The 14 Most Magical Places to Visit in Switzerland This Winter

Traditional houses after snowfall during a winter sunset Ardez canton of Graubunden Engadine Switzerland winter

With an enticing combination of cities, charming villages, and stunning natural landscapes (hello, Alps), Switzerland is easily one of the most beautiful countries in the world. But come wintertime, those aforementioned sights become downright magical: Think city squares dusted with snow, and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet.

Whether you want to cozy up in a luxurious hotel or spend your entire trip in the great outdoors, there are plenty of travel-worthy reasons to plan a Switzerland winter vacation. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the best seasonal activities across the country, all guaranteed to make any traveler suddenly embrace the coldest season.

This article has been updated since its original publish date.

Basel

Most European countries are known for their  Christmas markets , and Switzerland is no exception. You can find seasonal cheer in nearly every city and town, though Basel earns a few extra points for having  two markets: one in Barfüsserplatz, and one in Münsterplatz. Here you can find hundreds of vendors selling handmade goods and treats from their stands, as well as plenty of twinkling lights and decorations to really get you in the proper spirit.

The Glacier Express

The Glacier Express

If you really want to maximize the magic of your wintry vacation, consider booking a train ride to get from town to town. There are several cross-country options available, but we’re big fans of the  Glacier Express this time of year. Not only does the train connect two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts (Zermatt and St. Moritz), but it traverses some of the most beautiful sites in the central Swiss Alps and offers onboard perks like panoramic viewing windows and three-course meals.

Lucerne Switzerland winter

Visiting  Switzerland during ski season is hardly a question, but most snow bunnies won’t venture outside their respective resort towns. This year, make your Swiss vacation more interesting and book a trip to  Lucerne . The gorgeous city features activities you won’t find on the slopes—like museum tours and ferry rides on Lake Lucerne—while still offering easy access (via train and bus) to dozens of  winter sport resorts .

Zermatt

Of course, if you  do want a purely on-piste Switzerland winter vacation, the village of Zermatt will mark all the boxes. Fresh powder? Check. Heli-skiing? Check. Great après-ski venues? Double check. It even boasts a few added bonuses, like a city-wide ban on cars (i.e. the freshest air imaginable) and views of the Matterhorn.

Interlaken

Interlaken is the unofficial adventure capital of Switzerland, and its  winter activities are much more varied and unique than in other major cities. Sure, you can go skiing and snowshoeing here. But you can also go paragliding (or skydiving) down snowy mountains, book an hour at a curling rink, or take a winter kayaking tour on Lake Brienz.

Jura Vaudois Nature Park

Jura Vaudois Nature Park

Just a few miles north of Lake Geneva’s coastline, Jura Vaudois Nature Park occupies roughly 131,213 acres of prime Swiss real estate. Here you can find dense spruce forests and native wildlife, as well as a few hotels, restaurants, and cheesemongers set up in traditional mountain huts. The park becomes even more peaceful during the winter months, though you can still enjoy some cross-country skiing and snowshoeing if you simply must stay busy.

Badrutts Palace Hotel

St. Moritz is typically associated with glitz and glam, and for good reason. The sky-high resort features some of the best slopes and accommodations in the country—just check out  Badrutt’s Palace , a Readers’ Choice Award winner for six years running. With luxurious guestrooms and Michelin-starred dining venues (not to mention the most glorious indoor pool imaginable), the resort encompasses the extravagance that makes St. Moritz pop off the map.

Glacier 3000

Glacier 3000

Glacier 3000 is a sports complex located high in the Swiss Alps, easy to reach via bus or cable car from Gstaad. The resort offers every winter sport imaginable, including skiing, dog sledding, mountain climbing, and glacier hikes. Brave travelers are also welcome to walk across the Peak Walk by Tissot, a gravity-defying suspension bridge that connects two mountain peaks.

Festival International de Ballons

Château-d’Oex

It’s a scientific fact that places get infinitely more magical when viewed from a hot air balloon. So you can imagine the proverbial sparks that fly during the  Festival International de Ballons , an annual event held in the tiny town of Château-d’Oex. During the nine-day festival (the next one takes place from January 19-29), visitors can watch the horizon fill up with some 60 colorful balloons, take rides in the balloons, enjoy live music and airplane shows, and participate in plenty of other kid-friendly activities.

Gstaad Palace

Though there are plenty of reasons to visit the upscale resort town of Gstaad during the winter, we’re here for one primary reason:  Gstaad Palace . This award-winning hotel looks like a fairytale castle in the mountains (complete with towers and turrets), and it encourages guests to cozy up with spa treatments, truffle fondue, and pasta cooking classes. If you do decide to venture out, ski slopes and toboggan runs are just outside the door.

Lake Oeschinen

Lake Oeschinen

Lake Oeschinen (or Oeschinensee) is a dazzling body of water tucked away in the Bernese Alps. The lake is a popular winter destination thanks to a wealth of outdoor activities like ice fishing, tobogganing, skiing, and snowboarding—all enjoyed while surrounded by snow-capped mountains and evergreen trees. There are even some cafes scattered around the area so you can enjoy a nice mug of hot chocolate between excursions.

Tschuggen Grand Hotel

For an action-packed winter vacation without the blinding glamour of the major ski resorts, consider a trip to Arosa. The picturesque mountain village offers access to some 140 miles of slopes, as well as the well-respected Arosa Ski School. It’s also home to the Tschuggen Grand Hotel , a five-star property famous for its sprawling spa with metal-and-glass skylights jutting out of the mountainside.

The Stoosbahn

In late 2017, Switzerland made headlines for opening the  world’s steepest funicular in the alpine resort of Stoos. The so-called Stoosbahn, or Schwyz-Stoos funicular, remains impressive to this day, for both its superlative maximum gradient (110 percent, no big deal) and abundance of fun winter activities. Once you get to the top of Stoos, you can enjoy an abundance of pristine ski slopes, toboggan runs, cross-country trails, and more.

Looking to go off-grid? You can’t do much better than the highest official town in Europe, sitting at an altitude of more than 5,000 feet. Davos is a relatively popular ski destination but has far fewer crowds than other towns, so you can take advantage of those slopes without bumping into the “see and be seen” crowd along the way.

Best Time To Visit Switzerland: A Month-by-Month Guide by Aplins in the Alps

Wondering when is the best time to visit Switzerland? If you’re already planning your visit to the Swiss Alps, then you know that choosing the best time of year isn’t as obvious as you might think.

You wanna maximize your experiences, enjoy perfect weather with minimal crowds, and to top it off, you’d love to do it on a budget . But does this idyllic time of year even exist?

>>Just here for the free download? Here it is !

Prefer to WATCH instead of READ? Here ya go!

Hey, we’re Jana and Brett , and this beautiful slice of Switzerland has become our adopted home for the past 2 summers (since 2021). But we don’t just spend time here for our enjoyment — we’re on a mission to help you maximize your trip to Switzerland while minimizing your budget and planning time .

So today we’re gonna help you decide when is the best time to visit Switzerland, based on questions you often ask us about in the comments of our YouTube videos:

  • What’s the weather like?
  • Which months are cheaper or more expensive?
  • What’s open and which trains/mountain lifts are running?

We’ll answer these questions month-by-month using real data. But you know we’re gonna give you more than just the facts, right? So after working our way through the calendar, we’re gonna get down to the nitty gritty—sharing when we would choose to visit based on sightseeing priorities and travel preferences that are way more personal than any amount of research.

So are you ready to plan your trip to Switzerland? Let’s go.

Follow along using our free spreadsheet download of month-by-month weather data, average Airbnb costs, and train openings!

Weather in Switzerland Year Round (Month-By-Month)

As we work through the calendar, here’s what we’ll highlight for each month using data for Interlaken, Switzerland since that’s the hub of the region (and may be one of the best places to visit in Switzerland):

  • Average high temperature
  • Average # of days with sunshine
  • Average # of days with precipitation (rain or snow)
  • Average cost of an Airbnb during the month
  • Which railways and cable cars are open or closed

Keep in mind, though, that averages only tell some of the story. This region frequently has extreme weather swings, so your experience could be quite different than the averages indicate. And of course, it can change quite drastically depending on the altitude.

So use this as a guide to help make your decision, and then commit to having a great time on your trip to the region no matter what the weather throws at you!

Switzerland Weather in January

  • Temperature : 36°F
  • Sunshine : 7 days
  • Precipitation : 9 days
  • Lodging : 4th least expensive

It’s no surprise that the first month of the year is also the coldest, with an average high temperature of 36 °F, 7 days with sunshine, and 9 days with precipitation.

It’s also the 4th least expensive month based on airbnb data.

During January, you’ll find that most of the important mountain trains and cable cars are running, with the exception of ones that run only in summer such as the funicular to Harder Kulm, the cogwheel train to Schynige Platte , and the steam train to the Brienzer Rothorn.

The Berner Oberland Regional Pass (our favorite!) won’t be available for a few more months, but in the past few years a winter version of the Top of Europe pass has been available.

If you love snow or snowsports, then January is obviously a great month to visit, and there are even sledding, snowshoeing, and winter hiking tracks too.

Switzerland Weather in February

  • Temperature : 40°F
  • Sunshine : 5 days
  • Precipitation : 3 days
  • Lodging : least expensive month

February looks a lot like January in many ways. The average high temperature is slightly warmer at 40°.

You’re likely to see snow or rain just as often as in January. But it has one of the lowest amounts of total precipitation for the entire year.

But It’s typically not as sunny, with an average of just 5 days with sunshine—however, February also has fewer days, so there is that 😉

A benefit of traveling in February is that it’s the least expensive month to book a rental on Airbnb . And as for rail operation and travel passes, you’ll pretty much find the exact same availability as January.

When is the best time to ski in Switzerland? Possibly February because that’s when the locals go. Schools typically close for a week or two in February and lots of Swiss use this time to go skiing. So if you’re coming primarily for a ski trip you might want to avoid this month, or at least be aware of how school holidays might impact the crowds and prices.

Switzerland Weather in March

  • Temperature : 48°F
  • Sunshine : 10 days
  • Precipitation : 11 days
  • Lodging : 5th least expensive

March is kind of a weird month in a lot of ways. Winter is starting to say goodbye, especially at lower elevations, but it really isn’t spring yet either.

There’s an average high temp of 48° in Interlaken with 10 days with sunshine and 11 days with precipitation. But your experience could really vary depending on where you visit.

Lower elevation ski areas such as Oeschinensee and the Niederhorn wrap up their winter season and close for maintenance by the middle of the month.

And airbnb prices are beginning to pick up, but it’s still the 5th least expensive month of the year.

Switzerland Weather in April

  • Temperature : 54°F
  • Sunshine : 14 days
  • Precipitation : 12 days
  • Lodging : 7th least expensive

April really is the beginning of Spring in Switzerland, especially at lower elevations. Interlaken sees an average high temp of 54°, but you’ll probably see days in the 60s as well, especially later in the month.

There are an average of 14 days with sunshine and 12 days with precipitation, but it also ranks 7th for your budget, indicating that international tourism is beginning to come out of hibernation.

