Utah travel FAQs

Where is utah.

Utah is a landlocked state in the Western United States. Its neighboring states include Wyoming to the north, Arizona to the south, Colorado to the east and Nevada to the west.

How do I get to Utah?

Getting to Utah is relatively easy with a number of different transportation options available.

These include flying into one of their seven commercial airports such as Salt Lake City International Airport and Provo Municipal Airport, embarking on a road trip from one of the neighboring states, or catching public transport in the form of a bus or a train with several routes taking you to various destinations within the state.

How far is Utah from California?

If you were to drive from California to Utah, it would take you roughly 12 hours. If you'd prefer to fly, it'll take you just under 2 hours from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City.

Getting around Utah

While Utah also has a good bus and train system between Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo, you'll struggle to get around if you want to venture further.

Joining a tour or driving is the way to go as you'll be able to see way more. Driving around Utah is fairly straightforward as major highways are easy to navigate and well-maintained.

What is the weather like in Utah?

Utah has a dry, semi-arid and desert climate. This means summers are very hot (although it's a dry heat as humidity is very low) and winters are cold. In fact, Utah is one of the driest states in the USA. Despite the desert-like climate, Utah still experiences four distinct seasons with heavy snowfall in the north.

What do I pack for Utah?

What to pack for Utah depends on what time of the year you're traveling in. Regardless of the season, there are some items you should always pack.

Some of these items include sensible and comfortable walking shoes (most likely, you'll be doing a lot of hiking during your time in Utah), a sun hat or cap, and some sunscreen (especially in summer).

If you're traveling in winter, pack trousers, sweaters, waterproof jackets, and thick coats to keep yourself warm.

When is the best time to visit Utah?

The best time to visit Utah is generally in May, September or October as you'll avoid large crowds and extreme temperatures. However, with four distinct seasons and lots of activities on offer, it really depends on the type of trip you want to have.

Utah has a dry, semi-arid and desert climate with sizzling summers that often exceed 100°F and freezing winters — particularly in northern Utah which gets an average of 13 metres of snow per year. However, as one of the driest states due to low humidity, the heat and cold are more palatable than other states.

What is the internet access like in Utah?

Most of Utah's national parks have reception areas or tourist hubs where wi-fi access is available. However, if you're hiking through the parks or you've stopped at a high-altitude viewpoint, you probably won't be able to get cell phone data coverage.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

We really enjoyed our time. A lot to do the girls enjoyed playing miniature golf and the show was fantastic and really funny. It was more fun we felt then the one at the OK Corral which we feel, takes itself way too serious. The people are very friendly and the prices are reasonable. The best part is they keep their beer really cold. ~ Michael S.

A very witty show and upbeat. My other half and I come out every year but this was the first year we stopped here. It is more on our repeat attraction list! ~ Sara S.K.

The entire place was AWESOME. The actors were very good, they really put effort into their performance and loved to get the crowd involved. The museums are full of history and very well kept. The prices were very reasonable for everything. The old west saloons were very authentic. The food was delicious AND the beer was cold, the actors even came in and interacted with the patrons. The whole place was a great family experience. I recommend Tombstone to anyone. 5 Stars ~ Tyler H.

Funny shows and 2 dollar draft specials?? I'm impressed they even have a shooting gallery and panning for gold. I like the ghost and murder tour they have is pretty awesome too. You gotta check out old tombstone western town if you goto tombstone. ~ Jake S.

An awesome mix of good ole fashion Tombstone history with a great mix of family fun and comedy! A must see! ~ Bill F.

An awesome place to bring your family for a fun-filled day! The Western Theme park is located in the town of Tombstone @ "Old Tombstone" located on 4th & Toughnut.

GO SEE THE GUNFIGHT ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!! (also family friendly). They have a Cantina with Coffee & alcoholic beverages, a miniature golf course & more! ~ Heather M.

