Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

Belfast's titanic exhibit and a titanic dinner, belfast's award-winning titanic museum... followed by a 9-course titanic tasting dinner.

Learn insider stories behind Titanic, designed to be one of the finest ships ever to grace the seas, on your visit to Titanic Belfast, built on the site of the former Queen's Island shipyards that produced the ill-fated liner. J. Bruce Ismay, Chairman of the White Star Line, asked Lord Pirrie of shipbuilders Harland & Wolff to construct "a stable ship that will not disturb the sediment in the fine wines" they were drinking together at a planning meeting. And while Titanic was, according to her builders, "as nearly as perfect as human brains can make her," she proved no match for nature. Discover more in modern-day galleries that bring the legendary ship back to life... and enjoy a 5-course Titanic tasting dinner in the Great Room of The Merchant Hotel.

Ashford Castle

A taste of the royal life of the past on a two-night stay at ashford castle.

Turrets and ramparts, armor and oak paneling, Waterford chandeliers and gilt mirrors reflect the royal architectural décor you'll find at Ashford Castle. And for two memorable nights during this journey, you can, too.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Ireland; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Deposits and fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $600 per person

Final Payment is due to Tauck  90  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you are interested in sporting activities, many opportunities await you on this particular journey. Golfing is available at select resort hotels. You may rent clubs and purchase golf balls but you will have to bring your own footwear. If you would like to fully enjoy the exceptional courses at Ashford Castle, you may wish to schedule additional nights either before or after your tour. Experience has taught us that the earlier you book your tee time the better – even ahead of your departure! If you decide you would like to play once you have arrived, your Tauck Director will endeavor to honor your request. Tennis facilities are available at several hotels including Ashford Castle and Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Fishing is possible at Ashford Castle. Horseback riding is available at Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa and Ashford Castle. You will have the opportunity to swim in the pool at several of the hotels used on this tour. Any expenses incurred in conjunction with these optional activities are at your own expense.

Ireland has introduced a ban on smoking in all enclosed places of work in Ireland. This includes all bars, night clubs, restaurants and hotels. Although the public spaces within the hotel are non-smoking, you may request a smoking guest room at your hotel.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Ireland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The Best of Ireland, Small Groups involves a considerable amount of walking. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The visits to the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey and Giant's Causeway are challenging due to the steep climbs and long walks involved in the sightseeing.

Most hotels do not have special handicap access rooms.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Ireland can be variable, alternating between wet and cool days, and sunny and mild days. The climate is generally moderate throughout the country, tempered by the Atlantic Ocean Gulf Stream. Average high temperatures from April through October range from 55 to 65˚F (13 to 18˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). Ireland, like other European countries, has experienced unusually warm spells in recent summers. Ireland's greenery owes its notoriety to the frequent rainfall.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in Ireland is moderate. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. The Emerald Isle owes its name to its precipitation, so rain is to be expected anytime.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire, although it is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Ireland:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Traveler photos from Ireland

I would 110% recommend this trip.

“Some of the highlights of the trip were riding through the Ring Kerry, seeing the jaw dropping sights of the Cliffs of Moher, swimming on the Aran Islands and picnicking at Glendalough! Marco was an awesome tour guild and with the hassle-free aspect of booking with EF just make for a spectacular experience!"

–Hannah, traveled on Grand Tour of Ireland Aug. 2022

Take me back, I miss it already!

“This tour was….in a word, life changing. I met amazing people, that included the insanely good at his job tour director, Gavin. I saw beautiful places I had only dreamt of seeing. I made memories that will last a lifetime, and I got to do it in a way that I could afford. If you are on the fence, get off and book the trip!”

–Meghan, traveled on Grand Tour of Ireland: Plus Oct. 2022

Know before you go

Irish folk are known for their slang, so if you want to stay hip, try out some of these popular words and phrases:

  • Bang on: Meaning you’re right, accurate; “You are bang on.”
  • Black stuff: Guinness; “A pint of the black stuff please!.”
  • Brutal: Meaning awful or dreadful; “That was a brutal tackle.”
  • Craic: Pronounce like crack; meaning fun, going on’s like “What’s the craic?” “Where’s the craic?”
  • Deadly or Savage: Fantastic or great; “That was a deadly joke.”
  • Grand: A reply to most questions like how are you, how are you feeling, in response to a statement; “How are you? Grand.” “Meet me here. Grand.”
  • Knackered or Shattered: Exhausted
  • Langers: Drunk
  • The locals in Ireland are known for being friendly. Spark up conversation in the pubs and you may even find a new friend.
  • We said it before and we’ll say it again: The weather changes in an instant. Expect the unexpected.
  • It’s tempting to take pictures at every corner or of every pint you purchase, but remember that life in Ireland is all about living in the moment. Enjoy it!
  • When at the pubs with a group, it’s common for each person to take turns “buying a round” for the rest of the group. Try it out with your new friends!
  • Try new foods, we promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

You’ll sample a variety of local dishes on your trip, but read on for tips, tricks, and delicacies you just must try.