The Top of Europe summer pass is usually available around the middle of the month, but it’s a complicated time to plan your sightseeing. More cable cars and mountain trains are shut down part of the month for maintenance, with the Schilthorn included in that mix.

But the funicular to Harder Kulm opens midway through the month, and might just be the best spot for a sunset view on a clear day.

And around this time, you also see Lake Thun and Lake Brienz spring back to life, with boat cruises beginning to run regularly. It’s not a great time for hiking or skiing in the high mountains, but at lower elevations it might be one of the most beautiful times of year.

Waterfalls and rivers flow freely, wildflowers begin to bloom, and it’s all set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

Keep in mind that schools also closed for a week or two around Easter for a spring break of sorts. So you might find more Europeans traveling and perhaps some smaller shops or restaurants closed for the break.

Need a cheat sheet?

I know, this is a lot of technical information. But when you’re planning a trip to the mountains, this is the stuff you need to know!

So we created a free download with all of the weather data and Airbnb stats we’ve been referencing, plus we made a comprehensive chart of 23 trains, cable cars, and funiculars in the Jungfrau Region and which months they’re open or closed.

Sign up for the free download and it will be sent straight to your inbox!

But for now, let’s dive into the next few months which are the peak tourism season in the Swiss Alps.

Switzerland Weather in May

  • Temperature : 64°F
  • Sunshine : 11 days
  • Precipitation : 19 days
  • Lodging : 9th least expensive

May feels more like the springtime you might be used to with average high temperatures of 64° and plenty of days well into the 70s.

It also rains like the spring you might be used to—with just 11 days with sunshine and 19 days with precipitation on average, making it the rainiest month of the year. (Maybe that’s why they call it “spring?”)

But as colleges in the U.S. wrap up their spring semesters, you’ll see the return of more international tourists, as well as higher prices on airbnb.

There are still times of maintenance for some of the mountain railways and cable cars; but very few of them are shut down for the entire month.

The cable car and train from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren is closed for maintenance for a couple weeks. But thankfully the Schilthornbahn is open once again so you can reach Mürren using that cable car instead.

On top of that, the cogwheel train to Schynige Platte and the gondola to the beautiful blue lake at Oeschinensee are running by the end of the month, and you’ll finally be able to use our favorite train pass: the Berner Oberland regional pass.

Oh and we forgot to mention that our free download also shows you which train passes are available for every month of the year.

Switzerland Weather in June

  • Temperature : 70°F
  • Sunshine : 12 days
  • Precipitation : 18 days
  • Lodging : 2nd most expensive

When June comes around it’s officially summer in Switzerland—both in terms of weather and tourism.

The average high temperature is just 70°, but you’ll likely see temps reach well up into the 80s at some point.

June sees an average of 12 days with sunshine. But along with the heat, you’ll also see plenty of precipitation.

The first part of the month can still feel like Spring in Switzerland, depending on the year. But by the middle of the month we’re very much into high season, making this the 2nd most expensive month according to airbnb data.

A couple of mountain trains and funiculars, like the one to Allmendhubel , wait until the first or second weekend of the month to open for the summer season, but by the middle of the month, everywhere you’d like to visit in the mountains is open.

Schools break for the summer starting early in the month, which means you’ll definitely notice a difference in how busy this place gets as June moves along.

And that definitely won’t show any signs of slowing down as we move into July.

aplins in the alps in murren switzerland in the swiss alps

Switzerland Weather in July

  • Temperature : 75°F
  • Precipitation : 17 days
  • Lodging : Most expensive

July could probably be thought of as the high of high season, and there are plenty of good reasons for that:

  • Schools and universities are on break in Europe and North America, bringing tons of international travelers.
  • The snow has melted at most higher elevations, making world-class hiking trails available all over the region.
  • The weather is the warmest and the days are the longest.

While the average high temperature is only 75°, don’t be surprised to see that thermometer stretch up into the high 80s or even the 90s.

Your chances of sunshine tend to be higher than during the Spring, but you’re probably going to see your fair share of rain as well.

Unfortunately all that means July is also the most expensive time to book an airbnb . But along with high prices and lots of daylight, you also have every summer activity imaginable at your disposal.

All of the mountain trains and cable cars are running throughout the entire month, and this is also the perfect time for cruising on—or even swimming in—the lakes.

If you’re coming for summer sports activities and are willing to pay a premium and endure the crowds, July is a safe choice.

hiking in the swiss alps near murren and gimmelwald switzerland in summer

Switzerland Weather in August

  • Sunshine : 16 days
  • Precipitation : 15 days
  • Lodging : 3rd most expensive

Moving on to August, it would be a mistake not to mention that the 1st of the month is the Swiss National Day, kind of like Independence Day in the U.S.

There are activities and parades in nearly every village and town, and we think it’s a lot of fun to be in Switzerland during this time. But you’ll likely see a lot more of the Swiss traveling to the area and some small shops might be closed at least for the day, so keep that in mind.

August has the same average high temperature as July, and the first part of the month is almost certainly going to feel like the heat of summer. But as the month goes along, you just might find hints of Fall temperatures around the corner.

It also tends to be a little more stable than Spring and early Summer, with an average of 16 days with sun compared to 15 days with precipitation.

August is the 3rd most expensive month on airbnb. But just like July, all of the mountain trains and lifts will be running, making it another fantastic month for summer sports of all kinds.

aplins in the alps in murren switzerland near lauterbrunnen switzerland and gimmelwald

Switzerland Weather in September

  • Temperature : 68°F
  • Sunshine : 20 days
  • Precipitation : 10 days
  • Lodging : 5th most expensive

By early September, schools are back in session in Switzerland, Europe, and North America, so you’ll notice a discernible decrease in the number of tourists.

The average high temperature drops back to 68°, but there is normally still an abundance of sunshine and quite a bit less rain, and you’ll probably see plenty of days with temperatures in the 70s.

It’s the 5th most expensive month on airbnb, but all of the mountain trains and cable cars are still running, making it a solid option for those traveling on a budget who still want high mountain hiking options.

The last two years we’ve noticed pretty drastic weather changes between the first and second half of the month. And while that might not be typical every year, it’s worth mentioning that Autumn really has arrived by the end of the month.

All that to say, if you crave warm temperatures and long, sunny days, both are likely gone by the time the calendar changes to October! But to us, the blue September skies just look a little clearer and this is one of our favorite months to visit this region.

Switzerland Weather in October

  • Temperature : 57°F
  • Sunshine : 22 days
  • Precipitation : 8 days
  • Lodging : 6th least expensive

Speaking of October, this is the month when the locals enjoy spending time in their mountains.

Schools are on break for a couple weeks and most international tourists have packed up and left, so October is perhaps one of the most authentic times to enjoy the Jungfrau Region.

The weather tends to be pretty cooperative too, even though it’s quite a bit cooler, with an average high of 57° and temperatures rarely reaching beyond the 60s.

If you like sunshine and cooler temperatures, this just might be the month for you. 22 days with sunshine compared to just 8 with precipitation makes this one of the sunniest and driest months of the entire year.

Having said that, October will also bring a few more planning complications compared to the summer in Switzerland. By the end of the month, lots of mountain trains and lifts start closing for maintenance, with Grindelwald First included in this group.

But all in all, October (which is the 6th least expensive month) might just be an all-around bargain. With Fall colors on full display, and fresh mushrooms and local game on offer at restaurants, there’s a lot to love about this time of year.

Switzerland Weather in November

  • Temperature : 45°F
  • Sunshine : 15 days
  • Lodging : 3rd least expensive

What can we say about November? For starters, it seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. It’ll make you think it’s Autumn in Switzerland and it’ll also tell you it’s Winter—and sometimes both at the same time!

The average high temperature is 45°, but you might see days with highs in the low 30s and other days in the low 60s.

The amount of sunshine also drops quite a bit, though you likely won’t see huge amounts of precipitation either. Gray, misty fog just might be the best picture of an average day in November.

But November is also the 3rd cheapest month according to airbnb.

Most of the summer trains and cable cars have shut down by this point, and even the Schilthorn goes into maintenance mode partway through the month.

Jungfraujoch is open 365 days a year, but even a visit there could be more complicated. Both the Eiger Express from Grindelwald and the train from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg are closed for maintenance for part of the month, meaning it could take up to an hour longer than normal to reach Jungfraujoch depending on where you’re staying.

Answers to your travel questions

Travelers just like you have asked us a ton of questions about when to visit, what’s the weather like, and what to do if the lifts are closed—and this post and our free download are made to give you a realistic picture of what it’s like to visit Interlaken during each month of the year.

Just want to remind you to snatch up the free-and-helpful goodness using the form below!

And now, let’s wrap up with the final month of the year.

Switzerland Weather in December

  • Temperature : 38°F
  • Lodging : 2nd least expensive

If Christmas markets, mulled wine, puffy coats, and snow sound charming to you, then you’re probably going to love December.

I’m sure we don’t need to tell you it’ll be cold, with average high temperatures in the upper 30s. But that’s what gets you in the holiday spirit, right?

Unsurprisingly, the amount of sunshine drops along with the temperatures, but average precipitation for the month remains pretty low.

If you avoid the days surrounding Christmas and New Years, December is pretty budget friendly, with airbnb ranking it the 2nd cheapest month of the year.

Though the first half of the month still has quite a few closures, all the important ski areas and sightseeing spots—including Grindelwald First and the Schilthorn —will be open and waiting for your visit.

So if you like the holiday season and know how to pack your layers, December in the Jungfrau Region could be an experience unlike anything you’ve enjoyed before!

That was helpful but…now what?

We’re all about helping you maximize your trip while minimizing your budget and planning time, so here are some bonus tips that will help you decide when to visit based on specific priorities and activities.

where to visit switzerland in november

We get lots of questions like, “When is the most beautiful time to visit the Swiss Alps?”

While that’s an impossible question and every time of year is beautiful here, we know this usually means a few things: wildflowers in bloom, green alpine meadows, and waterfalls filled to the brim with snow melt.

To enjoy scenes like these that inspired even great writers like Tolkien, there’s nothing like Springtime in the Jungfrau Region. Particularly, aim for mid-April to mid-June .

Giessbach Falls will be raging, the Sprutz and Staubach falls will be plunging mightily, and the entire Lauterbrunnen Valley will look like a fantasy.

If you’re looking for the best combination of springtime beauty and hiking availability, look to June. You might not be able to access the highest of alpine hikes, particularly early in the month, but you’ll find plenty to keep all of your senses busy!

aplins in the alps hiking in the Swiss Alps to bachalpsee near grindelwald first in grindelwald switzerland

If you’re like us and you love hiking in the Swiss Alps , then plan your visit sometime from June to September . A word of caution though about June: snow sometimes covers trails above 2000m well into the month. So if it’s really important to you to have the best trails available with good conditions, you might wanna wait until at least the second half of June .

And if you’re looking for fewer tourists and perhaps a lower budget, the first half of September has proved to be a great time to visit. You’re less likely to experience extreme heat, the weather is a little more stable, and the snow usually hasn’t yet returned even at higher elevations.

