When it left the U.S. banking market in 2021, HSBC also sold off some credit card products to First Bank & Trust. But there are two HSBC credit cards available to U.S. consumers that offer rewards and other benefits. However, you must have an existing relationship with HSBC to be eligible for either of these cards. Also, one of the cards has a high annual fee , which is something to consider.

Here are five things to know about the HSBC credit cards.

1. There are two HSBC credit cards

HSBC offers these card options:

The HSBC Premier credit card: $95 annual fee.

The HSBC Elite credit card: $495 annual fee.

2. The qualification requirements are strict

You must have an existing U.S. HSBC Premier checking account to qualify for these cards. And the requirements to maintain this account without a fee are pretty steep.

You need at least one of these:

At least $100,000 in total deposits, investments or both. 

At least $5,000 in direct deposits per month.

An HSBC U.S. residential mortgage loan.

If you don’t meet these requirements, you can still have an HSBC Premier checking account, but you’ll owe a $50 monthly maintenance fee.

3. Both cards earn rewards

The HSBC Premier credit card and HSBC Elite credit card earn generous sign-up bonuses, as well as rewards on ongoing spending.

Here’s how they compare:

HSBC’s top executives have discussed a plan to merge its commercial and investment banking units, bringing together two of its three divisions in what would be a significant move by new chief executive Georges Elhedery to cut costs. 

Under the proposal, the bank would combine its commercial banking business, which accounted for 35 per cent of its revenue last year, with its global banking and markets unit, which works for larger clients and made up 24 per cent of revenue according to the bank’s most recent annual report. 

A merger between the two units would help Elhedery with his plans to slim down the bank and cut out some of its management layers, said one person familiar with the plans.

Elhedery also plans to focus on increasing earnings from fee-based businesses such as asset and wealth management to counteract declining net interest income.

While discussions have taken place, there is no certainty that the plan will be implemented, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

A merger of the two units would come after HSBC said last month that Barry O’Byrne, the global head of its commercial banking business, would move to run its wealth and personal banking unit. He will replace Nuno Matos, who is leaving and had been a leading contender for the chief executive job that Elhedery won this year. 

The bank did not name O’Byrne’s successor at the commercial bank last month, saying it would be announced “in due course”. Jo Miyake will run the commercial bank on an interim basis. The bank declined to comment. Bloomberg News first reported the discussions. 

Cutting costs is a top priority for Elhedery, who took the helm of the bank this month. The bank’s employee numbers have remained high despite a pledge by former chief executive Noel Quinn that he would get it down to 200,000 full time jobs by the end of last year. 

HSBC reported expenses of $8.1bn in the second quarter, up 3 per cent from a year earlier, which it said was partly due to higher technology costs and inflation.  

The commercial banking and global banking and markets businesses both include trade finance, payments solutions and credit and lending, though the latter unit serves larger customers. 

Quinn, who departed as chief executive this year, had spent much of his career in HSBC’s commercial banking business.

Photographers say Harris campaign has reduced their access

In a letter, the White House News Photographers Association claims the vice president’s campaign hasn’t made room for the same number of photographers who traveled with the president.

The White House News Photographers Association says Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign has cut the number of journalists who travel with the Democratic nominee from 13 to nine — an “unprecedented reduction in access,” according to a letter addressed to half a dozen Harris staffers and the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association. The letter says that the reduction disproportionately affected news photographers, whose ranks in the travel pool fell from four to one.

The Aug. 29 letter, sent to Harris campaign staffers and the vice president’s office, acknowledges that the campaign says it needed the seats for security personnel, but it reflects broader frustration from news organizations about limited access to Harris, who has had few moments of unscripted public exposure since becoming the nominee. The letter also points to the photographers association’s simmering dissatisfaction with the correspondents association, whose mission is to ensure a free and robust coverage of the presidency.

“It’s unfortunate that the still photographers are the most affected by the negotiations that have happened with the White House Correspondents’ Association and the vice president’s office,” said Doug Mills, a longtime Washington photographer who has covered presidencies and campaigns for major news outlets and served as a member of the correspondents association’s board.

“Each reporter writes a different story. Each photographer has their own eye,” Mills said. “This election is too historic to be covered by one still photographer on Harris’s plane.”

The letter, sent by the photographers association president, Jessica Koscielniak, and signed by six major news organizations — the Associated Press, AFP, the New York Times, Getty, Reuters and The Washington Post — calls on the campaign to reconsider the restrictions or otherwise make additional arrangements for the photographers. And if that’s not possible, the letter continued, it asked the correspondents association to reallocate travel seats to allow for more photographers to travel with the campaign.

“While we understand the reduction is due to security, further accommodations are required to maintain a fair and free press,” the letter says, adding that given the deluge of variously trustworthy information available, voters “rely on independent visual journalism for factual representation” of the campaigns.

