The Birth of Parker Ranch

In 1788, British Captain George Vancouver gifted five cows to King Kamehameha I, who allowed them to roam freely on Hawai‘i Island, declaring them kapu (off-limits). By 1809, the cattle population had exploded, causing significant damage to the island’s agriculture. Massachusetts sailor John Palmer Parker arrived in Hawai‘i during this time and later, with the King’s permission, began hunting the wild cattle, which marked the beginning of Parker Ranch.

John Palmer Parker’s Legacy

After his return to Hawai‘i during the War of 1812, John Palmer Parker brought back an advanced musket, earning him exclusive rights to hunt the wild cattle. In 1816, Parker married Chiefess Kipikane, the granddaughter of King Kamehameha I, and established the Parker dynasty. They built their homestead on the slopes of Mauna Kea, and Parker quickly turned the cattle into a thriving salt beef industry, which became a cornerstone of the island’s economy.

Transformation During the Monarchy

The death of King Kamehameha I in 1819 signaled a period of profound change in Hawai‘i, including the end of traditional kapu systems and the arrival of Christian missionaries. Under King Kamehameha III, Parker Ranch expanded as John Parker acquired more land. The introduction of Spanish-Mexican vaqueros, known as “paniolo,” to train Hawaiians in cattle handling further solidified the ranch’s cultural significance.

Founded in 1847 as a genuine working cattle ranch, Parker Ranch continues to prosper to this day. The ranch is one of the largest of its kind across the entire United States, with more than 30,000 cattle over thousands of acres of land. However, these days the business begun by John Palmer Parker, also includes estate holding, commercial leasing, and of course, visitor attractions.

Visitors to Parker Ranch can tour the two historic homes, Puuopelu and Mana Hale. The homes tell the Parker family's story through historic heirlooms and works of art. Mana Hale is a two-story koa wood house, built by John Palmer Parker. It features small rooms, a narrow staircase and low ceilings. The more elaborate Puuopelu, a "Hawaiian Victorian" manor house, was the family home through sixth generation hier Richard Smart, who decorated the home with an extensive art collection and antiques from world travels.

Founded in 1847 by John Palmer Parker, the Parker Ranch has continuously operated in the Waimea area as a working cattle ranch. Today, the ranch produces grass-fed beef for the Paniolo Cattle Company, which provides quality, locally raised meat for area restaurants and markets. Other aspects of the ranch include the philanthropic foundation that works to improve the Waimea community and the people in it. Self-Guided Ranch Houses Tour Parker Ranch boasts two historic homes that visitors may take self-guided tours of. These homes are the Mana Hale and Puuopelu. The former is the older of the two, built by the ranch’s found John P. Parker. Inside, you will find narrow passages and low ceilings. It does not sit in its original location. The owners moved it later to its current site next to the Puuopelu house.

The larger Puuopelu has a Hawaiian Victorian style and served as the family’s home through the sixth-generation heir Richard Smart. He planted lush gardens around the house that you can walkthrough. Inside the home, you will find family pictures and art collected by the Parkers through the years.

Hunting Trips Parker Ranch also provides guided hunting trips. Each trip includes one guide for each pair of hunters. You have options that include big game hunts all year long, turkey hunts in the spring, or upland bird hunts during the fall and winter. Options even allow you to hunt with pointer dogs or assist in wild pig management operations. Parker Ranch also can provide you with firearms, so you don’t have to bring your own on the flight to the Island of Hawaii.

Plus, since the ranch carefully manages wildlife in the area, hunting trips are 98% successful, giving you a high chance of bagging the game you are after.

Farmer’s Market at Pukalani Stables Parker Ranch honors its place in the history of paniolos through its activities in conjunction with the Paniolo Preservation Society at the Pukalani Stables. In fact, Parker Ranch in 2022 donated its Pukalani Stables to the preservation group to continue the tradition of educating the public and bringing together the community.

Locals from Waimea gather for weekly events at Pukalani Stables. The stables host a gift shop, the Na Wahine Holo Lio Pau Museum, the Paniolo Heritage Center, and two farmer’s markets each week. The Parker Ranch, formerly one of the largest, privately-owned ranches in the country, has a presence in just about everything in Waimea Town (Kamuela) , from the schools to the hospital. At one point in time, the ranch covered 225,000 acres of land, 9 percent of the Big Island.

Hawai'i's history with cattle began in 1793 when King Kamehameha the Great received five head of cattle as a gift from British Captain George Vancouver. The king quickly labeled the cattle "kapu"(off limits) in order to allow them to grow and thrive. What seemed like a great idea at the time eventually turned into a dangerous nuisance for the native people living in Kohala and on the slopes of Mauna Kea. The wild cattle, which were anything but docile, would rampage homes, destroying property and injuring people. To help solve this problem, the king called on John Palmer Parker, a Massachusetts-born sailor who had already garnered favor with the king in 1809 at age 19. Parker would capture and butcher the cattle, then sell the meat to visiting ships. The process sounds a lot easier than it actually was since the cattle had adapted to their wild surroundings and were rather quick to avoid being caught. As his fee, Parker kept the best cattle for himself.