Now if the hiking you’re more interested in isn’t so high in the mountains, mid-May to mid-June and mid-September to mid-October could be a great choice as well. But don’t count on being able to hike mountain trails above 1700 or 1800, even though it might be possible depending on the year.

aplins in the alps at lungernsee lake lungern near brienz switzerland

It goes without saying that if you like to swim in the lakes and you’re not cold-blooded, July and August will be the best times to visit.

But enjoying a nice boat ride on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz can happen anytime from mid-April until the last week or so of October . This entire time is also great for lakeside strolls .

Winter in Switzerland

If you love winter wonderlands yet winter sports aren’t your reason for traveling, it’s hard to imagine a better time to visit than December , when the Christmas markets and decorations are in full swing, and the charm level is dialed up to a 10 out of 10.

If winter sports are your jam, we’ve heard that January and February are the best time to ski in Switzerland, although February is particularly busy due to school breaks. So December and March might offer fewer crowds and better prices.

But admittedly, we aren’t skiers, and we haven’t yet been here for Winter in Switzerland. But we wanted to share our perspective with you based on our own experience as well as lots of research.

Switzerland in November: Everything You Need to Know

November might be part of the shoulder season in Switzerland but there’s shortage of great things to do on vacation this month. In addition to these, there’s plenty of other great places to go and things to add to your bucket list. Follow along with us to discover what you should do on your next Swiss trip in November!

Switzerland Weather  in November

Berner Oberland Highlands in November

November is the last month in Autumn in Switzerland and the weather takes a noticeable turn toward Winter. At the beginning of the month, you may feel the same colder temperatures you began to experience in October, but by the end of November, the weather is quite chilly. The glorious colors of Fall will still be abundant, but fading as the Winter snows set in.

Temperatures can range from mild to very cold depending on the altitude and time of day. Lower altitude regions like Ticino will have the warmest temperatures with very little snow, while high altitude mountain towns and ski resorts like Zermatt will have a lot of snow and cold weather.

You’ll want to prepare for the weather according to the canton or towns you plan to visit, as they can range pretty drastically this month. For instance, the busy city of Zurich can have daily November temperatures of 36 ° F to 47 ° F (2 ° C to 8 ° C) while Zermatt will average 27 ° F to 39 ° F (-3 ° C to 4 ° C).

Average November Temperature in Switzerland (By City)

Switzerland affordability & crowds  in november.

Interlaken in November

November is a lovely month to visit Switzerland for the incredible Autumnal coloring and light snowfall across the country. November is still considered part of the slower shoulder season for Switzerland, so traveling will be fairly easy and crowd levels will be low.

The affordability in a month like November is quite budget-friendly compared to other months of the year. However, Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries to visit, so the term “budget-friendly” can still look more expensive than the average meaning. That said, if saving money is your goal, this is a good month to go.

Switzerland Snow & Skiing  in November

As mentioned before, November will see an increase in snowfall, especially for the ski resorts and high altitude mountain towns. The alpine areas will begin to receive consistent snowfall, which is forming a good base layer for their ski runs and toboggan paths. The snow is new, however, so the pack is not yet hard and secure in the lower areas.

Skiing will be good and mostly open around the country at this point, though some resorts may have much better conditions than others. As far as lower altitude areas goes, snow has not quite made it to them. You can still enjoy some hikes through the lower regions before the snow covers the entire country.

Best Switzerland Ski Resorts in November

Most Swiss ski resorts are open by the time November rolls around, so it won’t be too difficult to have a grand time skiing this month. We’ll share the details on which resorts are best to consider depending on availability and conditions in November.

A view of the Matterhorn from Zermatt in November.

Zermatt is the best all-around ski resort in Switzerland, and while it’s open all year round, November is the month when the conditions are noticeably better.  The slopes at Zermatt are great for all level of skiers. The top of the Klein Matterhorn run, which is the primary starting point for skiing in October, has excellent views of the Matterhorn and surrounding alps, with easy sloping runs that lead back to the village.

Zermatt is a charming, car-free village nestled at the base of the Matterhorn. The town has friendly residents and is relatively quiet in October. It still offers various outdoor activities like hiking, while accommodating guests with relaxing pools and spas, shopping and delicious dining options.

Saas-Fee

Saas Fee's snow-covered peaks in November.

Saas-Fee may not have the altitude that Zermatt has, but it offers more in the way of expert and intermediate skiing. This is a perfect place for brushing up on your skills before the start of the ski season, since there are very few people on the slopes and the multiple ski parks with jumps and bowls.

The village is a great homebase for an Autumn ski trip, and will be much quieter this time of year. It will most likely be warm in comparison to the mountain temperatures. In addition to skiing, a trip to Saas-Fee could include hiking on beautiful trails, floating on the water, relaxing at the spa and or dining at one of multiple great restaurants.

Mount Titlis, Engelberg

Gondola at Mt. Titlis glacier in November.

The Titlis glacier is located atop Engelberg and is a very popular mountain for hiking during the warmer months. But by the time November rolls around, the snowy peak will be available for skiing when the conditions are better. This is a great option for visitors who are staying in or near Lucerne or in the Jungfrau region this month.

The slopes here offer a variety of levels from beginner to expert. Kids can even feel comfortable, provided they stick to the less intense paths. Engelberg town is built around a medieval monastery which serves as the town center and main structure. The town is primarily focused on snow sports, but has a few fun attractions like community spas and a cheese factory.

St. Moritz

St. Moritz streets in November.

St. Moritz is one of the most well-known Swiss ski resorts in the world, twice hosting the Winter Olympics. The Corvatsch ski area, in particular, is the best part of St. Moritz for very early season skiing. Winter sports are a popular pastime in St. Moritz and you’ll find tourists and locals participating in ice skating, sledding, Nordic skiing and even kite skiing.

St. Moritz is good for all ski levels with plenty of varied terrain to accommodate beginners to experts. Thrill-seekers will love the Corviglia Snow Park which features 30 different obstacles, among other parks and ski areas in St. Moritz.

Diavolezza

Diavolezza in November.

Diavolezza is a more advanced portion not too far from St. Moritz is not for the faint of heart. Early November is the time for expert skiers to spread their wings on adventurous off-piste runs with excellent snow quality before more people show up. Powder hounds can get their fill of uncrowded backcountry skiing relatively close to the main Diavolezza ski area.

The summit offers several delicious dining options though this is somewhat of an isolated ski destination. There is not much in the way of long-term accommodations, but it’s a great choice for adding onto your ski trip from St. Moritz. You can get to Diavolezza via train, car or bus.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald, Switzerland mountains in November.

Grindelwald is the country’s Winter playground that kicks off ski season in October. The most popular area to ski this time of year is the Bodmi Arena, which is one of Switzerland’s largest beginner ski areas. If you require a great ski lesson or want to go at your own pace, the Bodmi Arena is the perfect choice.

Other great adventures include family fun like tobogganing, cliff walking, zip lining, and hiking. The quaint village of Grindelwald is also filled to the brim with iconic Swiss architecture, Germanic design, stony storefronts and rolling hills, giving you a gorgeous homebase for your travels through the Bernese mountains. From Grindelwald, you also gain access to the Jungfrau region and Lauterbrunnen via train.

Verbier in November.

Verbier has over 410km of runs with loads of varied terrain to choose from. Not only does it feature pretty evenly marked blue, red and black pistes for all levels of skiers, it also has a pretty decent sized cross-country ski area and a great snowpark.

The downside to skiing Verbier in November is the fact that it’s not always reliable. Since the snow hasn’t packed on the mountain yet, usually the weekends are the only time you can ski in November. In order to accomplish this, you have to hike or snowshoe up the runs and ski back down since the lifts aren’t yet running. Despite this, skiing Verbier in November is still possible!

Best Things to Do in Switzerland in November

November is a gorgeous month for traveling through Switzerland and most activities are still possible between colder weather fun and warmer weather adventuring. Depending on your desired itinerary, you can accomplish the last bit of hiking and sightseeing of the year or engage in the first days of Winter wonderland bliss.

Visit Bern

Bern, Switzerland in November.

November is one of the last months that Bern remains fairly empty before the Winter season kicks in. However, at the end of the month, the Zibelemarit (Onion Market) draws thousands of visitors to the Old Town cobblestoned streets to welcome the holidays. Lots of people will enjoy touring the Old Town, where you’ll find an abundance of original architecture dating back to the Medieval time period. Bern Minster and its Minster Terrace should be on your list of things to do in this area.

The Einstein Museum is another great place to spend your time, and a tour through the Clock Tower or the “Zytglogge” is highly recommended. You can also get a comprehensive tour and learning experience with a short boat cruise along the Aare River, which flows through the city.

In addition to experience Bern to the fullest, it also makes a great homebase for visiting the neighboring countries of France and Germany in November. Train travel is highly efficient here, but the option of renting a car to travel at your own pace is also lovely this time of year.

Sip Wine at Lavaux Vineyard

Lavaux Vineyard in November

As the grape harvest comes to a close, Swiss vineyards showcase their new and fresh wines. Switzerland may not be a country well known for their wine making, but visitors will be just as impressed with the unique taste and flavor as they would be in France or Italy. There are several villages that specialize in wine production that also make great touring destinations, such as La Cote, Neuchatel and Praz.

The best place to go, however, is Lavaux Vineyards on Lake Geneva . It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for the steep gradation vineyard which must be hand harvested every year. The vineyard hires temporary harvesters for the season, so anyone planning to stay in the city for an extended time can call ahead for employment and lodging.

Explore Lucerne

Lion Monument at the Glacier Garden in Lucerne, Switzerland.

November is a beautiful month for visiting Lucerne – plus, it’s a great month for indulging in both Swiss chocolate and Swiss fondue! Now that the weather is colder, this historic town will feel even cozier and more delightful. The Old Town’s intricately painted architecture, the Medieval Chapel Bridge, and walks along the nine towers at Musegg Wall have a whole new look and feel in November.

In addition to this, you won’t want to pass on a visit to the Glacier Garden with artifacts from the Ice Age . You can also find the Lion Monument attraction near the Garden, which is impeccably beautiful with the surrounding Fall foliage. Nearby Mount Pilatus is still offering tours up the mountain this month, and while pricey, is a worthy trip for overlooking Lake Lucerne.

Hike Mount Rigi

Mt. Rigi, Switzerland in November.

Hiking Mount Rigi in most months is no small feat, but November is definitely the coldest time to go. However, visitors may want to take advantage as this is the final month before closing for Winter. You can also easily get here via boat from Lucerne or train from other cities.

The Rigi Panoramic Trail can be completed in 4 hours and offers stunning views throughout the hike. The entire trail is well-care for and easily accessible for small kids and families. It runs alongside an old railway and many of the pathways lead to mountain top restaurants for refreshments and a short break before finishing the hike.

Thun, Switzerland in November.

Thun is one of the main towns you’ll find off the banks of Lake Thun on the Aare River, which is popular for boat cruises and touring. There are several castles to see in the area, including Thun Castle along with Oberhofen Castle across Lake Thun. Thun has many scenic walks through the old town, down the historic covered bridges and over to Balliz Island where you can shop at the market and dine at several local cafes.

Thun is not only great for outdoor adventures, but also indoor tours. Museums like the Musee Armee Suisse and the Kunstmuseum Thun are nice options to add to your list after exploring the Old Town. Obere Hauptgasse is also a beautiful walking street with lots of local boutiques and cafes for resting between attractions.

