Dodge Journey 0-60 Specs Terms

In the tables above, you'll see a lot of terms that you may not be familiar with. Here's a quick rundown of what they each mean and why each of them is important when it comes to acceleration performance in 0-60 and quarter mile times.

0 to 60 (mph)

This metric measures how quickly a car can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph. It is a common performance measure that is used to compare the acceleration of different vehicles. In general, cars with more powerful engines and better traction will have faster 0 to 60 times. This metric is often used by car enthusiasts and is reported in automotive reviews and specifications.

While 0 to 60 times can be a useful measure of a car's performance, it is important to note that it is just one aspect of a car's overall capabilities. There are many other factors that contribute to a car's performance, including handling, braking, and top speed.

1/4 Mile (sec)

The quarter mile time is another measure of a car's acceleration performance. It is the time it takes a car to cover a quarter mile distance from a standstill. This metric is often used in drag racing, where cars compete to see which can cover the quarter mile distance in the shortest time.

Like the 0 to 60 time, the quarter mile time is a useful measure of a car's acceleration, but it is just one aspect of its overall performance. A car's quarter mile time can be affected by many factors, including the power of its engine, the efficiency of its transmission, and the traction of its tires.

Transmission

The transmission is a mechanical system that transmits power from the engine to the drive wheels of a vehicle. It is an important component of a car's drivetrain and plays a key role in its performance and fuel efficiency. There are several types of transmissions, including:

  • Manual transmissions: A manual transmission requires the driver to shift gears manually using a clutch pedal and a gear shift. Manual transmissions are generally less expensive and can be more fuel efficient than automatic transmissions. However, they require more driver input and can be more difficult to use in stop-and-go traffic.
  • Automatic transmissions: An automatic transmission uses a complex system of gears and clutches to automatically shift gears as the vehicle accelerates. Automatic transmissions are generally more convenient and easier to use than manual transmissions, but they can be less fuel efficient and more expensive.
  • Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs): A CVT is a type of automatic transmission that uses a belt and pulley system to continuously vary the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels. CVTs are generally more fuel efficient than traditional automatic transmissions, but they can be less responsive and may not offer the same level of control as a manual or traditional automatic transmission.

The engine is the heart of a car. It generates the power that moves the vehicle and is an essential component of a car's performance. There are several types of engines, including:

  • Internal combustion engines (ICEs): An ICE is a type of engine that converts fuel into energy through a series of controlled explosions. ICEs are the most common type of engine used in cars and come in a range of sizes and configurations. The most common types of ICEs are gasoline engines and diesel engines.
  • Electric motors: An electric motor is a type of engine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Electric motors are becoming increasingly popular in cars due to their high efficiency and low emissions. Electric cars are powered exclusively by electric motors and do not have an ICE.

The drive type refers to how the power from the engine is transmitted to the wheels of the vehicle. There are several types of drive systems, including:

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD): In a FWD vehicle, the engine powers the front wheels. FWD vehicles are generally more fuel efficient and have a lower cost of ownership than RWD or AWD vehicles. However, they may have less traction and handling performance, especially in performance-oriented applications.
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD): In a RWD vehicle, the engine powers the rear wheels. RWD vehicles tend to have better traction and handling characteristics than FWD vehicles, especially in performance-oriented applications. However, they can be more difficult to drive in slippery conditions.
  • All-wheel drive (AWD): In an AWD vehicle, the engine powers all four wheels. AWD systems can improve traction and stability in a variety of driving conditions, but they can also be more complex and costly to maintain than FWD or RWD systems.

The body style of a car refers to its overall shape and design. There are several types of body styles, including:

  • Sedans: A sedan is a type of car that is typically characterized by a large, enclosed passenger compartment and a separate trunk. Sedans are popular for their spacious interiors and practicality.
  • Hatchbacks: A hatchback is a type of car that has a rear door that opens upwards, allowing access to a cargo area. Hatchbacks are often smaller and more fuel efficient than sedans, but they can offer similar levels of interior space and versatility.
  • Coupes: A coupe is a type of car that typically has two doors and a fixed roof. Coupes are generally smaller and sportier than sedans, with a focus on performance and handling.
  • SUVs: An SUV (sport utility vehicle) is a type of car that is typically larger and more rugged than a sedan or hatchback. SUVs are designed for off-road driving and have higher ground clearance and more rugged construction. They are also popular for their spacious interiors and practicality.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Sophisticated interior
  • family-friendly size
  • available built-in booster seats
  • smart touchscreen interface.
  • Overmatched four-cylinder delivers slow acceleration and poor fuel economy.

