Expedition Cruises to Explore Svalbard During the Summer Months

Travelling in groups of 12 led by an expedition leader and expert guide means more time exploring ashore. There’s plenty of space on the Zodiac landing crafts, and you can experience the unique Arctic silence away from crowds. It’s one of the best places in the world to see polar bears in the wild and we’re frequently lucky enough to encounter walruses, Arctic foxes, and humpback whales too. You’ll also get to follow in the footsteps of great explorers, visit settlements, and grab a drink in one of the most northerly bars in the world.

Secret Atlas cruises to Svalbard take place between April and September, the early part of the season is the chance to see the archipelago emerge from the long winter, from mid-May, the 24-hr daylight arrives with more opportunities for wildlife watching, and the sea-ice open ups which makes it possible to reach more pats of the archipelago. But every month of the season offers a different experience.

All our cruises depart from Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Svalbard. There are daily flights to Longyearbyen from Oslo on Tromso, which take around three hours.

Tromso in Northern Norway

small ship cruises of norway

Tromso is city in northern Norway surrounded by Arctic wilderness, where locals and visitors can hike up mountains like Tromsdalstinden. It’s perfect for a city getaway with a sense of adventure, particularly in the winter months as its latitude of 70° north and relatively low levels of light pollution make it one of the best places in the world to witness the wonder of the aurora borealis, aka the northern lights.

As well as snowy mountains, you don’t have to travel far out of the city to see more stunning nature including beautiful fjords like crisp-blue waters of Ullsfjord where you’ll also find glaciers and unspoilt wilderness. Winter in Tromso is also a good time or whale watching, when the orcas (killer whales), and humpback whales in the fjords.

Northern Lights and Whale Watching Cruises During the Winter Months

Our winter Norway cruise season takes visitors to Tromso, in the north. The city of Tromso is one of the best places in the world to witness the northern lights. It sits in an area known as the auroral oval and has a latitude of almost 70° north, and there’s also very little light pollution. Of course, we can’t guarantee sightings, but the probability of witnessing the aurora borealis aka northern lights is high on any given night.

The fjords surrounding Tromso offer a perfect place to witness the northern lights as there is little to no light pollution.

whale watching in norway

The fjords surrounding Tromso offer frequent whale and Orca sightings during the winter months.

By day, our expedition micro-cruise will head north of the city, through beautiful fjords in search of orcas (killer whales). The waters surrounding Tromso are home to an abundance of orcas, and they spent 40 per cent of their time travelling, so there’s a good chance we’ll spot some. Smaller ships are less disruptive to them too, as they’re quieter than larger ships. We following strict rules laid out by The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), Soto make sure our Norway cruises don’t harm wildlife. A winter cruise to Tromos also offers the opportunity to explore and hike in beautiful, remote villages.

Five Reasons to do a Norway Cruise with Secret Atlas

1. exciting expedition itineraries with our norway cruises .

Joining an expedition cruise is the opportunity for one-off exciting experiences, flexible itineraries. Visiting Svalbard on a micro-expedition cruise is the chance to explore the polar wilderness and encounter astounding wildlife with a good chance of seeing polar bears, walruses, puffins, and Arctic foxes. As the sea ice retreats, our cruises can circumnavigate Spitsbergen, the largest of Svalbard’s nine islands for more opportunities for wilderness hikes and seeing stunning glaciers up close.

And taking a winter micro-expedition to Tromso in is the chance to witness the northern lights in an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounding by frozen mountains and crystal clear fjords with little light pollution in the north of Norway. By day you could be hiking in beautiful remote villages, and whale watching in the fjords.

2. Smaller, more intimate and sustainable cruises

Our Norway cruises take just 12 guests, travelling as part of a small group offers an intimate, shared experienced with like-minded travellers  – while experiencing some of the most beautiful, unspoilt nature on Earth. Smaller vessels and tour groups also leave a much lower impact on the vital polar environments we visit.

Expedition micro cruises are less disruptive to the incredible wildlife we’re lucky enough to encounter too including the ‘King of the Arctic’  – the polar bear, as well as walruses, Arctic foxes, and a vast array of birdlife. We are a member of AECO and abide by strict rules when viewing wildlife.