In a response letter sent Wednesday night, which was first reported by Axios, the Harris campaign said the pool that traveled with the vice president on Air Force Two had always been nine, not 13. (Thirteen journalists travel with President Joe Biden on Air Force One, but the vice president’s plane is smaller. At dispute is whether the correspondents’ association should have negotiated the same number of seats on the vice president’s plane.)

Still, the campaign said it had worked in good faith with the correspondents’ association to ensure a supplemental pool always has the opportunity to travel with the Harris campaign. It also said the campaign had looked into adding additional seats to Harris’s plane and explored procuring an additional “chaser” plane to accommodate journalists, but that both solutions were not viable because of limited resources. (When reached by The Post, the campaign declined to answer questions on the record.)

But there is still sentiment that the WHCA — which has overlapping membership with the WHNPA — didn’t advocate strongly enough for photographers.

“If the roles were reversed here and the reporters were limited in their numbers the way the still photographers are, it would not be accepted,” Mills said.

Eugene Daniels, who took the helm of the WHCA this year, said the association “has and will always endeavor for more and better press access for all of our members” and that it has worked with the vice president’s team to expand the nine-seat allotment on the plane.

“We’ve also asked the Harris staff about a possible secondary plane and even changing the configuration of Air Force Two to allow for the three still photographers to be on the plane for every trip. All of those have been explored by the VP’s team. Our aim is for every component of the press corps to be represented to the greatest extent, so that we can provide the broadest possible coverage for the American people,” Daniels said. “That advocacy will continue.”

This isn’t the first time news photographers have bumped up against the access restrictions to the vice president. In July, the six news organizations that signed the recent letter considered boycotting photo coverage of Harris’s Oval Office meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to protest the vice president’s office’s decision to restrict photo coverage of the event. In the end, the photographers and the WHCA reached a compromise with the vice president’s office on the number of photographers allowed to cover the meeting and a boycott was avoided.

But frustrations remain.

“News photographers were just kind of blindsided by this whole decision and this new policy moving forward,” said a longtime Washington photojournalist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on behalf of their news organization, which is one of the six newsrooms that signed the letter.

A boycott, the photographer said, is a last resort.

“You want to make sure that you advocate for your part of the journalistic profession as strongly as you can, but if you boycotted, you’re going from some coverage to no coverage. And the question is, at that point, are you fulfilling your journalistic responsibilities,” the photographer said. “We still need pictures right of the vice president campaigning for the presidency.”

Event Summary

The Haight Ashbury Street Fair is an annual event featuring arts and crafts, food vendors, three musical stages and more. The event takes place Sunday, September 15, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Haight Street between Masonic and Stanyan, with street closures from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Muni will reroute around the event area.

Street Closures

Haight Street between Masonic Avenue and Stanyan Street will be closed, along with the following cross streets between Page and Waller :

These street closures will begin a 6 a.m. and last until 8 p.m.

Muni Service Changes

Muni will reroute the 7 Haight/Noriega , 33 Ashbury/18th Street , 37 Corbett , 43 Masonic and the early-morning N Judah Bus  around the event area. The reroutes will begin with the start of each route's regular service hours last until streets reopen at approximately 8 p.m.

HSBC ANA Travel Fair 2024 - Lokasi dan Cashbacknya

Bulan februari adalah bulannya Travel Fair di Indonesia!

Ya kali ini yang hadir duluan adalah travel fair yang diadakan oleh HSBC Indonesia Bank, bekerja sama dengan maskapai penerbangan ANA. Jadi sajian utamanya tentu adalah tiket pesawat ke Jepang .

Lokasi Travel Fair

Untuk Jakarta, travel fair diadakan tanggal 14-18 Februari 2024, bertempat di Laguna Atrium, Mall Central Park, Jakarta Barat.

Bagi nasabah terundang, biasanya nasabah Premier, ada presale di kantor HSBC tanggal 13 Februari 2024.

Ini juga berlaku untuk kota lain seperti Denpasar Bali, Medan, Palembang, Anda bisa tinggal datang ke kantor travel Dwidaya Tour.

Cashback Travel Fair

Nah, mungkin agak kurang nendang kali ini adalah harga finalnya, dibandingkan travel fair setengah tahun lalu.

Jika Anda mengikuti harga tiket pesawat ANA, pasti tahu tiket direct ke Jepang pakai ANA adalah yang paling yahud alias mahal. Tarifnya saat travel fair memang turun (dari 13-14jt pp economy jadi sekitar 9-10juta pp).

Sedangkan cashback yang diberikan jika kita memiliki kartu HSBC adalah sbb.

Ada bonus tambahan berupa tas American Tourister dan tas Uniqlo, limited per customer, ini sepertinya hanya di Jakarta, dan hanya di tanggal 14 Februari 2024.

