Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium is a purpose built football stadium located in the port city of Piraeus within the administrative region of Attica. Home to famous Greek team Olympiacos F.C, the stadium which dates back to the 19th Century currently has a capacity of 32,115.

Olympiacos Stadium Guide

Georgios karaiskakis stadium history.

Olympiacos’ stadium today may have share the same plot as land as the original 1895 built stadium but in terms of appearance there is little in common. Opening as the Neo Phaliron Velodrome in time for the 1896 Summer Olympics the stadium was used to hold cycling events, with the cycling track surrounding the perimeter of what would later be converted to a football pitch when the Greek side became permanent residents in 1925.

The stadium’s first renovation occurred in 1964 when an Athletics track replaced the velodrome, and the ground became one of the most important sporting venues in the country hosting the 1969 European Athletics Championship. Two years later the ground hosted the 1971 Cup Winners’ Cup Final between Spanish Giants Real Madrid and Chelsea with the English underdogs securing a 2-1 victory after extra time.

Now known as the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium after the Greek hero of the War of Independence who died near the area of Piraeus in Athens where the stadium is located, the ground was reconnected to its Olympic past when it was completely rebuilt in time for the 2004 Summer Olympics. The new ground cost a reported €60 million and was purpose built for football in 14 months, with Olympiacos’ 33,296 capacity ground used solely for Soccer matches during the Olympics.

A notable feature inside Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium is the tribute to the 21 supporters who sadly lost their lives in “Gate 7” after a match against AEK Athens in 1981. After the home side defeated their cross-town rivals 6 nil fans rushed out of the stadium to celebrate causing a crush near to the exit, with a partially closed door causing a fatal pile-up. The tribute consists of 21 black seats forming a number 7 near to the seating section where the tragedy happened.

The key is in getting to Pireas first and from there you either choose to walk the 2.5km distance by foot or hop on the green metro line which starts near the Port of Peiraias.

Athens International Airport is the busiest airport in Greece and 31st in Europe with over 25 million passengers served annually. It sits 29km east of Athens city centre, and around 37km from the port of Piraeus.

Hotels Near Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium

Normally Football Tripper recommends heading back to the city centre after the match for most stadiums, however in the case of The Karaiskakis it makes sense to head further south to the port area rather than return back to Athens.

Stunningly scenic, there are plenty of accommodation options such as the Delfini Hotel, The Savoy, and Lilia Hotel to name but three options.

Karaiskakis Stadium (Piraeus)

Karaiskakis Stadium

The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium is the home of Olympiacos, the most successful club in Greek football and named after Georgios Karaiskakis, a national hero who was killed close to the stadium during the 1821 Greek Revolution.

The original Karaiskakis Stadium was opened in 1896 and used at the first Summer Olympics that year as the Neo Phaliron Velodrome, hosting the cycling events. It was in the 1920s that football was first played in the stadium with Ethnikos Piraeus playing there since their formation in 1923 and Olympiacos playing there from their foundation in 1925. The stadium was renovated in the 1960s, with the cycling track replaced by an athletics track. The 1969 European Athletics Championship and 1971 Cup Winners’ Cup Final were subsequently held there, with Chelsea defeating Real Madrid 2-1 in a replay.

Olympiacos did move to the newly built Athens Olympic Stadium from 1984 to 1989, returning to the Karaiskakis Stadium briefly until 1997 before heading back to the Olympic stadium. Ethnikos Piraeus continued to use the stadium until 2000, however the ground fell into disrepair before being demolished in 2003 and rebuilt by Olympiacos, reopening within just 14 months ahead of the 2004 Summer Olympics – where a number of matches were played, including the Women’s Gold Medal match.

The Greek national team played the majority of their internationals at the Karaiskakis Stadium between 2004 and 2017, before returning to the Athens Olympic Stadium. Ethnikos Piraeus have an open invitation from Olympiacos to return to the stadium but as yet, have not opted to do so.