3. Explore remote and rarely visited places

Our Norway cruises are all about exploring and we visit rarely visited places. It’s an enriching experience where you’ll discover remote and uninhabited places. Every cruise is led by an experienced expedition leader and expert guide, with deep knowledge of these Arctic destinations.

Every trip is a chance to follow in the footsteps of great explorers, discover historic remnants, experience life in little-known settlements, and go hiking in the polar wilderness where you’ll encounter huge glaciers, ancient rocks, fossils, and mountains.

4. Our cruises are a real adventure

We founded Secret Atlas to take you on an adventure. Feedback from our previous guests is that our cruises are more like a private adventure than a commercial cruise. Large commercial expedition vessels can now take up to 350, but we believe smaller is better.

Expedition micro-cruise vessels leave less of an impact on the environment, and they’re also more flexible. Part of the adventure is that we can change course depending on conditions, so we’re not bound by our itinerary and can adapt for the best chance for wildlife watching and exploring ashore. Smaller ships can also reach more remote places that larger ships can’t access like areas with shallow anchorages and narrow fjords. Travelling with just 12 guests means there’s no hanging around to get ashore, so we can maximise our time exploring.

5. Travel the Arctic waters in comfort

Our expedition vessel is built for safe and comfortable Arctic exploration. They’re ice-strengthened for smooth voyages to polar regions and are equipped wth Zodiac landing craft exploring ashore. Inside, you can experience incredible scenery from the comfort of a spacious lounge, or venture onto a large deck to capture photographs and videos.

You’ll be welcomed aboard with a safety briefing on arrival, and our veteran crew includes a chef preparing three fresh meals a day – to keep you energised for your Arctic adventures. Enjoy comfortable, and much needed rest in the en-suite accommodation and there is also plenty of communal spaces for unwinding in the evenings.

The staggering beauty of the Norwegian Fjords needs little explaining. This stunning landscape has been shaped over millennia by powerful glaciers leaving rugged rock walls, overhanging cliffs and spectacular waterfalls plunging into the sea. Discover our pick of the best small ship Norwegian Fjords cruises below.

The Norwegian Fjords one of the few areas in the world where ships schedule cruising hours simply to give passengers the time to watch the scenery - and the tranquil experience of gliding through the glassy waters and coming to terms with the sheer scale of the region is unforgettable.

If it is the Norwegian Fjords you want to see, check carefully to see how many days are actually spent in fjordland. For variety, pick a cruise which includes the North Cape or even Spitsbergen, or alternatively combine with a Baltic exploration. For us, this is a region where small ships come into their own, so here's a round-up of the seven best luxury small ships that will be cruising the Norwegian Fjords in 2024 and 2025:

Best small ship cruises to the Norwegian Fjords

1. windstar cruises.

Windstar's lovely Star Legend accommodates a maximum of just 312 guests, and departs Edinburgh for a 10-night sailing to Copenhagen on 12th July 2024 , with the reverse route on 12 August 2024 , repeating the same in July and August 2025 , visiting some of the highlights of Norway's fjordland, including Bergen, Geirangerfjord, Olden and Flam.

Formerly operated by Seabourn, this popular little ship emerges from an exciting refurbishment in 2022, further enhancing the friendly and casual ambience that so delights those guests who prefer a smaller ship.

2. Seabourn

Seabourn Sojourn, the luxury line's elegant 458-guest ship, departs Dover on 10th August 2024 on a 14-day North Cape and Majestic Fjords itinerary, with the same itinerary on 14 June and 12 July 2025 .

Scenic cruising of Sognefjord, Trollfjord and Nordfjord, combined with time in numerous towns and villages along the entire Norwegian coast as far as the North Cape, makes this a particularly lovely voyage on which you'll enjoy Seabourn's outstanding comfort and service in the land of the Midnight Sun.

Seabourn Ovation - Wintergarden Suite

The French flagged cruise line's Explorer Yachts offer lovely seven- and 10-night Norwegian Fjords cruises in early and late July 2024 and June 2025. Visiting at this time means long days, better weather and beautiful fields of wildflowers. Starting or finishing in Bergen, we recommend and additional night or two to explore this beautiful historic city.