Night Sledding in Interlaken

Apres ski food after night sledding in Switzerland.

Interlaken is a one-of-a-kind destination, beloved by thrill-seekers. As Autumn turns to Winter, the fun certainly doesn’t stop in this adventurous town. While hiking, one of the main attractions here, is not quite as accessible in November, other outdoor activities like skydiving are still possible through multiple guides.

One thing you won’t want to miss in Interlaken this month are the night sledding excursions. These require prior booking, but include a unique trip up the mountain from Interlaken to partake in Swiss fondue before embarking on a thrilling night time sledding trail . The pathways you’ll take have views of frozen waterfalls along the alpine hills and forests.

Tour the Jungfrau Region

Jungfrau in November.

The Jungfrau region of Switzerland makes up a portion of Bernese Oberland and is home to the likes of Jungfraujoch the “Top of Europe” . Jungfraujoch has the highest railway station in the continent and hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. November is the perfect time to witness one of the tallest peaks in the world while avoiding the large crowds.

There are other attractions in Jungfrau like Lauterbrunnen’s 72 waterfalls and hiking trails, or Schilthorn’s panoramic views of the Bernese Alps . Cities like Interlaken, Grindelwald or Wengen make great basecamps for seeing the region, while also offering beautiful accommodations and delicious dining options to their guests. It’s fairly easy to travel within the region and feel like you’ve had a complete Swiss experience with a weeklong vacation stationed in Jungfrau.

Ride Schilthorn Cable Car

Schilthorn, Switzerland

Schilthorn, as mentioned above, is part of the Jungfrau region and has some of the most stunning views of the Jungfraujoch massif. This superior cable car ride is one of the best in world , where visitors can get breathtaking views of the Swiss alps. It’s been dubbed the “James Bond Mountain” after being featured in the 1969 film, and there’s an exhibit commemorating the occasion.

The cable car trip begins in the small town of Murren and the cable car trek pulls riders across deep ravines and canyons all the way to the top of Schilthorn. Once you’ve reached the top, you can step onto the Bernese Alps viewing platform for an even more spectacular view. There’s also a revolving panoramic restaurant at the peak to complete the whole experience.

Tour Abbey of Saint Gall

Interior inside Abbey of Saint Gall in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The Abbey of Saint Gall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest, most historic sites in all of Switzerland. This Carolingian cathedral is located in the town of St. Gallen and has been impressively preserved since its construction in 719 AD. The interior of the Abbey also has some of the highest revered collections of Baroque artistry in Switzerland.

Certainly a sight to behold, most visitors take a day trip from Zurich or Appenzell just to see the Abbey. The monastery has changed hands over the centuries, but it’s maintained a pristine exterior and strong Catholic influence. Not only is the architecture impressive, but the Abbey has boasts one of the oldest and best preserved libraries in the world.

November Events in Switzerland

Zibelemarit in Switzerland in November.

All Saints Day

All Saints Day is a Catholic holiday celebrated by particular cantons within Switzerland that have the most Catholic influence. It takes place November 1 as a recognition day for all saints of the faith who do not have their own celebrated day in the year. Some Christians remember the dead on this day, as well, with some businesses closing and others remaining open.

Geneva International Film Festival

This 10 day event is an innovative experience for film directors, writers, producers and more. New technology is introduced and tested during the festival, special screenings of upcoming movies are presented and live performances take place over the course of the event.

Zibelemarit

The Onion Market is a highly anticipated event in Bern held at the end of November as an introduction to the holiday season. Stalls of local craftsmen and cooks providing onion tarts and gluhwein abound on the old city streets and people come from all over for the experience. This one day event hosts thousands of people over 12 hours as they stock up on local favorites to ring in the month of Christmas.

November presents a host of great things to do in Switzerland for vacation, from touring the most historic monastery in the country to skiing down the first runs before the official start of Winter. Whether you find yourself in the Jungfrau region or traveling through the Bern canton, we guarantee you’ll have lots of fun on a November getaway to Switzerland.

16 Best places for fall in Switzerland

Located in the middle of Europe, Switzerland has all seasons of the year, and fall is probably the prettiest. Yes, you can object, Switzerland is beautiful in every season, but Switzerland in the fall is like a fairy-tale come to life: the sun, which is still warm in the lowlands, the cool, crisp air in higher elevations, the colorful leaves…oh yeah, the leaves! From the end of September to October, taking a trip to Switzerland is like stepping into a world of mesmerizing color.

In this blog post, I wanted to break down the best places to go in Switzerland to ensure you make the most of your fall trip. My parents visit us regularly at this time of the year – just in time for the fall holidays, so we have tried all the tips below in the fall.

When is the best time to go?

The fall season in Switzerland is from September to mid-November. Most mountain resorts and cable cars in Switzerland stay open till the end of October (then they close for maintenance). If there is warm weather in early November, some mountains may re-open for weekends if the weather is nice. On the other hand, if there is early snow, they can quickly start their winter season. Please always check the website and the webcam of the place before you go. Some very popular tourist destinations (e.g., Titlis, Schilthorn, or Jungfraujoch) are open year-round, but in this post, I don’t want to focus mainly on them.

When do leaves change their color?

Peak foliage season can change from year to year. Leaves usually start changing colors in Switzerland in early October – depending on the altitude. There are so many factors that affect their color: rain, wind, temperature, etc. Here, you can find the foliage map , where you can check the foliage update in Switzerland.

Where to go and what to do

Enjoy some easier hiking trails in Switzerland in November.

For wine lovers, November is one of the best times to visit Zurich . This is the month when the city hosts its popular wine expo, Expovina Zurich, where visitors can enjoy two weeks of wine and festivities all over the city.

Before the season’s first snowfall, you can still enjoy some easy hikes around Switzerland. The paved walk between Klewenalp and Stockhütte is still open and delivers dramatic mountain scenery all around. The panorama trail from Rigi Kulm is also easily accessible, which offers spectacular views of Lake Lucerne and Lake Rug. But do check the local weather updates before you decide to go on a hike, as some hiking trails might close once the first snow falls.

If you can get to the alpine regions between Zermatt and Brig at the beginning of November, you can still be lucky enough to witness the marvelous fall foliage. Regions in the south generally still retain their autumn hues well into early November. Here are our tours to Zermatt .

You can catch a train ride on the Bernina Express in Switzerland.

The panoramic Glacier Express train between Saint Moritz and Zurich is closed in November, but it is still possible to take regional trains along the same route to witness the changing scenery and the unforgettable views of the Matterhorn and Rhone River. The Bernina Express also operates in November from Thursdays to Sundays, so there is still one last chance to catch a slow and scenic ride.

On this day, people gather to attend a festive fair and buy various goods from local merchants. There are other entertaining markets like the Herbstmarkt in Weinfelden and the Truffle Market in Murten where food lovers can indulge in the best Swiss dishes. Visit places like Basel and Zurich which open their Christmas markets in the last week of November so you can welcome the festive season in Swiss-style.

Some of the most popular things to do in Switzerland are hiking, taking train rides, and enjoying indulgent food. All these activities are still possible in November, particularly if you are visiting in the early half of the month.

LUCERNE TRAVEL GUIDE – NOVEMBER

November is the perfect time to take a trip to Lucerne, Switzerland! While Switzerland is amazing all year, I enjoyed visiting in November because Lucerne was much less crowded and the weather was perfect for wandering the town. Below, I’ve put together a complete Lucerne travel guide with the best things to do in town.

Lucerne is situated on Lake Lucerne, which is the fourth largest lake in Switzerland. It’s considered the heart of Switzerland due to its central location. The city is about an hour south of Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland, making Lucerne an easy and beautiful train ride away.

And don’t forget to pin this for later!

Enjoying the views in Lake Lucerne, Switzerland

WHEN TO VISIT

As I mentioned, I visited Lucerne in November which was great! As such, this Lucerne travel guide is perfect for visiting in the fall however, can be utilized year round! The November weather was cool but perfect for exploring and wandering around. The streets weren’t overly crowded and prices were less expensive than the summer months.

I generally recommend visiting Europe during the shoulder season since summers are crowded. The weather is still nice in the off months but, it’s less predictable. The warmest and busiest months in Lucerne are June, July, and August.

LUCERNE HOTELS

Traveling in Switzerland tends to be expensive so finding an inexpensive hotel can be a challenge. We stayed at the Ibis Budget Hotel less than a mile from the Old Town and it was fine. Traveling on a budget is different in Switzerland as I would consider this hotel to be expensive in other European cities! I wouldn’t really recommend it because it wasn’t very comfortable but it was clean and walkable to the city center so we had no complaints. I highly recommend utilizing booking.com in advance to find the best deals.

For this Lucerne travel guide, I recommend spending at least two days in town. You really only need one full day to explore Lucerne. The second day will give you time to visit the nearby Swiss Alps. If you prefer travelling at a slower pace, add another day to your itinerary. If you’re headed to Switzerland, spend at least one week exploring the country!

View of Lucerne, Switzerland

The Swiss Alps are an absolute must! I went to the information center at the train station when I arrived in Lucerne and easily booked a trip to Mount Titlis for the next day. There are a ton of options for both guided and independent trips to the Alps. I actually wanted to book a trip to Mount Pilatus , but unfortunately it was closed. Mount Titlis was the next best option, and it ended up being a perfect day trip!

A day trip to Mount Titlis includes a train ride from Lucerne to Engelberg which is the city at the base of the mountain. From there, you take a total of three cable cars to reach 10,000 feet! The last cable car rotates which was awesome because you get a 360 degree view of the Alps! When you reach the top, there are a number of activities to check out. My favorites were the cliff walk and glacier cave.

Although I did not visit Mount Pilatus , I would check it out if it is open while you’re in Lucerne. It is on my bucket list to make the excursion next time I’m there!

KAPELLBRUCKE BRIDGE

The Kapellbrücke Bridge is the main pedestrian bridge in Lucerne spanning over the Reuss River. The name translates to Chapel Bridge is the wooden bridge and connects Lucerne’s downtown. Built over 650 years ago, the Kapellbrücke Bridge is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. It was initially built to help protect the city of Lucerne from attacks but now serves as one of Switzerland’s main tourist attractions. The bridge is over 170 meters long with gorgeous paintings along the roof of the walkway.

Lucerne, Switzerland

CHURCH OF ST. LEODEGAR

The Church of St. Leodegar is most well-known for its Renaissance architecture in Switzerland. The original church dates back to the 8th century but burned down in 1633. The Roman Catholic Church was built on the foundation of the previous church and was completed in 1639. It is also known for its organ which had the tallest and heaviest pipe in the world. It has been extended several times and now there are 7,374 pipes and 111 registers weighing 30 tons.

WANDER THE STREETS

Similar to most European cities, Lucerne has an Old Town and a New Town making it a great place to wander around. The Old Town is truly picturesque with beautiful well preserved streets. I suggest going on a walking tour to learn more about the history and notable buildings in town. The cobblestone streets are filled with a ton of restaurants and shops so take your time and enjoy. We found a number of philanthropy shops that had really cute accessories and decorations. The New Town in Lucerne is across the river from the Old Town by the train station.

