Located in the vibrant city of Miami, PortMiami is one of the world's busiest cruise terminals. With its modern facilities and convenient access to the city's renowned beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural attractions, it offers an exciting departure point for cruises to the Caribbean and beyond. Miami is considered the Cruise Capital of the world , with over 7 million cruise passengers visiting it’s port each year. There are numerous place to shop , along with restaurants and things to do near the Port of Miami . Cruises originating from Miami embark from the Port of Miami which is located at 1015 N. America Way, Miami, Florida.

Miami International Apirport is just eight miles away from PortMiami. The port caters to travelers with on-port parking and easy access to public transportation, taxes and rideshares.

PortMiami is situated on Biscayne Bay and supports 335,000 direct and indirect jobs. The port also processes cargo through its ports. 

The port’s recent infrastructure expansion added three new cruise terminals with ongoing construction of future facilities. The port is also finalizing its Shore Power Program that will give the port the capability to plug three cruise ships into shore power. This will allow a cruise ship to turn off their primary engines while docked, reducing air emissions. 

Directions to Port of Miami

Driving from the north, you may take I-95 and exit at 3B Bayside. Keep going south and turn left into Northeast 5th Street, where you will eventually get to the bridge into the Port of Miami.

From the south, take I-95 North and take Northwest 2nd Street exit. Keep going and then turn right toward Northwest 5th Street. From here you will see the Port of Miami Bridge which will take you into the port entrance.

If you are travelling in from the Interstate, look for the signs for the PortMiami tunnel. It’s a quick and free way to get directly to the port without having to get off the Interstate and drive in downtown Miami.

Royal Caribbean’s Terminal A

Cruise Terminal A – the Crown of Miami –  was built specifically for Royal Caribbean in 2018, enabling it to handle Royal’s largest ships with the latest technology for an expedited check-in process.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of Seas has its home port in Miami. The Titanic was once the world’s largest cruise ship. Over five times the size of the Titanic, the Icon of the Seas is over 1000 feet long and 20 decks tall.

Its 55 foot onboard waterfall is the largest waterpark at sea. Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Icon of the Seas will reduce its impact on port of Miami, but will also have a shoreside power connection that will allow it to plug into the electric grid while docked in port. 

Norwegian’s Terminal B

Cruise Terminal B – the Pearl of Miami – was built for Norwegian Cruise Line and opened in 2021 and can accommodate ships carrying as many as 5000 passengers.

Miami Cruise Terminals C, D & E have been built with mega-ships holding up to 5000 passengers. In order to move passengers through the terminal as quickly as possible, the highest-technology in screening is available, as well as a conveyor system, similar to an airport, to retrieve your luggage when you disembark.

Carnival’s Terminal F

Carnival’s expansion to Miami’s Terminal F broke ground in early 2021 in preparation for Carnival’s newest ship set to debut in 2022 – the Carnival Celebration.  Here’s a video of the proposed terminal renovations:

Opened late 2021 with the arrival of Virgin’s Scarlett Lady, this state of the art terminal  – Palm Grove – is located on the north west side of the port (see link to map below).

MSC’s Terminal AA/AAA

MSC has broken ground on their new cruise terminal slated to open in 2023 and will be able to hold up to three ships at once. Here’s a rendering of the new terminal, built in partnership with Fincantieri (who is currently building the MSC Seashore at their shipyard in Italy).

Miami cruise port: A guide to cruising from Florida’s biggest port

If you love cruising, you're probably already acquainted with the Port of Miami cruise terminal, officially called PortMiami. In 2023, Miami was the busiest cruise port in America. According to PortMiami data, it welcomed 7.3 million passengers in the fiscal year.

Miami is the ideal place from which to set sail to the Bahamas , Caribbean , Panama Canal , Mexico and beyond. More than 20 cruise lines sail from PortMiami, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a ship and itinerary that works for you.

The port is also easy to get to. Airports near Miami cruise port include Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), and there are plenty of points hotels for a pre- or post-cruise stay.

Sailing out of Miami is a rite of passage, and the sailaway is truly one of the most beautiful in the world. As your ship sets off, timed with the setting sun, the city's high-rises and golden beaches glisten as they bid you bon voyage.

Airports near Miami cruise port

Miami International Airport is just a short drive — about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic — from the cruise port. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is an alternative, and the drive to PortMiami from there takes about an hour.

Tons of airlines fly to MIA from U.S. gateways, including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country and United Airlines.

If you'd prefer to fly through FLL, your choices include Alaska, Allegiant Air, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest, Spirit and United.

There are sometimes buy one, get one free airfare opportunities when flying to these airports. Consider the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card and get a Companion Fare certificate on the card's anniversary. The certificate allows a companion to fly with you for $99 (plus taxes and fees from $23) each account anniversary after you spend $6,000 or more on purchases within the prior anniversary year. It's valid on all Alaska Airlines flights booked on alaskaair.com.