Experience the Beauty of Norway Up Close

Small ships are able to navigate the narrow fjords and get closer to the stunning scenery than larger ships. Passengers can enjoy panoramic views of the Norwegian coastline, waterfalls, and mountains from the comfort of their ship. Some small ships even have kayaks and Zodiacs that allow passengers to get even closer to the natural beauty of Norway.

Avoid Crowds and Enjoy a More Intimate Experience

Small ships typically accommodate fewer passengers than larger ships, which means that passengers can enjoy a more intimate experience. There are fewer crowds, and passengers can get to know each other and the crew more easily. This makes for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Explore Popular and Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations

Small ship cruises in Norway offer a variety of itineraries that include popular destinations like Bergen, Geirangerfjord, and the North Cape, as well as off-the-beaten-path destinations that larger ships can't reach. Best Time for Cruising the Norwegian Fjords

While September and March are not the ideal times to cruise the Norwegian Fjords, there are still some advantages to cruising during these months. In September, the crowds start to thin out, and the prices start to drop. The autumn foliage also adds a beautiful touch to the already breathtaking scenery. In March, you have the chance to see the Northern Lights, which is a unique experience that shouldn't be missed.

It's important to keep in mind that the weather in Norway can be unpredictable, so it's best to come prepared with layers and rain gear. The fjords can also get chilly, so it's a good idea to pack a warm jacket.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Revel in spectacular blue fjords and mountains... glaciers, waterfalls, idyllic valleys dotted with villages await your gaze.... Explore the fjord country and Norwegian culture both past and present...

Norway's fram museum, chronicling some of norway's most famous and important polar expeditions.

Built to commemorate Norway's participation during the heroic age of exploration, the Fram Museum is filled with the stories and historical artifacts that came out of this period. And located right in the very center of it all is the namesake of the museum itself, Fram, which is actually the name of a wooden polar ship that was used on three historic expeditions, including Roald Amundsen's voyage to Antarctica. Nicknamed the " world's strongest wooden ship", the Fram has been preserved since the mid-1930s and you'll have an opportunity during your visit to board this intrepid vessel and get a glimpse inside a 19th-century sea vessel including its cabins, lounges, cargo hold and engine room.

Tauck Exclusive – Private Grieg Concert

Celebrating grieg with a private piano concert and reception at troldhaugen.

Considered one of the leading pianists and composers of the Romantic era, Bergen's favorite son, Edvard Grieg, brought the musical traditions of his native Norway to international prominence through his work during the second half of the 19th century. Recognized as Norway's national composer, Grieg is a beloved and revered figure throughout his native country – and his home town of Bergen – to this day. On your visit to Troldhaugen, his former home in Bergen (now a museum dedicated to Grieg's life), enjoy an exclusive private piano concert and reception.

Grand Hotel Oslo

For nearly 150 years, a grand experience at an oslo icon.

Everyone deserves to feel grand… like the guest experience you'll have at Grand Hotel Olso, based on true Nordic luxury delivered by a well-trained and enthusiastic international team. Norway's most prestigious luxury hotel first opened its doors in 1874, and has been host to the people of Norway, international guests, world leaders, celebrities and the Nobel Peace Prize laureates ever since.

Jostadlasbreen

A choice of excursions bring you to jostadlasbreen.

Today's excursions across Norway culminate with a stop and view of Jostadlasbreen, the largest glacier on continental Europe. With a total area of 487 square kilometers, this monstrous glacier is home to both Kjendall Glacier and Briksdalbre, one of which you'll have the opportunity to go to today.

Fantastic scenery — the waterfall, mountains, quaint and historic sites, great food onboard the ship, wonderful service on board, and staff were friendly and very competent.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay for entry into Norway; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Norway to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Ponant Small Ships have a licensed and registered French physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

Ponant Small Ships  are  registered in France. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Therefore, roads and walkways may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the sometimes challenging terrain.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

We regret that we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on this cruise. Guests should bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. We also cannot provide you with individual assistance for walking, dining or other personal needs. If you need such assistance, you must be accompanied by an able companion who will assist you.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here.

The southern half of  Norway shares in the climactic benefits of the Gulf Stream. The temperate climate has few extremes of heat or cold. The average high temperatures from May through September range from 55 to 75˚F (13 to 24˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). The lowland area around Oslo in Norway is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer. Not only is Bergen the warmest city in Norway, but it is also probably the wettest, averaging approximately 80 in (2,000 mm) per year.

