2. Soak up art, history, and science in the museums

Buenos Aires is one of our favorite cities for world-class museums. The accessibility of renowned artwork is one of the many reasons why Buenos Aires is often called “ The Paris of South America .” Spend some free time on your trip to Buenos Aires perusing the extensive collection at the National Museum of Fine Arts, or pop into the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (or MALBA, for short) to see works from modern South American masters such as Frida Khalo, Diego Rivera, and Antonio Berni. If science or history is more your speed, check out the Museo de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia (the city’s oldest science museum) or Museo Evita instead. “I consider myself a museum lover, and while studying abroad in Buenos Aires, I visited close to 50 different museums!” said staffer Julietta. “One of my favorites was Museo Evita, which immortalizes the life of Eva Perón. She was more than a political presence, and she was one of Argentina’s most-loved first women.”

Buenos Aires; tomb of Evita and Palermo Parque sculpture called Floralis Genérica

3. Visit the tomb of Evita

In the heart of Buenos Aires’ elegant Recoleta neighborhood lies Recoleta Cemetery, a tranquil labyrinth of intricate tombs, mausoleums, and statues. The cemetery feels more like a city than a graveyard, with shady stone walkways winding through densely packed above-ground tombs. When you join one of our Buenos Aires tours , we’ll take you to admire the Art Deco, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic mausoleums that house some of Argentina’s most influential figures, including Eva Perón. If you want to explore more of the impressive Recoleta neighborhood during your free time, head to the nearby El Ateneo Grand Splendid. This former theater is now one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and even features a cafe on its stage where you can sip coffee while you read.

4. Hang out in the parks of Palermo

“I grew up in Buenos Aires, and the parks in the Palermo neighborhood are my favorite because I used to go there with my grandparents,” said staffer Gustavo. “There is an area of one park with a beautiful white bridge, and it’s a great place for family fun. Go to ride peddle boats, eat garrapiñadas (candied almonds), and relax in nice picnic areas.” When you join our Grand Tour of South America: Brazil, Argentina & Peru , you’ll have the opportunity to stroll through some of South America’s most gorgeous parks and gardens, including those in Buenos Aires’ hip Palermo neighborhood. We especially love Parque Tres de Febrero (also known as Bosques de Palermo or the Palermo Woods) for its sprawling green spaces and picturesque El Rosedal (which translates to Rose Garden), and the Jardín Japonés, or Japanese Garden, for its arched bridges and Shinto gate.

Buenos Aires; Casa Rosada and Palacio Barolo

5. Take a stroll through Plaza de Mayo

Plaza de Mayo, the birthplace of 1810’s May Revolution, which saw Argentina split from Spain, is the oldest and most historically significant public square in the city. One of our favorite things to do in Buenos Aires is stroll through the plaza and stand beneath the famous “Evita balcony” on the Casa Rosada, or pink house, Buenos Aires’ presidential palace. It’s where Juan and Eva Perón stood to address the people of Buenos Aires. Join us on a tour of Buenos Aires to visit the square and pop into the Metropolitan Cathedral, where Pope Francis led mass when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires.

6. Admire the view from Palacio Barolo

A short walk down Avenida de Mayo from Plaza de Mayo, you’ll find the architecturally fascinating Palacio Barolo. The landmark building was inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and is split into three parts: inferno, purgatory, and paradise. Although Palacio Barolo is mostly populated with offices, tours of the building are open to the public, and you can join one during your free time on a tour of Buenos Aires . There’s a lighthouse tower at the top of the building that offers spectacular views of the city from a glass dome.

Buenos Aires; La Boca buildings and cafe seating

7. Explore the La Boca neighborhood

The Italian-influenced La Boca neighborhood, with its iconic El Caminito, a narrow street of technicolor houses, is one of staffer Jamie’s favorite places to visit in Argentina . “One of my favorite days on tour in Buenos Aires was the day we walked through the La Boca neighborhood, which is as colorful and lively a place as I’ve ever seen,” she said after returning from our Chile to Argentina: Santiago, Patagonia & Buenos Aires tour . “This is surely one of the best places to visit in Argentina. La Boca is an old Italian port, an artist haven, and a hub for both tango and soccer. One of my favorite things was looking up at the colorful houses and seeing life-size puppets standing on the balconies—everyone from soccer legend Maradona to the famed Evita, former First Lady of Argentina, were represented.” If you’re a sports fan, be sure to check out the Boca Juniors’ La Bombonera soccer stadium when you’re in the area—it’s just a five-minute walk from El Caminito.