  • Irish Stew: Ireland’s most famous dish of meat, potatoes, onions, and more
  • The Full Irish: Or, Irish breakfast, usually consists of soda bread, bacon, eggs, fried sausages, mushrooms or tomatoes. Locals get their fuel for the day with this massive feast
  • Salmon: Smoked or Irish, Salmon is a treat in Ireland and always fresh! Especially from April – June
  • Galway Oysters: The best oysters are found in the West of Ireland, harvested in Clarinbridge.
  • Soda Bread: Every Irish family has their own soda bread recipe, but it’s always good with butter, alongside Irish stew, or on its own
  • Coddle: A slow cooked combination of sausage, bacon, onions, and potatoes
  • Guinness & Guinness Cake: Why not pair a fresh pint o’ Guinness with a cake made from the dark stout? You’re on vacation, after all.
  • Boxty: Essentially a mashed and grated potato in dumpling-form. Try it at Dublin’s Temple Bar!
  • Black and white pudding: No, not like a Snack Pack. It’s pudding made from blood and fat mixed with barley, pork meat, oatmeal, and suet in one sausage. Trust us, try it.

We plan it all. And then some.

Our group trips to Ireland come with everything included. That’s accommodations, daily breakfasts, activities, and an expert Tour Director who always knows where to find the perfect pint.

We had such an amazing experience with Nordic Visitor who hosted the "Wonders of Ireland" 8-day tour. The group was small, 16 people, so we could use a large van rather than the huge buses that take forever for people to load/unload at each stop. The hotels were top notch, the sites we visited were diverse and enjoyable (distilleries, castles, gardens, waterfalls). Our tour guide Brian was truly incredible. He had a wealth of knowledge about the history, music and folklore of Ireland. He made the trip both informative and fun, and helped the group come together with his warm and engaging personality. Melissa our driver was also fantastic - kind, helpful and chatty. They both went above and beyond to ensure everyone was cared for and enjoyed the journey. I was torn about which company to use, and am so grateful we went with Nordic Visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions About Guided Group Tours of Ireland

You may have a few questions before you book one of these Ireland escorted tours, so we’ve collected the most commonly asked ones for your convenience. If you’d like more in-depth information, check out this helpful  Ireland Travel Guide .

It’s also good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can  Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. To find out about our booking process, payments and more, please read our  FAQs  and  booking terms .

1. WHAT IS A SMALL GROUP TOUR?

Small group trips to Ireland involve travelling with a group of like-minded explorers while being led by an expert local guide.

Choose Nordic Visitor and your group will be capped at 15 people maximum. This way you’ll be able to get to know your fellow travellers and enjoy a more personal experience while learning from your knowledgeable guide.

Journeying around Ireland in a comfortable minibus also means that you can reach places that large groups and coaches can’t get to.

2. WHY IS A LOCAL TOUR GUIDE IMPORTANT?

Exploring with a local tour guide means you’ll have an authentic travel experience in Ireland. Your guide will take you to all the best places, and you’ll discover why Ireland is so special from someone who calls it home. Plus, there will always be an expert on hand to answer any questions you might have.

3. WHAT IS THE BEST SMALL GROUP TOUR OF IRELAND?

The best tour for you depends on what you’d like to experience on your ideal Irish getaway. If you want to get a taste of Ireland on a hassle-free, expert-led trip, then our Nordic Visitor guided Ireland tours tick all the boxes.

These are some of the top things to do on small group escorted tours of Ireland:

  • • Spend time in  Dublin , immersing yourself in the capital’s lively cultural scene
  • • Visit  famous Irish castles  with your guide and learn about their legends and history
  • • Head to the  Cliffs of Moher , one of the most popular stops on the Wild Atlantic Way
  • • Soak up beautiful scenery in nature reserves, like  Wicklow Mountain National Park
  • • Tour Ireland’s oldest distillery,  Kilbeggan , and enjoy a dram or two of whiskey

You find out more about  Ireland’s must-see places  and cool Irish facts in these blog articles.

4. WHO GOES ON YOUR GUIDED TOURS?

Nordic Visitor welcomes a wide range of guests who can choose from a variety of  small group trips in Northern Europe . This means you’ll find that our guests are often varied in age and interests.

5. ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED TO JOIN THE TOUR?

It’s good to know that these Irish tours aren’t recommended for families with young children as they include distillery visits. The legal drinking age in Ireland is 18, so anyone aged 17 or under would be unable to take part in a distillery tour.

If you’d like to explore the Emerald Isle with kids, you can check out our expert-curated  Ireland self-drive packages . These independent road trip itineraries are ideal for travelling with children as they allow plenty of day-to-day flexibility.

6. HOW ACTIVE DO YOU NEED TO BE ON THE TOUR?

To get the most out of your trip, we recommend being comfortable with walking 1-3 kilometres (0.5-2 miles) over the course of a day.

This will enable you to experience Ireland’s stunning natural landscapes and enjoy each sightseeing opportunity. We also ask that you’re able to carry your own luggage onto the minibus each day.

If you’re not sure whether a trip is right for you, please  contact us  for more information before booking.

7. WHAT MEALS ARE INCLUDED?

Breakfast is provided each morning, so you can begin each day with plenty of energy. And depending on the trip, a number of your evening meals will also be included. You can see exactly which meals are part of your tour package in the “what’s included” tab.

Fine dining may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of  Irish food and drink . But thanks to the country’s extensive coastal larder you’ll find a variety of tasty seafood on most menus. Think mouthwateringly fresh shellfish and lobster.

Don’t worry if seafood isn’t for you though, as there will be plenty of other options to choose from.

As part of your tour, you’ll be able to sample some local whiskey. There will also be plenty of opportunities to order a pint of Guinness, perhaps Ireland’s most iconic tipple, during your trip.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you book so we can make arrangements before you arrive.

8. WHAT SORT OF ROOMS WILL I BE STAYING IN?

Our travel experts have handpicked each of the hotels, B&B’s and guesthouses you’ll be staying in based on excellent reviews, personal experience and comfort. So you can be assured that your room will be a restful place to spend the evening after a day of adventure.