This is from an away supporter’s perspective. If you travel on the official coach transfer for your clubs supporters you will have a police escort from the city centre to the ground and a arrive at least 2 hours before kick off. You will disembark from your coach in a fenced compound and will not be allowed, by the police, to go anywhere other than into the stadium. After numerous searches and checks you will have to while away 2 hours with a small kiosk as the only, very limited refreshment outlet. No TV or other entertainment. Best to travel by metro to Piraeus, have a meal/drink and walk to the ground and in your own time. The game will be watched through netting which completely encloses the away end. There is only one way in and out of the entire away end from the “concourse” where the kiosk is. Only 5/6? urinals for the whole away section. An extremely poor, potentially dangerous and badly designed stadium with very basic facilities not up to the 21st century.

Ground Layout

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

What is the Karaiskakis Stadium like?

Officially named the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium after national hero and military commander Georgios Karaiskakis, the ground is the largest football-specific stadium in the whole of Greece, boasting a capacity of 33,334.

Like many modern stadia, the ground features a bowl-like design, giving the facility a sense of style as more and more clubs choose to move away from the more traditional four-stand approach.

Arguably the most unique and iconic aspect of the ground is its famous roof, which is characterised by an astonishing grid-like effect, accented by several red metal structures.

It has been awarded with four-star status by UEFA, meaning that it could one day be the hosting venue of a Europa League final.

Those four stars are well-deserved too, with features such as a shopping mall and club museum supporting the aforementioned roof design.

Rather impressively, due to the innovative design of the site, the ground has the ability to completely empty its tribunes within the space of seven minutes – and we all know just how long this can take in other stadiums.

Three sides of the stadium consist of single-tiered stands, including the North stand, which is often where the majority of the club’s most passionate fans reside. You will also find the number seven etched into the seats in this section in memory of the tragic Karaiskakis Stadium Disaster.

The West stand features 40 VIP lounges and suites that have a capacity of 472 and is the main section of the ground.

Without a doubt, the Karaiskakis Stadium is a state-of-the-art facility, and is even the chosen home of the Greek national team, beating out rival grounds such as the Athens Olympic Stadium.

What is the Karaiskakis Stadium like for away fans?

In the vast majority of cases, travelling supporters will be sat in blocks 26 and 27 of the ground, both of which are located within the south-west corner of the site.

Conveniently, the entrance to this section of the stadium is located nearby the Faliro Metro Station, which is where most away fans will arrive.

There are, of course, anomalies, but most of the time, the ground and the city of Piraeus in which it is located are hostile and is not safe for away supporters so remain vigilant at all times.

Pubs for away fans

The city of Piraeus is not a welcoming city to away fans, particularly on matchday. In fact, it has a reputation in recent years of violent home supporters, and therefore, the club have made coach travel, to and from the stadium, mandatory.

As such, you will spend the majority of your time in the capital city of Athens, and it is here that you should look to find pubs for some pre-game drinks.

Athens is far more welcoming and most pubs and bars will be good options, but some standouts include the Athens Sports Bar and the James Joyce Pub.

Latest developments at the Karaiskakis Stadium

A groundbreaking development at the ground was completed very recently, with the club inaugurating their brand new ‘American Corner’ of the site.

It was an initiative put forward by the US Embassy and features easy access to the Internet for cultural and educational events which will be hosted in the facility.

The main goal of the partnership between the city of Piraeus and the Embassy is an increase in cultural contribution to society.

It was officially unveiled via a friendly match between Olympiacos veterans and celebrities of both Greek and American citizenship.

Ground history

Originally constructed for the 1896 Athens Olympic Games, work on the site began in 1895 and lasted approximately one year.

Renovations have been few and far between at the stadium, with the first set of improvements occurring in 1964, although these were not all that significant.

Then, in 2004, the ground was completely rebuilt into a sleek, modern all-seater competition ahead of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

Not only was the site demolished and built from the foundations once more, but it was also rotated and now faces a completely different direction from what it once did.

Despite the Herculean overhaul, these improvements took just 14 months to be completed.