If you happen to visit during the holidays, the streets are filled with holiday lights and decor! There are a few Christmas Markets throughout the city as well most of which open the first week of December.

Streets of Lucerne, Switzerland

MUSEGG WALL & TOWER

Lucerne is a walled city with nine towers forming around the town. The Musegg Wall and Tower date back to the 13th century consisting of an inner and outer ring. The fortifications are considered the longest and most well-preserved defensive walls in Switzerland. They’re open to the public from April through November. Unfortunately, if you’re visiting in November you won’t be able to walk them but you can learn about each of the towers and their role in history.

EAT SWISS FONDUE

Switzerland is known for cheese fondue which began as a way to use aged cheeses and bread during the winter months in the 18th century. Villagers purchased cheese in the summer months to be used in the cold winter months. The more the cheese aged the worse it tasted so people started to heat the cheese with garlic and herbs. This way they could dip the stale bread into the flavorful cheesey mixture. It’s a very rich dish but it’s a staple on a trip to Switzerland. I ate at the Fondue House and highly recommend it.

Fondue House, Lake Lucerne

SWISS CHOCOLATE & SWISS FONDUE

While there are a number of chocolate shops in Switzerland, Läderach was one of my favorites! There’re Läderach’s all over Switzerland, so be sure to stop in for some Swiss Chocolate.

Personally, I enjoyed chocolate fondue more than cheese fondue… probably due to my obsession with chocolate. We went to Zunfthausrestaurant Pfistern for chocolate fondue and it was amazing! They gave us a ton of options of fruits and sweets to dip into the fondue.

Zunfthausrestaurant Pfistern, Lake Lucerne

I hope this Lucerne travel guide helps you plan your trip to Lucerne, it’s such a gorgeous city with so much to offer! The cobblestone streets and shops along the lake are a site to see. Making it back to Lake Lucerne and Switzerland in general is high on my bucket list!

Safe Travels,

Switzerland In November: Things To Do, Weather & Temperature

November is the right time to visit Switzerland if you want to avoid crowds.

Get to know Swiss cities, visit museums, galleries, restaurants, delicatessens, and of course, chocolate shops, enjoy well-organized tours, or go on a self-exploring adventure.

It is late autumn, so the temperatures are slightly lower than in October.

In Zurich in November, the average temperature ranges from 2.2°C to 7.2°C. There are 11 rainy days and 62 sunny hours.

In Bern and Lucerne, the average temperature in November ranges from 1°C to 7°C.

On average, there are 10 rainy days in Bern, and in Lucerne, it rains one day less per month in November, but that’s why there are 65 sunny hours in Bern, while in Lucerne, there is even ten hours less sunshine.

In Lausanne in November, the average temperature ranges from 4°C to 9°C. There are 10 rainy days and 78 sunny hours.

In Basel and Geneva, the average maximum temperatures in November are the same and rise to 9°C, but Geneva has a degree lower minimum temperature of 2°C.

Therefore, you can expect 10 rainy days in both Basel and Geneva in November, but that’s why Geneva has two more hours of sunshine than Basel, which has 66 hours of sun.

In November, the average temperature in Lugano ranges from 5°C to 11°C. In addition, there are 8 rainy days and 133 sunny hours.

In the mountains, the ski season starts in December.

As a result, many mountain resorts are closed in the off-season and start working only at the beginning of the ski season, but some work in November.

Chances are good that the weather will be nice in November and you can take advantage of that to visit them.

One piece of clothing advice. It is best to wear several layers of clothing, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweatshirts, and coats.

Also, due to the possibility of rain, it would be desirable if your shoes were water resistant.

Castles are scattered throughout Switzerland. Therefore, November may be a suitable month to embark on such a romantic adventure.

Aarburg Castle, Hallwyl Castle, Rapperswil Castle, Castles of Bellinzona, Tourbilion Castle, Visconteo Castle, Aigle Castle, and Burgdorf Castle are just some of the castles on our list of suggestions to visit.

Table of Contents

Urban Adventure: Swiss Cities

You can tour Zurich on your own, but we recommend you opt for an organized tourist tour. You can get all the information and book guides at the Main Railway Station.

With a guide, you can tour the Old Town on foot and learn all the secrets you would otherwise miss. You will also get first-hand information about the best places with refreshments.

Walk the streets where Einstein, James Joyce, and Wagner walked, and learn a little about their lives when they were residents of Zurich.

Gourmets will find the Zurich Food Tour the most interesting.

The restaurants that are most popular with the local population are visited on foot, and they get acquainted with local specialties. Bon appetit!

E-bike tours are suitable for getting to know parts of Zurich outside the center.

This way, you will see works of art in public places, graffiti, and installation art. In addition, you will get a much better impression of the city’s architecture because you will pass through many more streets.

If you take a bus tour, you will see some sights such as the Zurich Opera House, Lake Zurich, Bahnhofstrasse, and Old Town.

In addition, the bus stops in the Old Town and at Lake Zurich for photography.

You can also tour Zurich by taking a ferry across Lake Zurich or get a better view of it from the air by taking the cable car to the Felsenegg viewpoint.

The old city center is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and you should definitely get to know it.

You will enjoy exploring its streets of grand arcades and towers, and the fountains will bubble as if they, too, are telling you about the eight-centuries-old history of the city.

You can rent an audio guide with detailed explanations of the buildings located in the old town. You can set the audio guide to English, Spanish, German, Italian, and French.

where to visit switzerland in november

To begin with, you can go on a panoramic tour of Geneva by bus. The old town is spectacular, and the famous Flower Clock will delight you.

Or you can walk around the old town with the help of tour guides. This way will certainly allow you to find out and see more.

While in Geneva you should take the opportunity to visit France and visit the medieval Alpine town of Annecy.

To be in Switzerland, and even in Geneva, and not take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy chocolate ideally, would be a failure.

Chocolate Flavors Tours is a three-hour tasting journey through Swiss chocolates’ aromas and shapes.

In the two-hour walking tour of Basel’s old town, you’ll have enough time to discover everything you want to know about the Tinguely Fountain, the Town Hall, or Cathedral Hill.

Later, you can stroll on your own along the winding streets full of the spirit of bygone times.

Once you get to know Lausanne and visit all its attractions, you might consider a trip. About forty minutes away from Lausanne is Gruyeres.

You will be genuinely amazed by the beauty of the preserved medieval architecture of this city.

The famous cheese is also named after Gruyeres, so don’t miss a visit to the “Maison du Gruyeres.” You will learn how this cheese was made from generation to generation.

From November 11 to 19, the Blues Festival takes place in Lucerne.

You will have the opportunity to hear world-class blues stars at Grand Casino Lucerne, Hotel Seeburg, and Hotel Schweizerhof.

In Lucerne, you must visit the Swiss Museum of Transport.

Park Hotel Vitznau, on the beautiful shores of Lake Lucerne, is only 26 kilometers from Lucerne.

In addition to everything that a modern spa center can offer, only here can you enjoy the magical view of the lake from the heated pool.

Which mountains to visit in Switzerland in November?

October is the end of the season for many Swiss mountain resorts. They start working in December when the ski season starts.

Even those mountain resorts that do not break the season may be closed in November due to bad weather conditions. It is not uncommon for a mountain resort to close without notice.

The authorities of these resorts reserve the right to react immediately if the paths become slippery and unusable due to rain or wet snow, and some are even dangerous due to possible landslides.

But don’t worry; with timely notification, it is possible to avoid such inconveniences.

The Swiss are known for their precision and good organization. Therefore, you will easily find out whether the mountain resort is open or temporarily closed due to bad weather conditions.

After the hiking season ends, sometime in mid-October, public traffic to the mountains is reduced or, in some cases, completely abolished.

Therefore, it is advisable to check the schedule of departures and arrivals.

Late autumn in November is magical in the Swiss mountains. Fresh air and beautiful landscapes will surely please you.

Therefore, if the weather is sunny and warm, do not miss the opportunity to visit one of these mountains, which remain open for tourists even in the November off-season.

MOUNT RIGI

The Rigi mountain range is located in central Switzerland and is surrounded by three lakes: Lucerne, Zug, and Lauerz.

Mount Rigi itself is a peninsula on Lake Lucerne. It can be easily reached by cable car or railway, and it is a memorable experience to travel there on the first European train with gears, which is supposed to have been running as far back as 1871.

Going to this destination in November is no problem because everything is open and works throughout the year.

If you reach Rigi Kulm, after a short break in the fresh air and enjoying the view, you can walk along the panoramic path.

From numerous viewpoints and terraces, which you will discover on Mount Riga, unique landscapes are offered.

Restaurants are always open regardless of the season, as are the mineral baths in Riga Kaltbad.

For the Swiss, this is a favorite mountain for rest and recreation; they call it the Queen of the Mountains.

On Rigi mountain, almost ninety square kilometers have been arranged for recreation and sports, and the hiking trails extend to one hundred and twenty kilometers.

The average November temperature in Riga Kaltbad ranges from a high of 7°C to a low of 1.5°C.

Interestingly, November is the driest month in Riga Kaltbad but also the month with the shortest sunny periods. On average, it is not cloudy for only 8.8 hours during the day.

STOOS – FRONALPSTOCK

Fortunately, the cable cars from the viewpoint of Fronalpstock do not stop working after the summer season ends in October.

It’s great news because it would be a shame to miss the spectacle that offers an unsurpassed panoramic view.

Why is it unbeatable? Because there is an unobstructed view of the entire three hundred and sixty degrees!

From that place, you can see the mountains Uri Rotstock, Glarus, Glärnisch, and Tödi, the central Swiss mountains Pilatus and two Mytehem, Solothurn’s, Weisenstein, and ten lakes.

How to get to Stoos?

If you plan to visit Fronalpstock, you can take the train or bus to Schwiz and then take the funicular to Stoos.

You can also reach Stoos by cable car from Morschach. In that case, travel by train to Brunnen and then by bus to Morschach.

The average November temperature in Stoos ranges from a maximum of 4.3°C to a minimum of -1.9°C.

The average air humidity is 84%. On average, there are 15.6 rainy days in November and 3.2 snowy days.

where to visit switzerland in november

Ebenalp is the northernmost peak of the Appenzeill Alps. Its height is 1,640 meters.

You can go from Wasserauen to Ebenalp by cable car if the weather is nice. The Aesher cliff restaurant is also open in November.

From the plateau on which the cable car is located, there is an enchanting view of the rolling hills of Appenzella.

A hiking trail leads to Sealpsee from Ebenalp, which is quite dangerous and demanding even in summer conditions, so it would be best to walk to Sealpsee on the existing road.

The average November temperature in Wasserauen ranges from a high of 7.2°C to a low of 0.1°C.

KLEWENALP-STOCKHÜTTE

The Klewenalp-Stockhütte mountain resort is about fifteen minutes from Lucerne. You can reach it via the A2 Basel-Chiasso highway. It is located in the mountains of central Switzerland above Lake Lucerne.

If you want to avoid the traffic jams, you can also reach it by ferry and park in the valley in Beckenried or Emmetten.