For 2013, the Dodge Journey Crew trim boasts a stronger value proposition, as Dodge has added a few more standard features (such as leather upholstery and heated front seats) and reduced its price.

Edmunds says

Though not an obvious choice, the 2013 Dodge Journey has many positive attributes to make it worthy of consideration.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2013 Dodge Journey SE 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.41 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

When it debuted four years ago, the Dodge Journey crossover didn't have much in its favor. We used the comment "Needs Improvement" so frequently on its report card that we were certain its fate as a back-of-the-class entry was sealed. Yet two years later it was more like "Most Improved" as the Journey underwent a complete under-the-skin makeover that put it on the honor roll. Yes, the 2013 Dodge Journey may look the same as that original '09, but they're as different as a scholar-athlete is from the class clown.

Always in its favor has been the Journey's interior versatility. Roomier than your typical compact crossover SUV, the more wagon-like Journey offers a small third-row seat that can accommodate a couple of small kids. That added flexibility, along with its reasonable dimensions, makes the Journey the just-right choice for an ideal family vehicle without the added cost, fuel appetite and parking hassles of the larger three-row crossovers.

Under the hood, it's a tale of two engines -- one desirable and one not. The base four-cylinder is underpowered and its fuel economy isn't that great. The 3.6-liter V6, on the other hand, is one of the most potent engines in this segment, yet it still provides decent fuel economy. Underway, the Journey boasts composed handling and a supple ride, while inside is a stylish cabin fitted with high-quality materials and stocked with user-friendly high-tech features. Other attributes include hidden storage compartments and optional integrated child seats.

Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the 2013 Dodge Journey earns our approval. Of course, there are other impressive choices available as well. We also like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento ; both boast a small but usable third-row seat, better four-cylinder performance and available V6 engines. If a third row isn't a priority, models like the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V are also excellent. But overall the Journey is a respectable pick for a small crossover, particularly with the optional V6.

Performance & mpg

The 2013 Dodge Journey AVP, SE and SXT are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined – not great given its anemic acceleration and thriftier competitors.

Optional on the SXT and standard on the Crew and R/T is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. At the track we recorded a 7.5-second 0-60-mph time for a Journey V6 FWD, an average time for the class. Fuel economy stands at 17/25/20 with front-wheel drive and 16/24/19 with all-wheel drive; both are a little below average for V6-powered small crossovers.

Every 2013 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average performance for its segment.

In government crash tests, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars awarded for frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

The 2013 Dodge Journey's four-cylinder engine just doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving. It also doesn't provide enough fuel economy to justify its lackluster performance. As such, we'd avoid it and step up to the 3.6-liter V6. This engine is used throughout the Chrysler/Dodge lineups, and for good reason: It offers smooth, robust power and decent fuel economy. Unfortunately, its six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift (or two) is needed.

On the move, the Journey is competent for the class, with a smooth ride and secure handling. The latter feels especially confident, boasting precise steering with a light yet still nicely weighted feel to it. That said, a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V likely will feel more agile around town, while the Chevy Equinox provides an even more comfortable and quiet ride on the freeway.

From both design and execution standpoints, the Journey's interior rates as one of the best in the segment. The materials are high in quality, the design is clean and modern and the up-to-the-minute technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the extra-large touchscreen interface available on most models.

Other strengths for the Journey include its clever storage bins and available integrated child seats that make it decidedly family-friendly. Also helping that cause is a versatile seating arrangement. While the Dodge's sliding and reclining second-row seat is now the norm for this class, its optional third-row seat is not. Like the one in the Toyota RAV4, this seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a couple extra kids to a T-ball game, it should come in handy.

In terms of hauling cargo, the Journey offers a total capacity of 68 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. That's a few cubes smaller than the RAV4 and CR-V, but bigger than the Chevy Equinox. For smaller items, the Journey provides storage bins hidden under the second-row floor as well as under the passenger seat.

2013 Dodge Journey models

The 2013 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, R/T and Crew trim levels.

The American Value Package comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat and a six-speaker sound system with a compact touchscreen interface, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The SE adds privacy tinted glass, side roof rails and LED taillights.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, unique front/rear fascias, a cargo cover/net and satellite radio. A premium sound system, sunroof and 19-inch wheels are optional.

The Crew adds a V6 engine, remote start, 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way lumbar adjustment), dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet, a premium audio system, Bluetooth and a fold-flat front passenger seat (with hidden storage bin).