It’s also good to know that because you’ll often be staying in historic properties, your room size is likely to vary from one night to the next. And as these properties don’t have lifts, you might need to use stairs to get to your room.

While triple rooms aren’t available, you can choose between single, twin and double rooms on your trip. Please get in touch with us if there are 3 or more people on your booking and we’ll be able to assist you with room types.

9. WHAT LUGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON A SMALL GROUP TOUR?

You can bring one suitcase or large bag per person for your overnight items. It’s also a good idea to bring a small rucksack for your daily essentials. This way you’ll always have items such as your camera, extra layers and wallet to hand.

Throughout the trip, your luggage will travel with you on the minibus. So when you arrive at a new overnight stop, we ask that you please take your bag to your room. And that you bring it back onto the minibus the following morning for the next stage of your journey.

10. HOW MUCH LEG ROOM WILL I HAVE ON THE BUS?

Each of our minibuses has been chosen so that you can travel between stops in comfort on your guided tour. And although our vehicles can seat 17 people, we only allow up to 15 guests onboard to ensure there’s plenty of space.

Most of our tour buses are designed to accommodate the standing height and seating room of someone who’s just above 6 feet (183 centimetres). This means that even many of our taller guests can travel with ease.

There will also be plenty of comfort breaks along the way where you can stretch your legs and enjoy some fresh air. This is also a good time to pause and snap photos of the stunning surroundings.

11. DO YOU TIP TOUR GUIDES IN IRELAND?

Tipping is entirely up to you. In Ireland providing a gratuity for your tour guide is not expected. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

12. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TOUR IRELAND?

The answer to this really depends on how you’d like to experience Ireland. On a Nordic Visitor small group tour, you’ll enjoy a stress-free trip where we take care of all the planning for you.

Choosing a guided tour package means you can relax from the moment you touch down in Ireland. With your local guide at the wheel, all you have to do is sit back, take in the views and experience the local culture. This is perfect if you want to get an insider’s insight into a destination and would prefer not to drive on your trip.

You can also rest easy knowing that we only partner with reliable suppliers, so your accommodation and excursion providers will be of a high standard. This peace of mind, along with small group sizes, makes guided trips ideal if you’re  travelling solo to Ireland  but like exploring with company.

Discover why a guided tour of Ireland is one of the best small group trips in Europe for solo travellers .

On the other hand, if you prefer the freedom of seeing the sights at your own pace, then we recommend checking out these  self-drive tours in Ireland  and Northern Ireland.

Scotland is another top Celtic destination. So if you have  2 weeks , or even  3 weeks , for your getaway, why not combine your visit to the Emerald Isle with a  trip to Scotland ? You can browse our  Scotland and Ireland self-drive tour packages  for inspiration.

13. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Of course, it’s easy to extend your stay in Ireland by adding extra nights in Dublin when you book your trip online. You can enjoy more time in this vibrant city by spending additional nights here before or after the guided portion of your tour.

If you have already booked your package and would like to add extra nights, please contact your travel expert. They will be able to assist with your request.

14. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can choose your preferred start date from each tour’s calendar of scheduled departures. If you’re booking online, you’ll be able to see how many places are left on each departure. And remember, each tour operates with a maximum of just 15 guests.

15. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

We advise checking what flights are available before booking your trip. But it’s best to wait until your travel consultant confirms your tour package by email before buying flights.

If you have missed out on flights, please  get in touch  and we’ll do our best to accommodate a change of dates.

16. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR IRELAND?

The  weather in Ireland  is known for being changeable, meaning you’re likely to experience a variety of conditions. So come prepared for rain or shine, and you’ll be able to explore your surroundings no matter the weather.

As well as with your main suitcase, we recommend bringing a daypack. You can use this to carry spare layers along with daily essentials, such as your wallet, umbrella, camera, water bottle and snacks.

This packing list is a good place to begin:

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Warm fleece or jumper
  • Light base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Reusable water bottle

For seasonal tips and more information on what to bring with you, read this handy  Ireland packing guide . And to make sure you have the right plug attachments, check our guide to  electricity and adapters  in Ireland.

Ireland Tours & Vacations

Dunguaire castle at sunset, reflected in the water, near Galway, Ireland

The Emerald Isle: where the rhythm is slower, the people are warmer, the spirit is fuller, and the earth is richer.

Irish hospitality may be a cliché – right up there with leprechauns and kissing the Blarney Stone – but when you take a  tour in Ireland  (whether that's in Galway or down   South ) you realize that this enchanting republic revels in its old-school approach to life. Connemara really is as brooding and lonely as we’ve been led to believe. The Dublin of James Joyce still lingers on in odd pockets of the city. The Guinness really is that good. If you want to enjoy your holiday, it’s best to leave your cynicism at the door and grab Ireland with both hands: learn the folklore of Roscommon and Donegal,   road trip your way along the south's coastline , go searching for faeries in Knocknerea Mountain, moan about the inclement weather and (above all) embrace the craic.

Best time to visit ireland.

Don’t forget your umbrella! Although the wettest time of year is from October to April, rain is pretty much a guarantee year round. Summer, June to August, promises better weather, and the long days are welcome even if the sun isn’t shining. May, June and September are great months to holiday in Ireland, as there are fewer tourists, more daylight and it’s usually relatively warm for Irish standards). July and August are the country’s busier months, but the festivals, events and good craic that take over the country more than make up for the increase in tourists.

History and government

Early history.