You can also bring a companion along for free (actually, just the cost of the ticket's taxes) if you have the Southwest Companion Pass . Delta also offers a companion certificate via several of its American Express-branded credit cards.

Outbound flight times don't always dovetail perfectly with your cruise line's disembarkation time, so you might find yourself with time to kill at the airport.

Make sure you carry a credit card with airport lounge access as a benefit. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® gives you access to Priority Pass lounges, while The Platinum Card® from American Express will open the door to the Amex Centurion Lounge at MIA .

How to get to the Miami cruise port

There are many ways to get from the Miami airport to the cruise port, including:

Cruise line transfers

You can usually buy a transfer between the airport and the cruise terminal (or your hotel) directly from your cruise line. Sometimes, this is reserved for travelers who've purchased their airfare from the cruise line, but you or your travel agent can call to ask if you can buy the transfers a la carte.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line offers transportation between both MIA ($22.99 per person) and FLL ($36.99 per person) and PortMiami on embarkation day. The line says your plane should arrive no later than noon (for MIA) or 11:30 a.m. (for FLL) on embarkation day.

Hotel shuttles

Select hotels near both MIA and PortMiami offer shuttle service to the port. Free transfers are less common than they once were. Inquire when you make your reservations. For an idea of the transfer cost, the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Miami Brickell Downtown offers a shuttle to PortMiami for $8 per person.

Independent airport shuttle from Miami airport to the cruise port

A variety of local companies operate shared and private van shuttles and limo services from both MIA and FLL to area hotels and the port. Consider vendors like Express Shuttle Miami, which offers shared rides for around $15 per person from MIA and $25 per person from FLL.

Prices will go up for private rides and depending on the number of passengers in your party and the type of vehicle requested (i.e., sedan, SUV, van, etc.).

Independent van/car services

Car and van services also offer private pick-up and drop-off. The fare from MIA to PortMiami is about $100 for a standard vehicle that accommodates three people. Add $20 if you need a child car seat. A van accommodating up to 10 people is priced around $150.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Hailing a taxi to take you to PortMiami is simple. Taxi stands are on the arrival (ground) level of the airport (outside baggage claim).

While there used to be a flat rate fare to the cruise port, that's no longer the case. You'll need to pay by the meter. The rate is $2.95 for the first 1/6 mile then $0.85 for each additional 1/6 mile up to one mile; then, it's $0.55 for each 1/6 mile thereafter. Waiting time is $0.40 per minute. (There is a $2 fee for originating from the airport or PortMiami.)

"A minimum fare of $15 is established for trips originated at MIA or the Port of Miami, regardless of what the meter reading shows. If the meter shows a number greater than $15, then the greater number shown on the meter shall be paid," according to Miami-Dade County.

Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft are also an option. Pickup zones are on level 1, arrivals.

UberX can run around $20 and UberXL around $30. Premier and Premier SUV cars can run around $35-55. All prices can vary during traffic or high-demand times. The Uber ride from FLL will be more expensive: around $40 for Uber X and $65 for UberXL. Premier and Premier SUV cars run from $80-100 from FLL.

Public transportation from nearby airports or hotel district

From MIA: Board Metrorail's Orange Line (look for signs to the Metrorail Train Station) to Downtown Miami, which will take less than 30 minutes. The fare is $2.25 per person. It's about a 1 1/2-mile walk from the Freedom Tower station to the port, so you'll want to grab an Uber or taxi from there. Or take the Miami Trolley Coral Way route (free) all the way to the port. From FLL: Take the Tri-Rail commuter train to MIA ($3.75 per person on weekdays and $5 per person on weekends). Then board Metrorail's Orange Line ($2.25 per person) and head downtown to the Freedom Tower stop. Finally, board the free Coral Way Route Trolley and disembark at PortMiami.

Miami cruise port parking

On-site parking

There are parking garages at seven Miami cruise terminals, plus surface lots at terminals D and E. Each lettered parking facility corresponds with the terminal of the same name with the exception of the "K" parking garage, which is closest to Terminal J.

If you're driving an over-length vehicle (RV or vehicle with trailer), head to Surface Lot E, which has extra-large spots. Extra fees apply (see below). On embarkation day, the parking facilities are open and staffed by a parking attendant from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You may drop off your luggage at the terminal before parking. A free shuttle runs from each parking facility to the terminal. Security patrols all parking garages and lots.

Parking starts at $22 per night. Royal Caribbean's Terminal A Garage charges a higher rate of $35 per day.

Accepted modes of payment include cash and major credit cards (but not debit cards). However, Garage J is prepaid only (pay when you arrive), and vehicles need to display a special decal throughout the duration of the cruise.