Trip Itinerary

mini wild west tour

Los Angeles Arrival

Welcome to Los Angeles, a sprawling metropolis of seemingly endless sunshine and a leading center of entertainment, fashion and sports. Upon arrival, transfer independently to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

mini wild west tour

Los Angeles – Anaheim – San Diego / driving distance: 131 mi / 211 km

This morning, pick up your rental car and make your way south to Anaheim, Orange County’s headquarters for fun. Spend the day surrounded by icons and classic characters at the original Disneyland Park or at its companion park, Disney California Adventure Park (optional, fees apply). Visit the nation’s oldest theme park, Knott’s Berry Farm, filled with old west history and thrill rides (optional, fees apply). Or choose from one of Anaheim’s many other fun-filled attractions before continuing further south to San Diego whose cool breezes, tranquil waters, and miles of world-renowned beaches welcome visitors from all over the world.

mini wild west tour

San Diego – Tucson / driving distance: 410 mi / 670 km

Take time to enjoy more of San Diego’s beautiful surroundings before heading east through California’s Imperial Valley and across one of the largest deserts in North America to Tucson, Arizona. Built upon a profound Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Old West foundation, Tucson offers visitors an authentic Southwestern experience. This evening, observe astronomical wonders and discover your place in the universe by spending a few hours, or the entire night, stargazing.

mini wild west tour

Tucson – Tombstone – Las Cruces / driving distance: 322 mi / 518 km

This morning, depart Tucson for Tombstone, and an encounter with history that you can only find in “The Town Too Tough To Die.” Discover original buildings dating as far back as the late 1870s and catch a live gunfight. Walk the same streets that Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp, and a host of other legendary men and women of the American West walked throughout the years; or visit Boothill Graveyard, the most famous cemetery in the West. Afterward, continue to Las Cruces, New Mexico. With the majestic Organ Mountains to the east and the mighty Rio Grande to the west, Las Cruces, meaning “the crosses,” has a mysterious presence. Its rich history haunts it still with reminders of Billy the Kid, who was sentenced to death in the area, and Pancho Villa, who spent time here.

mini wild west tour

Las Cruces – Albuquerque – Santa Fe / driving distance: 287 mi / 462 km

Today, you’ll head north to Santa Fe via Albuquerque. Albuquerque’s Historic Old Town offers a taste of New Mexico’s Spanish colonial past while the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, owned by the state’s 19 different Pueblo communities, offers a glimpse into the history of the region’s Native American cultures. Santa Fe, founded on the ruins of an abandoned Indian village, is the oldest capital in the U.S. and remains one of the most picturesque cities in the state. Be sure to visit one of Santa Fe’s famous art galleries, art markets, or museums full of traditional and contemporary art, including works by their own Georgia O’Keeffe; or shop for authentic creations you just won’t find anywhere else.

mini wild west tour

Santa Fe – Taos – Durango / driving distance: 271 mi / 462 km

Depart Santa Fe for Taos whose landscape is a dramatic reminder that you are now surrounded by some of the most ancient land forms on Earth. Visit Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark. The multi-storied adobe buildings of this village have been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years. Continue to Durango, Colorado’s year-round playground whose historic sites and landmarks are waiting to be discovered. Step back in time at the Diamond Belle Saloon whose bar still has a bullet hole in it from a gun fight.

mini wild west tour

Today, you may wish to board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for an unforgettable journey back in time. Originally constructed in 1882, and in continuous operation for 131 years, the railroad’s vintage steam locomotives let you relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear as you travel alongside the Animas River, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the entire western U.S. This route boasts some of Colorado’s most striking canyon scenery and spectacular views. You’ll pass fertile farmlands, old stagecoach roads, old mining camps, and be in the shadow of peaks reaching over 14,000 feet. It won’t take you long to figure out this is much more than a train ride (optional, fees apply).

mini wild west tour

Durango – Mesa Verde National Park – Monument Valley – Kayenta / driving distance: 219 mi / 352 km