Tumultuous is a good word to describe Ireland’s often troubled and sorrowful history, which is filled with invasion, repression, deadly conflict, religious discrimination and emigration. Ireland’s history dates back to 8000 BC, and progressed from a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural one. Christianity came to the island in the 5th century, replacing the old tribal and Druid societies, though many of the Celtic traditions were preserved. In the 800s, the Vikings started invading and regularly raided and plundered the island for upwards of two centuries. They set up settlements (most notably Dublin), but were eventually pushed out of Ireland by the Irish king Muirecán. (Ireland was then made up of many small kingdoms, who fought each other for dominance of other counties and the entire island.) Then came the Normans. When an exiled Irish king sought help from (English) King Henry II, he sent Norman forces to (successfully) recapture the Irish King’s counties. This event established Norman lords in Ireland, who soon ruled big tracts of Iand. This worried Henry II so much he invaded in person in 1172. Now it was not only Irish lords that were battling for control of the country, but Norman and English ones as well.

Fast forward to 1536 and Henry VIII, who tried to conquer Ireland and extend English law over the country. This was met with fierce resistance, especially when he tried to convert the Irish Catholics to Protestants. This opened up a brutal few centuries, where the endeavor for Protestant rule over Ireland led to many atrocities and battles. In the 1600s, land was confiscated from Catholics and given to Protestant settlers (known as the Plantations), triggering the first wave of mass Irish emigration. Remaining Catholics were subject to persecution, with their rights becoming less and less as time went on.

The Irish Rebellion of 1798, led by the republican United Irishmen (who wanted to overthrow British rule and have a non-sectarian republic) was brutally quelled and Irish self-government was abolished. From 1845 - 49, Ireland suffered the Great Famine, which saw over a million people die from starvation and disease, and a million or more emigrate. Understandably, relations between the Irish people and the British got worse, as the government had many means to stop the severity of the famine. Another tragedy was that this period (along with other factors) contributed to English largely replacing the Irish language. From this time until 1912, there were many attempts at reinstating home rule (Irish self-government) and a number of rebellions were instigated but failed. It was also when two distinct groups emerged: the Irish nationalists (who wanted Ireland to be independent and governed by the Irish) and Irish unionists (who considered themselves British and wanted to remain in the union).

Recent history

In 1922, after the Irish War of Independence and many years of fighting, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed and Ireland was divided into Northern Ireland (six counties) and Southern Ireland (26 counties), known as the Irish Free State. This lead to the Irish Civil War, fought between those who wanted a unified Ireland and those who wanted to keep Northern Ireland under British rule. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) lost, and Northern Ireland remained ruled by Britain.

The Irish Free State was a predominantly Catholic state and the Roman Catholic church had a massive impact on the formation of the country, as it had over much of Irish history. In 1949, the Republic of Ireland was established and left the British Commonwealth. Up until the late 1990s, the economy of Ireland struggled and emigration was an ongoing problem. Unfortunately the economic boom of the 90s and 2000s has faltered, and economic troubles have once again returned. That said, the conservatism of the Catholic church has lost its grip over society, with many social reforms that would have once been unthinkable being implemented in the 90s.

After the division of the counties in 1922, Northern Ireland became a predominantly Protestant state. Years of violence between pro-British Unionists and pro-Irish Republicans have marked its history, which is a complicated and bloody beast woven with political, ethnic and religious differences. It is as fascinating as it is heartbreaking, and worth reading about in a sphere that can do it justice. See our list of recommended books for books detailing this period.

Top 5 Irish mythical creatures

1. leprechauns.

They are Ireland’s most well known mythical characters. They are male faeries who take the form of an old shoemaker and are depicted with mischief in their eyes. Leprechauns are the source of practical jokes, have the ability to grant wishes and have untold riches buried away.

A banshee is a female faerie who is said to emit an other-worldly wail when someone is about to die. While usually heard rather than seen, reports of sightings range from the sight of a beautiful woman who utters a low, pleasant singing to a crone who emits a soul-chilling shriek.

They are creatures that are seals in the water but are human once they shed their skin on land. They are often linked with tales of ill-fated romance, where either a human has stolen the selkie’s skin so they can’t return to the water (and must marry the human) or a human is taken to the depths of the ocean to be their spouse.

4. Dullahan

A dullahan carries its head under its arm and rides a black stallion – and sometimes drives a wagon made out of skeletons! Its mission is to claim souls, stopping only to call out the name of the person who will die. Those who try to watch him will endure a bucket of blood thrown at them or a whip made out of a spinal cord. Only gold can scare it.

A merrow is the Gaelic version of a mermaid/merman – a half-human, half-fish creature with an amiable and benevolent nature. They are known to lure handsome men to live under the sea, but are also capable of living with humans and marrying them. They have a special hat called a cohuleen druith, and can’t return to the water if they lose it.

Top places to visit in Ireland

1. cliffs of moher.

Take your Irish holiday to a level that’s as high as the Cliffs of Moher themselves as you peer over the brink of these monolithic edges. Both vertical and abrupt in stature, these cliff faces provide monumental views over Galway Bay and out to the Aran Islands. Listen to the powerful waves crash against the sandstone far, far below and let the salty smell of the sea breeze calm your mind and lift your soul.