Park-and-cruise

Some hotels in the area, such as the InterContinental at Doral Miami, sell packages that include a hotel stay and parking for the length of your cruise. Others offer cheap paid parking for the Miami cruise port in their lots (even if you're not staying at the hotel), with prices ranging from $6 to $15 per day. Just factor in the time and money you'll need to travel from the hotel's parking lot to the port and vice versa.

What's the best parking option for the Miami cruise port? It depends on your preferences. For the convenience of being right at the cruise port, choose an on-site lot. To save a few bucks, park at a nearby lot or hotel and commute from there to your cruise terminal.

Hotels near Miami cruise port

Thankfully, there's no shortage of points hotels in Miami. Your toughest job will be deciding which one is best for your needs and if you prefer to be close to the cruise port, the beach or downtown. Or, you might prioritize hotels near Miami airport with a shuttle to the cruise port.

Your choice will also depend on how long you're staying, what you'd like to see while you're in town and how many hotel points you have to spend.

Hilton hotels near Miami cruise port

For a quick overnight before a cruise, we like the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Miami/Brickell Downtown (41,000 to 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night).

It's in a fantastic location with easy access to the free Metromover that can take you to places like the Bayside Marketplace (which is also walkable).

The hotel has several on-site restaurants and is near plenty of others; it also has a shuttle to the port for about $10 per passenger. The chain's free breakfast is a great way to start the day; it'll hold you over until you get on the ship and can enjoy a leisurely lunch before sailaway.

Hyatt hotels near Miami cruise port

If you'd prefer to be on the beach, Hyatt has some solid options that won't break the bank, including Dream South Beach and Hyatt Centric South Beach Miami (both from 17,000 points per night).

If you're a Globalist elite with Hyatt, both the Hyatt Regency Miami and Hyatt Regency Coral Gables (both from 9,000 points per night) get good marks when it comes to complimentary upgrades and elite perks. And, if you just want a cheap place to rest your head, there are two Hyatt Place options starting at 6,500 points per night near Miami airport.

Marriott hotels near Miami cruise port

In the same neighborhood as the Hampton Inn, you'll find the upscale, full-service JW Marriott Miami. Nights start at 35,000 points, so you can use a Marriott 35k free night certificate on some dates of the year. Depending on your elite status tier with Marriott Bonvoy , you might be eligible for free breakfast at this hotel.

If you have kids or additional time, the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort & Spa (starting at 40,000 points per night), farther out in Aventura, is a terrific bet since it has its own water park and lazy river.

If you're young and traveling with friends, the Moxy South Beach (starting at 30,000 points per night) was designed just for you. While it might not have all the amenities more upscale hotels have, it's got great views and rooms with quad bunk beds.

Non-points hotels

Miami is packed with all sorts of hotels that don't participate in a traditional loyalty program.

For a special occasion splurge, go for the Acqualina Resort & Residences on Sunny Isles Beach. The grounds are stunning and you'll feel as if you're in a palazzo in the Mediterranean somewhere.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach is for anyone who wants a glimpse of a rock star or celebrity ... sightings are common at this trendy spot.

Restaurants near Miami cruise port

PortMiami is in close proximity to many desirable neighborhoods so there's no lack of opportunity to find both destination dining and good local eats.

Little Havana along Calle Ocho (SW Eighth Street), the place to enjoy Cuban cuisine, is just a 15-minute taxi ride away. To see and be seen, check out the restaurants along Miami Beach's Collin Drive (12 minutes from the port). Or, if you're doing a pre- or post-cruise stay in the Brickell neighborhood, there are many excellent dining options along the waterfront on Brickell Bay Drive and Brickell Key Drive.

Things to do near Miami cruise port

Miami is one of Florida's most popular vacation destinations and the embarkation point for major cruise lines. You could spend weeks here and still not see everything. If you want to tack on some time before or after your cruise, here are some things to do in Miami.

Hit the beach

There are 35 miles of beautiful beaches fronting Miami, from Sunny Isles Beach in the north to South Beach at the southern end. Throw in Key Biscayne and a few other islands and you have a plethora of choices.

How far is the cruise port from the beach? PortMiami is on Dodge Island, so the closest stretch of sand — and a very trendy one — is South Beach. It's about 10 minutes by taxi.

If you're more interested in bird-watching than people-watching, head south to Key Biscayne Beach or Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park (1200 Brandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne). At the tip of Key Biscayne, it has 400 acres of nature hemmed in by a 1-mile beach.

You can rent bikes to ride the trails or enjoy the day at the beach. Note that the 1820s lighthouse and fishing piers are temporarily closed. The drive to Key Biscayne from the port will take 25 to 40 minutes via taxi, depending on traffic.