It takes you about ten minutes to get the longest cable car in central Switzerland that goes up to 1600 meters above sea level and the Klewenalp, and from Emmetten, you can take a gondola ride up to 1286 meters above sea level.

In November, the gondola and cable cars operate only on weekends.

The average November temperature in Emmetten ranges from a high of 7°C to a low of 1.1°C.

BRAUNWALD – RUBBER

Braunwald is located in east central Switzerland, in the Canton of Glarus.

The Gumen cable car operates every weekend until the very end of November.

But, of course, the condition is that the weather is good. The Gumen lift does not work in November, regardless of the weather, as well as the restored Gumen and Ortstockhaus.

But that’s okay, the funicular to the alpine village runs all year round, without interruption.

Braunwald also offers the possibility of hiking along the panoramic trail. However, if you are planning this activity, you should know in advance that November in Braunwald is a cold month.

The average November temperature in Braunwald ranges from a high of 6.5°C to a low of 0.2°C.

We don’t want to be pessimistic, but you should know that it rains a lot in Braunwald in November and that there are ten rainy days on average.

The advice is to dress warmly and have waterproof jackets and shoes in case of rain.

CHÄSERRUGG

Chäserrugg is part of the Churfirsten Massif, which consists of seven mountains. It is 2,262 meters high.

In the north, there is a gentle slope, while in the south, there is a cliff that descends about 1,900 meters to the Lake of Walensee. Unfortunately, the Toggenburg mountain resort is only partially open in November.

There is a cable car from Unterwasser to Chäserrugg viewpoint, but only on weekends.

However, it is possible to walk along the cliffs themselves safely, and you will remember the view from there forever: the peaks of the Alps line up to the end of the horizon.

The average November temperature in Unterwasser ranges from a high of 7°C to a low of 1°C.

LENZERHEIDE – ROTHORN

Lenzerheide is a resort in the Arosa region, in the canton of Graubünden.

It is located in an alpine valley, and one of the hiking trails leads to a local attraction, the ruins of the medieval Belfort castle, which was probably built in the early 1200s.

The mountain bike park is open every weekend throughout November, and the Lenzerheide Rothorn cable car also operates, weather permitting.

The average November temperature in Lenzerheide ranges from a high of 3°C to a low of -5°C.

NIEDERBAUEN-KULM

Niederbauen-Kulm is a mountain in central Switzerland above Lake Lucerne. It is 1,923 meters high.

In November, the cable car operates only on weekends, with favorable weather conditions.

Restaurants are also open on weekends.

The cable car from Flüelen to Eggberge operates all year round without interruption in the November low season.

In just ten minutes, you reach an altitude of 1,446 meters above sea level, from where the view falls on the Reuss valley, Lake Urnersee, the Gotthard region, Spannort, Krönten, and Rigi.

Above Lake Urnersee, from the sunny terrace, one usually goes for walks on well-designed hiking trails that pass through forests and across fields.

By the way, Eggberge is known as a place to escape from the fog because when the whole environment is covered with fog, it is sunny on Eggbergee.

In November, not all restaurants remain open, but those that do in the off-season offer good food in a pleasant alpine environment.

The average November temperature in Flüelen at the foot of the Eggbergee ranges from a high of 7°C to a low of 1.5°C.

On average, there are nine rainy days in November in Flüelen, and there is a lot of fog and clouds, so there are only 55 sunny hours in the whole month.

But it’s at the foot of the Eggberge, and up there, you’ll be greeted by sunshine as soon as you step off the cable car.

STANSERHORN

In the Stanserhorn mountain resort, you will only be able to use the funicular and cable car until mid-November.

However, this mountain is perfect for you if you are a fan of rotating restaurants. In addition to a short panoramic trail and a lookout point, there is also a rotating restaurant at the top.

The Stanserhorn is located in the canton of Nidwalden, and its highest peak is 1,898 meters above sea level.

The average daily November temperature in Stans ranges from 7.2°C to a minimum of 0.8°C.

If you decide to visit the canton of Bern and Niesen, do it by mid-November because, after that, the funicular to the top stops working.

Niesen rises to an altitude of 2,362 meters.

By the way, steeplechase races are traditionally held on Niesen in June. The fun fact is that it is the longest staircase in the world! It has 11,674 steps, which is why Niesen is called the Swiss pyramid.

Even though there are no races in November, at least there are no crowds, so if there is no ice on the stairs, you will be able to try your hand at this challenge.

Mount Pizol is located in the northeast of Switzerland in the canton of St. Gallen. Its highest peak reaches a height of 2,844 meters.

Last year, on the weekend of October 29, all the restaurants were open, and all the summer cable cars were working. The reason for that was the excellent weather.

If we are lucky, maybe this year it will happen again in November, and perhaps the weather will be favorable so that the Bad Ragaz Pardiel gondola, which goes to the Heidi-themed trail, will be available for at least a weekend or two.

The average November temperature in Pizol ranges from a maximum of 7°C to a minimum of -1°C.

It was recorded that in Pizol, there are, on average, fifteen days without precipitation and that in the other fifteen, on average, it snows on 8 days, and there are seven rainy days.

MOUNT PILATES

Mount Pilatus is actually a mountain massif. The highest peak of Pilates is Tomlishorn, with an altitude of 2,128 meters.

A footpath leads to it from the Esel viewpoint. If conditions permit and the path is safe, you can hike first to Esel and then to Tomilshorn.

There is a cable car to Mount Pilates, and the restaurants are open even in the off-season.

But unfortunately, the mountain train from Alpnahstad to Pilates stops running after October 20. And a little earlier, the ferry from Lucerne to Alpnahstad stops running until the end of winter.

If you are in Lugano, visit Monte Bre, which is famous for being one of the sunniest spots in Switzerland.

The funicular also operates in November. During the drive, you can enjoy the view of Lugano and lake bay.

Two restaurants and a small church are located at the top.

You can get to the starting station of the cable car from Lugano by bus.

The village of Bre is attractive because many artists lived there, giving it an interesting touch.

The village of Bre is easy to reach because it is not far from the cable car station. Twenty minutes of pleasant walking will be enough.

NIEDERHORN

From the top of the Niederhorn is a view of the entire Bernese Alps and Lake Thun. On the mountain slopes, you will surely see some ibex.

The Niederhorn gondola only runs until mid-November, but the Beatenberg gondola runs all year round.

Thirty minutes is the fantastic journey from Beatenbucht to Niederhorn. The spectacular panorama will enchant you.

Popular autumn magical trips are also organized in November!

SCHILTHORN

The Schilthorn rises to 2,970 meters above sea level. At its foot is the village of Murren, where cable cars run to the Schilthorn viewpoint. Please note that the cable car does not operate after mid-November. However, if the weather is nice, you can explore the village of Murren.

Romantic adventure: The most famous castles in Switzerland

Castles are scattered throughout Switzerland. November may be a suitable month to embark on such a romantic adventure.

These are just some of the castles that can be visited and explored. Enjoy!

Chillon Castle

Chillon Castle is located on Lake Geneva. It was built in the Middle Ages, and many writers wrote about it.

Rousseau was the first to mention it in his work, followed by Flaubert, Hemingway, Goethe, Dickens, and, of course, Lord Byron, who, in 1816, after vacationing on Lake Geneva, wrote the poem “The Prisoner of Chillon.”

In the 12th century, a fortress called the Gate of the Alps was built at the same site where the romantic Scillion Castle is now located.

Even today, it is possible to see something left from that dark past. Fortunately, the fortress later became the summer residence of the Savoy family, and the castle got its present appearance.

Aarburg Castle

Often, a castle preserved to this day was built on the foundations of an earlier fortress or castle.

For example, that’s how Aarburg Castle was built in the 12th century, including an existing smaller castle. The lower floors are carved into the rock.

It is located on a steep rocky hill above the city of Aarburg and the river Aare. It consists of several well-fortified buildings, a stair tower, several living quarters, and a fortress with another tower.

Tourbillon Castle

Tourbillon Castle was impregnable because of its walls and accessible only from the west and east.

It was built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 19th century because it collapsed after a fire in the 15th and 18th centuries.

It dominates the top of the hill. It is open to the public.

Visconteo Castle

At the very entrance to the city of Locarno is the Visconteo Castle, designed by Leonardo Da Vinci.

You can see the Roman glass collection in this castle.

Aigle Castle

Aigle Castle was built in the 12th century. Vineyards surround the castle, so it is not surprising that it houses a museum of wine and vines.

Sometimes tastings of some of the vintages are also organized.

Grandson Castle

Grandson Castle is located on the shore of Lake Neuchatel. It has pointed towers at each corner and is rectangular.

It was built in the Middle Ages. It is open to the public. It has a museum in its structure that is not only thematically connected to the area in which it is located but exhibits old cars, architecture, weapons, and armor.

Rapperswil Castle

Rapperswil Castle was built on Lake Zurich at the beginning of the 13th century. The walls of the triangular-shaped fortress surround the five-sided tower with a clock.

Hallwyl Castle

A wide moat surrounds Hallwyl Castle. It is located north of Lake Hallwil, in the canton of Aargau. It has high stone walls. It is open to the public.

Burgdorf Castle

Burgdorf Castle is located on the banks of the river Emme. Information about its origin and the name of the person who built it is somewhat unclear.

However, it was mentioned for the first time in sources from 1800.

It is open to the public. Inside Burgdorf Castle is the museum in the Knight’s Hall.

Castles of Bellinzona

Castles of Bellinzona is a name for three castles surrounding the fortified walls: Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro.

They were built in the Middle Ages. They have been declared a cultural world heritage by UNESCO.

where to visit switzerland in november

Nidau Castle

In the case of Nidau Castle, the place where it is located was neither a stone fortress nor a smaller stone castle but a series of wooden castles.

Nidau Castle, made of stone, as preserved to this day, was built in the 13th century.

Oberhofen Castle

If you visit this castle, you will certainly not resist taking many of your photos with it in the background because Oberhofen Castle on the shores of Lake Thun is magically impressive.

If a fairy tale could happen anywhere, it is in that place among the great towers and walls surrounded by water and mountains.

Oberhofen Castle was built gradually over the centuries, from the fortress built around 1200.

The way it currently exists was finally completed in 1852.

It is open to the public.

Thun Castle

Thun Castle was built in the 12th century. It is located in the canton of Bern, in Thun.

Around the square central tower are four circular towers. The style is late Gothic.

It is open to the public, but in November, visiting the castle is only allowed on Saturdays from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Wimmis Castle

Wimmis Castle is located in the canton of Bern. Before the castle was built, there was a church from the beginning of the Middle Ages in that place. Next to it was a fortified private estate.

No wonder this place was chosen to build a castle in the 12th century because it is located on top of a hill from which the entire surrounding area is controlled.

Museum Wimmis historic is also located in the village of the same name. You can take the opportunity to learn about the region’s history, which spans millennia.

In the historical time machine, you will learn how the inhabitants of the nearby caves lived, everything about the Roman settlement that once existed in that area, as well as some shocking facts about life and death during the time of the plague.

Morges Castle

Morges Castle is located in the canton of Vaud, in the municipality of Morges. It was built in the 12th century. It is square with circular towers at the corners. Since 1925, it has housed the Vaud Military Museum.