20X Multiplier

Nah ini yang sepertinya menarik. Jadi jika kita beli tiket selama travel fair ini, lalu melakukan registrasi secara online. Selanjutnya transaksi offline selama di luar negeri (Jepang) menggunakan HSBC Premier Mastercard akan mendapatkan bonus multiplier poin, sehingga untuk transaksi senilai 1,500 rupiah yang biasa cuma dapat 3-5 poin kali ini bisa 20 poin.

Pesawat direct ke Jepang dari Jakarta memang yang terbaik adalah ANA dan Japan Airlines. Tentu karena Jepang menjadi destinasi liburan paling hits belakangan ini membuat tiket pesawat ke sana menjadi high demand.

Osaka gears up for the 2025 World Expo with memories of hosting a half-century ago

O SAKA, Japan (AP) — Visitors to Tokyo and Kyoto might not realize it, but Osaka — one of Japan’s biggest and oldest cities, known more as a business hub than a tourist destination -- is gearing up to host next year’s World Exposition.

The city has been plastered with the Expo’s red-and-blue “Myaku-Myaku” mascot for months and is abuzz with preparations. For many here, the excitement is mixed with nostalgia for the last World Expo hosted by Japan, back in 1970.

There are doubters, especially outside Osaka. Construction costs are turning out to be exponentially higher than expected. Preparations have been marred by political and business infighting. And many Japanese, jaded after Tokyo’s difficult experience hosting the Olympics during the COVID pandemic, question whether the idea of a World Expo is still relevant.

But in Osaka, many older residents say such events are more necessary than ever.

Many retain vivid memories of the 1970 Expo. They remember schoolchildren attending multiple times, particularly those from the Osaka area. There were long lines to see the moon rocks on view at the U.S. pavilion; prototypes of electric cars; displays featuring the first ethernet cables (LAN); and the introduction of Western foods like yogurt and baguettes.

It was a time when traveling abroad was still a dream for most, and Expo ’70 was a rare chance for ordinary Japanese to hear live performances by bands from around the world, and visit a huge array of pavilions representing various nations and interests.

Mostly, though, the enduring impact was the chance for personal interactions with international pavilions and visitors.

“My experience as an interpreter at World Expo ’70 was transformative,” says Takahiro Shinyo, who went on to join the Japanese foreign service, serve as a Japanese ambassador to Germany, and is now a visiting professor at Kwansei Gakuin University, just outside Osaka.

“It opened my eyes to the power of international cooperation and the potential of human ingenuity,” he says.

And while a lot has changed since 1970, he says World Expos remain just as relevant today.

“The value of direct interpersonal contact that World Expos facilitate cannot be replicated online,” he says. “The face-to-face interactions, the exchange of ideas, and the shared experiences that take place at these events contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our global community.”

As in 1970, this World Expo is being staged in Osaka just a few years after the Olympics were held in Tokyo. But while the 1964 Olympics were an enormously successful and popular event at the time, the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, held during the pandemic, were considered a disappointment to many Japanese.

World Expos happen every five years, and last up to six months. The most recent, in 2020, was in Dubai.

The upcoming Expo in Osaka is scheduled for April 13-Oct. 13, 2025, with the theme “Designing the Future of Our Lives.” Organizers anticipate 28.2 million visitors, over 3 million of them from other countries. Nearly 5 million tickets have already been sold.

The Expo will be held on an island built off the coast of western Osaka using the same technology as at nearby Kansai International Airport, which floats in Osaka Bay. The fair promises multiple prototypes of flying cars, and spokeswoman Sachiko Yoshimura said organizers hope visitors could even take a flying car from the airport to the Expo.

That said, organizers say their emphasis is not on cutting-edge technology as much as international cooperation.

“This Expo is not just a showcase of industry. It’s about having all the nations come together and unite as one,” said Yoshimura, in a glassed-in office near the top of a skyscraper overlooking the site of the upcoming event.

Although the grounds of World Expo 2025 have begun to open up for limited tours of the construction site, the general public can get a sense of the impact of a World Exposition in Osaka by visiting ExpoCity, the site of the 1970 World Expo. It features an immersive Expo ’70 Pavilion, including the still-intact Steel Pavilion, and galleries of Expo '70 memorabilia like uniforms worn by World Expo “hostesses.”

Visitors to ExpoCity can climb inside the nearby “Taiyo no To” (Tower of the Sun) sculpture, a symbol of Expo '70 and designed by Japanese artist Taro Okamoto. There is also a playground, a lake with paddle boats and, nearby, “Expo Restaurant,” which sells what are billed as the same style meals served at that fair.

Getting there: ExpoCity is a short monorail ride from Itami Airport, in Osaka. Tickets to the 2025 World Exposition range in price from 4,000 yen (about $25) to 6700 yen (about $42), depending on entry days, and can be purchased online at expo2025.or.jp .