Tour sassy South Beach

Even if you don't want to go to the beach, you still need to pay South Beach a visit to get a sense of what makes Miami tick. Stroll along Ocean Drive and get lost in the Art Deco Historic District, or enjoy some shopping, dining and gallery-hopping at the famous pedestrian Lincoln Road Mall.

To get that perfect selfie with Miami as the backdrop, head to South Pointe Park and Pier, where you can get a view of not only South Beach but also Fisher Island, PortMiami and Downtown Miami. If your visit includes an overnight stay, this is also the place to experience Miami's nightlife at its best.

Take the kids to the science museum

Families will want to make the 10-minute drive from the port to visit the Frost Museum of Science (1101 Biscayne Boulevard). Here, your family can marvel at the 500,000-gallon aquarium, kid-friendly touch tanks and the 250-seat 3D planetarium. There are also exhibits on the solar system, physics of flight, biology, light and lasers and more.

Visit the Wynwood Arts District

If you're into contemporary art, explore NW Second Avenue and its side streets. This is basically an outdoor museum with a variety of colorful wall murals. As you walk and discover the neighborhood's art, you can stop at craft breweries, art galleries and trendy restaurants and cafes. Several companies offer informative walking tours.

Shopping near Miami cruise port

If you need to stock up on some last-minute cruise supplies, PortMiami is near two major shopping centers: Bayside Marketplace and Brickell City Centre.

Bayside Marketplace (401 Biscayne Blvd) is an open-air shopping and entertainment complex on the waterfront. If you're looking to pick up sunscreen and shampoo for your cruise, there are a few drugstores here, including CVS (200 Biscayne Blvd).

You can walk to Bayside Marketplace from PortMiami, but it's easier to take a taxi (about 15 minutes) or get on the free Coral Way Trolley and disembark at the Biscayne Boulevard stop.

If you have high-end shopping on your mind, head on over to Brickell City Centre (701 S. Miami Ave), where four floors and more than 120 stores are dedicated to designer labels and luxury. The Saks Fifth Avenue here is 107,000 square feet.

There's also a dine-in movie theater, CMX. For restaurants, there are many to choose from. We like Luke's Lobster, Pubbelly Sushi and Quito la Huella (Latin American farm-to-table organic fare).

To get to Brickell City Centre, take the free Metromovers Brickell Loop and exit at the Brickell City Centre station. Or, board a free Miami Trolley: the Brickell Trolley if you're coming from the south or the Biscayne Trolley if you're coming from the north.

If you're staying in Brickell before your cruise, there are plenty of drugstores near the neighborhood's many hotels.

Transportation MIA Airport to Port Miami

You focus on vacation, we’ll keep our eyes on the road. Take advantage of our transportation from Miami International Airport to Port of Miami on the day of embarkation. Guests may purchase transfers up to two days prior to their sail date. Flight and Transfer Times: To purchase Carnival's transportation service, your flight must arrive at Miami International Airport no later than 12:00 PM on the day of your cruise. Transfer service will run hourly and will be provided from Miami International Airport between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM. Transportation Instructions: After collecting their luggage, guests should proceed to one of the meeting points listed below. Once there, a representative will escort guests to the pier transportation. Arriving into Miami International Airport (MIA):

• Terminal D: Near baggage claim #22
• Terminal J: Near baggage claim #1

Guests who arrive prior to their sail date must return to the airport to one of the following meeting locations no later 11:00 AM:

Transfer service will be provided by Americas Transportation. Should guests have questions regarding the transfer service, the transfer provider can be reached at the following contact number on the day of the sailing only: 305-859-9000.

Guests who purchase their own airfare tickets are required to provide flight information via Online Check-In when purchasing transfers. Changes to flight details are the responsibility of the guest and must be entered into Online Check-In no later than two days prior to their cruise. Carnival is not responsible for providing transfers to guests who schedule flights outside of the service times or provide incorrect flight information. Conditions and Restrictions: The vehicle operator is an independent contractor. Carnival assumes no liability for losses, damages or injuries in connection with the use of the operator. • Public transport: It is the cheapest option, but also the slowest and most complicated. It involves taking a bus or train from the airport to downtown Miami and then another bus to the port. The approximate price is 5 to 10 dollars per person and way. The estimated time is one hour or more.

Which terminal corresponds to me according to my cruise?

The Cruise Port of Miami has 10 different terminals, numbered A through J. Each terminal is assigned to one or more cruise companies and their respective ships. It is important to know which terminal corresponds to you according to your cruise to get to the right place and avoid delays or confusion.

Here is a list of terminals and the companies that use them:

Terminal A: Royal Caribbean

What documents do I need to board my cruise?

The documents you need to board your cruise depend on your nationality and the itinerary of your trip. In general, the following is required:

• Passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.
• Visa or electronic permit (if required) for the countries you visit during the cruise.
• Printed or electronic boarding pass sent to you by your cruise company.
• Completed health form requested by your cruise company.