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov, by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

In the ship's main dining room, slacks and a collared shirt are acceptable for  gentlemen, and for women, slacks/skirt and a blouse are appropriate.  We have found, however, that the international mix of travelers on board tend to dress somewhat more formally than one might expect.  Thus, you may prefer to wear a jacket and tie or a cocktail dress for special evenings like the Captain's welcome and farewell dinners aboard your ship and for the special welcome and farewell dinners at the beginning and end of your journey.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing swimming shorts, bathing suits, t-shirts, tennis shoes or flip-flops.

To add a fun element to your cruise, your Ponant crew will sometimes hold an impromptu "White Party" or "Black & White" Officers 'Evening aboard your ship.  If you'd like to participate (it's purely voluntary), we encourage you to pack a white, smart-casual outfit for the occasion, with possible black accents such as a belt, scarf, etc.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at the hotels. Onboard, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are available at the hotels and aboard the ship. For safety reasons, curling and clothes irons are not permitted aboard the ship.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise:

  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in (Very Important)
  • Hiking boots for those who choose to hike
  • Water shoes or sneakers for those who choose to kayak or go on the rib boat
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella
  • Long pants, fleece jacket or warm sweater; light sweater for warmer days
  • Warm hat, gloves and socks (it can be cool and windy)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sport coat for men (with tie suggested for Captain's dinners) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • White or black and white clothing for possible Officers' Evening aboard ship (see above)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Pre-moistened towelettes
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  •  Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor. While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed. What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Norway Cruises

Adventure Cruises in Norway

Norway is well known for its jagged peaks, fjords, and unending open spaces. The capital city of Oslo is a popular launching point for land-based activities like fishing, hiking, and skiing. However, to experience this fascinating Scandinavian country in its true glory, a small ship cruise around Norway is a must. If encountering as much of Norway's picturesque north is your goal, booking a small ship cruise is the way to go. With thousands of miles of coastline covered in unending fjords, there are countless ways to experience this unique country.

The solitude of Norway's Scandinavian coastline is where adventurous travelers fall in love with this rugged region year after year. With nearly half of the country falling above the Arctic Circle, booking an Arctic cruise is one of the best ways to visit Norway. Choose from any number of dates and locations - small ship cruising around Norway takes place throughout the year. Norway adventure cruises will pave the way for you to encounter some of the most remote wildlife on earth, like walruses, polar bears, orcas, and beluga whales.

Svalbard Archipelago (Spitsbergen)

If whale watching and witnessing the majestic Aurora Borealis (otherwise known as the Northern Lights) are your main Norway cruise goals, booking a small boat cruise through the Svalbard Arctic island chain is the way to go. Located halfway between Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard cruises will take you where few have the privilege to travel. The Svalbard Archipelago 's remoteness makes small ship cruising the best way to experience this isolated region. Travel in and around the Arctic waters surrounding Svalbard's largest island, Spitsbergen, to see jagged mountain peaks, glaciers, and some of the most exciting marine life on the planet.

Lofoten Islands

The quaint fishing village of Lofoten is one of Norway's best-kept secrets. Booking a Norway cruise through this scenic archipelago is the best way to experience this region's jagged mountain peaks, clear-water inlets, beautiful beaches, and spectacular marine life. You will be surrounded by raw, rugged beauty throughout your Lofoten Islands cruise. The dramatic scenery set amongst picturesque fishing villages makes for a photographer's dream. Set above the Arctic Circle, Lofoten is home to one of the world's northernmost populated regions, where daily sightings of sea eagles, puffins, and the Northern Lights are a way of life.

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

Have you ever dreamed of witnessing the captivating beauty and pure majesty of the Northern Lights? The sweeping greenish hues of this fantastic phenomenon, technically named Aurora Borealis, is often at the top of every true adventurer's bucket list. Taking a Norway cruise above the Arctic Circle is the best way to visit this spectacular phenomenon. There are many Arctic cruises to choose from that will weave you in, out, and around Norway's breathtaking fjords during the darker winter months of October - April, when the Northern Lights are at their best.