Olympiacos’ original lease on the facility ended in 1998, but, in 2003, that was renewed, this time granting the club access to the stadium on a 49-year deal, ending in 2052.

It is now the largest football-specific stadium in the whole of Greece and has set several records to further etch its name into the history books of the sport.

It hosted the first-ever European football final in the country – a Cup Winners’ Cup encounter between juggernauts Real Madrid and Chelsea.

However, tragedy has also struck the ground, in the form of an incident known as the Karaiskakis Stadium Disaster.

The accident occurred after fans of Olympiacos rushed out of the stadium via Gate 7 to celebrate a 6-0 victory over AEK Athens, and led to the deaths of 21 fans. It is the worst football-related disaster in the history of the country.

Given that Olympiacos have made coach travel to and from the Karaiskakis Stadium mandatory in European fixtures, most of which depart from Athens, it is the capital city of Greece that you will likely want to head to.

Travel by plane

Easily the best option, travelling by plane is the quickest and most straightforward method available to you. Greece is a very popular tourist destination for UK citizens and as such, the vast majority of airports will fly to Athens.

Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos, is your best bet in this regard, from which you will want to follow your club’s outlined coach travel plans to ensure safe arrival at the ground.

By public transport

While the plane is likely to be your best bet, you also have the option of travelling by public transport to Athens. This, however, will require a 2-day journey, with plenty of changes between services such as the Eurostar and local buses in the several countries which you will pass through.

In truth, travelling by plane is far easier, likely cheaper and remains our recommended option if making the trip to the Karaiskakis Stadium.

Ticket prices at Karaiskakis Stadium

Ticket prices of course vary depending on a variety of factors, including the competition which Olympiacos are playing and who they are competing against.

However, as a general rule of thumb, you can expect to pay approximately €40 for an adult ticket, while a child’s ticket will likely be close to €10.

If, however, they are playing against European giants in the Champions League, or their fierce rivals Panathinaikos , then these prices can be far higher. It is always best to check the club’s official website to find exact prices.

Local rivals

Olympiacos’ local rivals are fellow Athens-based side Panathinaikos .

These two clubs are the two most successful in the history of Greek football, and given their extreme proximity, often produce fierce encounters.

In fact, as recently as 2019 a match between the pair had to be abandoned due to fans clashing ahead of kick-off.

Disabled facilities

In terms of accessible seats for disabled supporters, there are a total of 50 provided in the ground, all of which are located within the West Stand.

Olympiacos also provide an accessible entrance to the stadium itself, with wheelchair users guided towards a separate gate which features a slope rather than steps.

This slope ends at the wheelchair-accessible viewing area and is also located near accessible toilets.

Record and average attendance

Karaiskakis Stadium’s record attendance was set all the way back in 1969, against Olympiacos’ rivals AEK Athens, when a crowd of 45,445 was in attendance for the derby game on April 7.

Despite having the largest football-specific stadium in the country, Olympiacos’ average attendance of 23, 430 is only the second-highest, narrowly losing out to AEK Athens who boast a respective figure of 25,000.

Georgios Karaiskakis: Olympiacos, Greece National Team

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium is often referred to simply as The Karaiskakis Stadium. It is named after a hero of the Greek War of Independence, Field Marshal Georgios Karaiskakis. A sports venue was originally built on the spot where the current ground stands in time for the 1896 Summer Olympics. Back then it was a velodrome and wasn’t used for football until Olympiacos moved into it after the club was first formed in 1925. It underwent significant renovation in the middle of the 1960s but was rebuilt entirely in 2004 ahead of that year’s Summer Olympics.

The history of the stadium is a little muddled. Technically it opened in 2004 as that was when it was rebuilt, however a stadium of the same name has hosted football matches for decades before then. When the first match was played there and what the record attendance is will therefore depend entirely on the strictness of your definitions. Since it re-opened it has been the permanent home of a Greece national side that had previously moved from one location to another with wild abandon. As this is a guide for a stadium that hosts two teams we’ll tell you relevant information about both and will always put Olympiacos first, should you wish to skip to the bit you’re interested in.