The R/T includes all the Crew features (minus the roof rails) and adds a monochrome exterior treatment, special 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and black perforated-leather upholstery with red stitching.

Some of the higher trim's features are available on the lower trims via option packages, while other available features (depending on trim) include rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a folding/reclining third-row seat, three-zone automatic climate control (with rear air-conditioning), integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear seat entertainment system and a navigation system with an 8.4-inch display.

Impressed with the 0-60 mph acceleration!

I have a GPS speedometer app for my DroidX, and the app has got a 0-60 mph timer built into it. So I took my 2012 Hero AWD 3.6 onto a backroad, and ran a 0-60 mph timing in Autostick mode

I only did one run - 7.4 seconds.

I think that's really impressive for a 4000 lb+ vehicle with a full tank of gas, and contents in the trunk area, and one that will get 22 mpg on average.

I shifted into 2nd at about 6000 rpm - maybe I could shave a couple tenths off that time by shifting closer to redline, and also 'loading' the transmission by reving up to 2000 rpm before releasing brake?

:)

redtomatoman

What app exactly is that? Fun stuff, I agree.

Redline for the Pentastar is 6400 rpm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Pentastar_engine

The engine is electronically protected to prevent over-revving - you hit the redline and the engine rpms hold at the limit. In general, these sorts of engines make more power higher in their RPM range so shifting higher in the rpm range is desirable. Haven't played much yet, but the Pentastar may deliver best acceleration by shifting just shy of the 6400 rpm redline (6300-6350 rpm)

As for the app, it's called GPS Speed Free. Look around though, there may be better apps with more functions in the Marketplace. Can't take screen shots, for example, with GPS Speed Free.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, the Hero did a 7.0 second 0-60 mph today - preloaded the tranny by bringing RPM to 1800 with my foot on the brake, floored and released brake at same time. Think with practice i can get her the high 6.0s. That's great for a vehicle like this. The Pentastar and 6 speed tranny really accelerate!

I'm curious to how your time would compare with letting the tranny in "D" and just letting it do its own thing. I am quite impressed by how the transmission keeps the revs up when you are hard on the gas from a stop. It seems to be programmed to keep the revs up under hard acceleration. How about one more run for the records; this time in D. ??

I did full auto mode that time too, I didn't manually shift. Most guys that drag race Dodge cars with automatic trannys just let the tranny do it's thing.

Fantastic! I would like to drive the Chry 200 with this motor in it. I can't believe the take off in my FWD Journey; I would imagine its even more so in the 200 or Avenger. It will be interesting to see if they do indeed throw a turbo or two on this engine.

The Pentastar with a turbo would be off the charts

bigtsr

Car & Driver reports this for the 200 sedan/Pentastar :

Zero to 60 mph: 6.3 sec

Zero to 100 mph: 16.7 sec

Zero to 110 mph: 20.9 sec

Street start, 5–60 mph: 6.5 sec

Standing ¼-mile: 14.9 sec @ 94 mph

Top speed (governor limited): 120 mph

Braking, 70–0 mph: 181 ft

magnumrtawd

Hello from Toledo Oh.

I currently own a 05 Magnum RT AWD. 0 to 60 times 5.6 to 5.8.

I test drove a new Avenger rt a while back and was very impressed with its zero to 60 acceleration. In fact it felt quicker then my Magnum. Torque steer is bad... You better have a good grip on the wheel when you floor it. Also, Turn off the traction control and power brake it.. It will smoke the tires!!!

This little car could be the Roadrunner of future. And the price is right.

Vibration between 55-75 mph

2013 dodge journey 0 60 mph

  • Add to quote

Hate to bring up another vibration thread but I hate to hijack someone elses thread either. I've searched the forums and can't find the answer I'm looking for. My truck just had new steering linkage and new shocks recently. Also just put on Nitto 285/70/17 terra grapplers. I've had a vibration that drives me crazy between 55-75 mph that I believe has started since new tires. I feel it in the seat and not in the steering wheel which leads me to believe that it is in the rear end. It's worse at 65-70 mph. But then smooths out after 75 but I can still feel it a little bit, just not as bad at higher highway speeds. My tires have been re-balanced 3 times and swapped to different locations on truck. I still get same vibration. I had the carrier bearing replaced 2 days ago and was told U joints and drive line are in good shape. I still have annoying vibration. I don't know what else to do now. I have heard about getting aluminum 1 piece shaft but I'm not sure that will solve this issue and I just don't have funds for it right now. I don't remember this vibration before the new tires but I was dealing with death wobble prior to all this. Death wobble has been cured so now I'm dealing with this vibration. Just looking for any thoughts and/or what others have done for this. Thanks.

ive had u-joints that appeared to be in good shape, but were bad. there usually cheap enough that its worth the shot and piece of mind that you know its not the issue. what your describing definitely sounds like u- joints. are you sure its coming from the rear of the truck? bad ball joints can also do what you are describing as well. you would think you would feel bad ball joints in the steering but its not always the case.