It is important that you review the specific requirements for your case in advance and that you bring all the original and proper documents. Otherwise, you may have trouble boarding or entering any country.

What services are there in the port terminals?

The terminals of the Cruise Port of Miami are equipped with various services to facilitate and enhance the passenger experience. Some of the most common services are:

• Waiting area with seating
• Information screens
• Check-in and baggage drop-off counters
• Security control and customs
• Access walkways to the ship
• Shuttle service between terminals and car parks
• ATMs and currency exchange

However, some companies may assign you a specific time or time slot to show up at the port. This is done to avoid crowding and improve passenger flow. In that case, you must respect the indicated time and not arrive too early or too late.

What can I do if I have free time before or after the cruise?

If you have free time before or after the cruise, you can take the opportunity to get to know Miami and its surroundings. Miami is a vibrant and multicultural city that offers many options for all tastes and interests. Some of the things you can do are:

• Visit the historic and cultural center of Miami, where you will find museums, theaters, galleries and emblematic buildings such as the Freedom Tower or the Gesu Church.
• Enjoy the sun and the beach in Miami Beach, a tourist area famous for its festive atmosphere, art deco hotels and nightlife. You can also stroll along Ocean Drive or Lincoln Road Mall, two of the most popular and lively streets in the area.
• Explore the Little Havana neighborhood, the heart of the Cuban community in Miami. Here you can taste the typical gastronomy and music of Cuba, visit the Cuban Museum or the Cuban Memorial, or play dominoes in the Máximo Gómez Park.
• Get to know the neighborhood of Wynwood, the center of urban and alternative art in Miami. Here you can admire the murals and graffiti that decorate the walls of the Wynwood Walls or the Wynwood Art District, as well as visit the galleries and workshops of local artists.

Yes. The Cruise Port of Miami has several guarded and covered car parks for passengers who want to leave their car during their cruise. The price is $22 per day and is paid when you leave the parking lot. It is advisable to reserve your place in advance on the port’s website.

What sanitary measures are in place at the port due to the COVID-19 pandemic?

The Cruise Port of Miami follows the recommendations and protocols established by health authorities and cruise companies to ensure the safety and health of passengers and staff. Some of the measures are:

• Mandatory use of a mask in the port facilities
• Temperature control and rapid antigen test at port entrance
• Social distancing and capacity limitation in common areas

• Carnival Luminosa ship from San Francisco

In 2026, Carnival Luminosa will homeport in San Francisco for the first time. The ship’s arrival follows a 22-day transpacific journey from Brisbane, Australia , set for April 2026. This Carnival Journeys cruise will include stops in Fiji, Tahiti, Moorea , and Honolulu . From San Francisco, Carnival Luminosa will offer a series of 10-day cruises to Alaska between April 27th and September 10th, 2026. Get ready to set sail, because PortMiami has announced a new lineup of ships that will be departing just in time for the 2023-24 cruise season.

After being knocked out almost entirely in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and beginning their recovery in 2021, cruise lines regained much of their footing last year.

According to a U.S. Cruise Market Report , in 2022, cruise gross bookings skyrocketed more than 500% year over year, albeit from a much-diminished base.

And this year, the cruise market is projected to reach $12.5 billion in revenue.

But the exciting news came when PortMiami announced eight new cruise ships would be departing from Miami starting this month.

Here are the ships you can embark on as early as this month:

Oceania Cruises' Vista

Built just this year, the Oceania Vista is set to set sail this month out of PortMiami.

Carnival is calling this type of cruising "Fun Italian Style."

Sailing out this month, passengers will be able to get a little taste of Italy right from Miami.

Scenic Eclipse II

The Scenic Eclipse II is "where ultra-luxury meets discovery" and also sailing out in October.

Sailing its inaugural season in North America and the Caribbean, the 228-guest vessel arrived at the South Florida port on Oct. 21.

Built in Croatia, the Scenic Eclipse II entered service in April and was designed to offer upscale cruising in remote and polar regions.

Crystal Cruises' Crystal Serenity

Beginning in November, you can jump onboard Crystal Cruises' Serenity and enjoy a trip to the Caribbean islands or any number of destinations from Miami.

Renovated just this year, and with the capacity of 740 guests, you can enjoy amenities ranging from a spa and salon to the Wimbledon Court to play some pickleball.

MSC Cruises' Explora 1

At 813 feet long, the Explora I was designed with the guest and relaxed, home-like comfort in mind.

Sailing out of PortMiami in November, you can enjoy a trip to the Caribbean as well as luxurious dining and entertainment.

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian VIVA

Built this year, with a guest capacity of 3,099, the Norweigian VIVA also sails out of Port Miami in November.

Seeking a thrill in the high seas? This ship features some of the fastest slides on the open ocean and a three-level race track at sea.

Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur

In December 2023, Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur will begin sailing from PortMiami.

With this brand new ship, Regent encourages to enjoy "the most all-inclusive luxury experience on the Seven Seas" that "elevates the pinnacle of ocean cruising to new heights."

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas

Kickstart the new year with a trip aboard the Icon of the Seas.

Deemed the largest cruise in the world, this ship features the largest waterpark at sea with six record-breaking slides including the Frightening Bolt, the tallest waterslide to sail and the Pressure Drop, the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise.

As it returns to regular cruise schedules and operations, this year PortMiami already celebrated two of its busiest cruise passenger days in history, officials said in a news release.

On Sunday, April 9, the Port welcomed 67,594 guests, which surpassed the 58,984 guests on Sunday, Feb. 12, by 12.7%.

“We are grateful for the longstanding partnerships with all of our cruise partners and their commitment to providing a world-class experience to our passengers,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava in a statement. “These new ships, and their improved amenities and customer experience, are helping to keep Miami-Dade and PortMiami on the cutting edge of the cruise industry.”

How to Take Public Transport Between Miami Airport & Cruise Port (Just $2.25!)

Taking the public transport between the Port of Miami and the Miami airport isn’t just convenient, it’s also cheap!

While an Uber/Lyft between the cruise port and the airport will run you about $15-20 each way, and a taxi will cost you $27, you can take the train and trolley between the airport and cruise port for just $2.25 per person, each way.

Best of all, the actual time it will take you to get back and forth is roughly the same. And if there is a lot of traffic between the airport and cruise port? Public transportation might even get you there faster.

The only issue is that riding public transportation in an unfamiliar place can be intimidating. From figuring out where to go, which route to catch, and even how to pay your fare, there’s a lot to know if you’ve never ridden before.

That’s why we recently rode the Coral Way Trolley and the Orange Line Metrorail to get a first-hand look at how to get from the cruise port to the airport. (You can click the links above for more details on each service.)

Riding From the Miami Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

Flying in for your cruise? If you want to head directly to the port, the Metrorail and free trolley can get you there easily in about 30 minutes.

As an overview of the route, you’ll take the Orange Line Metrorail from Miami International Airport to the Government Center stop. There, you’ll exit the train and walk to the Coral Way Trolley, which takes you to the port. Details are below. 

Note: The trolley stops toward the west end of cruise port. If sailing Royal Caribbean (Terminal A) or Norwegian Cruise Line (Terminal B), then expect a decent walk with luggage to the cruise ship. 

As you arrive at the Miami airport, follow the signs to baggage claim and ground transportation. There, you’ll see signs pointing to the “MIA Mover.” This is a short airport tram that runs between the terminals and the rental car center/Metrorail station.

After riding and exiting the tram, follow the signs for the Metrorail. As you approach, you’ll see ticket machines and a Transit Information Center should you need any help navigating your way. 

Ticket fare is $2.25 per person for a Metrorail ride. After purchasing your ticket from one of the machines, head to the train station. Since the airport the last stop on the line, you don’t have to worry about the train’s direction. Simply catch the next Orange Line train. Trains run approximately every 15 minutes.

Weekend Note: If traveling on a weekend, the Orange Line goes only from the airport to Earlington Heights. There, you will transfer to the Green Line to continue south. Trains also run less frequently on weekends.

You’ll ride the Orange Line to the Government Center station, which is seven stops from the airport. In general, the ride takes about 15 minutes. Once at Government Center, you’ll exit the train and make your way out of the building.

The next step is to catch the free Coral Way Trolley. The trolley has a stop right in front of Government Center, but that stop heads in the opposite direction of the cruise port . Instead, you’ll want to walk approximately three blocks to the stop headed toward the Port of Miami.

You can choose stop #34 (Miami-Dade Cultural Center) or #35 (County Court House). Both are located on SW 1st Street. Look for the orange and green “Coral Way Trolley” sign. Trolleys run approximately 20-30 minutes, seven days a week, and are free to everyone.

You can track the trolley on the city of Miami’s website . This helps you get a real-time idea of when the next ride should arrive.

Brickell Station Alternate: If you prefer, you can ride the Metrorail one more stop to Brickell Station and then get off. There is a Coral Way Trolley stop right at the station on street level (saving you a walk if stopping at Government Center). However, it’s a faster trip to transfer at Government Center.

Once on the trolley, you’ll simply ride it over the causeway to Dodge Island where the cruise ships are located. The ride should only take about 10 minutes. While the route map shows several stops around the ports, in our experience the only stop we’ve seen is on North America Way, near the park on the island. From there you’ll need to walk over to your cruise ship.