Georgios Karaiskakis Seating Plan and Where to Sit

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

Karaiskakis Stadium is laid out in a bowl style, with rows of seating continuing all the way around the ground. It is essentially one-tiered with the exception of The West Stand that has a row of executive boxes behind the seats.

  • The North Stand – Behind the Northern most goal, this stand is the place you’ll find Olympiacos’ noisiest supporters. There is a number ‘7’ etched into the seats as a dedication to the supporters that lost their lives in the Gate 7 tragedy of 1981.
  • The South Stand – This is, somewhat predictably, at the opposite end of the ground to The North Stand. Away fans tend to be housed in the Western corner of this section.
  • The West Stand – Dominated by executive boxes, this is the main stand of the stadium. As well as the changing rooms and dugouts, this is also where the players’ tunnel is located.
  • The East Stand – The largest section of seating in the entire Karaiskakis Stadium stretches along the edge of the pitch, marked out by the ‘Olympiacos FC’ that you can see made up of white seats in amongst the red ones.

Greece Ticket Prices

Ticket prices for national team games are normally decided by the country’s Football Association. In this instance that is the Hellenic Football Federation. If the competition that the match you’re hoping to see is relevant to comes under the jurisdiction of UEFA or FIFA then you might even find that they’re in charge of pricing. In short, we have no idea how much tickets will cost to see the Greece national side play.

How To Get Greece Tickets

Just as the various organisation that sort out the football matches are in charge of ticket pricing, so they do the distribution of said tickets. Have a look on the HFF’s website or those of UEFA or FIFA.

Where to Buy

  • Ticket Compare

Olympiacos Ticket Prices

The volatile nature of the Greek economy means that prices for tickets to see Olympiacos play can change with short notice. As with most teams around the world you’ll find that you’ll pay different amounts depending on whether you’d like sit in the posh seats or are happy with just basic ones. Your age will also alter things. If you’re an adult happy to sit in a run-of-the-mill seat then you’ll probably pay somewhere between €10 and €40 for your ticket.

How To Get Olympiacos Tickets

There is a ticket office at the stadium itself from where you can buy match tickets. Greek citizens need to have a Fan Card in order to do so, with tourists normally required to show their passport instead. Obviously one of the best ways of getting tickets is online. You can also phone the club if your Greek is half-decent. There are automated machines around the ground for your use for collecting tickets that you’ve reserved online or by phone.

Getting To Georgios Karaiskakis

Piraeus is near to the Greek capital, Athens. Here’s a quick look at your best travel options:

Train – To be honest, you can’t really get the train to either Piraeus or Athens from England with any degree of ease. Athens Train Station itself is about six miles from the ground. Once there you’ll be able to get an overground to Piraeus, with Poplar being the most convenient stop to the ground. The Metro is also an option and Faliro on the Green Line is the best stop.

Bus – Bus numbers 040, 101, 130 and the X95 all stop in reasonably proximity of the stadium.

Car – Driving in Greece can be a bit of a laugh, as long as you find terrifying car journeys funny. The stadium is near to the city’s port area, not far from the E75 and the 56.

By Air – Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is about forty miles from Piraeus, so that’s probably the best place to fly into.

Taxi – A taxi from the centre of the city out to the stadium will take around fifteen minutes to complete its journey and should cost the same number of Euros.

Parking Near Georgios Karaiskakis

There are two decent sized car parks near to the ground for you to try to park in. You’re unlikely to struggle for a space as there’s room for 2,500 cars and you’ll be pleased to know it’s free to park there.

Georgios Karaiskakis Hotels

If you want to stay in a place full of energy and excitement then obviously Athens isn’t too far away. Piraeus isn’t exactly a boring old dust town, though, so here are some hotel options for you:

Pubs and bars near georgios karaiskakis.

The Greeks know how to have a good time so you’re in for a treat if you head out for a drink or a bite to eat before the game. Here are some of our favourite venues:

O'Connell's Irish Pub

Amsterdam bar, oinompýrama.