2. Aran Islands

Just when you thought Ireland couldn’t get any more spellbinding, the Aran Islands with their staggering cliffs, Celtic churches, and World Heritage Listed sites, peak out above the waters of Galway Bay to prove you wrong. Follow your local leader as you explore, not only the rugged coastline but also the ruins and remains of both the Bronze and Iron Ages for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

3. Ring of Kerry

From the tranquil sound of Torc Waterfall to the imposing monument that is Staigue Fort, the Ring of Kerry only adds to Ireland’s collection of unspoiled natural wonders. Stop in at bucolic villages such as Killarney, Beaufort, and Kenmare on the 179km circular journey and continue to adventure through ‘the Ring’ by private vehicle to see some shepherds in action on a local farm visit.

To be sure you get the full Irish experience you can’t go past ordering a pint of Guinness at a local pub in the republic’s capital of Dublin. Wandering through the cobbled streets of this electric city is thirsty work and you only need to stop in at one of the many refreshment-ready establishments to get your liquid fill. With a bitter, roasted taste and a texture that goes down (a little too) smooth, you’ll be ordering another round in no time.

5. The Wicklow Way

Known as the oldest, long-distance trail in Ireland, the Wicklow Way offers a whole heap of scenic experiences from passing through open moorland and forested heaths to walking beside fast-flowing mountain streams. If those views aren’t enough to convince you of Ireland’s beauty, then exploring Glendalough Valley’s monastic settlements and peering into deep, sapphire-coloured lakes ought to do the trick.

6. Ballysaggartmore Towers

If you’re wondering what your next stop is on your journey to find some of Ireland’s most magical places, then let us introduce you to the Ballysaggartmore Towers. Created in a gothic style, these towers are both imposing and idyllic, situated in a fairytale-like wooded area that’s perfect for picnics. Join your tour on a walk of the grounds and imagine what it would have been like to roam the ornate stone halls.

7. Killarney National Park

While the small and charming town of Killarney is well worth a visit in its own right, it’s the dramatic and rugged mountain range that sits alongside it that elevates this scenic spot to the top of any ‘must-see’ list. Featuring the highest peak in Ireland in McGillycuddy’s Reeks and some of the world’s most recognizable lakes and waterfalls, this national park deserves to be explored. And admired. And loved.

Getting around

Odyssey travels primarily by coach but also utilizes local transport like trains and ferries as needed. The tour itinerary always provides detailed information on the specific modes of transportation. Ireland boasts a well-connected and expansive rail and bus network that efficiently links smaller towns to major cities.

Accommodation

In urban centres, Odyssey accommodations are typically situated in conveniently located 3-4 star hotels, providing effortless access to public transportation. In less populous areas and rural settings, we opt for family-operated hotels or guesthouses. For extended tours where guests remain in one place for the duration of the trip, we arrange stays in serviced apartments.

Tour guides

Odyssey consistently collaborates with local guides possessing in-depth regional expertise to guarantee an authentic experience, where immersion in the rich history and cultural nuances of the visited destinations is maximized.

Geography environment & weather

Ireland, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, stands as Europe’s third largest island, bordered to the east by Great Britain, with the North Channel, Irish Sea, and St George’s Channel serving as dividers. Politically, the island is delineated into the Republic of Ireland, commonly known as Ireland, and Northern Ireland, an integral part of the United Kingdom.

The topography of Ireland comprises low-lying mountains enveloping a central plain, with approximately 11% of the land covered in woodland. The verdant vegetation flourishes due to the favourable, mild climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Extreme temperatures are uncommon, granting the country relatively moderate winters despite its northern position. Summers in Ireland are also characterized by mild temperatures, notably cooler than those experienced in Continental Europe. The prevalent weather features frequent cloud cover and rainfall, making it essential for residents and visitors alike to be equipped with adequate wet-weather attire.

World heritage sites

Ireland boasts 2 Cultural Sites and 7 Tentative Sites, all offering rich heritage worth exploring. Among these, the Bru na Boinne monument stands out for housing the world’s most significant collection of prehistoric megalithic art.

Another notable site is the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast, known for its remarkable basalt cliffs that have shaped impressive columns and sparked the legendary tales of giants roaming across the sea.

The city of Dublin, a historic gem on the list of Tentative Sites, emerged as the second largest city post the Restoration of 1660. Its expansion during the Georgian era of the Age of Enlightenment was marked by a well-planned layout featuring top-tier institutions and broad, easily navigable streets.

Festivals & events

The Irish people have a deep-seated appreciation for their culture and heritage, often exemplified through vibrant celebrations like St. Patrick’s Day. This traditional holiday, observed on the 17th of March to honor Saint Patrick, has evolved from a feast day dating back to the seventeenth century into a global festivity embraced by the Irish diaspora. It serves as an opportunity for people worldwide to immerse themselves in all things green and embrace a sense of Irish identity for a day.

In addition to St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland boasts a tapestry of culturally significant festivals and events throughout the year. Noteworthy among these is The Cork Jazz Festival, held in late October, attracting renowned artists and musicians to its stage. Another unique event is the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, a month-long celebration in September with roots dating back to the 18th century. Historically, Lisdoonvarna became renowned for its healing mineral waters, drawing in visitors seeking love and companionship. While the art of matchmaking has dwindled, one publican is believed to uphold this tradition by maintaining a notebook of personal profiles. The festival, characterized by dance, music, and merriment, continues to charm attendees with its lively atmosphere, ensuring a memorable experience even if a romantic match is not found.

Eating & Drinking

While exploring Ireland, savor the warm and comforting flavors of Irish cuisine. Rooted in history, traditional Irish dishes revolve around essential ingredients like grains, dairy, and the iconic introduction of potatoes during the 16th century. Today, you can delight in classic potato-based specialties such as colcannon, a delectable blend of potato, cabbage or kale, and rich butter or cream. Similarly, champ offers a unique twist with mashed potatoes infused with the freshness of spring onions, milk, and butter.