Hills near Waimea (Kamuela) Town

Eventually, King Kamehameha offered Parker his granddaughter, Kipikane, for a wife. With his herd of fine cattle and the land from his wife, Parker was able to start building the massive Parker Ranch.

The paniolo tradition came about when three Mexican-Spanish cowboys were brought from Mexico to teach the locals the ways of ranching. The family dynasty has had its ups and downs culminating with the death of the final owner, Richard Smart, in 1992. He left the majority of his multi-million dollar estate in a trust that would benefit the Waimea area. Today, the working ranch comprises 150,000 acres with an average of 30,000 to 35,000 Angus and Charolais cattle.

The cattle are raised on the fertile lands of the Big Island until they reach a certain age and are then transported via ship or plane to the mainland for processing. The paniolos still maintain the herd with the help of 250 horses. Their contribution to the area is celebrated on a regular basis with rodeos.

Parker Ranch Center

The Parker Ranch Center, on Mamalahoa Highway (19) in Waimea offers a trip back through time at the small museum which chronicles the evolution of the Hawaiian cowboy.

Parker Ranch Historic Homes

If you are interested in seeing how the ranch owners spent their days and nights take a side trip to the Parker Ranch Historic homes, Mana Hale and Pu'uopelu. Inside you will find traditional Hawaiian artwork, quilts and koa woodwork. Both homes are open Monday thru Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is $8.50.

Hawaii’s Cowboy Country: Historic Parker Ranch

Surprising to many, Hawaiians were raising cattle long before their mainlander counterparts. Even today, four of the USA’s twenty biggest ranches flourish on the Big Island. So signing on for a cattle country tour, my hubby and I check out Parker Ranch, Hawaii’s oldest and largest.

Paralleling miles of fenced pasturelands dotted with stands of gnarled windbreak trees, our route climbs to 2500 feet above sea level. While we munch our macadamia-nut banana bread under big blue skies, cattle chomp abundant grasses along rolling green hills. We soon pull into a trendy Waimea-town mall, certainly not the dusty 19th century cowboy town we’d imagined.

From the Gear up and Go desk our guide Anthony ushers us aboard his suburban 4×4 and along the Mamalahoa Highway sets the scene.

“Our 35,000 cattle graze on these lands where over 10,000 Hawaiians once lived, farming along Waimea’s streams and collecting feathers from forest birds,” he explains. “But all this changed at Kealakekua Bay when Captain George Vancouver sent five cows ashore on outrigger canoes in 1793. King Kamehameha put a kapu on this gift, so cattle couldn’t be touched. At first kept in a large stone paddock in Kona, these longhorns eventually escaped and rampaged over farmlands for years.”

Just south of Waimea’s center, we first stop at beautifully landscaped grounds.

Walking carefully across these beautiful, smooth floors, we study antique tools, historic furnishings and artwork. While gazing at early portraits, Anthony introduces the captivating family.

“The Parker’s saga began in 1809 when young John Palmer Parker, a sailor from Massachusetts landed in Hawaii…this was way before other foreigners ventured to these islands, one year before King Kameheameha I united the islands and 10 years before the Missionaries first came.” He goes on to explain how the great Kamehameha permitted this humble, hardworking tea-totaller to stay. Parker worked more than 30 years for the monarchy, first managing the King’s fishponds and later commissioned as a royal cattle hunter culling the maverick herds now roaming Mauna Kea’s slopes.

Parker married Kamehameha’s granddaughter Kipikane in 1816 and made his descendents prominent Hawaiian royalty. This sailor-turned-cowboy and his princess began a 160-year-old cattle dynasty with Kamehameha III’s two-acre land grant for $10, Kipikane’s 640-acre dowry and his purchase of 1,000 acres more, later expanding to over 175,000 acres.

After three generations, the Parker family work ethic diminished: Grandson Samuel began frivolously spending the fortune; John Parker II and wife Hanai, purchased Pu’uopelu, the elegant Hawaiian-Victorian mansion next door in 1879 and their son John Parker III married Elizabeth, a European debutante. Dying shortly after daughter Thelma was born, his half of the estate went to her. This story continues within Pu’uopelu.

At eighteen, Thelma married Virginia businessman and horse breeder Henry Smart and had a son, Richard Palmer Smart. Tragically, Thelma and Henry died in1914, leaving baby Richard sole heir to the estate. Grandmother Elizabeth raised him; Carter mentored him.

Richard Smart updated this spacious home creating a spacious French provincial interior with lofty ceilings, furnished it with European heirlooms and hung crystal chandeliers. His exquisite collections of impressionist paintings and rare yellow glazed Chinese porcelain remain on display.