The views from pretty much every seat in the ground are spot on. You’ll also come across all of the usual amenities when your in the concourses, too. Plenty of places to buy a drink and grab a bite to eat.

Hospitality

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

There are forty VIP suites at Karaiskakis Stadium, with two of them able to hold up twenty people each. The rest can hold between ten and eighteen and there’s also the Presidential Suite, if you really want to splash out. The stadium now contains a restaurant known as Vammos, should you wish to have a bite to eat in posh surroundings that offer a cracking new of the pitch.

Private Hire

It’s unusual for a top-class venue such as this not to offer people the option to host a private event here if that sort of thing is on your radar. The club can guide you through exactly what they can and can’t offer, but there is no information displayed on the website.

Stadium Tours & Museum

At the time of writing the club doesn’t offer stadium tours. If anything changes on that front then we’ll update this section. If you can read this, though, then nothing’s changed, because if it had, we would have updated it.

One thing we don’t need to update is the information about the museum. It opened on the 14th of May 2006 and contains a huge amount of exciting and interesting club memorabilia. As well as having a look around the place you can also go to seminars and lectures that are held at the museum on a regular basis. It’s closed on Mondays and it shuts half an hour before kick-off on match days. If you want to go from Tuesday to Thursday then it’s open from 10am until 6pm, whilst that changes to 10am to 10pm on Fridays and from 11am until 3pm on non-match day weekends.

About Greece

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

Known as ‘the pirate ship’ for reasons that aren’t exactly all that clear, the Greece national team played football for the first time at the Intercalated Games in Athens in 1906. At the end of the First World War Paris hosted the Inter-Allied Games, which the Greeks played in. They also entered a team into the 1920 Summer Olympics, held in Antwerp. In spite of all of that, the country’s first appearance at a major tournament didn’t occur until they reached the group stages of UEFA’s 1980 European Championships, hosted by Italy.

Greece didn’t get to play in a FIFA World Cup tournament until 1994 when they qualified for the competition that was to be held in America. The country’s greatest triumph on the international stage occurred exactly ten years later when they emerged from the 2004 European Championships as winners. The fact that they defeated the hosts Portugal in the final made it all the sweeter for them and also increased the shock value for everyone else. To date they have struggled to repeat that achievement, though they have at least qualified for most major tournaments since they were crowned champions of Europe.

About Olympiacos

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

If you wanted to give the side its full name then you’d have to call it Olympiacos Club of Fans of Piraeus. You probably don’t, though, so Olympiacos will work fine. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that club takes its name from the Olympics that was born in Athens. Indeed, the profile of an Olympic athlete still adorns the team’s badge to this day. The club claims to be the most popular Greek side in the world, with more than three million fans in the country itself and many more living elsewhere.

Perhaps their popularity has something to do with how successful they have been over the years. When it comes to trophies, Olympiacos is the best Greek team of all time. They have picked up 46 top-flight titles and counting, 28 Greek Cups and 4 Greek Super Cups. That includes eighteen doubles of the league and Greek Cup. If you’re a fan of quirky facts then you’ll be interested to know that Olympiacos have won more titles than the rest of the Greek teams combined.

Georgios Karaiskakis History

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

In 1896 the Summer Olympics were held in Greece and needed a venue for the cycling events. That was when the Neo Phaliron Velodrome opened its doors for the first time, witnessing a Frenchman by the name of Paul Masson taking all three Gold medals in the discipline. The velodrome later became known as The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, with Olympiacos moving into the ground after the club was formed in 1925.

One of the most important moments in the venue’s history came on the 8th of February 1981. Olympiacos played their fierce rivals AEK Athens and absolutely trounced them, winning the match 6-0. Fans attempted to rush outside to celebrate the result but a partially closed exit door delayed them. Supporters at the front fell down the last few steps and those behind kept coming, unaware they were trampling them. Nineteen fans died inside the stadium and two more succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Future Developments

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

The stadium was completely rebuilt in 2004. Consequently there are no major plans to make changes to it any time soon.