This morning, head west to Mesa Verde National Park, home to some of the most notable and best preserved cliff dwellings in the U.S. Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years. Continuing west just past Cortez you’ll drive through the “four corners”, the only place in the U.S. where four states intersect at one point: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. Further west is Kayenta, Arizona, gateway to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. This great valley is framed by scenic clouds that cast shadows on the desert floor, and boasts sandstone masterpieces that tower to heights of 400 to 1,000 feet.

mini wild west tour

Kayenta – Grand Canyon – Williams / driving distance: 212 mi / 341 km

Depart early today for Grand Canyon National Park, a natural wonder that you simply have to see to believe. Spend the day discovering the distinct South Rim of the canyon. Stop at one of the numerous outlooks, walk part of the Rim Trail or along the historic Hermit Road, visit a Photo Hot Spot or climb to the top of a stone Watchtower for panoramic views that extend over 100 miles on clear days. When you’ve had your fill, continue to the quaint mountain town of Williams where you will experience the personality of an authentic Western village.

mini wild west tour

Williams – Route 66 – Hoover Dam – Las Vegas / driving distance: 226 mi / 364 km

This morning, head west to Seligman, a small town located along Historic Route 66. Evidence of the old road can be seen all along Seligman’s main street where motels, cafes and numerous Route 66 gift shops beg to be explored. From here you’ll join Route 66 and travel along the longest remaining stretch of this historic route to one of Arizona’s hidden treasures, Kingman. At the Arizona Nevada border, Hoover Dam makes for an awe-inspiring stop. Considered the largest single public works project in the history of the U.S. and an Arizona landmark, Hoover Dam is filled with history and offers a colossal view of the Colorado River and Lake Mead. Continue to Las Vegas, a desert oasis of neon lights and a city that needs no introduction.

mini wild west tour

Enjoy a full day Las Vegas style. Walk the famous Strip lined with mega-resorts, place a bet at one of the many casinos, dine at world-class restaurants, catch the latest must-see show, shop designer boutiques, ride a roller-coaster, lay by the pool… the list goes on. With so much to do, 24 hours in a day hardly seems like enough.

mini wild west tour

Las Vegas – Calico – Los Angeles / driving distance: 287 mi / 462 km

This morning, take the opportunity to photograph the iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign before making your way back to Los Angeles. Spectacular scenery surrounds you as you travel through the Mojave Desert, while a visit to Calico Ghost Town, an authentic Old West silver mining town, offers visitors the opportunity to share in its rich history and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding desert environment.

Mini-Hollywood in Almeria? …

...Yes, that's right! Mini-Hollywood is an area located in the Desert of Tabernas , Almeria, the only desert in Europe.

It’s unique, beautiful and enigmatic landscapes provided the backdrops for historic legendary films such as 'A Fistful of Dollars', 'For a Few Dollars More', 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', 'Indiana Jones and the last Crusade'…

Hundreds of celebrities and actors left their footprints here, like Clint Eastwood, Brigitte Bardot, Anthony Quinn, Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon, Sean Connery, Raquel Welch, Orson Wells ... It was the paradise for Hollywood cinema for two decades, the 60s and 70s and the location for Sergio Leone movies .

Presently there are three sites that are operated independently, that are open for visitors: the , Oasys Theme Park, Fort Bravo and Western Leone . All of them offer a variety of the American Wild West attractions, some of them are still being used as film locations.

The 3 Western Towns:

Almeria Insider Tip !

When coming to Mini-Hollywood, you should wear comfortable shoes, and on hot days sun protection and at least one bottle of water. I also recommend backpacking particularly if you are coming with children since there will be much walking waiting for you. Also, if you decided to visit the Oasys Theme Park, don't forget your swimsuit and towel because you may want to relax and cool off in the pool!

Getting here:

Make sure to check their exact location on the google map provided below, they are close to each other. (zoom the map in and out and right-click on the yellow camera icon:)