Venture into the world of boxty, a versatile dish where raw potato is harmoniously combined with mashed potato and flour, crafted into dumplings, pancakes, or sliced, baked, and fried to perfection. Irish soda bread, a staple on tables across the country, comes in various renditions infused with flavors like honey, dried fruits, seeds, bran, or even a hint of Guinness, always served sliced and generously buttered. This versatile bread is commonly used to soak up the flavors of hearty Irish stew or coddle, a beloved Dublin delicacy featuring a medley of pork sausages and bacon in a single pot.

For the seafood enthusiasts, relish in the freshness of wild, local salmon and the briny goodness of oysters, especially during their peak season in September, celebrated fervently at the Galway Oyster Festival. Shellfish take center stage in many Irish culinary delights, from delectable clams and mussels to succulent prawns adding a touch of the sea to the Irish table. To satisfy your sweet cravings, indulge in barmbrack, a fruit-studded loaf complementing a cozy afternoon tea. Traditionally baked for Halloween, this special bread is embedded with little trinkets, most notably a ring – an Irish tradition where the finder, if unmarried, is believed to be the next one walking down the aisle.

Health & safety

While Ireland is generally safe for travel, it is imperative to remain vigilant for any unusual occurrences. Signs cautioning against pickpockets are prevalent in tourist hotspots, underscoring the necessity of closely monitoring your possessions without exception.

Electrical supply

When traveling abroad, it is essential to bring along a suitable travel adapter to ensure your electronic devices can be powered correctly. In Ireland, the electricity supply operates at 230V and 50Hz. The plugs in use have three flat, rectangular pins arranged in a triangular shape, a design also common in Malta and certain former British colonies.

Great hotel (perfect location), wonderful tour guide (Robert was excellent in every respect), the half-day walking tour was fun and informative, and the events selected exposed me to Fringe events I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. Very well thought out and put together.

We found all the guides in each place excellent, some more than others, but always knowledgeable and obviously in love with their chosen careers. David our coach driver was excellent also, coping with some difficult situations with a cool head and providing us with a running commentary on a country he knows so well - especially Norfolk his home county!

Wife Brenda and I just completed Odyssey tour in UK entitled “Canals and Railways” led by Mal Bock. Absolutely superb, and Mal’s leadership faultless. Extremely good value considering only seven guests, superb local guides and drivers, a most comfortable coach with seating for 24. . Hotels chosen were excellent, most with real character, not places one would have chosen without local knowledge and recommendation, . My wife and I have visited the UK many times- I was born there, but we saw so many places which were new to us. Thank you Odyssey!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Several providers may offer a daily fee enabling you to make calls and access the internet without incurring extra charges. It is crucial to notify your provider of your international travel plans to avoid any potential service disruptions due to unusual activity, similar to how a bank may freeze your account for suspicious transactions.

What is the weather like in Ireland and when is the best time to visit?

The optimal times to visit Ireland are from March to May and September to November, offering a less crowded experience compared to summer and milder temperatures than winter.

Ireland boasts an oceanic climate characterized by cool, damp conditions with consistent cloud cover and rainfall year-round. Extreme summer heat and winter frost are uncommon, and the country experiences minimal temperature variations. The western coasts tend to be milder in winter and cooler in summer, with the southwest coast notably mild during the winter months.

Ireland is heavily influenced by Atlantic weather fronts, leading to a continuous cycle of cloudy days, intermittent sunshine, rain showers, and subsequent clear spells. Fully clear skies are infrequent, with variable and unstable weather patterns prevailing, marked by shifting cloud cover rather than prolonged periods of clear weather.

Responsible travel tips for Ireland

  • It’s advantageous to learn local Gaelic greetings to start conversations smoothly. A familiarity with the native language enriches your experience in Ireland.
  • Keep a business card from your hotel in your wallet for assistance should you get lost. It can be a helpful tool for navigation during your travels.
  • Prioritize having travel insurance coverage to safeguard your journey. If you require guidance on this matter, feel free to reach out to Odyssey for expert assistance.
  • When exploring independently, be mindful of checking the operating hours of shops and museums to make the most of your visit. It’s common for museums and galleries to be closed on Mondays, so plan your schedule accordingly. Additionally, be aware of any upcoming public holidays that may impact your plans.
  • Notify your bank in advance about your overseas purchases to prevent any disruptions due to suspicious account activity. Identify which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards to minimize withdrawal fees while abroad.
  • Before you depart, ensure you have a variety of euros in different denominations. Carrying a moderate amount of cash allows for convenient payments in places that may not accept credit cards. This approach helps you circumvent card transaction fees and simplifies tipping during your travels.

Genuinely interested in what the travellers were interested in and what they wanted to get out of their experience. In addition he demonstrated accountability and a duty of care to all aspects of the trip. Can not thank him enough and could not thank him enough. Thanks to Jose.

Planning Your First Trip to Ireland? Here’s the Perfect 7-Day Itinerary

' src=

7 days in Ireland:

There I was…desperate to travel but completely overwhelmed by the idea of international travel…you can see my post about learning to travel here . Globus sent me an email that would change everything. They have off-season trips called “Escapes” and they were doing one for a week in Ireland for like $700. It might have been the fastest purchase I’ve ever made. Haha… Tour companies may not be everyone’s cup of tea though, you could also plan your own roadtrip through Ireland instead of going with a group.