Summing Up How to Take Public Transport to the Cruise Port

To make things simple, here’s the path that you’ll take to get from the Miami airport to the cruise port:

• Once arriving, follow signs for ground transportation. Take the MIA Mover to the airport’s Metrorail station. (FREE)
• Ride the Orange Line Metrorail from the airport to Government Center. ($2.25)
• Get off the train at Government Center and then walk to SW 1st Street to catch the Coral Way Trolley to the cruise port. (FREE)
• Walk to your cruise terminal.

Riding From the Cruise Port to Miami International Airport

Headed back to the airport after a cruise? Use the directions below to get back to your flight.

Just as with getting to the cruise port, to get to the Miami airport, you will take two different modes of transportation — the Coral Way Trolley and the Orange Line Metrorail — with a transfer between the two at Government Center in downtown Miami.

Step 1 First, you’ll want to find the stop for the Coral Way Trolley at the Port of Miami. The stop is near Seafarers Park, across from Terminal F. Below is a picture, and we have a map above of its location. 

You’ll look for the blue-topped cover, and the sign for the Coral Way Trolley. Note that you can ask any number of port staff for the location of the stop if you can’t find it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the stop is some distance if you are arriving at the Royal Caribbean or Norwegian terminals. Expect to walk about 15 minutes to get there. Other terminals are much closer and take only a few minutes walk to get there.

The trolley runs Monday-Saturday from 6:30 a.m. – 11 p.m. On Sunday, it runs from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. The service is completely free and a bus should arrive every 15-30 minutes. You simply hop on and take a seat. (Note: We’ve ridden on a Sunday and the first trolley didn’t arrive until roughly 8:45 a.m.)

Note: You can track the trolley on the city of Miami’s website where you can see exactly where the trolley is at any time. This helps you know how long until the next trolley and where your ride is in relative to your stop.

Step 2 Once on the trolley, let the driver know that you will want to exit at Government Center. The ride over takes about 10 minutes.

Once at Government Center, you’ll look for the signage for the “Metrorail/Metromover” and the escalators that go up to the station.

Ride the escalators up and then look for the ticket vending machines to purchase your ticket for the Orange Line. You can use the automated machine to purchase your fare or there is also a booth where you can buy the card from a staff member.

The ticket costs only $2.25 per person.

Ticket in hand, you’ll scan your ticket at the gate and then head up the escalators to the train platform. You can watch the boards to see when the next train will arrive. To go to the airport, you’ll board the Orange Line-Northbound.

Weekend Note: If traveling on a weekend, the Orange Line goes only from the airport to Earlington Heights. So you’ll want to instead board the Green Line and then transfer to the Orange Line at Earlington Heights to continue to the airport. Trains also run less frequently on weekends, so allow plenty of time.

Step 3 Once on the train, you’ll ride it north until you reach the Miami airport. The airport is the last station on the line, so there is no danger of missing your stop. (See weekend note above if traveling on Saturday or Sunday. In that case, you’ll transfer from the Green Line at Earlington Heights to the Orange Line to go to the airport).

As you exit the train, look for the escalators heading up to the airport. Ride the escalator and then continue following the signs for the airport and the MIA Mover. This automated tram runs the short distance from the Metrorail station to the airport terminals.

As you exit the MIA Mover, you’ll continue down the walkway until you arrive at a split in the path. From here, you simply look for your airline on the board and then follow the arrow to get to your correct terminal.

Summing Up How to Take Public Transport to the Airport

To make things simple, here’s the path that you’ll take to get from the cruise port to the airport:

• Catch the Coral Way Trolley the Port of Miami. (FREE)
• Transfer to the Orange Line at Government Center. ($2.25)
• At the airport station, ride the MIA Mover to the terminals. (FREE)
• Walk to your terminal to check-in/board your flight.

In total, the ride took us about 30 minutes and was extremely convenient. We also loved saving a ton of money on getting to the airport.

We just did this trip. The trek to the trolley can be a little rough. It’s not a nice area of town and we ran into a lot of questionable characters to say the least (look out for the poop on the side walks). Also, the trolley does not take folks to Port Terminal A (Royal Caribbean), and the walk is quite far from where they drop you at the Carnival Cruise line port.

We loved the idea, and gave it our best shot but needed a cab from the Carnival Port to Royal Caribbean. Next time we’ll Uber it from the airport to the cruise line port. 😉

Hi. Can you give detailed instructions & possibly pics from port of miami to FLL airport. I used your directions last year getting to the Miami airport from the port & it was super easy. However, this time we fly out of FLL. I’m assuming I still take the coral way trolley to government station to catch the metrorail to FLL. Is that correct?

Hey Tanner, I am going to Miami soon and I’m not gonna lie I’m a little lost on directions from the coral way trolley to get to the airport. I’m returning home on a Sunday and I am still not completely understanding the whole instructions on how to get from the cruise terminal to the airport especially since the routes are different on the day I leave.