8. Sip coffee at a quaint cafe

Buenos Aires’ cafe culture rivals that of some of the major cities in Italy and Spain. Everywhere you turn, you’ll find streets studded with historic cafes, each more charming than the last. Don’t let your trip to Buenos Aires go by without sipping an espresso or a cortado on a leafy, streetside patio—especially if it’s your first time in this effervescent city.

Buenos Aires; Mercado San Telmo and Teatro Colón

9. Browse the Mercado San Telmo

San Telmo is the oldest barrio in Buenos Aires and is a lively neighborhood characterized by historic mansions, colonial architecture, and cobbled streets. Pass through on our Rio, Iguazú Falls & Buenos Aires tour to admire the welcoming cafes and antique shops, or pop into the historic Mercado San Telmo on our Food & Wine: Flavors of Chile & Argentina tour to sample empanadas, shop for souvenirs, and try some of the best coffee in the city. If you happen to visit San Telmo on a Sunday, you’ll find the cobblestone streets lined with stalls selling antiques, crafts, and street foods at the weekly Feria de San Telmo.

10. Step inside one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses

The Teatro Colón, located in Buenos Aires’ city center, is considered one of the greatest opera houses in the world for its stunning architecture and near-perfect acoustics. Construction of the building began in 1889 and took nearly 20 years to complete, with two out of three of the theater’s architects meeting untimely ends before they could finish the project. Despite the tragedies and delays, the theater opened in 1908 as one of the most stunning opera houses in the world, with seven levels of intricate woodwork, gilded decor, and hand-painted frescoes. When you join our Food & Wine: Flavors of Chile & Argentina tour , you’ll have the opportunity to step inside the building and admire the stage, which has been graced by artists such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, ballerina Anna Pavlova, and famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti.

Buenos Aires; Puente de la Mujer and authentic asado

11. Walk across the Puente de la Mujer

The Puente de la Mujer, or Women’s Bridge, is one of the most famous Buenos Aires, Argentina, attractions. The striking pedestrian-only bridge stretches across the port of the city’s Puerto Madero waterfront district and was designed to represent a couple dancing tango. The bridge’s mast rotates, swinging the bridge open and allowing boats to pass through. When you explore Puerto Madero during a free afternoon on a trip to Buenos Aires , be sure to check out one of the neighborhood’s many high-end restaurants and cocktail bars.

12. Enjoy an authentic asado

One of our top things to do in Buenos Aires is to enjoy the city’s epic food scene , and there’s no better place to do that than at an authentic asado, a social barbeque. Head to the Pampas, the countryside outside of Buenos Aires, on the Estancia Visit: Argentine Barbecue & Gaucho Show excursion offered on our Buenos Aires tours to enjoy a barbecue lunch as you watch gauchos (traditional ranch hands) put on a show on horseback. If you don’t feel like leaving the city, join the Argentinian Cultural Dinner excursion on our Food & Wine: Flavors of Chile & Argentina tour to try your hand at making local specialties before sitting down to a dinner of steak and with a glass of malbec. Regardless of where you are, if you’re a meat-eater in Argentina, you have to try the beef. “The steak in Buenos Aires was unforgettable,” said traveler Eric after returning from our Grand Tour of South America: Brazil, Argentina & Peru .

Things to know before you go

There are a few things you should keep in mind before you join us on a trip to Buenos Aires , especially if it’s your first time visiting this dynamic city.

  • Days start late, and nights run later. Porteños, or people of the port, as the locals call themselves, tend to be night owls. Many shops around Buenos Aires won’t open until 10 a.m., and some restaurants don’t open their doors until 8 p.m. Locals tend to go to dinner around nine or ten, and clubs run from midnight to well after the sun comes up.
  • Cash is king. More and more places accept credit cards, but we strongly advise you to keep some local currency on hand for smaller establishments and street vendors that may not.
  • Keep your valuables secure. Like any major city, Buenos Aires has its fair share of petty crime. Be wary of pickpockets and keep your valuables safely hidden.
  • Buenos Aires is pretty big. The different neighborhoods within the city are generally very walkable, but if you set out on your own during your free time, you may want to consider hopping on a city bus or using an app like Uber or Cabify to get around.
  • Learning some Spanish is always a good idea. When you join us on a tour of Buenos Aires , your expert Tour Director will be there to introduce you to many of the best things to do in Buenos Aires, but it never hurts to learn a few key Spanish phrases so that you can communicate should you choose to set out on your own.

Whether you’re ready to visit Buenos Aires for the first time or the fiftieth, join us on a tour today!