Nordic Fjords

Nordic fjord cruises are some of the most exhilarating, breathtaking, awe-inspiring types of cruises on the planet. Sailing down and around these long, narrow waterways with mountains steeped on either side is nothing short of amazing. From the deck of your ship, witness spectacular waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet from the majestic cliff tops and fantastic wildlife sightings like the white-tailed eagle, the bearded seal, and reindeer. With over 1000 fjords throughout Norway, you will surely find your small piece of paradise in this beautiful, wild country.

Norway Wildlife

While on a small ship cruise around Norway, you will encounter wildlife most people only get to see in photographs or National Geographic documentaries. Thanks to its northern reaches and presence above the Arctic Circle, Norway is home to exciting arctic species like the arctic fox, Eurasian lynx, reindeer, white-tailed eagle, Atlantic puffin, and the coveted polar bear. If you are lucky, aboard your Norway cruise, you will see walrus' and bearded seals swimming about, and, during the proper season, humpback, sperm, beluga, and orca whales, just to name a few. Thanks to its unique biodiversity, Norway is a photographer's dream.

Best time to cruise in Norway

The best time to visit Norway depends on what kind of adventure you are looking for. If you love whale watching, visiting Norway between October and January will give you the best chance of seeing humpback and killer whales. If catching a glimpse of the majestic Northern Lights is your goal, visiting Norway during the winter months of September through March is the best time to go. However, visiting Norway during the summer months of June through August allows you to experience the midnight sun, the phenomenon where the sun never fully sets. So whether it's endless days or dark, magical nights you are searching for, Norway is a spectacular destination any time of year.

How to get to Norway

Norway is easily accessible from major cities worldwide. Norway's capital, Oslo, is a bustling city with a large international airport, offering direct flights from many major USA and European cities. Bergen, on the southwest coast, is home to Norway's other major international airport. Flying is the best way to travel to Norway since the North Sea separates it from the rest of Europe. You can travel by train from mainland Europe, passing through Denmark and Sweden; however, this way is not as direct and, therefore, not as popular.

Most small ship cruising around Norway takes place above the Arctic Circle, where the landscape is stunning. Tromsø is one of the main cruise departure ports in northern Norway. Other polar cruises can depart from Longyearbyen and Lofoten. Most travelers reach these northern cities by catching a direct flight out of the Oslo or Bergen airports.

Norway Cruise Tips

Plan ahead  - The key to any successful Norway cruise is to plan ahead. Besides purchasing your cruise package and airfare well in advance, consider researching your cruise destination to guarantee you are fully prepared. Researching the weather will ensure you pack proper clothing. Check the activities list to see what type of additional gear you may want to bring. Lastly, see if you need transfers from the airport and book any overnight stays before or after your cruise.

Arrive early  - Arrive early. International travel can be unpredictable sometimes, and when you have invested in a one-in-a-lifetime trip such as this, you do not want to miss the boat. Allow yourself to arrive at the port of call 1-2 days before the cruise departure in case of travel delays. Coming early also lets you settle into Norway's cooler climate and catch up on your jetlag, so you are fresh and ready to go when your departure date is here.

Choosing the right trip  - The types of cruises offered around Norway are so varied you will surely find one to enjoy. Norway's Arctic cruises take you well beyond the Arctic Circle to see snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and rarely-seen Arctic wildlife. Nordic fjord cruises are for you if you love to photograph breathtaking scenery. Are you a whale aficionado? Book a Norwegian whale-watching cruise. Small ship cruising around Norway is for everyone!

What to pack  - Packing for a Norway cruise can be exciting and seem daunting at the same time. The good news is it does not have to be. The trick to packing for a small ship cruise around Norway is layers! Wearing layers allows you to add and remove clothing easily as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day. Pack a base layer that includes dry-wicking material, add a wool sweater or fleece, and top it off with a heavy jacket and non-cotton long pants. Also, do not forget other essentials like medications, chapstick, lotion, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, wool socks, waterproof boots, and a daypack.

Snorkeling Gear  - If exploring what lies beneath the water is on your Norway cruise itinerary, do not forget to bring snorkeling equipment. Most cruise ships usually offer snorkel gear on board; however, bringing your own is always best. Purchasing personal snorkel equipment before your cruise ensures that you find a mask, snorkel, and fins that fit you properly and will typically be of higher quality than what you will find offered on the ship.