Marschlins Castle

Marschlins Castle is located in the village of Igis in the canton of Graubünden. It was built in the 13th century in the Savoy style.

Two deep moats surround it. The stone bridge was built in the 17th century, and before that, drawbridges were lowered over the ditches.

The castle is privately owned.

Conclusion

We hope all this information will help make your time in Switzerland in November unforgettable. Sometimes it’s good to take advantage of some of the benefits of the off-season.

There is no better time to visit museums and galleries and enjoy the peace and quiet without much crowding. The same applies to restaurants and shops.

As far as visiting one of the mountains is concerned, we hope that the weather in November 2023 will be nice, that late autumn will have fewer rainy days, and that you will enjoy your Swiss adventure!

15 Swiss hikes for November

  • Last Updated: 10 Nov 2021
  • By Tanya, Founder of Swiss Family Fun

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy . Note that p rices and opening times may change without notice.

November in Switzerland is not the best time for hiking. Most mountain resorts are closed, taking a break until ski season in mid December. Also weather and conditions are unpredictable, with many mountain trails either covered in snow or impassable due to mud, ice, landslides, maintenance, etc.

However, you can still hike in Switzerland in November if you choose your hikes carefully, usually at lower elevations under 1500m.

Here are a few hike suggestions for November, focusing on hikes with nice views (rather than forest rambles). As always, make sure to check the webcams, weather reports and websites to judge current conditions before heading out.

1. Uetliberg Panorama Trail

2. bachtel kulm, 3. etzel kulm, 4. türlersee, 5. eggberge • schachtaler höhenweg, 6. zugerberg, 7. swiss path, 8. rigi panorama, 9. ibergeregg pass, 10. lungernsee, 11. jungfrau region – lauterbrunnen valley, 12. monte bre, 13. valle verzasca, 14. lavaux terraces, 15. creux du van.

  • If you want big mountain views, some cable cars are open year round so you can visit panorama viewpoints, even if you can’t hike. See Best mountains to visit in November .
  • Some ski resorts have already opened for pre-season skiing and winter walks. See Where to ski in Switzerland in November .

November hikes in Zürich region

I’ve selected hikes with big views. But of course, there are lots of other low elevation nature walks, rambling through forests and along rivers. For a start, see Easy Nature Walks near Zürich .

This trail along this mountain ridge just west of Zürich city is a great choice for November because it rarely has snow and has nice panorama views across Lake Zürich. If you want a workout, you can hike up and down the mountain (see Three trails to the top of this Zürich mountain ). Or take the easy way and ride the train to the Uetliberg viewpoint then hike across to Felsenegg, where you can ride a cable car down and a train back to the city.

See Uetliberg Panorama Trail .

A short hike up the mountain to 1115m, where you’ll find a restaurant, playground and a tall tower to climb for even better panorama views.

See details for Bachtel Kulm hike

It’s a short hike to this viewpoint over Lake Zürich and the Einsiedeln countryside . The restaurant is still open, so you can get a warm drink and lounge under a blanket with a view.

I’m always recommending this little lake near Zürich, but for good reason. It’s nice in all seasons, even when it snows. There’s a 4 km loop around the lake, easy walking, a little bumpy but possible with an all-terrain stroller if you are determined.

See details for Türlersee winter walk

November hikes in Lucerne area

This mountain near the southern end of Lake Luzern is usually open for hiking in November, with the cable running on the weekends. On weekdays from 7-18 Nov 2022, the Eggberge cable car is running a limited schedule on weekdays. Check current schedule .

So as long as there isn’t snow, you could do the beautiful Biel-Eggberge trail or Wild Hay Trail .

where to visit switzerland in november

This mountain above Zug has lots of easy trails through fields and forest, with occasional views of the lake and mountains. Kids will like the Zuggiblubbi trail. But anyone will enjoy just being in nature and stretching their legs in this lovely place. See details for Zugerbergg theme trail for kids,

Normally you can ride a funicular train to Zugerberg, but it’s under construction through 10 Dec 2022. In the meantime, there is bus service to Zugerberg. See schedule .

where to visit switzerland in november

This path around the southern half of Lake Luzern is a good choice for the shoulder season because if its low elevation. This long distance trail is divided into sections, each with a different character. I’d suggest the sections E & F between Flüelen and Sisikon , which should get more sun than the other sections and less likely to have problems with snow.

Some of the Swiss Path hikes rely on boats to connect the ends of the trail. The boats still run on Lake Lucerne in winter, but with a more limited schedule. So check the schedule and plan carefully.

See Overview of the Swiss Path

where to visit switzerland in november

Since it’s a popular tourist destination, Mt Rigi is open year round. In November, you can usually hike at least part of the Rigi Panorama trail , but check the Rigi webcams to see if the trail is clear of snow.

The cliff walk portion of the trail usually closes at the end of the October. The Krabbel-Kleine Scheidegg cable car is closed for maintenance from 7 -19 November 2022. Check the schedule carefully before heading out.

where to visit switzerland in november

Since you can drive to this mountain pass at 1400m, it’s a good choice for a mountain hike when the cable cars are closed for the season. There’s a nice hike along the ridge over to the Grosser Mythen peaks, which are lovely to admire, even if the trail up the peaks is closed for winter. You can hike out from the pass and back or follow the loop in this trail map .

There are a few restaurants along the path, not sure if they are open in November or not. If this area gets snow in November, it often melts again if we have sunny weather. So check the webcams to see the current conditions.

This gorgeous lake has an easy walking path along its shores, with mountains to admire on all sides. Check the webcams before heading out.

November hikes in Bernese Oberland

If there is no snow and the weather is nice, the following mountains usually stay open on weekends in November: Niesen , Niederhorn , and Oeschinensee . But if there is snow, you could try one of these hikes instead.

The mountain transport and trails in this area are usually closed by mid October. So your best bet is a simple walk down the Lauterbrunnen valley, which is absolutely gorgeous any time of year.

See details for Lauterbrunnen valley walk

November hikes in Southern Switzerland – Ticino

The funicular to this mountain overlooking Lugano is open year round, except a short maintenance break in late January. If the weather is nice, you can hike down to the lake and walk back along the shore to Lugano or catch a bus (the boat back to Lugano only runs through end of October).

I wouldn’t suggest this hike on wet days as some parts are a bit steep and could be dangerous with mud.

See details for Monte Bre hike

where to visit switzerland in november

This beautiful river valley can be a nice place to hike in fall, if a bit cold since the valley is mostly in shadow at this time of year. If using the bus to reach the start of the trail, check the schedule which may run less frequently off-season.

November hikes in Western Switzerland

Harvest season may be over, but the views are still fantastic from this easy path through the vineyards. You can walk as short or long as you like, as the train connects between the villages along the way.

See Lavaux Terrace Hike

vineyards on a hill next to a lake with a small village and mountain views

This impressive natural rock arena is nice to visit any time of year. You can drive quite close to the cliffs and walk along the half circle on a path set safely back from the edge. It’s located in northwestern Switzerland, about a 2hr drive from Zürich.

As I wrote in your “hikes when kids are in school”, I was in Atzmännig yesterday and it was beautiful! Just enough snow and frost to make this more pretty! Great post, very helpful since it is so tricky to hike these days!

That’s great you were able to do this hike so late in the season. Yay!

The capital of Switzerland, Bern sometimes gets overlooked for flashier Swiss cities like Zurich and Geneva. But Bern holds many charms, including an Old City (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) featuring the iconic Zytglogge clock tower, Renaissance-style fountains and the tallest cathedral in Switzerland. The city also boasts many museums – several dedicated to Albert Einstein, who lived in Bern when developing his theory of relativity. Head to Gurten mountain – which you can reach by funicular, by bike or on foot – for sweeping views of the city below.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a small town that boasts more charm and incredible scenery than Brienz. Located in the stunning Bernese Oberland region, Brienz sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Brienz, which features gorgeous turquoise water and is flanked by towering mountains. Some of the best ways to soak up the awe-inspiring setting include strolling picture-perfect Brunngasse (often proclaimed the most beautiful street in Europe), riding the Brienz Rothorn Bahn (which traverses a steam rack railway) and taking a boat tour to lake attractions like Giessbach Falls.

Appenzell captures the essence of Switzerland with rolling hills, a car-free village and well-preserved customs. Visitors can take in the scenic landscape of the Appenzell District (located in the northeastern part of the country) by taking a cable car to the oft-photographed Aescher guest house, picturesquely built into the rock face. Outdoor enthusiasts will also love hiking the region's "experience trails" like the Gonten Barefoot Trail and the Appenzell Chapel Trail, which weaves past 11 chapels. Visit the medieval town of Gruyères if you want to feel as if you've stepped back in time during your next trip. Its good looks (think: car-free cobblestone streets, fountain-filled squares and a 13th-century castle) create an old-world ambiance you're bound to love. Plus, the town is world-renowned for its Gruyère cheese, which you can sample and learn more about at a local cheese dairy or cellar. Sampling chocolate is also a must-do here, so be sure to check out a chocolate factory or attend a chocolate workshop while in town.

Mürren, a small alpine town in the Jungfrau Region, is an ideal getaway for movie buffs and adventure seekers. A little more difficult to reach than other destinations on this list, Mürren's car-free status means travelers must arrive on foot, by bike or via public transportation. Once here, travelers can take a cable car to the summit of Mount Schilthorn, whose iconic revolving 360-degree restaurant was featured in the 1969 James Bond film, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." When is the best time to go to Switzerland?

where to visit switzerland in november

Choose the best time for your visit to Switzerland with this seasonal guide. Claudia Gori for Lonely Planet

Spend any length of time in Switzerland , and you’ll come to realize just how distinct the seasons are here and how well the country wears them.

Winter, with its snow-laden peaks, groomed pistes and bluebird days, is peak time for skiers and winter walkers, while summer draws visitors for its pleasantly warm temperatures, high alpine hiking trails and lake life.

Spring and autumn are also appealing: cheaper flights, milder temperatures, quirky festivals and the chance to catch the countryside in flux, from the new bloom of alpine flowers in May and June to the fiery orange blaze of larch trees and vineyards in the fall. Plan your trip around your preferred activities and your budget , and you’ll find your own best time to experience this ever-changing country.

July to August is the time for hiking – or partying

Peak summer in Switzerland is tip-top , to borrow the Swiss German phrase. Barring the odd storm, it’s nearly always warm and sunny, though it can occasionally get very hot, meaning the best place to be is in the cooler air of the high mountains. Switzerland’s vast number of hiking trails , in the Alpes Vaudoises, the  Bernese Oberland or  Graubünden , offer cow-strewn meadows, vertiginous views and glimpses of ibex, marmots and eagles.

Book ahead for a dorm bed in a Swiss Alpine Club cabin – simple hostels strung across the Alps in glorious locations – or stay in one of the grandes dames of the Swiss mountains, such as the  Rigi Kulm Hotel above  Lake Lucerne or the  Berghotel Schynige Platte overlooking  Interlaken , two of the country’s longstanding mountain hotels.

Road cyclists are also spoiled for choice, with the gruelling switchbacks of mountain passes including the Furka, Gotthard and Grimsel presenting the biggest challenges, while mountain bikers hitch their wheels to a ski lift in Verbier to tackle its downhill trails.