Of course, like any travel-obsessed person not traveling, I had been collecting miles via American Air’s credit card that were burning a hole in my pocket and now I had somewhere to go!

Planning a 7 day trip to Ireland:

I started doing some research and it looked like I could get two one-way tickets home from Ireland for my boyfriend and me with my miles. I found a “great deal” on Norwegian (cue narrator voice: It turned out to not be such a great deal…) that let’s just say I learned a lot from.

Long story short, our luggage was overweight but the completely bewildered look on our faces made the lady at the counter have mercy on us and she graciously let us go without the extra charge. I’m sweating at this point because I had NO idea what I was doing.

Also, let’s not talk about how I bawled my eyes out the whole way to the airport after saying goodbye to Basil (my dog for those of you new around here). Spoiler: Six years later and I still have a hard time saying goodbye to the little guy when I leave for a trip.

Ok so SURELY the worst is past now right? Nope…we boarded and found ourselves strapped into what turned out to basically be metal folding chairs bolted to the floor. No food, no entertainment…it was Indiana Jones with the chickens on the plane in Temple of Doom…I had no idea that that’s pretty standard on a budget airline… oops…

Thankfully, it was a non-stop flight which is relatively short all things considered. When we arrived we waited forever in passport control land but as promised our Globus guide was waiting to pick us up thank goodness.

I can’t even tell you what it was like riding into Dublin from the airport. It was not only amazing to be IN IRELAND but also the sense of accomplishment from ACTUALLY getting there was HUGE!  I had finally done it and not just talked about it…I WAS IN ANOTHER COUNTRY!!

Some things that I considered when planning this trip was maybe trying to get there during the holidays. At the time, I had a job that was very seasonal specific so sadly I wasn’t able to go during Halloween in Ireland BUT we were there just as they were getting ready for Christmas which was pretty great.

A Day in Dublin :

We had flown overnight so it was still pretty early in the morning when they picked us up. They took our luggage to the hotel and set us loose for the day. Thankfully, I had known that this was what our first day was going to look like so I had booked a hop on/off bus tour for us to get an overview of the city which was awesome.

St. Patrick's Cathedral - 7 days in Ireland

We also made a stop at Ireland’s National Museum of Archeology to see the “bog people”.  Bog people or bog bodies are found buried and basically mummified in peat bogs.  The whole museum was incredible. I would highly recommend a stop.

By the end of the day we were WHOOPED but we had the welcome dinner with the rest of our tour mates with Globus before bed. That first dinner we ended up finding a couple people who we ended up hanging out with the whole rest of the trip. We’re still connected via social media today.

The next day the tour actually started with our guide and driver taking us through Dublin before giving us a little more free time. We went to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells and the long room before walking around some more.  That evening we went to the Guinness Storehouse for their tour and a special dinner. It was SUCH a fun experience. You have to do their tour when you’re in Dublin and if you have time you should definitely stop for a bite at one of their restaurants. The food is SO good.

Galway to the Cliffs of Moher:

After Dublin we headed across the country through the Burren to Galway. I know this will be a controversial statement but I like Galway better than Dublin. There’s probably no real comparison but it had such a great feel to it and having grown up going to NYC during my summers, Dublin just reminded me of any major city I had ever been too.

We got to wander around down to Galway Bay and see the Spanish Arches before grabbing lunch. It was a fun day in just the kind of weather that you expect in Ireland.

However, when we ventured to the Cliffs of Moher it was so BLINDINGLY sunny that all my pictures are totally washed out.  You just have to laugh because everyone and their mother told me that we were crazy for going so late in the year…it was ‘just going to rain constantly’ and we ‘wouldn’t get to see anything’. Just goes to show ya, don’t let anyone talk you out of doing anything that you want to do!

Off to Ennis for the night. This little town was SO cute, I wish we could have stayed longer. We had an AWESOME pub dinner near our hotel and walked around all evening. Ireland was just starting to put out all their Christmas decorations which was lovely.

Ring of Kerry Highlights:

Ennis was the start of our drive along the Ring of Kerry. Incredible landscape…I mean INCREDIBLE. It got to the point, honestly, where we were just overloaded by the scenery. There was SO much to look at and take pictures of…just crazy!

We stopped at the Kerry Bog Village along the way for Irish coffees and got a chance to walk around the historical recreation village they have set up.  They had a couple of Irish Wolfhounds who just loved Ian. It was very cute.

Ian with wolfhounds in the Kerry Bog Village on our 7 days in Ireland trip

Our driving tour through the Ring of Kerry ended in Killarney and as someone who grew up listening to ”Christmas in Killarney” every year…it was SO fun. I hadn’t thought about it till we got there and it was all lit up for Christmas! Gorgeous.  Our tour guide had overheard a couple of us talking about how we love Indian food so he pulled us aside as we got off the bus and recommended a place to get dinner in Killarney and it was the BEST Indian food EVER.

Tour of Blarney Castle:

Let me just start this next section with an honest-to-goodness confession. Blarney Castle was the one thing on our 7 days in Ireland tour that I was like “meh” about…it seemed totally touristy and vaguely tacky and there was no way I was going to kiss some nasty stone.

Blarney Castle Ireland

This was legitimately one of the coolest stops on the tour. I didn’t know that you’d get to walk through the WHOLE castle to get to the top where the stone is and Blarney Castle is just a gorgeous ruin.  (I still wouldn’t kiss some nasty stone but Ian did so here’s a pic! Haha…)

In addition to the actual castle, there are extensive gardens to walk through which was very fun even in the dead of winter. The moral of the story…don’t write something off for being dumb until you actually know all the info.