Norway Travel Advice  - Small ship cruising around Norway is an exciting adventure. In addition to packing properly, you will want to ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your departure date, get the proper travel visas, and carry the correct currency. Most travelers obtain a visa onboard the flight into Norway. Before your trip, exchanging currency at a local bank usually ensures you get the best conversion rate. Norway's currency is the Norwegian krone.

Witness Norway’s Incredible Fjords on These 8 Scenic Cruises

From more eco-friendly sailings to immersive journeys that will get you deeper into the culture and nature of the region, these cruise itineraries will bring you along norway’s beautiful coastline in comfort..

The country’s more than 1,000 scenic fjords, idyllic mountains, and imposing glaciers are among the many awe-inspiring landscapes you will see on a cruise in Norway . Add sightings of the aurora borealis in the dark winter months, cultural attractions in the cities and towns along the way, plus abundant adventure-filled outings, such as kayaking, mountain biking, dog-sledding, and cross-country skiing, and it’s clear why Norway is such a sought-after cruise destination.

Years ago, on a cruise in Norway, I met a fellow passenger who complained about the sheer number of fjords, saying that he would have preferred more variety of landscape. To me, as a frequent cruiser, these striking vistas are a must-see experience on the world map. Sailing into Trollfjord in the Lofoten Islands, you might even imagine that you see those elusive and fanciful trolls as your ship glides along shimmering water through the 328-foot opening of a passage flanked by towering cliffs.

Most Norway sailings operate between May and September, with the height of the season running from June through August. That said, you can cruise Norway year-round.

It’s worth noting that in 2018, the Norwegian Parliament adopted a resolution that will limit access to only those ships able to sail emissions-free in the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in western Norway; it will go into effect by 2026. While it’s not yet totally clear how exactly the regulation will play out, this could potentially impact which ships sail to Geiranger and Flam in the near future.

What you’ll see on a Norway cruise

Nature and culture are the star attractions on cruises exploring the western coast of Norway. Passengers will have dramatic views as they glide into fjords dotted with scenic mountain-backed villages and colorful homes.

Note that most Norway cruises do not visit the capital city of Oslo, so if that’s on your wish list you’ll want to select your itinerary carefully.

As for other itinerary highlights, the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is a must for history lovers, home to the old wharf area of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dozens of 14th- to 16th-century wooden houses. Bergen also has a bustling fish market and some of the best arts attractions in the country, including the home of composer Edvard Grieg.

If your cruise goes above the Arctic Circle , you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights Cathedral in Tromso, which claims status as a Northern Lights capital based on its position on the so-called aurora oval, improving your chances of seeing the aurora borealis there. Less-visited Alta, also on the aurora oval, has such winter attractions as Northern Lights viewing while spending the night in a teepee at a Sami dogsledding camp—an experience offered by some cruise lines. In North Cape, you can stand at the northernmost edge of the European continent.

Geiranger, at the head of the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord, stuns with waterfalls that include the 1,000-foot Seven Sisters. From Stavanger, visit Pulpit Rock for more cliff and waterfall drama or stay in town and visit the fascinating sardine canning museum, wood houses, and shops in the old town.

Flam has the star attraction of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord, viewable on a one-hour steep ascent on the antique trains of the Flam Railway. Aesund is a pretty fishing village known for art nouveau architecture, while Olden boasts access to glaciers and glacial-fed waterfalls and lakes. Viking history is a draw in Trondheim, founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason and known today for its culinary scene.

Azamara Cruises

Best for comprehensive itinerary

The 684-passenger Azamara Onward will sail Norway in July 2024 on a 17-night itinerary from Oslo to Copenhagen. The ship will call at 13 ports along Norway’s western coast, including heading far north to Tromso, Alta, and Honingsvag, and will sail around the Lofoton Islands to Trollfjord. Less-visited places will include the small northern city of Bodo. The ship is designed as a floating boutique hotel at sea, with seven restaurants, including a well-regarded steakhouse.