Summer is also party time. Check out big names in music at the  Montreux Jazz Festival , the  Gurten Festival near the Swiss capital,  Bern  and the huge techno festival  Street Parade in  Zürich . And don’t miss Swiss National Day, August 1. Join in the celebrations by having  brunch on a farm (booking ahead is essential), watching a city fireworks display or enjoying the wine, raclette and entertainment in any town or mountain village.

June to September is ideal for sampling lake life in Switzerland

Hanging out by a lake or river is another typically Swiss summer experience. Hardcore wild swimmers take to the lakes at any time of year, but you’ll find warmer water and more atmosphere in summer, when the lakeshores throng with people sunbathing and barbecuing.

Relax next to  Lake Geneva as part of Vevey’s summer-long  Dolce Riviera festival, swim around Bern in the fast-flowing River Aare, paddleboard on Lake Lucerne, dip in the River Rhine in  Basel or hang out at a riverside badi (public swimming baths) in Zürich. If you’d rather be on the water than in it, summer is also peak season for the ferry companies, which offer trips on all the major lakes.

May and September offer Swiss charm – without the expense

Visiting Switzerland in shoulder season has its advantages. Not only is it less expensive with deals on flights and hotels, but the heat is less intense than in high summer. Each shoulder has a certain appeal. Come in May for blossoming trees, the start of the swimming season (many outdoor pools open in mid-May) and the very enjoyable  caves ouvertes/cantine aperte (open cellars) weekends in the vineyards of  Geneva ,  Vaud ,  Valais ,  Neuchâtel and  Ticino .

With many of the mountain lifts still open and the weather remaining balmy well into the month, September is perfect for hiking or biking. Be sure to catch a désalpe/alpabzug , when the dairy cows, having spent their summers on the alpine pastures, parade down to the valley farms passing through villages en route – an excuse for the locals to eat Alpkäse (alpine cheese), drink wine and make merry. The best known is held in  Charmey , near Gruyères.

Another September party is the  grape harvest festival in Lutry, which celebrates the end of the wine-growing year in The Lavaux , the centuries-old vineyards between Lausanne and  Montreux . The area also makes for pretty autumnal hiking, with wine-tasting spots en route.

Panorama of autumn vineyards in the Lavaux-Oron District, with Lake Geneva in the distance.

October and November are rich with fall colors and food events

There’s a reason why this is the cheapest time to visit Switzerland. With the mountain lifts and many hotels closed, villages can be sleepy and the weather unpredictable. But if you get a sunny day and use the bus or train to reach the start of a hike, you’ll be rewarded with a blaze of color in the trees that most visitors never see. It’s also  a great time to eat , with many restaurants serving game meats with traditional accompaniments (chestnuts, sprouts, red cabbage, berries and Spätzli – a sort of Swiss pasta). A number of food events are also worth exploring, including two in the  Swiss Jura : the truffle market in Bonvillars, and the  Feast of St Martin in Porrentruy, where you can fill your belly with as much pork as you can eat.

Andermatt village in the Swiss Alps covered in snow.

December to April is best for snow seekers and carnival-goers

Snowsports dominate winter. Skiers and snowboarders love the long groomed slopes and off-piste terrain of big-name resorts such as  Zermatt , Verbier and Laax, but with a lift in almost every mountain village, Switzerland has something for all levels and budgets. Meanwhile, dedicated trails for winter walking, cross-country skiing and tobogganing mean winter isn’t just for powder hounds.

In February and March, carnival season brings traditional guggenmusik bands (brass bands playing oompah-style music) to many towns and cities. The best-known carnival is Basel’s three-day street party,  Fasnacht . Darker traditions abound, too: visit the  Lötschental for its parade of fearsome, mask-wearing Tschäggätta , and the Valais village of  Evolène for a carnival dominated by fur-clad monsters and giant straw-people.

10 Best Towns to Visit in Switzerland With Fairy-tale Castles, Stunning Mountain Views, and Gorgeous Alpine Lakes

The best small towns in Switzerland include lakeside retreats, historic villages, and destinations tucked away in the Alps.

where to visit switzerland in november

Margarita Almpanezou/Getty Images

Switzerland’s beauty is legendary, and it comes in all forms — from snow-capped mountains and freshwater lakes to picturesque pastoral scenes and charming architecture. While the country’s larger cities are gorgeous in their own right, it’s in the small towns and tiny villages that you can fully immerse yourself in this Swiss splendor. Plus, with over 2,000 municipalities, Switzerland offers a seemingly endless number of day trips and pit stops.

Now you just have to decide where to go. “Most travelers have limited time and want to pack as much as possible into an itinerary, which turns into moving from one hotel to the next and limits time to explore the region,” says Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor Sofia Markovich . Instead of switching up your location every couple of days, Martin Meier, a spokesperson for Switzerland's national railway company, SBB , recommends “choosing a small town as a home base and planning several excursions by public transport from there.” It’s a travel strategy that may seem difficult to Americans, but it’s relatively easy in Switzerland — especially if you invest in the Swiss Travel Pass , which grants you unlimited travel by train, bus, and boat.

As you begin to plot out your trip, remember that Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. “This not only influences how one speaks in each region but also has a great cultural impact that is reflected in architecture, cuisine, and even the character of people,” says Valérie Chételat, a hiking guide with Switzerland Trekking . “For a proper dose of 'Swissness,' I suggest you visit at least one small town of each language region.”

With her advice in mind, read on to discover the best towns in Switzerland, according to local experts.

Pintai Suchachaisri/Getty Images

According to Markovich, Vevey, which is located on the shores of Lake Geneva, “offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance that makes it an appealing travel destination.” When visiting Vevey, travelers can discover the town’s art galleries, music festivals, and theaters, as well as Alimentarium , the world’s first museum dedicated to food and nutrition, and Chaplin’s World , a museum honoring Charlie Chaplin that’s housed in his former residence. For an extra-luxurious trip to Vevey, Markovich recommends Grand Hôtel du Lac : “It offers stunning views, elegant rooms, a spa, and Michelin-starred dining.”

elvirkin/Getty Images

Both Markovich and Meier have Montreux on their list of must-visit small towns in Switzerland. It boasts views of Lake Geneva and the Alps, which Markovich says “makes it a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.” It also hosts the Montreux Jazz Festival in July, bringing music enthusiasts from across the world to the small town. “Whether you're visiting for the music, the mountains, or the magical ambiance, Montreux is a destination that leaves a lasting impression on all who experience its beauty,” she adds. Not planning to visit in July? Meier recommends the Christmas market on the lake, known as Montreux Noël, or a boat trip to Chillon Castle .

ChrisRinckes/Getty Images

"Soglio, often called ‘the gateway to paradise,’ is a remote village high above the Bregaglia Valley in the south of Switzerland. Its exceptional location overlooking the peaks over 10,000 feet will take your breath away,” says Chételat. The Church of St. Lorenzo is the main point of interest in town, but Chételat notes this is also a place where you can find hikes for all fitness levels. “Choose between an easy stroll through the picturesque village, a short hike in the nearby chestnut forests, or a multi-day valley trek,” she says.

Joanne Wastchak/Getty Images

You don’t need to rent a car to access Wengen; in fact, it’s not even allowed. The car-free resort town in the Bernese Oberland is a favorite in both the summer and the winter, as locals and visitors alike take advantage of the town’s hiking and biking trails and access to ski areas. In true Swiss fashion, Wengen features a number of chalet-style homes, snow-capped mountains, and bucolic scenes in nearly every direction. If you’re feeling up for a 30-minute walk from town, follow the trail to the Hunneflue panorama point, where you’ll be rewarded with views of Interlaken and Lütschine Valley.

clu/Getty Images

Vals is a mountain village (with an elevation of about 4,100 feet) that lays claim to a natural 86-degree spring — the only one in the Grisons canton to come directly from the ground. “If you only ever go to one thermal bath in your life, be sure to make it Peter Zumthor’s Therme ,” says Chételat. “The Swiss architect has created a sensational and sensory experience built from locally quarried quartzite slabs. It’s the perfect reward after a strenuous day of hiking or mountain biking to relax in these naturally occurring thermal springs.”

rhyman007/Getty Images

Though it’s larger than some of the other destinations on this list, Sion (population of around 35,000) maintains a decidedly charming, small-town feel. “Every Friday morning, you can discover local products and handicrafts at the old town market ,” says Meier. Travelers also make their way to Sion to see the Tourbillon Castle and the Basilica of Valeria, which sit on opposite hills that tower over Sion at the Rhône Valley; you can’t miss them. Once you’ve wrapped up sightseeing, you’ll be in a good spot to continue to explore Switzerland. “Sion is an ideal starting point for traveling through the Valais and its numerous peaks,” says Meier. One of those peaks, the Matterhorn, may ring a bell.

Stein am Rhein

imageBROKER/Werner Dieterich/Getty Images

If you’d never been to Switzerland and had to picture a Swiss town in your head, there’s a good chance it would resemble Stein am Rhein. Walking through the old town, you’ll see half-timbered houses and colorful, elaborate frescoes around the Rathausplatz (the town square). When you’re done ogling the beauty and snapping photos, head in the direction of St. George’s Abbey — a former Benedictine monastery complex, now a museum — on the Rhine River, or Hohenklingen, a medieval castle that dates back to the 11th century.

La Neuveville

You’ll find the town of La Neuveville on Lake Biel in the western, French-speaking part of Switzerland. “Its cobble-stoned medieval old town is embedded between the lake and the hills of the Jura mountain range,” says Chételat. “I love to enjoy a traditional cheese fondue at Buvette du Débarcadère , an unpretentious pop-up restaurant right on the edge of the water.” When you’re not enjoying a lakeside meal, hire a pedal boat or kayak to paddle around Lake Biel, take a guided history tour, or taste some local wines (La Neuveville has a number of vineyards nearby).

Elenarts108/Getty Images

Meier describes Gruyères as a town where “the Middle Ages meet the film 'Alien,' all surrounded by the fine aroma of Gruyère cheese.” The first part of that description refers to the history and architecture of Gruyères; you can, and should, visit the 13th-century Gruyères Castle while touring the town. His reference to " Alien" stems from the fact that the HR Giger Museum is located in Gruyères. Here, visitors can see the Oscar-winning artist’s surreal paintings, sculptures, and film designs for "Alien," "Alien 3," and "Poltergeist 2." Finally, as you may have guessed, Gruyère cheese was named after the town where it first originated, and today’s visitors can learn more about the cheese and how it’s made at La Maison du Gruyère .

Borisb17/Getty Images

“This small town on the River Aare is considered the most beautiful Baroque town in Switzerland,” says Meier. It’s also full of interesting sites to keep travelers busy and entertained. Old Town Solothurn, which doesn’t allow car traffic, has 11 churches and chapels, plus the same amount of towers and fountains. If you prefer museums, you’ll appreciate the Natural History Museum , the Blumenstein Museum, the Museum of Stones , and Old Arsenal , which has one of the largest weapons collections in Europe. Or, for those travelers who want to soak up the great outdoors, Meier says, “You can combine a visit with a cruise on the Aare or a hike up the Weissenstein.”