Karaiskaki Stadium

With a history spanning three centuries, the Georgios Karaiskakis football stadium in Neon Faliron is a modern structure, serving the needs of the Greek National Team and football clubs from Piraeus. After the railway donated the land in 1895, a velodrome was constructed for the Athens Olympic Games of 1896 (it was known as the Velodrome until the mid-20th century).

Before the war, Piraeus football teams such as Olympiakos and Ethnikos used the Velodrome as a home field. It was renamed Karaiskaki Stadium after Georgios Karaiskakis, supreme commander of the Revolution of 1821, who fell in the battle of Faliron in 1827.

In 1964 the stadium was renovated, and could then host larger events like the Pan European Games of 1969 and the Europa League finals.

The stadium was completely rebuilt by the Olympiakos football club in 2004 for the Athens Olympic Games.

Karaiskaki – stadium description

Located in Piraeus, in the Athens urban area, the Karaiskakis Stadium was originally built in time for the 1st modern Summer Olympics in 1896 in Athens, as an outdoor Velodrome. Minor Renovations took place during the 1960’s. Current tenants Olympiacos, only moved into the stadium in 1925 until 1984, then from 1989 until 1997, then moved back in after complete reconstruction from 2004-present.

The original stadium also suffered from the Gate 7 tragedy on 8th of February, 1981, an incident widely known as the Karaiskaki Stadium disaster. In memory of this, at the section of Gate 7, twenty one seats are coloured black instead of red, shaping the number 7.

The rebuilt stadium re-opened in 2004, in time to host some of the Football competitions during the 2004 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. With an all seated capacity of 33,296, the stadium has been handed a status of 5 stars by UEFA.

Included in the reconstruction, are single tiered stands on three sides of the Stadium, with one side having 40 VIP lounges and suites, that can hold up to 472 people, a press conference hall that can hold up to 130 seats, 200 seats for press and media, a shopping centre with restaurants, cafes, retail and clothing stores, as well as a gym and a museum dedicated to the history of Olympiacos.

The stadium was rotated, facing a different direction from the original stadium, as well as a completely new roof, supported by 14 cantilever supports. The stadium was built in a record time of 14 months. Olympiacos has leased the stadium until 2052, The Greece National Football Team plays most of its home games here, instead of the much bigger Athens Olympic Stadium.

Georgios Karaiskákis Stadium

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

Olympiacos is Greece’s most loved and most hated club. They’ve won trophy after trophy, especially in this century. They play their home games in the Georgios Karaiskákis Stadium, which is a historical ground in Piraeus surrounded by tourist hotspots.

Olympiacos Piraeus

If you ask the ultras of Olympiacos, they would put the club before their family. Since the turn of the century, Olympiacos has won 18 championship titles and has dominated Greek football. The club is owned by a controversial multimillionaire, Evangelos Marinakis (also the owner of Nottingham Forest), who has been accused of match-fixing twice and of involvement in drug trafficking. Luckily for him and the club, he’s been cleared of all charges. But it has not made the reputation of the already much-hated Olympiacos any better.

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

The Georgios Karaiskákis Stadium is a modern stadium, but one that is made for football. It’s been Olympiacos’ home ground since 1895, but the stadium has been completely refurbished multiple times. The last time it was rebuilt was in 2004 for the Olympic Games.

From the outside, it’s not a particularly special stadium, but the red steel fits the surrounding harbour very well. It’s, however, more special from the inside. The fans are notorious for the fiery and intimidating atmosphere they create with fireworks, pyros, tifosi and loud noise. For many players, the Georgios Karaiskákis Stadium is the most intimidating ground they’ve ever played in. Even Zlatan Ibrahimovic was impressed when he played against them with Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

Inside the stadium, you’ll also find the Olympiacos Museum, filled with trophies from not only the football club but from all the sports associations of Olympiacos. Besides that, there’s also a shopping mall with restaurants, cafés, retail stores and a gym.