Best for a classic ocean liner experience

Cunard’s 3,000-passenger Queen Anne debuts in May 2024, and during its first summer it will head to Norway on three seven-night cruises, round trip from Southampton, U.K. You can do two bucket list experiences at once— sailing on a real ocean liner (a vessel custom built for long voyages) and visiting the Norwegian fjords. The line’s classes of service will be in play, with suites guests gaining access to dine on exclusive menus in the Princess Grill or top-tier Queens Grill. There’s the Britannia dining room or upgraded Britannia Club for everyone else.

Disney Cruise Line

Best for families

Disney Cruise Line does select itineraries in Norway, inspired by the popular Nordic-themed Frozen franchise. The 2,500-passenger Disney Dream will sail to the Norwegian fjords in 2024, with Elsa and Anna likely to make appearances. Family-friendly shore excursions include boat making and seafood cooking classes, with reduced prices for passengers age three to nine. Onboard the ship, there’s a water coaster, Disney-centric Broadway shows, first-run movies, and the opportunity to send the kids to Disney’s Oceaneer Club so you can spend time in the adults-only Quiet Cove pool.

To book: 7-night round-trip sailing from Southampton, U.K., on August 5, 2024, fares from $2,772 per person (with reduced rates for children nine and under); disneycruise.disney.go.com

Cruise in Norway with a local operator—Havila Voyages—that is aiming to create a model for sustainable sailings in the region.

Havila Voyages Best eco-friendly sailings

Norwegian-owned Havila Voyages operates four new environmentally friendlier coastal cruise ships that carry both people and cargo between Bergen and Kirkenes, year-round. The hybrid ships run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and, for up to four hours, on 86-ton battery packs, for emissions-free sailing (the packs can be charged in ports with clean electricity). Done up in decor inspired by Norwegian landscapes, they carry up to 468 overnighting cruise passengers, plus locals, to 34 ports. Shore excursions allow you to leave the ship and rejoin at a later port to get to key attractions.

To book: 12-day summertime sailings from $2,963 per person; 5-night sailings from $1,677 per person; havilavoyages.com

HMS “Gåssten”

Most intimate Norwegian cruise

Chartering the nine-passenger HMS Gåssten is not for the faint of pocketbook, but it will be an experience to write home about. Built in 1973, the small blue and white wooden boat started life as a Swedish navy minesweeper. Today, the boat boasts four comfortable cabins and an oak-lined salon. Sailings are from the colorful fishing village of Henningsvær and explore the Lofoton archipelago, known for its dramatic scenery, including soaring mountains. Hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and kayaking are among the activities offered. (In March and April there are sailings featuring remote ski touring from mountain peaks down to shoreline.)

To book: A 6-night summertime charter (May through September), starts at $68,830, redsavannah.com

If you want an outfitter that truly knows Norway, go with the one that has been sailing there for more than a century—Hurtigruten.

Hurtigruten

Best for local experience

Sailing with Hurtigruten is a classic Norwegian experience. The company has been operating regular service up and down the west coast of Norway year-round for 130 years. The Norwegian Coastal Express ships stop at 34 ports, delivering mail and cargo and serving as transport for locals while carrying international travelers in cruise ship accommodations. The sailings are between Bergen and Kirkenes, up near the Russia and Finland border. You can book 5- or 6-night one-way north or south sailings, or 11-night round-trip cruises that do the whole 2,500-mile circuit. Since some stops are for less than an hour, a key is to also book optional shore excursions, which leave the ship and reboard further down the line.

To book: 11-night fares from $2,309; 6-night from $1,600 per person, hurtigruten.com

Best upscale expedition experience

French cruise line Ponant has expedition ships exploring the Norwegian fjords in summer and winter. In July, the 184-passenger Le Champlain sails between Bergen and Oslo, bringing guests to nature attractions and tracing Viking history with port calls that include Arendal in the south, a popular water sports spot, and sailing up the coast as far as Alesund, and including Olden. There’s also a stop at the historic Swedish city of Goteborg. One sailing, sold by Smithsonian Journeys, adds experts on Scandinavia as lecturers. When you’re not out exploring by inflatable Zodiac, there’s the bonus of an underwater observatory/bar, known as Blue Eye.

The 12-night “In Search of the Northern Lights” sailings are between London and Bergen, and feature overnights in Tromso, Alta, and Bergen, with quality time to explore day and night.