I definitely don't feel it in the steering but I feel it in the seat and it feels like the rear end. The only thing that I have not replaced on the front end is ball joints and wheel bearings. I had a driveline shop inspect everything when they replaced the carrier bearing and I was told all is well. Maybe I need to go to another shop and get a second opinion on the joints. Anyways, thanks for your input Danny.

its a long shot but you can also check your leaf spring bushings and check out your u-bolts. make sure everything is tight. theres even the possibility that your drive shaft threw a weight, so check for an odd clean spot. ive had to chase drive line vibrations before, i know how frustrating it can be.

Will do. Thanks.

Ok here we go. I have an 08 Mega and it had the same problem. It feels like its under your a$$. After the dealer did ball joint, wheel bearings, front axle u-joints, front drive shaft, transfer case bearings, something above the trailer hitch between the frame rails (forgot what they called it) They all needed to be replaced at some point and Chrysler was paying for it. Ended up being a bearing in the front diff. The only place I had the vibration was under my seat nothing in the front end and even with a trailer it felt like that's where it was coming from. So after they tossed a bunch of parts at it all is well and its been over two years that its been ok. The dealer had a rep from Dodge involved and he had no clue he was sorta like those things that are on a bull that are useless.

Thanks Wag. I'm trying to look at everything I can. Tire shop has ordered me two new tires that I hope to get on tomorrow. To me it feels like an unbalanced tire or tires. If the new tires don't work, I told tire shop that I will be returning these tires and getting a different brand. Thinking of Coopers right now. I just found out yesterday that my steering box is has a lot of play in it so I've got to worry about that now too. I've spent more time for the past 3 months going from one shop to another. I'm getting tired of it. I hope to get this resolved soon. I've been wanting to get out and check the things Danny mentioned but it's just been too damn hot out when I get home from work. I appreciate everyone's thoughts on this. I'll update after tires get done tomorrow hopefully.

If it started after changing tires then it's the tires. I had a new set of Dunlop sp5000 installed and the truck drove like it was going down railroad tracks. I changed two rims when I changed tires and raced that night so came up with all kinds of things that could have gone wrong. Had the wheels off and balanced so many times I wore out the lug nuts. My shop supported me, but finally went to another shop who had state of the art balancer with a tire analyzer. Three of the new tires had hard spots that allowed them to balance but rolled rough. My shop gave me a new set of tires and the problem was solved. Of course I had rebuilt everything under the truck by then.

I had my tires done several time with the road force balancer and no change and with the way it felt under my fat a$$ I would of sworn it was coming from anyplace but the front diff. but that cured it about 45K ago.

As long as it is fixed. Sometimes it isn't easy.

Tire shop ordered me two new Nittos. I don't see how two tires is gonna solve it but we'll see. I'm going to have them change out the tires with the most weights on the rims to start. Tires were supposed to be here today but didn't come. Now it's gonna be Saturday. I really need to put someone elses tires on to try out. I'm just tired of this vibration. It's been 3 weeks now.

I went through a lot of time and money chasing my problem and then to have it turn out to be just a set of new tires makes me feel a little dumb and pissed off.

out of curiosity, are the tires d rated or e rated?

Tires are E rated. Up until a couple months ago, I had no idea about D and E rated tires as I had D rated on. I was having Death wobble issues and learned about this. That's why I now have E rated Nittos. My DW has been cured since putting on these tires along with some new steering components. I've been wondering if the DW caused something to have come loose and hence the vibration. I don't remember having the vibrations prior to putting on these Nittos so that's why I believe its the tires. The Nittos were put on about 5 days after installing steering parts. I won't know much more until Saturday when I get a couple of new tires. I'm crawling underneath truck tomorrow morning to double check that everything is tight on rear half of truck. Too hot out now. Only 112 now. Will be 117 by Saturday. Yee Haw!