The Gate 7 Tragedy

The 8 th of February 1981, it was the darkest day in Greek football. 21 people died after fans rushed out of the stadium to celebrate Olympiacos’ 6-0 win against local rivals AEK Athens. Fans fell from the stairs after they lost their balance and were stepped on by a sea of unsuspecting fans. The main cause is said to have been a door that was partially closed.

Every year there’s a memorial service held on the 8 th of February. On the stand of Gate 7, where the tragedy occurred, some seats have been painted black instead of red, which forms the letter ‘7’. On the east side of the stadium, you will find a monument with the names of the 21 fans who died.

The Rockin Bulldog

The Rockin Bulldog is the most famous Olympiacos bar. Before and after home matches, the bar will be filled with Olympiacos fans. The walls are filled with memorabilia of the club. And the best thing: It’s right next to the Georgios Karaiskákis Stadium.

Peace and Friendship Stadium

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

In the surrounding area, you will find a lot of stadiums that were used during the Olympic Games of 2004, including the Peace and Friendship Stadium, which is only a couple of hundred metres from the stadium of Olympiacos. The arena, located next to a marina, is also the home ground of Olympiacos’ successful basketball team. A bit further along the coastline (in the eastern direction) you will find more stadiums of the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex, including an abandoned beach volleyball stadium, a football pitch and the Faliro Sports Pavilion Arena.

Mikrolimano and the coastal region

If you follow the opposite direction of the coast, you will end up in Mikrolimano, a popular tourist area filled with nice restaurants and bars. It’s a perfect place to have a drink or eat a bite before or after a match of Olympiacos. On the adjacent Votsolokia beach, you will find a swimming pool, outdoor cinema, basketball court, tennis courts and two football pitches. A bit further, on the Alexandras Square, lies Olympiacos’ headquarters.

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

Neapolis Nikaia Municipal Stadium

In the nearby suburb of Nikaia, you will find the Neapolis Nikaia Municipal Stadium, simply known as the Neapoli Stadium. From the inside, it’s a beautiful stadium with its white stands, massive floodlights and surrounding apartment blocks that peek above the stands. You can’t see much on the outside of the stadium, except for one graffiti-covered wall. So it’s recommended to watch a match of the home team Ionikos FC, who currently plays in Greece’s top flight.

Massive rivalries

Because only one team can qualify for the UEFA Champions League playoffs, there is a massive rivalry between all the top clubs in Greece. Not only do the fans expect a championship each year, but so does the board given the financial benefit of playing Champions League football.

Olympiacos has been winning the Champions League spot almost every season but does have big rivalries with Panathinaikos (also known as the derby between eternal enemies), AEK Athens and PAOK: Greece’s four biggest clubs. Traditionally, Olympiacos also has a local derby Ethinikos Piraeus, but they have been absent from Greek’s top flight for many years.

georgios karaiskakis football stadium tour

Tips for your safety

The Greeks have a lot of passion, hate and love for football. Unfortunately, this has also occasionally resulted in fan violence. The league is no foreigner to being temporarily halted due to the violence. In efforts to decrease the risk, away fans are not able to enter the stadiums of the top clubs of PAOK, AEK Athens, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. The fans of the big clubs in Athens also don’t tend to leave their neighbourhood for their safety. That’s why it is advised not to wear any football shirts in Greece.

You need an AMKA, basically a Greek social security number, to buy football tickets in Greece. However, it is possible to order tickets through Olympiacos’ website as a foreigner. The club redirects you to Ticketmaster, where you can order your ticket and get information on what to fill in on the AMKA.

Since the economic crisis, it has become a rarity for stadiums in Greece to sell out, which means that even on match days you can usually still buy a ticket at the ticket office of the Georgios Karaiskákis Stadium. Especially for the smaller games. Be aware that you do need your passport.

How to get there

The stadium of Olympiacos is easily accessible by public transport. Next to the stadium, you will find the metro station Neo Faliro, which can be reached by M1 (the green line), and the tram station from the Peace and Friendship Stadium which has many stations along the coastline.