After Blarney Castle, we headed on through Cork to Waterford and toured the Waterford Crystal workshop. UNREAL. The detail that goes into these pieces is just incredible. Very informative tour and then we stayed the night in Waterford. As the name would suggest it was right on the water and gorgeous.

We did one of Globus’ excursions that night out to a pub in a thatched cottage. There was live music and we had the BEST time. It wasn’t some crazy extravagant night…just a couple pints with our new friends listening to a very funny musician. That’s the kind of stuff that sticks with you, ya know?

Avoca Shop:

This trip started my tradition of researching something special that I’d like to bring home to remind me of my time wherever I’m going. For my trip to Ireland, it was SOMETHING from Avoca. I found out about them because we were going to tour their weaving mill on the last day of our trip and had never heard of them. One spin around their website and I was sold.

Avoca Mill Building Founded 1723 Ireland

Founded in 1723, they are Ireland’s oldest weaving mill and they have a wonderful experience set up in Avoca, County Wicklow. You get to watch them weave the most gorgeous colors you’ve ever seen into all types of blankets, scarves, shawls…you name it.

After a very difficult decision-making process, I chose a shawl with pockets to keep my hands warm. It’s still a piece I absolutely love today and brings back all those Irish memories.

Glendalough Monastery:

Our last stop of the trip was to the stunning Glendalough Monastery.  A medieval settlement founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century (you heard me…SIXTH CENTURY…crazy).

We took a walking tour through the ruins and the cemeteries. Absolutely stunning. It was one of those days where it was so clear and so cold that it just made everything sharper and somehow more epic.

IMG 2331

There was a restaurant a short walk away that we all went to and grabbed lunch at before we headed back to Dublin. Once back in the city, we had a farewell dinner which was very bittersweet as we had definitely become a close-knit little group.

I would not hesitate to go on another Globus trip and, in fact, I went with them to Italy in 2019 and loved that trip just as much as this one! Globus’ tour guides are the absolute top-of-the-line. You’ll learn so much and make some amazing memories.

Belfast Day Trip:

We decided to stay an extra day to officially make it 7 days in Ireland and take a day trip to Belfast before heading back home. Dublin is very walkable so we easily found our way to the pickup location in the wee (obviously very Irish haha) hours of the morning.

About two hours after we left Dublin, we arrived in Belfast. It was an interesting transition as we headed through the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland (the UK). All week we noticed all the signs are in Gaelic and in English. When crossed over to Northern Ireland…no more Gaelic.

Our tour guide from Globus was thrilled we were going because we had gotten his perspective on “the troubles” in Ireland throughout the week and now we were going to get to hear about them from the other side while we were in Northern Ireland.

It was an enlightening and heartbreaking education for sure. It’s not all leprechauns and pots of gold in Ireland and I appreciated seeing that side.

Belfast’s The Titanic Experience:

As a teenager, I had been fascinated with the Titanic so much so that despite being SO excited for the movie…I ended up walking out because it wasn’t a “historical retelling”. I was a very strange child.

Obviously, with all that in mind, I HAD to go to The Titanic Experience while we were there. It. Is. PHENOMENAL. The Titanic Experience is a multimedia museum and no expense was spared. The Titanic was built and shipped out from Belfast and they’re VERY proud despite how things ended. To quote, “She was fine when she left us!”. So good.

IMG 2411

So many artifacts and recreations and pictures…it was amazing. At the end, you walk out to where the Titanic stood before she slid into the water.

Carrick a Rede Rope Bridge:

After The Titanic Experience, we headed to the Carrick a Rede Rope Bridge. Full disclosure, I don’t like heights. Like jelly legs…instant belly quivers…don’t like heights. I don’t know what I was thinking but I was seduced by the pictures and the fact that I knew Ian would love to do this.

I googled it while writing this post to make sure I didn’t misspell it and like the second result on Google was “Carrick a Rede Bridge Deaths”. Even now I feel sick to my stomach thinking about it. Haha…

DSC 0040 mix01

Once across the bridge, I was euphoric with the realization that I had SURVIVED! I didn’t die! Yay! But then…you guessed it…we had to go back. Nightmare.

Giant Causeway Tour:

This was one of those moments where you just look around and think “nature is EPIC”. Made up of interlocking basalt columns, it LOOKS man-made. So bizarre!

Giant's causeway

We got to explore all over the place and I finally got my cliffs picture after being blinded at the Cliffs of Moher.

There was time for dinner in the cutest little pub we’d seen all week where they had peat on the fire and I ordered the most incredible seafood soup. It was a perfect way to end our week in Ireland.

Concluding 7 days in Ireland:

A quick nod to my first experience using Dublin PreClearance ( which you can get more details about here ).  We took the Airlink bus to the airport on the morning of our departure and went through the nicest security process I’ve seen. After that, we headed down to Dublin PreClearance where we went through TSA security and US customs.

Once through, we were considered to be on US soil so when we arrived back in Philly…we arrived as domestic passengers so we just got our luggage and headed out. So good.

Our flight home if you remember from the beginning of this adventure was miles redeemed on American Airlines. You have never seen two more grateful little country mice than the two of us after our experience on Norwegian. What? There are movies? Wait? You’re feeding me for free? It’s hilarious to look back at now but we were so appreciative.

So 7 days in Ireland, this was the trip that started it all. Going for the first time on a guided tour was exactly what I needed to get the lay of the land and get the confidence that I could, in fact, totally do this. There was no stopping me after this!