The music room reflects Richard’s chosen career. Vintage posters reflect his 30-year career as a popular singer for over 30 years on Broadway and in top cabarets worldwide. Autographed photos of the glamorous guests entertained here cover the main wall. Smart lived in the mansion from 1960 until this last family cattle baron died in 1992, ending the Parker reign over the ranch. He is interred behind his beloved home.

In the heart of the ranchlands we stop at the original homestead site. Anthony mentions that Hawaii’s last reigning king, Merrie Monarch David Kalakaua and Samuel, the Royal Rancher had many grand times here together. Though fire destroyed Samuel’s magnificent mansion, Mana Hale cottage and the early schoolhouse remain.

Across the fields five generations of Parkers rest high on a knoll shaded by trees. Among the gravesites, Anthony recounts, “Everyone in Waimea lined the road to this cemetery, mourning the passage of their beloved Thelma.” As we pause in the gentle breezes, we consider their amazing heritage.

As I gaze over these magnificent emerald landscapes, I imagine early paniolos roping steers, branding, driving herds and mending the hundred of miles of fences…

Waimea’s cattle trade thrived. An influx of whaling ships stopping in the islands for supplies produced a huge need for fresh or salted beef, launching a lasting industry; tallow and hides developed into major exports. The Parkers’ fortune and influence increased with the demand for ranch products.

Owned these days by a trust supporting schools, hospitals and charitable organizations in Waimea, Parker Ranch still raises cattle herds on its 150,000 island acres. Steeped in both Western heritage and Hawaiian history, poking around in Hawaii’s cowboy country proves an extraordinary Big Island experience.

Parker Ranch neighborhood

The Parker Ranch neighborhood is found in the low western foothills of Saratoga along the Cupertino border, making it a fantastic commute location for many high tech workers.  With larger homes and lots, it’s easy to stretch out!   The rolling hills make a pleasant vista, or, if you’re in a higher elevation provide beautiful valley views.  The Parker Ranch subdivision boasts highly acclaimed Cupertino schools.  There are many reasons why this is a much beloved area of Saratoga.

There are just shy of 80 houses and luxury homes in Parker Ranch, so it’s not a hugely populous area, but it is fairly large.  Here are a few quick facts on this scenic subdivision:

• Range of home size:  2,797-7,500 SF
• Average SF:  4,517 SF
• Range of lot size:  22,000-146,361 SF
• Average Lot:  70,786 SF
• Years Built:  1900-2013, lots of development in the 1980s

What do homes cost in the Parker Ranch area?

Because there’s an incredible variety in home and lot size, as well as age and condition, it’s not easy to pinpoint the likely price of the neighborhood.  However, as a very broad rule, most homes will currently sell north of $3.5 million.

What are the subdivision’s boundaries?

Map Boundaries:  Streets include Vista Arroyo Ct, Star Ridge Ct, Prospect Rd (pasture only), Picea Ct, Pheasant Ridge Rd, Parker Ranch Rd (major road), Parker Ranch Ct, Farr Ranch Rd (2nd major road), Farr Ranch Ct, Diamond Oaks Ct, Continental Cir, Comer Dr, and Chiquita Ct. To the W and N, the border is Prospect rd. A SW portion borders the Saratoga Country Club. To the S is Mt Eden.

Any special issues with Parker Ranch homes?

As with all homes in or near the coastal foothills, there are special challenges that go with the scenic views and abundant open spaces. Water and drainage will be very important to manage here, controlling the flow of the water away from the home and away from crawl spaces takes more work when there are slopes.

There are high voltage power lines running through part of the community, with some homes built very close to both the lines and the towers.

Part of Parker Ranch may hear train sounds. Some of the area may be in unstable soils zone (landslide areas, common west of Saratoga Sunnyvale Road). Most or perhaps all of it is in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, which is a higher risk area for fire, but also means the insurance premiums will be much more expensive.

About Parker Ranch

Parker Ranch is a planned development located in Saratoga, California. Development began in 1980 along with the association's incorporation. Lots were first sold in 1982, and the association had its first homeowner-composed board in 1987. In 1988, the City of Saratoga accepted an offer of dedication to have Parker Ranch officially join the network of public city streets. Law enforcement is provided by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office .

The neighborhood is a beautiful mixture of semi-rural and suburban living. Numerous wild animals live in the area and can often be seen by residents and visitors alike. It is not uncommon to see deer, coyotes, condors, hawks, and signs of the occasional mountain lion. Despite the close proximity of nature, residents have access to all utilities associated with urban living, short drives to grocery stores, and other conveniences.

The Parker Ranch Homeowners Association is a non-profit corporation formed under the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act. The Association is composed of 76 households, assesses annual dues, and holds an annual member meeting to conduct neighborhood business. The Association is governed by a Board of Directors, whom are elected from among the residents.