Thanks for writing in. I’ll be honest, unless you have a lot of time, I’d suggest getting an Uber/Lyft to the airport on Sunday morning. The trolley and metrorail run with less frequency, and it could easily be 10 a.m. before you’re able to get to the airport. If you do want to still ride, here’s the process:

1. Catch Coral Way Trolley at the port (Schedule says it starts at 8 a.m. I’ve done it personally and it showed up around 8:30-8:45. Check the trolley tracker to see where it is in real time) 2. Take the Coral Way Trolley to Government Center 3. Take the Green Line north from Government Center to Earlington Heights (Since it’s Sunday, the Orange Line only runs between Earlington and the airport) 4. Transfer at Earlington Heights to the Orange Line that heads to the airport

Where is the trolley located at the Miami cruise port…. Near which terminal? And does it go to Bayside?

It’s right across from Terminal F. There is a stop at Bayside, but it’s one of the last stops before crossing over to the port. If you are departing the cruise terminal and wanting to go to Bayside, you’ll want the first stop and then walk over to Bayside. Otherwise, you have to ride the whole route before reaching it again.

Is there a side-walk between North America Way (port of Miami – after riding on the Trolley) to the Cruise Terminal AA/AA which is around 30-40 minutes walk? Is it safe to walk?

There is sidewalk much of the way. You will have to cross a number of small roadways. It’s safe, but definitely keep an eye out as pedestrians aren’t that common outside of the terminals and there are a number of blind corners for drivers.

Just curious how available are taxis or Ubers from the port to get to the airport. Is it something you should plan a care service in advance or are they readily accessible? I have two small children that I don’t think I would be able to truck around public transportation as much as I would like to. I am nervous not having a ride set up in advance to get back to the airport. Any information would be great. Thanks, Chris

Taxis are abundant. Uber/Lyft you’ll need to call and it might take a few minutes.

Honestly, I’ve found it easier to walk about a half-mile over the causeway into downtown and then calling a ride. However, that doesn’t sound like an option for you.

Thank you for the understandable instructions with pictures. Traveling in a new city is confusing. We have almost a full day after our cruise and was wondering if you may have suggestions on how to get to Miami Beach from Port Miami. Time isn’t a big deal but I am getting a headache trying to figure out transitioning the trolley lines, then I can figure out the luggage issue:)

To my knowledge, there’s no easy to way to get to Miami Beach via public transportation. You’ll want to get an Uber/Lyft.

Is there a shuttle at the port of Miami that circulates between the different cruise terminals and the parking lots? So strange the trolly doesn’t stop anywhere near RCL terminal.

No, there is not. And you’re right — it’s a bit of a walk from the shuttle to the RCL terminal.

Done it personally. Not as convenient as just catching an Uber/Lyft but not bad at all and dirt cheap if you have some extra time!

You need to reverse this. Nobody begins at the cruise terminal. Everybody begins at the airport.

How hard is it to travel on the trolley with luggage ?

Not hard at all. When I rode there was plenty of space. I simply rolled my bag into the seating area right by my legs.

Carnival Shares Preview of Celebration Key During Event in Chicago

Carnival Cruise Line concluded its “Your Peek at Paradise” roadshow this weekend with a final event in Chicago.

The event provided a preview of the line’s new private destination in Grand Bahama, Celebration Key.

Aimed at travel advisors, the Chicago event was the last in a series that ran throughout the summer, which also included presentations in Miami, Baltimore and Atlanta.

According to Adolfo M. Perez, senior vice president of global sales and trade marketing, in addition to hundreds of travel advisors attending in person, the event in Chicago saw over 8,000 people registering for online attendance.

“We are making sure that you have as much information about Celebration Key because it’s going to be a game changer for us,” Perez told the travel agents.

“We spent a lot of time putting this program together, kicking it off in Miami then going to Baltimore, Atlanta, and Chicago,” he added.

Carnival also held a giveaway for four early-access trips to Celebration Key, scheduled to take place before the destination opens to the public.

Perez highlighted the company’s $600-million investment in the development of the new port of call, which will be located near Freeport.

“We are investing a little bit more than half a billion dollars because we have so much confidence in this destination, and we think it’s going to be a great experience for our guests.”

Carnival’s chief marketing officer Amy Martin Ziegenfuss said that Celebration Key answers a demand from passengers, who want beach travel and experiences around the water.

“They also want to know that it’s going to be an amazing experience, and they really trust Carnival to bring these experiences like we do on the ships,” she continued.

“This is a way to extend that Carnival experience and vibe to an island destination, creating that beach moment that people are looking forward to.”

Set to open in July 2025, Celebration Key is set to be visited by 18 ships sailing from ten different homeports.

With over 500 calls planned, the destination will welcome more than two million guests during its first year of operations.