Checked under my truck this morning and everything seems to be tight. The only question I have is about my front drive shaft. When I grab it I can turn it just a little bit. It will turn maybe a 1/4 in. or less. Is that normal? I know wagntwister mentioned the bearing in his front diff. being his problem.

My 2WD mega cab has some shaking on the highway around 65mph. Far as I can tell apparently the pavement on the highways around here has a bit of wave to it. I can't really feel it on back roads going 65, it's really just the highway. My theory is the fully boxed frame and length of the truck is lending itself to some oscillation due to the wavy pavement. Once I hit 70+ it rides nice and smooth. I had the tires balanced and rotated and the feeling didn't change at all, so doesn't appear to be any tire issues. My truck only has 55k miles on it so I don't expect to have anything wrong suspension wise, not to mention it's 2wd.

A little back and forth on the front drive shaft is normal. It's coming from the ring & pinion backlash that transfers to the drive shaft.

im sure you got it figured out by now....but in my experience with my dodge...I got new tires put on my truck that were not factory size....and when they put them on my truck and balanced um and what not. they wobbled at 70mph so I took um back. they did the balance 3 times for me and told me they would test drive it. When they did they were upset cause it was still vibrating. They ordered 4 new tires and the problem went away. So the issue was with the tires and not my truck. sorry if im late lol

No problem Oklahomaram. It's never too late. Well I finally got the problem solved. Tire shop put on 2 new tires today. I had them swap out the tires that had the most weight. One tire had a pretty big weight on it. I took it for a test drive and it drove smooth for the most part. It definitely improved and was smooth between 60-75 mph. I would say it was a 90% improvement. I can still feel a slight vibration now between 50-55 mph but since the vibration has improved greatly, I'm not too concerned. Tire shop said they will rebalance tires again on Monday. (They didn't get tires in from shipment until almost closing time today.) They didn't want to believe me that it was my tires but it was. I wish I could have gotten them to put on 4 new ones but 2 was a start. It could have only been just one of the tires that was bad. Who knows. Just finally glad that after about 3 weeks of dealing with this and at the cost of a carrier bearing, that my truck is running a lot smoother. Thanks for everyone's input. Hope it helped out anyone else having the same issue. Now I've got to worry about my steering gear box which I found was bad trying to diagnose this vibration issue.

There seems to be a trend that I haven't seen before and that is name band tires that should not have made it out of the factory being delivered and sold to the public. I spent over $650 rebuilding and balancing everything under my truck using my own labor not counting having to deal with my truck driving like sh!t possibly causing damage to suspension just because the manufacturer wouldn't QA their product. IMO this is clearly wrong. I'm a old guy and honestly found it hard to believe that a major tire company was selling name brand defective tires. In my case it was 3 out of 4 tires that were bad. The tire company I bought the tires from lost considerable money rebalancing the tires and remounting them over and over again. They were removed so many times the OEM lug nuts were damaged beyond being useable. Finally I had to put basically my own reputation on line and declare the tires defective and I would let the shop off the hook if they replaced them with another manufacturers tire. Which they agreed to and did without hesitation. This shop took a beating and so did I over a batch of Dunlop SP 5000 tires being defective. If you replace your tires and there is a vibration, count on it being the new tires plain and simple.

I like your thoughts Redtruck. I know the shop I went to has had to take a beating with all the times they have balanced my tires. They also told me that they are taking the hit on the two new tires they had to get for me. They said that Nitto will only give them 10 days to return defective tires. I've been complaining to the shop since day one that these tires were no good so they should have listened to me instead of trying to rebalance these tires for the past 3-4 weeks now. I don't know how a major tire company can tell if a tire is bad in quality control but I'm sure there are test of some sort that they do to check for an out of round tire. Who knows.

To confuse things, my tires would balance, but they had hard spots. Looking at them spinning you would never know there was a problem.

Tyumen: Bourgeois Siberian oil capital

The Lover’s Bridge in Tyumen. Source: RIA Novosti

There’s something different about Tyumen. This city of over half a million people was the first Russian settlement in Siberia. Today, it’s the capital of the vast Tyumen Oblast, or province, that stretches from the Kazakhstan border north to the Arctic Ocean. Tyumen Oblast is home to the majority of Russia’s seemingly limitless oil and natural gas reserves. Some of the world’s largest drilling companies have officers here, and Tyumen residents enjoy much higher incomes than elsewhere in Russia. The result is a cosmopolitan city with a bright outlook on the future.

A stop in Tyumen provides an interesting glimpse into how modern Russia’s oil revenue has influenced Siberia’s oldest Russian city. Tyumen is a great stopover point on the Trans-Siberian Railroad and a short ride from Yekaterinburg (five hours) or Tobolsk (four hours).

How to get there

Direct flights run each day between Tyumen and Moscow or St. Petersburg ($450 roundtrip). Tyumen is also located on the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Trains leave Moscow in the afternoon and evening ($110-250, 32-38 hours).

In the 16th century, Russia started expanding eastward into parts of Central Asia ruled by the Tatars, an Islamic people who still live thoughout Russia. A band of Cossacks wrested control of Tyumen from the Tatars in 1580. Six years later, Russians established a fort in Tyumen on the Tura River.

For centuries, Tyumen vied with the nearby city of Tobolsk—once the official capital of Siberia—for the prestige of the region’s most important city. Tyumen won in the end, when the Trans-Siberian Railroad bypassed Tobolsk and was routed through this now oil-rich city.

Tyumen played an important role in Russian history during times of war. At the beginning of the Russian Civil War, the Bolshevik Red Army slowly pushed the White Army, commanded by Admiral Alexander Kolchak, into Siberia. Kolchak and his anti-Bolshevik forces holed up in Tyumen until the Red Army overtook them in January of 1918.

During the Second World War, many Russian industries were moved away from the front to Siberian cities. Tyumen had already become an industrial capital during the early Soviet era, and the city became an ideal spot to relocate Russia’s western factories. As Nazi forces approached Russia in 1941, the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin was sent from the Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square by train to the Tyumen State Agricultural Academy for safekeeping. In 1945, Lenin’s body was shipped back to Moscow.

Where to stay

Located in a stunningly remodeled Soviet building, The Hotel Vostok offers modern rooms ($80-125). Far more luxurious—and twice as expensive—is The Hotel Tyumen .

Some of the factories relocated to Tyumen during wartime remained in the city. The discovery of oil in the region catapulted Siberia’s oldest Russian settlement to further prosperity. Modern Tyumen is a vibrant city with a number of universities and a revamped center well-suited for exploration by foot.

Start your walking tour around central Tyumen on Ulitsa Respubliki. The city’s main drag has fine pedestrian walkways and leads wanderers past an impressive collection of tsarist-era buildings that recall Tyumen’s importance in the beginning of Russia’s colonization of Siberia.

From the southeastern end of Ul. Respubliki, head north toward the Tura River and take a brief side trip onto Ul. Ordzhonikidze to visit the Fine Arts Museum (47 Ul. Ordzhonikidze) which houses exhibits of classical Russian and Soviet art as well as traditional bone carving and works produced by the native people who live in the far north of Tyumen Oblast.

Back on Ul. Respubliki, you’ll soon see the city’s requisite Lenin statue by the local government buildings. A block away, opposite Lenin, is Tyumen’s city park, a delightful place to walk or hop on one of its amusement rides.

Most Siberian cities developed under the watchful eyes of the atheist Soviet regime and churches are usually not Siberia’s strongpoint. But this isn’t true in four-centuries-old Tyumen. Strolling up Ul. Respubliki, you’ll soon come to the Church of the Saviour (41 Ul. Lenina) and the Znamensky Cathedral (13 Ul. Semakova). Each of these stunning Baroque-influenced churches are located right off Ul. Respubliki and were built in the late 18th century.

Tyumen is also famous for its historic wooden houses. Heading further up Ul. Respubliki, stop to wander around some of the side streets and snap photos of these ornate wooden structures which provide a glimpse back in time. Near the Tura River, you’ll pass a civil war monument in remembrance of the Tyumen natives who died fighting the White Army and the Tyumen State Agricultural Academy (7 Ul. Respubliki) an impressive building in its own right where Lenin was stored during the Second World War.

Special Project: Discovering Russia

Near the end of Ul. Respubliki, take a walk over the Tura River on the Lover’s Bridge, a suspension bridge open to foot traffic only that has become one of Tyumen’s iconic sights. The other side of the river is a great place to see more of Tyumen’s signature wooden houses as well as take in the churches scattered around the city center.

Save the best for last and visit the Trinity Monastery (10 Ul. Kommunisticheskaya) at the end of Ul. Respubliki. A white wall surrounds the monastery, giving it the appearance of a mini-kremlin, and the golden onion domes of the 18th century churches within should not be missed.

Although navigating Tyumen is straightforward enough, the St. Petersburg-based travel company OSTWEST can arrange a city tour in Tyumen and the surrounding countryside.
